Waiting on the world to change

"What's going on everybody. You know who it. Is you know what time it is. It's time for uncle. Chebbi talks which have paid back at it again with another episode. Listen as you heard from the man. John lead not john legend little long day today. John maher. We're still waiting for the world to change today. We're gonna talk about something that's manhattan. News lately has been spoken about a lot and more and more cases keep happening and in the aspect of you know new change new president new everything. It's important we talk about it because it's it's something that needs to be changed needs to be brought in a couple of months ago. I an episode of black lives matter and it was important. We talked about at that time because it was a very controversial issue a lot of injustices going around our country and it was something that was not being swept under the rug. It was bringing you shown everywhere and this situation right now. Going on in the world is kind of under the rug. I guess if you want to say So for all of you who don't know over the last past three to four weeks. There has been an increase in crime against asian americans and asian american descendants. And it sucks to see this because you would think that as a country in twenty twenty. We wouldn't have to deal with this. You know i get it. Racism is apart stigma of this country. That's been back from when it was founded it's built into the system systemic You know i'm not gonna have the argument of truth as it happens but this is something that unfortunately stands from that could have been avoided really like now. People are attacking asian americans for no reason and today was another thing on the news where this poor girl. She was just simply walking videos on an answering. You can go look at it. She's being harassed by some ecorse. I mean you know. Typical man white male with two bulldogs. Young i her and telling her that her country and nobody cares about her and search spitting at her. Why what and accused case of this going on and on and on there's another case in san diego or an old man in asian man was beat to death be into death for no reason and people are saying why is going on. Why is it happening all of a sudden. You know why it's going to happen little sudden there's only one man to blame Really i i've been advocate of me liking him for a while now and that man is donald john donald j trump thing. He's office but it all stems back from an idea that he impl- implanted in the minds of his naive followers. Because that's really what they are. They're naive because they don't know better. i wanna believe and give them the benefit that they don't have that racism in their heart. I really don't People are taught that or they're shown to learn how to hate no one's ever born with it and it all started with the covid nineteen situation and you know calling it the china virus i get. The virus originated in wuhan china. The virus came from china but to put that stigma in time word countries already divided based on race situations. You know that the is already on edge with all that's going on with black lives matter the police and all these things going on and you wanna put this gasoline on the fire and saying oh well now. We have the china areas. And then you're gonna call the flu and saying racist things about it like at some point. You've got to be like dude. You gotta stop. You can't be doing this and nobody did that. Unfortunately it took an election to them out and for it to stop but it's obviously not stopping things are happening and people are gonna say. Oh well it's not. It's not that serious borough. Just forget it happens. Whatever people are like that no you know why it's interesting that we have to talk about because asian americans have been given to enter the stake for a long time just as bad as not just as bad as african americans. That's different situation. But as bad as the irish as bad as latinos and all this aspect asian. Americans were first scrutinize when they moved here to the united states and they were not able to find a job and they were forced not forced to work but they were given the opportunity to work on the transcontinental railroad which they helped build that entire railroad along with the irish unfortunately though the chinese asian all those who moved here denied get paid very. Well they didn't have any of the sources that you know that a white male will get at that

WHO says coronavirus unlikely to have leaked from China lab

"Keane is retired four star general and the chairman of the Institute for the Study of War and a Fox News. Senior Strategic analyst. General King Great Have you back with us here at the large angry here? That's America, Sir. Big news this week. One of the big headlines. I'm not sure how much we can take from it is the World Health Organization announcing that we should no longer look seriously at the idea that the Corona virus originated in A Level four laboratory in Wuhan, China, that Wuhan Institute of our ology, they said. It's very unlikely it came from there, and in fact, we shouldn't research it anymore. The United States came out and said, Well, not so fast. The jury's still out. That's what the State Department said the White House, Additionally, saying they're looking forward to actually scrutinizing the data to come to a conclusion. What do you make of this? I think we have to have a pretty healthy dose of skepticism when it comes to anything dealing with The World Health Organization. It was not a completely dependent investigation that because the Chinese were getting graded on on the back on that entire team. Uh, you're right. And from what I understand most of what the team was looking, that was Chinese analysis of data, as opposed to the raw data itself. That remains to be seen. I have certainly haven't seen Seen the report. But given the lives that have come out of China for almost a year, given the fact that it is well over a year since the disease broke out of Wuhan City, and the Chinese have had denied anybody from taking a look at this issue. Certainly by now, they've got this story straight in the Davis Strait to support their conclusions. And it's likely took place transcript from from bat stolen animals to humans and that likely place was in the Wuhan market. They want to see her hurt anybody away from the fact that this could happen in the Chinese government laboratory. Uh, where possibly of experiments were taking place with that particular disease or similar diseases themselves for their own purposes, not the least of which is Uses a pie biological weapons. General Kane. Additionally, my concerns don't just aren't just about the Chinese members of this team. There's a member of the team called Dr Peter De Zack. He's a molecular biologist from Rutgers University is one of the lead guys here for this World Health Organization investigation and he's been responsible for directing American and British taxpayer funding. To that lab. Specifically, that's not that's not unknown thing. That is public knowledge. Should he even be a part of a team that's investigating? Ah place that he directed money to certainly absolutely not given that that particular conference Conflict of interest, which is alarming in it of itself, much less you know why he's on the inspection team? Yes, we know full well that the fusion Of what has taken place in the civilian and commercial sector and the military in China is very, very significant. It is priority one at any activity. What's the weather like this? Under the guise of trying to bend after prevent pandemics could possibly lead. To military capabilities is the issue. I really have the whether this guy's on the inspection team or not, but it does point to the bias that's likely inherent. On this inspection team will begin with sure.

From wild idea to COVID vaccine meet the mRNA pioneer who could win a Nobel

"Renew and november. When the first cases started the pop up and wuhan china their description of the virus there description of how easily it was transmitted between families once. We heard that we knew that. This virus had the potential to be a bad actor at that moment in time we said. How are we going to get the sequence for this virus and we started calling our friends and china. We called our friends at the cdc trying to get the sequence of this virus the minute that was published. We started to make our vaccines back on. I think it was january twelfth. We started making the first aren a vaccine that day. It has all happened. Unfathomably fast has an at twelve months later and the pfizer and maduna vaccines have made their way through large clinical trials with good results into syringes and now already into millions of arms. But this quite a back story here. We thought that it would be useful in a pandemic. We thought it would be influenza pandemic but you back in two thousand and five. When we made the initial observation we knew that aren a had a great potential therapeutics. Who with his collaborator catala career. How is a good bit to win a nobel prize for the science driving. Mri vaccines. he's one of my guests on science fiction today. What's been lost in the fast pace race to develop covid nineteen vaccine. This past year is a hidden story of dogged. Pursuit of a nollie scientific idea over decades often in the face of skeptics and nice ideas we went through pharmaceuticals venture capitalists. All other people. it said. Hey we have a great new invention here. And they weren't interested. They said now aren as too hard to work with. We don't think it'll ever work and they just weren't interested now with a pandemic bang with suddenly counting on mri vaccines lock eyes and medina's to help save us. But before this pandemic this brand new technology of marigny vaccines had never been approved for use in humans before. It's incredible isn't it. The heddon even made it to the stage of large scale clinical trials in humans. I don't think anybody could have predicted. Just how effective these vaccines were. And i still get chills. When i remember the moment when that announcement was made a few months ago biologist onto fox is future fellow and associate professor at the university of western australia. It has proved the nice as wrong. I mean given that fifty percent effective is the baa that the world health organization would've liked to say as the minimum to be getting ninety. Five percent is just astounding really hardly any vaccines have that level of efficacy. Cullen pat and professor of pharmaceutical biology at monash pharmaceutical sciences. He's team is working on two different. Mri vaccines for covid. Nineteen in collaboration with the doughy institute in melbourne change from the point of view the future of emo toy syrupy and we haven't had a vaccine working against corona virus. Before i could understand the science. And i could see how theoretically it might work. But i just couldn't see how we could actually make enough to be the billions of doses needed for the world. And that's still looking doc- rod it's entirely contingent on just to pharmaceutical companies meeting. The world's entire supply demands including ours here in australia. Will you receive the pfizer vaccine together just before christmas. We did the vaccine driven by your discovery. Can you describe what that moment was like figuring. My family always yells at me. Because i'm not excited enough. And they're right for man who co owns the intellectual property licenses to medina and i dream osman humble kind of guy. We were incredibly excited. When we saw the results of the phase three trial that are vaccine. Worked and of a safe and had ninety. Five percent efficacy. I'm already moved on to the next thing the next back scene. The next gene therapy you. I'm incredibly excited. That this vaccine is working that it's gonna make a dent in this pandemic many think that there's a nobel prize in chemistry waiting in the wings for you and dr katie. Rico what do you make of that. So people tell the too modest. And i really don't do things for prizes or recognition or anything else.

Virtual 2021 Sundance Film Festival opens on a screen very near you

"City, Utah. And because of the pandemic, thousands of film lovers will go to premieres, panels and parties, mostly online. NPR's Mandali Del Barco has this preview. This year's Sundance opens with the premier of the documentary, Summer of Soul or when the Revolution could not be televised. Director Amir Thompson, known as the Musician. Quest, Love presents footage of the 1969 Harlem cultural Festival that has never been seen since. Pressure's lower. Take My hand was Dr King's favorite zone and Sistema Hey, you're Jackson was my idol. She was my hero. I love this. So much listening to singer Mavis Staples praising my Hayley and Jackson is just one highlight of the film. In a normal year. There'd be long lines of festivalgoers standing in the snow to get into theaters to watch. This year films will be screened virtually through especially built online platform, says the festival's new director, Tabatha Jackson. The global pandemic hit And we realized that we had to re imagine everything. Jackson says her team wanted to create a wafer, filmgoers and filmmakers to gather will be able to chat with each other in virtual waiting rooms. Then watch film premieres together before asking questions of the casts and crews, and that's to preserve the energy and the excitement on the buzz and the conversation. In that moment, as we are confined in our Safe spaces. This is an opportunity to go out into the world and be taken around the world by some of these films as an international festival dedicated to independent filmmaking, the Sundance Community prides itself on being a bit scrappy. We're excited. I think this feels like a grand experiment, so people who are they couldn't afford it or couldn't make the journey. Couldn't navigate the icy streets of Park City can now come to Sundance. We're bringing Sundance to them. This year, Half the films at Sundance were directed by people of color as well as by women. Many were shot or finished during the pandemic lockdown. There's even one titled In the same breath about how covert 19 began in Wuhan, China. Many of the doctors said these hospitals must have known this new virus was spreading between people, but they were afraid to say so for fear of punishment from the government. Among the feature films to watch for is Koda, about a hearing girl whose family is deaf, also sons of monarchs, about a Mexican biologist and flee and animated film about an Afghan refugee. Other highlights included documentary about choreographer Alvin Ailey and another about the life and career of actress Rita Moreno. Life can be pressing America what was different about Anita and with side stories that she was a girl who respected herself. Who had a certain amount of dignity. Actually, she became my role model. The festival will also include online panels, meetups concerts and parties, many of them free. There will be virtual spaces for black and Latin. Next creators, and Jackson says festival goers can participate in the new frontier program using Webcams or virtual reality headsets from home, you Congar! Oh, in as an avatar, you can wonder around this incredible space garden. Go to parties, which are where people are going to gather to talk about films. We felt a cinema house in this virtual environment, and there's an extraordinary gallery off new work. The reason I'm so excited about it is because it really is an unusual space in which we can still come together and socialize, and it doesn't feel anything like Zoom. Sundance is also partner with art House cinemas around the country to present some in person events, including at drive in theaters. Manda Little Barco. NPR news.

WHO investigators begin looking into coronavirus origin in Wuhan, China

"By the World Health Organization into the origins of the Corona virus pandemic is now getting underway in the Chinese city of Wu Han, where the disease first came to light. Earlier today, China warned that the members of the W H o team should be allowed to work free from political interference following calls from the United States for the probe to be robust and clear. A team of experts has just completed its two week period of quarantine in Wuhan. The BBC Stephen McDonnell is in the city and he told me more Basically, we've been following this international team of scientists around today We saw his they lifted quarantine until to go toe are normal Hotel, the big, rambling complex of a place where they'll be able to have face to face meetings with their Chinese counterparts. I mean having discussions via video link, but now they can sit down and talk to one another about the possible causes of the Corona virus. I think one thing that's pretty crucial is there's been a bit of misunderstanding. I think as to what this team is going to do. They're not really going to be doing their own research. They're going to be examining what the Chinese scientists already have. And then looking at what's missing. I mean, how do we get to the bottom of what caused this virus does new research after the commission or something along those lines? I'll be then putting together a report and moving on from there. What they won't be doing is in two weeks telling us we've found out the cause of the Corona virus have stressed to us out complicated. This is It's a very difficult thing to work out. It's going to take time, maybe even years and frankly, asked us all just to wait and see what they come up with other scientists visiting the laboratories that some people say the virus might originally have escaped from in short, no They see the lab leak theory as a conspiracy theory, really? And unless they've got some solid reason, they say, scientific reason. They're one of me going down that path. What they're looking at is the zoonotic origin of the virus. In other words, the question of which animal it possibly came from, maybe a bat say into another animal, and then finally into human beings and how that could have taken place when they're even saying it could have come from about overseas or even a person, another country and that the virus entered Wuhan buy somewhere else. That's a very contentious thing for them to have said because the Chinese government has been really pushing this line that we owe. It probably came from overseas. I mean, one Foreign Ministry official even said it definitely came from overseas. So they'll be locking that the W H O is considering this, But either way, the scientists would there be from other countries or China have somehow going to get above the politics in this And really mine into the research into the doctor to see what they can find. That was the BBC Steven McDonald reporting from the Chinese city of Wu Han, and he'll be following the progress of that Wh o team there.

"The anniversary it's been one year with covert 19. It was the anniversary this week to the start of a 76 Day lockdown in Wuhan, China, where the Corona virus was first detected. And here it is that one year two new films about Wuhan Have been released. The first we're told the state back film praising Wuhan sacrifices being screened throughout China, targeting audiences that firmly back to ruling Communist Party's response to the outbreak. It's called days and nights in Wuhan, featuring contributions from 30 filmmakers. Train to suffering of the city's 11 million residents. Now the second film we found it's a somber documentary about it's him pandemic from artists and political activists. Ah, oui, oui. Now he's having a little bit more of a challenge. His film called Crow Nation, has been rejected by festivals, theaters and streaming services. Even Amazon and Netflix said no way he attributes the censorship to fears over offending the ruling party, which controls what movies can be shown in China. It's not clear if there are plans. To show these films overseas.

"Shows that it probably should provide at least some immunity in the medium term we're still not sure how this novel coronavirus will act in covert nineteenth impact will be it could be like a cold that you developed some immunity to in future years you when it either changes or without immunity wears off you could be susceptible again but if we could have that it would allow us to as we've seen in other cities for instance in Wuhan China they have a green yellow and red system red means that you still are susceptible or that you are potentially have coverage nineteen green is that you have this immunity and yellow is that you're in a quarantine state this would be something that would allow more people to go to work allow more people to go to school but my worry is that our success here in flattening the curve while the best news is that save lives it also means most of us have not been exposed to the coronavirus and covered nineteen so we're gonna also need more than just immunity passports to get some of us back to work back to school and back in the spaces and places because we can't wait for the entire year we can't wait for two years we're going to have to figure out tracking and tracing we're going to have to have more testing like this for whose infectious because for the muny passports at the different test is a blood test but these swab tests help us know if your infectious right now and we're gonna need to be able to surveil really quickly the entire community so knowing there's a hot spot one neighborhood and potentially closing out off keeping some people who are especially vulnerable like our seniors and people with pre existing health conditions maybe home longer but it is definitely one of that arrows in our quiver one that I hope that we can use and I hope in the next few days to share more news about are more formal process of how we're going to have those conversations about re opening the city with the county and neighboring cities as well southern California in the weeks and months ahead thank you next question earlier mayor was talking testing thirty sides now cross the country eleven thousand people per day is the capacity hospital beds hundreds of ICU beds in the range of a thousand ventilators given where things are do you believe that Los Angeles has avoid having local hospitals over burdened by covert nineteen patients and if so what's the reaction and how does this impact the use of the mercy and the convention center absolutely thank you a job for the question it's received the case is still going up.

"This relief map can be found in the Three Gorges Dam visitor center. Wuhan China is split between the Han and Yang Zi River in central China. Four hundred twenty nine miles nautical from Shanghai and five hundred twenty one miles by road. Most people today take the bullet train in four hours and it cost roughly forty dollars. This map was the map that we saw when I visited in nineteen ninety eight of Emperor Marquee State of Zing in this video. You'll see our guide who is talking about the tomb of the emperor and the bells was discovered the same way that the tomb where the terra cotta warriors were found. He's tomb was discovered by a farmer was working in his fields. Emperor Marquee rained and was buried in four thirty three B C at the end of the Bronze Age. He wanted to be buried with or chamber tomb with his prized possessions and servants. Today the bells can be seen at the Hubei Provincial Museum and Wuhan in the next video. You'll see that it takes up to five people to play to large range of bronze bells.

"Talk with ABC's Alex stone about this plane carrying American citizens from Wuhan China so the plane went to anchorage barely everybody checked out their number they rented you medical screenings on the make sure they didn't have that the virus so apparently that plane is in California we'll talk about where it goes what happens to all the people because they're going through quite a rigorous process in fact that's our top story so let's get right to it a flood of U. S. citizens from the center of the coronavirus outbreak in Wuhan China to the Ontario airport has been diverted to riverside county about two hundred forty U. S. employees their families and some private U. S. citizens were supposed to go to Ontario after a stop for gas in Alaska and several screening for symptoms but now San Bernadino county supervisor Curt Hagman says the final destination has changed as we see this let us know that the fight will be diverted to March airforce base admin says the state department cited logistics as the reason but sources with knowledge of the operation tell KFI news the decision to divert was due to adverse publicity about landing at a commercial airport Corbin Carson KFI news honestly we had this conversation the guy was the miss cleo of what was going to happen the only reason that I started thinking about it was because when my brother in law came back from one of his deployments with the marines he went to March instead of going to the Ontario airport and I started thinking a little bit more I forget why they were gonna have them go to the Ontario airport but it got me thinking about other airports and why wouldn't they put them in a more secure facility where they could be monitored a little more closely and that you know there wasn't public access like there would be at the airport and I said well you know we were so my has and I were talking last night about that's weird that they wouldn't take him to March or somewhere close like that where they get really keep a lid on it that sort of thing maybe maybe that happened now and and that's exactly what we were talking about last night even if they kept those people totally safe and totally out of the public view people are still gonna be free get out if they're going through the Ontario airport not China's number of coronavirus cases to surpass the number of patients in the sars outbreak it started in two thousand two both outbreaks were caused by the same type of virus that causes respiratory symptoms the number of people killed by the new strain is still significantly lower than during the sars outbreak which lasted several months the villages on the outskirts of Beijing are taking their own quarantine measures there Kate such as dirt piles have been showing up at village entrances along with mask wearing villagers who interrogate anyone trying to enter a committee member in one village says just one infected person could ruin the whole village American researchers have been working to isolate virus samples for research from the confirmed cases in the US Dr Anthony Fauci with the national institutes of health those researchers got a start on a jump start thanks to a genetic sequence posted online by China given the technology of the twenty first century we were able to use that sequence pull out the gene for the glycoprotein spike of the particular coronavirus and make that the immunity gin to be used in a vaccine is as any vaccine would be finished months from now it might not be ready before the outbreak dies federal investigators have finished sifting through the wreckage of the helicopter crash that killed Kobe Bryant and eight other people after the helicopter took a sharp left turn it was descending at about two thousand feet per minute the time from the descent to impact was probably about a minute the NTSB is Jennifer how many says the pilot had more than twelve hundred hours of flight time on the Sikorsky S. seventy six B. helicopter he's also been with the company for ten years somebody says there are still missing details partially because there was no cockpit voice recorder or flight data recorder that would have helped us significantly in this investigation and other investigations and it's something we've recommended several times over a number of years in Calabasas Chris and call okay if I knew and the LA county coroner's office says it has identified Brian's body and those of four others found at the crash.
