But I know their ratings have been very bad in this, too. That's unfortunate. They become like a political organization on that's not a good thing. I don't think that's a good thing for sports or for the country. And the ratings have been through the roof, even beating the ratings for the DNC. "It's time to stop driving off the road, and it's time to stop getting man. And it's time to listen to this because again, we could've had our hands heads in the sand before. I'm sure I did. I'm sure my family did. You hear about these things? There are a lot of them and you kind of go. Well, okay. Maybe that was deserved because of this reason or that reason, right? I mean, you know, the police had a reason or this guy's a bad guy, or this person is a bad person. Whatever. You cannot explain away what we're seeing now, and we should never have explained away the ones before, too, But I guess what I'm saying that's critical math. We've reached right now and support such a huge part of it. Going back to my role of sports journal. It's um it's sports takes the national conversations that we should have, and there was no doubt the end a WNBA Major League baseball. The NHL, you know, finally come along Naomi Osaka and in tennis When the great stars of the In the game of tennis all of them they're taking us to a national conversation that we should have. And thank goodness we are having this conversation. Two weeks from now, the NFL season will be underway. If if all things go is as planned, the Bears were among the teams who did not practice yesterday, choosing instead Tio Go have a conversation, but they wanted to be more than conversation. Action. How do you think NFL players are going to react as the season gets closer? It's so interesting, isn't it? That this started two days ago when we first heard about the NBA, shutting down or striking, boycotting whatever word you want to use, And that was exactly the four year anniversary of when Colin Kaepernick first took a knee. During the national anthem in peaceful protest of police brutality in San Francisco for four years apart and and fascinating that would be August 26 on both cases so that that's Pretty amazing. I think the NFL will be doing a lot and saying a lot we again because of some like Kaepernick. He's not in the league, but the legacy is there for so many of those football players who's coming after him. And again, the NFL is a predominantly black league and by the way, I'm not saying that this just fault on black people, African Americans. No, no, no, but they have led the way. And they are the heroes here in this story, And also you said something interesting, Dave. When you talked about, uh, the action, you know, this isn't just even I would be fine if it were just screaming and yelling. I think that would be totally justified. If it were just people screaming or yelling. That's not what's happening here. Make this happen before. I don't know. But now You look at what the WNBA players said. You look at what the NBA players that it's a call to action and what they're what they're saying. Registered to vote and then vote and I've now heard that there are 10 NBA WNBA whenever facilities that are now going to be turned into voting centers in October, and then on election day, November, 3rd isn't that fascinating. Hughes in Atlanta, I know are two of them that they will turn over there major arenas for voting. The bats with these players they're talking about, and I even if you're not sure about this, and I'm guessing a Zeiss said. I'm sure there's some folks listening who are not sure about all of this right are concerned about some of this. How can you be concerned about that? That is America at its finest voting, encouraging people to vote? They're also course talking about justice for Briana Taylor. And arresting the police officers who killed her again. To me. That is action that it's admirable. And I think history is going to judge all of these young athletes so well, I think we could look back on this. This will be a remarkable time in our country for so many reasons. 2020 pandemic etcetera, but But these people are shining at exactly the right moment. Yeah, we I said this yesterday. "Athletes in at least five professional sports leagues the NBA The WNBA. Major League Baseball Major League soccer and tennis. Have decided to paraphrase one of those athletes that they are black Americans first and athletes second and so have decided not to play for the time being the decision of course, comes in the wake of the police shooting of Jacob Blake in Kenosha Wisconsin the other day many other black men and women in many other cities through time. These athletes want fundamentally police and criminal justice reform right marketplace's Marielle cigarrettes going with what leverage those athletes actually have and how long it might last last night Elizabeth Williams who plays for the WNBA Atlanta dream made a statement she and the other teams would not be playing and she had an ask for their fans if you truly believe that lives matter than vote. Go and complete the two thousand twenty cents is now don't wait. If, we wait we don't make change. Pro Athletes have a platform, and in this case, they're using it to reach out directly to fans and viewers Laurie latrice Martin calls, but they're doing a strike. She teaches sociology in. African. American studies at Louisiana State University. Why striking there providing inspiration for those that are on the front line and goes they're involved in various grassroots efforts. But what about more direct financial pressure the players are withholding their labor hoping their demands will be met. That's a little trickier when they refused to play that does hurt the bottom line for leagues and team owners who could try to force change the NBA billionaires and millionaires you have. Eric. loomis. Who teaches history at the University of Rhode Island says owners could use that power to lobby state legislatures like Milwaukee Bucks players are doing they're trying to get Wisconsin lawmakers to pass police reform legislation, but highly unlikely was Austin. Legislature is gonNA listen about because Wisconsin. Is dominated by pretty conservative Republicans who had been opposed. Chinese protests and and Ben unders. Order of the police enormous times players would also have some leverage over local governments when teams play in a city that city collects tax dollars from parking concessions but there are no fans in stadiums right now so they can't pull that lever. "You're used to hearing field yates is voice, but field is under the weather. So sitting next to me on the couch. As you watch US live and if you're listening in your home is secret Squirrel Daniel stop playing the role of field just in a much hairier way. So. Obviously. Last night in sports was. Unprecedented and I think I speak I'm only going to speak for myself but I would be surprised to learn that I'm not speaking for the entire fantasy focus. Oh, six, I wanNA crew. Both in front of and behind the MIC to say that, we we come in today with heavy hearts and we come in today. We didn't. We weren't even sure if we should come in today like it's it's. The NBA. Be Aware of this but let but last night, the NBA canceled three games. Postpone, them I should say. And I don't know what your immediate reaction Daniel. But mine was I get it. I totally get it and I was. You know I re tweeted Stephen, a Smith thought spoke eloquently about it and I re tweeted his video. which was just saying how proud he was of the NBA players for. Four saying, Hey, we've been saying this socially. We've been saying this in interviews. We've been saying this on are our social media channels and it's not enough and we need to take another step, and so we are taking another step forward in voicing. Our opinions and and you know and saying this is wrong. Something has to change and I. I fully support and fully agree with the message and I-. UNPRECEDENT sports. Yeah. It really is. The NBA The WNBA Major League Baseball MLS, all of them like taking a stand. In support. Which I thought was a beautiful and amazing thing to see. The as we start, we're taping this at ten am and so as far as I know and I could be wrong on this but I know that at least so far the jets, the colts and Washington of All said they're canceling practice. Yup. My suspicion is that most if not all teams in the NFL will do so. So. It's it's been sort of incredible to see. So it would be weird for US Daniel to not acknowledge like we're in unprecedented times. We're unimpressive times for so many different reasons obviously you know. But As it affects the sports world as it affects the sports world. It feels silly. And insignificant to talk about fake football. Yeah, if. We acknowledged that we feel like there are much greater stories going on in the world literally up to ninety seconds before we take this, we were still talking about whether or not. It would be right for us to decide to come on and talk about and be silly and be our show as a reprieve because we understand that's what our podcast is. A lot of people that's correct and if you're even watching this, the truth is is that this is this is a massive story. It's an important story. It's an important story to the to the history of our country. It's an a massively important story, and so if you're tuning into this like when massively important stories happen Daniel, you don't think let me hear what Matthew Berry thinks about that. Correct like eight, like you want to hear what Matthew Berry thinks about fake football and occasionally some nonsense. And so listen. A lot of different programs both here on ESPN and other networks and other platforms. That are discussing this and that will do deep dives into this. There's The which part you should check out this like from the NBA bubble today is going to have so much great reporting definitely check out the which pot if you have not but you're right that that's not what our podcast is is that it's not what our podcast is and so I feel like if you are tuning in. To this show you are doing so because you have a draft coming up, you play fantasy football to escape everything else in your life and it is a hobby of yours and so if you were tuning in today, you would like to hear us talk about fantasy football and so. We. We just want to, we want to acknowledge what is going on. We stand with them. We support them very much. We we. We fully believe in the message that the NBA players are sending and that all the sports world that are joining in them. So we are with them and solidarity we completely, we don't want to be that we we want. No no ambiguity about that you and I specifically Daniel not that anyone in the show but you WANNA know instead talking right now. So just we're in full support of them but what we're GonNa do is if you'd like to talk more about this, we suggest going elsewhere if you WanNa talk about fake football, we're going to do that after this. "Spare the air alert in effect for the Bay Area today after some cloud cover look for partly to mostly sunny skies today highs from the sixties to near 90 far inland. It's morning edition from NPR News. I'm Steve Inskeep, and I'm Rachel Martin, The sports world is taking a stand against the police shooting of Jacob Lake in Wisconsin. First, it was the Milwaukee Bucks boycotting their playoff game. Then the MBA postponed Game five of three different playoff series. Other teams and leagues have quickly followed. We're going to talk about all this with Jesse Washington of ESPN. See undefeated. He is on the line with us. Hi, Jesse. Good morning. So this all happened fast, didn't it? Can you just walk us through yesterday? Just a few hours. Yes, as we were all preparing to settle in for another evening of NBA playoff basketball. The word started coming out of the locker room that the Milwaukee Bucks We're not going to play. And at first, it was easy to be somewhat cynical that it would happen or how much it would mean but it quickly. Snowballed and avalanche into one of the most profound displays of racial sports protests that we've seen in many years. Can you take them off? I mean, we had the WNBA Major League Soccer right, right, Well, first, the whole slate of NBA play off games did not happen, And there's a lot at stake in these playoffs. For these athletes Legacies championships. There's several Siri's The Rockets and Oklahoma Thunder Series is tied to two and so for them not to play is really remarkable. When you think about the competitiveness of these athletes and how important it is to win a championship for these people. That is what their whole existence is about. So off the bat. It showed that there is something bigger than sports bigger than basketball bigger than entertainment. At stake here. Humanity is what's in state and then it's friends of baseball, which is not traditionally seen as a sport that is political or even interested in racial justice Protests. Then there was the tennis player Naomi Osaka, who refused to play in the semi finals of the Western and Southern Open. And this is a very powerful statement in a sport like tennis, which, as she noted, is predominantly white. And she said before anything else, I am a black woman, and I think that really attest the humanity. Of these athletes that we look to for entertainment or as robots or in animate sporting objects, But really, they're not there people right. There was also some reaction in broadcast right inside, the MBA host Kenny Smith actually walked off set to show solidarity with the players. We've got a clip of that. As a black man as a former player. I think it's best for me to support the players and just not be here tonight. I mean, it is so interesting when I think about you know the last dance and Michael Jordan, right, Jesse when Michael Jordan talking about how he's been loath to toe weight into politics, it just wasn't what people did back then what is happening now? That is so different. I think the players have woken up to their leverage and their power in this situation, and they're defying their owners on DH to say their owners even puts in a context the relationship has has been Subservient over all these years of organized sports, and other players are finally realizing that we have the power to not do as we're ordered to do. We have the power to make change. To create change to demand change and to really stand up for our humanity, toe to seek equity and justice, and it's a very powerful moment in American sports history. "Us on the Shell Pennzoil performance line bottom line guys this is a huge day I. Mean in a matter of hours we could know what will happen moving forward short-term and long-term. Jay, this is not a joke in the board of Governors get together to meet in a situation like this. The stakes are gigantic. We'll see what happens. The players are also going to be meeting today but despite it all you've been saying all morning, you're not that optimistic that basketball will be played today or really moving forward here. Operative word optimistic I am optimistic actually after yesterday the fact that the players are uniting I don't think I look any longer at optimism of seeing basketball I look at the of change. And I think that is the most important thing here, and like I said earlier extreme situations call for extreme measures and you heard I don't know whose voice was leading into this segment that players don't want to be used as pawns anymore for a bigger agenda they actually they want to be the queen piece and they have a chance to be the most powerful piece there is. Think about this for one second key. In, the midst of all this chaos you guys both the question. Sure you ready. Key what happened last Tuesday? I think about okay Zubin. What happened last Wednesday? Exactly. My point we live in a tornado of chaos. Everybody a second about what did happen because so many things happened so fast and when you hear politicians speak think about it I don't watch news anymore that much I mean I, stay inform I try to read as much as possible but you don't get yourself in that whirlwind thing about who has the WHO has the ability to really capitalize on making the world stop. Athletes Right at least regards whether people like it or not. They have made NBA players have made the world stop for second hour. Go back to saying this again. Now that they have everybody's attention and I hope that they are consulting people who are civil rights leaders. The next words that come out of their mouths are going to be so important because you have to outline the framework of what we need to do in order to get done. The the NBA WNBA Major League Baseball. All stop yesterday. Now maybe baseball may pick back up but I don't think that the NBA will. And when you start to look at it, there's teams that are supposed to play today. They've got to follow suit to what happened yesterday you know, and so you start that process. In. Then you got the clippers and the Lakers. With strong ownership groups very, very strong in involved. To the point where they've got between the two, they've got to two strongest owners in professional sports. They've got four of probably the top ten players in the NBA, which is a lot of power in the one guy of all of them is Lebron James He's at the top very top of the leaderboard Indian Hawaii right behind him and co I didn't talk much. But just because just because he doesn't talk to the media much doesn't mean he's not talking to his peers about his feelings in the way that he feels about the situations that's going on right now today. When you look at that, you got to think that there's a lot of things is gonNA be discussed in that meeting the day the financial ramifications. The the the what it is that the players WanNa see done. Swiftly. quickly. Maybe there today as Ryan Holland pointed dollars I said earlier maybe there's some sort of emergency situation that gets things done quicker because like Jay said, it's a process. We all know that it's not going to happen overnight never does it never does because you're going to have people on one side jockeying for position another group Jockey position putting themselves in trying to put themselves in play as college athletes. Right? Even having this you're GonNa have all of those sort of things happening, but if you have the understanding. In a strong understanding, not a wink wink just do it for me understanding but a strong understanding you potentially Cassia but I don't think the guy like Lebron James is GonNa go for that. He's not going for the wink wink hold on we're GonNa get to let's have a conversation. We just WANNA finish up the season why he's not GonNa go for what's lost if indeed, there's no more basketball moving forward this year I'm not just the money what is lost. To be honest with you. Because the season would be over with I don't feel like anything will be lost, but a would be gained so much would be gained. So much. You give up this for that. You give up soul small. A championship is small compared to what we're trying to get accomplished. I I also think that there is an obligation. Within the media to and I will say this wholeheartedly key because what media has turned into as entertainment. We no longer discuss facts blatant facts about what things were. I've got to argument with a friend the other day as well. He was reaching for a gun and like, well, did you read the actual report? There was no gun in the car. Now there was a knife in the cars with the report said but say, yes, it didn't say that he actually had the knife possession. So I see a lot of completion when people arguing with not having the facts and people are in bold in more than ever opinion is not fact. Opinions are not fact let's discuss. That's decipher the facts and then break down what the course of action is. DMZ You can get gunned down your back for having a knife in your car. We seen people with guns spit on. They didn't get gunned down coming up in minutes. What's it like to be in that room when you're negotiating with NBA owners a guy that's been there done that. Day will and Sylvan the podcast..

"But you're right there's been cooling yesterday we'll see about today very little, very little discussion of those who for suffer who died at the hands of police through the moments that sparked these protests to begin with I'll say this really as a final point west wing aides say they previewed a little bit of the president's remarks. It's still being worked on today we're told that. Don't expect it to be quite as dark as his infamous american-carnage inauguration speech but he's absolutely going to make this contrast is GonNa draw a juxtaposition between the radical left which he says controls Joe Biden and what doing and he's going to portray himself as sort of the final barrier between those radical forces and the normal American way of life look for that and patriotism to be among his themes tonight. Alright Johnson Lemaire live for us at the White House no hatchback violations for him so far. Coming up NBC SPORTS MIKE TO RICO JOINS US to discuss dramatic escalation in a season of athletes demonstrating for social justice morning joe is a moment. Hey It's Chris as this week and my podcast wise is happening. I'll be talking with stokes political scientists who covers utility companies about how they are the key to our climate future. You don't get to choose who you buy your electricity from electric is an essential service. So if I don't like that my utility is anti climate action or is using money from my rates to fund dark money campaigns I don't have. Any exit option I can't go to buy from somebody else. So I think that they are real legal questions as to whether or not monopoly utilities with a guaranteed profit and unlimited funds to spend on politics from captured customer base for an essential service should be allowed to spend money in politics at all this week on why is this happening search for? Why is this happening wherever you're listening right now and subscribe? Welcome back to morning Joe the police shooting of Jacob Blake in Wisconsin sparked boycotts postponements across the world of sports yesterday led by the NBA and the Milwaukee, bucks who refuse to take the floor in their first round playoff series against the Orlando Magic. Pass for months I've seen a light on racial injustice facing are African American community citizens around the country, their voices and platform to speak out against these long booms despite the willing plea for change, there has been no action. So our focus today cannot be basketball. Taken to court and Represent Wall Wisconsin, we are expanded to play at a high level give maximum effort not accountable. We hold ourselves to their standard, and then this moment we are manning the same from lawmakers law enforcement. The Bucks team reading statement there the move which prompted the NBA to postpone all three of three playoff game scheduled yesterday comes with the support of the bucks owners even though they did not know about it beforehand while the team senior vice president put out a statement on twitter reading. Quote some things are bigger than basketball. The stand taken today by the players and organization shows that we are fed up enough is enough change needs to happen I. AM incredibly proud of our guys and we stand one hundred percent behind our players ready to assist and bring about real change. The protest yesterday flowed beyond the NBA to several other major sports leagues, including Games in the WNBA Major League, baseball, and major league soccer following. The NBA's decision the WNBA as three scheduled games. For last night, we're postponed after players declined to compete baseball games between the Cincinnati reds and Milwaukee brewers in Milwaukee, Seattle Mariners padres in San Diego and Los Angeles dodgers and giants in San Francisco or called off hours before they were set to begin and all but one of six major league soccer matches yesterday were postponed after one or both teams decided not to play. The NFL's Washington football team confirm last night. It has cancelled today scrimmage at Fedex field to allow for a time of reflection and tennis star Naomi Asaka says, she will not compete in today's semifinal match at the western and southern open citing her position as a black woman in a majority white sport. Let's bring in Mike Tirico of NBC Sports Mike. Good Morning. It's great to have you with us today just I your broad stroke. I was thinking yesterday it was the fourth anniversary of Colin Kaepernick first sitting on the bench for the national anthem during an NFL preseason game, August twenty, six, two, thousand sixteen. He was effectively run out of the League for that, and now here we are four short years later with the most famous athlete in America and perhaps on Earth Lebron James leading the NBA a walkout. It. Grades to be at the table with all this morning. It is so stark the reality of the impact of what you just said this is a cross sports. This is not one NBA team that plays in Wisconsin saying we're not going to play this spread through all of the players there in Orlando and the bubble. Then the WNBA like you said also in their own bubble of break Florida and on through baseball named Asaka in tennis I can't think of historically as widespread a day of protest in the world. Of Sports that we've seen in America we've seen significant protest John Carlos and Tommie Smith in nineteen sixty eight Olympics in Mexico City when they raised a fish for black power on the podium as they were receiving medals this though is so widespread and was so grassroots really as it took off at either Willie the day before the Detroit lions didn't have their practice they had a full conversation about these issues..

"If you were enjoying the NBA playoffs before Wednesday when a boycott led by the Milwaukee Bucks sparked the postponement of three NBA playoff games and a stunning ripple effect throughout the ethnic world tough lock. Players have made it. Clear sports are no longer here to serve as some sort of panacea for tough times. Some unifying force, some pleasurable distraction. Ever, since Colin Kaepernick took a knee during the national anthem to protest police violence and racial injustice in twenty sixteen and especially in these past few months since the killing of George Floyd and Brianna Taylor and Ahmad Armory pro sports stars have been consistently saying we're people before we're athletes on. Wednesday. They showed that to be true like never before. Only Osaka had announced on social media that she wouldn't play her Thursday semifinal match as a black woman I feel as though there are much more important matters at hand that need immediate attention rather than watching me play tennis she wrote. I respect the hell out of them for doing that. Carlos the American sprinter who famously raised his fist along with Tommy. Smith on the medal stand at the nineteen sixty eight Olympics tells time. Because you have to squeeze the toothpaste tube to get people to respond and they're boycotting. Let's the powers that be whether it's the NBA or any professional organization or corporate entity know that they need to raise their voices they need to get serious about the situation. Carlos is black power. Salute is iconic and speaks to late sixties unrest similarly high profile sports boycotts come to define these times..

"Freddie Infections, the last word. My first last word is on Major League baseball, and they should really, really do this now. A case you missed it. Jeff Passan, ESPN Major League baseball insider. Was on get up early on on Tuesday and the questions put to him about okay. Everybody else is having success in the bubble whether the MBA WNBA Major League Soccer NHL, etcetera. What about Major League baseball? What about them in a bubble situation? Well, Jeff Passan, ESPN Major League Baseball Insider says not no regular season, but You in l A do it in Texas to it in Phoenix. Do it in Florida do it anywhere. How's his way of saying if you're going to do it in the playoffs? Make it happen If your major league baseball make sure that you don't have to worry about any stop start situation when it comes to your postseason when we've seen that from a couple of teams so far in the regular season, barely a week past when it comes to Major League baseball. I'll say this of your Bob man for the commissioner. Don't think about it. Don't talk about it. Just do it. You have a chance where this season was already salvaged by at least having a 60 game season. To make sure you maximize safety and minimize any potential covert 19 positives. Why would you not do this? If you're made the baseball YEP. Pass and said it Best and Major League baseball Rob Man for the commissioner, you would be wise to pay attention to him. On the fly Greeny. I don't think that that's possible it all just because we saw how much a money the end spent be, how much time the MBA spent putting its bubble together. Now. In October bubble. A playoff bubble. That seems to be a much more realistic thing for Major League baseball to embrace in the idea that amid this second wave that it had been talking about behind the scenes for for months, MLB saying We gotta end September 27 gotta end because the second wave is coming. If you're that scared about the second wave, put a bubble together. Do it in L. A do it in Texas to it in Phoenix. Do it in Florida doing anywhere. Do it in Dyersville, Iowa, where the fields of Dreams game was supposed to be. I don't care. Just get a bubble together if you want the sanctity of October to exist. Major.

"What a whoop whoop worthy L. Z. Is. Worthy decisions to make about what it is. You're GonNa Watch on any given night. Through. Was Five months of while I movie. Do I watch thirty for thirty during this music? Do I read a book whatever it is and now it's well the Lakers play tonight of the dodgers are playing tonight. The angels are playing tonight Elliot See might have a game on any given night. It just seems like we finally are back into this prioritize. What's more important to bubble in the NBA or the dodgers being down in San Diego? We have decisions to make an glorious. Is Glorious and it's so funny because this is yet one more reason why baseball blew it. Because you're right. There's a whole lot of obstacles, lot of options and put it this way. When the Lakers were playing, I wasn't conflicted. Just going to say that when the Lakers are on I'm not conflicted I'm not trying to decide what's going to be number one. and. I'm a dodger fan, but there was a moment in time. In which the Lakers and dodgers plant at the same time and try to you know gain got most of my balls. I'm not confused I understand what you want but I'm not gonNA sit side of it for a different reason. Here's why. The dodgers are gonNA. Shut down and minute I'm going to get him in while I can. The Lakers are going to get to the end of the line, right the the the Lakers, the entire, NBA I have a really positive feeling about them being successful in this bubble and then going to the NBA finals or at least making deep deep playoff run. The idea is going to finish their season. If if you let me ask you this if all of a sudden ESPN cut into programming right out and said, Rodman just made his announcement fifty, the Twenty Twenty Major League baseball season has been suspended in. Your your response to be. Yeah probably right. I mean we're all waiting for that announcement. We're all waiting here we are so so. I'm getting dodger games while I can because while we have ten of them in the books right now if we got to twenty five or thirty. Yeah. I mean listen. I understand you know what Jeff passing was telling us when he was on about the majestic aspect of it when it was looking like he was going to be a hundred and sixty some games in a bubble. I get back. Not going back to the players. When he was sixty games and not at the very least kicking the tire and I haven't found anyone in my reporting and we haven't had guests guest on with their reporting who has said that baseball came back to them about a bubble when he was sixty games. And that to me is going to destroy this situation because what we talked about we joked about, but it's real. Whether it's Basketball. Both the NBA WNBA Major League Soccer World Team Tennis Nascar of Golf. What has been fairly consistent is that when you're able to have a bubble of some sort. You can actually get to the finish line. It may not be the way you wanted it to be, but you can at least get there. Like major league soccer's still had some hiccups. There were teams could participate, but they got to the finish line. Right. Floating centers had some players who couldn't compete, but they got to the finish line. We know about you know lemon pepper Williams and his situation, but it doesn't look like they're not gonna get to the finish. Line. Baseball and football. Both look as at the finish line is in question because they haven't been willing to put together a plan of isolation bubble ISM if you. which would be everything you could possibly do to guarantee you getting to the finish line yes. No. I'm an avid bubble. List to seal your. Line. Bubble ISM and. I I'm here for both that you you said it if baseball can't get it done and again, you know we don't know for sure but it seems like reading between the lines of everything that's been written about the Florida marlins situation somebody there at something that were supposed to do. Somebody there did something that was one of those things that we've all kind of come to the if you do blank, this is the best way to catch this virus and then brought it back into their clubhouse, and then we know any sort of close quarters like that it's going to go quickly. So that sounds like what is happening there and like you said a million times if you're asking a group of hundreds of young rich people, baseball players in this sense to do the right. Thing just because good luck good luck because somebody having turn on the news on any given night on any your friends instagram feeds or whatever people are out and people are getting together and that's without every. So they're going to do it and what's happening now is not a surprise football. You can't. You can play baseball without social distancing. You look these games other than a runner at first base being held by the first basement. Guys aren't anywhere near each other they're just not it is A. Very. Naturally Social Distance Sport the center fielder right fielder. There are one hundred feet apart from each other. The second base shortstop are forty feet apart from one another. It's a natural game for social distancing to be able to play. So if you could eliminate going out to pick up something to eat air quotes, you would have a chance to get that thing football. There's no chance because when you're tackling and huddling in meeting and screaming and sweating and bleeding and everything that goes along with football I just don't see how that's going to happen. Basketball will make its baseball went into a bubble would absolutely make the nature of football. I just cannot see you get to the end of the line. I can't see it either but I, definitely, I can see if you are willing to do everything necessary to make happen. And that to me is the big thing. It's like. Are you willing to do everything? You can to get to the finish line which would include some sort of bubble ISM. Troubling. anti-populist. Probably going to be able to finish was makes me wonder. Why are you engaging to begin with your hands? Anti Play Games period, it's simple as best. So I'm trying to figure out what the end game here like is like, what what are we doing here like if you're not trying to do everything within your resources to get to the finish line starting this race when I just cancelled a season Liquor at six o'clock. Tonight. See they got the Utah Jazz coming up next in the coming off a loss of Toronto and. Toronto's really good. It's the beginning of a new format. It's the beginning of a new season in a new place, and I just find myself really in a weird spot to get worked up about them losing this game or really any of these games along the way until we get into the playoffs where they start losing your out, this feels like the preseason to me. Even, though these games technically count towards standings and everything just not get emotionally invested in them at least on it maybe he wants to get to buckle the halfway point it'll feel a little different but right now it feels like you're not off the rust in San. Diego. Vegas or the pond or Pundit Center I should say this feels like that part of the season. Ed. Does delayed is part of the season and I mean. I'm with you don't try this man and I don't know how listeners feel. But it's getting hard for me at the.

There are so many metaphors that I try to avoid. They're out there if you. We've reached that time once again for a writing center ranch featuring peace across the spectrum Dorian Warren what's on your mind? Well, as we've been discussing professional sports, it's back but it's galling to me that the NFL managed to admit it was wrong on protests publicly embrace racial justice and even put two hundred, fifty, million dollars behind those words all without naming Colin? Kaepernick. He deserves an apology from the NFL period. The man took a courageous stand for racial justice. And that simple act got him defacto blackballed by the white owners of the NFL. There's no other way you can explain it and I'm pleased to see the NBA The WNBA Major League baseball players, following his lead and taking a moral stand or in some cases taking a knee or words on the backs of their jerseys for racial justice. But we just recently laid to rest congressman John Lewis and then lauding his courage and our reflections about how acts of. Came out to make fun of him for not wearing masks basically act like he got what he deserved normally as a sound proponent mass you might think that I would like to join the vine and castigate Republicans and Herman Cain in particular for not doing what they can to protect themselves and others from the spread of the steadily virus. But in fact, I like to talk to the people who've been making a big deal out of out of Herman Kane's death. This is not the time not only because a man's life ended entire universe was extinguished when his brain went out and it is not the right time for you or anyone else to talk triumphantly about the death of a man who whatever you think of his politics achieved a great deal in his life starting from very little But also because this is not an effective way to advocate for masks, no one wants to see you. Celebrating the death of another human being gleefully declaring they got what they deserved for my rent I. Agree you shouldn't be mad at Herman Cain. You should be mad at the president not just for failing to fight the virus. But for creating a culture among his supporters shrugged off measures to avoid getting the virus, his supporters should be angriest at all since they're the ones that. The most risk. especially the handful of them who chose to show up to that rally in Tulsa. We've also seen this risk in Congress Jake Sherman at Politico reporting on Republican staffers feel pressured come into the office and to not wear masks when they do Louie Gohmert who's a Texas Republican congressman and a mask skeptic announced this week that he'd been diagnosed with cove announced this in. Person at the office you only learn he had covid because he was supposed to travel to Texas with the president and he got a routine test on which he tested positive and so Gobert who had been often seen around the capital with no mask put himself at risk put others at risk, and this is all something that comes down from the top I realized the president. "Was fortunate all night on ESPN radio I'm Jim bass will the White House says the president spoke with commissioners of the country's sports leagues in a conference call Saturday and told him he recognizes the good work being done by many teams and players to care for their communities and fans dealing with the new coronavirus he called on them to continue efforts to support their fellow Americans during this current challenge a wide range of sports league officials took part in the call including NFL commissioner Roger Goodell as well as NBA commissioner Adam silver president trump believes the NFL season will start on time September tenth with bands in those seats we have to open our country again we want to be doing this for months and months and months would open our country again this country wasn't meant for this if you were if you were but we have to open our country again they want to get back they got to get back I can't do this this sports were designed for the whole concept of our nation wasn't designed for we're gonna have to get back we want to get back soon very soon Adam Schefter on the practicality of that hope Donald Trump had a conference call with major commissioners in multiple sports that started at noon eastern today and in that call president trump told them that he believes the NFL season should start on time in September now again that's great that he thinks that and it's great to the ones that we all want that the truth is is that practical and real can we really make that happen and I don't know that anybody can answer that question we're gonna need an all clear and I don't know whether that's a vaccine or treatment what testing that is done on people before they walk into stadiums but the world as we know it is changing in the world that we know is going to be a very different place and so it's great that president trump watch football to resume in September we don't but we just don't know how practical in real that is at this point time and probably will not for quite some time trump's view of the NFL came during the call including executives from a host of sports leagues as I mentioned NFL NBA Major League Baseball the PGA tour NASCAR among them it was one league executive that apparently was not on the call which is puzzling to Taylor Twellman how do you have the NBA WNBA Major League Baseball NFL NHL PGA UFC WWE NASCAR Major League Soccer and you don't have mark Emmert the NCAA on thank you this is what this is why it's so difficult for me to be optimistic for longer than five minutes because the moment I use my brain and start thinking about who's doing the advice who's giving me advice who's talking what's real news what's fake news and whatnot your love said okay well then what's the truth it's going to come out ten hours later or the next day twenty hours it's just a week that's why I'm struggling with it all yeah as far as trump's optimism or hope that games in the NFL and beyond will be played sometime soon Myron Medcalf on game day does not see the same picture while I'm average everyone it seems wants to be helpful at this juncture in a bigger an ideal world football would start on time college football football you'll be able to come back but I don't see the path to that method that to me is the thing that everyone's wrestling with is I think you have a lot of power brokers to feel like they have the power to to move forward but until we get the green light to put people in stadiums and to get things back rolling again I'm not sure how it happened and it just feels like we're on two different paths where you've got out of the global leaders who want to get things going again but the reality of feels like with everything we've seen just in the last mon it's it's hard for me to look forward and think that everything will be normal this fall all of these ideas are the kind of a did you come up with when you want to get around the current circumstance but I just don't know how realistic any obvious do you know how do you get everybody in one place and minimize risk I mean that to me is the thing what do you deal with a hundred people or seventy thousand can you tell them that they're safe you know I don't know how anybody gets to that point in general with the snow out of the country but I do think the NBA and NFL all these leagues considering the money on the line will exhaust every opportunity and every option before they say we can't go for but it just it just doesn't feel like anything is realistic about NFL and college football starting on time at this point Adam Schefter also reporting high level officials from multiple teams are preparing for a virtual draft from their homes a final decision is pending on teams holding the draft that deep President Donald Trump tells sports commissioners he is hopeful NFL season will open on time

"Will the White House says the president spoke with commissioners of the country's sports leagues in a conference call Saturday and told them he recognizes the good work being done by many teams and players the care for their communities and fans dealing with the new coronavirus she called on them to continue efforts to support their fellow Americans during this current challenge a wide range of sports league officials took part in the call including NFL commissioner Roger Goodell as well as NBA commissioner Adam silver president trump believes the NFL season will start on time September tenth with fans in those seats we have to open our country again we want to be doing this for months and months and months would open our country again this country wasn't meant for this if you were if you were but we have to open our country again they want to get back they got to get back I can't do this this sports were designed for the whole concept of our nation wasn't designed for women have to get back we want to get back soon very soon Adam Schefter on the practicality of that hope Donald Trump had a conference call with major commissioners in multiple sports that started at noon eastern today and in that call president trump told them that he believes the NFL season should start on time in September now again that's great that he thinks that and it's great to be ones that we all want that the truth is is that practical and real can we really make that happen and I don't know that anybody can answer that question we're gonna need it all clear and I don't know whether that's a vaccine or treatment or testing that is done on people before they walk into stadiums but the world as we know it is changing in the world that we know is going to be a very different place and so it's great that president trump watch football to resume in September we don't but we just don't know how practical in real that is at this point time and probably will not for quite some time trump's view of the NFL came during the call including executives from a host of sports leagues as I mentioned NFL NBA Major League Baseball the PGA tour NASCAR among them it was one league executive that apparently was not on the call which is puzzling to Taylor Twellman how do you have the NBA WNBA Major League Baseball NFL NHL PGA UFC WWE NASCAR Major League Soccer and you don't have mark Emmert the NCAA on thank you this is what this is why it's so difficult for me to be optimistic for longer than five minutes because the moment I use my brain and start thinking about who's doing the advice who's giving me advice who's talking what's real news what's fake news and whatnot your love said okay well then what's the truth it's going to come out ten hours later or the next day twenty hours it's just a that's why I'm struggling with it all yeah as far as trump's optimism or hope that games in the NFL and beyond will be played sometime soon Myron Medcalf on game day does not see the same picture one I'm Alex everyone it seems wants to be helpful at this juncture in a bigger an ideal world football would start on time college football football you'll be able to come back but I don't see the path to that method that to me is the thing that everyone's wrestling with theirs I think you have a lot of power brokers who feel like they have the power to to move forward but until we get the green light to put people in stadiums and to get things back rolling again I'm not sure how it happened and it just feels like we're on two different paths where you got out of the hopeful leaders who want to get things going again but the reality of feels like with everything we've seen just in the last month it's it's hard for me to look for to think that everything will be normal this fall all of these ideas are the kind of a did you come up with when you want to get around the current circumstance but I just don't know how realistic any of that is you know how do you get everybody in one place and minimize risk I mean that to me is the thing what do you deal with a hundred people or seventy thousand can you tell them that they're safe you know I don't know how anybody
