"All right that if you look at the map Shang Province so where it was going originally was in the northernmost portion of Shang Dong. It actually actually diverted completely south of that province its distance is a distance of roughly two hundred and seventy nine nine miles and if your listeners. WanNa get a good way to visualize that imagine the Mississippi River decided to go up and have a wild weekend in Kansas City. That's the kind of thing we're talking about. That's the level of disaster. It's a level of disaster that would even still be difficult for us today to handle Okudaira and this sort of thing happens a great deal obviously some of its natural some of it is man made but the most infamous incident a a weapon housing the Yellow River was during the Japanese invasion of China after the Marco Polo Bridge incident and Chenggong. I check chose to destroy some of the dykes on the Yellow River to stop the Japanese advance and in doing so a AH estimated eight hundred thousand people died and more than four million were displaced now think about that. That's the kind of thing that they deal with. When it comes to the Yellow River edition the fact that it almost always floods naturally because of all the silt builds up it makes it a very unpredictable piece of territory despite its importance and that's the thing with this it will so unpredictable and is not even one monks full. Anyone could have been a emperor at this time and they would have to deal with this. He was just fighting something so out of his control there was nothing he could have done about the change in the yellow belly river and that's. I guess that would be like an you could look if that didn't happen. One might be more successful. He might be more remembered in history is just one of these swings. We don't know no. It's absolutely impossible to down but I'm looking at margin long and we're beginning to learn more about the man he was was on the whole it is in many ways something of a cautionary tale because he decided to basically up route in early futile society and redistricting assets across the board and of course he lost the kind of support that they needed and in addition to that he also had to deal with the absolute it disaster naturally that occurred in which is kind of interesting because water is not very very big problem in modern China but yeah if we're going to compare him to a socialist of course the other great and great not immoral context very very much in a stature context. I have have no love or sympathy for Mao whatsoever. Well the thing that here's the irony about it so there's a school of thought that believes one of the reasons why he want to enact these reforms was be head was to do with certain beliefs in Confucianism. Yes yes yes. That's that's always full to be that he wanted to follow Confucianism Very strictly in his times emperor yet you compare him to Mao Zedong and the historic irony of courses that Wong Mung perhaps enacted these reforms due to a very strong belief in Confucianism and then his you know let's let's just say idealogical. I ancestor then comes back almost two thousand years later launches the Cultural Revolution which one of the hallmarks was was of course targeting Confucianism are interesting. Yes it's like. WHOA long fully say devoutly as much as we can compare one. Now Mao had the complete opposite opinion of Confucianism too. It's like it's like an alternate. Take on one if we had the socially slight days but without Confucianism we get now unless I'm mistaken putting aside any sort of death or injury that occurred heard due to the diversion of the Yellow River which was out of their control. I could be wrong but I get the feeling that under one among the body count wasn't nearly as high no no compared to mouse. Many body counts a as high as those highs mouths especially compared to his body count. Yes and it's also interesting how quickly this fell apart on him and how he when he became emperor he didn't keep that part of him. That was you know keenly savvy in regards to politics playing the political game in order to further his as a vision. It's almost like he abandoned it. It releases an like Sean. Spicer is before becoming emperor. We have this really cunning guy. Hi this guy. He really manipulate what his way in the background. I maybe maybe he just saw realized I'm here now. I can do whatever I want and he didn't really he. He's abandoned that policies mind that policies being just went. I'm here now. Let's do would I want to do. This is offered to turn of how he acts. Before emperor and Harry acts as IMPR- and like I said in his later years you bonkers he went absolutely and say. Neil's like is blitzing drugs or the time. I was obsessive like magic. It's a whole different person. Yup I it certainly appears that way and the other thing that was really incredible about this is in terms of when he fell in the military aspect of my research is correct in terms of men fighting fighting men. He actually had a three to one advantage. Yes over the forces that ultimately did Jami and they still couldn't they soon can defeat the rebels known the rebels ultimately ended up seizing the capital and they ended up going over the wall and of course. We know how'd that happen next. That's well. Luckily luckily this very wholesome. podcast is rated e deeper explicit yes yes of course that's why we have it there but just to give the audience an idea of what we're trying to do here at eighty history so the other day. I was in a bookshop could waterstones which have they like. England Bond Noble and I opened an us into war history section. WHO's also get book for Research and there's a book about Chinese history of a UN. I come in handy up a new. I wanted to go and I sole. I went to pop out the Hun Dynasty and within the chapter up to the Han Dynasty was just a couple of paragraphs about Wong Mung his time as emperor so I just I just what I was really interesting being compared to the debt we're going into here compared to like a book about Chinese history and he had a couple of paragraphs on him and I appreciate in that and what we're trying to do this book. I just really need explanation of how finally we won't go history here. I completely concur in one of the EH. When it comes to history this is true across the world. Most people are interested in the history of their own people their own country their own sweep of civilization and certainly here in America. There are very few people that would be able to identify who long long was or have much to say about the Han Dynasty or first century China. I was one of them before research this yeah and he has far as I can tell point Patrick. It seems like we may be the most people maybe the people have talked about this fellow mojos. That's generally available at the moment like one moung Zomba's. Yes for better or worse but I have every intention of keeping all of my appendages and to be devoured by no it's my tongue is stayed in my mouth and no one else's no goodness goodness. I'll I'll tell you what Patrick this has been a very very interesting and worthwhile exploration of part of Chinese history and world history that is just not available in significant different digestible way but if it comes to power politics and dynasty and power and struggle. You'RE GONNA get.

"The end of the first half of the han dynasty which is now known as the western hun dynasty and i mentioned in the first half even at the honda odyssey just ended. It's gonna come back. Believe me and will probably look into that few down the line 'cause <hes> spoilers. The ascendancy and one mangas emperor doesn't go too well anyway. That's another question s another story for another time certainly and what i'm looking through your show notes you make a very interesting notation which is echoing joseph stalin. That's a character came came to mind straight away when i was look into his your one gun straightaway. I have a fairly good knowledge of russian history and stalin just came to mind you bring up stalin. <hes> stilman is a figure that you know when it comes to the great i mean great in terms of stature not not in a moral contacting as as the prominent twentieth century european or in the case of the soviet union eurasian yeah so tell leaders i've always found him to be far more fascinating than adolf hitler particular who implores everything revolving around him literally become a cottage industry in terms of media itself because yeah yeah yeah based on the actions and history history and everything that involved the third reich <hes> the last seventy plus years hitler has become a all-purpose this figure of pure evil and whereas prior to that time when people were making references uses to terrible people who achieved immense power they basically dove nd history and used a variety a different rulers to make their point so stone is very interesting in this case because for me personally patrick as far as history goes i take a great fascination in how power is accumulated and then how power is exercised now obviously there are big differences between the han dynasty and the early soviet period but there definitely seems to be similarities and you know a tip my hat to pretty much the godfather of anything having to do with understanding joseph stalin the <hes> princeton professor stephen kotkin who in the last couple of years is really it released two of projected three volume cradle to grave and slightly beyond biography of stalin mentioned. Yes mentioned into these to me before and i need to read those books audiobooks and probably well. Let's put it this way. If you go to the audio book read. That's probably good because the physical version. If you drop it on your foot you're going to the emergency room yeah so he book for show for me and he does a really good job of highlighting. How stalin accumulated power our within the system that existed post october coup and basically the development of the soviet state in this case similarities. He's at least to me and i'm curious to hear your thoughts on this are pattern is stalin did a fantastic job of hiding his hand very very similar similar long. You know most part his comrades that had known him for years as members of the bolsheviks knew he was completely dedicated but they never saw him as a potentially physical threat to them no yeah and so you know he. He obviously makes a name for himself in the underground revolutionary part specifically with lennon because lennon knows he'll. He'll do whatever it is yes of him and do a very good job that and when it comes to building soviet state they give him this position of general secretary of the party and british story and david robinson does a fantastic has stick b._b._c. documentary on stalin and specifically stalin during the second world war described that position of general secretary as the keeper the index cards yeah but on top of that he slowly accumulated more responsibilities that had nothing to do with the original regional position where he was even in charge of lennon's healthcare after you know he's he's had several a stroke and he's out of the picture and by the time stalin is excuse me by the time lennon is gone in twenty four. It takes about four years for stalin stalin to get that grip on power ethan everybody along the way and that reminds me so much of long. I'm curious what your thoughts on that. When i was reading this <unk> stalling came straight to mind as you sort of power hungary and despite being so power hungry and being briefly killing his own son supposedly leaking a child everyone's still loved and respected him for it doesn't pay wong mung was amazing at showing his hand as you mentioned shouldn't for my research. Did i find like history at like sources from that time. Period of people say how much they disliked him. A a lot of people are saying how much they enjoyed him and we have proof of that. People wanted this go to take over. They could have said no and i'm amazed they didn't say no and that's what i found interesting trusted move this. It was the hunt indices ability to change from tradition. I think with the pulse and history we always imagine people with a strict and respect effected tradition and they didn't they went no. We're gonna know by just because these people having kids doesn't mean the hunt dennis desks to come to an end we we can break away from that and we pick you mom we pick you to be our new leader and i found that incredible just shows how much they cared him to spy how unappealing he seems to modern as an is you know for me especially in the period in roman history and where we start on being under the rule of augusta's. It's amazing how how different the thinking is in certain respects because the one thing one monk apparently couldn't overcome come was the fact that he wasn't a hot janet in favor. There didn't seem to be any route for that to occur whereas yeah look at the transition of power our between julius caesar and octavian who we know now as a gustis it was a far more fluid system system basically because they were creating something in rome that didn't really have any real foundation yet which is ninety so you know julius caesar is murdered and he has a will and that will dictate it because he didn't have any any children that would be considered proper lineage. He definitely had just not by the right women to do it and yeah yeah and in his final will and testament and the most important part of that was who he decided to succeed him in this case it was was his grandnephew octavian opie who yes who when he arrives on the italian peninsula and in roman finds finds this out. You know what he does patrick muzy do he assumes his great uncle's name. He starts going by gayus. Julius caesar nothing about the political how politically adept that was because yeah when he was taken out in in the burgers coup you know the conspirators and in this case you know the most notable one being brutus were very very scared about how oh the people would react to this news as well as the various allegiances from the military that had been under julius caesar and what brought him to power ultimately and that octavian has the political insight insight to assume that title and ultimately used that to begin building the infrastructure specifically specifically military infrastructure to ultimately take down his biggest rival a little further down the road in his case but before our show actually start which of course is mark antony and yes creation of the triumvirate where the empire is split into three effectively military terry dictatorships but when octavian ultimately overcomes this takes out his rivals most notably mark antony and doing it from the very beginning with the nucleus of knowing to assume his what ultimately became divine based on a edict that came out of the roman senate shortly thereafter great uncle julius caesar and i find that fluidity and the formation uh of tradition interesting when you compare it to a place like dynasty yeah were is all despite they were so happy for him to take over. They didn't make him a han and from what i can tell those wave him to become a haunt and especially as his father died quite young a little. I'm into his mother but i'm sure i imagine they reach. She died a young either but you'd think maybe that farther dying young you think not be maybe they would have married his mother to a honda or something like that but no apparently they didn't you could easily of how to hunt hans stepfather that could have made but didn't even seem to do them that. That is very interesting yet. He's still managed to pull it off at least for yes and as we will see daphne was for a while too much detail but he's a dynasty very interesting time in history just in ten years or so where he was in power and despite how eager they worth him to <hes> take over that eagleson disobeys well. The reality of power is one achieving it to keeping it. Yes yes which is a whole different different story and in the case of wong mung and you kind of touched on this a little earlier if you could expound upon a bit regarding his treatment treatment of his family in his ascension to power so he did have careful definitely did people can't fair to wifi believing in anything about her here annoyingly but he was married. He had children and he did them. He was very respectful humble to the but unfortunately if they go in his way a that was the end of it you know he could turn on you just like that. You will be his son. He married was endorsed to the young in preparing just to solidify his spot in the dynasty. He came to these people but he can't himself more. I think is the best way to put it you. There's a excellent anecdote certainly not from this arab but we seem to have stumbled upon the reoccurring theme of power and how it how people get how retain it and how it affects them and there's an excellent anecdote that i think really paints. It's this picture and it actually has to henry kissinger yep it. It means something on any case so many people wouldn't know necessarily that henry kissinger was actually considered himself something of a playboy imagine that especially with the you know the really thick dark framed glasses and that and that very <hes> professor soil and magisterial way in which he chooses to comport himself went in power might image of henry kissinger comes from futurama when he's just a headed mitchell. Oh god i love that show. It really hits on things in a way that it just it just doesn't hit another's well-guarded. Is it graceless anyway yeah any case when he was first richard nixon's national security adviser and then later his secretary of state he dated a lot of high profile women movie stars models things of that nature and one of them and don't ask me which one had had a very interesting way of describing henry kissinger in who he was. He said henry never had sex <music>. You never had time for it <hes> for him. Power was both the four play and the climax thanks. That's really interesting. Yeah just shows how much someone like. Henriques chip valued power that value above six six as low people tend to enjoy yeah yeah absolutely so much natural drives are random by the natural desire to procreate i think in many ways and of course he's a lot of people have very very differing in heated opinions hurting henry kissinger and that is not what's in question here but i do get the feeling that that particular description as apt as it is probably could apply to so many of the people that you and i are going to cross yeah in the entirety of our project together eighty history a law hungry people filled with desire. Yes yes absolutely and if you could give us a little cliff hanger for what comes next for awang mong. I wanna know well like i said his new xin industry. The great dynasty that poster take off to the huns only lasts about ten years the love people had for one and these eagerness to take over disappears and with a big spoilers with one -mongst new dynasty and dink. He ends as well any more than that well. We won't have to put on the spoiler alert sirens. Just stay tuned. You're you're listening to the a._d. History podcast anyway. I think that brings us to the end of our journey for today patrick. Where can people find us. You can find me personally on twits name. Explain why not and of course you can form your my youtube channel name explain and for myself you can find me on my newly minted twitter account.

"You. Anna and we are back so patrick. You're about to jump into a part of the world that so often gets overlooked or reluctant history but not anymore. Let's get into it so yeah. When we started this first episode i i knew very well you can look into christianity buff of jesus and the roman empire over that and i wanted to go further field because i know that quite wow i'm sure it'll over listeners know of that story quite well said i wanted to explore somewhere else. What else was going on at this time when we think of one day i'm sure most of us do think of the birth of christ as just it's an ominous river is named after him so i sat look around see what else will go down in the world at that time i if i went to look for what was going on in america that time and a kabaddi find anything on that have very little israel now however i then went off to look into the far east and i found out about the hun dynasty and its determining history with the honda odyssey. I want to share with you today paul so it's interesting interesting how history has been split into b._c. and a._d. China itself was actually going through something of a split self at this time around this'll missile time period and that is with the hun dynasty now can be some background on the han dynasty started in two hundred six b._c. So it wasn't near you by any stretch of the imagination one eight eight definitely wasn't new but this hunt dynasty is really considered the golden age of china and their history huge amounts of things happened in the han dynasty at this time many great inventions were made by the chinese in the hunt dynasty stuff was still using today. Hey have you heard of a gunpowder encompassed pool well. I think it rings a bell. They invented it. All the way back then they had gun powder they had accompanies they invented paper and printing and even stuff low wheelbarrows stuff that like you know my silly not to mention a wheelbarrow but that would have been monumental mental that time to have something to call it a good surrounding like that would have been amazing amazing even the hon characters the han dynasty used <hes> what the basis of the modern china is alphabet to do a huge influence your time in chinese history and it was very interesting life. If you will live again the han dynasty the time especially depending on where you were living life in the cities with tough as you can imagine a unless you're wealthy of course was life in the countryside. It's that was tough to but it was easier. Easier holidays work could pay that solving out in the countryside and a lot of people in the country respected confucianism. I'm sure you will confucianism well. I think it's pretty fair to say that it's had a very very deep influence in and around east asia certainly deeply ensconced even in modern chinese culture monthly in ways that the chinese or other east asians may not entirely be cognizant of on a daily basis it simply so ingrained frank yeah so as you know we've confucianism it's l- of respecting the elders that whole unwavering respect towards the out is because they are older and wiser than you and i mentioned specifically because it's going to come to play with what's going on at this moment of time so as i mentioned we we have the han dynasty and the hunt innoc- was actually goofy something of a lull period at this time despite being the golden age of chinese history things were on a bit of a downer and that was primarily to do with the emperor's the emperor's kept on dying and as we know we've monarchy's at emperors you need the child to take the frode once you'll go on and this was the problem they kept dying without having any children to take over and this just kept on avenue the string improves come and go really quickly before they could create an offspring offspring and that's where the main character in our story today comes into play wong mung so one was born in around forty five b._c. And and as you can hear from his name one moung he wasn't one hundred tour in fact he only go into the han dynasty due to being the nephew of one of the previous empress wife so so it was a bit nepotism coming into play there but however he was born into a very distinguished family. His father died young and one mum was not being very humble. Oh and he gave respect to very honest and impartial and that's of honestly emma partial nurse will once again be coming into play here. Is that something the career if i may interject this fun how much of that in your estimation was mung long trying to you spin a certain narrative about him. In order to fulfil his later goals <hes> i think that could come into play quite a a bit like i said he's very respectful and honest and yet it could have very well been this impartial and honesty as we look into iran. It did send some of his family to prison. Maybe he just wanted them out the pitcher for various reasons and maybe he spun this image around himself where he used his honesty where some so it was a good thing he was really using as a negative thing and as i mentioned confucianism will come into play this he was an older man but i'm going to power support me think people just respected him because that's all they knew so. Let's cut to about one one eighty and in one a._d. One month became the duke of annum and what's important about this is he was the first ever juke in the dynasty before this dukes didn't exist in the han dynasty and the first juke of the han han-dynasty wasn't even done which is a crazy in my eyes. That set just shows the power. This guy had as an outsider infiltrating this dynasty before that have in one b._c. I also mentioned his first. He helped put an prepping on the phone when i of honda childless so and the thing hey ping was just nine at the time so hunt one moung but this kid on the fraud just sat him there and even the <hes> ping and prepaying was was <unk> who was really stayed in the wheel of the han dynasty at this time. We'll see that i think that's a very very interesting and it definitely brings up many many different comparisons history but specifically when you're dealing with a monarchy the idea of a region acting in the name of a child monarch yeah influencing them ultimately trying to mold them as they get older and in order to consolidate their own power our so what's interesting here you mentioned regency and we're going to stop bit. Later on one mong was an officially his region. He's just playing behind the scenes. It's so we'll talk about that later on. He wasn't even officially the region. Everyone fault this kid. Paying and paying was the emperor but really was everyone also knew it was actually this guy running the phone unofficially anyway between two to four a._d. And as i mentioned some time periods will be bit sketchy this earlier in history every one married his daughter to this young pro to help secure his power and make sure pins family wouldn't get in the way and they were objectors to this not everyone i was happy about this happening including wong's own son and like i said jutras honesty and impartialness one locked up his own son to prison when he died there. That's just how impartial this man was. He didn't let anyone get in the way of his power including his own son and yet as i say that just shows even the people love respectful honest impartialness obviously almost go pee on the receiving end melba and sometimes it was his own cage which is just crazy so new bite free the the han dynasty already happy with one but however imp was dying young and childless they were worried heavens was showing that the hunt dynasty advanced course things like this were ready baked in a chinese history and history remains good opens bad omens and that came up here they had a good crop harvest infre- the and this showed the chinese people they sold this as a sign and they sold us as the gods were happy with how long was running the country. Is this good crop office office. I'm sure good omens. A bad omens will pop up a lot more in our time and in this podcast and people stock in them at the time and <unk> even much on city to us as we said the possible different country and that's going to be caught d'amato of this of this podcast. Oh i think there's absolutely no doubt about it. It just is initially when we're going through it with a fine to yum like yeah as gaffer you go but this is different time. It was basically different place displayed geographically. It was the same place that's all there is to it show that rock might have come from the han dynasty the apart from the time. It's it's. It's such a different place but anyway says i said about regency in five to six a._d. One month was officially gained to become the region for pink which was was good however there's the slight issue that ping died which is the best things some people even before. He was murdered by wong mung himself. That's like a big mystery of history did one murder paying we didn't really know but however this led to want to scramble for power power he needed to find some child to put on the phone so he can manipulate this charleston back and still be in power and eventually he did find a i'll discount and something else i need to mention right now. Apologies pronunciation views the name explained no structure pronunciation. I have done some research research before they said but if there is any words i say look for on. I'm sure he will let me know in the comments and never fail. They never buffet. Trust me. You won't get a little comments sold a video or podcast. Just say something wrong. It helps really well anyway. We've really in one did officially become his region an and it's actually fought that despite being imported this young rusi yen was practically under house arrest is full. He very ready left home. Even though he was the emperor he was an imprint in kingdom and it just sits. The image of the contemplating was clearly. This was somebody who had a great deal of desire for power our almost any way that he could possibly accomplish that and from ten purposes it he did yeah he did an as we'll see between in seven a._d. More more people start to be that why should become emperor full-time 'cause he was basically him for any way and what's interesting is that wasn't much assistance. When he took on the phone many felt the han dynasty had lost heaven gotten mandate to rule you because of the empress dying and not having any children many good omens prove to the chinese people that they were that one mum was fit to rule and with this. He established his own dynasty. He took on the first full time in ninety. This went more or less quite smoothly. That was a minor uprising in seven a._d. But that didn't really stop anything so yeah in nine eight one finally became emperor taking over from the infant rusi yin but however due to not being on himself. He couldn't really run the hun dynasty. They were happy from to take over but it can be the han dynasty so he set his own dynasty coda sheen dynasty which meant new dynasty which makes sense as it was a brand new dynasty and with that came the end of the first half of the han dynasty which is now known as the western hun dynasty and i mentioned in the first half even at the honda odyssey just ended..
