Opening Day At Chicago Wrigley Field With Fans Returning; Here’s What You Need To know

"A major step out of the pandemic. Today. For the first time in a year, thousands of people will attend a live event in the city. It's opening day at Wrigley Field. WGN's Glenn Marshall is outside of the friendly confines this morning, September 2019. That was the last time fans were actually in this field, enjoying a live baseball game. Now, of course, with fans coming in is gonna be a lot of changes and a different experience for those fans due to the pandemic before you leave home. You definitely want to take your temperature. That's what the Cubs want you to do. Tickets will have in a sign date on them, along with the time and designated zone for you Now, those zones are also in place for getting food and using the bathroom. If you're hungry or thirsty, ordering will be done using a touch less system and that's to the MLB ballpark app on your phone with the option to have food delivered to your seat. And even going through security will be a done differently this year. No need to worry about emptying your pockets. One says she'll be able to order food electronically. There'll be touchless security, people ages two and older will be required to wear masks and the major will have more on opening day. Coming up in WGN sports Mayor

"So i. Could you walk us through. Things unfolded between jared porter amiss reporter while jared porter was at the cubs one. Did they first meet each other. So this reporter. I met jared porter. June twenty six two thousand and sixteen order at this point in time is the cubs director of professional scouting. He's an elevator at yankee stadium. They'd talk briefly exchange cards. That's about it. This is an interaction that that seems fairly normal. Later that afternoon porter begins texting her and according to espn before the day is over he'd ask her to get a drink. Three times he began sending her techs and they corresponded sporadically for about three weeks. Him complimenting her her responding despite a limited grasp of english july nineteenth on july order shifts boyfriend sensor another selfie she replied with one of her own then porter said you're gorgeous. Want war of me question mark and she texted a laugh and said yes order also laughed then send other selfie followed by a photo of himself on a bed with the bulge in the crotch area of pants after sending another selfie. He asked like she again. Texted a laugh and said yes adding. You're not married. He responded nope. Which picture do you like. The most wants to see more. This becomes obviously something where you're starting to realize this might not be a source and she kind of cuts off communication with him from the timeframe of july nineteenth to august tenth. He sends sixty two unanswered text messages including photos that get more explicit in nature and on august ninth he and the reporter went chicago. It wrigley field. I think i just saw your so beautiful. The reporter told espn she felt panicky and she hid to void him a day. Later porter's message. I'll be in la this weekend at the best hotel in america. Can you meet me there. That's evening porter texted. You're missing out next. He sent more than a dozen photos of hotel grounds food and a bathtub. Then a shot of pants with the bulge on a bed finally texted a shot of a fully naked and erect penis. And it really at this point in time becomes a point where it is crossing the line. She told espn. She got help composing her first reply to porter in weeks. This is extremely inappropriate very offensive and getting out of line. Could you please stop sending offensive photos or message. Puerto responded oh. I'm sorry i will stop. I really apologize. Please let me know if you ever need anything workwise and we need to reiterate that this reporter is not from the united states. She doesn't have a grasp of the english language and she needed to rely on an interpreter and players from her home country to really understand what was going on here. Yes she did. And she was in a position where jared porter all the power. He could have helped that journalists he could have given her all the scoops all the news. He could have made her into a big name. A big deal. She can't help him in any way at all minus obviously physically sexually. He's attracted to her. She told the espn that until then she thought it would be awkward to say no to porter's questions and that if she had a better understanding of the language and culture she would have realized sooner what was going on.

"Uh, national significance of the historic being on landmark. Comes at a time when Nothing else is going on. Really with Guess you want to call it the administration and here we have the department. Of the interior. Suddenly announced that Wrigley Field is designated as a national historic landmark and I'm pretty sure everybody's aware that there's a relationship between the ownership of the Cubs and the White House. So maybe there's nothing in that. But I mean, I think it deserves. And of course, it just seems. I have, like a dropped out of nowhere. You know, It's just a random announcement like a week before Thanksgiving. Here we go. Guess what? Well, it's not going to get any votes or support for some future. Political endeavor, but it was overdue it it was bound to happen. I'm surprised it took seven years. But then things tend to move slowly. You know, baseball is a is a sport. Things move slowly. There's a lot of injustice, and some things get deferred for many, many years or decades before the recognized well, there's a lot of things to go over here. One of the things that's for me anyway, not knowing the history like you do. Is to read what the press release from the department of the Interior sounds so weird to put it that way. Um, has to say about the significance of Wrigley Field and we'll get to that and more, and we've got some great audio. I understand. Cost Of Living (MM #3480)

"The Maisonette with Kevin Nation a lot of people gripe about the cost of living these days and it came to mind for me recently when I got a note for my mother. She said a friend of hers had mentioned that she lives in Chicago just about 10 minutes north of Wrigley Field and that the house they grew up in the apartment that grew up in had become a condo and was now just sold for like a half a million dollars or something like that. So my mom wanted to know if somebody were to rent their apartment them. They moved into 60 years ago today when they got married, what would it cost them when my parents were married sixty years ago. They paid $86 a month for rent today that same apartment which is still there still for rent and it's $1,075. Now, I'm sure you're saying of course Kevin but they made improvements. Well, we looked online. It doesn't look like they have still look like they have the same radiators the same bathrooms the same tile the same nearly everything they had sixty years ago kind of funny how you put it all in perspective sixty years later my parents still going strong and so is there original honeymoon apartment for $1,000 more a month still there in Chicago still amazing to me dead.

Chicago Celebrating The Sox And Cubs During The Playoffs, And During The Pandemic

"Season no fans no fans at ballparks. at ballparks. Major Major League League Baseball Baseball playoffs playoffs are underway, are underway, and this and year this year there is there something is something else unusual. else unusual. Both Both Chicago Chicago teams teams are playing are playing in the postseason. in the postseason. It's just It's the just third the third time time the Cubs the Cubs and and the White the Sox White Sox reached reached the playoffs the playoffs in the same in the same year, year, NPR's NPR's David David Shaper Shaper reports. reports. If you were hanging around outside of Wrigley Field the day before a playoff game in a normal year, the neighborhood would be buzzing trucks delivering food and beer to the ballpark. Street vendors hawking souvenirs. And hundreds of fans creating an electric atmosphere. But in 2020 not so much, it's obviously wait quieter. It's It's definitely weird with her mask on 54 year old Chicago and Colleen getting sitting with friends at a table space far apart from the others. In the beer garden at Bernie's across the street from Wrigley, Watching the Cubs play the crosstown rival white socks over the final weekend of the season. It's definitely different is definitely weird. But the diehards are out and we love the sport. It's only a few diehard fans that air in this place, which would normally be packed shoulder to shoulder 42 year old Cubs fan Paul Schmitz doesn't mind. This the first time we've seen the game together this year, Schmitz is watching with his friend Steve Nick, who's a Sox fan? Yeah, I mean, it's it does not being able to go to games. But it's nice being able to just go on an outdoor area like this, and it's been really refreshing. After you know, for five months and nothing White Sox fans and Cubs fans rarely see eye to eye on many here in Chicago are thrilled that both teams are in the playoffs. That's only happened twice before, in 2008 and Way way back in 1906. But the White Sox beat the Cubs in the World Series in a normal season. Lifelong Sox fans, even Daven would take his family to a few games that he'd often watch others with friends at a bar and while that is now possible on a limited basis, Yeah, Verne is taking in the strangely wonderful season from his couch with a cold beer in his hand. I can't think better distraction, especially in a town like Chicago That certainly is bruised from 2020 for a bunch of different reasons. Rivals for more than a century, Davern says. Having both the Cubs and the White Sox in the playoffs gives the entire city something to cheer about a family party. Should involve some kind of a Disagreement about the Cubs in the socks and it's it's It's the greatest Chicago discussion and I think it's accidentally uniting in some ways, and in the year like 2020 or everything. Is this so Divisive, Of course, the dream matchup Here's for the Cubs and the socks to play each other in the World Series. As unlikely as that may be. The cruel joke of 2020 is That no matter who wins in the playoffs, the World Series will be in a neutral ballpark in Texas, and fans won't be there. David Shaper. NPR NEWS

one if you haven't heard it yet and i yeah let's just get right to it part to what the wrigley wakefield usher what's the what's kind of the dumbest thing you've seen someone sneaking 'em those like there's a couple of weeks ago where there's a group of five high school kids they're probably fifteen in any i love these kids and they only had four tickets and they all like just tried to like run right through like you can't do that like my supervisor right here yeah this is you know this isn't cool whatsoever anything clever though like i've seen before that video or those pictures those guys who dressed up his home city ice guys lollapalooza like genius idea you ever seen anything like that i suppose you maybe what it now but i i've never seen anything like that but now people try everything will try everything so playoff games i mean you just i've worked one yet all really okay this year maybe oh where you go on that school after scoring do you think there's any guy like could you be good enough that you're job where they're like hey give my ball sack colic we need i'm here for the playoffs like do they have a playoff roster for security no they just a at that point in the year there will supply also a lot of people are gonna wanna be working anyway you know just be in the atmosphere w wants to us the best then he they want as many as they can get okay fair big games like that you know any good counterfeit tickets not so much anymore 'cause we stopped taking a printed out paper tickets so like see bite off of stop hubbard the cubs website you can't print it out at home and bring that anymore it's all gotta be on her phone what do you think about that very happy they got rid of paper tickets on i'm indifferent doesn't make your job easier a little bit but i mean it also it's kind of tough through like some of the older people that common don't know how to use a phone or a some people come without a dead phone and ask me like what do i do about it and like i said it's the same thing is losing a ticket constantly checking and people brightness up pretty much yeah you gotta watch that'll cause that exchange when you're like i got a puppet brightness yeah he dropped that phone you're fucked look i know i know i always ask them hey do you mind turning it up all the way you wanna touch it handed off the ball sack very a very calculated guys yeah but we also have 'em newer scanners that are better picking up a phone on any kind of brightness oh yeah what kind of technologies coming so there's the hand held scanners that have been there for while a and then there's also on like machines that we move out there and people just scan it themselves on a monitor all you ever think it'll be like an eyeball thing in our eyes yeah like you just step up they scan your eyes there's something who's this black mir curious you know maybe one day i think all heart security is very important it so you checking bags and everything to know that security okay sorry you said that they were wandering they're doing well that's the third part yeah right okay so at there's the ushers obviously you say you don't work the seats is botch is the department section nobody wants that like you got constantly tell people get the under pictures you know wrap it up 'em that one's now i know people are doing that anymore i don't know it's not as big i mean they won the world series a few years ago so it's they did they did yeah but i mean it's not like it's not like a huge thing anymore yeah i hear you that's good enough i would've figured people were still snapping those pictures those ricketts save his own team of like ushers in security and stuff hanging around the boxes no no i don't think so okay but he's around the park all the time he's a great guy but he entered through outfield i'm not sure where he goes i'll be on his property through a helicopter he just comes right on the mound lands right there a drunk people yeah strongest person you've seen yeah i wanna get too personal but who makes more like a cubs guiding her position and white sox who pays better all nothing cubs say a little bit better more foot traffic you'd hope so yeah exactly there's more than ten thousand people in you ever think like you could go in like go to the white sox and be like hey you know i gotta year to experience with the cubs like you should hire like nah i i wouldn't even wanna know i wouldn't wanna go on their parking yeah well i got a guy oh yeah i got i got parking stickers for like a three flat third like a one of the one of the lots or no i i know somebody that lives in areas we get parking stickers all she to get like three you heard our street at a permanent parking at top pick up and drop this guy like this person like you can't like they couldn't even make it out of the gate like someone who's like followed the finish line who well there's a braves fan a few a a few days ago when they were in town in this guy he was from georgia here's telling me that it's like the one thing i could make out the here saying he lost his girlfriend andy he wasn't sure what section he was in 'em in wisconsin just wandering around talking the other braves fans and then one one of the fans came up to me is like hey like disguise lost his know where he's going are well i start talking to him had no idea what you're saying he couldn't find his ticket her anything 'em luckily i got to like get a tour as a general direction 'em but this guy was yeah he he wasn't making out any words but used walking walking pretty good really yeah hammer so lot of the do you have you been bad like the holding cell like where they take the people who are under age no popping a lot of people on that i heard yeah i've never been over by there but you see a you see people getting detained all the time over there especially in the bleachers everyone's just out there getting drunk and especially once it starts to heat up you know hot summer day afternoon game does this make you like the cubs more was 'em it's the same it's the same a three like die hard like how how would you describe yourself as a fan a yeah i guess i'm a diehard fan i mean you can't desk that i don't like the term diehards like i'm not gonna living die by them but i'm very invested in what they do like i could name either roster and everything that's all that shit there are a lot of these people that work there like some of their coworkers i like the big time nerd fans like that yeah yeah some of whom are on and that's like this is my dream job like i'm working rosenfield on yeah well russia eighty eighty one games yeah for me it's more like a just a good jobs come back to in the summer and it's cool environment to be in other than that though like it's still just a job and therefore the paycheck really so where do you get you're khakis they a question very good question they actually provide us the israeli on do you have to go somewhere we have to go to the park during the year during the off season it may have the vendor there sizing you or do they know we sending her size that have done yeah wow how did they usually run along you gotta hallam yeah i did read okay okay what about the shoes sarin other aflac yeah shoes they're supposed to be all black their own shoes but it's up to you it's a c i will eat better flexibility they couldn't tell me i know where it is a huge per capita that's nice fights fights yeah there is a a couple of guys the other day same day i saw the braves guy and there's two cubs fans going at it a pear tree that there's a there's a big guy probably like six six and he had his buddy up against the wall of choking up against the wall is bad thirty four games and thirty five days will do that to a fan base it well it's a hard time certainly it's always kind of a rush when you see a section any disappears going everywhere like just like it looked like a waterfall you're a water park for a second there yeah it's always it's always a crazy experience is a foul balls i mean obviously i know he said he worked the ticket gave up a little more but people go nuts balls yeah i'll do anything fair ball yeah do you think like you've ever seen any got smoked like it overall injuries pretty lower on on the lower on ron higher on on on foul balls you're saying yeah 'em not so much by the ball but just everyone going after after it and it's not even anything like intentional it's just a group of people swearing fair ball that's on the ground yeah wow but what about sunscreen i i feel like i always want sunscreen it regularly do people come up to you and ask you first sunscreen a once in a while once in a while but you can't bring in the space on screen really yeah why is that an aerosol by the security scariest eerie breach yeah i guess you can injure someone if that exploded to bring food in is that true or false yes that's crazy you know they're all my hunch you knows where you said you said is that true or false and he said yes i think the cubs don't want you to know that you could bring food and this is a free play in true or false can i bring someone root beer someone told me that they used to bring hero subs in every game 'cause i bought like r i t i p heroes at actly third grade someplace somewhat only bring areas ask what you can't bring that's like a movie theater you can't bring that into the game and they said yeah you certainly can't i couldn't believe it yeah i think it's all the day games that's that's that's the reason why yeah yeah surely older people older folks do like the ones who have tickets for years come on out to the ballpark yeah yeah oh let's take a break right here for a second i just brought up here oh subzero solves all right p unfortunately it is in the chicago sub graveyard but how about a sub that is not how about jp garage as we just talked about him yesterday they just got named in the top fifty list by chicago magazine they also got naming a top forty three lives by timeout chicago so head on over to jp graziano dot com get rid of that third party stuff.

"Game at Wrigley field playing for the other fans. But last night, certainly there were a lot of White Sox fans here supporting him on the team. He ends up being on, after the cubs traded Aloi Jimenez to the White Sox, almost two years ago, and he, he made a statement last night. No question about it. And the one thing that I think we're learning about Aloi Jimenez beyond the fact that he just loves the smile and loves to have fun, boy, this guy, embraces, the big stage tonight starting pitcher, Lucas, g Alito spoke about that aspect of the White Sox news. Slugger keesa type of guy where the stage doesn't make a difference to him. He I think that for him, the more fans, the, the bigger, the stage, more fun. It is. I know you guys see him out there. Like always having a good time joking around. That's just the way he is. So I think that's a really good mentality to have and it's going to serve him. Well over the next twenty years of his career twenty years, I. Everybody would take that. But certainly, when you think about where this franchise is headed in the bigger stages, that they're going to be on a slugger like that who's gonna be in the middle of the order for a really, really long time, embracing that big stage. These big moments that is so important, and it's still for twenty two year old to come up big like that. It's pretty incredible. Meanwhile Lucas GIO Alito himself having an outstanding season. Still a youngster for the White Sox as well ten in one two point two two ERA. Both of those numbers, the winds and the ERA currently.

"My we talk about the team and things so i really have a lot to i miss them in it's a shame that we lost him so young coach in nineteen ninety four when the players went on strike he was hitting three ninety four near last road trip through wrigley field playing a cubs playing the astra's he was on a absolute tear i think it was something like thirteen for twenty five during that road trip and i always be convinced having covered the team that time that he would hit four hundred that year what do you remember about that season where we were convinced if you were there like you were and we're watching them every day that's why we were convinced it was unbelievable how consistent he was getting them getting to bear on the ball so yeah we we thought he he would do it he would just wanna go zones that great athletes get in and i was actually coaching third base at the time so i look different angle and you know tony never stop amazing but that year he was just relentless with consistent he was on the basis and just makes good contact every time up there he didn't strike out so we we thought he had a legit shot we thought that we we really thought he do it and have you seen your book voting ball you write about your time with the giants on curious about this how often do you wear those championship brings at you have you got three of them with the giants how often you you put those on.

"Good question probably not probably not lefties at wrigley field i mean if you really want me to die dig deep on this it might depend on the weather lefties wrigley field it's not easy to hit forty home runs the wind patterns and things like that are making real difficult and i'll be sending out a lot to left center that's where he's if he can hit ten to fifteen out to left center did you actually did you guys actually think hit that ball last night boy hit it hard all right only seven 'cause he pulled it so much and people were tweeting at me there's there's there's numbers all over this ballpark three thirty five down the line even have a distance at the top of the upper deck four forty eight so i think it's you know it's kind of in between three thirty five four forty eight to four seven eight cents but he feel like he crushed that ball no down the ball is not traveled well here with the roof open i i don't think i've covered a game with the rupel roof open at night and the conditions are not right for home hitters players have said that as well so that thing get looked like it was hit further and remember he crushed another one after that as well inclined for a double so when he's been on he's had great backs bat speed and really been able to pull balls which is a great sign for him he needs we need to see that out of them and also go to left center as well just we appreciate it enjoy the final game on your trip to cincinnati you got a lot a lot more fun in miami gorgeous this week i got only imagine.
