"So when my son came home from school after robotics club, I asked him to show me how it works. It's actually ridiculously easy. First though, I had to create an account after my initial freak out about them wanting my phone number and email address and realizing that trying to guard my privacy at this point is a joke. I went ahead and made my account. Then I started to play. All I had to do was give it a prompt and within milliseconds it complied. I first started easy with a prompt, I would never give, because it is so problematic. And super easy to already get examples in other essays online about it. So here's what I prompted right about the major themes in the great gadsby. Faster than you can say, sparks note grade saver. It spit out a very clean and dry first couple of paragraphs that sounded like many essays I've already read before. It introduced the book, had a kind of a thesis statement at the end of the first paragraph and so forth. It actually was kind of impressive. I didn't ask for an essay, so it really was just a couple of paragraphs. So the next thing I asked it was only slightly more challenging, prompt I gave was the theme of isolation in Frankenstein with quotes. It spit out a few good quotes actually with quite astute analysis about them. I'm kind of amazed. If students didn't want to bother actually finding quotes and analyzing them, they could just plug these right in. I decided to kind of up the stakes and get really serious. In one of my English classes called word versus image, where we compared the iconic piece of literature to the iconic film of the same name, like the aforementioned Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, and the 1939 film version that really had very little connection. The only exception to the same name rule was the novel Emma, and the film clueless, because I knew my students love that movie and had no idea what it was based on. Also, I loved that movie and Jane Austen's book. So we did an activity where they got into pairs and compared Emma to Mary wollstonecraft's a vindication of the rights of women, which was published almost 25 years before Emma was published. We had a great class discussion about it, and then they had to write a manifesto that share from clueless and Emma from Emma might have written. So I thought I would give that same writing prompt to the AI. So first I asked it to compare Jane Austen's Emma to woolston craft's manifesto. And actually it was good. It was dry, very dry. But basically really good. Then I asked it to do just one part of my assignment, and I put it this way. Write a manifesto like a vindication for the rights of women as if share from clueless wrote it. And this is what it said. A vindication of the rights of women by Cher Horowitz. Okay, so far so good, I guess. I was really excited to see what it would come up with because my students did a brilliant job. Here's how it went. One we the women of the world have been oppressed by a system that has been designed to keep us in a subordinate position, no longer will we be denied our right to self determination to education to economic freedom and to the pursuit of our own dreams and ambitions. We demand that women be given equal opportunities as men in the workplace and in education we will no longer accept the idea that men have more rights than women, we will not be relegated to traditional roles, but we will instead be given the chance to pursue our own interests and passions.

Yeah, I mean, it's a brilliant thing I agree and it's also a terrible thing I completely agree. People are afraid of criticism, their fear of embarrassment, they're afraid of judgment, all of these things. But it's one of those things that I think social media is decaying our ability to have confidence. I think that if we can be forward sighted and see that our reliance on technology is increasing, we can do it not only for ourselves, but for other people around us. I mean, anyone that's got kids at the moment would probably see that they spend so much time behind a screen. And then we had the pandemic and we had all of these things. And I don't think that will work because for various reasons that for old people died. And get the bus. And they're not full of people because a lot of people don't use retired people don't use it. And also the service, I think the service needs to be improved rather than free transport have a cheap across the town. And for example, tries to get a bus and for home and four buses will cancel when I walk down this is at 5 o'clock in the afternoon. So I think it needs to be looked at as a feature fixing public transport. Well, we'll win half price fears came in that they actually proved to be successful. And coincided with petrol being higher than it is now. And I don't know whether it's free transport includes the theories because if it doesn't, it will be a pretty penalized, very users from the shore. Yeah, you just want to be encouraging across the board in every way you can. And thanks for your thoughts, John. And I hope that we can do that. "It happened. But to be able to share that story publicly and yet given the first opportunity to do so, you didn't bet an island and you got up there and you did it. Now I love that you said that it felt bloody good because I would imagine that part of you might have been worried as to if it wasn't so good. You know what must have any of you any part of you feel scared about what people might think or sharing that? No, I think I'm still I think I was still pretty much in a state of shock for months. Okay. So I was kind of in that plane. Different, almost a different awareness. But no, that didn't cross my mind and I got so much positivity because other women would come to me in secret. Right, yeah. I've heard so many stories over the years and I still have women come to me and I'm very grateful for that. Isn't that interesting that you're grateful for being able to be able to trust you? Yeah. Who had so much trouble trusting others? Yeah, it's often the way isn't it. So Brenda, you know, once you shared that story and you had other people come and confide in you and essentially it's like you gave them permission to be able to tell their story. We made them feel that they had permission to tell their story because they knew that you would understand. What other parts of your life started changing from there because I'm interested in how this allowed you to deal with the trauma. Well, of course, crisis we know which right crisis I did all the phone work and I met lots of other women and I used to go and see them and we shared their stories. It was kind of like a support group. I wasn't just we were together. There was a connection and they taught me so much. I learned so much, particularly one that I dedicated my book to. She's dead now, but Sheila had been in an orphanage and Wales, she was taken off her family when she was a little girl, so it was very bad. And that woman taught me so much. And they all taught me and what I began to understand, I started to see patterns and their behavior. And when I did 57 ACC claims and I started to see, and it's what I feel quite passionate about is that there's an aftermath in this connections and we develop survival systems and we often Flank school, you know, the ones that have been sexually abused from the young suddenly stop functioning at school because doing these claims I got these stories and some of the stories would say, oh my God, I've been through that. And that was when the pack grave actually eventually cracked me open and brought up all the other rape side been through and abuses. Which I had buried. In the me too movement, I was like the me too. So it all came to the surface. So how did that affect you when it came to the surface? What did that look like in reality? In reality, I was very unstable. And I suffered a lot from ease of being angry or depressed and sometimes I was in the middle. Occasionally I'd be balanced. And I took to gardening, and this is one of the things I understand that I don't think the western medical model understands. And I learned this from a Maori woman and a woman who read about the witches, we all have life force you know how Marty go stones and rivers and we all have life force. So when you're raped, different from being run over by a bus. Or being beaten up. It touches something deep inside yourself because women use words like attached my spirit. It touched my soul. And I now am a martial artist. We talk about the key in a gene that all comes from your center. So it's your center. You get invaded in a sexual way. Which is the I think a Maori woman used the term they call it the home of the people. And when I heard that about the pelvic area I went click I began to realize and I think I didn't fully understand, but I think that's what blocks healing sometimes is that we don't understand as western people that we need to feed our life force. So gardening and being in nature and being at the sea in sitting with trees and birds feed my life force, it still does. So that's what I do now. I garden. Gardening, yes, and I completely understand. Rotation. Talk to me about the connection between the anger because to be fear you had every right to be angry. I'm angry. Hearing this story, you know, I'm sitting here I'm angry. I was justified I could just find my anger. And then I got tasting through the family court. With the children and that made me even more angry. Yeah, but anger doesn't go anywhere except it dump it on other people, I mean my children have been infected by my moods. I know that now and I'm beginning to kind of, I mean, a functioned, I thought I was okay. I kind of functioned okay. And as I did my woman's studies degree in discovered feminism, and did the 5, you know, went, oh my God. And then colonisation. Oh my God. So I started to piece, I became quite political too. I started to piece the politics of everything together. But anger is destructive. I mean, I didn't beat up. I had a partner with a rolled up listener once. I didn't really have the physical thing like men often have. But I had the verbal. And I slammed doors, and I threw dishes. And generally, I just get out of the house and scream, I'd go out at the top of my Helen I'd scream. And in a sort of get yourself, you know, come back together. And then I'd flip into generally go into deep, I spent probably 30 years going in and out of depression. Quite seriously, and a lot of thinking of, you know, good, you know, I had all that stuff. The self critic was going crazy. Absolutely. And might as well go and kill yourself. And you know, but it's your children anyway. All that kind of stuff. But you held on to hope. I did when my children kept me going. I didn't want to I want to feel tearful. I wanted to be the best I could for them, but I wasn't. But they were all out here. I didn't have. Family around me. I have a DNA listening tonight. Because I was always weird one, even before it happened. I was the weird one in my family, and especially when I became a vegetarian 55 years ago. I mean, things like that. But Brenda, you'd never stop trying. That's what I can hear in your story. And I had a dog, and this is another part of my healing. Started writing because I've written a book when I'm started writing the stories about how dogs were really important and I had the dog. And sometimes her energy would help would get me up. I always got up in the morning to feed the kids. I didn't sleep very well. I always got up because I knew that if I stayed in bed that would be disaster. I knew that I couldn't stay in bed, I would never get up. So my dog made me walk. And my dog would lie beside me, and she knew I needed it. Unconditional love. Absolutely. She was amazing. She was good for the whole family. We always had animals, but that particular one, she was, she was just amazing. We got to take a break when we come back. I really want to talk about how you really address that anger. Okay, I get because I think that is probably a really key part of your story. And one which I think, you know, you listeners will definitely be interested in. So how do you control anger when you've been treated as badly as Brenda ahead? We'll find out after the break. My name's Hamish Williams and Carl McDonald psychotherapist here in the here in the studio. He's been very quiet, actually. But I've been wrecked. With a story. Bring that is a very, very good storyteller that is to be sure. And let's say that you can hear the Shane. So bring it look, but we were talking about your anger and I think now that we can we can understand where it's coming from I think anybody in their right mind would feel that you'd be justified to be angry. But anger doesn't always serve us particularly well, does it Kyle? No, it doesn't. And I think one of the ways I sort of think about it like a wound, right? I mean, it festers. And I think healing can involving can involve the expression of anger. It can find ways to channel that anger and anger has a tremendous life force to it. But I think it can also be tremendously distracted. And one of the ways it's destructive is if we hold on to it. As a way to feel or try to feel powerful or strong, I think that that can over time sort of fester and to resentment. In a way that's ultimately toxic for us. Because there's a limit to how far in it can take us before we actually also have to go to the other hard place as a sadness and grief and loss. So Brenda, how did you address your anger? What was it that when did you decide? I probably need to do something about this. I mean, it was early on in my journey. I thought I've got to do something about it. So you probably laugh at this one. So I went to Ben for nonviolence. To get some information. It wasn't it helpful, because they talked about managing your anger and I thought, mmm. I didn't quite get that concept. Anyway, but then I found the book. I read a lot as you've probably gathered and it was written by a woman called Diane Marie child, and she said anger is your friend. Anger is a warning sign that something's out of balance. Angers the fire energy that turns the pot into the clay into a pot. But it needs an anger that chapter said anger, transforming anger as fears, transforming, you've got to transform the anger. Rather than manage it and control it, that struck a chord with me. And then it was 8 years, I was 42, so what was I 33 when I got pet rape? 42 when I started my martial art training. And I went to the martial art because self defense wasn't going to be enough and I was so angry that I wanted to be able to kill someone. If they should ever try anything again. And so I fortunately chose Aikido. And if anybody knows Aikido the Japanese men who found Aikido, he had done a lot of martial arts and he felt it was given to him he was a Shinto Buddhist and it's called the way a piece and I kind of thought it might get me there because I was saying I didn't want to be angry and I wasn't really an angry person. I knew I wasn't an angry person. But I was able to know alien noting myself from the world people were frightened of me. I just let fly, you know, as someone stole my car park. And it was a big guy or something. I'd get out and say, hey, if at you, use me and think your own world, you just stole it, you know, I was awful. I just. And I was the angry woman I even knew. For a while, so I started the martial art. And that started slowly, it takes time, but also I had read enough to know that under the anger was the sadness and the grief. And I did start going to a few sort of personal growth workshops and things like that that didn't some of them help some of them didn't. I'm just imagining you as the student being really impatient being like, yeah, when do I get to the book where I learn how to kill? It was kind of different because this is when did I join 32 years ago I started training and it was very male. And I was short. Nobody wanted to practice with me and I'd have to get, you know? I got a bit of bullshit. And there was occasional men that were trying to hurt me or something. I was like, oh my train with you again. You know, I was a woman. A little woman and how dare I come to a martial art? Are you stuck with it? I stuck with it because I thought, do you know how stuck was it? I thought you guys. You didn't face weapons. You didn't face being raped by a gang of men you do not know anything. In this room. Yeah, I did it. Myself, you know, nothing about what can happen. You meet you know nothing. You just wearing your white coats and you think. So now I think or two. Did the anger dissipate? It did. How long did it take? Well, what happened? Gosh, I should ask, you should ask my children probably. How long did it really take? For you though, when did you start to feel that change? Yeah, I can. It's 20 years after the pick rape. I went to see a priest, I was very suicidal. I had had my 8 year relationship left me for a younger woman. And I just thought I've done so much gross, I'm so much better, so things are smooth the birch. We're going to take a break here, but we'll come back and continue to talk with surrender at the next hour. What invite your calls to at this point though, everyone?
