Human rights? China won that Winter Olympics battle. Almost.

"When three time Olympian Gus Kenworthy took the remarkable perhaps even brave decision to speak out against human rights atrocities while still in China at the Winter Games the bushy skill also proved that all the athletes have they chosen perhaps could have used the Olympic platform to pipe up to but the limitations with any qualms about chasing medals in a country accused of genocide against its Muslim Uighur population and the other abuses kept their views on these topics to themselves for the duration of their stay a perhaps the good reason they face vague but as it turned out deployed Chinese threats of punishment and constant surveillance I'm Charles de Ledesma

Washington Post Corroborates NBC's Lack of China Abuses

"Now the Washington compost is reporting that NBC which holds the exclusive broadcast rights for the Winter Olympics There's not made these issues a prominent feature of a coverage over the past two weeks And neither is the Washington compost for that matter But since the opening ceremony the post Paul farhi reported that he has been in a fine any example of an NBC Olympics announcer discussing the Chinese Communist Party's human rights atrocities I would ask Paul farhi if that is his name If the human rights atrocities by the communist Chinese against the Uyghurs and we have seen photos of these inhumane conditions and so forth have been on the cover of The Washington Post more than once or twice Far he and his piece the other day wrote that he reached out to an NBC sports spokesperson to ask for examples of the networks continued focus on these issues And it's coverage of Olympic events but beyond comments made by NBC announcers Mike Tariq and he was yanked He was yanked and Savannah Guthrie in addition to other panelists on February 4 NBC couldn't provide further support for NBC's assertion that it has extensively covered these issues Far he went on to explain that NBC also cited report a week ago about the Chinese tennis star in three time Olympian who's been the subject of international attention He noted NBC has also said it hasn't requested an interview with her Despite her presence at times just a few feet from NBC's cameras at the game So NBC has demonstrated that it is nothing more than a shill for the communist Chinese much like Thomas Friedman And much like Trudeau up in Canada the Biden family the Pelosi family the McConnell family And on and on and

"Wondering. No surprise, the second week of the Beijing Winter Olympics has brought us some more incredible performances. It's got to be tied on the outside. I think Jackson's got the gold medal that kalina just wins on the outside, but it's Aaron Jackson's gold medal. But it has also brought more controversy. 15 year old Russian figure skater Camilla Vallejo just finished competing in the women single skating short program, despite testing positive for an illegal performance enhancing substance. Today, we break down the scandals and the storylines that you may have missed as we head into the final weekend of the winter games. From what are you in the athletic? I'm under skeleton. "Chaired by the disaster that is the TV ratings of the genocide games. It appears to me that Americans are voting with their eyes and refusing to watch a game stayed at a stage by a genocidal regime seeking a propaganda victory. Do you agree with my assessment? Yeah, I really think that that is at least part of it. I mean, it has to be some explanation because the ratings are much lower and I think it's probably discussed that everybody feels about China in general. I don't know that it's focused on Xinjiang province and the agars, but just generally the way that Beijing is throwing its weight around in the region in the world. Well, I

"Olympic first, and it goes to Denmark in men's hockey. The two victory over the Czech Republic in their first ever Olympic game. You heard that correctly in their first Olympic game ever, Denmark's men's team beat the powerhouse Czech Republic, things we did not see coming. This. Well, as someone who is half Mexican, I have to quickly share another story of an unlikely Olympian. Donovan chorio is the first Mexican to compete in the Olympics and figure skating and 30 years. Wow. Now, he trains in Leon Juan huao, where the average temperature is about 74°. So you can imagine that there aren't many ice rinks as the sport probably isn't the most popular. So what he does is he trains at a shopping mall in Leon among 11 to 14 year old girls. I just gotta say that's the strangest training method that I've heard since pushing a car up and down the street during COVID lockdown with Jamaican bobsled team. And shout out to carbo loading at the food court. Exactly. But even if he doesn't meddle, his goal is actually to prepare for the next Olympics. So what he's saying is in the end, I take the Beijing Winter Olympics as a process of preparation, training, and a test because my goal is to focus on the future and the next Olympics. And lastly guys, I know we've spent this whole episode talking about the amazing athletes competing in Beijing. But I think the real winner of this Olympics is not an athlete. It's not even a person, and it's not even real. It's a cartoon panda and what I think is in an astronaut suit. And his name is Bing dwen dwen. He's the mascot of the 2022 winter games. Apparently the precious panda is simply too lovable. All over Beijing, souvenirs featuring the 2022 winter games icon are selling out fast the Beijing organizing. Guys, I'm a sucker for mascots and cute fuzzy things. I mean, I am a self proclaimed crazy cat lady after all. True. So I'm kind of not surprised that thing Gwen has been the biggest hit this year. Can we get that bear on the halfpipe maybe and see what happens? Can we get that bear on the lead? Yes, yes, please. All right, well, that is a wrap. Thanks for listening everyone from wondering in the athletic on Tiffany osinski..

"Story. I want to give someone the point. Let me just try to. Can you tell us what the name rhymes with? And then we'll just keep guessing. Rhymes with smell. Mel? Yes. Wow. So this story is so funny but sad. So I didn't know until this week, there's more than one Groundhog Day groundhog. We think of Pakistani Phil as the guy that he is, but Phil has a New Jersey cousin named Mel, who was also a groundhog used to predict whether there'll be an early spring or an extra long winter. This week, the day before groundhog's day, Mel died. Oh my God. And because it's winter and the other groundhogs are hibernating, this town in New Jersey was like, yeah, we're not doing groundhogs today this year, because we can't get another one. Sorry, RIP Mel. Wow. Is that an omen? That's really sad. 6 more weeks of spring, 6 more weeks of winter. Ha ha, 6 more months of anxiety. You're welcome, America. It feels to me in the same category as the annual White House turkey pardon. Where I'm just like, leave those animals alone. Send them to a wildlife refuge or whatever. Like leave them alone. Any who? Last one. Jessica at that point? Yeah. I mean, you spoon fed it to me, but thank you. Yes. Yes. Last quote. This is also a fill in the blank. This is a fill in the blank kind of week. I'm okay with it. So you could save copy of the website right now. Unplug your computer from the Internet and play blank every day for years. I mean, are we talking about wurtele? Yeah. We have to be. Yeah. Mortal has become a recurring bit on this show. Most of the team that makes its been a minute is obsessed. And there's a new world headline. It feels like every day. The headline this week is that the word game taken the nation by storm. It is, gosh, probably two or three weeks after becoming a hit, it's been purchased by The New York Times. For low 7 figures. And I gotta say, as a worlder, I didn't know how to feel about it. How do y'all feel about it? I'm nervous about the paywall. Right. Well, here's the thing about this quote. This was an Internet person saying, along with other Internet people, oh, hold up, you can actually save the game to your computer right now. This quote came from Twitter user Aaron reiki. And he said that world because it was made public and downloadable from the start, you can just right click and save the code for world to your computer right now. And then open up that code and a browser window and play yourself in perpetuity. It's genius. That's amazing. Right? Yeah, I love that. So congratulations to The New York Times. You purchased a game for millions of dollars that I'm going to keep playing for free. Congratulations. You played yourself. You and everyone listened to this right click on mortal. It's all over for The New York Times. I mean, I say this like I'm gonna ever right click and download some HTML code. That is not my vibe. I'm not doing that. Well, y'all do it? I won't, but I'm gonna say that I would love to. But you know, I have to say my least favorite word or one of my least favorite words of all time was the answer and I see what it was, but you guys can probably all tell. This week it's a previous day you can say it. Was it moist? Yes, it was moist. I don't even like that word when it is talking about cake. Like I just, I don't want to talk about moist. No one likes noise. No one likes noise. Yeah. It is true. No one likes moist. Moist is the word that folks don't like to hear. I don't know why people would say the word moist over and over in a podcast. Like moist, that's a word that no one wants to hear ripping me. Moist? Gosh, I hate the word moist. One more time, Sam, one more time. On that note, Jessa, you won. Oh my gosh, thank you. Do I get a tote bag or a T-shirt or a coffee mug? You get to give a speech, go ahead. Oh no, no, that is my least nightmare. I do not want to give the speech, but I do want it to do it back. All I know is, I would hope that my prize for playing this game with y'all would be the chance at a second date with you both on this show sometimes soon. I love y'all show and love chatting with you. Will you come back sometime? We would love that. Anytime anytime, Sam, thank you. Thanks again to Huawei katana and Jessie baker. "Is dating, a series of recorded first dates. The show is called this is dating. He will take katana and Jesse baker or two other producers. Hello. Hey Sam. Hi. How are y'all? Good. How are you? And this show is pretty addictive. In part, because it feels a lot more thoughtful. And nicer than most reality dating shows, I see on TV. This is by design. Jesse and Huawei, when they were making this podcast, they thought really carefully about what reality TV tropes they wanted to avoid, as well as which ones to embrace. The show that most resonated was dating around. You see one person go on three different dates. And the camera cuts from one date to the other. So you see this one person go from drinks to dinner to the after dinner drinks with such ease that you feel like you're watching a movie, not really it doesn't feel like reality show. I brought Jessie and who what they on to talk about how they did it. And what making this show taught the two of them about love and dating. They also shared a little first date advice because they're now kind of experts on the art and science of the first date. There is this very intentional way that you're prompting conversations that give just more of a depth than you would hear in reality TV shows about dating. Besides having the stating coach, talk with folks before the date, when you have the couples go on the date, y'all offer not just color commentary, but a set of icebreaker questions that you've selected for them to go through to lead to a media conversation. Can you tell our listeners a few of those questions that you've picked for some of the dates? Yeah, so usually we try to go from iceberg, things like, okay, the question is are you going to do it? I've never done research on ticklish, but I think it may just be a mindset or I think there must be a mental thing because sometimes I'm a day and I normally like the day before a date would sit down and kind of go through what we know about the two people going on the date so we could both provide questions that are kind of fun, but also give them a chance to explore a part of something we knew about them that the other didn't. So it was sort of like gateway to interesting conversation. I feel like it's questions that you can choose to answer as vulnerably or as high level as you want to. But the idea behind the questions is that over the course of the date, we try to get you to a place of genuine connection. So the questions do get a little bit more intimate and encourage you to be a little bit more vulnerable. And the question that has yielded the best answers is usually what do you usually not confess on a first date? Or what do you usually not tell you your first date? And tell it to me now. Okay. Maybe I will share that I love karaoke. That I have never shared on a first date because a lot of people don't like karaoke. And I like aggressively like karaoke. I'm actually in a karaoke club. Well, then to you both, what is the thing? Oh, God. Y'all would have never confessed on the first date, but after this experience of making a dating show, you might be more open to confess on a first date. Oh man, this is gonna be harder than the quiz coming up. I think I've realized working on the show that everyone worries a little bit or I guess two differing degrees about their desirability. And I would never talk about that on a first date. And it's partly because I think there aren't as many stakes in the game on a first date so you want the other person to think you're attractive or that you're smart or that whatever, but you don't care too too much, but you know at the core, you do want the people you meet and the people that you like to think your desirable. Yeah, yeah. For people listening who are maybe in first 8 land right now. What is it like one first date life hack? You can give them right now that will just improve their first date game period across the board. I think doing something instead of sitting across from each other asking questions is a game changer. Because even though on some level, it might seem like that's what you're doing when you're on a Zoom date for a dating show. You are engaged in this secondary activity that both that's new for both of you. They're usually not sitting the entire date. On one date, we told them to bring, you know, specific list of ingredients. And then on the date, they made drinks together. On another day, they did a scavenger hunt. So I just think not sitting still and expecting the other person to answer your questions is probably the right way to go. I would say coming in with an open mind and forgetting that you didn't like the T-shirt that they wore in the picture on their hinge profile. Come in and clear your mind and screw expectations like the only what you want to get to with a first date is the second date. This doesn't have to be the love of your life, but if you can get to a second date, I think you've done well. Yeah. Did making this show at all change the way the two of you think about love and dating or conceptualize it. So much. I think so. Yeah, I mean, it's just made me so much more compassionate and not put so much pressure on myself or the other person. He would say is the active dater as far as the producers go. I mean, she's the person who is actively going on dates, swiping right and left and doing all of that and where the rest of us are in a kind of different space working on the show. And it was important to us to show growth from the actual data, but the thing that ends up happening because she was working on this show is you also start to hear growth in huet day's life. And there's an episode towards the end of the season that happened much like this where we all jumped on a Zoom to do an edit and she starts playing a voice memo as one does. She sent sent to a man the previous day. And then we just totally dissected that. So yeah, so there's a lot of growth with the staff and not just the daters. Yeah. Sam, Jesse and I met in this very cute way, we met on the train in New York.

"Really care and their actions speak otherwise. Well, and the run up to the games, the Chinese government has been cracking down really hard on political dissent and activism. I assume that has a chill in effect on excitement for the games amongst the locals. What have those crackdowns looked like? This is not new. This is something China does before every major political event, even domestic ones. So they go around, they make sure that anyone who's troublesome is not physically in Beijing or that they're blocked from traveling to Beijing and making trouble. They do that by sending people on essentially forced vacations. Often paid, just get out of the way until the baby pays her over. Yeah. Okay. But you're watched all the time by police. There have been street police on every single corner. They're being much more rigorous about what's being said online. There have been tightened COVID controls as well. And you've heard a lot of grumbling about how the Olympics are making life that much harder in the capital, which has already been an incredibly strict place I can tell you personally to live during a COVID pandemic. Wow. You know, I am wondering just as a human of the world, is it ethical to watch these Olympics? Given the human rights abuses, given the way that Chinese locals are being treated in the run up to these games, given the thought I have that like maybe this shouldn't happen at all from a public health perspective. I don't know, give me some guidance on how to ethically watch this Olympics. Should I even choose to do so? And also same question for you. How are you? I love the tough questions, Emily. Well, I'm going to watch for news purposes. There might be something that happens, and I'll have to cover it. But for the ordinary viewer, I would say go ahead and watch it with that boulder of salt that you've just mentioned. The games are happening no matter what. But there should be a real reckoning about how these games are run, how these bids are designated and what it means for a country to host these games, should there be stronger requirements for, say, an autocratic country like China to host an international sporting event like this. They were not asked to make any improvements to their domestic political structure to freedom of speech to rampant media censorship here, unlike the 2008 Summer Olympics, where they actually did make some superficial changes, at least. So I think there's a real reckoning about whether or not the Olympic Games still have the same significance they did before, whether the International Olympic Committee is as impartial and fair as they claim to be. It is clearly an organization with serious ethical issues that has strong interests to make sure the games happen despite being obligated to autocratic countries like Russia and China, which have hosted the last two winter games. And a sign of just how deeply connected the IOC and the Chinese regime have been for these Winter Olympics. Xi Jinping received the director of the IOC, Thomas Bach a few days ago. And Thomas Bach became the first foreign official to meet with the Chinese leader in more than two years, because Xi Jinping has been in his own little bubble for coronavirus prevention reasons. He hasn't left the country. He hasn't seen foreign leaders, but he did see Thomas Bach, who was allowed to cut the queue and skip quarantine to meet the Chinese leader. That's huge in China. And people take note, they realize that this is now a political event more than anything for the Chinese leadership. So I wonder what the discussion will be around the next Olympic Games and whether it will have the kind of prestige. Personally, I don't think it should. We should be watching world championships and we should not be giving the Olympic aims to host countries with human rights abuses on their political record. Yeah. You know what I might do instead? I might just fire up that NBC John Williams Olympic fame and replace some old good Simone Biles footage. That's the place I want to live at right now, I think. That sounds like right now. Right, it's about self care, no, you get it. You get it. Hey, well, thank you for this chat. I learned a lot from it and I'm sure there are listeners did as well. "15,000 performers, loads of people remember it. They were drummers in their thousands in complete unison. It really was a cultural moment as well as a sporting one. We know they were tone this time. It's going to be a little different, a little more muted. We of course have to reflect on the last couple of years the pandemic that we've all been through. But then the moment that everyone looks forward to, isn't it? The lighting of the flame will expect something stunning, I'm sure. But as ever, we won't know until we see it. Of course. So excited. So excited because everyone loves an opening ceremony. I love the Winter Olympics, something so magical about it. This is the first time team GB will have a woman chef the mission with the Georgina harland, so tell us the chef mission. What does that mean? And what her role is and just how historic and important this is. Oh, I think it's incredible. I mean, it's all about empowering women to be who they want and to go into sport in a kind of business side and be the very best. And she's a former athlete who has all this incredible personal insight into how to be the best in her form as an athlete, and she's bringing that all into her role as chef the mission and leading this team. I think it's really important to have female role models. We've shown in sport actually that we have got incredible other role models who are doing the best in the sport. We've got Katharine Granger. The chair of UK sport. We've got Barbara slater director of sport here at the BBC. And I think it's just really highlights that we need to be with the president with this global movement of showing women that they can be whoever they want to be regardless of what they were born as. So it's just I think it's amazing. And so many skills from bringing as an athlete who had so much success, bronze medal in 2004..

"House speaker Nancy Pelosi has now quote instructed U.S. athletes all of them to not speak out against communist China's human rights abuses during the Winter Olympics because it might make China angry So who are you representing now You represent America You representing China Quote I would say to our athletes you are there to compete Pelosi said in a in part during testimony before the congressional executive commission on China Do not risk incurring the anger of the Chinese government because they are ruthless I know there's a temptation on the part of some to speak out while they are there I respect that but I also worry about what the Chinese government might do to their reputations to their families The commission's hearing on the eve of the opening ceremonies for the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing was organized as a platform for Pelosi and several activists to highlight China's human rights record including reports of forced labor and acts of genocide against ethnic communities in China as well as suppression of democratic protests in Hong Kong and religious repression Of Tibet's Buddhists Pelosi encouraged the athletes to quote be safe this is the Speaker of the House the United States of America You could argue the most powerful Democrat in Washington because she's in my opinion more powerful than Joe Biden just from a cognitive standpoint Telling American athletes shut

"Of people. What can you tell us about this year's men's ski team? The name to watch might be Bryce Bennett, he's a 6 foot 7 Californian who apparently chases bears in his free time, which is great. But he won a World Cup race this December, which was in the downhill, which is the first time a U.S. man had done that in four or 5 years. So that of itself is enough to think he's got a shot in the downhill. He was a think he was 16th in South Korea in that event. The other big name on the men's side is Ryan Cochrane Siegel. He won a super G race. He was a top ten finisher overall in the 2021 World Cup circuit. So those two are probably the best hopes, but it is a weaker spot than usual for the U.S. men since the days of bodie Miller. Snowboarding is a fan favorite at the Winter Olympics, and it's a sport where the U.S. has traditionally done very well. Who are the key names on the men's and women's sides this time around? Yeah, they've done great. In a lot of ways it was a sport made for the U.S. to win medals, snowboarding, obviously, as a rich history here, 31 of the 120 medals that have been handed out all time and snowboarding have gone to the U.S. so expect a lot more of them here. This is another area where you have probably the other biggest name that people recognize, which is Shaun White. This is probably his last games. When my abilities sort of decline and I'm not performing at my fullest, there's some pretty scary consequences. And I'm like flying, you have a 20 feet through the air and hoping to land on my feet. So he's on the downslope of his career. He was a discretionary pick to make this team, which basically means a captain's prerogative pick, but even F-35, he should still be a contender. The two probably most exciting names to watch are Chloe Kim on the women's side in red Gerard, both of them were gold medal winners in South Korea. After 17 year old gold medalist Chloe Kim dominated the half pipe here in Pyeongchang this week with the near perfect run, she quickly became America's golden girl. Chloe Kim, you're a living champion. Lindsay Jackie bellus is a 5 time world champion who wants silver and Torino in 2006. She missed a metal by .003 seconds in 2018. This will be her 5th Olympics. There's a few people actually in these Olympics who are competing for a 5th time. So cool story there as well, but definitely a sport to watch if you want to see American medals. Many people's favorite event at the Winter Olympics is figure skating, which is also an area where Team USA has often done quite well. Zach, what can you tell us about the team this year? Yeah, the name to watch on the men's side is Nathan Chen. He was a strong contender for a medal in South Korea, but he fell during his short program skate that cost him a shot. You know, I'd never been in that position before. And I was so low in the ranking. I just wanted to get back on my team myself. Build up my confidence again, know that I can still do it. He is expected to medal again here in Beijing, a gold medal favorite even. So definitely somebody to watch on the men's side for the women. We've got Karen Chen, who is the returning headliner from 2018. She finished 11th there in the individual Mariah bell is the reigning U.S. national champion and she'll make her first Olympic appearance. It means a lot because something that I've been working for a really long time and it's really amazing and I'm just really grateful. Sorry. And there's a Lisa Liu who's 16 years old. She won gold at the 2019 and 20 U.S. championships, then took fourth last year and she had to withdraw from this year's event early after testing positive for COVID. But another sport where there's a lot of names that could be much more popular in your house in a couple of weeks for sure. One of the more heartwarming stories that we've seen leading up to the games involves two speed skaters, Aaron Jackson and Brittany Bo, who are both heading to Beijing. So Zach, can you explain exactly what happened there? Yeah, so Aaron Jackson is the top ranked speed skater in the world at the 500 meter in the long track. She slipped during U.S. trials and was about to miss out on the team entirely, which is crazy, but that's the way it works. And Bo, who is a friend of hers on the team, qualified at that distance as well as the 1000 meter and the 1500 meter. But Bo gave up her spot on the 500 meter qualifying roster to Aaron Jackson, so that Jackson could go to Beijing, which is just an awesome story. So it's bigger than just me. It's Team USA. Erin has a shot to bring home a medal. Hopefully a gold medal. And it's my honor to give her that opportunity. She's earned it, and she deserves it. Beau has since got that spot back, and she will race also in the 500 meter because some other nations didn't fulfill all their other spots, which opened up another slot for her. But certainly it was an awesome story and Aaron Jackson certainly more than deserving of getting the opportunity to go. I'm beyond grateful and humbled and just I'm happy and yeah, I've grown up with Brittany I've known her like almost my whole life, you know, growing up looking up to her in Ocala and like I've always known what an incredible person she is. And now it's just, yeah, it's really showing. Zack what other sports an athletes are you most excited to be keeping an eye on in the coming weeks? Well, I'm a big curling fan. John Schuster, who's the skip for the U.S. team, led them to gold in South Korea in 2018 after three tries before that that ended much less ceremoniously. He's back again, another one of those people who's going to a 5th Olympics, which is just a crazy feat. So that's going to be a fun thing to watch. Curling is also the first thing you can watch because it actually starts before the opening ceremony on Wednesday with the mixed doubles event. Bob sled always a fun thing, I think there's a new U.S. team member named Kaley Humphries. She was racing for Canada prior to this. Kayleigh humphreys alleges this man, her coach, Todd Hayes verbally and mentally abused her during the 2017 2018 season. And it's certainly not fair that I'm getting punished time and time again. I ended up leaving the Canadian team getting U.S. citizenship and is now on the U.S. team. Humphreys is clearly torn about this, representing Canada has defined her career. Online, some have characterized her move as a betrayal, but among many Canadian athletes she's found support. She won gold in South Korea so that could be another gold medal pick up if you will for the U.S.. And then in short track speed skating, there's a couple people to watch. Joey mantia is a name that you may have remembered from past Olympics, medal winner before metal contender again this year. Then there's Jordan stoles who's a 17 year old phenom. I think I've used that word three times on this podcast. Jordan stalls just keeps doing it. Race after race after race for him to be able to generate that much speed over 500 meters. It's just a blast watching him. He's a prodigy. There's a lot of good stories out there, and I think there's a lot of athletes who are sort of on that cusp of by the time we do this again in Milan in 2026, a lot more people will be talking about him in a lot more notoriety around their names, but also mixed in with some athletes who might be doing it for the last time and worth a watch on the way out. Well, reporting phenom Zak Pearce. Thanks so much for joining us today. That's kind of you. Thank you for having me. It was a pleasure. You can find more Olympic coverage from Sean Fitzgerald, Zack Pearce, and many others at.

"China. The U.S. State Department accusing the Chinese authorities of rounding up up to 2 million Uyghurs and other ethnic minorities into internment camps. Facing atrocities ranging from sexual assault to psychological torture to cultural brainwashing and death. The Chinese government has denied any wrongdoing and saying their safety and national security concerns. But the U.S. State Department has called it a genocide. Every single provision in the United Nations genocide convention violated by the Chinese government's treatment of Uyghurs and other Muslim minorities in Xinjiang. So abuses of majority, Muslim population in the northwest, to suppression of pro democracy movements and activists in Hong Kong, thousands of protesters on Hong Kong street, clashing with riot police. Rubber bullets and tear gas fired into the chaos umbrellas and plastic bottles that only defense. To repression in Tibet to actions around Taiwan, you throw all of that against a movement that's supposed to promote togetherness and the world is very much not together as it congregates for the Olympics. I know that the International Olympic Committee often stays silent when it comes to these kinds of debates around human rights abuses. And the IOC has awarded the Olympic Games to China twice now, as you mentioned in the last 14 years and wants to Russia, what if anything has the IOC had to say about these latest accusations being leveled against China? And their decision to allow the games to be hosted in Beijing. Yeah, I mean, the Olympic charter expressly states that things like abuse aren't to take place. So in 1970, the International Olympic Committee officially expelled South Africa from competing in the Olympic Games. Sport is based on the ethos of play and competition being fair and equal for all. And that is not deemed possible in this country which practices apartheid. That was the first time such a move had been taken. And it was in direct response to global pressure over apartheid. Obviously, the racist policies that governed South Africa at the time. South Africa wasn't welcome back into the Olympic fold until 1992. So that was a period of decades where the IOC did, again, under global pressure, take a stand in a political arena. It was pointed out by Jules boycott who's a Professor of Pacific university in Oregon that it might have been a little bit easier back then because South Africa doesn't exactly how old the geopolitical status that China does today. But the IOC has been quiet and it's been in line with honestly FIFA, which is the world governing body for soccer that the next World Cup is in Qatar. And the allegations of severe maltreatment of labor in building those stadiums and that's at the FIFA level and at the IOC as well, there are a lot of questions about looking the other way about the bid process, which has been rejigged and altered since obviously Beijing was named the 2022 host. Historically speaking, the Olympics have, of course, been staging ground for political statements. This year, there are a handful of nations, including the U.S., Canada, Australia and the UK that have announced political boycotts of the games. Can you explain exactly what that will look like? I mean, diplomatic boycotts means that civil servants elected officials. They're not going to be going there. It's the first time Americans have boycotted an Olympics since 1980, when president Jimmy Carter refused to send a delegation to the Moscow games in protest of the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, but Carter kept American athletes home too, not just officials. So you're not going to see Joe Biden waving to a crowd. You're not going to see Kamala Harris waving to a crowd. You're not going to see Justin Trudeau or any members of his cabinet there. You're just sending the athletes. So it's kind of a half in half out boycott. So it's very much symbolic. China also responding tonight calling the U.S. move a serious offense to the 1.4 billion Chinese people. Yeah, David, they are calling this one pure political provocation and they are now threatening countermeasures though they're not specifying what those are as for The White House they say it was not an option to not send American athletes to these games games that they have been training their entire lives for. You know, some countries because of COVID travel restrictions probably weren't going to send anybody anyway. However, there are others who were as of last week still on the fence. I believe Germany was still on the fence, and there are others as well, Eastern Europe block countries that were sending a full complement of people as would fit under the rules and restrictions of going to Beijing in the middle of the pandemic. So, you recently spoke with a number of current and former athletes about the dilemma that they, as athletes face in situations like this, where they're sort of caught up in the middle of geopolitical storm. Could you tell us who you spoke with and what they had to say? Yeah, I mean, I think one of the most illustrative examples was John Morris. He is a Canadian curler, already a two time Olympian, already a two time gold medal winner. He's going with a mixed doubles partner, Rachel Holman. And what he said is basically look, we're going to compete. Where we compete and how we compete is in a reflection on any support we may or may not have for the governing regime on the ground in that country. If we were to start focusing on that, we would lose focus on what we're there to do, which is compete in which is to win. So I think what he said is they basically try and keep blinders on. Diane Jones kind of was a Canadian Olympian. She was a pentathlon who was forced to skip in 1980 because Canada had joined the boycott of the 1980 games in Moscow. And she said that athletes shouldn't be used as pawns in politics that they're there to compete, let them compete and have politics separate. But I mean, you take a look at, for instance, drew Nielsen is a former Canadian snowboarder and Olympian said that athletes should be ashamed of themselves for going over there because it provides implicit support for the regime by helping them use sports and this grand spectacle to sort of wash over the details of the more serious real world allegations. Well, on top of all the geopolitical controversies, these Olympics are also as we mentioned, taking place during what is still a global pandemic. And in a city with incredibly strict COVID policies. And we've heard this phrase closed loop thrown around quite a bit to describe how the games are going to work. So what is your understanding of how things will work on the ground in Beijing? Yeah, so the closed loop means you're not going to be able to take a day trip if you're an athlete from the athletes village. There's a series of areas and venues where athletes, media, sponsors, anybody who's a part of it will be inside and sort of an invisible wall around the rest of Beijing. Not one giant bubble, so much as multiple bubbles connected by dedicated shuttles. Within the capital city, there are several hotels and venues, plus the Olympic village that are only for credentialed participants. And that's the same in the lower areas where curling some of those sports would be played and up in the mountains where there'll be skiing and luge. Then there are the mountain venues. On the outskirts of Beijing, connected by high-speed train and highways. So as to maintain the separation, even the railcars are divided, and the closed loop buses given.

"Never been an Olympics quite like the Beijing games in that we're talking about staging an optional sporting spectacle under coronavirus pandemic conditions in a country that is a serial human rights abuser that is long acted in ways that clash with the lofty principles that are enshrined in the Olympic charter, and that may well blunt the exciting zeitgeist of athlete activism that we've witnessed in recent years. That's professor Jules boycot of Pacific university talking about the spectacle that is about to begin in Beijing China, also known as the 2022 Winter Olympics. Today, with the opening ceremony just days away, we're looking at the controversies around the host nation and the challenges that COVID will present at the games. Then, on a bit happier note, we dive into the stories and athletes to follow on Team USA, including a speed skater who gave up her spot to a teammate. Yeah, it's just the spirit of the Olympics. And being a great teammate and yeah, so it's bigger than just me. It's Team USA. From one day in the athletic, I'm otters kelto. It's Tuesday, February 1st, and this is the lead. Sean Fitzgerald, good to have you with us today. Thanks for having me. So, Sean, the arrival of these Winter Olympics feels kind of strange to me on several levels. First, the Tokyo Summer Olympics just wrapped up 5 and a half months ago after getting delayed by a year because of COVID. We're still in this global pandemic and Beijing has incredibly strict COVID policies, which we'll get into in a little bit here. And then there's a ton of controversy around China even being allowed to host these Olympics in the first place. So I want to start with that last part. Can you just remind us of some of the controversies swirling around this year's games? How long is this podcast? Does it go for three days? Do we have three days of time for this? It might. Okay. Well, I'll take a deep breath and try and answer it in one. Beijing hosted the summer games in 2008. For a long time. China has dreamed of opening its doors and inviting the world's athletes to Beijing for the Olympic Games. And it is obviously highly unusual that they would get a game so soon after. Basically a bunch of other countries sort of raised their hand, mostly in Western Europe, but then when the costs from the most recent games came in, you take a look at what Sochi was in 2014. You know, you're talking into the billions and billions and billions of dollars, like ruinous amounts of money. The most expensive sporting event in history. Now Sochi stadiums and hotels stand mostly empty. The gold and the glories are gone, leaving the city and its surroundings with a tarnished.

"Investors in the coming week I'm John Tucker in New York of later in our program the Bank of England is in inflation fighting mode as it gets ready to meet in the coming week How far is it going to go First the Olympics kick off in China in the coming week It symbolizes a lot for the country but it's somewhat problematic as well The moral is going to Hong Kong over day break Asia host Brian Curtis at his colleague Doug Chris John with the Winter Olympics in China approaching Doug and I thought it would be a good idea to take a look at how the country has changed from the China of 2008 when Beijing hosted the summer games and the China of today when it stages the winter game Now back in 2008 the summer games were seen through the prism of China's rise on the global stage whereas this year the lens appears to be focused on China's disregard for civil liberties its treatment of the Uyghurs in xiang and its handling of Hong Kong But how much is really changed Well we asked John Liu Bloomberg senior executive editor for a Greater China to join us for this discussion John the biggest change since 2008 would seem to be that Xi Jinping is president He's general secretary chairman of the Chinese military commission and the author of Xi Jinping thought Can you expound on how she is making a difference in how China sees the outside world and how it's perceived by the outside world So in 2008 she was actually vice president at the time And he was actually responsible for putting on the games So for the day to today decision making around the 2008 Olympics he was actually the person in charge And so he was intimately involved Obviously his position has influences impact as much greater today I think China now in China looking into the future 5 ten years is going to be one shit by Xi Jinping That's without a doubt Today's China though I think just more globally economically the size of the country is substantially larger in 2008 It was still smaller than Japan's economy Now it's about three times Japan's economy In 2008 it was about a third the size of the U.S. U.S. economy And now many people expect it could surpass the U.S. by as soon as 2031 if things go China's way So against the backdrop of these games obviously is the pandemic where two years into it now we know that it originated in China How Xi Jinping do you manage so much attention on your country while you're still in the grips of this pandemic Well I think she will be trying to show the world that China is a good actor on the global stage And so I think you will see flicks to donations of vaccines to developing countries You will see flicks of Chinese doctors or Chinese aid around the world You will see probably mentions of China's role in climate change and trying to control trying to control greenhouse gases globally I think what China wants to achieve through these games is for the world to be more comfortable with a bigger stronger more China which is going to have a bigger voice and global affairs and to be basically make room for it John I wanted to tell you a little anecdote as I framed the next question I think it was 1982 I read Fox Butterfield's book alive in the bitter sea and it's what caused me to want to go to China to go to Taiwan to be in Asia And I remember a line that Fox Butterfield had about how when Chinese looked at the west they either looked up or down They put the west on a pedestal for all its achievements in economic growth and in science and such But they looked down sometimes on the west in terms of culture and food and many other aspects And I'm wondering today if this China see itself as an equal to the west or does it actually see itself as superior now I think that's a little hard to say what I think we can say pretty surely is that the attitude that China has and how it sees the west has changed dramatically since 2008 And that primarily was the result of the great financial crisis in 2008 which Lehman Brothers filed for bankruptcy I think three weeks after the closing ceremonies in Beijing in 2008 And so through that process you had prior to that event policymakers senior officials in China really thinking hey you know the western democratic model they've got something there They've been able to achieve all this economic success to improve the livelihoods of their people But then through that process you basically try to saw how it could all terribly unravel And in juxtaposition China was able to get through the crisis much better than the west you had China put out this 4 trillion UN stimulus in November of 2008 China has since 2007 been the largest contributor to global growth for the last 15 years and not the U.S. And so from that point forward I think you started to see more and more Chinese officials and people just in the public sort of wondering maybe our system is as good or maybe even better So we know that president Xi Jinping has been moving to secure what would be a precedent to find third term as leader When we get beyond the Olympics and the attention shifts to the national People's Congress in March what will she tried to do Will he build on the momentum that he is trying to establish during the Olympic Games So China announced this goal of doubling the size of its economy by 2035 If it's able to do that it will be the largest economy in the world It will surpass the United States And the leadership based on what they've said publicly expect the period between now and that 2035 target to be difficult to be tension filled And so that has been the argument for why China needs a strong leader Why China needs continuity when it comes to leadership and why Xi Jinping might be the right person for the job We should find out if he's been able to officially secure that additional term at the end of this year when they have the Communist Party Congress That'll probably be in late October November that time frame If and this is widely expected that she will secure that additional term I think you will see a China that is trying to ensure its rises uninhibited but also trying to ensure that those its neighbors other countries around the world are not going to be spooked by its rise are going to be accepting of that change John thanks so much for taking out the time to be with us John Liu who is Bloomberg senior executive editor for "This is here and now A Winter Olympics like no other is coming in February which means yes to ultra strict COVID rules in China and know to NHL hockey players as the league is opted out And a few new sports will debut including something called the monobob It is a one person bobsled hurtling down the icy track at speeds of up to 75 mph Cynthia appia will be competing for team Canada in the mono bob as well as the two person bobsled And she joins us now from Latvia where she's training ahead of this weekend's world championship races I said there Hi Scott How's it going Oh it's great Okay mono bub This is your chance to educate and evangelize This is a one person thing doing it all right Pushing and driving what is the key to doing this well Yeah essentially explain it pretty well Mono bob is a singular person event where the brakeman and the pilot roller combined into one So it's mostly pilots that are competing in this event And you push private at the same time And I would say the key component to doing well in the event is fast pushes and consistent drives If you're not thinking both it's hard to really get on top of the podium And where is your edge My edge is definitely in the pushes where I kind of like lose I guess a lot of my races is the fact that I'm not consistent in driving right now I'm going against a field of phenomenal female athletes that have been driving for 8 to ten plus years and I'm now just entering into my fourth year How does the Mona bob differ from say a two person or a four person bobsled Since there's less weight I've read that the mama bob It may not hug the curves as much and you can spin out more easily perhaps It's definitely a much more precise sled to drive The margin of error is that much smaller So because there isn't that brakeman to help counteract that back axle or the back runners that we have they do tend to skid a lot more So you'll see in races you know sometimes we'll flop out of corners instead of coming off smoothly and will tend to like veer off course and slide sideways or just versus going straighten down the pipe like you should Now monos letting bob sledding Winter Olympics in general can be wiped dominated sports But you have quite the story Your parents emigrated to Canada from Ghana they worked in factories and you grew up in public housing So how did you find your way into this sport It honestly like it was a fluke And if you talk to the majority of the people that are in bobsleigh a lot of people kind of have a similar story where they kind of just fell into the sport Very few people wake up going I'm gonna be a bobsledder when they're like 6 years old My story is very similar to a lot of current athletes where we came from track and field That seems to be the biggest recruiting tool is getting former sprinters former decathletes have athletes and getting them to push obscenely heavy sled on an ice cream I came from throwing with hammer and chocolate being my specialty And you know the Ontario team which is the promise that I live in was having a dry land test camp at my university and I decided on a whim to just try it out and I kind of got the ball rolling for me Well I want to ask you about being a black woman in this sport The American man and bob and bob's letter Elena Myers Taylor has talked about coaches that she's heard making racist statements that there were no good black drivers in black athletes needed to stay in the back of the sled Have you been treated differently because of the color of your skin I've been very fortunate in that my team Elise forward facing has never treated me as such In front of my face they've been very supportive especially since I switched from the brakeman world to the pilot role But I can't say that that's the same for everyone within the sport unfortunately I kind of tie it to football with a lot of people believing that black athletes can't be good quarterbacks That's kind of like the belief of black athletes can't be great pilots and that our role is strictly to be brakeman and crew And for me I don't go out there and verbalize that I'm here to change how you think about me and people who look like me I let my results and my driving ability to speak for itself The fact that I've been able to amass such achievements it's a testament to obviously my determination and physicality and just my belief in myself and obviously having my federation on the Canadian team helping me and supporting me along the way But it's definitely out there and it's something that needs to be changed And it's going to be a long road but black athletes were slowly making our inroads whether it's coaching whether it's mechanics whether it's being a pilot a brakeman and even in skeleton or seeing a lot of black athletes coming into that sport skeleton is our sister sport So we're trying to open up with a possibilities for any athlete regardless of race could be Well you do describe you do talk about your results doing the speaking for you But I understand you were history major in school and surely you have an idea that this is groundbreaking here and that there will be black and Brown girls and boys watching you with a different kind of interest Is there a certain message perhaps just from your actions that you want them to take from watching you Yeah I've always been a proponent that representation matters I know for some people who've never had to deal with not seeing themselves in different realms that it sounds like who we I guess you could say But you know my first interaction with bossy I feel like for a lot of people is the movie cool runnings And as silly as a movie can be at times you know it really does show that representation factor of like black athletes coming from a tropical nation and sliding up with the best of them For me you know that kind of moves on to watching the Vancouver 2010 games and seeing Shelley Anne Brown winning a silver medal as a break woman for team Canada and seeing the possibilities are endless I was like that's cool Up until I saw Shelley Ann Again outside of cool runnings I really didn't put it in my head that this was something that any black person could do let alone me But watching Shelly Ann at the Vancouver games I was like Kate you know that's super cool I would like to try that And then it happened that a year later Ontario bobsleigh was at my door or I guess at my university and it was right under my nose and there was an opportunity that I couldn't take Or I couldn't let pass So for me I feel like my message is to kind of chase after your dreams and even if you don't see yourself in others in that current atmosphere or current realm at that point maybe you are that groundbreaker And I hope that you know a little brown boys and girls can watch me and the fellow My fellow black competitors within this sport and see themselves doing something It doesn't have to necessarily be bob slayer skeleton It could be skiing or figure skating or curling You know whatever it is to kind of just break down the walls and break down the barriers and just do something for themselves And you don't have to necessarily be there to kind of shake the table I guess and be groundbreaking.

"Which is the team goes. But you don't have the royal family or politicians go to the games. I mean that is probably the most likely months i do. They wonder if you if you think that if you look at this as joe biden put a new competition between democracy autocracy. I think if you look at the geopolitical tendency in the us and china it's haunted. See that they don't own negro in the coming decades. And i won the weather. We're heading back to actually looking to dynamics you hide in the eighties. When the us boycotted the moscow olympics in one thousand nine hundred and the ussr responded by boycotting the los angeles and nine hundred thousand four. I wonder whatever the ability to separate sport from. Politics is going to be challenged by the fact that we all once more kind of entering era of great power is logical competition. And what your reflections on that. Because obviously we look at the medal g one and your entry into the olympics during that period where there were countries not participating points. Well i don't think i'm going to say anything. To revelatory or particularly revolutionary. When i say that i dislike boycotts the intellectually incoherence and historically illiterate. I mean the very fact that we are still you know talking about troops in one shape or another afghanistan forty years after the attempted. Boycott from jimmy. Carter probably one of the worst presidents in the history of the united states. That did nothing. But i'm actually damage. The ambitions of athletes doesn't really mustard. The irony should have done so look. I don't think you go to any country with your eyes. Closed the very nature of making a judgement about where you're going to take. A sport does inevitably have to be set it in a particular background. But look i'm not. I don't actually believe it's a sensible approach for us to sort of decide. It's a bit of alicarte menu. If we've got to an olympic games we should have ministers that we should have people going to to that country. Because i'm a great believer that no major sporting events actually ever left the country without him one way or another flicking the social political and cultural dial. And you have to be very careful. I mean i remember being the chair of the london organizing committee in two thousand twelve. No we had a full house of countries and diplomatic political representation there but also well aware that there are many countries that came to london. Who probably were holding their nose over. You know some of our own foreign policies so e you've got to be very careful when you pick your sporting relationships predicated on you know here today gone tomorrow. Political structures and leaders. Sport is too important to be used in that way. And actually if it's used well it can. It can be a pretty effective soft power. Thank you thank you james..

"And it's more into running in a track event. In fact speed skating track is four hundred meters long which is the same basic length as a running track. Short-track speedskating is very different. The track is much smaller and designed to fit in a hockey arena. There are no lanes moreover instead of two competitors. They're usually between four to six all racing at the same time. There's a lot of contact jostling for position. Ended is all being done on ice. The thing which short-track speedskating is known for is incredible crashes if someone falls down going around a curve on ice they can take everyone else out with them especially if they're on the inside curve think of a massive nascar crash but instead of cars. It's people wearing ice skates and tight. Lycra racing suits. This is where. I now introduce steven bradbury going into the two thousand. Two winter olympics in salt lake city bradberry was probably australia's greatest short track speed skater. He was on the nineteen ninety four. Men's five thousand meter relay team that won australia's first medal at the world championships. Bronze medal in nineteen ninety-three a silver medal in nineteen ninety four and a gold medal in one thousand nine hundred one all of which were for the five thousand meter relay event. The two thousand and two olympics were his fourth and final olympics while he had sometimes been considered a possible contender for an individual medal and past olympics. You never won anything in two thousand two. He was not on anyone's list of favorites. The one thousand meters was the last short-track speedskating event of the olympics and would be bradbury's last olympic race in the preliminary heat. He actually won against up pretty weak field of the sixteen men who qualified for the quarterfinals. His speed was decidedly in the middle of the pack in the quarterfinals. His incredible lucky streak began in each quarterfinal race. There are four competitors and the top two would advance to the semifinals in his heat. The runner up was marc gagnon from canada. Who was also the gold medallist in the men's five hundred meter and the bronze medalist in the fifteen hundred meter however he was disqualified thereby allowing the third place finisher to advance the third place. Finisher was steven bradbury. Most people assume that bradbury's luck would run out in the semi-finals he was in heat with five competitors and only the top two advance to the finals for most of the race. He was dead last however on the last lap. Three of the skaters wiped out allowing bradberry to coast across the finish line in second place allowing him to advance to the finals. Everyone was astonished that he had even made the finals. Let alone have any chance of winning people. He was up against in the finals. Or some of the best speedskaters in history. Bradberry had never won an individual medal at an olympics or world championship. His competitors had one dozens. No one gave him a chance from the starting gun in the finals. Bradberry was in last in fact. The camera had to pan out even get bradbury in the frame for most of the race. It was four men jockeying for position and bradbury far behind the rest of them..

Bradberry marc gagnon five competitors canada fifteen hundred meter steven bradbury sixteen men one thousand four competitors one thousand meters five hundred meter salt lake city second place third place nineteen ninety four four first medal four men two thousand four hundred meters
