I bet you thought he played longer didn't ya? He didn't on this day in nineteen fifty five US president Dwight D Eisenhower suffered a heart attack while on vacation in Denver, Colorado. Stoorikhel event question Mark on this day in nineteen fifty seven the Brooklyn Dodgers paid their last game at Ebbets field in Brooklyn. They would soon become the LA dodgers question. Mark sack face on this day in nineteen fifty seven US President Eisenhower sent federal troops Little Rock Arkansas to enforce school integration. Oh, man. That was exhausting. Wasn't it? It was for me. I'm sure it was for you too. So that's all the housekeeping. I can think of right now if I forgotten anything, nobody casts, nobody Cass. Nobody Cass good tonight. We actually had a very special guest coming into the studio tonight is Tony nominated actor and movie and television star Billy Magnusson. He was in into the woods bridge of spies game night. I had not seen game night until two nights ago. I just listened to it while getting ready for this here interview with Billy and night to say that movie is hilarious, and Billy is hilarious in it. So he's going to be joining us pretty soon. That's exciting. That's very exciting before really gets here, though, we should and will talk about a few things that are going on in the news and going on, of course in the world. There's really not too much. I wanna talk about to be perfectly honest because I'm tired of talking about it. I'm tired of talking about Donald Trump. I'm tired of talking about things that don't just make it go. But make you go. Oh god. Oh god. You're listening to the next best thing. Here's what's making news tonight. All right. Are you probably heard that deputy attorney general rod Rosenstein is either going to be fired or resign. The New York Times recently reported from what I'm told incorrectly. They reported that rod Rosenstein had suggested wearing a wire and going in to get Donald Trump on tape saying and being crazy saying crazy things and suggesting crazy things so that he could then invoke the twenty fifth amendment and have him thrown out on his big fat ass. Well, it turns out that was not what he was really doing. See? Here's the thing. I'm so stunned by this. Because the New York Times is a paper that we all trust a lot of people rely on and that gets their ass kicked by Donald Trump for being fake and wrong. Will they didn't have a source who is in that? Room that apparently they're sourcing here was pretty questionable, and they made this report which ultimately serves as amunition for Donald Trump to fire rod Rosenstein, who is in charge of the Robert Muller investigation. So if and when that happens, I don't know what's going to happen. It's very. I can't believe that the times made that report because for as diligent spec them in. I think they are on all the reports about Robert Muller and about Michael Cohen, and stormy Daniels and all that stuff. This was shoddy where finding out now that the Washington Post, and in B C news has found out and actually does have sources who were in that room that that comment was made in such obvious jest and sarcastic tone, and that it was just such a clear not it was not actually real. He said to somebody else would want what much do wear a wire in passing. And in an obvious context where he wasn't being serious. So the times reported that now that could be munition defy Rosenstein. I don't know what's going to happen. I really don't. There's apparently new stories today that he might resign. He went to the White House. He spent hours there Donald Trump's at a not gonna comment. Into. I knew the facts tremendous, excuse me, the facts, Donald Trump doesn't give a fuck about the facts. I mean, there's something very we're going on here. I can't believe Donald Trump didn't fire on the spot because had that been true. It would have been a fire both ends. However, it's not true and get that doesn't matter. Because that's that's the thing. Donald Trump has never cared about truth in the past. Why would he care about truth now and the time has handed this tomb? So we'll see what happens I really don't have much more to say about it because it's an up. He is a scary thing. I don't think I think Robert Muller's a little too far in at this point to really be completely wiped out. But whatever whatever moving along the other thing I wanted to touch on briefly before we start talking to our special guest tonight. Billy Magnusson is rut Cavanaugh. So now he has two women who've come forward in accused him of sexual misconduct. One is an attempted rape. And frankly, I'm not entirely sure. The other one is, but I do know that the newest one came forward through Ronan Farrow and the New Yorker and her story was from college when they were both in college. I'm very uncomfortable with all of this because I have been shouting from the rooftops since back when it happened that. I think Al Franken was mistreated, and I hated that he was being guilty deemed guilty declared guilty without any type of investigation and due process. I don't think the same thing should happen to Cavanaugh. I don't however the Republicans want no process, they seem to want no process and the process they are willing to invoke is such a horse shit. You know, trumped up for lack of a better phrase process that it's like what are we doing here? What's the point of this? It is hard to try and find out the facts when you're dealing with Republicans because they and I hate to say such a blankets. Statement like this. But it seems to me that they will lie cheat and steal and do whatever they have to do to get whatever the fuck they want. And I you know, I saw Michael Moore recently on a bunch of stuff because he has his movie coming out Fahrenheit eleven nine. And he said exactly what I'm thinking. I said the pedestrian I interviewed for this said, why couldn't you just say free college. Well, we did say free community college, and you have to work the payback. And I said that's how we lose elections. Right. Do what they do say free college yet. But we hadn't figured out how we're gonna pay for it. Who cares just say just say things like free college free health care, even if they're not sure how he would pay for it. Even if they don't have the exact plan put together in lined up just say it because that's what people want to hear. And that's what will get them excited and out to vote and someone said to him. Well, you've really just wanna say random things you don't wanna like have a plan. And you can't say things, you know, that makes. You know, better than the Republicans democrat, it'd be better than they should take an example. I don't to be better anymore. I wanna win right. I to. Now's the I don't want to be better. I'm tired of being better. I want to win. And that's what I will know the focus. It's time to win. I don't wanna cheat. I don't want to do any of that shit. But it's time to win. But any who I don't really want to do L on that stuff because it's just it's just whatever doesn't do any good. And we have a special guest coming in tonight. Billy Magnusson movie-star TV star. Netflix star. He's going to be here. Very soon until then Tom Johnson be learner. You're listening to the next best thing right here on Radio Free, Brooklyn. We're going to be right back. Right. People some sometime say can you curse on this? Or again, really is the Brooklyn resident. Yes, now, I am wasn't originally Ryan born queens Woodhaven near what would heaven? Yeah. You've really Google deep Google. Well, well, I wanna talk about that. So your mom aerobics instructor. Yeah. My mom's Drovers and your dad's professional bodybuilder. Right. He was he was snow bodybuilder in kickboxer. Actually, he fought at the the garden. You know, there is a there is a trophy in our house a plaque where you know on April twentieth. Nineteen eighty it's him standing for her a guy hand-raised, wait. He boxed him to death. Jeff. Hit it. Wow. But it's five years before I was born. Yeah. I didn't know that kick boxing like you went head to head with evil. Yeah. Kick boxing. We're now you hear about people doing kickboxing for like workouts? Well, there's different things when you go to those like rumble, right? What is shadow by private, right and like USC? So what are they still real into fitness where they always really indeffinite? And so, yeah, they're like there's definitely a tick in the back of my brain all the time being like go to the gym. You should go the gym Bill by my parents in my head while stay in shape. That's good interview. When you show for thanksgiving like, oh, oh, you're feared you. You're right. Your fear. How did we meet, dude? Right. Exactly about that. For ripping up the softball field. Ripping up the south elm about thing. What of we in the Broadway where the yes, we do. And we put we we are the keys must. Belly lists player. I've talked about it on here. Okay. 'cause this is funny. Like what the hell? We would sit there. Somebody like. Okay. All right. We're gonna get any right? We're gonna play right? That guy sucking today. Here's what's hilarious. Yeah. I we won the ball once. Yeah. I did win the Volvo. Did you do? Yeah. It's what the fuck then. Why are we not on what to win the ball means? It's basically like MVP of the game. Yeah. I played in two games. You really got the ball. I was there for like six I played into. It's what the hell's happening here. And here's the Riemann. Funny, part is Billy. We're under thirty five, you know, and pretty and stuff. That's awful say there are guys that. Yeah. Their knees aren't working anymore and stuff like that. But thank you have only five years on that team. Oh, sure side, get it. I get why there but in the spot it seemed like we wanted to win. Yes. We did win. And we did win. We did when we are. We are the defeated team championships of two thousand eighteen here. Talking to him right here. Right. I'm can way so was professional bodybuilder and kickboxer your mom was an aerobics instructor. So why did you move moved to Georgia when you were ten you guys moved to Georgia coming Georgia. Yeah. So we were living in Queens, New York. And the neighborhood was kinda getting bad. There was drive-by shootings happening. This was like nineteen ninety four or something. Like, yeah. There's drive by shootings happening in queens, because we're driven from we were I remember my dad tells me the story that there was we are outside working in the garden. And a guy comes running down the street is like you gotta help me. You gotta help me whatnot in another guy comes running down the street and stabs the guy and he has. Because he was dealing on his corner bike. It was just like they had specific drug corn was your dad, like don't worry. I'm kickboxer. No. He wasn't like that. But he was like you gotta do that in front of my kid. Really? You got to do that right here in public daylight like that death? You were. Oh, so you're live you were there. Yeah. I was nine at that time. Oh, you remember. Yeah. Holy shit. Yeah. It's weird. Seeing another guys have another guy nine years old. Yeah. Were you scared? Was it scary? Like now, it's like oh shit that happened. But like at that age, you know, you're just like now at that age. Be like some. Really? Well, you from New York like, that's, you know, maybe you're a little more have tougher. I was in the mid west on. No. Yeah. I just I didn't think anything of it is I saw like when you're young and you walk in Jamaica avenue, and did you stuff it? Yeah. It was. Scary stuff. Yeah. As long as you're not involved in it. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, that's what I was gonna ask you so coming is a suburb of Atlanta. Yeah. Cummings georgia. Yes, really close to climaxing. Georgia. Really? Yeah. There's a class. It's well coming. Yeah. Like the thing of the writer e Cummings is named after him. I doubt it. Okay. Put it could be. Yeah. But so is it weird moving there from here from New York says your, yeah, we stopped. We hit Miami first. And then we hit we were driving actually back to New York to move back because Miami wasn't working out is a great destination for vacation. But we didn't. I I went to Catholic school like at beat there in the Catholic school. Really? Yeah. I who. Nice. The none beat you up. Wait. You're not like six years old. No. So you think the days when they hit you with rulers then? No, that's. That was still happened. Did you go to Catholic school in New York? No. I did not know, I guess it's more common down there. I just don't know that was the school. I went to. All right. So then you had no decision in that. So why Georgia then, but you're just driving up. We've visit some friends in rhino of Atlanta. Incoming and I think my mom was like this is the spot. Really? Yeah. It was that round. I can teach aerobics here. Exactly what they did. They keep doing their stuff. She still she is an active member at the YMCA and is like she's very a events coordinator involve guy that YMCA and you have two younger brothers. Yeah. I saw your youngest brother. I think at one of the park games. He came to watch. It's not play. Yeah. And always had beer, look, exactly alike of really, oh, come on. You guys. Don't get that. He's nine years younger than me. But you guys don't get the toll that a lot. Yeah. He's my brother. What about the middle? Did you guys all know? He's he's the the middle kids. Always the weird. He's like he's at least five six inches taller than me. Oh, man guy. Wow. Just Viking of a man like bodybuilder like your dad. No, no. He was he was a big wrestler though. He was like Georgia state champion. Wow. He was a really loved Georgia or jars your loved him. I don't know if he loves Georgia where are your parents now where does own Dylan Georgia. Yeah. So your parents weren't like actors are any of your family members, like the Athol, no November might will artistic. I my mother was she actually went to the Manhattan institute of art. I believe and was a an artist painter and drawer. And my father is a cabinet maker, which is also artistry would I think it's naturally been there, but in a different form. So when did you notice like not just that you liked to act, but like, oh, I wanna pursue this. I had enough to really I didn't know what I want. Yeah. Let's let's let's expand this conversation. Let's not like we're interviewing I guess made. But let's talk about shit like it's crazy society puts you at a place at eighteen where you're like. Oh, freak you. Gotta figure out what you wanna do what you wanna pursue. What are you gonna? What's your major gonna be? What are you gonna do for the rest of your life? Like, that's an absurd time too. I just found my dick like four years ago four years from now, you know, what I'm saying like eighteen year olds. Like, you're like, oh my God. I didn't know this thing works figuring out who I am as a human being. I have to decide what I want to be for the rest of my life. And what I wanted for Sault college is. Yeah. Dumb and less. You really do know what you wanna do? And nobody does then. Yes, I think it is cool. If you understand craft you're getting in like a crafts can be anything can be science. It could be law or it could be a acting or whatnot. I just kinda like gave myself over to it. I was big jock injured myself got put an acting class eighteen years old. I didn't know what I wanted to do. I excelled in this theater program that I had no clue about all the women were their loved it actually start acting till you were eighteen. Yeah. Like seventeen eighteen and that's pretty late the fly just mean like, you know, so you weren't like in theater campus that six year old definitely okay? Okay. Did your parents think like, oh, you're taking house fine. But then when you really like I really do like this. You know, where they like, oh, this is a little risky. Well, I remember again like my decision was like this sounds cool. I'll go to college for this now. Yeah. For not right. Then I talked to my dad was like, hey, we're gonna go to the school North Carolina schoolyards, which I I I did not know anything about and didn't know how great school great school. It was. But I was like I wanna I wanna try this acting thing. And I remember my dad's head dropping and hitting his hands in though and be like. Deep breath. He looked then picked his head up looked at me and said, good luck. Really? And I have to say that was the greatest gift. Well, it's true that he did it's true. But I would think, you know, like, hey, you know, if you're like, hey, I thought I wanted to go and something more steady like kickboxing know about singer. I my family was very supportive. Okay. So it's right after college are you? Okay. You guys get high school in two thousand three so collagen what two thousand seven seven ago. So you made your Broadway debut right after college for you, very unusual story two again like a tidal wave came. I think it's all chaos. I think it's absurd life all of it. I think it's just when opportunity arises you got it's either you sink or swim. Yeah. You know, you got gotta take the risk in link. I think my whole career is a. A bunch of failures of personally. Well, personally, there's things that you know, you were working towards and if my biggest failures were the not taking the shots. Okay. The annot if you take the shot, you always have the opportunity to get it. But you could fail and fuck it, whatever of wait for the next one. And it's learning that just take it. You have any thinking of anything you didn't addition for or something like maybe even got offered and you didn't take no nothing specifically like that. But I do there are moments of shot myself in the foot, but at the same time if I was feeling that way at the moment, right? Yeah. I don't know what is it better or one again, my stories my story, and I can't compare it to everyone anyone else. And okay, another deep shit that I've been contemplating the and whatnot. I don't know. It might be just thirty three. That's not. It's not all young. It's just like that spot. It's young. We have our west of our lives of feel old. Yeah. Yes thing. So yeah. I just turned thirty one. And I was like oh my God. Life's over those are gray hairs. I thought they really do you feel like it was a second turned thirty. I was like, okay. Well, I guess my life as a young person is over. Yeah. Now when we turn sixty we'll think what the fuck was. I think no. But there is a difference between twenties in my thirties. Yeah. One hundred. I should yes. Yeah. What was the the point? We were talking about before this will you may know case so in two thousand right after college you made your Broadway debut in the Ritz. Oh, no, no, not that. I was talking about. Oh, baggage. I don't have to compare my career to someone else's if I get a job or someone else's someone else gets his job. I don't have to carry that weight of losing that job someone else. I didn't lose the job to someone else. I it wasn't my job. Right. Sunrise to worry about it. Right in here. New York, especially if you are going up for roller something, and it's a thirty year old guy. Okay. You might come down to the seven people, then they can get a specific as like, okay? They wanna six three with blue eyes and black hair who's a Virgo and bottle, and they can get that specific. Because it's there's that many people here. So it's not like, I just wasn't talented enough. It's like it just wasn't for me. I think the pool in New York is different. I think it's weeded out much faster than like, Los Angeles or something like that here, you're one in a hundred let's just say there's just one hundred in Los Angeles. You're one in one hundred thousand really you think so it's more competitive there. No. I just think the pool is bigger. Okay. Every day you have someone arriving in Los Angeles who was their prom king or Queen someone was like, oh, you should be in movies. They're showing up every day. And then it's comfortable to live there in Los Angeles. Okay. Gotcha. It's a comfortable place live is cheaper than New York. This is not a place to live, and I have seen people. Come the second people. Come here. I've seen people come here. Go to five auditions not get them like it's expensive. They leave. They spent their whole high school and college years can't wait to get to New York. Then they come in. They're like, oh, I wasn't casting mmediately. I'm gonna go work at my that's pharmacy. So then naturally the the market here in New York weeds out swiftly. Yeah. I hear them it just cuts it out. I remember I want to say between my twenty five to twenty nine when I was that age. There is always room. I would end up with other actors like we were at a certain tear. It would always be like the same ten guys. Yeah. For the same role. And we all knew who was going to get that job. Really? Oh, yeah. We'd be like phils getting this fucking one today. That's Steve's getting that that. Yes. Eve's getting this. When it's my turn gal. Well, you knew the pool was so small game. And we started kind of helping each other in a sense as good. So you don't feel competitive you feel supportive of each other. Again, you know, you know, you're working virement, you know, the world's you know, what excites. The the people around you. And you want you want to, cultivate, a commune in you. And when you have a community that smaller, you are aware of it more great in two thousand seven you're never revival of the Ritz Terrence McNally's play which starred Rosie Perez net. Kevin Chamberlin Brooks man skits for Kerr, and what was your role in that just the guy in the turquoise underwear? Okay. You are go boy. Anyone who just no, that's it's a farce it set in Manhattan bath house, which doesn't even exist anymore. Really? Right. Well, there there's the Russian Turkish path over how was that experience? Was that awesome? I mean, when you first learned to you, you know, you're gonna Broadway debut is that really. Yeah. I remember go or having the Broadway from having my parents committed my aunts and uncles, my godmother and godfather, which they know who all your. They didn't they didn't know that was going to be. Bikini, bathing suit thing in various. Yeah. Was you're like what what's happening here. Yeah. Oh coming you. Thank you. He went to college for this. But no, they couldn't be couldn't have been more supportive at one the real experience. I took away from that was I under studied three roles and I remember on a Saturday morning. I got the call ten AM. They are going on for the house going on at one o'clock knife. And I was going on for Terry Hughes playing the detective in it, and as an understudy, you you kinda rehearse right? When during the day while you do the show tonight. So ten AM. They're like get here. Now, you're going on for Terry. And I'm like oh shit. We haven't blocked the second act of the show as the understudy. Oh, really never tried that. And I was also doing to other understanding to other roles. So I get there were running. I act lines with me and the the other Kathy all show up. We're doing lines going through it. We blocked the first act Harry. Did he something happened to Terry? He hurt his back. He really like messed up like vertebrae or Sancho like that. So we rehearsing the first act rocking at one not one o'clock here, we're going on. So literally the curtain up. Don't remember thing. Don't remember curtain comes down act to during intermission. What do you mean? Don't remember do you didn't remember what it goes? I just don't remember the experience. I remember going. Got your lines and stuff. I was like, no, no I had the line like again like being on some a member and being in the theater you naturally memorize the whole here. Dolly the whole play you just know literally every note so intermission happens when not did no one think to say, or what did you not think to speak and be like, hey, I haven't blocked the second act. Well, during intermission all the actors get on stage curtains down we block the second acting door intermission on. There's a whole like farcical scene on the bed where we're jumping around doors opening and closing G. And we literally block it during intermission. We go over like three times. And then we'd like do the Saudi now. Fine. I don't remember. It was fine. I remember Seth Radetsky writing like dick Yetlis review being like and daily Magnusson. Got his equity cards so weird thing with your career. Didn't you do something else with him later that he was in? Was that this that was that was that was in that he was in this in that show? Then what what are you writing about you? He because he just had a blog and one was writing I read his book, Broadway nights. Really? Yes. I bet he has some crazy story. His his mom was like an opera singer. She wanted him to be an opera something. I don't know. Whatever very big break, though came in twenty twelve for you when you were casting Vanya and Sonia and Sasha and spike Masha by yeah. Alongside you know up and comers like Sigourney Weaver and David I'd peers. Yeah. And you played spike this these are like, you know, he had been Frazier ABS over, but he's been huge Sigourney Weaver's huge. I mean, how in this is the lead role your it was originated a lead role in a play. But it started in New Jersey. Yeah. So that's harder. Right. And then it went to Lincoln center, then Broadway all within one year. Yeah. He tracy. Well, again, you have that caliber with it. You got Christopher durang. You got Ryan. Ready Weaver typified peers, usually like when shows are going to go from here to there and kind of get their feet wet, and then go to Broadway, it can take years of rewrites and recasting or whatever. Like, this was you guys. It was just you guys. We just frigging ran the gambit with that play. Just kinda rocket. Shit clicked. And they're like, let's keep doing everyone. Agreed. You wanna move it to Lincoln center's? Oh. Oh, yeah. Again, like, my understanding of the worlds of the or even the business was not fully defined John for myself. So I'm just the fucking kid. Just being like, yeah. Let's let's do this. I'm I'm for a good time. Why not that's a good Intel? I'm getting paid right? I'm getting paid right? I mean, that's a good talent. There was days. I it was either getting a sandwich or taking the subway to work. Yeah. What am I gonna do? Really? Yeah. Many homes. That's the life of. That's what we have, you know. Okay. But then they'll say what when all those places huge success became. I mean, earn its money back the Broadway show within like four months, and then it gets ninety for six Tonys wins. Best play you're nominated for Tony award. Crazy. Right. Was it surreal yet? Or we like. Yeah. Whatever. Again, I. The biggest you don't freak out about stuff. I know you do. But it's because other people were putting it on me. And I was like two that's an owner. Don't. Yes, it is an honor not hunting it. I wasn't right. Doing it. Again. I was having a good time. Just hanging out. You know, just getting the call for my mom, the more being like, hey, you got nominee for your mom told you. Yeah. Well, I thought I was like, oh, the play got nominee because it was getting for the drama desk, and blah, blah, blah. And I was like, yeah. Got nominated. She was like, no, no, no you, and I was like, what do you mean me? And then just told, you know, but I got floored by then I all of a sudden, I'm doing interviews morning. That's I do have to say though, pulled away. Like, I remember that night doing the show, and it was the hardest show ever done. Why? Because all of a sudden, you had an expectation you had a standard to work by. Rather than just doing your thing? Yeah. Yeah. I could see it chain. It literally changed my perception of everything where I was like I just to this because I loved it now. Like for some reason, I mean a competition in. Yeah, I'm trying to schmooze people and shit. Are you gonna do? Yeah. I am competitive. But the don't like during like all the the month of whatever it is. You know, find out what a like, I didn't know you had a smooth and do all the things and one and there's a whole game about it. That's yeah. And I was I wasn't aware about this. I didn't know you had to show the defense. I didn't know you had to do all these things. I'm just like. Yeah. It's awesome. That sounds good. Yeah. There are so many wards given out where you're like that person was smooth. They were kissing a ring. Yeah. This be honest. Yeah. No, I can easily say, right? So many people. Keep it kosher here will year year, though, you were up against some big really impressive twenty lube who Richard kind and corny be vans who won. And again, he comes back around you went onto work with him again. Yeah. How'd you feel what did you grieve said that you lost? Well, to be honest when I walked in island's just like, this is awesome. Great opportunity whatnot. Yeah. When the names came up was like better fucking. Fuck it. Not. There's definitely moment. Where like, yeah. Yeah. You're just like 'cause you not in that moment. Underhill shows up, and it is nice to be nominated. Ain't it really is a huge on such an especially in your how old are you twenty five. You're really young. I yeah. You said what year? I don't twenty twelve twenty twelve. So yeah, you're like no twenty seven. Okay. Twenty six you know, they so so yeah, it is nice Manabe huge on her. But once you nominated sure it would who's going to be like, oh, that's okay. I'd like to lose. No, exactly. Right. And the winter goes through your God damn it. So let me just tell me so you and onto where with Vance he played Johnny Cochran, and you played Kato kaylin in American crime story. So when you worked them later you like this is the fucker that one mile ward. Not like that nicer. Okay. By one my ward. No 'cause I met him so many times prior. You know, just you're like, hey, we were always at a an event or something. But let's talk about the show that twister. Did they OJ Simpson? Yeah. So two thousand sixteen was weirdly, a huge here for OJ even though he was in jail because that was when the like eight hour documentary came out guys a series. So how like how true crime into that stuff? Are you like, you know, much about the case? Now, the book that Kato kaylin did I you can't like the I think with any project you show up playing your part, and you want it, cultivate, the story the best way with your character. You're just adding to the pot by that one. What needs to happen? I wanna play something for you. Oh my God. I heard kinison I saw Kato was interviewed around the time that it was coming out. And they are just like they asked him about the casting not just with you. But God it's short. Yeah. So this is Kate tailing Brian after before the ethics. Here's comes out at fifty six years old. You can tell Cato is pretty much still be joke cracking guy who gained fame in nineteen Ninety-four is OJ as house guests. I wanted his take on the cast of American crime story. John Travolta's Robert Shapiro payroll. I thought was very very compassionate, man. And I think will be credible Sarah Paulson as Marcia Clark that hair makeup on this one per job. Marcia Clark, then of course, God. Okay. Let my hair was never that long. Otherwise. Yeah. It was great looking girl. Oh, we'll personnel. You're right. His hair was absolutely that long. Yeah. But I will say this when I saw 'cause I I watched that series before I met you. I didn't never put together. Oh, so when I googled you pull the picture, it looks nothing like you. Oh, really? I mean, it looks kind of like him. But there's just a photo. It's just like a straight on headshots. Yeah. That was even before we've really got into out with the test that. That's out is just the that's the one they showed him when he said. Yeah. So you never met Cato. You never got there. I did reach out to him. Okay. Because I want he had of clothing line. And I just wanted to be like nice to cast and crew. I wanted it was like, hey Kato. Thanks for. You know, I'm I'm glad you exist. Trial. Yeah. So so like, hey fashion line of get people's shirts. But then he wrote back. He was like, yeah. Let's get E T out there. And we'll do an interview and I'll come on set and went out, and I was like, no, no, no, no. No, no. I was saying Hello. I was saying Hello. I like to support your brand. And yeah to thing and it never happened because he wanted a lot. I was gonna say, well, you know, that's all he's not an actor. Like, this is all you're wanting a lot, but it is life. Yeah. It is life living somehow. Yeah. No also in that series was David Schwimmer who most people know is Ross from friends he played Robert Kardashian directed me in say you knew him for two years before he directed you in sex with strangers at second stage. I don't think people realize most people realize how much of a true like thespian. He is. Yeah, he came from Chicago. Right. And he started the love something ladder. Ladder theater. No. I don't. But it's something I could be so wrong. We are for the record. It's the looking glass theater. He was your director at that guy. Oh, yeah. I was gonna say how was he is a director. I I really vibe with him. I think we communicated. Well, I think you know, again, it was me David and Anna Gunn in a room creating Michaud strangers and Lauren Easson, the the writer, and we were literally just making this this play out, right and second-stage second-stage, and it was just a wonderful collaborative experience. And know how grew and what it became and had you been afraid. How'd you watched friends? Pretty big show. There's no way to avoid it in our culture. It was would I say I have ever been like oh friends zone tonight. Never once. Okay. But are you like that about anything unsolved mysteries? You know, I have my guilty pleasure. Penan teller's fool us. It's my favorite pool. Las what's that view net pen and tellers Fula. Isn't it bullshit? No. Yes. But fool us is like they just it's basically American idol for magician. Really? It's fantastic. All right. Well, then you're huge break. Number two came in two thousand fourteen this time on screen now. This is this is a huge deal when you were cast as repulsed prints in the film version of James pine in Stephen Sondheim's, musical into the woods. Yeah. How did that happen? I mean, did you was there rigors audition process like was it long and drawn out. No, again, I was doing von you Sonya Masha spike, and I was in my dressing room. I shared a dressing room at Lincoln center with David Hyde Pierce, and all of a sudden after the show you hear you hear someone knocking on the door opens. And I'm like, oh, you're her. You're the you're the chick your I couldn't think of her name Meryl Streep no way. I couldn't think of her name. She was so kind so sweet. But like again like. Like, you're you're that you're the one right? You're hurt. You can't. Oh, my God later I had on dishing for into the woods and did the singing thing and whatnot. Which was a trash fire. It was just whatever. Really? Oh, dude. I I'm not a singer. So you didn't do musical theater leading up to this. No, no. No. No, no. Like, I admire what people do with musical like two eight shows away. Singing when I applaud people that do that. I think it is unbelievable. What they achieved just doing a play eight hundred a week training. Yeah. But to sing and whatnot and your life is taken away because you can't speak the when you're not singing. So I go in on this. Fine. I get cast in it wasn't that long and rigorous of an audition process. I I wouldn't why this was okay. What did you've been in on movies and stuff you've been in like four films, and I had like a happy tears. I had some I had film credit but ended with Parker Posey end Demi Moore and rip torn which all. Yeah. Wild man. He's still he's still. Okay. Good. Yeah. But then I got the job. Whenever we go to London. We we're on like, the I read through whatever street leans over to me and goes, I Gotcha. This Jeff did she say there did she get you the job? She did really what just 'cause she liked you the play. I guess why? Oh, 'cause I was gonna say you worked with some cool people before then. But this was like it's funny because it's like a who's who of show business? You have talk show host. You have Tracy OMO news characters sketch comedy, then movie stars Cristea, Christine, Bryan. Who's a big broadly lady movies as well? But seriously, James corden, Tracy on Johnny Depp, Meryl Streep, Anna Kendrick, Chris pine your. Emily blunt, Christine brandy. But Chris pine than you are like the two brothers and stuff you're walking to room full of like James corden wasn't that famous at the time because he has sure hasn't started yet. But were you was it intimidating where you excited where you? Again. Now, I just got off a play with. I mean, it's Gordon Reever and David hype. Yeah. Good prep for that. There is. And then also I had already been into my career eight years eight years. Yeah. But Meryl Streep I know I know I know what you're saying. I and like don't get me wrong. When I got around her when I met her again, I'm nervous and whatnot. But at the same time you are hired for a job. Yeah. Do your job. Right. You don't have to worry about anyone else. Well, okay. So okay. She'll everyone else picture you said you weren't surprised to hear that you weren't. You. Didn't do any musical theater. Was that entity? That was the hardest part. I was going to giving the sun. It's not like, you're just you know, Sante homeboy. I remember we went to homeboy Stephen Sondheim, you're homebody. Yeah. We go up to go, Chris. And I go and listen to like forty five fifty piece of work strove recording agony, right? Show. Disdain. From from me. Five how regain the hot one from me? Win the. Is the old music? I'll tell you'll. Patel seats by our maintaining her line can becoming and frequently being lied hearty. Painful vengeful when you know, she would go with you. Fair only were too. Okay. That's Chris pine and Billy Magnusson singing agony from sometimes into the woods. Really? Now. You know what? I thought was funny about this. Yeah. So in your Broadway debut in the Ritz, and certainly in your Tony award nominated performance. Yeah. You were basically naked on stage. Yes. Yes. And actually every Broadway show. I've been in my underwear, really everything. But even in this. There's a at that part use like rip your shirt open. I was like, oh, wow. That's why. Because like, that's such a movie thing. You like to add it like the competition about like, physique and stuff. Well again. Now, I can't rob Marshall was like he kind of let us play in like figure fine the song out. And Chris I just like kind of we became friends and just put would be funny. What do you want to do? And like again, it's a dick swinging competition. It's about 'cause you don't get that as much in the the Broadway show. You can see the original cast which is nominal. But the brothers are way more into themselves than each other is supposed to you guys, which it's you're like, you are it's funny 'cause you're concerned about yourself compared to each other actor. Yeah. Did you guys really like ride those horses and stuff? Oh, yeah. Man. I had like four five months horseback. Draining after doing this movie night joined the first ever American coke for routine. What the hell ad hoc. Let's talk about that. Sees coke Peru is basically hockey and on horseback while the field is about two soccer fields. Big. And you all is a dead goat carcass that weighs seventy pounds. So you hitting it with your not hitting it. You have to lean off your horse lean and just slap at no take seventy pounds up off the ground bloody in like do. They put the go-to arrest. Okay. Five minutes before the game starts of. It was the the most mainly thing I've ever done my life. That's crazy who puts to rest, the priest. We try we have a documentary coming out soon over whereas there was just a huge article in New York Times about two weeks ago about the the third time we've been there the US coke Bruce team. I was part of the Irish on that ever went out. I feel like in America that get a lot of protests. Why? Because people are I saw protester the Honey factor. I know, but I'm just saying they call it a pigskin. There's a reason they call it skin because it is a pan. I think more more chickens are killed from chicken wings. They are then anyway. Absolutely winner. So the way coke Bruce started. It was a nomadic tribe thing in a tribe would come to another tribe and they would fight over goat and play this game. And then whoever one it got the goat. And they would feast on it. I also like even after we played these games, we played Kosic son, China and Russia people are eating the go. Yeah. Really? Yeah. We with the other team. He doesn't get destroyed in the game. It gets very well beaten up. What do you call it? When you beat up meat and is softened. Yeah. What tend to tender? Yeah. Yeah. That's a goat. Oh, yeah. All right back into the woods. What's so you? Okay. So there's no question that acting for this screen and stage are very different. They are. It's funny. What do you think different? I think the first time I ever did anything on camera was way late. Like, I was I think it was like twenty one or something. And I had done that stage stuff since you know, I was like fourteen fifteen so I never really act on camera for in the first tape. It was a senior in an apartment just playing. A game is supposed to be like, hey, what time are they coming here something and they're like, okay action. I was like what time are they coming? I you know, which is normal. On stage that sounds normal that looks normal that is normal, and I just thought okay here, I go I'm acting now. And it was like, and I got have we seen in and then I stopped myself. And I was like I just looked at them. And they're looking to be like, but have you ever seen any of L Pacino's performances? But he's playing great guy. You know, like I was just supposed to be a guy kind of talking to an apartment. Yeah. You know, like, I just caught. And I did I caught myself because I was like, why am I yell ING? So just that you know in subtleties that in that way, it's different. But also people say that they think movie actors of LA and stayed here. And there's a difference between those people, and these no, you don't absolutely didn't notice any difference in approach or. And I'm talking about into the west because a lot of those people some of those people, you know, their whole career has been on screen TV or film, but Meryl Streep on that started on stage one again, I think it's to know your stage, and I'm watching Millstream doing this thing she was doing I remember her while washing her work in film, and she's doing these hand gestures whatnot and like from afar, just washing her in person being like what is that? What is these hand things that are close to her face? What's what's going on? Then you look on the camera. And you're like, oh, she knows her stay. She knows her prosciutto. She knows where she is. She knows what stories you selling. You know, I it might be from her forehead. He her subtleties like in iron lady. She's playing an old Margaret Thatcher's delay. She walks, and like just little things that are really is. How an old woman who's a little heavy set. Yeah. She's the best at that stuff. But I think it can translates any actor. Again, you're on stage. You're prosciutto is this big. You got hit that guy in the back row. And then TV film year stage is this somewhere Bach. Yeah. But that's not something that comes naturally it takes. Again, with film is you breathed with the characters you're there with the characters, you know, the frame again, it's going to be as close as that's your stage. Yeah. Is the frame with stage. If you film it you're pulled out because like the joy of going to live theater is playing and pretending with the actors like as an audience member you get to play right? You get to dream. You'll hand you go to the theater knowing that. That's why you'll people that do methods. Do you mother, please? Maybe I don't know. I am not Daniel Day-Lewis so fucking Lutely. No, okay. Hoss. Like, especially on stage. People know they're going to theater like they that it's fiction. I don't get it. And I don't know how his wife gets it. Yeah. Like how she can handle that be like Lincoln. It's like, what are you talking about go pick up the daughter? Yeah. Like, no, I why do you have to do method? I think. It doesn't make sense. Like, we know what we're doing. There's a job that needs to be done. And I it's like the whole story with what's Dustin Hoffman. And. What? No, he liked toots. Doing a movie with Peter O'Toole doesn't often stays up all night and whatnot. He hasn't taken shower and whatnot and Peter tools, like try acting next time will, you know, then you lose almost died during the filming of dances with wolves. Because he literally like gave us a hypothermic. He almost fucking died. And then he still does method. Yeah. That's I'll tell you some serve Bunbury third. I don't give a shit. They don't get him. I fit. No. And that's that's greater. That's Meryl Streep doesn't do it. So I don't think anybody. So you did. So I don't wanna move on from into the woods. But you get to work you met and got to work with Steve Zahn him personally. Yeah. So I guess we jump that story. Oh, yeah. Because you went to the music. Yeah. Yes. So we went to see this fifty piece orchestra listened to him whatnot. And he's like, hey, why don't you sing a track with them and criminals like, that's unbelievable. So we went in we're in the booth the song cert- we start singing we look into the sound booth and Stephen Sondheim's. Passed out sleeve. Hey there being like what the fuck? He's all he's really old nice guy. But did he help? And then and then he's like a love song love song. I was like is really funny then then at the premiere I remember him coming up to me. It's like you so good in the movie you were so good in the movie. Nice, dude. Chris you were great. I caught you Chris. Yeah. He had no clue who. Well. He he didn't. Yeah. He may you. That's awesome, though. And it was fun to making. I mean like I actually did. Now, your prince what's that you like sawmills? I wasn't sure. Because a lot of that movie looks like could have been filmed with like a greens CGI looks because it's fantasy. Oh, so they've built like when they were in the woods. It was a sound stage that was two hangars big. And it was woods there. Trees there and everything I just think of the art department guy. That's like, hey, hey, Rick today. You gotta put all the leaves on the trees, you got us to Morris. Yeah. And they just every single leaf that's the power money. But it is damn so cool. Oh, so it looked great three Oscars. Did you go to the Oscars year? No, you didn't get to go. I've never been to the Oscars. But you were nominated I was in bridges spies and the big short and still fame year. But you are much bigger part in this than the big short. Yeah. Yeah. But still you never got to go. That's okay. But since I we have to get to I wanna talk about what you're working on now. But also date night. Game night. Right. And what are the things? I was gonna say was that have you seen date night with Tina Fey and Steve? Yeah. Similar plot. Whatever your guys so much funnier which is a huge compliment. They are really funny people. I don't know who wrote date night. But, but no, yours is darker and just twenty dude, I think John and John's made have really funny script and Yahoo did right in John Bailey, and John Goldstein, okay. Before we get to that. Because I want a friend of mine, and I should have watched these things about my friend is such a huge fan of Ingrid going goes, west and grit goes to play like real psycho asshole. Nice change of pace because you're usually like the funny princely going. Yeah. He was like the alternate can get your bomb. Yeah. Deuce, bro. So kind of like you in in game that you play like, bro a guy. But you're sweet and funny. Yeah. He has friends. Yeah. He's you know, he's not he's not malicious wanna hurt people. He doesn't want anything. So is this do you like playing the villain? Oh, angered goes west. I loved it. Again. It was like a running gun kinda shoot. Really? It was we would lose sets on the day. And be like how are we going to solve this? How are we going to tell the story and still 'cause we were such an ensemble together? Aubrey plaza Olsen like. Met met Spicer OJ. OJ Jackson them. It was so good. And then with game night. Yeah. The okay I wanna play a little it's just a click seen. This is the rea- my favorite part of that movie. I kept trying to find a way to make this is doable seen couldn't. So this is just the money. No. I love that right to my favorite part of that entire movie is when. Hey. That's a lot Conine Miami. That is part of the whole movie. Really? Yeah. But I couldn't like hit away because it's all because it's cutting to you guys. And then this guy is not here. But okay. So this part I'm gonna play real quick as when you is basically your broken into really rich guys house. You have to you have to get your hands on something, and you smartly thank everyone's paying attention to this fight. That's going on. I'm going to grab him. Unfortunately, the guy gets punched out, and he falls right in front of you. Here's a real quick part of that. How are you? Yeah. Who are you? What do you do with my head? I was just admiring it. I got a bunch of fancy pants eggs back at home in my mansion. Uh-huh. Ugly. Guy. I certainly hope so I'm the CEO of cyber Dyne systems. Everyone. Hold on a second. All right. Cyber Dyne system. You know, what that reference Terminator that is, sir? Up. Yeah systems. Did you sit mansion? Yeah. Said in my man's, then my man tell we just listened to with headphones on in the real that sucks to play clips from movies just audio because what makes that so funny as you're like nervous like your little like. Because these guys are he's sickeningly rich guys who are as you save number of times paying to see poor guys play there. Fight fighting game hilarious. How how is it working with Rachel and Jason Bateman? Oh, man. It was a it was treat love that film because you really got to be hilarious in that room. Yeah. Again, it was just an opportunity. You know, what someone described it to me as I knew I had a fast pitch and a fast pitch in my career. And I think it goes back to von. Yeah. And it was finally my chance to go to the major leagues and throw my fast pitch. You didn't. Yeah. Because with into the woods, it's like you kind of out of your comfort zones. You know? Yeah. Very cumbersome. But it was it was an opportunity throw my my fast pitch, again, you I think for me, I hope to always work with collaborative people. And when someone's like go for it do your thing. Make it happen. We'll shape it and whatnot. That's a more. It's much more comfortable to work from that setting. If someone clips your wings before you even get going it's limiting and little. I know I crush crashing fall. And these guys gave you the freedom. They gave me the free. They're actually at the beginning of it. There was a struggle. And I luckily they were so open to talk about it and discussed because I was like guys let me let me just try stuff. Limit. Give me give me a shot. I let me do this thing. And then the no literally became like do the Bill do Billy thing. Do the village Billy bean stew. However, you feel. Yeah. Good for them. Good for them. Good for you for saying that. Yeah. If you had to do that part and not I mean, really because what did make that so good and funny is little subtleties that like I do. I would see you do like on your own at the softball field. You know, what I mean like in like, you can't really direct that. So had they limited you that would have been tough imagined. There were there were definitely moment. I remember the first week in. I at the end of the first week, I had to go and be like, can you just give me a few that were mind? And let me what was what were they doing? It was just it was like played this idea plate this way. And you're like, okay. That's not how I really interpreted it right or saw an understand, you're joking. I try to go for that joke. And they kept wanting to force a square into a circle. And then you're like you picked me let me let me take responsibility. I'm apt at actively working to make this better. I really. I'm going to go for the best thing. And it was honestly just an open communication and understanding like to I've respect everything you've created. And I want to fill it with as much breath in life as I can right. Let me do it. So now you've already finished filming. But there's a live action Aladdin coming out. Yeah. So we were talking about protests. Yeah. With the goat. I did not know that this was happening today when I just read about this apparently because you're playing a prince that was not in the animated version prince unders Ondruska, Anders honors will it's a white character in that's drawing criticism because people are saying that I don't understand this critics are apparently whitewashing whitewashing what this is not a historical event. Again, what is allowed about? It's about a here's my pitch the show. I understood a lot to be a prince Princess and a street rat. This true story is. It's a couple. Yeah. The Princess doesn't wanna be who. She is. She wants to be something else. Aladdin doesn't wanna be street at wants to be something else. They want everything that they are not. And then finally come back to understand. Oh, I'm worth just being myself. And we went to each other. Yeah. They went feather one each other for who they are. Right. So the show is about who they are. And what not to be a part of some film like that. That says, hey, you are worth it. No matter. What's around you? What dress you have what what wish you have what upbringing class? You're in your worth it. No matter. What did you feel you heard about this happening? Like this weird backlash apparently of what what can I say? I can't express someone else's feelings right again. I not heard about it. I was surprised by is what I mean. I did get texts from people that were just like F. You straight just aggressive. But again, I I understand after years of. Feeling negated or whatnot? That can be a har-. A I don't know. What you're I mean like with this. What are they talking about? What is offensive this film at the? I don't know. And it's not like you're not like, you're playing Aladdin. No, I don't get it. I again, I'm I come in. I just love to be outraged around stuff. I'm sorry. I really do. Well, I think Twitter and the social media platforms. Give people a soapbox to stand on. But also anonymous ominous. His name on it is that screen wall. So you're not really know what's coming up to you and saying like hug you for playing this new Princeton Aladdin, which again, I think is so insane. But that's just me. But it's they had that screen. So they don't actually see they don't actually know that you're just sending it out there because they might not, you know. And so it's it's tough. I wish that I wish I hadn't read about it. Because I wish that they didn't feel like they needed to respond. Let people be mad get over it. It's great. It's going to be a great movie, you work with well Smith, you singing this and say, well, let's surely Allah Minkin does the music other new songs in it. Oh, come on. They die. Hey, did you. Well, we sent this ago and it comes out next summer years. Thanks you. Yeah. Of two thousand nineteen so let's two year October two thousand seventeen a while. Yeah. Where was that shot London in Jordan a wow? Yeah. I didn't do the Jordan part. I was like guy prince Sanders out right here. That's funny. He's like. Yeah. Well, the and then velvet buzz but saw. Yeah. It's called velvet buzzsaw always think it's the working title. I'm not sure if it's the right one that J Jilin see maniac maniac came out. That's another thing. When I told you we're coming up people szeswith maniac. Yeah. I when did it come just reading literally two days ago and people are loving the crap out. I hope so what what what tell me about it. What is it? 'cause I haven't even show about connection and people with traumas like mental traumas traumas in their lives and feeling disconnected from. The world and the show is about people finding other on any level of existence, and there are two connections with people, and you can breathe with someone. You can hold their hand. You can be present with them in. This is Joanna hill. Emma, stone Sally fields just in throws. Who the hell? Have you not worked? We're gonna share what care. Why did see her to wishful drinking? Did you know that? She's she's great. So you're also doing tummy store. Your that's premieres next month. Yeah. That's I think Colleen comes out, and that's kind of dark. Yes. A lot of stuff you've done is who are darker thriller. It's going to be a treat. I think it's gonna be a treat of a show where you're just like, so gross and disgusting and tell me story. Yeah. Oh, really? Yeah. I think the title to me when I saw that on your hat, and after I thought it was kind of like, this is us type thing not at all. Really? It's scary. Okay sexy. It's you have favorite scary movie. That's an oxymoron for me. There's no Ciskei movie that I like I hate him. How do you really hates him? I just get scared. Well, I hear a lot of them because they're horrible scary movie is hard to make. Well, you know, you know, what I thought was scary. What was the crista Christopher Nolan film one out in space? Oh, yup. I know there's no nuts. No god. Matthew mcconaughey was in it Batman on getting. Now, the one where he's in space, and they go that planet, and they go down the planet for seven minutes, and they come back the Martian. No. And the guys like it's been twenty seven years, and it was like seven minutes for them on the planet. Yes. That's scary. But that concept of being out in the void of space interstellar. That's it. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. That's that's okay. Says that came out years ago, right? Yeah. That's shit scares me. 'cause you're not scared of monsters ghost stuff that you really hate should jumping out at me. Right. Right. Well, that's the problem. Punt hormones now like in like in. Day dream night game day. God damn it. I was said the dreamscapes. Did you see that started bother you? Okay. Getting I don't have you see that movie. Oh, no. I didn't see it. Now.
