Yankees Lose Multiple Heartbreakers to Red Sox as Nightmare Scenarios Unravel

"Thomas karen not welcome to the podcast. The stole a game from the red sox on saturday ended up being their only win the series despite holding leads. Three one with two outs in the ninth and four. Nothing entering the eighth with a no hitter on sunday. Which loss were you more devastated by. I have to go thursday. And i don't really even think it's close thursday pissed me off that was that's you're coming into that series with how much momentum you're five and one in your last six games against a skeleton crew You power into thursday. You have that lead late and you call you. Yeah you punch back and then you cough it up again. Their losses that you simply can't have as a team with world series aspirations. The you look around the league and then and then once again the yankees have another worst loss of the season on sunday depending on depending like you said depending on how you look at it. I think thursday was worse because they could have set the tone they would have been playing with house money with garrett cole on the mound on friday And like you said kind of tailor made for them in that one garrett call on the mountain water rodriguez leaves early with an emergency injury. Replacement and nothing.

"Baseball. I'm a more fair. Don heavy one. And the reason. I go pairs. Obviously i watch mac in detroit for about five years and he is one of the best pitchers i've ever seen and i'm having a hard time. Not saying that he may be a better than pearland as far as theresa concern but i. It's a tough when there for me but anyway he's one of the best and you got bueller kershaw's going to be back caterina's you are you re. Sc got thirteen win. I mean he's still pitching. It seems like they've got a bunch of talent everywhere. I liked the pitching staff. I really do. I can't think of anybody else who staff that better than their staff. So i'm gonna go with the dodgers. They need to get that offense going. They're going to get back to the post season again though. Yeah i'm ago fair fair. Look the dodgers tied for the league. Lead in whip their best in the league in. Era three point one eight. They're tied for the legally opponents batting average two thirteen. And they just added max scherzer nuff said it's fair. I mean you know. I'm gonna to say about. That is a foul. And it's not that christie numbers you all set or all true but they've been scotland. There's been a lot of injuries trying to add pieces and they're trying to make wholesale changes and i don't know if it's going to take i don't know if this is the same staff was able to win the world series a year ago. I think it's down. We gotta wait to see about max cole hamels. You know you're gonna get beat around like a raggedy andy wherever agony. What i mean. We don't know yet. So i'm gonna say they're at the top but i'm not gonna say they're the best we keep it movin question number two sticking in los angeles angels star mike. Trout has missed sixty seven games answering wednesday and this week they announced his return date was being pushed back again as he recovered from a calf strain. Now the halos are currently twelve back in their division and six and a half back in the wild card so rod the question foul or fair to say that the angels should preemptively shut might trout down for the season.

Biggest Takeaways From 2021 SEC Football Media Day

"Things first. You obviously weren't sec. Media days we had a lot of coverage there some interesting comments whether the vanderbilt head coach or other other ones that may people chuck before we get an each team. What was kind of like your biggest takeaway Heading into the season while biggest takeaway happened day. One when greg sankey took the mike at the podium to to use that time which is incredibly valuable real estate where he typically gives a state of the conference address extols. The virtues of the conference talks about the greatness of the league and make no mistake. He did that but he also uses that as a moment to deliver messages and he delivered a message. Surprise me a little bit. Now keep in mind. I was at the college world series win. Nc state had cancel their game because of kobe protocol and get out of the tournament and that was a red flag to me. Because to be perfectly honest. I kind of feel like by that time. This was mid june. Most of us had from sports perspective had kind of moved on. We'd see teams have success in leagues have success putting events and so it was back of mind until poof this. This team gets kicked out and they would have a really good chance as an underdog going in winning the whole thing. So to that point. Greg sankey stands at the podium and he says listen. We've got a long way to go to meet the vaccination pressure within this league and the conference itself is putting out a mos- in commercials in encouraging people in saying that the sec backs the vaccine and keep in mind the footprint that the sec sits in that could be considered controversial by some of their trance so for him to come out and say that that was a giant red flag in my mind. Because i thought myself two things number one if there is still a threat of games being lost in the sec. He that's must be a reason why he's addressing this right and number two if the sec. With all of its resources in alabama messaging in all of its medical support is still in this situation. What does that say about other leagues. You know what does it say about the big twelve or the acc or the american or or going down to the sunbelt. And if it's a problem for the sec. I bet that it's probably a problem throughout college. Football and the concern is the vaccination rates have to get above a certain threshold so we can feel confident that the season can go on interrupted and when i say season i mean everybody. All one hundred twenty plus a lower division teams that will play division one teams. And i wasn't prepared for the severity of his comments in him. Using that valuable real estate time to focus on it.

"Dodger debut. I know we'll be focused on winning a ballgame and just take good at passing, you know, because I know that Max is gonna is gonna go out there and and compete and bring energy and I know our guys are going to be They are ready to support it. So put that together and you know, 20 ballgame and right now Astros best record of the American League stand five games in front of the A's in the Western Division. Dodgers start tonight. 3.5 games behind the Giants and the National League West for more on tonight's matchup from Dodger Stadium. We welcome in and say hello to our crew will be on tonight's call with Chris Singleton. Here's Roxy Bernstein. Alright Steve Game two of his two game interleague series in a rematch of the 2017 World Series at Dodger Stadium. They had over 52,000. Last night to see the Astros and the Dodgers and singing We're back at it again, And just when we thought kind of emotions were maybe it's gotten old will. Certainly the Dodger crowd last night fed off the emotions in the hostility that's left over. Well, you know his players we talk about. Hey, circle that date on the calendar. Maybe when the season turned or something good happened. We got a trade and that player impacted our team. Well for the fans. This date's been circled for a long time. Last year, they couldn't enter Dodger Stadium, but they were outside to greet the Astros is the bus came in this year. You knew they were coming in full force, Roxy even though they won the World Series last year, you would think all right, you know, colder tempers would prevail after winning the World Series last year. We're good. We got our championship, but no, they brought it and A lot of energy in the ballpark. My only concern. Bring the intensity. Bring the passion but don't bring any violence. Well, and now we have these two teams going at it. Last night. The Astros winning the game the first game of this two game series. They come into tonight, leading Oakland by five as the A's had a dramatic win earlier today, while the Dodgers are 3.5 behind San Francisco and the Anil West. Yes, the Dodgers. You know, they're They're eight and eight since the All Star break, So this is a team that's scuffle. Little bit. Clayton Kershaw has been on the injured list. Corey Seager just came off Mookie Betts as well. Cody Bellinger has had a really rough year. I mean, he's got the lowest batting average of any player with a minimum of 200 plate appearances. So you know there's been some struggle there. But with all of that said, they've still been scoring runs. That hasn't been an issue. They've scored the most runs, you know, average per game in the National League, but just from the standpoint of getting that cohesiveness and really getting clicking, but I think most importantly, you have to give the San Francisco Giants credit. They have played well, Roxie. And although a lot of us for the first couple of months didn't think they're for real, I think that nationally West believes that they are for real at this point. Well tonight for the Dodgers. Their new toy that Dave Roberts has to play with the multiple Cy Young Award winner Max shares who makes his l A debut. Yeah, this is gonna be great. I mean, this is a guy that is probably going to be going to the Hall of Fame. At some point. He bring such intensity now at you know, 36 37 years old. Competitor. He's pitched really well in his career at Dodger Stadium, three and one with a 1 38 e R. A. That's been as a visiting player. We'll see how he does it in the Dodger blue Tonight. So it's Max Scherzer and his Dodgers debut against Jake Odorizzi in the first place. Astros talking a bit Steve with the Dodgers of the Astros. Alright, singing Rock C Thank you very much. But the Cubs have not won a season series against the Rockies since 2015 granted they did not play against each other in 2020. "Hey poker peeves. I'm so happy to welcome. Burn ardley to the show today. We don't do interviews often and when we when we do. We make sure that they're very good. Guest bernard is the host of the long running bernard lee poker show fourteen years now. Incredible record right there. Longtime coach and author of a brand new book poker satellite success. So welcome to the show. Bernard i appreciate it have me. Yeah definitely thank you for taking the time. I appreciate it. So you're up in massachusetts right. That's right that's right. Yeah what's the weather like up there right now because it's pretty darn hot over here in california it's You know it's been a very weird summer. We've had some really really hot days like in. The nineties and muggy today is kind of an eighties muggy day but a weekend before it was in the fifties. I mean it was. It's been a really crazy a summer so far but that's kind of par for the course with this crazy year that we've had to for sure. Yes super crazy last year and a half and you've been you know exactly exactly over here in california dealing with a heatwave incredible proportions you know but seems like we get that a lot you know in a. I'm sure we'll be experiencing some fires this. You're not really looking forward to it. But i got my masks already. You know indoors. I i work from home. Do you work from home as well. Yes yes yes. I do a lot of my stuff from home and whether it's Coaching or whether it's consulting are you know obviously playing. We have to hit the road and do that. But you know Do a lot of my stuff from. Oh yeah for sure syrian speaking hitting the road. Are you going to the wpa this summer. Yeah definitely got a. I'm going to go. Well yeah. I'm gonna go play The online a bunch of the online events not a lot of them probably about five or six of them And then a literally planning my trip right now for october. I i love flying deuce to seven. That's the game that i play a lot of do seven no limit. It's very unusual game but I final tabled at three times. So far finishing runner up once and so i really literally start my first trip focusing on that event and it pivots around bad events or whenever that event is then i kind of go from there This year. it's in the middle which is a little bit unusual usually. It's near the beginning. So that of changes my setup a little bit but you know it is what it is. I'm i i already booked my flight out there now just booking all my hotels and all that nice good so isn't going to be like a two three week trip The first one was supposed to be only a week. But i also do a charity event out there for the one step closer foundation. We do it every summer. usually it's been a planet. Hollywood has been a bally's lately. It's been at aria And if anyone is interested great. 'cause the president who i worked very closely with has cerebral palsy and he started foundation over ten years ago. And we do a poker tournament every year. Usually first prize is anywhere from five to ten thousand dollars with a lot of really cool prizes for the final table so It looks like we might do that again. Obviously we've we couldn't do it last year so we might do it again and so big depending on that. we'll see. it's probably going to be a two week trip to start. Ironically the end of the two weeks is the seniors event. And i actually quote officially. You'll yeah i would've qualified last fifty one now so i would Qualified last year so Yeah i mean. I'm probably a dinosaur right. Now when i say that but feels like yeah yeah right niceness. You are going to play in the senior event or may yeah no. I'm definitely going to play. A lot of people have always said. That's a really good event to play in Like i said. I was excited to potentially. I played the online version of last year. And i got a bunch of people you know. Messaging me being like. What are you doing in this event. I said sorry achieve fifty. It is what it is. I mean. I can't do anything about

"And specifically Robin Ventura. Learned too much about old man strength. Today is the day. 26 year old Robin Ventura. Full of urine and vinegar. After taking a fastball in the back from Nolan Ryan decided Today is the day I fight my dad on the front lawn of the house. He charged Nolan Ryan Nolan Ryan got him in that headlock. And the rest is American Sports. Robin Ventura wasn't the same after that. Was rap. A total rap. New G. He found out what a new G was 30 in the headlock off the rip off the rip. Dude, it looked like a bull was charged him. He just like grabbed a steer. Let's try to take the steer down the crapper. He's like, son. You guys do better than that. Do this, But I do this would side of beef is like £2000 ain't no problem taking your ass. Oh, Robert Venturi thought about it for a second to like he thought about it. And he threw his helmet away around to the mound. He should have thought about it. And then ran to first base. Whatever he thought about he thought wrong. That was that was a that was a poor choice because that Wasn't the bloodiest fight ever. It wasn't the best fight we've ever seen in a baseball field. But that's the one they get through, played over and over and over because it's Nolan Ryan, displaying old man strength. It's the fight that makes the boast sense. Because, of course, Robin Ventura thought today's the day I'm gonna teach the old man a lesson. And, of course, the old man Nolan Ryan decided. No, bro. You go get it. I don't think Nolan Ryan's ever said, bro it in his life. But no, you you go. You get what you want. If it is what you want, I'm gonna go ahead and serve it up to you. And he did it and like there was There was no push it. There was no shoving. It wasn't a testosterone presentation. It was none of that. Hold me back. He got him in that headlock, and he wrapped him in the head and face half a dozen times, but the favorite part to me. Is when he lifted his head up just a little bit to get that last final flush punch in before everybody else. God, Yes, I've watched this video at least. 175 times. Uh, it's just it's perfect because most based brawls don't end up being a brawl or It. You just like you don't really see anything because it's a It's a massive bodies and arms and legs or whatever is perfect man is perfect. It's just two dudes in the middle of the diamond. Going at it. Well, one guy going into the other guy more accurately. Well, uh, I would imagine. That the Rangers Got their step late because they knew it was going to happen there. Like all right, guys gonna come out and you're correct. Give it to them. So let's go ahead and give it to him. And the White Sox were probably like, bro. What are you doing? What are you doing? Nolan Ryan, you do insurgent. Nolan Ryan kid. Nobody charges. Nolan Ryan. And I was surprised Nolan and drill them again. Just for having the audacity detergent just like you and do that. You're gonna take this as kicking then or do you again just for coming out here and inconveniencing me. That's what we're going to do. That was amazing. Did you know I just saw this? It's on Twitter. So the accuracy of this is probably a question, but that's not gonna stop me. Oh, if it's on Twitter, there's no doubt the accuracy is in question. Nolan Ryan didn't get kicked out of that game. He didn't I would be amazing if that's true. I mean, that's that's like when when we talk about Kurt Rambis getting close line and it wasn't a flagrant foul wasn't a technical file. It was just Regular ass foul. I mean, this is the baseball equivalent of that If it's true if no. Laurent didn't get kicked out of the game after after giving the beach to Robin Ventura, that's That's a cherry on top of an already amazing dessert. That is, that's a triple. You took one in the back. You got your ass kicked, and then you got the boot and he got to stay here. The the dude that beat you up. Didn't get kicked out of school. Damn That's just man. Oh, you couldn't have taken anymore else in the matter about 15 seconds. What? What's what's it? Robin Ventura was not the same after that. At all. At all In my mind, That's when Robin Ventura just walked into the sea and and died. We never heard from him again, even though I believe he's still alive. Uh oh, man. I believe Robin Ventura at one point, maybe still does have the all time Consecutive hit record in college baseball. I believe you're correct E seven games or something like that. It was he was an amazing hitter were Oklahoma State, maybe a decade could rake And he also had one of the more Uh, incredible home runs. That wasn't a home run. I think it was in the World Series against the Yankees, or maybe it was in the NLCS. Remember this because, of course, there's a gambling angle attached to it. I didn't have the game, but I knew what the number was. And I was sick of there's no way the skin didn't go over. And he hit the Grand Slam and that put the game over. Except for the fact teammates mobbed him after he touched second base. All he got was a double two R B. I s and they end up winning by one instead of three. In the game stayed under. I believe it's something stupid like that. It was like, Oh, man, Are you kidding me? And you've got a grand Slam a walk off Grand Slam. I want to say World Series. And you don't even get to tell people you ever walk up and slam because if they look at the stats of like, I see you have a walk off double. I didn't see a walk off Grand Slam and have to tell the whole story. We'll head over the wall and my teammates, You know, they just like like he should have went full. Travis Ishikawa like he better get the hell out of my way. I'll run your ass over to get to home plate because this is going to be home run. He just it was a mob of Metz at 2nd 99 NLCS Game five NLCS like I'm single. Yeah. Is that what he didn't even make it a second? Nope. Not at all. Not at all. Damn. He didn't get the extra base hit out of it. Robin Ventura 16 years in, uh, in the league managed the White Sox for five seasons..

"Was the athletic director at vanderbilt candice story lee when she issued a public statement which we shared with you earlier which brought this to light for. The first time. Clinton had tweeted something. But there's a big difference between a reporter tweeting something in the athletic director of the university in question making a public statement so i. I don't know the answer to this. But i'm assuming is not a very very good thing. I have spoken to john cone of mississippi state and the statement that kansas issued is this. I am deeply troubled that some of our student athlete. Parents were subjected to racist slurs. During last night's game this is. This is absolutely unacceptable and disgraceful behavior and such hateful. Language has no place anywhere in our society to the family members who were impacted. Please know that you have my full support. So i was taught as a young journalist never to to make assumptions. Let me finish with john cone statement. We joined vanderbilt in declaring such behaviour unacceptable and indirect conflict with evaluating both institutions and our fan base. The college world series serves as a celebration of the entire sport of college. The Truth About Poker Staking

"Was a point many years ago now where i went to the world series and a friend gave me some money to play with and i had my own mind but he wanted to take me in so we picked certain events. I think for and so like i didn't cash like the first like seven of them or something like that so that was fairly deep in the hole and i remember realizing like oh i have to have a big score just to make even a little bit of money on this deal now so now of course you want to be playing for the big score anyway but it means i'm going to be higher various than otherwise would be. I'm going to gamble it up more. And i'm gonna gamble up more or be more high variance than i think is optimal because for me it is but for the like. That's not good. That's not good but it still might be a plus spot for the. I think it probably was. Don't get me wrong is a tough one. I mean people have solved this way better than i have. I have. I have staked players in the past. I know you have to sure we've done it together. It's we've won we've lost doing. I had one individual vendor. They want really well for me. They guided me against but it worked out really well for me about five years ago but anyway doesn't matter. Point is like it's tough to know how to structure it to make the incentives perfect. So you don't get screwed. Is the backer really really tough. Makeup seems necessary but if somebody's in the whole for twenty binds and they feel like they're just like i have no income and i'm supposed to spend like forty hours a week playing for you but i have to give it all to you so you have to come up with some structure where they get some of the backup. It's like a partial makeup deal but then it can take forever to get your money out in makeup deals. It's it's it's

"They are moving the world series to the fall time in case anybody just now tuning in. And they haven't heard that it's going to be in the fall time so that'll be interesting but Summertime and poker to me just just goes together right. Yeah a so. I think i'm keeping my options open for vegas this yea time. Yeah or for the summer. Okay so full. Yeah this year. Twenty twenty one twenty two twenty two fairly confident i will be. There will be back in the summer right. You say hopefully. I mean i like it to be in the autumn fall. Is you guys say. Well there's pros and cons to each right so i think if it's in the fall time my concern would be that the field sizes would be smaller because people who have families like the kids are back in school and you know although some. Maybe they're not going to be able to come. But then that's a double edged sword too because if the filter smaller than maybe have a better chance but that maybe you don't because the filter smaller and they're filled with only stone cold killers to. I don't know right And then of course. The price of are smaller ethanol smaller. Yeah good to see what happens this year and two while the numbers alike like Yeah i think there's been some debate as to how busy and how popular. Ob at that time of the year. Building High Performance Teams Peernovation Leo Bottary - burst 09

"What do we need to be looking for when it comes to the right people. A great question So when we think about it. I'll translate it from when you look at a ceo. Peer advisor eager. For example there are kind of three factors involved in making sure that you've got the right people in the room. One is as ceos they all share this common challenge of what it's like to sit in that chair and have to make decisions for an entire organization the level of empathy and understanding around what that looks like for them. That's number one. Secondly there has to be some shared understanding of the values of what it takes to be a really great contributor to the group. What does that look like. It's being curious. It's being open. It's being a non judgmental. It's being any number of things that kind of create that culture around what it means and what it takes to be a really great contributor to the group and third. There is a diversity factor. Too right you want different voices around that table who can contribute All of their experiences and ideas That are able to really lend to a really holistic conversation so when we think about it for our companies. It's very much the same thing right. We're looking at the role and we're looking at a commitment to whatever Our company does right. We have some shared values around what it takes to be really successful not just anywhere but successful in this organization. As you know. One of the things i talk about in the book is asking your current employees. Hey what does it take to be successful here. What does it mean to be. Successful here versus. Maybe the people who don't make it. What does that look like. You'll get a lot of people who presumably are there because they're really good at their job Who are going to be like. Well let me tell you what it takes to make disorganization you know. And they'll talk about it with some real pride in terms of some of those little it factors that takes be successful there and i do think that obviously diversity plays a huge play in this as well you know. We want people from different walks of life different experiences different backgrounds. can really contribute to a team in a way. That's really powerful. we all. I think have unique gifts to bring to the table and as long as we look to one another and recognize those gifts. See them as special and get to know I think one another and trust one. Another for those gifts There's no telling what a team is able to do. So having the right people is foundational to it. So i'm gonna. I wanna talk about some of these things here because you made a quote About teams quickey page twenty. Four teams are like snowflakes. No two are the same by the way. I think that's funny. No two are the same so having the right people on the team who will get the job done matters why you need people with the right skills and work ethic. They also have to be the kind of people who understand that team is bigger and more capable than any individual in a nutshell based on my reach research with groups and teams. Then we talk about these. Three categories Common purpose and then shared values and behavior and then Diversity and inclusion. I thought this was kind of interesting because you gave us some other little in all in that little quote gave some other things. Get the job done right skills. Work ethic understand that the team is bigger than any individual. I thought i thought these were some really unique characteristics and qualities that you kind of pulled into that little quote. We'll think about what teams are capable of right One of the exercises. That i mentioned in the book that i've done keynotes for example as the last summer to stand up and ask them about their favorite sports team. And they'll tell me who it is. And i said all right. Let's pretend that We'll call it the boston red sox and pitching the bottom of the ninth. Win the world series. I want you in real time. The kind of three to one to behave as you would. In that moment that they win the world series right and so you go three two one and they clap and yell and scream and everything else and it's fun because no matter how extroverted they are. They're gonna feel pretty self conscious not doing that in front of a bunch of people so we everyone clapped that person and all that but then we get everyone involved. We now pick the team in your mind that same kind of scenario three to one and of course when you have a whole hall or groom of pool of people they'll blow the roof off the place and the two things that i think you get one is the exponential result of what we can do together right too often. We try to fill the room with sound all by ourselves. If we just ask for a little help see what we can accomplish. But i think the second part of it also is that you know that first person as i mentioned. Who's doing it alone.

I used to ride a bicycle to whoever's house was having the game and we and we played for money we played for nichols dives and quarters. I played when i came to california. I started playing in the car groups. That were down in gardena. They used to close at four o'clock in the morning and they be closed for two hours and woken up again at six. So we go sleep in our car and then come back at six o'clock and play. My favorite rooms. Were the monterey the rainbow which were right at each other they only you could only play five card. Draw high or five cards rallo. That were the only games offered back. Then and i kind of got away from it for a few years and then when they opened up the car groups again in the nineteen eighties. Were they allowed him to play. Seven card. stud. Hi lo split. "They sure have what's going on everybody welcome into i. take how `Bout Must. Be. Nice Jessica does to be an l. a sports fan in A. Native Their Second Championship in the month of October, the dodgers first title and thirty two years getting it done in six games I'm going to start with you. Obviously, WE'RE GONNA get to Justin Turner the positive Cova test and the repercussions from him coming back on the field but. What was the biggest story line from this win game six first of all before I say that I just want to extend my happiness to the Los Angeles dodgers. Tinseltown is now titled Town, The Basketball Team, the NBA champions the baseball team will world series champions, major major profit Irvin, Magic Johnson who are call last night him so happy for him and arrest the dodgers organization and I'm happy for Kershaw to I'll leave a lot of that too max having said all of that. Let me say. I'M NOT GONNA say it's the worst decision in world series history for Kevin. Cash. To take out Blake's now but I gotta say this to you. I don't all one worse I remember when Dusty Baker took out a kid or if I remember correctly Max and gave six but at world series with Barry Bonds and giants up five to nothing about to win the chip and Dusty Baker made that mistake and I love me some dusty Baker I remember something like that. But this was such an horrendous decision that even on a day where we clearly need to celebrate the dodgers, we can't ignore what we witness Blake's now look like the CY. Young. Award. Winner from twenty eight, eighteen, he had thrown seventy three pitches forty eight strikes, eighteen batters he faced he struck out. Hundred Miles our. Ma. Ma. Maybe he was doing he was dealing and you take him out. Because analytics I told you about them damn analytics and let me tell you something. We'll go in listen we I'M NOT GONNA take up too much time because I know we got data talk about this because I'm saying it was. Excusable stuff. I. Don't give a damn. What the analytic say this dude is grow is dealing you got to is there got any kind of vision. You do not pull that dude, and you could see how it just deflated deflated the Tampa Bay rays because monkey bet milder Dave. Roberts, he was happy that Blake's now left and as a result what's the first thing? He does he smacks. The double okay, and then you could just see the light just get zapped right out of Tampa Bay rays. It was an an excusable decision. There is no excuse why don't give a damn what analytics state I don't give a damn what number. This is why you gotTa Have Basketball People Baseball people football people. So mistakes like this can't be made got to us for reason, kids read it. And go I'm giving it to you hold on because in the end what it comes down to is that is what happened because you consider them make a legitimate argument snow was still pitching. They WanNa get and listen. It's you might have been thinking about you know what? He's facing the top of the lot or my. And in a to in game seven, you gotta get through game six cash glue it, and that's a damn chain leaving y'all let me just start with the analytics. That's an absurd point. I can't believe you made a point that ridiculous on. National I tried to definitely believe. Me Get this straight analytics was supposed to be infallible. No, no decision is infallible. Right you. What they do is they help you make better decisions that doesn't mean that they always turn out to be the right. Okay. Sometimes, you can play the analytics and lose that. If analytics let's say make you seventy percent of the time correct right instead of just fifty fifty that means. Time you're going to be into. Saving. You. I'll get you on that. Sir Let's go. That's the first thing. The second thing is forget about analytics. Okay. Okay. Justify I thought it was wrong decision when he made the move I thought this dude is dealing leave him in, but I can absolutely justified the call. First of all, let's talk about Kershaw the game before the very previous game kershaw was yanked five and two thirds I was like you sure you WanNa take kershaw out now and it worked. So Dave Roberts is world series champion manager and we love him if it didn't work why did he take Kershaw out? Those are the tough just Go, get you like those are the tough decisions now. Why. Would you take out? He hasn't gone six innings in forever right? Coming off the arthroscopic surgery. Why would you take snell out in a one run game when the lineup seen him twice and guy just Is In scoring physician. Awesome. You're thinking to yourself I think I like my chances better with fresh arms out of the bullpen. Especially, if you have alive or not that the lineup hasn't seen yet, I wouldn't have made the decision we agree about that but I can't say it's the most indefensible decision. I've ever seen. It was clearly the story of the game that and the fact that the dodgers win for. The first time in thirty two years, I'll save my kershaw stuff for later. Go Ahead Jessica I'm think think of all the great world series moments that we've had think of the Madison Bumgarner type moments that honestly I don't think happened if analytics played the number one rule for why do I? Mean? That's the word series. I mean it's been rick look at Randy arose arena is he going to be hall of? Famer probably not but he's hit ten home runs. He's been ridiculous because that's what the world series does to people. They go to next level and that was blake snow and I get the numbers everything that you've seen about him and I understand honestly that is a huge part of this game but I think back okay I'm GonNa take you back to two thousand, seventeen and Stephen and you were asking when was The last time a bad call like this happen was actually dodgers against the Astros Doc Roberts pulled richhill four kids on my Asia and ended up being an hour horrific decision. Why because richhill dealing putting on my Anna and the Astros just start crushing him the end up losing the world series everyone Steve Roberts to be fired. I completely agree I mean Blake's now was on another level. This is the best of. In. All of baseball they were missing the ball by about this much mookie Betts, Cory Seager, cody bellinger I don't care who you run up there. They were not going to hit the fastball. They weren't gonNA touch the slider curveball was stupid good Justin Turner how to strike out but bounds twice in the dirt they don't even chase and they did against this guy. So clearly, that's it but we've seen teams have to evolve in learn I feel like Dave Roberts has had to learn that lesson because he's lost to world series in the past because he's yanked guys too early based on just the. That's. The justice. His point first of all, don't bring him excuse me and I know we're GONNA get into later in terms of his performance but I'm saying don't bring up Kershaw as that example because we all know it wasn't just about analytics. It was about the fact that cursed your head of history that you have documented is. No? No. No I'm saying it's facto. Matt's the facts. No not always not always match not. Playing. The number what in the in the case of per show Kershaw, you're not just talking about numbers you're talking about reality you've seen unfold in situations at times in the past not all the time but there were when you talked about how the great may be the greatest Pitcher Evan regular but in the postseason he folded so I'm saying psychologically that might play a factor into the bandages decision but let me get back to the other part about. This is the thing that really really drives me. Crazy. And this is why can't as much as I love baseball I also can't stand it because my father I was basically to sit down, make me watch these Games is what drives because it's a let me get this straight I gotta do this deal it. He's putting on a show. He looks absolutely positively ocular and he's going up against the top dodger lineup and what is the what is the belief? You don't face him or face.

"Do you think about the dodgers roster? They already have the reigning Mvp with cody. Bellinger they also have the former. Mvp AND CY young winner with Clayton Kershaw. So how all of these. Big noted players sort of fit together on one roster. They fit together like a lovely twenty six piece puzzle. And and that's the beauty of what the dodgers have done. They have constructed a roster. That really doesn't have. I'm not gonNA say any but doesn't have clearly visible flaws in that particularly goes for the everyday lineup. I mean you can put any number of players that any number of positions you can cody bellinger and Centerfield. One day playing first base. The next day. Compla- Max Muncie at first base and we can shift them over to second where. Oh by the way Gavin Lux whose top-five prospect and all baseball is GONNA play as well but if he's not there and if there's a left on the mound you can put key Gate Hernandez in their second base and he absolutely destroys lefthanded pitching. He also can play left field. Maybe a little bit of Centerfield but you've got AJ pollock and left field to you. Know if there's a right hander. Anyone Output Jack Petersen in there he crushes right handed pitching in. You've got cory seager. Shortstop Justin Turner Third. Will Smith is going to be a star behind the plate in bets guy in right field. You're talking about an incredible group of talent. But you're also talking about an incredible payroll that just was able to recklessly go. Add mookie betts because they wanted to when you look at a team like the orioles this year spending what forty five million dollars on their entire payroll and the dodgers are spending close to two hundred twenty. I mean it's just that level of imbalance as the rich seemingly get richer. Is that good for baseball. Yeah it's not great. It's not great but that's what happens when you have an UNCAPPED SYSTEM. That's also what happens when you're in a sport where money doesn't necessarily equal success if the dodgers just went out spending money like literally that's all they did. We've seen that before. We saw that with the New York Yankees throughout the two thousand. Ten's didn't work and and I think the Yankees really change their mindset and started understand what the dodgers have long understood. Which is you cannot be successful doing what you do. If you're not developing players from within if you're not counter-balancing those larger salaries with minimum salaries from players that you have developed whether it's via the draft or international free agency. You have to have a balance of those two and when you see the number of players that the dodgers have developed it shows just how great their farm system really has been for everything that we've talked about the greatness of the when you look at the National League across the board when teams should the dodgers the most worried about no one. I mean. Look when you have a system in which there is a five game series. You should be afraid of everyone but over the course of one hundred sixty two game season. There's nobody who's going to challenge the dodgers. There's just not I mean the Arizona diamondbacks Jason a really good team. They're probably going to be double digits behind the dodgers in the National League West. Even if you go out east let's look at the defending world series champions The Washington nationals. Good the really. Good the got Max Shurer. They've got Stephen Strasburg. And Patrick Corbin Audible Sanchez in the rotation. They beat the dodgers last year. Even though they didn't have as much talent. That's the trouble with going as far in on. Mookie Betts as the dodgers. Did I absolutely think it was the right move? I absolutely think that it was at the right time but in the end when we look back on the two thousand twenty season there is a possibility and not an insignificant possibility either that the dodgers lose in the division series like they did last year and at that point with bet steel. Be Worth it. I mean the answers gotta be no right. Well let me counter that though I mean the answer is no anytime you acquire player. Sure I understand world series or bust but the dodgers are making money. Anyway they WANNA look at it so they're putting themselves in the best chance to try and win a World Series Championship. Is it as simple for the organization as World Series or bust? Yes I think it is at this point I think. The dodgers judge their seasons where they are right now with the talent. They have based on whether they have a gold ring encrusted with diamonds. That they're giving out on opening day the next year or whether they don't I think it is that binary and certainly you can take positives out of a season which you don't win a world series and have good feelings about the things that you achieve that accomplished but if you were to give truth serum to everybody in that organization. I think everyone would say we. WanNa win and we want to win. Now if you had to decide to to come in with an educated opinion and you're risking my house on it not yours my house on our friendship and it's dodgers of the field to win it all this year. Who who you take it. I'm GonNa take your question and twisted a little. If you had one team to choose to win the world series this year. Who WOULD IT BE? My answer would be the Los Angeles dodgers..

"world series" Discussed on ESPN Daily

"Jeff Passan how are you doing on this fine wonderful day? I am both fine and wonderful Jason. Thank you Jeff. Passan covers major league baseball for ESPN. He's been in Florida and Arizona reporting on Spring Training. So we're GONNA talk dodgers today and they might be the biggest story because of what they did this off season that starts with the massive trade with the Red Sox if you had to give the mookie Betts trade story a tagline mookie betts the dodgers blank. It happened then. It didn't happen and then it happened again and the fact that it happened. I think really salvaged in offseason for the dodgers where their fans felt like they were. Fiddling is Rome Burns and it was interesting because if the dodgers had not gone out and traded for mookie Betts this winter or the spring as it were they still would have been the best team in the National League and they would have been the best team in the National League probably by a pretty healthy margin but to go out and get a guy who is arguably the second best player in baseball really speaks to just how important winning now is for this organization. I wanted to give everybody a peek behind the curtain of Jeff Passan. So walk me through those sort of the moment. You've I started hearing that this could be on the horizon. Well off season. There was a feeling that somebody big was going to get moved and you know as as time ticked away going towards spring training. The sentiment was that that was less and less likely. I remember getting a text and it was very simple. It said mookie dodgers traction and when you get something like that you know the alarm bells. Go off a little bit. I started poking around hearing. Yeah there may actually be some legs this deal but there were so many different iterations of it in terms of water the dodgers gonNA TAKE BACK IS PRICE. GonNa go with him. What sorts of prospects would they give up? We're following a developing story. That could be a blockbuster in baseball. The dodgers are in deep discussions to acquire star right fielder. Mookie betts from the Red Sox and bit of a snag in the mookie. Betts deal to the dodgers. The blockbuster three-way trade has been held up because of questions surrounding me health of at least one player. Pitching Prospect Bruce. Dr Red Sox didn't like the medical congressional who had Tommy John Surgery in the past. It started to come together and then obviously it looked like it might fall apart for a moment. What your thoughts. When it looked like the deal was sort of breaking up. The dodgers were not going to let mookie. Betts play for another team this year. Even as Boston and Minnesota we're negotiating and trying to figure out their end of what was supposed to have been a three way trade and when that did not happen. The dodgers stepped in and said you know what we are going to make this deal happen and it's exactly what they did and that bets blockbuster. It's reworked but done Boston agreeing to send two thousand eighteen. Al Mvp Mookie. Betts pitcher David price to the dodgers for outfielder. Alex do go. And prospects jeeter downs encounter Wong. Boston also said we've talked a little bit about the deal but I wanNA talk about Mukhi specifically what makes him so. Unique is player issues graded everything he hits. For average he hits for power. He's an excellent base runner. He's arguably the best right fielder defensively in the game. He's a good clubhouse presence. Nice guy what can you bring to this team this franchise the help and finally bring a championship to La? I'm GonNa do everything I can bring. My energy reminds Simon Work. Work hard Trying to rub off that way. I know there's a lot of guys that work hard and do everything they can't hear and so I'm just GonNa be here at onto that. Should make our case for twenty twenty world series for sure. You look at Mookie Betts and you try to find fault with him and you just can't I mean the worst thing you can say about. Mookie Betts is. He hasn't been a superstar in the postseason. He's going to get a chance to play in the postseason again this year health permitting. And if he's out there in October on the biggest stage with free agency about to hit I feel like that is his time to absolutely shine and show everybody why he believes that he's going to be baseball second. Four hundred million dollar player next to my trap. And what's interesting is that you said earlier. The dodgers fans were restless even though they would have gone into the season likely as the best team without Mookie Betts. So why was it actually necessary to acquire mookie? It wasn't necessary optimal. Sometimes when you understand just how good your talent is and what the landscape is across the rest of baseball. You realize that it's worth going for it that sitting around and trying to get as much surplus value as you can might not win you a championship now. Trading for Mookie. Betts might not win you championship either but you certainly have a better chance at doing so when you have him in the middle of a lineup. That already is pretty devastating. I promised we wouldn't talk entirely about the Astros but there is an element of this conversation. That is Astros based or at least saw signs dealing based when you look at the way the seventeen and eighteen world series went down. How much does that play into the way that they approached the off season this year? Yeah I don't think it's an element I think it's a large part of it. Honestly I mean let. Let's look at what the dodgers have done. They've won seven straight National League West Championships and they bowed out in the S. The first time around in two thousand thirteen and they did it in the lcs again in two thousand sixteen when you get to two thousand seventeen and you're playing in the world series and you have a team that's one hundred four games and you feel like they are every bit as good as the Astros and then they go and lose in game seven at the Houston. Astros have claimed that city's first ever World Series Championship. That is a gut punch. And when you come back the next year and you run into a team in the Boston Red Sox that has just buzzsaw through the playoffs. You know that hurts to the Boston. Red Sox baseball all season. They have water at a celebration begins and now to look back and know that the two thousand seventeen astros had spent the season and according to Rob. Manfred the playoffs as well cheating. We have a developing story in major league. Baseball has launched an investigation into allegations. That the Astros Centerfield camera to help steal signs during their two thousand seventeen championship brunt and to look at the accusations and allegations against the two thousand. Eighteen Boston Red Sox and to believe that at some point in the near future maybe at the end of this week we're going to have a better accounting of what they potentially did. Mlb says it will investigate allegations that the red sox used their video replay system to steal sides during the world series winning season in two thousand eighteen. That hurts and that sort of thing that sticks in your psyche as much as you want to wipe it out of your mind and say there's nothing we can do. There's no sense in looking back. How can you not you just said it? Sometimes it's best to move forward. Is there still value for the dodgers continuing to air their grievances continuing to shed with it? I mean as a reporter who loves players speaking their minds. Of course there's a wonderful intentive cody bellinger and Justin Turner in particular or quite outspoken. On the topic. I mean these guys are cheating for three years altuve as stolen. Mvp from judge in seventeen. Everyone knows they stole the ring from us. It's hard to feel like they earned it and they earned the right to be called champions. I I know personally. I lost respect for those guys. Everyone in the show in the big leagues lost respect for those guys. I think it's pretty obvious. That whatever the commissioner thought he did he didn't do it very well. They said all of the things that so many players around baseball felt but they said them from the perspective of someone who is actually deeply harmed by this to have the ability to win that championship. For what would have been the first time in almost three decades at that point taken away from you really still angers the dodgers and brought them out. Maybe a strong anyone around the game. I think they've said their piece at this point and I think they need to lead their game. Speak the rest.

Eagle global logistics faced complaints with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission about alleged racial discrimination and discrimination against women in the workplace and this was back in the nineties so again years before he bought the Astros but the Zee did issue a report confirming those findings in the company ended up settling for nine million dollars so we talked a lot about the astros reaction to this in many ways the astros action is the story but what has Major League Baseball's Reaction Been Mentally Baseball has said that they are investigating and that they're you know they they said really declined to comment further until they finish their investigation I've heard they do have investigators on the ground in in Houston who are now looking into this who will talk to the reporters who saw it happen if they do conclude that the report is true they can issue fines or suspensions or other sanctions on along those lines and so What do you think needs to happen going forward well I think is Ken Rosenthal wrote in his column yesterday if the Astros aren't going to fix this or or reacts in the Right Way then that means Major League baseball has to I think they need to step in with fines or suspension or some combination of those things and to really make clear in this clubhouse incident but they still have a world series to play what kind of a role do you think Roberto Suna will play on the mound in the series precision and go back go back to covering baseball I will try. "So again other than kinda giving me a little bit of a panic attack because i had the make it back to the studio and i wasn't expecting it to be 228 it was a very very good first game of the world series gp kershaw now six in one with a three three nine era in his last ten playoff games and yes there will still be people who want to criticise them that's too bad it doesn't matter any more or less this guy comes out for game five and completely blows it and i ain't that i don't imagine how that's possible at this point he's pitching so well but after gives that the home run of course social media this guy's given up homerun after homerun ball i mean that's going to happen from time to time given up a home run though in seven straight postseason starts that's the only thing you can knock of four because everything else he did tonight was just about perfect yeah it was a set of very very well pitch game and i'm just happy for him to go out there listen you know he here's the critics in mecca told you he he'll never the guy's a pro he's always going to answer the kerr the correct answer he's gonna answer the the question with the correct answer and uh but you know deep down inside you've seen his competitiveness you remember when we were on on the show that one time and the opposing pitcher was walking through the field and you remember how matti got so you know the dudes gut fire when he's on the mound heats takes a lot of pride and what he does and so i'm sure that he took that to the mouth with him and now he's you know under his breath go on everybody can eat it.
