It's Sharapover: A Complicated Affair
"Thought we had the weekend off. I thought we had bought ourselves a little bit of time doing that. Mailbox episode but Maria Sharapova decided to upend our brief break and announced her retirement from tennis. Let's not do a whole lung. Preamble about this. We're here because Maria Sharapova has retired and we're here to talk about that to situate her career talk about the the ups and downs of her career and put her career and her into some context. She announced this week via an essay that she wrote for Vanity Fair and Vogue which were released at the same time both conde nast publications. It's the sort of flex that only a player of her magnitude can do. It's been interesting to me to watch her over. I would say probably the past year or a little more and an observed how little attention and how little fanfare has followed her around considering that she was once the highest paid female athlete in the world. She was tennis's biggest superstar for for many years and this latter stage of her career has been quiet. When you say only a player like her obviously Serena can do that too. I Know Naomi can do that too. I think those are the three players in women's tennis who have that kind of stature status to be able to call up an A. Winter. And be like. Hey can I can let y'all know in your publication regardless of who can do it. The point is that Maria is bigger than tennis. In the same way that Serena or Roger or Rafa are Novak are bigger than tennis. They don't have to go through the traditional tennis media to do these things they can call on their sponsors their friends mainstream press. They have that freedom does afford them because they are successful and they make a lot of money. Of course I knew what you meant but I think dealing with a complicated figure like Maria Sharapova comment on us to be as precise as we can with our words so as to not open up ourselves controlled. But we're not doing this. The whole episode. Every every statement about Maria is not an equal statement about serene. We're just not. I agree I'm just saying we can easily cost nothing to be more precise okay. You see what you did there. You put me in a position to be the bad person. Well maybe you shouldn't shouldn't do it anyway. Maria wrote this essay. I think there were probably a few journalists and people within the sport who was coming and we can't release it as a massive surprise considering that her body has been betraying her over the past few years. It's been extremely difficult for her. To stay healthy at this point for even a match or two in a row. Her events have been sparse. It seemed that the writing had been on the wall for a little while. What's interesting to me is that there is no retirement tour. There's no final triumphant moment at a Grand Slam. That meant a lot to her. There's no on-court Farewell. It almost seems I know. Use The word quiet before but it. It just seems a little anti-climactic for somebody who has meant so much to the game for the past fifteen years. Sure but to me. It makes sense because to embark on some kind of farewell tour. You'd have to be able to count on your body to a low to show up for right and I think that's what the bottom line is here for Maria. She told this story in her Vanity Fair Vogue Essay. That just getting on court for her match at the. Us Open last year. Felt like a victory getting the shot in her shoulder Infos cortisone or whatever but just being able to play to numb the shoulder and play in the first round was a big achievement and so she was past the point of being able to plan anything tennis related because their body just wouldn't let her right and I don't think she's the type to be like well. Let me just show up for this first. Rhone have a cute little moment and lose six two six two like. That's not the kind of scripting that she would one. No and she's had an interesting career injury wise because after that big shoulder surgery that she went through with that had really compromised her play. She had to rewrite the way that she served. Her game. Looked quite a bit different than when she was seventeen. Eighteen nineteen years old but she learns how to move on Clay. She wins two French Open. She becomes a dominant player. Again will maybe not a dominant player. But she reaches number one again. She's part of this triumvirate for a little while with Serena and as Aranka all the while dealing with this shoulder issue. That is still very much a problem. It's not just that she won the French Open. She was winning tournaments on clay. Yeah her up until two thousand ten. I believe she had one or made. Just one final unclean. It was green clad. Amelia Island But from two thousand ten words you see Maria making a ton of clay finals in fact the majority of her finals that she makes I believe in the second half of her career come on clay winnings took three times and winning Rome three times. So that's like you said a complete change of course from what we conceive of her to start her. So where do you WANNA start here? Do you WanNa talk about her career on the court and just kind of give a little background where she started where we are now and then I mean the extracurricular things are huge story with Maria as always I wanNA talk about first about her influence one of the things that I've seen since the the announcement that she's retired is some folks. Scoffing at just how much her actual influence was and how much she inspired people and I don't think you can underestimate. Just how much influence Maria Sharapova had in bringing people into tenants. They might not be the reasons that you would want people to come to tennis. But Maria Sharapova is Bar. None globally the most well-known women's tennis player. And we know this. Because Jamaicans don't know what Serena Williams looks like. We know this from schools John's quits. I can't tell you how many times I've interacted with people and they're like what would you like? Well I have a tennis podcast and like Oh Maria sharp over. I'm like do you follow tennis. No but they know who? Marie sharp over yes. Her Persona has cut through so many different facets of life to the point where random people know who she is on top of that. There are a lot of people who the very first match they saw was Maria Sharapova match. And that's the kind of thing that can't control. I was a Cheetah van because the very first match I watched was a continue to match the very first men's match. I watch was an Agassi match. Those are the things that that people hang onto. Because it's their first introduction right so there is that there is the fact that she occupied this place of prominence being the top paid female athletes in the world. For so long we can have a totally different discussion about whether that was warranted or deserved that separate and apart. If you're able to separate those two things then I think you can see clearly that Sharipova mental out to a lot of people and had great influence within the tennis world the sporting world and in society at large globally as well within tennis. She is a polarizing figure. We are not going to pretend like we have always been kind to her on the show. We've had our fun roasting Maria over the years. You've had your fun today with the title for this episode and You know. I'm going to be totally straightforward. Maria is not not a player that I loved to watch play tennis. I can appreciate her place. I respect a lot of things about her. She's not somebody who's matches I- flocked to watch and we've been critical about the way that she wrote about Serena and her bulk about how she handled the IT F. and then water ban and there's a lot going on but she is not an a boring character by any stretch. If you were to look back now and Marie his career what is the one word or the one thing that comes to mind what well? Unfortunately right now. It's Mel Donen. That's the first thing that comes to my e. Yeah like if we're doing plane Word Association. I'm not saying that's fair. Okay but I think when we have some distance when I've been thinking about her career. I'm thinking about winning Wimbledon at seventeen thinking about having a career slam on Sugar Povoa. Her tennis achievements are huge. Because very few women have won a career. Grand Slam. Her off-court achievements are also big and they're also painted by the fact that her blindness and her whiteness made her the perfect foil and the perfect heroin. As opposed to this dominant black champion Serena Williams you know she was the great white hope right again. Another consideration of the great white hope for me. The word is complicated when we covered the muldoon thing. We came down right in the middle of the fence. We come down on either side of the. I think I'm still there actually. It was kind of interesting to go back and look through some of the research done for that episode. What like what three years ago? At this point I'm early. Two Thousand Sixteen when it when it came out so almost four years ago we would have covered this on the show and to now be going through it again are thinking about it again and and feeling the same way like not much has changed for

"Biofeedback we measure things like temperature heart rate sweat gland activity muscle tension breathing brainwaves. And so we know your baseline and then we teach you so for example to warm your hands and if I teach you to warm your hands with your brand. It's an automatic relaxation response. And so it trigger something called a para sympathetic response. So if you think of fighter flight is sympathetic response. Well it's the opposite of that. And so how do you teach someone to warm their hands so I do put a little thermos ter- on their pinkie and go? So what's your temperature and then let's get hand warming images and let's see which one works for you and so we'll write down ten images that you might think would work for you and then we'll spend a couple of minutes on each image and then you know over an hour you have a pretty good sense one if you can do it. Children do it without any problem. Because they don't believe they camped that is super interest but So it could be holding a puppy or putting your hands in front of a fire or holding a cup of DECAF Coffee Hor. Her starts warming people's hands up. Yeah and when you warm your hand it sends a signal to the rest of your body to calm down because when you get stressed your hands get cold and they get sweaty. So when I was a young psychiatrist I used to do a Word Association test with my patients and I would talk about. Well think of a pencil and nothing would happen with their hand temperature. I think of your mother and for me when I think of my mother. My hands get warm. Because she's this really good concept in my head but as soon as you think of your father my hands get cold. Because we had a conflicted relationship I mean. He's actually one of my best friends now but it took a long time to get there so your body responds to every single thought you have.

"They they started off pretty hot ended up seven and four was their best record occurred and they've been bad ever since then but but they had nineteen wins last season. They've already got sixteen this year. The first time since Devon Booker has been in Phoenix that the team is actually improving. They went from twenty three wins to twenty four wins after his rookie season but after that it was twenty one nineteen. And now they're gonNA finish. No No thirtysomething wins if they get into the thirty S. That's a good season. Exactly what we said in the season did we not we were talking about this other. Yeah exactly that would be a great benchmarked for them to hit and it seems like they have an identity. You know Monty Williams has plan hard has them at least trying on defense that the team makes sense. Now that they have a real appoint garden Ricky Rubio de Andrea Eight and miss the big chunk with his suspension. Perhaps the record would be even a little bit better if he were around but the sun's at least finally seemed seemed to be pointing in the right direction. They have a direction which is huge. They made smart moves. It looked like during the off season with even busy Kaminski Sqi who's also injury now and Rubio and during last year with the Kelly oubre. Yeah you're right. I I love it as a Devon Booker Fan like like to see him at least planning a somewhat more competent team which they are. They're not they're not elite yet but hopefully step in the right direction. That's basically what you said moving upwards. It's a good one. I thought that was stupid. I said rising rising Sun Rewind rewind it my word is rising like Assad Assad just actually A little little news breaking here story going up on the athletic Thursday afternoon here. We just talked about the wolves looking to try and acquire point guard. Intensifying talks according to Shams four Diangelo. Russel Oh oh I mean a lot of people after that team move. You're right thought there's something to be. There's another move here. They're not just doing that. They're not just getting Allen Crab in here Shooting okay ooh that would call for an emergency. podcast log the Ngelo Russell That's pretty cool. It's raining all star. Yeah that's that's pretty close all right. We'll keep an eye on that one. More teams left. Not many. I got the Blazers Blazers with the phrase not just a straight upward. When it rains it pours? Okay a fitting term probably for the not so sunny Portland. They've just been ravaged by injuries. Nerkez yet to play. I mean who knows if he's even coming back and what hell even look like when he does return and they think he well but what will it look like that call okay than we were except for him. He's GonNa get a chance to play three games. He dislocated his left shoulder. rahood had been actually somewhat solar for them. He played half at the half the year so far. Twenty one games in these for the rest. Torn Achilles You know happens. It sucks it's a real. Bummer too because it it feels like it's sort of a wasted Lillard in his prime season. That's the part that really stinks. He's still been really for the most part but the this he's right in the middle of his prime and they're you know they just get killed. The injuries like mellow turns out to be like literally one of their state and he's been all right as a thirty five year old guy who couldn't even get on any other roster for a year and he's asked being asked to play a ton of minutes to be clutch guy. It's just it is what it is. It's a bummer. They might make a second can have pusher. I would not be shocked especially the Lillard as a leader. Maybe they do. I don't see them winning a first round series regardless even with Lillard antics. And what we know we can do in a series like that or anaplastic. But it's a bummer. Is just like they. They've sort of just because of these injuries are sheldon yourself. Yeah exactly right. There have been so many times when and they haven't even really been able to run a center out there and it's like isn't there just Zeller or plumlee. We can give him for tonight. There's got to be a spare went around somewhere. Who can just be tall in the middle of the for but yeah I mean mccollum turned around? He had a slow start to the season. Lillard is obviously producing. Mellow has been fine. But that's not enough to compete. And too bad ED. Because Damian Lillard is getting older and I mean I don't think he's in a hurry to leave I think he's going to be blaze for life but e- would you could lock it in that. He's going to be a glazer for life if he continued to put competitive teams around right. Yeah if you're sort of just a casual fan of the league. You just would see the blazers outside the picture after making a conference finals and say Damian Damian Lillard wouldn't enter your brain really that he is performing to this same level or even a tiny bit a better. He's been great. I mean it's just kind of flying under the radar because the story is that they're bad but it's odd for a conference finals to turn over so much of their roster and then the injuries hit and I think finally finally those two thousand sixteen contracts that they handed out or kind of starting to bite them in the butt with their depth lacking what it is so so They have to turn that around somehow. Maybe it's just let bays more whiteside expire find other ways to use your cap space or maybe it's a trade or maybe it's they are team so they could turn this thing. They have been traditionally historically a team. That's decent in the second half Sacramento Kings. There are a jigsaw puzzle with pieces from other puzzles in that same box. There's too many parts in that box. It start putting the puzzle together and then you get this thing from from another puzzle and it's just you try and jam not GonNa Work Flick. It away They have too many good players for this team to be great and they don't fit all together and it's it's been a strange experiment to see young and old Guys coming in at the end of their careers trying to propel a young team to be a better team but it's they're also taking away minutes from guys who need to evolve evolve like Bugden Bogdonovich and Marvin Bagley and even even their their guards to a to a certain extent and buddy healed and Darren Fox so so it's strange. It's just a strange combination of pieces that they put together. It's obviously not working. And I don't think it's any anything to do with Darrin. Fox who is probably the brightest star. I think he's been working his butt off and he's been playing through injury and he was injured for a good chunk of the season and injuries of hurt them but Yeah Locker has been great. Scott Fall in. Luke Walton to some degree sitting at fifteen in twenty-six not being able to bring those parts together it does and the way they play to the that they played super fast last year and it worked. It was better than this now. They're one of the slowest teams in the League. The twenty eighth and pace they were fifth last year. What's better than this? I mean they they should they should. That's how all these should be playing. I mean yeah okay. Fox wasn't there and he's an instrument part of that but him there the that's exactly how they should play and I do think that falls on a little bit along with the not to get all the pieces fit together there another disappointing team the other team I love. Yeah Love Fox. That's why I'd like to see him. Have a successful specialty similar to the trailblazers. Just a stalled season like they haven't been able to get healed Fox and Bagley on the court together and that's your nucleus. That's the the guys who were successful hustle for you last year. That would theoretically have been the same guys doing it this year. If they're playing fast but they haven't even bamboo together. So bummer for them all right. We got two teams left. The Spurs trae flipflops. Excuse me everything you think he knew about the Spurs. You don't know it anymore. They used to always make the playoffs they might not this year. They used to be really good defense. They're not anymore they used to be. They used to shoot a lot of threes. Now they don't but they're still good on offense the but they're doing it with these outdated dated modes of scoring. They don't shoot a lot of threes but they make him they're letting lamarcus Aldridge has decided. Hey somebody's gotta shoot threes around here. I'm going to do it. So that has been helping ice I S- still hesitate to pick against the spurs not making like how can you do you have any confidence in the teams below them. Compared to the spurs despite the fact that this is not the spurs that we are used to Edita. They're just they're very likely said meat and potatoes and then he didn't really explain explain. Why don't just meat and potatoes? They're they're just meat and potatoes. It's it's like they're playing literally just to keep the streak that what would be what twenty three consecutive playoff appearances. That's what it's that's what it is this and maybe that will be enough to to get in there to keep it alive. You don't WanNa be the team that has it snapped. I'll tell you that right a lot of these these guys were on a lot of those teams anyway that were already in some of the vet. So yeah it's I think it's weird with them is. There was a lot of hype around some of their young guys. Heading heading into the season. And there's been the odd flash of brilliance from from your Murray's and stuff like that and forums like but walker like all these guys everybody got very excited about some of these young guys and maybe they will pan out but then it's just not there consistently a guy who has has been consistent recently Demar Derozan which is yeah. It's odd to see him like really thriving and really being great when you know. We're all sort of ready to be like okay. Damore might fall off a little bit but here in a year number eleven. He's been bombed twenty seven points on sixty five percent shooting over his last twelve games. So Boring podcast Trivia for you he is the just the fourth player over the last twenty seasons to average twenty five on sixty five plus percent shooting over a twelve game span. Who are the other three play over? The last how many seasons went twenty five on sixty five percent durant no shack no kinda surprising. Sixty five percents a huge percentage. So you think you're staying with the big save for a couple of them. Two of the three players are timeframe ever now. Twenty two thousand stretch Lebron ended. Yep Yep okay to in twenty thirteen. He had a good. I remember that goes crazy. Field goal percentage. One Guy has done it a lot and one guy did at once. What's wrong guys don't allow? I'm GonNa this big man twenty-five again bake man said that. Very hesitantly yeah. I didn't think it was going to be and then this guy did it a lot. No I did a lot. Last guy is people compare him to a young young player in the association. Who is nowhere near this guy? This guy not going to get to the hall of fame but injuries set him back Aw brand new quite athletic. Derrick rose no no no no no no neither of those guys very athletic very large man. athletically it on one of the The twentieth or twenty first century's most favorite teams darling teams Shawn Kemp.

"Was something a little bit more of the the dramatic The you know like the sort of the kind of this kind of tabloid sometimes these Philadelphia Seventy sixers Joel embiid. It's it's not fun. It's not fun. I don't think it was supposed to be a team that took another sort of professional staff and it just really hasn't happened even though they got more talented did this year also another word could be ugly. Sometimes the the offense is it just getting each other's way but then it's so weird with them every time my watch them I go. I could see this team going to finals in the east. They are bad match up to some extent for the bucks. I mean they're. They're good man. If I mean for the sixers serves against them I feel it but it's like Tobias. Harris has one awesome game. He's going for thirty and then it's like okay. Two Games later. It's Oh it's it's Richardson. That's his well Simmons for a half of course when embiid's air it's like oh he's a monster but it's very it's like it. Is that weird puzzle thing it's like does this. We'll does this. Damn thing fit together. I mean it looks like it does make sense here sort of but I'm trying to jam this one in here and it's not working. It's tough to figure if it's IT'S GONNA be exacerbated in the playoffs or if it's going to be okay in the playoffs because they've got a very good defense. There are number six and defense right now as expected you know. They've got a lot of size everywhere. Aware and embiid is a huge impact guy. When he's on the court so when the game slows down they're going to be able to play? That's GONNA show up no doubt about it. But how will will they combat the team's attacking them all on the offense event right like embodied. He's not going to be able to get the ball every he's not gonNA. There are games where he's going to be taken out of of it and then it's going to be imperative on Richardson and Harris to show up every single night. And that's a question mark so I don't know. I think that they could make it to the finals. No doubt about it but I wouldn't be happy betting on that's for sure. Yeah what is more likely with the Philadelphia sixers at the halfway point of the season right now. Is it more likely lose a first round series or they go to the finals. I don't know I was just checking the splits against the Orlando Magic. Oh hopefully though it's a weird team and your tabloid is a great one. They're actually because it's it's it's it's fun for us to all play sort of you know armchair chair coach and try and go. Oh maybe your armchair. GM even like trade one of these guys. I don't know if Simmons Abe's going to work or or Horford you gotta move him. I don't know if that's GonNa work with which well embiid there. Those two guys in the middle. It's like everybody's got an answer but I don't know maybe maybe it is enough with what they have we'll see and the other part of it is the the other really strange part of it is their nineteen into at home. That's awesome and seven. Fourteen on the road doesn't speak to a team that gets by on talent and isn't altogether on the same page. I know that's your those are just numbers. But if you're going to get something it's definitely something if you were GonNa say if you if you had to answer that question about making the final sure it's possible but I think the first round upset is wouldn't even be upset because they're in the sixth seat they'd be going on the road somewhere right and that's not going to be easy for them. Yeah and and and one more point to that for you move on here. That whole terrible road record. That is a big differentiating differentiating marker between the really really really good teams and maybe the pretenders right contenders in the pretenders. Because it's it's nuggets like in years past really at home but then they go on the road and you're like they they can't get it done and it's tough to always take those teams struggling the road to go. Oh Yeah I could see them going into somebody's Barn in a playoff series and picking up a big winner to win a series. It's just the way it is. That doesn't I mean there are bad team but you gotta win on the road. The the elite teams do and they're not there right now and that's crazy. They're in the sixth seat. As of today. Wow Wow and I don't I don't see them you know with the Pacers above them in the raptors above them. Those teams aren't GonNa Fault or anytime soon either or the Celtics or the heat. So so if you're a batman sounds like you would put that money on. It's more likely they would lose in the first would be betting on them as a final team has as its riskiest. trae said the odds. Would it'd be a lot juicier. I think to make the finals rather than be a first round loser. Well then and then if the losing a first round I mean what happens. What does Elton Brandon? Sixers front office do things. And then you'd almost have no choice but to make it you've got to go a different direction in training probably one a year. Sort of a leak guys. I would think it's keep them moving here. Toronto Raptors my word for the Toronto Raptors honorable with you because this is a good defending champion for a team that lost their best S. player would have been easy for them to say all right. We're GONNA shift these guys out. We WanNA title. It was awesome. Everybody had a good time but they didn't they never give up. They never give in this despite the the fact that their entire starting lineup from opening night has missed at least ten games each and they're still able to be putting up a twenty six fourteen record fourth in the East right now. They got the number two defense in the league. Everybody they play is good. It's amazing how good basically one through twelve and then there Stanley Johnson the raptors. You gotta you gotta tip too because you know. It's a question now. Should they. Trade Kyle lowry. Should they trademark assault should they trade Serge Ibaka and you know it could have gone the other way. They could have easily been celebrating the championship and say we did it. And that's all it's going to. That is clearly not all it's GonNa be for the Raptors. You can never underestimate the heart of a chance. It's like it's so cliche but it is semi true like like this idea of like they're using that everybody thinking they're gonNa Stink after Colli leaves their use. There's no doubt they're using that as motivation. No we're we're also good we. He helped him get a championship just as much as he helped us. And we're going to try and prove that and you know. Obviously they're well coached. We talked about in comparison to the heat. Yeah it's been a a- actually I think a Lotta Raptors fans despite all the injuries which have been weird Very oddly enjoyable season so far. Just with with all of this sort of this new blood. Be Terri- Davis or Boucher stuff like that playing well. And still racking up the wins and putting up fights even in losses it's been extremely dreamily enjoyable especially to shoot down the the haters and the Naysayers for Toronto Raptors fans people not picking them in their playoffs elections So the right yeah. They're doing extremely well. If they can finish top four which. I don't see why they shouldn't it's a it's a win for for them and I think I think that championship kinship swagger is real. I think it's dripping off. Kyle lowry and Fred van lead. Big Time in their backcourt and Yeah I think the surprise has been there sort of their G. G. League monsters coming off the bench and and and supporting everybody and like even the Norman Powell. It's dripping off of those are the questions. Yeah it's been great. Those are the questions if they can and if Pascal CEAC and can be a superstar in the playoffs if Fred Vanfleet can be a lead guard in the playoffs really you know that. He wasn't last year and then all these bench guys can be real but but wraps fans won't really even care like if they were to lose in the first round four or five series or so. Let me they would. Yeah it's like that would be big time. Found money for them but I think the wraps fans are going to. They're going to be feeling it. They're going to feel like they can win. And that's A. It's a nice feeling final team here in the east Washington Wizards ongoing Taco Bell. No dunks fan. Johnny unknowingly. I sent this in on the last beat. podcast described the wizards Taco Bell. That's what they are. They're all offense no defense. They're great tasting on one end terrible on the other end. boop shoot the wizards won thirteen games with the League's tenth best offense. They play fast. They take care of the ball they they do a fairly average job of hitting shots and getting to the line. Even you got bill scoring twenty eight game. They got eight other wizards like chicken in over ten a game. But it's on on the other end they just don't stop anyone. It's glorified pickup game. The dead last in defensive efficiency it's looks optional. At times if you WANNA play here yeah So yeah there are Taco Bell. Keep that I do like the garrison. Matthews to me sort of turned into the new. Tim Legler got another Legler here with Matthews. But they are. They're a fun watch because it is like watching pickup ball So then they're always one of those weird early starts to and it's at least scoring. Yeah the most likable wizards team in ages. I would say and you know now. We're seeing clips of John Wall in practice while still looks bad practice. Could he return the season. Another shot in the arm for a playoff. Push from the wizards. I don't think so but at least it'll be interesting. Yeah John Wall goes with that Taco bell comparison to in Taco Bell's got to be one of the fastest fast foods coming to you very quickly wrapping those Tortilla. Can't get your wallet in your pocket Hockett before you got to pick up trays already. Being thrown out we'll get you had to reach more has been an incredible story for them too although although he's been injured he's he's part of the superfund club plays hard. He's a I guess he plays too hard to be wanted to be working at Taco bell though he plays plays a little bit on the defensive end. He's the one guy he's the one. I Guess Bong is also plays a little defense. But yeah you got a bunch of water bugs and Ish Smith and Isaiah Thomas and they.

"Th and three point percentage and this is a team that is built built around shooting a lot of threes and making a decent number of them not a bad number of them. So Yeah Kyrie Kerris stay on the court Kevin Durant. You'll be there next year and then and then we'll see what happens and then Kyrie's complaining then. That's a serious problem right task Word Association Charlotte Hornets Charlotte Hornets. I think it's found money because the expectations expectations very very low at this team. I thought I didn't have a lot of expectations Like the nets built around around three point shooting and then a Guy Devante Graham comes along who he played for them last year all of a sudden he turns his four point. Seven points a game in two eighteen point. Seven points per game that came out of nowhere and maybe a few Charlotte fans looked at that bench and said that guy is going to be something next year in his second year. But I I had no idea. And he's taking monster shots monsters three after monstrous three. And if you developed star from within even though he's sort of a an older star is GonNa be twenty five years old soon and you got to be extremely pumped to go along with. Pj Washington as a rook. I think ah where they are right now. Those two young stars I think can call. PG Awash Sur. Sure everybody's a star these days That's found money and that's a great start for the Charlotte Hornets as a baseline at this point. Even though you know they're sitting down at whatever they are fourteen point nine. Fifteen twenty nine That's a good year. It's crazy to say that but finding a guy like tomorrow. DEGROM is a good year for them. And anytime there's an eastern conference team particularly on the eastern seaboard of the country. You gotta be happy that they're watchable. 'CAUSE YOU'RE GONNA tune into a lot of those games just because they're early on the night and like the wizards for a long time. The only team that played at seven o'clock and they were just just dull to watch. At least the Hornets are fun to watch. I got DEVANTE GRANDMA AND PJ Washington pretty high on my list of NBA. Jam Does that I play. They came out with a twenty twenty game. Pj Washington I think is going to be a really good player for the rest of his career. He can shoot threes. He can post up. That's what you need to do if you're going to be playing in the pick and roll as a big four man. Yeah even though expectations were low. It's still disappointing. A fifteen to twenty nine record. But they're lumped with a lot of those teams in the east that are in exact same boat be- at the Pistons or the balls. Also you know the nets nets not that much better than them but It's just they're just all their you know not playing up to their capabilities or at least maybe some of the expectations expectations. We had coming in. But you're right I mean even Terry Rozier who you know we knock the deal that he got the money that they threw them at the point. Guard position He's played yeah well he actually has again. Not a ton of people are watching Hornets Games night in night out but him and Graham and then like you said watchable they are they are and he's even I. I'm not a huge zero zero fan house. Sure had the Bible or Reggie Jackson like deal to me. But he's been good he has. I have to admit that he's turned her A. You'd think thank after. He backed up Kyrie Irving wanted his own starring role going to Charlotte. He may be a little upset. That Davonte Graham came and joined him in the starting lineup but he's handled like a champ and miles bridges as well. You said that it's disappointing for them. In two thousand nine. It's just that's a that's a really bad record. It also. Coming into the season people would pick the Hornets as the worst team in the league. They were in the next for one of the worst teams in the League has not had any idea who devante grandma's yeah doesn't he's on the map now all right next one trae. Wow it was meant to be you. Got The Chicago Bulls Go. Boston can through a lot of words. Disappointing blown a a lot of fourth. Quarter leads infuriating. Also blonde fourth quarter leads hampered by their coach lurking in the playoff picture but ultimately I think the word is inconclusive. Because now now I look at every bulls player and I have no idea if they're actually any good. Jim Boylan is a terrible head coach. He is gonNA survive the season but he has the players in in positions. That don't make sense so now you look at the two guys who were potential first-time all-stars coming into the season. Zach Levine Lauri Markkanen. Are they any good. Could they play for a a winning team. I don't know at this point. The only guys I feel comfortable saying are going to be winning basketball. Players are window Carter and maybe Kobe white other than that. It's just really hard to say. Lauri Markkanen is having his worst season of his career scoring less than he scored as a rookie shooting worse the big not to have a decent December. He's just so up up and down up and down and that's just how it is with the balls. They can't seem to figure out how to put a team away. When it comes the fourth quarter which is the mark of a young team but this this is not that young of a team anymore? Yeah and then classic auto porter injured. I was very excited for the Bulls. Look coming into the season you and I were talking about the Bulls we loved. I like to. We saw like boiling for coach of the year. But it's like because I was excited about Saturday thaddeus young being added team I was especially thinking Larry Marketing. It would go to the next level. You Know Zach Levine could be all-star waiting and he's played great. He really has. He's he's in. The three with unbelievable consists the window. Carter I was excited Kobe. But it's just like yeah. It's like they get leads and they can't take care of them. They have lost a ton of games where they were leading in the fourth quarter and could have a very you know very very decent record. Had they pulled out half of those and then you look at the defense are like Whoa. You're eleventh you've been top ten for most of the season forcing turnovers in the league. But that's because the Bulls play other bad teams half the time. The bad teams can't handle it when the Bulls are pressing and trapping the pick and roll. They make bad passes just like the Bulls do on offense but then you play against the team. That's in the upper half of the league. They know all we have to do is make passes and we're getting one of the most efficient shots in basketball a wide open corner three or a dunk at the rim. As what it feels like the Bulls can beat up on the bad teams in sort of or can at least hold their own against bad teams and then it gets the good teams. It's a disaster. You always are joking that the Bulls are going to make the playoffs playoffs. Do you really truly believe they will. Do you really do those. Four Games out man. So you think I guess. In theory there are going to be a better second team than the nets while the voting as we've we've seen out. Hey maybe maybe I think the nine through fifteen. They can still make the playoffs in these regards. I think it's starting it's starting in a separate. It's it's weird to say that the Eastern Conference play a picture might be starting to get set but I think everybody. I think everybody Bulls Pistons Wizards Necks Hawks. Not Everybody. Because I've got the Cleveland Cavaliers. Here they are not making the playoffs. I'll whatever you want but my one my one word or my my phrase I mean I'll keep it simple I'll just go slug. Life should be lying there at look really it's in shambles. This has been a disaster of a season. The twenty nine hundred twenty calves here. It's it's wild to think they started four and five. Oh yeah they beat the Pacers in their second game. The cavs did they beat the Bulls. They beat the wizards. They beat the Knicks early. There were four or five scrappy. Little Bunch here and you you know it's it's gone els. Then Kevin love interest in Thompson. We're just waiting for them. To get traded one. Both of them may be. Am you see and really what they could get in return. I will say calling sexton and Darius Garlan have slowly started to improve a little bit over the last couple of weeks the sex land back court slowly slowly but really will be lined be there to start next season something. We debated after those after the thug slash lashawn comments that he made in a practice session. I who knows the sixty six year old man the guy that's GonNa lead them back into the playoffs us and have some success for the first time and send some ageism. Yeah baby there was maybe there. Well it's it's I get what they were trying to do. They're like well. We're basically clear college team with some guys. So maybe a college coach is best suited to You know build them up but then the problem was the whole time was well. No they have these. He's vets I mean there are these loves and there's Tristan Thompsons and there was the JR Smith and it's like what are we doing here. What's the game plan? Our some guys being told. Oh we're going to go for the Peter. Some saint like no no. It's all about building for the future and he's not maximizing those young players. He's not getting. He's not coaching them in a way where they are playing like a college team. I mean they're they're playing a lot isobel right right. That's not. That's not conducive to getting along with the Veterans Number One. It's not conducive to winning games and it's It's so heavy you know it's like it's I. I watched on Saxon. It's Kinda like watching. Zach Levine in a weird way like they just WanNa make it happen themselves and numbers are put on the board But the offense is terrible overall and You know trae young in that category too. There's there's unfortunately there's not executing all the world trade got an excuse But the calves really don't Because they have a guy who's made a billion all star teams in Kevin Love. They have talented garlanded guys. That should be winning more basketball games. I think with better coaching. At least they have a guy named Dean weighed. At least. That's the one call all part of the cavs season again. You're just hoping some of these guys get treated. I hope not Tristan Thompson. Though I don't think I I think it should be a CAV for life..

"Same teams are gonna be trying to get to the playoff yet again this year so i'm not expecting a lot of surprises this year so i'm going chaki at the way i described this upcoming season. How about this. It starts august twenty four th and this is a long the long season but it'll be fun. There's no such thing as too much college football all right me interesting to see if it's in terms of the heisman usually it's a quarterback award andre you would know that how about a non quarterback heisman winner is give me a word andrei jonathan taylor wisconsin running bag still on the offensive side though but <hes> you've talked about a guy that went over two thousand yards as a freshman last year right at night over nine thousand nine hundred yards. He's got three offensive. Lima returned into wisconsin. They're gonna obviously feature jonathan taylor. He could have one heck of a year and then finish the season with the heisman trophy. It'd be welcomed because don't get me wrong quarterback difficult position to play get all the credit get all the blame. I think that quarterback is definitely the toughest office position to play. But what point are we going to open up. The heisman consideration defensive players running backs are obvious they still get they still get consideration but defensive offensive guys several years in the last five or six years. We've seen capable defensive players that have been invited to new york williams last year at alabama. Tell me he wasn't one of the most dominant players in college football. He absolutely was so. I would love to see something mixed up when it comes to the heisman trophy and to see some defensive love that that those guys get at the end of the season dan. I think the only way it happens is if you shrink the voter pool from like a billion like fifteen. It'll have like a committee yeah yeah we have. We had some non quarterbacks when it in nineteen ninety s all right finally michigan state unveiling its alternate it uniforms the reviews weren't great hit a little lime green and andrei these alternate uniforms are give me a word for these man this ugly something i designed my garage myself and put it together a little needles and thread a couple of numbers. I put this together this. That's that's ugly. I'm going distorted. Those jerseys looked like they were. We're about this big and then you put them on someone. That's the size of a college football player so they expanded therefore the word state got enormous and the number got enormous. It just looks odd so distorted is how i would describe that unique color combination. Don't get away from your true. Greens are unbelievable. I'm disappointed by the uniforms those <hes> those uniforms were built for the nearsighted so there's maybe a small part of the population that will that will like those we'll see when.

"All of football the resources where where they are geographically <hes> the the recruiting bed that they can they can reach north south east and west and yet every year we have to say is texas xs bet they're underachieving if they are the mecca of college football. How can you possibly justify just one national championship championship since one thousand nine hundred seventy fifty years guys and by the way they need to just think about owning their own rivalry oklahoma for instance in that same time time frame four national championships so if they're the mecca of college football. They got some serious work to do when it comes to bring home a national championship. I unfortunately too got a little too literally big. It's a huge state takes two days to drive for that. Let's go to u._s._c. now. They hire graham harrell as the offensive coordinator andrei underrated moved to the air raid u._s._c. Adopting the air raid is what i guess desperate when you go oh five and seven and your jobs on the line and you clay held and you're going to try just about anything you can to win. Football games you've recruited to a certain system is to each and every year for the last four years. It's supposed to be quarterback you <hes> they might like it. The quarterbacks for certain we'll like a great it's mind blowing to me to think that the that i grew up with and early two thousand carson and liner reggie and all these incredible players. They were a pro style multiple style off with a quarterback under center n._f._l. Running back long wide receivers on the outside multiple tight ends on the field depending on what the down and distance was just like the fact that they have adopted. The system of today is insane to me so i'll be curious to see how it works out. Clearly is a a <hes> a desperation move for clay. They help make sure that they get this thing back on track finished ninth in the pac twelve and scoring offense so you got to do something and they are certainly doing something right speaking of adopting texas this a._m. The unity council has adopted a policy that the team will stay off of all social media for the duration of fall camp yep andrei no social media for the rest of all cap. That is what give me a word smart. I love it. I absolutely love it because because there's going to see is going to force guys to focus on the job at hand out working through camp. You're not there no distractions whatsoever you just you're just focusing on football and learning the offense and defense and then putting everything you have into what needs to be accomplished for the twenty nine thousand nine uh-huh no social media t the twenty two the only thing i've ever known as social media can't pick up the phone and talk to one of my friends or one of my teammates at the tweet at emerson a direct message. There's no way that this is going to be something that these guys can wrap their head around then again. It is smart and i appreciate it knowing that a that they have an expectation of what they're trying to focus in on during the fall camp but my reaction initially of jimbo fisher were to present if i may ten point to how do we talk to people people how do i what does this interacting you speak of by the way clemson also off limits for the entire season and it seems to worked for them last <hes> eight or so years. They've been doing that for the last three national championship all right next one. This is the one hundred fiftieth season of college football andre the one hundred under fiftieth season of of be is what give me a word rippling writing it now as we speak exciting about that exciting exciting a lot of excitement in this season in college football two hundred fiftieth year. I think there's gonna be a lotta great football. <hes> football games played this year and a lot of tradition built on. What's already been established this. This'll be fun year to to kinda see what's in store exciting. It always is going chaki interpreted as all right. What's this season look like. Are they going to be some surprises. I don't see any guys. I it feels like the usual. Usual suspects are going to be in the running for another national championship..

"On his game. Dabo sweeney has an exit interview with every player kinda gives them their orders moving forward through the spring and summer and some some of the things that trevor was working on footwork. He wants to be able to extend plays longer and better for this clemson offense and said you know i want to work on some of my mechanics. He was dropping his arm a little little bit too much late in the season so a lot of things that he's trying to build on for that sophomore season. He's got so much work with here that position. It's pretty <hes> pretty amazing. They get them for two more years hard to fathom how good he will be at the end of his junior campaign ladies. Thank you so much and we'll be looking forward to more more from you. As your trip continues here on this college football tour coming up on wednesday they'll be at another college football playoff team oklahoma check it on jalen hurts and company before heading to the other side of the red river with visit to texas on thursday. Let's welcome back in <hes> greg and andre let's shift back into the clemson tigers the reigning national champs guys when you take a look at their schedule according to the preseason coaches poll who knows how different the a._p. Will be <hes>. There's only two ranked ranked teams that they're gonna have their schedules texas ada evans syracuse. They're going to be heavy favorites throughout given that fact greg will start with you can clemson afford four to lose a game with the schedule and still make the plough it depends on the optics of the loss naturally so if they go out and play like ohio state did against purdue last year and lose by five touchdowns or like ohio state did a couple of years ago and lose by thirty plus to iowa then yeah. That's going to be a really difficult loss to overcome but i also thanks to look. The committee says every single time they put out a ranking. It's a snapshot of what they've seen in college football that season. They're human guys at some point. They have to kinda think about historically just how good clemson's been when put in a playoff scenario so i think just knowing that clemson clemson has been there done that and been successful in the playoffs. I think they would get the benefit of the doubt. If in fact they were to drop the only reason andre where i could see clemson not getting into the playoff is it there were four undefeated power five conference champions and i don't think any of us that i agree with you so in a sense but i i think the earlier the better so they can lose. Yes would be the answer but it's earlier in the schedule when they can lose so you can show <hes> the country and the committee that you bounced back. Maybe there was a player that was was hurt that week and you bounce back and you get to show the remainder of the season. What kind of team you really are as you progress through the season whether it's the a._m. Week or the syracuse week that follows really when you look at the schedule realistically mystically. I don't think there's much to it other than those two games <hes> there's some teams n._c. State has played them tough the last couple of years but <hes> aside from texas saying emma syracuse early clinton seems to have a path of smooth sailing so to speak that'd be interesting to see if they had a loss if they were compared to another one loss team that had a tougher schedule because we've seen it's just number of losses not necessarily strength the schedule. It's gotten you into the playoff college football teams taking the field to begin camp as our high school..

"Are interrelated with their psychology and how this may be a form of an adjustment or a form of reconciling some something that was not fully developed or not fully addressed growing up and doesn't doesn't really. Take this doctor to notice that being alone is is his issues is really his problem. Yeah, I can only imagine what that would be like having the powers that Jamie has, where you're terrified of being alone, and you have a way to a very literal sense. Never be alone. That just makes you feel more alone. Yeah. You mentioned Jamie. His powers relating to psychology and something we've seen a little bit of here. One of his duplicates was the first major villain in x factor. And we think one time before seeing one of them sort of break off and go off on its own and not really want to go back to Jamie in in the fallen angels miniseries, but that's going to become more and more of an issue as time goes on an eventually. We're going to see duplicates who are more and more differentiated as differ as reflecting different moods or different aspects of personality. Yeah, Matthew Rosenberg's current, multiple man series actually explores that very heavily and I think very entertainingly ineffectively. So does that make him more fragmented and and less you know that that would make me think that all these versions that have are like just a sliver of his personality still do not make a whole person that does that make sense? Yeah, I think so. And I think that's some. That's something that when James written especially well, the is focused on a lot by those writers like. He's a guy who can go do everything simultaneously. He can explore every possible way of being a person. But I think because of that, he's like you said, scattered like him figuring out who he is on a fundamental level. That seems to really be a challenge for him when he's a guy who is in a prime situation to really externalize. A lot of who he is into think of parts of his experiences in parts of his feelings and parts of his personality as literally other people sort of a modular identity kinda. But one of the things I like is when he talks also about himself being a prankster because we saw that with Guido is well. He also seems to have a little bit of self awareness as to why he does that because it reminds me I'm alive. It gets people to notice me. And when people notice me. Helps make sure that I'm not alone. And you poke statement with, of course, creating duplicate of himself and that just makes so much sense that that attention seeking behavior like that's how you get people around you. If you don't really care whether it's positive or negative attention than, hey easy, and he's very good at that. What do you make of the association. Exam. Oh, the word association? Yes, hard to say because like it seems like he's maybe being flippant or maybe that is the way his brain works. Like having doc, Samson say black and him just say Motown and having say alone him, say, hell. Like which of those Jamie real reflexive responses in which you're him. Just trying to get a rise out of the dude. I don't get the sense that any of those responses are any of his any of his cells. So then that he is basically just trying to provoke a reaction that he's trying to keep the focus of what should be based on him based on the other person. Right. Like they seem to be your deflections or or distractions in. I'm not sure. And this is this is really a problem with word association techniques. I don't know that a lot, a lot of more modern psychologists use this approach because we know that there's not a lot of evidence to show that that really gives us valid information about somebody's personality or their potential behavioral patterns that someone can respond in any way. And even if they did respond by. Using words that describe what images come to their mind. Does that really tell us a lot anyway? Yeah. Doc, Samson's techniques seem to be kind of all over the place like logically in terms of, you know, both like validity and also just him having apparently, you know, a different type of technique for every single moment with every single character like he doesn't to specialize ninety direction..

Ebola outbreak in large city 'very concerning'
"Horsely. Okay. Millions millions of people are expected to tune into the Royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in England tomorrow. All right. So who's getting married Prince? Harry is sixth in line to the British throne, and he has really come a long way when he was just a kid, he lost his mother Princess, Diana in a car accident as a young man, he loved to party sometimes embarrassing the royals. Harry is now thirty three years old. And by all accounts, he's grown up. He served as a soldier in Afghanistan. He has been promoting the cause of mental health. His bride is rather unconventional by British Royal standards. Markle thirty six years old is an American actress who is by racial and this will be her second marriage. NPR's Frank Langfitt normally covers small stories, like I don't know China or Brexit, but he's been promoted this week to be NPR's royals correspondent and he'll be covering everything about this Royal wedding. Hey, there, Frank, Hagen moist. Where are you? I'm at Windsor Castle, and it's a beautiful two magnificent day. It's just outside of London. It's the queen's weekend home, and I'm sitting along the long walk. Now this is the road that leads up to the castle and the carriage with Harry and Meghan is gonna pass by here tomorrow and kind of I think the big image you're going to see on television is the carriage going up the hill towards the castle in the background, they're going to be tens of thousands of cheering fans. It's going to be. It's gonna be quite a picture. So so franker you there because you have to get there twenty four hours in advance to claim your seat on the lawn. Excellent question. It's actually a great time for people to get here. It's pretty wide open except I have been talking to Royal super fans who've been out here for four days sleeping, right at certain corners so they can get view of the carriage while. And so there are people who are just absolutely loved the Royal family, and they come out for this in terms of how the rest of Britain feels. I think is pretty mixed. We not having as many block parties as we had for William's marriage back in two thousand and. Seven and of course, you know, Harry is not going to be kings, so it's not as big a deal. Also, there's some people, of course are critics. This is going to cost tens of millions of dollars, probably mostly for security, and some people still question whether the United Kingdom taxpayers should be spending so much on these sorts of events. Isn't there a sign of change in this Royal wedding, Frank? Because of whom Prince Harry is Marianne. It's a really different choice. And I think this is a more interesting story. She's an actress, she's from LA. She's by racial and divorced, and it's when you talk to people around London and Greater London. They talk about this speaking to a growing diversity in the UK, especially in a place like London that's so multicultural. And also the Royal family begin to a little bit more like the people that they represent catching up. Some people saying, you know, beginning to catch up to society. So yeah, there's there's definitely a sense, and I think that's one of the key points of interest. Well, let's just underline that for a moment because I mentioned Brexit before that was seen in some ways, a. Reaction against immigrants against too much diversity isn't Britain already a fairly diverse place. It's actually it's actually not. It's fascinating. It's I think, close to eighty seven percent white. So it's very different than the United States. London is much more like Manhattan. It's incredibly global, but the rest England you. I mean, even where I live, it's mostly white folks. I don't see people of color out there that much. Okay. Different sort of Royal wedding, Frank. Thanks very much. Appreciate it. Happy to do it. Steve NPR's royals correspondent Frank, Langfitt. Some other news. Now, the World Health Organization says any bowl outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has reached a new and more worrying phase. Yep. Patient with Ebola turned up in a large port city on the Congo river, nearly a hundred miles from the epicenter of the outbreak. So what had appeared to be a small, relatively confined outbreak of Ebola in the country. Suddenly looks more serious NPR's Jason vogue and has been watching this story either Jason, hey, good morning. How big a deal is this? It definitely is concerning because now we have what public health officials calling urban Ebola this potential for transmission to be happening in the crowded city and the ideas that that transmission could be exponential instead of sort of the slow plotting linear transmission that usually get in these rural areas in the Congo that have always been contained quite easily in the past. But still we'd say it still just one. Confirmed case in this river port city. Although you are reminding me of two thousand fourteen when there was an outbreak of A Bola in west Africa, and I suppose we should mention when you get into a city, most of the cities, the world are connected and people start worrying about where where does these might go next? Absolutely. And that is the big question. You know, it's very early here, but there could be a lot of cases that are still out there in this city that haven't been detected or it could be that, you know, it's just this one that the, you know, the west Africa outbreak. In the end, you ended up with twenty eight thousand people getting sick. Eleven thousand of them died. There's there's a lot of concern that this one case in the river port could be sort of the kernel that could start another huge one, another huge outbreak. You know, the capital can Shasha is just a few hundred miles down the river that same river kind of leans up to the Central African Republic. So a bull spreading along the Congo river really is sort of a nightmare scenario. Okay. So when I think of Democratic Republic of Congo. I mean, if you just try to do word associations, you think civil war, you think misgovernment you think poverty can health officials there do much or they organized well enough to stop this outbreak. You obviously, this is an incredibly challenging place to to deal with an outbreak like this, which does not have the healthcare system that would be able to do that they're having to fly in even the protective gear to treat these patients you. You've got the World Health Organization flying people in even the UN's World. Food Program has been sort of roped into setup. This helicopter bridge where they're flying things into the actual epicenter, their new little transmission. You know the, the personal protective equipment, these 'isolation wards all things like that need to get flown in and it's a, it's absolutely a huge challenge in this type of an environment in few seconds. Is there one lesson from two thousand fourteen that applies here? Absolutely. It's move fast and that. Is happening. It's only been since may as that this was declared and they're getting their quick and trying to get these cases under control and get them contain Jason. Glad you're on top of this. Thanks very much. You're welcome. That's NPR's Jason. Bogan.
