"You work on WP engine and this is what I would consider probably the best WordPress hosting system, or at least up there. And I think people might have the perception that WordPress is easy to run. It's been around forever. Simple application front end with a database attached to it. But in fact, there are lots of complexities to making a scalable WordPress deployment system. Could you outline some of those complexities? What makes scaling WordPress hard? Yeah, and I appreciate the compliment there about WP and I agree that I think we're one of the best. And we've put a lot of engineering effort into building our platform to be very scalable and very performant for customers of all sizes. When I think about sort of scaling applications in the cloud or modern application architectures, I think about the 12 factor apps kind of approach that Heroku engineers put out years ago. And these are principles for application design around how you manage state, how you deal with deploying the software, and WordPress doesn't really follow those principles. It sort of predates those principles. And so for instance, there's in app upgrades and you can install the plugins and themes from directly within the running app. And the consequence of that is that state about what the software that's running needs to be shared by any replica that you have of the application. And so we at WP engine as well as other platforms out there, no doubt. This is a core concern. It's sort of a tradeoff between the flexibility that you give to your end user in terms of do I want those features and the performance or the scalability of the site. And we at WP engine tend to skew that choice in terms of giving builders, flexibility in terms of how they build their site, how they manage their site within WordPress. We give them the flexibility and take on the burden ourselves of ensuring that we can scale up and scale down that we have a fast performance file system that we have caching in front of it that ensures that most of the traffic doesn't actually require PHP execution, which is the language that WordPress is built in. And of course, we also integrate with CDN partners to provide the static content as close to the end user as possible as well as provide things like DDoS protection and other things that if you're going to do it yourself. These are all kind of concerns that you would have to have to worry about just to get the kind of scale that we have at WP engine. What are the constraints of having an application that is purely built around PHP? Yeah, PHP has come a long way. I would say constraints wise, the PHP runtime is execution is single threaded as opposed to something like a node.js where it has sort of process switching and embedded in it. So you get a request for a PHP execution, when the database query is being executed, the PHP code just waits, and that process or thread can't go on to do other work while it waits for IO is happening in the database. So you have sort of a more constrained memory usage because you have to you have to keep that process waiting for the IO. That's sort of the big difference between PHP runtimes and other modern web stacks. Can you give me a sense of the deployment model for a given application? So my website software engineering daily runs on WP engine. What is it being deployed in? Yes, so I didn't go look in our systems to see exactly where you're being deployed. But our platform has undergone an evolution likely you're on a more or less a lamp stack, so we have MySQL Apache with mod PHP, a varnish cache in front of that to provide page caching, and then we front it with nginx that allows you to have rules around redirects and rewrites as well as efficiently serve your media content that's stored on the disk. That's the core of our stack and then of course a CDN in front of that. And so what are the places where you can leverage the economies of scale, the fact that you're running tons and tons of WordPress rather than lots of ad hoc applications? Yes, so I think there's some things definitely in our caching configuration that applies across a variety of WordPress environments. Definitely most websites on our platform have very bursty traffic patterns. So very few websites are getting significant traffic all the time and obviously when you get up into the top 100 top thousand sites, you're getting constant traffic. But in the main traffic is very bursty. And so our platform does is able to sort of share the resources across multiple different WordPress sites, and we have proprietary technology to make sure that no site is monopolizing resources and that traffic that when your site gets gets traffic, it's going to get served efficiently. Podcast your course i. I'm not gonna go so far as to say it's essential. But i think it is one of the best marketing and promotion tools that you can have for promoting your course and here's why people need to know like entrust you when they're buying a course from you. I learned this the hard way i thought. I'll just put out a course that people wanna learn about and they'll buy it right very field of dreams approach if i build it. They will come. I have a big audience in the wordpress base. My first course was how to build a blog and that was a failure for several reasons. First of all it was fully text based course when especially something like that lends itself to screen casts right. I'm where i'm talking about how to build a blog wordpress. There should be a video tutorials for step by step instructions how to do something not just texting screen shots second of all. There's too much free content on exactly how to do that but third of all people didn't know me for starting a blog. People knew me as a wordpress developer and so when people saw this offering they thought sure joe has a blog. But what is joe know about starting and growing and more importantly monetize ing a blog. I see no proof that he really knows how to do that. So people didn't. They knew me. What it does is it allows your fans or your listeners. To basically right on your website like click a button and basically record a voice message for you. So i know a lot of podcasters do this. They want to allow their listeners. To basically send in voicemail and instead of using an actual phone number you just get one of these plug ins for if you're using if you have a wordpress website or there's other ways to embedded on other websites as well. "Now the first thing that we do is we break our stages of the work that we do into the common areas that we have for a business so obviously a websites. One content is another. You'll have access to these list for marketing. But essentially what we'll do. Is it almost run. Somebody through this like an assessment will tick off all the boxes they can answer yes to and then the ones that they answered no to. That's what we'll go to work on. And that's really one of the beauties of milestone thinking is that there really are only two two answers yes or no so we're not gonna have a question or a milestone. But i would just go with one of their websites. Chop fi is just such a good platform and they have built such an amazing solution for e commerce businesses. If you're an e commerce. You bring people in from not knowing you bringing them along the awareness journey and bringing them to the point where they become a customer and become an pretty excited about your business to keep buying and buying and buying but the real way that i look at a funnel and the way that a lot of online or funnel is that is that way to get the sale for specific aid. So whether it's an email sequence. That is saying i know you don't know about this. This product all the way to get you on a sales page and by or it's the landing pages that leads you from jumping on a landing page. Seeing the of the words that get them to relate to you understand that they need this product hitting that buy button buying. And that's that's what i bill. That's the main part of my business. You're not ready for that. Get rid of that. Yeah i think they often don't even know When they do that kind of thing whether it's click funnels or one of these other like fang pools kind of thing objects. They don't always know what a funnel is or what A marketing system is or something like that so they buy it. It's the solution when what they don't understand us. It's actually just part of an overall concept. So are there alternatives to click funnels for building funnels. Are there other ways that you can do it. I mean click funnels. obviously that's a good one But are there other ways to do it too. There are other ways to do it. So you can stick with the funnel builder so before you can use lead pages which is a cheap way of doing it. Almost on the cheaper end of the scale and you can easily pages. So that's great and you can connect a whole bunch of pages together. If you are also going to do it. You could use grew funnels. New one and their marketing. The fact that they are free for lifetime right now you can use f apps or you can do or you can almost bootstrap it and use plug ins on wordpress and that is another great way to do it but again since the way in which you sell is also very much relationships based so if you have a great email lists that came in from either a summit or some other lead magnet you can also do a complete funnel via email in create those relationships without ever having to build a funnel builder. If you don't need to spend a ton of money on a system to get it to do the same thing may be that's not the best investment for you instead. They need graphics for youtube or graphics for ats graphics for the website. All that kind of stuff. So i was realizing. Hey if you're selling facebook ads. It's a good business. But companies need more. They need a full service solution and they want to have a full service solution because they do not want to have usa facebook guy and another one for google ads and another one to grade sales funnels. They want to have one agency one person to talk about their marketing stuff and outsourced that so by realizing that was thinking about. Hey how can. I build an agency like that. Because i'm only a one man show in the half other businesses to manage. And i'm quite good at facebook ads but i have no idea about google ads or some other stuff like billing websites or developing some stuff stuff like that so i need people for this. Hiring people from my country from germany is quite expensive so if you would hire a designer for example that custody around three thousand dollars a month so basically. It's an euros but yeah three thousand dollars a month. That's quite the same so this was too expensive for me okay. That was just not possible. So i needed to have another solution and then i came on the idea. The possibility to hire people from the overseas from the philippines pakistan india countries. Like that. why. Because these people were a lot of more cheaper than the german guys. So i was starting with that was trying that and some positive experiences some negative experiences but in general it was good in general it was working so i need to find myself a way to find people who are fitting into my company and were having a very high quality and this was the key to build and scale might digital marketing agency. Because as i mentioned i wouldn't have been able to hire three four five german guys. That would be just too expensive. But i was able to hire some people from the overseas so i started with hiring a designer and i would recommend you guys this. Start with hiring a designer. Why because definitely there's no company in two thousand and twenty one who do not need a designer in their company because you have so much posibilities to spread content out there and that's why you definitely need to have a designer but the other advantages that designer does not need to have any log in credentials or access to any sensitive data or something like this you can just give them a few pictures and title or anything like that and tell him hey. If you're another developer guy you have no idea if this wella per is good if this is fast or anything like that but the with a designer you see it easily you see easily on. I just proudly recommend that so our starting also they designer and this man helps me to improve my facebook ads because we have awesome designs. And i'm definitely guys not a designed so you can imagine how tremendously the quality was improving by that guy so realizing hey this was working with the design guy. I get one step ahead. I hired someone for google ads. I hired someone for wordpress websites and stuff like that. So i was not only able to provide high quality to my clients with that remote working guys. But you don't get the same experience community wise that you do with software <hes>. In the websites based like yes sure. There's facebook for squarespace or or wicks one up but the interactions are not nearly as as depth as you get in the wordpress based plus these dedicated events. "Has heard that increasing your conversion rates which is the percentage of people who see your offer by it is more important than finding new customers. But how do you do it. One hundred one hundred people coming to your website every day. Let's say one of them signs upper purchases. That's a one percent conversion rate which in some industries is not bad. You could focus on finding two hundred people to see your offer or you can work on trying to increase that conversion rate perhaps to two percent or higher. And of course if you could do that well. The same number of people are coming to your sites or otherwise seeing your offer. But you're converting twice as many or whatever. The number is so conversion rate is very very important. Have been muscled through here. You i've heard about ab testing for example. But it sounds complicated or something. If you have any ideas. I would love to hear those two. Thanks chris gay man. Testing is not only for big companies for anybody. Who's not familiar with this. Ab testing is when there are two versions or multiple versions of a website. Or anything else that you interact with online and you only get to see one of those versions when you're a consumer but the business is actually seeing how different people respond to different copy or different design or some element and over time. They kind of add these things up and say okay well version a. is better than version b. or vice versa. And then you start testing another variable and yes. It can be very sophisticated. So that's why some people think well. This is only for big businesses. Some businesses are constantly testing dozens of variables in adjusting in real time. And such but the reality is a lot of big increases in conversion rate are not gonna come from like these tiny changes in like all the dozens of variables. They're gonna come from a couple of key things. And so if you have a website if you use google analytics showed usually encourage people to do. It's free you can put a tag on your website. And google allows you to a certain number of experiments where you have two different versions of the site wordpress. If you're using that also has free or low cost plug ins so just search wordpress split testing wordpress ab testing. If you shop by. They also have a way to do that. So basically wherever. Your website is hosted. Look and see if there's an easy solution for it if you don't want to try something else just because they are so common now and then once you get going. You should always be testing. Something as i said has the big things. Big things are headlines other messaging pricing in particular. Like i've seen more than once that increasing the price doesn't actually 'cause conversion to go down sometimes so then you make more money on every sale in some cases it may actually go up. A higher price conveys more confidence to buyers depending on the product. And so that's the most important thing that i would start with Delving into that world a little bit a couple of other small things ask for referrals. People are referred to your business. There's this built in trust element compared to just somebody who stumbles upon it. Cold display testimonials and reviews also builds. Competence shows social proof. Perhaps had a guarantee if you don't have one and that depends on the kind of business. Of course i usually say have really bold guarantee like a really strong guarantee or none at all but these are just a couple of tips. Making Content Management A Smooth Experience With A Headless CMS
"For that as compared to traditional cms. Such as wordpress so the same is kind of a weird term admittedly certainly when i started butter. I didn't call it. The that he noted have seen as wise. I never heard about the concept. I thought of butter as what it is about the technical basis which is an api. I see mass meeting sort of api. I approach so there's really two parts to like have the same. Mass one is the api like so the content api which is what. The company's developer's will query content from is the contin api and they pull that content into their own native application built on any tech stack. They want and then the other piece is of course the content dashboard which is where the marketers go in and actually markers clients whoever you know they go in actually manage. The content says easy to use dashboard. You actually go create the actual blog posts or landing pages in that kind of thing upload images do stuff and you don't need to be able to do it so that's what i would have the. Cms is at a very high level. It's really the content api or api's as well as concentrating Itself yeah and so as far as the use case in user experience on how it compares to attract cms like wordpress so on the marketing side on the surface it is somewhat of a similar experience to wordpress in the sense that you know the goal really is to provide the marketer a really easy to use u. y you know they don't need to be able to use it to update continental do their jobs and we're pretty well generally speaking. Certainly that's why it's so popular on the website. Those where things change. It's really kind of a night and day difference so with a hennessy. Mess with butter. You get to work with any tech stack. You get to work with the one that you're most proficient with so you know if you prefer to work with django python you can start there and you build out your own application marketing website using using django and then you plug. Cms cape ability into that. So you plug you know like the company. Pi into your own of native stack with work on the debt side of course wordpress flips. This on you completely so you don't get to start with again assuming you're developer. Who prefers django in this example. If you wanna use wordpress you basically abandoned django got ready. You got a dive into the wordpress world so you start with word processing. Start with it as as sort of complete stack all need to master. Its terminology. how it works the internals of its code base database schema of course diving into php since that's what is built. And so you really go from there. And kinda start hacking slashing workers to customize it to do and behave the way you want it to so it's very different approaches different very different experiences on the development side. Another interesting way to think about the use cases headless masses as you mentioned. You're able to use your tech stack the prefer but if you're already using something like django than what is the benefit of headless versus integrating a framework such as django cms or wag tail into your existing site for being able to manage that content and have it very tightly integrated with the overall application. That you're building django cms wag tail these are. What's i kind of think of as traditional. Cms is every language or framework. Has these where the very often you know. Open source cms built in particular native language django ruby on rails etc and. They're very similar to wordpress. Press in the sense that you know. They are large pieces of software. Or maybe not large all the time but the pieces of software that you need to own so you need to install it you need to host run it. You need to maintain it so you need to patchett in ensure that it stays secure enough date. And you need to customize it in order to customize it if you need to customize beyond sort of its native capabilities native. api then you need to dive into the guts of of how it works. So those are some of the drawbacks with their traditional. See masses they are quite software heavy as opposed to have the cms where in terms of software to adopt this. It's very very light. Software buys so all you're really doing is acquiring the continent pi which returns just the raw content for. Let's say a blog post you.
