"But behind every great hero, there are others. Individuals who play a crucial role in the achievements of those we read about in the headlines. The ultimate team players. Content to stand behind the curtain, embracing their place as a vital part of a sports success. In horse racing, the are the unsung heroes. All so many of you have taken time to send us messages on social media or to email me personally and tell me how much you enjoy these unsung hero segments and quite typically I will recognize a groom and exercise writer. A stallion barn manager, a breeding manager, whatever it might be. And people that don't often get into the spotlight in our sport. Well, I decided to do it a little bit differently this week, because this past Wednesday, trainer Kathleen O'Connell join me for a one hour conversation about her life and her career. She joined me on my trainer talk show, which you can catch every Wednesday. At 6 o'clock eastern here on the network. But she talked about becoming the number one winningest female trainer in North American thoroughbred racing history. And that occurred this past weekend. On Sunday, at two 36 p.m. eastern, march 12th, when this happened. They come toward the top of the stretch more drama cuts the corner to go to a narrow advantage. My eagle soars down the far outside here comes awesome print, starting to stoke the fires, discrete devil in between horses. They have a final furlong left to go. Here comes awesome prints up on the outside. My eagle source still holding on just in front. It's my eagles sores, awesome prints, discrete devil between them and down on the inside more drama my eagle soars awesome prince. Michael sore is still just in front, my eagle soars awesome prince by eagle soars. A little bit of history there is Kathleen O'Connell becomes the all time winningest female trainer in North America. My eagle soars wins it. That was Jason beam with the call of that historic moment. You know, I'm sure you've watched that race. At least I will assume that you've watched that race a few times since it's taken place. But put me there with you. What was it like as you were watching my eagle sores come down the stretch? Well, you root and sure for all of them and we've been rooting and sharing a specially hard obviously the last week. So it means a lot and it means a lot because it's emotional right over the years. And all the people that supported me as far as workers, owners. Breeders and to do it was a Stonehenge horse was especially special because I worked for the candles for over 30 years. And of course, the strict Campbell passed away. And that was one of the last sources he named. Well, I was going to bring that up to you and you led me right into it. That relationship is so special for you. And you just alluded to the reason why. It's fitting that my eagle sores would be the one to go ahead and put you ahead of Kim Hammond. Exactly. Like I saw, it was going to be a great moment. It is a great moment, but it was a special one. When you hear those words, number one, winningest female trainer in North American thoroughbred racing history. What goes through your mind? Well, it really has a sunken yet to be honest with you. Because, you know, we're just everyday type operation. We've had a few high powered horses over the years, which I'm very grateful for, but we're more of a blue collar group. So, you know, it was work as usual the next day, so to speak. Yeah, you're right back at it. As a matter of fact, when you and I were trying to coordinate a time to get together for this show and record the program here, which is being pre recorded, you and I were trying to coordinate and you said, well, let's see. There's entries that day. There's entries and entries don't close until this time. So the first thing that went through my mind was does Kathleen O'Connell ever get a day off? Well, we take time off, but it's hard to get a whole day off. You know, it's just like people that have children. Do you ever take a whole day off? No, I'm sure you don't. And even when you get babysitters or so on, you know, you're still calling to check in. And it's pretty much the life of a horse trainer. They say never assume, but I assume that you had watched the race a couple of times since my eagle source gave you that record. Have you watched it very much? Oh, yeah. I mean, you watch all races, you know, win lows or try and figure out better or where the horse is going to run back next time. But like I say, it's because so much happened in such a short space of time, you know, you really don't get to digest it, especially that one. How many text messages or phone calls and congratulatory handshakes, hugs, whatever it might be. Did you get after the race? A lot. Too many too many to even acknowledge, I mean, it was just a flow of people and I was very happy. I know Jackie Antonio Gallardo, who was a board, was extremely happy too. He had a quote after the race where he said that he was talking to his wife and he said he really wanted it to be him that was the one to be a board for that record breaking performance and lo and behold it was. He referred to you as being like his mom. So he was pretty excited. Well, he's a major force in my operation to, you know, we ride all rioters on that one rider is going to fit every horse. But I have two or three standbys or the regular ones.

"And I remember, I remember calling the Doc, said Doc. Remember what you told me? He would first time out. I think that's one of my favorite memories, man. Wow. Yeah, it's a great story. And you know Ricky, I'm sure that we mentioned Steve and his influence on you. If you were to pick out your personal unsung heroes in your life and in racing, who would they be? My personal unsung heroes in life at racetrack, man, it would be every single room in hot walker because we don't get the recognition that we rightfully deserve financially, socially. We don't get the recognition in this industry that we deserve because we are the backbone of this industry. You know, all of us are on some heroes. Just like I have a story to tell everybody else has got their own individual story, right? But every body back there, they're all heroes, man. Yeah, I'm so glad you said that Ricky, that's exactly why we created this segment a few years back because we want to shine the spotlight on people. The grooms the exercise riders, the people that don't often get the recognition. They don't find themselves in the headlines, but they are a vital part, a critical part of making racing successful. And Ricky, congratulations on being this week's unsung hero and thanks for telling your story here this morning. Thank you very much. All right, this Ricky do Korean. "Not in the headlines. And that's what you and the team at kesmark do. So in about one one and a half minutes, sum up how this love of horses began for you. Well, like with most girls, I mean, I was raised in Southern California and it happened for me when I was a child. And I was just blessed enough that I grew up and I found a way to make a living at it. You know, horses give us everything. They've given me everything from the roof over my head to the food on the table. And I just, I want to leave the world a better place for them. The direction that we're going in, we just always have to think if you think of the horse first. Then everything happens for the best. That's all you got to do. This is not a difficult, it's not difficult. And it's inspiring to have the new technologies come along and there's data and science out there and I just really feel strongly. You know, to do what's best for the horse at every turn. That's my life. And that's what we continue to do at kes Mark. Yeah, it's inspiring to hear you talk about the work that you do and I know it is certainly benefited so many horses and it all starts with the horse for you and for the team. And Kirsten Johnson and the team at Kev true unsung heroes in our sport. Kirsten, I really appreciate the visit here this morning. All the best and let's catch up again soon. Oh, that's great, Mike. It's been an honor. Thank you guys so much for the work that you all do here, too. Thanks. All right, thanks Kirsten, Kirsten Johnson. This week's unsung hero presented by woodbine entertainment. "I'll see. I'll be the one and this worst went on to win grade great at stake after graded stake after graded stake. Those kind of horses, you can't the horses such an anomaly when it comes to their heart, their grit, and people just, I think, really underestimate how much they love to run. They love to compete. They love being at the race track. I think that's one of the public's most misunderstood things is how much these horses really, really enjoy their jobs. And that one was just bound and determined to go back. He was not done. You know, no matter what anybody said, he was going to beat the odds. And he did. We do a lot of respiratory work too. And have had a lot of horses go back and do very, very well. So that's one story. I mean, I've been at this for 23 years here in Kentucky, but 15 years before that. So I have a lot of wonderful stories and just have had been so blessed to have had the opportunity to be entrusted with some great great athletes. People may not realize that horses when they're rehabbing will spend time in hyperbaric chambers. And you talked about the impact that that has had when you introduce those in Kentucky and now it's kind of a mainstream type of thing, if you will. We know about the benefits that human athletes receive when they're in a hyperbaric chamber and they're rehabbing. How about for horses? What does that do for them? Well, you know, we like to think about the chamber, you know, there's several folds of things that the chamber is good for. But when it comes to the working athlete, I think what I'm so encouraged to see is folks looking at the best recovery possible for these horses. Not just, you know, not the competition, but after the competition, giving these horses back, you know, the best they can be and giving that body. When a horse is under pressure in the chamber, it raises the oxygen level only while they're in the chamber. It goes right back down to normal. But the cascade of events that happens is really quite profound and quite healthy for the horse. More is not better. And we're really, really, you know, careful to treat these horses exactly. You know, the best way that we know how and I think we have the best protocols in the business. But from a standpoint of keeping an athlete healthy after competition and if they have a little hiccup, that the chamber can play a crucial role. If they walk in and they're injured, they walk out their injured. So it doesn't mask anything. It doesn't hop them. It doesn't do anything in a negative way. Other than make them the healthiest they can be. And that's why human athletes and the elite human athletes use hyperbaric as well. Talking with Kev owner Kirsten Johnson here on the horse racing radio network, this edition of unsung heroes presented by woodbine entertainment, Kirsten and the team at kesmark are true unsung heroes. She's talking about the work they do rehabbing our equine athletes. Kirsten, it's not just you. There is a team in place that has been with you for a long time. You've had graduates go on and do great things. Tell me about the team at Kevin. Well, you know, I have folks that have been with me. From my secretary on for 20 plus years and my general manager has been with me for Victor for longer than he and I even like to admit anymore. It is a team approach. It is not a corporate. It is a family farm. We are family. Everyone works as a team and everyone has, you know, real expertise at whatever it is that they do. And I am nothing without my, you know, without my employees. I mean, they are just, they inspire me. They love the horses. They just love these horses. And it's fun when we have horses that come back. You know, when they come back for a freshen up and they walk through the doors, they're always happy to be back. They're always, you know, they're always kind of take a deep breath and they get some good sleep and it's just nice to have staff that I'd leave my, you know, I'd leave a baby with any of them. They're all just really great horsemen. They're super good horsemen. And they really respect the horses all the horses are set up to just, you know, be successful at the facility, relax at the facility and have a great stay while they're there for whatever reason they're there for. We have about two minutes left Kirsten before I have to get to my next commercial break. But you have a quote on your profile on your website that says taking care of horses is my life. And that sums up exactly what this segment unsung heroes is all about. It's about the people who take care of our horses behind the scenes and work with them, not in the headlines. And that's what you and the team at kesmark do. So in about one one and a half minutes, sum up how this love of horses began for you.

"So many unsung heroes in the sport and I'm going to continue to focus on those who do wonderful work behind the scenes. But this week, I thought I'd do something a little bit different. I thought I would shake it up. You're going to hear from a not so unsung hero in Hall of Fame trainer Todd pletcher who gets ready to settle in the mother goose later today at Belmont park Todd looking for a 7th victory in that race. He's currently tied with his mentor, D Wayne Lucas with 6 and if he win today, he'll stand alone atop that list, but he is a top so many listen, I was thinking back to his win in the Belmont stakes in his relationship with longtime relationship with owner Michael poley and I said, you know, let's do something different. Let's focus on a not so unsung hero on this sport in this sport this week. With this week's edition of unsung heroes all presented by woodbine Todd pletcher took time to visit with our Bobby Newman on our bedding with Bobby show yesterday and here is that conversation. Please to be joined by Hall of Fame trainer Todd pletcher now Todd, thanks for taking the time out of your busy schedule. Happy to do it, Bobby. Todd, we know you've been a busy man. First of all, congratulations on a great finish in the Belmont stakes. We saw so much of Mike ripoli on TV. What are your reactions when you're running one two down the stretch? Well, you know, it's pretty rare in any race, especially a classic where you kind of get to the 8th pole and you're running one two and you feel pretty confident that you've got the race in hand. You know, and I'm always one that waits until we get to the wire to really take it in and enjoy it. But in that case, kind of got to watch the last 8th of a mile with confidence that we were going to win. So it's just really, really able to just sit back and kind of enjoy the moment. Must be exciting, getting to do it for two of your longtime owners, donegal racing, and Mike Ripley. How did those two come together in partner in modale before the Belmont? Well, actually, within Mike, obviously, has been following mode Donna Gould's career from the beginning, partly because I train him and partly because he's a son of uncle mug who might obviously owned when he was running and still owns a part of him standing stuttered Ashford, but so he was always taking a little more interest in the horse because of that, but he was also an aqueduct. I think when he won the rems and he was at aqueduct, the day of the wood memorial. So he was able to see him in person a couple of times and Terry was looking to possibly put together a deal. With someone and when it was presented to Mike, he had interest in it and they were able to come to terms prior to The Kentucky Derby. Fantastic effort by both of your runners in the Belmont mode donegal and the Philly nest of course nest was coming off a second place finish in the Kentucky oaks. That was not your only Kentucky oak starter though. You also had, who was a Philly that a lot of us didn't know anything about going into the Kentucky oak. She was undefeated four for four racing in Dubai, but then moved over to your barn. She ran a better than looked race in the yolks. What did you think about her trip? And what do you think about her and tomorrow's grade two mother goose? Well, I agree with you. I think she did run a race that's probably better than it reads on paper and she was still closing pretty well, hundred legs up underneath her at the end of the at the end of the race and the yolks and still closing ground. Unfortunately, there she drew a really wide post and then the mother goose. She's drawn the rail so we kind of went from one extreme to the other. But I think the one turned nature of the mother goose should suit her fine and hopefully the inside draw it in compromiser. Is she a Philly that needs some pace help ahead of her? Yeah, she's not a super quick Philly, but I think if they don't put on much pace that in this scenario it'll probably be okay she'll be able to lay a little bit closer. Well, we've talked about a few of the talented three year olds in your barn. You have so many of them would love to hear progress or the whereabouts of some of the other ones, not only did you have modon ago running in The Kentucky Derby, but you also had charge it and pioneer of Medina, where are these three year olds now and what's in their future? They're both at.

"When their races are coming and we just try and follow that, you know, basically we're just teachers. The young artists and then when they get older, we're just trying to keep them what Josie wants. So I've never had the privilege of sitting on a race horse and resources will thank me for that when they see that I'm probably much, much bigger than you are does. But when you, when you're on a horse, one of the jobs of an exercise rider is to, if the trainer says, hey, we want to go at this time, or we're looking for this type of workout or this type of gallop. It's your responsibility to make sure you don't go too fast. You don't go too slow. How on earth do you keep track of how fast you're going when you're aboard a horse in the mornings? Myself, I don't do a lot of the actual workouts. I just do the galloping, but when I do the odd workout, the trick is for some people to just kind of count in their head or to just look at the fence and see how fast the fence is going by you and judge by that. How fast you're going? And the guys that do a lot of workout get really good at getting their time? And Josie's pretty particular on time. She might tell you, no, I want a 49 or I want a one on one for the 5 8. No, I don't want to go a minute. I don't want to go one O two. And the guys are pretty good at getting the right time for her. Tell me a little bit more about your repetition. Yeah. Yeah, tell me a little bit more about your background. You come from a racing family, take me back to the beginning. Was this all you ever wanted to do was be involved in racing? Yeah, pretty much, yeah, my dad was a jockey for a number of years and then when he stopped that he became a Stuart here in Canada for about 20 years. And he retired from that and now he trained the horse and he's actually still galloping horses at Ford area racetrack. And so I just grew up at the racetrack and I've always been involved as a hot walker groom exercise rider. I'm a valid in the afternoon. So it's kind of just in the blood and there we are. Yeah, there's another job that people might not realize exists on the racetrack, a valid. Tell me about being a ballot and what you have to do there in the afternoons. Basically, we put this out on the horses for the races. And then after the race, take them off, bring them back to the jocks room. And we look after some of the jockeys. Their equipment and their helmets and boots and stuff. We clean all that stuff. And we get to see the races and get paid for it. Yeah, nothing wrong with that. And it's a very important job, too. Yeah, yeah, you got to make sure all the equipment in good shape and you don't want anybody going out there and getting injured or anything. So it's important that we do a good job over there. Did you ever maybe when you were first getting started with that job did you ever mess it up and give somebody the wrong equipment or something? Maybe the wrong silks. All their goggles and helmets and saddles are all marked and boots are all marked. So you can't really mess that stuff up, but you might mix up the silk. So the helmet cover or something once in a while, but not very often. You know, somebody's listening to this and they're thinking about getting involved in the sport as an exercise rider working for a trainer in some aspect in the mornings. What advice do you give to him does? I think go for it. You know, your best bet is to find a farm? There's lots of farms that are training centers. And you can get started there and obviously you just got to take your time and learn properly. You don't want to just come in and jump on a racehorse and off you go. So you want to take your time, get somebody to teach you properly. And because it's a dangerous job, if you don't really know what you're doing, but I think if anybody has any aspirations, they should just go for it. What do you think your life would look like now and what you might be doing if you never got involved with horse racing? What else do you enjoy? I don't know. I don't know if I could after being involved with racing so long. I don't know if any kind of office job would have been for me. You're outside all the time with races and galloping horses and sometimes it's no good when it's raining or anything, but in Canada, I want to get cold, but you're still outside, you're not penned up in an office. So I don't know. I like cooking, so maybe I would have gone with the chef route. If I had thought about it back in the day, but I got stuck here at the track and let's work out for me. So I'm very happy with it. Yeah, it's worked out beautifully. And you can see when you listen to des McMahon talk about his life and his career, why he is a true unsung hero in the sport of thoroughbred racing. Dez before I let you go. Do you have a favorite mighty heart moment, whether it be from the mornings when you've been aboard him or watching him race in the afternoons? I would have to say by far the 2020 queens plate, victory. I told the groom in the morning or something nice because I think he might surprise everybody. And he surprised us and won by 8 lengths. And that was probably the greatest because of the greatest time for me right there. Yeah, it was a special day for the connections of mighty heart and for this week's unsung hero des McMahon here this morning, Dez list. And I really appreciate the visit and thanks for taking a little time to do this with me here this morning and all the best moving forward. All the best with mighty heart tomorrow in his return to woodbine. Thank you very much. Appreciate it. All right. Man, this week's unsung hero that segment presented by woodbine entertainment..

"Just named Canadian horse of the year again for the second consecutive year, a winner of 6 of 17 starts more than a $1 million in earnings and returns tomorrow in the grade two eclipse stakes at woodbine. And all of that success is great, but it wouldn't be possible without a true unsung hero. And that is des McMahon, the longtime exercise rider for mighty heart. I actually reached out to mighty hearts Hall of Fame trainer Josie Carroll and asked her if there was somebody she would recommend as an unsung hero that spends time with mighty heart. And she didn't hesitate. She said, Dez McMahon. Dez is with me now. He is an unsung hero. Appreciate the visit, my friend. Thank you very much. Good to be here. Yeah, congrats on being an unsung hero. I don't know if you look at yourself in that fashion, but I know Josie counts you as an integral part of the team and a huge part of the success of mighty heart. Well, thank you. Great accolade to come from Josie. And everybody in the barn does their part and it's just good to get recognition. What's it like to sit on a two time horse of the year? That's pretty special, you know? He's got one eye, so he kind of stands out, can't really sneak by people on the racetrack. Everybody knows him and they call him by his name and his ears perk up and just feels good that being acknowledged like that, you know? Do you have to do anything different with him in the mornings because he only has one eye? When he was first came in as a two year old and a little bit of a three year old, there was some quirky things that he did to start his training out. But now we just have our little routine that we do and everything works out fine. You know, he was a little skeptical walking down to the middle of the track to start his gallop. So we just kind of walked down the outside fence and get into our rhythm and took a while, but we learned from each other. Now it's just normal for him. He's now 5 years old and you mentioned him as a two year old and some of the things he went through there early on in his career. Have you been with him from the very beginning? Yeah, I was when he first shipped into woodbine. I was on him the first day he came in. And with our two year old, sometimes we switched the riders around a little bit just to get everyone used to everybody and then I just kind of kept getting the night of the day and the stock. And it's been with my fourth summer on them now. I know when he was two and you sat on him for the first time that you weren't thinking this is a necessarily a two time Canadian horse of the year. I mean, who would know that? But what did you remember about that first time you climbed a board mighty heart? The first couple of days were. Fun or fun really with that's when he started his little quirks with the eye and he didn't want to leave the barn, he didn't want to go on the wash bays. So it took a little bit of time, but once he got into his rhythm and he started galloping, you know, we could tell that, you know, he could be an okay little horse. You know, I sat at the sovereign awards a couple of times now and we were awarded a sovereign award for our queen's plate broadcast a few years back and I know how special it is for the connections to hear their name called or their horses name called. I know how much it means for the owner and the trainer and the writer of that horse. How about for the exercise rider when you heard mighty hearts name call this horse of the year two years ago? For the very first time, what was that like for you? It was it was great and it was during COVID. So they didn't have an actual award show that it was on it was televised. So I was watching it at home. And I got a lot of text messages from everybody that knows that I was involved with the horse. Congratulating me and everything in the owner and Josie and then this year, when he got it again, we were able to have the award ceremony and I was there and it was just an honor and the owner Larry Cordis. Thanked. Everybody. The horse does the running, but he thanked everybody that was involved in the horse and that was really special of him to do that for us. Yeah, didn't Josie tell me that Larry went and had glass trophies and graved and created for everybody that works with mighty heart on every level. Yeah, I got one. It just says, thank you for all the work that you've done with mighty heart and my name on it. And a list of his awards. And hopefully we can add to that this year. Is mighty Hart the best horse that you've ever sat on? That's a tough question. I think he's the most special horse to me because I've worked for Josie for 15 years and I've been on a lot of nice horses for her. But mighty Hart, I've been on since he first came into the two year old. I was the first one to sit on about the racetrack. So I think he's special in that way. And he has accomplished more than the other horses that I've been on. So I guess I'd have to say that he is, yes. Yeah, yeah, talking with des McMahon, who is the longtime exercise writer for mighty heart. You heard him just say moments ago that he's been part of that team with Josie Carroll for 15 years now. Talk about that relationship that you have with those horses. And what your responsibility as an exercise writer is every morning. Basically when they, when the horses are young at two and even three years old, we're their teachers. We want to teach them about lead changes. And going to the starting date and how to relax and just. How to be a racehorse pretty much. And we follow Josie's training schedule. She wants us to gallop. We gallop jog, jog, whatever. She's got it. Planned out to a T of what she wants..

"Got in. But when we heard the news that he wasn't in, it broke all of our hearts. We all we all like the more on the bar went down, but then like 5 or two minutes later. He got a phone call. Saying that we're in everybody in the barn lawsuit. I mean, number two, everybody was crying. Like we're all we're all close. Jerry, tell me one thing. About rich strike. The only you would know. Richard loves to be groomed, honestly. He loves he loves a brush. He's given all his body. He loves getting baths. He loves it so much that he relaxes like you can you can tell like his lip quivers. Like a dog being scratched. Yes. He'll shake their leg. I love it. Jerry Dixon is the groom for Kentucky Derby winner rich strike he is this week's unsung hero. Jerry, tell me a little bit more about you. How did you first get involved with working with horses? Well, my uncle and my grandfather, they were always around horses, my dad, he was working with horses also. The gambling man was a family. So if we didn't have anything to do with the come out to the racetrack in battle, my horses and ever since all of the kids of what grandfather come out here with you and once I got old enough, my dad gave me the chance to try to learn this trade and I'm forever grateful for him to get me the job of my dreams, honestly. There's nothing else in the world that I would ever want to do or working with horses that are working with a horse like we're strike is an honor and a privilege. And the attitude of that horse, man. It's like, how can I how can I put it? You know, most forces would have gave up on themselves in that type of position. This horse dug is more after the race. We want it more. He wasn't doing it. He still wanted to run. And oh man, you know, honestly, if I had like ten rickshaws there that was, I wouldn't know what to do. Yeah, you wouldn't be the only one. I think Eric would be wondering what on earth he has to do too with ten rich strikes. One Derby winner right now is plenty. We'll tackle the next one next year. Oh, no, no, no, no, I'm not saying I'm gonna say that I'm just saying it to have that caliber of course. It doesn't have to be a horse that wins The Kentucky Derby again. One's once plenty for me, honestly. But just to have another horse like that, man. Well, Jerry, it's a special thing for you and for the entire team over there with the Eric Reed barn and I know you are an integral part of making rich strike The Kentucky Derby winner and you are a deserved unsung hero, my friend. So thank you for being with me here on this segment this week and all the best moving forward. Keep it rolling. Yes, sir. I honestly want to thank the whole team for putting our belief in me and the horse and I want to thank the horse for believing and me and itself, honestly. There he is, Jerry Dixon, the groom of Kentucky Derby winner rich strike. He can say that for the rest of his life. And Jerry appreciate the visit, my friend. Thank you guys. You have a wonderful day. All right, then this segment, of course, brought to you by our friends at woodbine entertainment. I'll be back with more right after this word.

"I want you to know your work ethics there. I want you to, are you scared of horses? And I'm like, no, and he's like, man, there's something therapeutic about it, because Christians are, he's a veteran himself, he said there's some therapeutic. I kind of thought he was lying because I was like, what to be therapeutic about working with horses? I can't really explain it to you, sir. All I know is that it just does something to you on the inside, you know? It's a weird magical feeling. I don't really know how to explain it. Like magical. You know, these horses are my family. They depend on me, you know? We took them out of their natural state, you know, net horses are naturally in the wild, and you know, to be able to work one on one with this 1200 pound animal that can just easily have its way with me, you know, it's something special. There's a connection, there's a bond there, like that horse has to trust me. I have to trust that horse, you know? Like I said, man, magical. It's really, really all I can say about it. So now that you are working in the industry and you're working with your good friend will and you're his assistant trainer, you're doing this together. What's that experience like now? Tell me about the relationship as you're working together at the racetrack every day. That that was in itself is something special because besides working for will, he's my brother, first and foremost. First and foremost, that's my brother. His well-being comes first to me and I know that it's the same with him. When I'm going through, you know, because being sober, every day, you know, isn't a great day. You know, so we have each other to lean on. Not only just saying that, but will is extremely knowledgeable in this horse industry. And I got said, you know, I started working with horses last march, so it doesn't extremely great job at teaching me teaching me different things, how he wants things done. It's just, it's kind of like, it's work physically. Like, I still work because we get up when we're into tracking four 30, you know, and it's long days, especially on race days, but it's almost like it's not work, you know? Because not only am I doing something, I love, but I'm doing it with somebody that I love. If that makes sense. Yeah, it makes perfect sense. You know, I know this isn't where you necessarily pictured yourself as a career, being an assistant horse trainer, Mike, but you're there now and you're enjoying it and the horses are therapeutic. As you mentioned, what have you enjoyed most about training racehorses now? I love the paddock. Honestly. No, we've got most of our most of our stable as babies. We got a couple older fellas, but everybody is baby, so it's kind of like, we put in so much hard work, you know, we started with these babies when there was yearly breaking them, they've never had a saddle on them. So just seeing them develop and then walking out into the padding at Keenan and all eyes on the horse the people who are looking at you and seeing these horses go out perform. Regardless if they come first or dead last, you know, it's like, you know, it's something prideful and like, hey man, that's my horse, you know, I put bandages on this horse every day. I've told us their legs. I've sweated their legs. I remember these horses, you know, it's just something prideful about that. You know, it gives me a wonderful feeling of feeling that I've never felt before. When will and I talked on that trainer talk show, he was getting ready to saddle your very first starter, which was sergeant counselor named, of course, for Christian counselor, who is the man responsible for saving your life and saving will's life, sergeant counselor is owned by Frank Taylor, who we just talked about. He ends up finishing third at keenland in his first start. And yes, he didn't win, but boy, he ran a monster race. What was that experience like for you and for will? Honestly, man, I had to fight back the tears. I'm kind of a big guy, you know, and I like to think I'm tough sometimes and it was something it was something about walking sergeant counselor up to the receiving barn and then walking around the padding and then sitting sitting on the rail and watching our horse perform the very best that he could do that. It really it brought fear to my eyes and joy to my heart, you know? It was something beautiful, man. And like you said, man, he finished third, but we went up against Hall of Fame trainers. You know, so like, that's a win for us, you know? Let these people know that I'm a quote my buddy will hear, but we're not here for a participation trophy, you know? We're here to win some horse places, so it was really delightful man in it. It brought great joy to my heart to see starts and counselor perform the way he did. Mike, you better be careful. You're starting to sound like a true horseman. Yes, sir. Like Lowry assistant trainer to will Walden. He is this week's unsung hero, the segment presented every week by our friends at woodbine entertainment. Mike, you're very deserving all the best. Congratulations on those two years. Let's keep it rolling. And let's go get them..

"Lot. When I called you a couple of days ago to ask you if you would join me for this segment, you immediately said, how's nicks go week going? It's gone great. I can tell you. It's hard to miss. You guys have been doing a great job at it. And of course, I miss anything mix go right now. It's weird that the chapter is kind of come to a close, so I'm soaking up every bit I can. Take me back to the beginning. Tell me the story of nicks go and how this all came about. Yeah. Gosh, it's a long one. I could talk about it for days. But yeah, the 90 was born. I remember it was freezing cold. And everything. Yeah, it went pretty smooth. It was pretty textbook. And I remember he wasn't very big, and a lot of that mirrors souls are never that big. So instantly, you know, you look at what's your stud fee you paid for and then you look at what they're in front of you and you get a little bit worried. But as he started growing up through the next couple of months, he just became bigger and better and I mean, just really started looking the part. And he was a tough cookie. That's for sure. And he definitely carried on that. I think throughout his whole time, especially racing, this poor exercise rider. Every time I see those morning pictures, I'm like, oh my gosh, it feels so bad for these guys. But yeah, I mean, he was the light to have and he was a really cool horse and I mean, he's lived up.

"I couldn't say because I really do love the sales too, because I started doing that with my mom. And. I say it's probably the best of both worlds. I enjoy the most both equally. You ever see yourself doing anything beside horse racing? No. I'll do this out of the floor for my life. I started doing it, I couldn't leave it. Yeah, it's been quite a while. Already. I mean, you're a young man. It's been quite a ride already for you and I know that there are more things to come and you'll continue to build on what you've already learned. If somebody comes to you right now, Josh and says, hey, I want to try maybe getting involved with working on a farm. Or I want to get involved with the sales. What advice do you give to that person that would be trying it for the first time? Honestly, the sales is probably about that I've seen the easiest way to get into the horsing because you can just start off as a groom. You learn everything from just handling courses from there, you know, and you get the farm job offered to you all that stuff like you do really good and you learn, you keep coming back to the same people and working for the same people. It does bring out a big return for you. Because the help out on the farm, there's not a lot of people to replace the older generation that is slowly leaving it, you know. It helps like really short out on the farms right now. That I don't know. Yeah. Yeah, well Josh rennie is doing yeoman's work behind the scenes. And Josh, I think it's important to recognize people like yourself during this segment here on the show because those jobs they exist and they are critical to the success of our sport. If there aren't people like you and the team at gains weigh in the farms across the bluegrass and across the country, working with the young foals if there aren't people like you and the teams at all the sales, we can't get these horses to the races and enjoy them on Saturday afternoon. So really appreciate all your hard work and your dedication and really appreciate you being with me for a few minutes here. I know you gotta get back to work, so I'll let you go. It doesn't end. But Josh rennie really appreciate it and congrats on being an unsung hero. Yes, sir. Thank you. All right, fantastic stuff. Yeah, really, those jobs are so critical. If you don't have people like Josh out there at the ground level, the entry level, if you will. And it doesn't get more entry level than the full entering the world. If you don't have those people doing their jobs out in the cold, some days I mean, it's bitter cold and the bluegrass now. And it's like that in many parts of the country. It doesn't stop these folks who do these jobs. And they all need to be recognized. And they're all true unsung heroes. If you know somebody that you feel is an unsung hero like Josh and you want to see them recognize during these segments in the weeks and the months ahead, shoot me an email. Mike at horse racing radio .NET. Tell me their story. Tell me why you think they deserve to be recognized as an unsung hero. And I will do my best to get them on these segments. "Wonderful work behind the scenes. They do jobs that many of you might not even realize exist. And that is the case with this week's unsung hero, Josh rennie, who joins me now. Sally Ellen Hurst, our friend up at country life farm in Maryland, was kind enough to nominate Josh for this segment. You can do the same. If you know somebody that you think deserves to be recognized as an unsung hero on the segments, just email me Mike at horse racing radio .NET and I'll do my best to get them on this program over the course of the coming weeks and months this segment presented by our friends at woodbine entertainment on this Saturday morning. Josh, congratulations on being this week's unsung hero. Thank you. I appreciate it. Are you out at the phasic tipton sale? Yes, sir. I am. It just doesn't stop for you. You know, one of the reasons that sali Ellen nominated you was because of the work that you do at the farms with all of the full watch during folding season and then the rest of the year you're working at the sales. So walk me through your particular jobs and what you do. I work at gainsborough farms, I've been working there for about four years. I started there when I was in high school. And I started working for Johnny with the bird marries and about three years ago, I started short shift and like Dan follows me after high school and once I get out of school and everything, working four to 7 years and all that. So and I've been known that for about three years now and just not falling over anything else. Yeah, how did you come to get involved with that job? My grandfather actually, he's worked for gainesway for around 26, 27 years now. And he's been assistant manager and taking all the marriage to the British for him working out there across basically home a lot too. Did you go to him and say, hey, can you get me a job over here at gainesway? I want to work with some of these horses, or was it him coming to you and saying, hey kid, I got a job for you. It was kind of like almost like I started going and helping out just to help him in the fallen born and stuff like this so I could start learning something about that summer after that summer. I offered me a job like part time in between school and everything. And Larry said to me, give me a job. So are you the one that happened? Are you the one Josh that's helping with the mayor when they're giving birth or is your role do you come in afterwards after the baby's already born? Okay, so I worked like a short shift in between like the daytime crude to the night crew. So I am there. For following the mayors, if it does come to happen and I'm on call for like emergency for like the trailer and stuff like that, like to ride in the back and everything like that. What do you remember about the first time that you helped full of air? I was nervous. Because the first time that it happened, I never had before. That's kind of setback setback in March and I just did is what they said. I just it's a beautiful thing. Just like saying the babies and how it like because that always worked with the babies beforehand and stuff, but I never got to see them as far as falling in as it was crazy. My first big, I have to say. Yeah it's a special thing. When you can help bring that full into the world and welcome them for the first time. You're really the first person to lay eyes on them and hands on them. Once they're born, what's the process from there, Josh? What do you have to do? You just make my own add on one rope down and clear the nose and make sure make sure they're okay so clean. You collect collateral familiar. There to give. Can you hear me? Yeah, I can hear you. I'm David and Harrison. Let the mother and baby take place from there. Yeah. Is it important? Is it important to get the baby standing up right away? They usually come about and they come about it themselves, you know? They're usually standing up within the next couple of hours or so like next hour or two. So in terms of the babies that you fold or the mayors that you have been around and when you're on full watch and you're working with these youngsters, are there any names that we would know that would jump off the page, big names in racing that you've been around when they were really young like that? Not that I could say that young ones yet where I am so I'm so new into it. Yeah. But I've been around like a lot of really nice that have proven themselves on the track and stuff too. Yeah, it's a rewarding job. I can imagine you have to feel extremely rewarding. It has to be extremely rewarding for you when you do bring that baby into the world and you're part of that and that's a special thing. Yes, sir. It really is. Talking with Josh. I can't say that. Yeah, yeah, I believe it. Talking with Josh rennie who is this week's unsung hero. You heard him say that he works with the folds on full watch and short shifts out at gainesway. I mentioned the other side of it is what you do with the horse sale. So tell me about your jobs at the horse sales that you do throughout the year, Josh. Throughout the year, start like starting September like the September show, I worked for lanes in here in Kentucky working the horses for them. As like a showman and taking the horses to the ring and all that stuff, I love it. My up in Maryland I worked for Marshall a guy named Marshall silverman. Worked for him and Dan and Ocala worked for summerfield. And I'm just showing horses taking care of the horses grounding to help give them the best experience. For the short period of time, because I know if you've been overwhelmed then on them too. Yeah, yeah. What do you prefer? The farm side of things are the sale side..

"To value a horse when purchased out of a public auction. The insured value would simply be the auction price. But ensuring home breads can be a little more involved. How so? Well, factors such as a stud fee, confirmation, pedigree, sales and race records of siblings, even popularity of the stallion, all come into play. How closely do you work with owners in determining a horse's value? Well, the owner has a pretty good idea of the horse's value. So generally, it's just a matter of agreeing to the request and having the policy issued. "Pick against her in this race. She's going to be my pick in here and and listen. I kind of disagree on life. But i think that this might be the wore neck We old probably more differing opinions on any horse out there. At least that. I can remember them and honestly i didn't really like until the past few weeks when the truce go one the personal I mentioned she's a devil and then obviously leading up to this race. Excuse like she's forgotten. Honestly i i don't i haven't seen many people talk about you. Know it's there has been really really good on one girl who you know. We don't really know what her hercules where she might be making her next start but of course she's been the champion for so long agency. Still the face of the brad cox born on the female side so of course she's gonna take the attention to the yes side. I was just one of america's sweethearts now throughout the three year. It's all over the place. It makes sense that people would give her the attention that she deserved. They have it in. We're talking only dima troops to this year. We're talking about a horse gently could win this race. And then if she does welling up the breeders distaff sue win. We could be looking at a horse that supplants the truth from night. Champion older female. You know trophy for the eclipse award's so that's just something to think about. In my opinion. I think that you know outside amount of this has the best chance to win the breeders stuff to a staff and i'm going to buy new different big way. If she takes care of business here in terms of the breeder stuff were beaten all that. I'd never taken against without you know that Regular listener but this is a was it a legitimately run a big race Come breeders cup. Time should see him. You know complete all the steps to get there but at least you dead trees even before this race. She should handle this find. Then have a big chance of reader stuff time and now we're going to move onto We're gonna go north of the border now and talk about the great ones at buy a very nice car at woodbine Up up this weekend It if you're looking at racist other than the great ones definitely worth If you are taking a break from playing belmont churchill definitely worth playing these racist. We'll get into the. We'll get into the great one before the woodbine mile. We'll get to the canadian. International in this race is you know. It's definitely odd to see some of these horses. That are you know lower tier american grade one like lower voices that would run in grade one ungraded stakes races. But not really have too much of a chance in and then you also have some ontario bread spellcheck. One leg of the canadian triple crown last year so local horses mixed in with some interesting horses from the united states. The horse i'm going to be going with the in here is mike maker. You can't go wrong with mike maker these days and that is bluegrass parkway. He scratched out of the turf cup. But he did win the previ- rates for this at ellis park and you know only has two wins on the year. So little bit harry with that but he is coming out of a race. It did give him nice form going into this. So that's certainly something that's encouraging and at the end of the day it's mike maker. Why not take your shot with this horse. Yes this is a. This is a good race. I legitimately see all the one of these horses winning. Maybe two of them on. That's how even it is. But i bought into corelli after the spill Late august last month Even though we didn't really talk about the race I thought this was a massive step where they finally got him to just to. This is a horse who wants to go as long as he can. And they've been running a mile and sixteenth mile eight the mile all these distance that is easily probably out there wondering where the hell is more ground. I i wanna keep running. We got done in the field for this to be the great one. He gets debase. His next start is dog a huge lead to the connected because he has a big chance to win in my opinion. That's obviously going to be my pick worried about how they're going to set up. There isn't exactly much speed in here but you know that's been the case in some of his wins. I'm not especially a little take care of business. Oh hopefully he can do it again. hoping big run from corral. And now we're gonna move on to The the big race on this would woodbine card. The molson million. I'm just kidding. It's woodbine mile in this race is a very good edition of the woodbine mile. There's a lot of horses that you know. Maybe they're not Breeders cup mile win type horses but these are all horses that you hope to see in the breeders cup mile and if you if you get the half or even more this field in the breeders cup mile that makes for a field that has a lot of depth. This was definitely a tough race to look at. I was for longest time thinking. I was going to go with set-piece because set pieces just been so good And this looks like a very good opportunity for him to step out in get his grade one win that he's been trying so hard to get this year but Write a comment is a horse. That i've been picking Many times throughout the year and it just feels wrong to not pick him in this race and the the thing that is definitely very encouraging for me as he has two wins over the course of woodbine he's four four but the other two racists were on the all weather surface so i'm more looking at his two wins on the turf but those were both winds on the turf course. We're in two thousand eighteen so very long time ago but he does have the experience of the surfaces and he's been running really well in the united states kill role. Mile is something you know. We're not gonna talk about what happened there but very nice second place finish. In the maker's mark mile at keeneland turf classic churchill absolute blanket. Finish not reading into the ninth-place finish there at all. And then he ranked rate in the wise dan at churchill. Downs as well so He has three really nice races under him. And it's you don't usually say that about a ninth-place finish in a great one. But that was a nice race for him. Three nights races since the disaster the kiro and he also has a another great. Excuse me not another greatest stakes when just aac rated stakes when to his credit but to greatest six placings following that so Very nice horse likes woodbine. And i've been picking him a lot this year and i would like to see him get his grade one. Because i've been hoping to see him breakthrough at some point. This looks like his best opportunity to to this point and for me. This is going to be my biggest shot of the weekend. Picking one of the longest shots on board long this price at twenty one. That's a horse from the real town. Proves this is a really nice words and the wide open race like this..

What does that mean. When i came up with the title of the total b s. It was really about at that point in my life. I was really remember today. Went to a health crisis in. I had major surgery in You know it was supposed to be outpatient in ended up being twelve hours in so for me. I really on this journey this health journey in. That's what triggered that book about. It's not just about you know your health your physical health but it's also about your emotional health in your mental health in in about how to to align all of those things and so we don't when i wrote that book it was i you know i got into one of the things that made me become. I've lost a lot of weight. And i was talking about certain foods. Put into your body in house. Certain foods make you feel a certain way in sometimes wake up depressed when you wake up like wired and you don't know like why am i feeling like this wada times. It has a lot to do with what you're putting inside your eyes in so many really taking that time to evaluate that and so when i will total bs it wasn't just about getting sick. Physically is about getting fit mentally because we all need to get mentally fit into what i did was. I tied the two together in the united started talking about meditation. Exercise in how important it is defined defined defined things that make you feel good. It makes you feel happy. Because i was talking about this earlier. Thought can't be incapable what you're trying to create so if you're always angry all the time of yours disappointed frustrated or feeling not good then. That's what you're feeding off your energies feeding off that so really trying to laser on things that any good simple things right like taking a walk. You know Going outside just just off of walk. You know things that are free. You know that you can do to make you feel good. And i'm really just to start paying attention to those little things that you can do to start making positive change in your life absolutely beautiful stuff. I just wanted to be. I intended to be a little bit of a wise ass. Insane i guess the book had to attract a manatee. Life probably isn't for me. I mean i wrote it towards women. But i honestly feel that if you get something from it too because what i did was when i wrote that book i did a lot of interviews with men and women to get both perspectives on relationships in. It's a lot of good stuff in there. You know that you can learn about women to say how track the right man. And i'm talking about things that women need to do. And i also talked to them from a male perspective to from doing interviews with men so even say how to track right hand of it you know. It's some great information in there. Because i've had couples. You told me you know what this is. A great book wasn't trying to track but it just made me. You reaffirm certain things in a relationship that i need to pay attention to. So and i i was just being a wise guy on that but again no coincidences. This week has been a much about success but the other part of that had been about diet nutrition and whole wealth whole body wellness. Hold spiritual wellness. All this idea of all the things that go into making you a complete person and you know from sleep diet to exercise to successful stuff and then we ended last week program. We could go tonight. was about The new masculinity so the eye and understanding what it means to be a man in just understanding maleness in this world. Now so i think a book series in all seriousness. A book about how to attract the right man in in your life would be an eye opener for men to read to understand what women really want and and what what women a really looking for in a man absolutely. It's great stuff. Georgia i you for this time and insight tonight. Hope people will stop by your website and georgia would barton dot com. Check right twenty one and you. Also you still doing workshops or that has the pandemic put a show. I mean i've been so busy. I've been having so many people reach out to me. I i just truly. I'm blessed and you know why. Because i don't chase success. You know what i mean i do. I serve other people. I serve others and when you understand that your purpose is tied into serving others in solving problems for them. You will never have to worry about money. Great great message. Great final mission. I feel like This program has kind summed up to the week long week. We've been on the journey of all the mets and kinda ties them all together in a nice Nice thank you for that. I thank you for bringing a positive spirit. Woodbine Revised 2020 Stakes Schedule Starts Tomorrow
"Colony. What's being? Was Our industry starved the week presented by Stuart. Morris Equine Forum tomorrow morning, eight to ten am eastern time serious to nineteen excellent to a one stream it live horse racing radio. Dot. Net all right up at woodbine couple of stakes, races, tomorrow, Mile, and a sixteenth greed, three trillium on the all weather up there We. Get a field of eight phillies and mass. To Go The eight and a half furlongs. This was a tough one. I thought body. There's a lot of wage going here. Yeah I'M GONNA take a little bit of stab here. I'm I'm wondering. If number one super escape can steal this race. To me. It looks like she's the only true speed in the field. Maybe number seven another time WHO's shown. Very moderate speed at times, but I think if they break evenly. Super Escape is faster. She's been sprinting. Relax too I think she's better routing than she is sprinting. In fact, she's two for two on non turf surfaces. Atta Mile and a sixteenth including one for one on the all weather at Woodbine. She's got the inside post I think she's going to get out and go and her good racers good as anyone else. She's ten to one on the morning line one. I'd be most afraid of is number. Three art of almost Herat Field Emma Jayne Wilson Mason last time out. On the turf at Woodbine and She's run well on turf, or on the all weather axes been in the money, all four starts on the all weather at Woodbine, so I would expect art of almost to be the one who's closing most at super escape. I'm an both of them, but super escape at ten to one interesting. Nice price is price even better prices being at home The Keep in mind by the way the seven another time cross entered in the royal north, so we'll see where trainer Barbara minshull decides to run her daughter of money. She's cross entered in the very next race. That will talk about a minute or so here Like you I wanted to go a little bit of a different direction here I'm GonNa take the six painting for Josie Carroll. Who stretching out of for the first time old for races have been sprints. She's closed nicely. And all those Frenchies by distorted humor out of an AP in the mayor can't imagine a stretch out. It's GonNa hurt her 'cause probably bring her into the race a little earlier as well I I I thought she was a little interesting in he I. Don't know why she hasn't been lot that bugs me. All know why she hasn't been long yet in her career, but I will I'll try and get painting turns Josie. Carroll trains dollar store. Store, Jim, the six painting from me in the trillium race number nine grade to royal north six furlongs. On the turf, the outer EP Taylor Turf Course. Again. We'll see what another time does she to one in the trillium? She's five one of the morning line in this royal north we had a field of nine depending on graduates. And I leaned a number five sister peacock once again thought she might be the speed of the speed. She's got a win. Third Place Finisher tour credit in two tries on the turf at Woodbine.

Biden leads Sanders with 61% in Florida
"There looking at the numbers up there in Florida Biden just crush Sanders sixty one point nine percent to twenty two point eight percent in Illinois fifty nine point one percent this is Bob by the way both Florida and Illinois with ninety eight percent of the vote in in Illinois Biden with fifty nine point one Sanders with thirty six point one and in Arizona with seventy percent of the vote in in Arizona Byton forty three and Sanders with thirteen so right you've got those three states the only interesting thing was was the one poll that day came out yesterday let me get to it because I know it was a it was and an overall poll and I forgot which one it was there was one that came out for Florida between in a race between trump and Biden and trump did better I'll find that one the the Univision poll that we mentioned yesterday trump forty eight in in Florida by nine of forty five yeah and over Sanders by by seven points I'm trying to find the one that I saw it must've been the Reuters poll which shows Biden plus nine and that is for comes down from twenty one from the last Reuters poll but then there's another morning consult poll that shows by not twenty one I don't really believe that there's been that much movement I think Democrats have probably come to their decision the article that I was reading Esther is trying to make the point that Biden was so weak in the debate were Democrats are now moving in the other the other way I just don't see it because Sanders was back to his old thing when asked about Cuba you know and then started talking about the good things of China will talking about the good things of China this week probably isn't the right way to go no not for the corona virus probably best so again I just I don't see I see that as an out liar pulled the one that said it buying just by nine I do believe that that Democrats have the majority of Democrats have made their decision and I don't even have to look at five thirty eight makes over thirty eight now to know that you know this thing is over yeah yeah I mean there is no road to nineteen ninety one on the delegate count for for burning unless by dropped out which is not going to do you think about this too the fact that you know course they're both older there has to be very limited contact because of the situation we're in they're not gonna hold rallies trump's not gonna be holding any rallies you know probably anytime soon but this actually works for Biden being isolated yeah yeah I I think it does help you know if if he's going to a rally your you got big basically you're on death watch Woodbine so now it's one on one interviews that's it and adds until further notice that's going to go on probably the next couple of months you might say at least till June right because he's a high risk category he's not going he's you know they're not you're not gonna have any gatherings I don't know what she doing fundraisers because razor where you know the whole thing of you know twenty five hundred dollars a plate yeah whatever it is you can't be don't you can't do that you can't beat you can't be doing that and then tell other people not you're not trying win so right yeah you're not going to have those those dinners of hundreds and hundreds of people for for fundraising so it so it will be really it's going to be fascinating to see what happens politically how do you run a political campaign when you cannot in for the first time in modern history running a political campaign and I do think that especially after last night that it would be the biting people would be looking and saying okay we need to direct our rallies and fundraising not against you know nothing is against Sanders anymore this is done we need to go after trump right and I think the trump campaign would be thinking the same right now but really when you think about it you can't really start running you can't start running aggressive political ads right now you just can't do it nobody wants to hear

Discussing Leading up to Breeder's Cup 2019 (With Scott Hazleton, Nick Luck, Gina Bryce, Frank Mirahmadi)
"Tasers plus i'm working came about ten years ago now i think it was wins and jato is still running goodyear to come i think she won the this stuff yeah and so i missed her agonizing defeat but yeah great to be back we mortar place kind of standing here thinking why do i live why do i live in the UK suv amen code and i i try to live here as much as i possibly can and you've been you've been stateside a ton the last several months skull and comparing notes as to how many days spent away from home this year i was beaten by you you will have someone nearly two hundred i think about one hundred twenty six months for me my very long suffering wife is just that if you need to pass assistant i'm happy to come along make the coffee whatever i'd say it's a pretty good gig you got going on out here on a day like today looking over the mountains perfect temperature top class horses cantering i you all is well with the world now and ideally from from here on in the next seventy two hours through saturday tonight get them all around safe and make this make this the the idyllic session that it should be the from from art lips god's ears as we say i wanted also to to the dubai experience right the last the last several years the the international i scott i mean lucky enough to where it we've got a royal ascot gina as well jeanine scott on the same royal ascot show now skull comes over and does a great job for fatigue as well then dubai and dubai together on on that show so yeah trips have been right i mean you can't get rid of me and to be honest with you our our our first encounter we always have we have this connection our first encounter which bad pinch is not here for this story because we're all together was the two thousand seven breeders cup at monmouth park it was my first big remote for HR TV it was was your first go second chauffeur ESPN yeah and it was lafitte lafitte was during the winter cycle presentations i show and we somehow not surprisingly found each other and managed to hang out more than a few times it was of course that week it was often oblique experience that we well saturday and sunday uh about friday and saturday but we're not talking about the weather though you're you guys were well the rain was what i call crying baby rain you think naturally has to stop but it never does danger this week that was is that was as frustrating a scenario as you'll ever going to have around racetrack it was gorgeous every single day that i got i got to meet scott hazelton think either third how i was blessed and we've not looked back since twelve years later here we are that was i i was there broadcasting for for me that was actually my first that was the first season of the show when i was alone was two thousand seven and broadcasting from from the from john heinz office that compound here and the show was four o'clock at that time four to seven so i was there all day and i basically ended up answering phones and helping people tickets and and really i was always met the days i that's one of my fondest memories let's get some let's get some thoughts and nick i always rely on you for international purposes however you've been covering all the lead ups so you know your opinions can go far beyond the the euro's but from an introductory stand point some of the horses this year that that are are kind of new and of course we had not a bayton switch but magical and up disappearing at the last minute and it was frustrating because she was ready to the sun aim she'd have been the marquee name as she'd been here given i welsh around last year and the season she's hiding she went on champions are champions weekend but she's not so on we go there isn't not substan- aim if you'd like to to hang the european challenge on but it scott some debt and there are plenty of hoses who legitimate i think probably the most interesting pair of horses is old persian and anthony van dyck see whether they can whether they can let down to bricks and mortar on the on the turf in the mile and a half race and whether they can expose any shortcomings in in bricks and mortar stamina i don't if you saw the clip on on twitter of me accosting chad yesterday it was a good natured exchange i said to my overcomplicating it he said you always complicate everything i think the the influence i was supposed to draw was that breaks it was just a good horse and i i think he'd be impervious to distance but i i think there's a dealer confidence in the ballydoyle camper van dyken can step up i think you'll have to step up a bit even though he's won a dobby and finish that in an irish champion stakes i think he needs another little step foot but they seem to think he's had the perfect preparation and he's by no means an afterthought they've had this race lined up for him since the summer and that always when we get to this juncture very often we've talked about horses that at the last set again they said oh let's go and and those horses invariably don't run well exactly so it's it's great that he's he ain't going great record in the race he's probably comparable to one one or two of his winners atn equivalent stage of their career he's he's legitimate and i can't seem finishing out of the out of the front path really i said to michelle when i was chatting to a yesterday on on the TV gee breakfast show and i'll say it again if old persian doesn't get any love from the batter's he's probably worth passing because on his full from your last year and his form for made on earlier this year a mile and a half on firm turf he's a he's a very good host but he does need to take a leap forward from the canadian run which was just okay even though he won the triple digit bar though did he not a one can rier you can run fast but just there wasn't much depth to the race fair enough for the work that i want to bring up to is a lou neck the ville de mar hicks runner because if desert encounter doesn't make that spectacular run at woodbine doesn't doesn't he show up here with a little bit of a little i'm chad i'm chairman of the desert encounter fan club only only a really ardent admirer of his exploits think he would have any kind of a show in anna breeders cup too so i think he's a show plan alaniz maybe he's honest horse who has proven that he's effective in north america but i think that's about us boulder cases i can make fair enough at an eugene you sort of perked up at the mention of his name all right yeah i actually agree with nick on the on the breeders cup turf but i just saw time christmas go past this morning on friday i think that's pretty amend as a bit of a lottery that race and they're coming down the hill and you want to get a good break and be drawn well and and get on with proceedings but the europeans quite well drawn in that race seems to be quite a few in with chances is one that's really so stamped his authority on the five furlongs sprint division at home it's a nice little horse his knee and actually when you see him go past he's not going to take the i really but i think he could be quite interesting and he's in a good spot there archie watson does really well with his juvenile he's bringing over a runner and band practice i think it's been joined in two so you'd expect him to had to be sharp and out and and another one with a with a chance but i think the juvenile houses some sometimes the race is that europeans can can occasionally pinch on the turf and there's a few interesting ones this year lucky though that with it being it's a different this year because this is only the second year of the juvenile turf sprint they had but they didn't it wasn't consecrated until she was able to race on the on the go a bit but having it around the band i think that the wesley horses have the advantage of their speed they out of the gate they get that position on the turn and then while you know it's it's game over it's not what you know the european i used to i think camario win if she breaks she's i know that's the that's the if i honestly think she's she couldn't it took a role of keeneland didn't that it took a rule of the stretch kaitlyn and then they're not gonna come back here i don't think we saw last year pledges hose just came out and blasted a multiple that was a different type of course it was it was i guess but i i don't know i think she wins if she breaks success good chances we'll drive drive yeah it's interesting they've taken a ali to wolverhampton to try and chain around the bend and get used to that because you know they you say they all going to encounter different different conditions today sir friday and they've only been running on the straight it's tough five gallons they've had to practice changing awesome getting out quickly and coming around a bend if you were there's there's one thing that unites ceos like a ali in the juvenile turf sprint and a host like anthony van dyke in turf is that this fixture has been on the top of their agenda since the summer so you're talking about hostess who are being specifically targeted at the breeders cup there's to die yet would be another one in the long race for fillies on the turf the to your own race on the tough and raja verion before she even one and finish second on an island in the moya he was saying i want to go to california with an east had some success with osa finishing placed in breeders cup races before they they have three hoses who have been typically targeted at this fixture right from the word go this year

Tormenta over that group would be a real story book ending the career of our next guest Jockey Eurico Rosa Silva who joins us for a few minutes here on in the gate you've been around logging enough to know that forty four to one shots don't come in every day especially in grade one races so what was going through your head as you powered down the lane to win the Woodbine Mile Tormenta when when I was on the race what's compete under moment I was not thinking winning or or lose us me and him we both doing the weekend through two hundred race right and was completed on their moment or so folks all we want it could wire I you had not much experience with that horse before the Woodbine Mile I think but he had been a turf sprinter last year at age three free so what do you think made trainer Gail Cox decide to stretch this gelding out a little yes I think falling these horse he used to go to the elite before and he was a sprinter and you know they start taking him back and he learned how to relax and then they stretch him out and I think that was the key for him you know to learn how to relax and today he is I can say that they did very good job because he's he's not a horse to ride you know he relaxed that easy for you as we talked about an are open you're retiring basically at the top of your game made now the right time the right time for me is that I'm young to start a new business and my kids I really really want to focus on my family you've said that you grew up without family and you don't want that to happen to your three young children including a nine month old daughter congratulations what do you mean that you grew up without family when Noah's keeping my mom was always working I completed grew up Foodie much without my father and that's almost could create a black hole inside yourself you know as much I want to win before the races and I used to have a Lotta anger and I know in fewest I work on myself and that came from being a kid that most of the time King or in the street you know trying to make a leave and when I started understanding more that and I see how important for the keeps to have their baroness supporting them when they're growing up you know and because they didn't have that and also I want to enjoy seen my son my daughter having that with me you know he's not been better for myself I can say that when I'm not tired and I can take my keep to the park and play with them is very subtly fight for me because I raised for the time here and take a lot of promo body and he's very high from to do that well two things first of all I hate to break this to you but eventually those kids are going to become teenagers I have one and it's not really going very well so yes enjoy it all now while you can the other thing is you said you're racing here and you know as a top okay you'd have less trouble than less successful jockeys would booking mounts if you follow the money during colder months let's say to Florida to Kentucky but you've not real he done that it seems I believe once turned down a Breeders Cup ride to raise woodbine instead that day so what is your thought process for how you have set your skin Joel in the wintertime people think oh he's home he's that but you know I really work in myself I have entertained that work inside myself to come through to the recall you showing up on the track you know and he's the kind of really Really set the myself down and work on the brain I I really I never stopped working on the tire year I'll take two weeks like I am free as I'm not going to do anything and just deal with the family other time I use the time that I have time to work with myself inside myself oh jockey Eurico Rosa Dasilva joining us here on in the

Early Thoughts Before Pre-Entries
"Gossip Good Morning Good Morning Steve. How're you doing good to be back home glad to whatever you want you know it's open open mic DOC whatever is ready and of course you follow gusts through everybody's followed gusts forever from day one on at the races and got a couple of plays maybe for the weekend gus but some some early thoughts before pre entries as we look Toward Cup it's always talked before pre entries but breath just looking at the races exciting exciting racist to get excited about it I think cameras just said I think the sprint and the dirt mile probably the two right now but I mean we have three solid juvenile's with noon Dennis moment eight rings and and Max Bill which I think three of those are very quality horses and just looking to see how these fields shape up but I mean I'll see you know some great opportunities in those fourteen racist for sure what we haven't obviously we haven't had a chance to talk anything on a consistent basis but what do you like to do when it comes to terms of a ticket structures and and focus in how many how many multi-race wagers which one's the utilize the most I'll tell you what you know you get these big fields I had the most success with exactly is in doubles to tell you the truth sometimes simple the up keep it simple and You get I mean you get a lot of value and those plays with the you know arch fields in and actually pick a couple of wide open races I usually focus on that I do tickets with the you know the picked force and I like to find at least one single maybe to deepen the other one and maybe spread that's what I kind of look forward definitely a single though in the pick four pick five I definitely need one host but I think even the pick threes you know the pick threes are they paid handsomely in the last few years as well but I think people you know who spoke with the exact in the doubles I mean you can get some real value if you if you got a good opinion onto racist back to back you can get paid well and we were in fact last week with Jeff Siegel this came up and when I was asking Jeff about his preparations and when it comes to the a ticket building and and we'll remind everybody that as much time as we spend handicapping the gotta spend a hundred percent the maybe not maybe not practical to spend as much time building the tickets but there's gotta come a point Wednesday Thursday where you you've got a pretty good idea of of the horses you're going to key around take a break from I'm from the handicapping and put pen to paper and write down the your perspective wagers and budgeted out and and you know take a look at the you know once we get the announcement I think it's on the twenty third by the way runs day the twenty third will be the race order official order announcement the Breeders Cup has a tendency to the tinker with it based on on the way the field size shape up you know look at that structure highlight the spots where you've got your strongest opinion and then back up on either side of those strong opinions if you're a mother erased player and you know we keep suggesting you know if you if you typically pick four player okay fine you're going to play your series of fake force but this is where you take a step back to and play more pick threes and the doubles and I I I think it's advice that I try to drive home every single u a year that you you don't WanNa have some of your best ideas the horses that end up winning that you had a good feel for an and then you didn't cash because there's some upset in the third or fourth leg of a pick four and you you didn't leverage your good idea as strongly as you might have oh I totally agree with that you know like you said once the the race orders come in just pick your spots we have your strongest opinions and then you go from there I mean that's I mean horse players nightmare there were your your ten to one shot twelve the one shot comes in and then you're single maybe a three to one shot you know doesn't come in the last leg and you didn't have anything on on on your your strongest opinion the price that's that's tough pill does Walla sometimes no doubt gusts will obviously you know get a chance to direct people toward you and and the analysis at at Brisbane that and Talk Again Cup Week maybe you know pick out a a a spot that you know the to discuss what what he did complain of of late how much keeneland action you taking it definitely on the weekends for sure and dabbling a little bit during the week I mean some great racing the weather's been fantastic and big fields they're coming to an end here this weekend but got a couple of plays today actually Keelan let me here let me let me see got hold on I got the where's where's my keeneland Friday Thursday AK with Saturday I keep the Friday about what's going on down believable there's so much there's so many things here did you play Gulfstream yesterday by the way did you play the pick five thing a little bit I did I did and got knocked out pretty early believe it or not you would not price horse which is Kinda it'll happen yeah oh yeah it was over quick so it's pretty full paid well for me though for the for the amount of low prices that were that were at three was a signal and the third leg so I know it's funny that that was the that was the horse that gave the opportunity to to to tip toe to turn it into a pick four but yet I do get the sense a lot of people got tripped up either on the in the first leg or the last leg where the two spots we're GONNA WE'RE GONNA get the one side of the other well let's talk about Qinglin go ahead what are you got today seven just my best friend today force MS coming out of the Woodbine Mile Bill Seventy eight to one mile with a chaining hill started the outside somehow he he maneuver beautifully coming into the turn but down the stretch is totally got shut off had nowhere to go I thought he had nice I made a move just didn't have enough to go this horse has been running good all year up at Woodbine five draws the five here which is which is ideal nine to two is very fair price is a loaded racist could be a stakes race disallowance this allowance race but I like plot I think he's going to get a good trip there's enough speed in front where he's going to be right in stock and right behind I mean he's faced some nice horses I think this is the time to to get in this at somewhere of now ninety two would it be beautiful if we can get that and I think we will because you know the outside you have a few horses that are going to take some money especially Colin Road for for Michael Maker Jose Ortiz that was gonNA take somebody coming out of ah graded great three but ms I think is the wholesome and a key on all over in in starting reporter and race seven and Connor Murphy for whatever reason Connor Murphy does not does not draw money and wins I mean he wins plenty does a good job interesting to see Mark Glatt come to keeneland souter shows up here yet pick source interesting ski Churchill last time kind of finished pretty decent but it's a nice horse was nice races earlier in the year so and you got Roselle Rosario on board into feature the feature very nice race today again the the greatest Devali view fulfilled I think by horses winter sunset four eight to one on the morning line think might get a couple of clicks down I mean she's versatile I don't know if she wants to go nine furlongs I think she kinda flattens out at nine furlongs the mile amount of sixteenth which is I think this is her her best distance coming off a win at Indiana ground at any grant she's got a nice post and she's just a nice trip there there's some speed lined up to the inside I think she can get I run and I mean the twelve is going to be flying late this lady the prince a lot for Baltistan she's eight to one I think she comes down from that I can see here making a big move middle of course coming down the lane but winterson that's it for me eight to one would be great I think she gets I run on on on the closers and should sit a nice trip there again for channing hill it's now and Bhartiya earlier to Mardi landed on winter sunset yeah I'm not sure what the price I think she might down from Chad you've got to chat horses that are Ya Chad takes money like you you saw yesterday focus group was was really over bet yeah I like him but it's too crazy I'll tell you what I have a bomb in the second race so a bomber I'm GonNa take just fly the one horse abstinent for Ian Wilkes make third start first time on on the turf going to turns Bravo Bravo couple of wins from six starts the meat this horse broke the last couple of times I starts his career broke out think the inside post and Bravo might be able to as well she's fifteen to one in the morning line you might get fifteen twenty to one hundred Meta take a flyer on her and also gotTa pick for tonight at down coming

At the Races With Nick Tammaro
"Churchill getting started would bind with they're the first really too big weekends they also course got the international later in the meet later in the fall and and that brings in some international shippers this woodbine mile just the mile either northern dancer the more you look at it. I thought was was was intriguing and there's plenty of other a lot of stars on the card including Holy Khaleda and pink Loyd. WHO's I I for a horse? That's one like twenty seven in a row. Nobody seems the talk about him or pay much attention to him. Bob Tillers streaking sprinter and here's a streaking sprinter victim Rio depends on where the sprint destination is. I think might Tapei at times but shop racing form a yes to the windows. Definitely Pink Floyd is is really sort of a marvel in terms of how he's performed well routinely I of course needed him to at least be third in this race last year in the contest and finished fifth so the pink floyd stop it will be nowhere near Wreck Stale Ontario and so his chances tomorrow we'll probably increase exponentially. He's in the early. They put the bold venture early on the card actually in fact when I went to the stakes together and put them up Derby Trail Oh. I didn't even look that that early on the card so I didn't even have to go back in fact I don't know if I did go back and put it up but there are a couple couple of very nice horses here including Carlin's honor the Jack Oxley Breezy York good old Yordan approaching half a million dollars for a chiefs would and Stewart Simon you know a lot of your a lot of your local players in the sprint scene but pink Cloyd is now twenty one twenty six and it really was late last year September October that he started to show some some frings signs of tiring and Kinda sputtered out at the end of the year could. Could he be beaten in here. I don't think so no it looks like he's he's back where he needs to be and I don't really know I guess other than Caroline's honor who's supposed to be particularly big threat to him in the spot so he he should get the job done. I mean it's always nice to see good. Horses do Well York than obviously was in much better form coming into this last year having run a good second pink Floyd Royd individual and and that was also during a period of time where pink floyd was having a really hard time getting out of the gate so he's a little ornery for a seven year old gelding and he had a little bit gate trouble really about four or five races in a row going into last year's bold venture he he's not he still not they really particularly the obedient or when it comes to getting out of the gate or being trained for it but he's definitely a little bit better spot with that right now so I think given that he's he's inform and should be sitting right off of the of the pace. If you worked in may be line to the front end. I think he should be okay before we talk about the Canadian the end the grade to which does start the cross country and will incorporate the pebbles and the nightcap at Belmont Nixon thoughts about last week at Belmont. We talked about this Jockey Club Derby and oaks and the Grand Prix. I talked to Andy on Tuesday. The Grand Prix was oddly contest than I thought but some some quick hits on opening the opening salvos at Belmont. I guess guess I'll try and keep it as charitable as possible. Given I took my shots at it last week but I think they played out largely. How we expected decide thought was a pretty impressive winner of the Jockey Club oaks overcoming? I think by all counsel was a pretty negative pace setup and winning is much the best running down Wonderman who I thought probably got a little bit more the run of the race and the American contingent as we expected in that race as well as the Jockey Club Derby were pretty much no shows and it could also be that the American continuing is pretty thin out by now. We'll talk about the pebbles and a little bit but the pebbles is going to be the ninth race for one hundred thousand dollars or more for three year olds fillies on turf going back to June sixth six and that's insane so the ranks of American horses that are ready to go a mile and three eighths early in September. We're really not very not very robust and and that proved out on the lady side and I thought Spanish mission I I actually thought he was totally out of position and thought that he was about to have a Jamie Spencer Special before he was able to overcome it and get the job done so a little bit. I know that the horse was capable of overcoming his writer. I I would imagine he he should be one of the better distant sources that we could potentially see over here next year given that he's going to be off now until the spring and there's just obviously connections that have problems shipping over the Grand Prix North American Jockey Club invitational brought to you by whatever most pretentious name of all time that was one of the most oddly run races I've ever seen first of all. I don't know how the hell everybody knew. Marconi was winning that race for fun and then to watch the riders of both realm and roaming union gather a hold of their horses so strongly almost as if they were waiting for Marconi to catch up and take the lead after he blew the break so that he could go one sixteen flat it was basically sort of the epitome of what we complain about left and right about American American dirt racing right now and you know in this day and age of sort of turf occasion of American racing where everybody points to turf races races are run like turf races. It's almost as if one horse makes the lead all the other guys say okay well. They're the pacesetter we're just GONNA go ahead and sit back and wait for them to come back to us and the majority of the time on the dirt that just doesn't happen even so shockingly Marconi was able to set a pedestrian pace and and went on with it and I I obviously would not have been a big fan of his at the price he went off often. We talked about how it looked like a bit more competitive race on paper the other todd pletcher trainee your to blame. I thought ran pretty well. He was able to stop the pace on the inside but you know I don't y horse like roaming union was in there if he wasn't GonNa GonNa contest the pace especially given that he's from connections like Michelle Navin who generally have a pretty decent idea how to win dirt racist so that was is a little bit of a head scratcher. you know look my personal opinion is that if there's any thought given to this turf triple. I really hope that same amount of money is committed to a dirt program and trying trying to incentivize horsemen to get there and run on dirt more frequently really try and build up the claiming ranks again because it's kind of embarrassing through the first three days of racing. I'm I'm sorry through the first three days of Racing Belmont there were seventy eight horses total entered to run on dirt and there are over seventy eight horses enter to run dirt in the first day at Churchill so I if the same number number of races and and that's that's not good. That's a big big problem that creates a big problem in the winter so that's my hope for it as it is. I guess we'll see probably a little bit better from Spanish mission in the Diese Lisa next year well we turn to Belmont today and into the weekend a couple of very good maiden races actually as part of that card and maybe we'll touch on them but let's let's look at the cross country pick five and it is comprised of of the three three of the stakes would bind the Canadian the mile and the northern dancer that you know you the top of your head. You wouldn't have thought it the three of them were as complex as actually I think they are and then the pebbles and the turf sprint claiming nightcap the eleventh at Belmont so let's start with the Canadian you know this is an interesting field the and really they'll competition. Idea should probably go off a pretty solid favorite. I don't really see how tactically you could make a real stand with her and she's a horseshoe. Obviously needs to lay back and make one run and you know those types generally at the mercy of the pace and this race does not look like it's going to have really any pace speak of so so she's going to have to overcome that now. I will say that you'll Rosario getting back on board to me feels like a very good thing. It does seem like she's just a little bit better horse when he's John Her but now the flip side of that is that we know Joel style. He's GonNa take her back and let her make one run so I mean they're they're going to. There's going to have to be some pace in here that you can't really foresee and I guess the hope is that Dixie moon and or starship do believe maybe show a little bit more speed than they have before. That's if you're back competition of ideas with any great fervor because obviously what this is shaping up as a situation where Holy Helena has a big tactical advantage on the other favorite and and she's been effective at Woodbine in the past. You look good winning the dance smartly last time Jimmy was giving a little bit of time since and I think she's a horse that that will really get the run of the race and and that's GonNa make her toffee. This could be a situation where on your your pick five. You're really leaning on those two pretty heavily and maybe you could give a little bit of a nod holy Helena on one one more additional ticket. I did want to try and make a case for to Riga and my hope is the Tyler Galileo. Maybe a little bit more aggressive with her than Johnny. Velazquez was was last time he finished just length and a half behind the competition of ideas did get into a little bit of trouble amazingly. She got into trouble in the three-horse rates which it happens of course and with a little bit cleaner run maybe second off the off the layoff off the ship in we can see some improvement grim oceans been a little the little laid back with her she she ran on July twentieth didn't work until August thirty first but might be one of those horses that can stay fit without doing that. I I'm always very very in tune and was looking at his horses in these kind of scenarios as they they generally overperform relative to their odds so I'm GonNa go ahead and include Theresa's well the and will include could starship jubilee more than likely those two has backups because I think they each offers some appeal at what should be better prices than the two chalks should note that ah Jimmy Jerkins after sending Holy Elena opt for the dance smartly basically is as left her there and oh my Gosh the stronach trainer but my Woodbine what is yes thank you Mike Doyle. Mike Doyle has been handling and Jimmy is on TV with seth deny after after precision is one and he told the story about Jimmy said he got the notification is it is stable mail all that Holy Helena had worked Labor Day weekend and so gets the notice he opens it up and Airy Jerry Sees Holy Elena six longs one eleven and three Jimmy said got on the phone to this is Mike what's going on up there and he said I really don't worry though or she did it easy. Did it easy the track was the polly was slick. It was cold or whatever yeah what eleven at three and you know what I did. I brought up with Jimmy that great story that is his father told about Bo purple and going out to Hawthorn for the Hawthorne Gold Cup on Tuesday the race as was Saturday and on Tuesday he gets a call from a Chicago sportswriter and said Jerkins. I wanted to ask you for comment about outvote purples work and said what about it. He says well he he he went a mile in one thirty. Two and three Korea broke the track record or mile. I think he went to violent at eight and broke the track record. What what forty seven forty six shades or something and and and Jerkin said you know? I'm sure he'll be fine and sure enough. He went out and won the Gold Cup but that was funny. One one eleven and three
