"Horse, dead or alive. In history, the present that you wish you could have written or worked with. Well, that's pretty easy. And I assume you mean ones that I never did work with or get to know. But secretariat was a horse that had a massive load of positive think more taxes connected with him, which meant that he had an intense desire to go into pain rather than away from pain. And whether people know it or not, secretariat when he went in the starting stalls and the two rails in there were along his sides. He would fight those rails and lean over and literally lose 15 or 20 links. Which is described actually in the movie where they talk about secretary would sit back in the starting gates and laser on, but it wasn't that he was lazy. It was that he felt that pressure and went into that pressure. Yeah, they never understood. I talked to the trainer several times, and he didn't want to hear from me at all. And I don't blame him for that. He's training the number one horse in the world. And I could have helped him, but he would lose ten, 15, 20 links at the beginning of each race. But if you go back and watch the video, there were only 5 horses, I think, in the third race of the Triple Crown. The Belmont. And he got permission to go in last. And the starter was told. I'm told now. That if the other horses are standing good while he's still coming in, you punch the button. And that's what happened. And if you watch the video, you can see that they immediately start the race before he's actually held the back closed on him and closed in there. And he wins the race by 70 links or something like that. It was an incredible 31. 31 links. Yeah. It was an incredible race. But the instant that they started the race, I knew he had to be the winner because he didn't lose his ten to 15. And he came here to California and got beat he was beaten here in California. The wood. Wood memorial. Was that it? Anyway, he lost so much. He just couldn't make it up in the one race that he lost. But..

We'll hear from him throughout the morning. And of course, you'll hear him live doing derby broadcast as well. Joe looking at some of the weather people were complaining about the rain. The wettest derby on history, obviously was last year. Matt says he doesn't like we'll get that. It's already it was raining when I came in. So was it really? All right. What do you think? Coldest RB was that we ever had. I would say in the forties, close thirty six thirty six degrees. It was on may fourth nineteen forty may fourth nineteen fifty seven. We had the coldest really chilly. That's cold. Field. That's like winter. Now, if you wanna go to the opposite end of the spectrum, the warmest derby we ever had that was back in nineteen fifty nine. What do you think temperature was for that one one hundred five close ninety four? Yeah. It felt like a hundred with the humidity back in nineteen fifty nine. I don't know if they had the air conditioning that we have today. Oh, yeah. So it was hot all over. And then when it comes to frozen precipitation on may sixth nineteen Eighty-nine sweet was observed at the derby. And if you're looking at I guess if you wanna play the percentages out of the one hundred and forty four days, sixty eight of those experienced rain at some point during the day that's about forty seven percent. So we're right about half in half. Maybe we'll look out next year. We'll get the rain. But again for those folks that are coming in. I mean Churchill Downs is built such an immaculate facility right now that everything is just about undercover with the exception of those few places you sit whether it's no covering if you're standing in the paddock, obviously. Yes, that's not a place. But I do not think that's going to stop the debauchery. That's about to take place. No, nothing. Does just be drier in most places. That's.

"Thanks for hold on the line. Mark welcome to the show. Thanks for taking my call guys. It's probably the six time I called him, and you probably don't get a lot of compliments on selections, but I called in right before the Tampa Bay derby, and I was high on win win win. And you flat out said Tacitus and after the race. I looked back and said, wow. That was a great pick great price. And I was so with all the Wood Memorial. But I'm gonna go back to what get your opinion on win win win, you know, going into the bluegrass and closing into a traffic couldn't close that weekend. And then you know, your opinion on that obviously Tacitus bake shop. But also code of on if the horse ruins, what do you think? So kinda the two closes in the race. I know they're gonna be prices, but the favorite like we said it probably be five one anyway. But if you guys would choose for women KOTA would be great. I I don't really like when we win. I think he's going to be one of the if not the wiseguy horse. I like code of honor a lot. I think quote von will be right there. He'll be. He'll be somewhere behind Tacitus on my top four selections. I think he's definitely a player in the race. But I'm not a win win v at. Yeah. I was more of a fan after the race. I definitely agree with the consensus that he made up ground on a on a first three days of Keeneland where no horse did really in become bliss. It's done. I will say looking at at the sheet. He's he's going the wrong way that he got a really big number in the Pasco the Tampa Bay derby same kind of trip somewhat in the bluegrass or. Yeah. The bluegrass some some trouble. He was wide no match though, really for the top horses. And then the bluegrass he was no match for a coma either. So it some point you look at the data takes uses running out. Now, all that said, we know we can come running late. And if he ends up not being wiseguy ish, and is a big price. I wouldn't want him to beat me underneath a horse like Tacitus who I've been. Fortunately, you know, Anthony. Really come around to. But you know, he's he's not a horse that I'm gonna be looking to, you know, hook up with talks. I don't like whereas other bombs. I'm more liberal than using them with logical orces. Appreciate that. And just talking about Phillies. But champagne anyone probably run in the oaks any thoughts on that one. "Seven three three seven sixty six sixty six Chris more with you on a Saturday afternoon in New York here till Yankee baseball at six twenty five we've got plenty of going on. Boy, we got warm ups for the Kentucky Derby in terms of you know, racing season being in full bloom. We got the Wood Memorial at Aquidneck. We got the Santa Anita derby out in California. We got the blue grass stakes and Keeneland in Lexington. Kentucky all going on later this afternoon as well. As the final four you got the big WWE event tomorrow, and you got a Mets win. It's in the book as they like to say interesting that they had five solo home runs, but he was the Braxton single that won them the game. So five runs on five homers and a single by Brockton bringing in Conforto the difference in the game. And they end up in a very happy mood. With canot coming through late, and obviously the polar bear coming through late as well. And he seems to be their emotional leader. Now, he's taken over sort of the Aaron judge role of of kind of being big strong imposing and having the right attitude. Not wanting to really be a star. But. Being leaned on. So the Mets improve the six and two. They beat a division rival nationals now three and four and. Very impressive considering their bullpen failed them. They blew leads. They got behind five three with only six outs left in the game. And they only ended up needing three those outs because they didn't bat in the bottom of the nights because they were already ahead. So free runs in the bottom of the eighth is a great way to get the taste of the Thursday opener out of their system and that game is quickly forgotten. And it's a reminder just how fluid the baseball season is right. It really is a reminder of just how fluid it is. And how quickly you go from. Worrying.

I wanna give it like say chocolate kisses to I think that she could have she's going to be a player today in there at five to one with Tyler gaffe Leone for Mark Cassie. She's she's always she had a rough trip in the also bodies here last year. Maybe might have been the best that Lear bobbled at the start might have been the best one in that in that field last year. But you know, how this is racing longshot. I give a horse a chance or here's horse. Doug, O'Neill's, biz wax. She's kind of one of those kind that just seems like next time next time. But if she gets a decent trip chocolate kisses just beat or two links the other day, and and she could be a player in here too big price. But I'm gonna give CHAD'S horse that the nod in here feedback, I know. Say he's chatting are pretty close. And he's always liked this horse allot, whether she can get the trip. She's a, you know, only has two starts that's going to be experienced factors going to be somewhat going against her. I feel like I should be one of those rooms where my name's time and every time, but thirty theories note, you know, I was thinking about it. Luzia derby. They run the big race at six weeks before the derby. Three year old was a derby horse. What would be that? Couple races last step that you do say from. I the March out until you got two little you could raise anywhere, you know, to set it up on a timing thing. Would you wanna run three weeks four weeks out like the bluegrass are three weeks out? Like, the Arkansas jury five weeks, the Florida derby, you know, what do you feel ideal? And I'll give you my I was thinking about it. I don't run like in the Louisiana derby six weeks out and then come back and the Arkansas derby grew we dot maybe go. Sixty seventy percent effort kinda like what street sense did in that bluegrass. All what's wrong with three. Oh, you just getting a workout in? If I'm not near a radio or I don't have XM in this talk. He just say must've what you guys comment on that. Because I don't know what kind of horse yellow with how he's acting. What about you at? Yeah. I mean, it's based on the horse. I would say. Based on everything I've seen her no disrespect to the home team at fairgrounds, but six weeks with would be tough for me to to take. I definitely am a fan of the three four weeks. I think the closer the better, and I'd be inclined to get the break before those races, Allah, Barbro or horse. You might do. Holy Bull, Florida derby and skip the fountain of youth that that appeals to me more with the race closer to the derby than six six six or seven weeks out. They go, Tom. Thanks, guys. "And when he came back in and trained the way he had been training, and maybe even a little better. We felt felt like someone was a good opportunity for him. And and he was. Able to capitalize. So thrilled about that. He's a little bit of a horse that has to be kept a task. Yeah. You know, I thought it was interesting talking to Johnny afterwards. You know, that that look like, you know, you might be getting a little tired. But his his take on. It was that, you know, he just simply kinda got lost a little bit Neidl when he when he made the lead. And if you watch the Gallup out, he never. In other words, was never even truly by him. So I think there is a little more in the tank there. Well, and we're gonna talk about a bunch of other horses quickly got about six seven minutes. But I do want to ask you because we hinted at it when we talked at the beginning of the year and even late last year. How much of these horses peaking now was by design or just by just by the kind of the kind of physical horse. You got the slower developing or horses that work to show their best till they they went around ground. Yeah. I think I think, you know, really, you have to take every case case by case, and you know, with with outshine, and and spin off, you know, their horses that ran it to needed some needed some time offer some baby issues, and so now to come back in the, you know, the timing worked out well for for for them this spring, and then you'll have other horses like cutting humor that that. I think is just you no matter kind of putting it all together ran well in his first few raises. But you know, you could tell he's one that was still sort of figuring things out. So you know, you you just have to kinda take it as it comes. And and you know, I've I've said oftentimes sometimes the worst thing you can have is really hot hand, and in January and February, and I know that from personal experiences, well that you know, some, but sometimes you can't prevent it from happening either. So, you know, it's Just just. a you got to take it as comes. But we feel like, you know, the last last month or so is going really well for our stable, and you know, hopefully continues. Well, you got opportunities for continue with at least at least four that. I can count between over deliver outshine current and soul alive. And did you did you enter today with with over deliver? No, actually, we entered current in the Florida derby, what are you doing? So talking to Mike Repola, you know, he's a New York guy. He's the word a couple of times he he'd like to go to the wood with over deliver for the Bayshore. We haven't decided for sure yet. We're gonna see how breezes this weekend. I think the worst train training. Really? Well, we'll see how the breeze goes. I'd say there's a, you know, an eighty twenty chance they'll show up in the would and then talking to Wellman this morning. But like we're in a position to take a three inch voted to the dirty with current to meet originally decided was going to go the glue Gress, and he'd still may. We'll see how the draw goes. But that's sort of what we're thinking felt like it was we're taking a look at how about that. All right. So we we that's Baffert trick. The you decide you decide at the last minute that this is the horse that belongs here. And that's the one I'm sending. All right. I I love it. How about? How about so alive so alive still on target for the bluegrass the end kind of been our plan all along the last, you know, six weeks or so that broke his maiden impressively chemo, and we know he likes to track they're trained well up to date you and we wanted to get back on a on a surface that we know he likes and figured that. We take a shot at rest. And did we talk about China? China's still set for the would correct he'll bruise this weekend targeting the Wood Memorial..

"Exactly. That's that's listen. That's why I didn't put any of these words in my top twelve I could very easily put, you know. Hi Kelly on there. And he could he could be a he could be turned horse. I mean, you don't know. But he's got to prove it. I mean, you talk about a perfect setup. I mean, the fact that the case where. Much better goes out there, and he just blasts out there and forty four and two and one oh nine in one. You know, they call home in twenty six and change. So yeah. Of course, it set up for high Cal who's the only closer we mentioned this last week in only closer in in the race and his horse that you know, when you look at his pedigree. It's just one miler after another in there. They're all the whole state up. My now, I'm not saying he can't win Wood Memorial. And and he can't go a distance of ground, but cata show. You know, you know, with with that closing core closing quarter. And and with his writing style. The one before that. Right there at the eighth pole in that race. And really didn't look like he was gonna win. Towards the end of their. That was a miler who's a great in gray moon winter, but he was a mile or his half brothers tactful who Dini. So you'd think he'd get this is there. He was a great one winning sprinter. His second dam was was the stakes place. Mile third dam was a group one winning miler in Europe. And it's one thing was group one fish miler in Europe. So I mean, I said there's just mile is everywhere in there. So I I just want to see him. Do it this way to the rage came up that really that really really getting to like the second was mind control who runs the same race everytime. He's always down on the inside is let anybody pass him. I mean, he's a game just gutsy wars. And he just never saw high-cal come in. He was way out in the military Strack. But he's out there that one his way battling with Instagram and much better. And just you know. With users to let the grand get by him. And you know, battling was much better than here comes high Cal in the last, you know, forty yards sweet by the sleep by anyone. But at the break that rates down they made the first quarter should be there in the first half and forty four and two and the second half fifty one and one I mean, it's okay to obviously to ride the second half slowed in the first half. But seven seconds slower. I mean, that's a forty four to the fifty one in one. So as to me jury's out on this race give I don't know what happened, you know, not that Brady had suffered quarter crack and he worked. Yeah. I don't know that I don't know if that was if anything to do with his performance, but that was you know, it was really sad to see him. Just stop the way. He did. He basically he's and the thing with nix go. I mean, he just completely lost. Lost his forum, a horse that good. You know, just start running so forty. I mean, it's got to be something some issue with him so I- Instagram ran well for first time in seven months tell you ran a good race. But he's a big muscular horse. I I don't know if he's really amount of quarterhorse not really bread for it. But you know, we'll see what happens in his second start much better. I'm sure is not a derby horse. I'm sure we will see him in the seven furlong and mile races. And I'm curious to see wine controls mind-control actually does have the pedigree to go longer. I mean, he's got a Mike contract. He does have a distance pedigree. And yet he's he's done. Very well sprinting. But if you look at the top and bottom family, you know, Bill being by stay thirsty. But you know, he's his a hopeful winter know wanted your home at a mile, and he ran big here two mile..

"Wow. That's been half the guy hadn't heard that. That also maybe point why the top of the market, the why those scores were strong as they were you get that many entries. It's the wave of the future being able to incorporate an online element is great. I know there some old school players who who don't love it in the sense that going to determine is such a part of the fun. But I think this is the case you just have to try to have your cake and eat it too. And you always have the option of going and enjoying the the camaraderie and the experience, but for so many of us on these Saturday can't always get out for the tracks. Still be able to play and Bethel's golden dollars or close to golden dollars on the w side and help really help the alochol horsemen and racing and make it so much easier. His fate. I I it. This is just this is the way it's gonna be certainly don't want it to kill live events, and I stopped short of ever wanting to see the, you know, I wanna see good hospitality and a good set. Up. So the cultural live contest person district and mortar whatever you wanna call continues. But this ability to just dwell without and so many more people to me on dousing good things and as for the bird brothers. I've only ever interviewed that like in passing and I need a proper sitdown. My five ahead of getting see it's pretty entertaining. And I'm hoping to feel some time soon and hoping to continue working for Nyra helping them for most and covers context I need to I been preview stuff for them. I should have tried to throw a hat in the ring to right? The review contests on this sounds like some great stories come out of there. And I'm sure they'll be more just a few weeks time at the Wood Memorial, challenge and participation tends to you'll participation. I bet they're gonna really knock it out that well, and before we we let enjoy the the rest of the day any any other any Cheltenham pushy. For people. Is there anything the rest of the the card after after still connected there numb? I'm here..

"And no one seems to know when you when you think about, you know, things that can happen in the workplace where you have cancer cluster. And things like that. And you don't know the underlying factors. Well, that's what's happening here, and everyone is pointing toward the surface because that's what they all run across. But there's also the idea that we've had twelve inches of rain in the last couple of months and how that's affecting it. So it is at this point a big mystery. They hired a top guy from Kentucky. He said the track was was ready. They brought in the former superintendent who's down yesterday, and they'll be down today and for the remainder to try to figure out what's causing this John. I think the other thing is a lot of people who might not know racing might not understand why these horses are dying just because they're injured. Why are horses euthanized? If they end up having an injury. Well, you know, if you or I if we have, you know, bang-up are knee or break, our leg, you know, we could go and sit in a recliner, we can do a lot of different things. And we the other leg is going to take a lot of the pressure. So we're like one hundred and fifty two hundred two hundred and fifty pounds these horses are thousand twelve. Hundred pounds. So you can't keep him immobile. And if one leg of the four is not working there's going to be pressure on the other three. And that's and that's like twelve hundred pounds of pressure going onto a hoof. And then sometimes the the it's called lamb and Itis what happens is, you know, the the bone in the leg will go into the hoof, and it's very painful, I've remember in two thousand six they try these spent nine months trying to save Barbara who won the Kentucky Derby would but broke down the Preakness, and they couldn't do it. And that's just the fragile nature of of thousand twelve hundred pound animal trying to support itself on four and then suddenly three legs such a tragic situation. And also as I understand it. There's a racing aspect of this too. Top derby contenders were expected to race this weekend. Now that the track is shut down indefinitely as I understand it. It might affect their chances to get into Kentucky Derby very much. So because you have spacing, you know, you'd go the derby. And then you go back a month. And you have you know, the same needed Herbie? The Wood Memorial the blue grass stakes the Arkansas derby is like three weeks, and then you back it up again. And that's what you were going to have this weekend is the San Felipe stakes which is for three year olds and game winner and improbable are two or Bob Baffert best horses. They're number one and two in the early rankings free derby rankings, and they need to they need. They're supposed to run on Saturday. Okay. Well, let's say they do get the track ready, and they run it on Thursday that would be twenty three days to the same needed Kirby. They could probably make that work. But if it goes beyond that, then we're, you know, we're do they run their training is all disrupted, and it could seriously compromise their chances of of of running in the Kentucky Derby, challenging situation all around John. Thank you very much right back. Sportscenter six eastern after PTI sage and Kevin on on tap. Stephen as take on when the Lakers season was laws plus eight rod joins the show to breakdown. Bryce, Harper's moved to the Phillies, and what's the trade market for Josh Rosen. If that's a big if the cardinals decided draft Kyle Murray at number one sportscenter six eastern on ESPN and.

"I think. Well, might might very well of hit on it. And I think there's a couple of reasons that you know, he deserves every every follow up chance. But you know, but she read I think was a little shaken, by the way this unfolded. He didn't like the way he looked going to the going out on the tracks that he had gotten washy and and that had not been him previously. So, you know. You can give him a mulligan. But at certainly if we think back to horse, like Irish war cry in fact, in recent years, Irish war cry, you know, had a miscue in Florida and and then snap back. So he was actually. I can't go on and become a really good steak source at amount of fifteen per mile and eight, but if you're looking for Kentucky Derby, you know, a mile and a quarter and the trip you need to do and if nerve being unraveled at Gulfstream Park on holy day was an issue. That's another thing. You don't wanna see in your Cam heading towards the Kentucky Derby. So if the reason he ran poorly was one he rejected the trip to it was an emotional issue. Well, any going to get any easier? The first in a mile quarter with twenty horses with that crowd with the long pre rates, the pomp and circumstance that goes with it. I like him a lot he can come back and win the fountain of youth. He could come back and win would Morial. I would not be shocked by that. I just think for a Kentucky Derby prospect, those were to really tough things swallow, and I love the horse. I hadn't ranked number two coming in. I was all into him to the point that I thought this race setup for closer. I wrote in countdown to the crown. The closer to watching the race was Harvey ball Bangor. I picked him second in the race. I played exact as Maximus chip with Harvey wall banger. I didn't play Harvey wall been I thought Maximus chip was that much better than them. And I thought the heavy jockey, you know, with those two what was the way to attack the race? Turns out it did meltdown pace does make the reysen in almost all accounts. Harvey wall took excellent advantage of being the only closer race that looked like it could fall apart a little bit. I didn't expect Maximus Maximus mischief to give it back. Some thoughts east coast, west coast, New York, California. Tactile horse. I don't think he's a world beater, but I think he's a pretty decent horse to come home the final three furlongs in the weather's thirty eight and free. That's not that bad because they weren't the first six one eleven to. So it's not like they went one thirteen one fourteen and walked home. I mean, they would faster the last three of the withers than they did the Swail at seven furlongs. Now that tells you the Swail was really slow late with the winter too bad late. So a good effort from tax and they're getting beat anything. It's gonna get way offer we know when the Gotham in the Wood Memorial roll around, but he's a nice horse for Danny Goggin outlet mutual Gustavo. I mean, hey qui-. It looked like he probably be loan speeding there. But magnificent McCall really wanted under Flavian Pratt. They went gunning out there. It was nice to see him just off pounce and go on. But as John White just mentioned improbable really handled Muccio Guzzo kinda held him at bay, you know, an arm's length in.
