"When i watched. Yeah i want to get into that. Because i've been spending a Since i've done the podcast started at seven years ago. It's always about sort of how we we're all raised and what kind of movies we grew up on as you know. I asked you for a comfort movie. I've been asking folks congress movies in the last year especially in zero needed comfort on before we get to your movie. Don't reveal it yet because it's reveal Just talk to me about how you were raised in the arts or not like. Was that part of your life from your family. What were you into commute snapshot will you were as a kid. I wasn't raised explicitly in the arts. I was raised. I would say around incredibly creative people and life being art as it is like. I was really connected in that way so i grew up in trinidad and tobago until i was about ten. And those were the most formative years that i think really started manifesting in my teens to adulthood so in the caribbean it's life is art. The way people say things that everyone uses idioms every single day all day. You know my mother. I grew up hearing her say. I don't hold watson my mouth right. Which means she doesn't keep her mouth close is she had malt water in her mouth because she talks so much she keeps it real so much. All the water would fall out already that storytelling. Yeah right that's an interesting way to say something that you could say directly. Which is i. I don't shut up you can't you can't shut me up. But instead she'll say i don't hold wartime my mouth you know poetry it's evocative restore your coming from the caribbean. I was literally exposed to poetry. And that's one of the super super powers of coming from you know Immigrant communities is that you have all these cultural norms that when you come into cultures like them like the american dominant culture where expected to jump into the melting pot. Lose all that and become american. Sometimes you lose sight of that but that was my life. My life was storytelling. Life was very verbose. My life was filled with like super colorful character and that was art that was performance and now looking back i can see that so clearly like everything you know my neighbors would get into fights and you know it was very lake. formative right would never attack each other. But someone will pull out a machete waving around. I'm like scraping it on the ground. When come over here if you come. You're done today a done today. I swear to god. He'll like draw a line being crossed. I if you cross this line. I swear i will slit yet to route and they would talk like that and that was a regular argument right. So that's how people argue. You know what i mean as long gonna follow through. I suppose it's all good. I mean no one went to jail. But that's the kind of drama. That's that's that's you know. What do you call that melodrama. Yes yes that's a world. Where melodramas real. I come from a world magical realism. Every single thing right. I was told because we i grew up on the beach. You might uncles would tell me if the ocean ever spoke to me. Don't go in the ocean of spoke to don't go in the ocean never spoke to. Don't listen and definitely. Don't go in adhere stories of a woman who was taken by Mermaids like she just went she disappeared. Her husband died and she would talk to the ocean every day and they under slippers one then never seen again and she would always talking about these beautiful women that she would see by the ocean and like she will go and talk to them she would hear voices on talked to them in the ocean and everyone was a yeah she sees mermaids she sees mermaids she disappeared that was the story that's magical realism. Is it happening or is it not. Is it real as not you know what i mean. Yeah you were destined for this. This stuff on the screen pales in comparison to the story. You're telling me a little bit so it's kind been my life. That was my childhood. So once i finally got into movies and i got into movies once i moved to the united states and that was inside a lot. A new country had a mother that was working most of the time so she just had to you go home from school. I left food for you. Prepare your food occupy yourself. Do your homework until i got home. I'd be watching movies. You know my vhs or reading comic books. It's really funny and brooklyn was a cool comic bookstore Owned by this korean family. And i think they're american name was the winstons. I was called. Winstons winstons. Comic bookstore right comic book shop and miss winston would give me free comics. She just liked me and it was decided that was. My child had written a bunch of comic books and watching. Tv and watching a lot of sitcoms and Reading books like it was like really cool. You know what. I mean that thing and i got into movies because i just watch so much. Tv you know. So if if. I had predicted like out of a thousand movies what comfort movie. You're going to pick. This would not have made the top one thousand the one you selected have seen it. You probably wouldn't have. And you know what i consider myself a sin. I know this movie. I've never seen this movie. You stumped me. And i was gonna watch it last night winston this isn't even available in any streaming service that car that that time for. God i mean this was a big movie i remember at the time it was a sleeper tells jokes. What movie was your comfort. Movie my comfort movies waking that divine and it's one of those movies that i watch it over and over and over i watched it. I think i've seen it maybe fifteen times and it's one of those movies where if i tell someone to watch it i'll just say forget it. Come over as watching together. Or i'll be like i'm gonna come over and i'll watch it with because i enjoy it every single time and i love it because the characters teach me things that i literally used for my work today. Which is there's no such thing as a small role. Every single character feels as if they're coming from someplace or they're off to someplace else they're all completely lifted so no.

Souls Audition for Their Bodies in Sundance Hit 'Nine Days'

"To be selected for life on Earth. Sounds like a movie plot right like a specific movie. In fact, Pixar's soul well, it's also the premise of nine days, a live action drama that was a hit at the Sundance Film Festival. Critic Bob Mondello says nine days took him a lot more than nine days to process will is a gatekeeper of sorts and to monitor his house has a wall of vintage television sets on which the lives of people play out from their point of view. Amanda, for instance, is practicing a concerto, unaware that will is seeing on a screen exactly what she sees her hands on violin and bow that conductor and orchestra All through her eyes, will writes in a notebook that she's practicing and that it's 10,327 days since her selection. Will was her selector. It's his job as played by Winston Duke. He's an otherworldly bureaucrat who auditions souls for bodies as needed. May I call you And Sure and is four hours old. Do you know why you're here? Strangely, Yes. Do you mind if I say it out loud just to Make it. Official. Okay? You are being considered for the amazing opportunity of life. If, after this process you were selected Will have the chance to be born in a fruitful environment. You can grow develop. And accomplish. Would you like to be considered for this position and is one of six candidates and will treats five of them? Identically? Yeah. Call you, Mike. Yes. Oh, yeah. Alexander Kane. Yeah, With the six played by Suzie Bates. He gets a surprise. She wants to choose her own name, and she questions his questions as he administers what amounts to an existential aptitude test, All right, or wrong Answer. Say whatever comes to mind. Really? "And there's something special about that. But i can't tell from the trailer it's also musical. And the music is written by the brothers from sparks. Which just had this. Wonderful documentary made about Made about them by right. The sparks brothers. Ron and russell male who who are also quite eccentric and have had a fifty year long musical career. That has never somehow peter out and they've been trying to get a movie. Musical made for fifty years at one. Point was shocked at tea and then fell through but finally they've got a movie coming out. So yes adam. Drivers sings marion cotillard. Sins it looks. Transcendently wonderfully weird. It's called a net and it comes out in late august. Avi looking for that. I'm a sucker for a good movie musical. I'll be honest alley. What about you. What else is on your radar for the summer. So i haven't seen either of these but there's the green light that comes out at the end of july starring dev patel and least the candor Disturbed by david lowery director who. I've kind of come to love over the last couple of years especially because he never seems to stick to the same genre twice. And i mean this is a perfect example of that. Because it's this arthurian legend about degree night and a mysterious giant who appears camelot. And i think. I think part of why i'm so excited about it too is that it was one of the first films that was pushed back during kovin and i think everybody just kept waiting and waiting for it to drop or get some kind of you know streaming release throughout the last year. And it didn't so it's built up that anticipation in also. I mean the trailer. Frankly just looks kind of odd very beautiful but i- despite it being based on these old you know our therion therion stories entails that people might know. I still can't tell what's going to happen. In the actual film. And i i love going in with a census surprise because it doesn't always happen these days. Thank you too many trailers giving away too much. That should be a lesson for hollywood as well. Let's keep some surprised that the for the release right honestly. And i mean that's the same thing with my second film which tired i think you have seen nine days. Yes it was another one. That's films that was having so much. Buzz out of its premiere at sundance. And it's one of those films were just by reading a review. I can tell them going to love it. Which might seem like. I'm jumping the gun but i truly just sense and it's about five souls who are interviewed To see if they can be granted a chance at life on earth and in an era of filmmaking where you know we're seeing so many regurgitated ideas we have marveled you disney. We have sequels remakes. I love seeing something original obscene it and it is. It's a lovely movie. Winston duke is fantastic. And it's it's a really big starring role. Grammy sort of a linchpin of film and it's it's visualized in a way. That's really quite unusual in lovely..

"I as Kelly has known me, I have only gained more weight like I'm not the weight I was when we met not even close. And you know my weight's pretty steady right now but this is probably forty or fifty pounds heavier than when I met him rage. And I always thought that, you know, guys were particular about wait for a reason or that, you know, people were particular about wait for a reason that there was something inherently unattractive, even though I have been attracted to people with bigger bodies like I like that wasn't something that had ever, you know, deterred me. But it seemed like it was a perfectly reasonable, you no reason to expect someone to reject you and Kelly, not only like a it's not even just like he doesn't reject me. It's like Kelly wants me and it is really. Really strange. I think too. At a certain point. Think of yourself looking certain way or think of like people having to make allowances to be with, you physically, and having someone an attractive person, and very, you know, and in a lot of ways classically attractive persons say, no, I desire, you like you are what I want, and it does force you to change the way you see yourself because it is really, really hard to be, you know, and feel comfortable being the object of someone's desire. If you're not even comfortable thinking of yourself as desirable. So I had to relearn how to think of myself as desirable, and it sort of changed a lot about the way I functioned, because it's not what I found is that feeling desirable doesn't have actually a whole lot to do with what's on the outside. It has to do with how you talk about yourself to yourself. There you guys end up stained he other in fact, getting married moving to the place that you would never go New York. We do Brooklyn. Yes. In particular, and the writing side of you that, that seems like it really took root in college really becomes front and center. So you start to build your career as a writer. It's interesting, though, it sounds like you have sort of like a couple of fits and starts like you dove in and struggled and then candidate. Okay, let me let me do the mainstream thing for a while, and I'll do this on the side. But more recently, it sounds like it's like the power dynamics have shifted that people coming after you people like, will, you write this, this, this, this, and the struggle is for you. These days is more figuring out what to say. Yes to rather than trying to find the next thing to do. What's that, like for you terrifying? Lovely and terrifying. I know I keep saying terrifying, but so much of life is terrifying. Just kind of the point. Yeah, it is. It's good and it's hard, right? Because on the one hand, I have a lot of cool opportunities to make cool things on the other hand, I have had to really once again, confront my- limiting ideas of what is possible for me in the world. And in my career because if anybody had asked me two years ago if I could ever see myself, sitting on a stage interviewing Jordan Peele, and lupita and young and Winston Duke after the premiere of, you know, a brilliant and hilarious phone out of said, I I'm not really an on camera person..

And he you gotta find somebody curl, you don't work. Yeah. I mean is it love him. Right. You got some issues with Donald Glover quirky, man. Like AC green was like a nice solid, dude. Like, a very, you know, you if you tell Donald Glover, you gotta be calm. You gotta be solid. He can't do it. Yeah. He's going to be like twitching. To rex. Oh, man. I'm trying to who the actor maybe tell who will play Pat Riley. I feel like you can find parallel Christian bale. I just get him. Kris found a pep rally rally. I'm sure he. "Show. I'm rob article filling in tonight for Pat. I was looking at the box office numbers for this us film from Jordan Peele. It's a it's a frightening. Frightening film. Apparently, it's scaring people to the theaters. Significantly number one at the box office over the weekend. And I'm not a huge horror film fan. But I've seen some some doozy's in my time. So this new film us. It's Jordan Peele second film as director. He's starting to show that he's got some serious chops in one movie doesn't necessarily mean everything. But the first movie he had was. It was get out. Remember that one that terrifying film? So it made an estimated this film us made seventy million dollars just in North America over the weekend more than tripling its production budget of twenty million. And when you can do that you're going to return as a director. That's how it works in the industry. It exceeded expectations. Apparently in a in a pretty significant way. It was only projected to earn about forty five million over the weekend. When you do that. You're also gonna get another film to direct. This is an r rated film, which you would expect for its content. It's kind of got that stead slasher element to it. The scary. Like you can't go to sleep afterwards. Lupita yondo. Remember her? And apparently Winston Duke, they play parents. Two a boy and a girl and a travel to Santa Cruz. And then things go haywire. Got a clip that trailer. Take a listen..

"Mary nice. It's interesting that you have to do you have to start a lot of conversations. I'm really very nice person dating because I mean like in Walking Dead your must off many weapons, and then obviously in wauconda. You like the most bad you, this is the thing. I always said if people do not bad as you have to be to the bodyguard of the Black Panther said, how do you like when you like she's gonna protect you from the black? Do you have to tell people all the time? Very nice. I won't hurt. You people of you. Well, they don't show it to overtly, but I do have to disarm. You know, and I get better at it. But, you know, it's like, you know, the jovial sweet gay rights rights, which I am, you know? Yeah. Sometimes you have to work at that a little bit. I feel like weights has come up to you. And be like, I'm sorry. Hold Hold on on. the this congratulating. You blackout though. Congratulations seven Oscar. Biscuits nation hand the cost. All ready won an award Screen Actors Guild award for best on samba. 'cause what do you think makes the cost so special on, you know, it's really kind of simple in the sense that Ryan really was so amazing how he'd gathered very particular people. And he always say that I wanted a cast that didn't just want to come to work and learn their lines. And I think there was something really great about the spirit that we just had a family on that set. Which was we came in every day. We had ideas we had thought we were, you know, in it one hundred fifty percent, we understood that this was this was a special opportunity and a moment that we really wanted to pour into getting to speak, by the way to the world. He's the things like Serena's, you know, to be able to to share the sort of cultural exchange, but like allowing Epoca characters from this perspective to come to the fore. So I really think that was just the spirit everyone had people came in with so much dedication. So much preparation rights. I think of Winston Duke, and how you know, he came in with that whole moment that every imitates, you know, that the power of how he brought in that character to be different from ours. In the sense that he was your by, you know, in a sense, he was a mimic mimicking or using the cultural nuances of the robot. Right. So the way that he went into that sort of research and work. I mean, everyone just came with so much dedication. And I think that is what I guess resonated for those who voted for us. Right. It's no it's no surprise that. You do on screen. You're an amazing actor, but at the same time, you'll cost ready great. The Walking Dead is coming back for its ninth season now, and the story has volt so much. "It. That I don't think so. Just directed and wrote it. No, that's not him. I'm watching the trailer. Who was it? I don't know who it is. But it's not. But anyway. Yeah. Just look, very frightening. And and I thought what I'm not I can't do that to myself. Why would I do that to myself? Just Winston Duke Winston Duke who played in Baku in Black Panther. I believe. They're all kinds of horror movies coming out as a matter of fact, monetary I'm halfway through bird box. You couldn't get all the way through. And I didn't have time was good though, isn't it? Yeah. That isn't the opening great. I mean, the the chaos scenes they're incredibly well. And it made me go all such. Where are you been seen you in a movie in a while? There have been a lot of horror movies being made. But have you noticed that they're not? Overly special effects heavy. They're more jumpy. They're more scared. A lot of jump scare the logical. But as I think it was Tony Todd. They were interviewing because they're talking about rebooting Candyman. And Tony Todd says wide love to be in it. I wanted to say we'll Mr. Todd you've been in Hollywood long enough to know, that's not how this works. If they want you to be in it, then they'll call you. It's not the I will do it. And then it happened. I guess I'll take that call, but he made an excellent point. He said, it's just so much cheaper to make movies about scary dolls that don't move than it is to make you know, these these larger pieces when he's always talking about final destination final destination movies, and he's he was in a couple of big car crashes. Any says, yeah. Those big set pieces are expensive to stage and everything is just cheaper to make one about a scary doll, haunted dollar or something. Like, what was the other one that? I like, I don't think you guys saw one that was filmed here. Oh, heredity. Which I still haven't seen yet. Good not not many special effects. But but scary atmospheric. It doesn't have to be just jump scares. It can be atmospheric. It can be psychological. And here's the thing about Jordan Peele. You should be excited about because you saw get out. And it was a great movie. And this us looks terrific to let me just based on the trailer. I think we're pretty safe to assume it's going to be good. And it also has some kind of point to bake. Yes. That's another thing that he likes to do. And that's a reason that he is the most qualified to pick up rod sterling mantle take over the twilight zone TV series interesting choice for for that CBS app. Would he want us doing it? Oh, he is. No he there. Well into. Oh, yeah. They've already shot a few episodes. He'd be great. And he's even going to MC he'd probably be better than rod, sterling. He probably will be rod Serling. We remember those fondly if you go back and look at them, they're really heavy handed..

"And I think the movie is like the full breath of his. Argument for what he is trying to set up and then aesthetically it was cool to see the pita and Winston Duke fr- both from Black Panther last week. We had two actors from Thawra Narok. So this week we have to actors from Black Panther in a separate movie completely different universe. But they went together marvel movie, and now they're together in a non marvel movie. So I think it's interesting that they keep working together even outside of these huge blockbusters and definitely feels it feels like it's within its own universally. Jordan Peele has created a horror universe. Even though. There don't seem to be any characters that are related, and I liked the critique, and I kind of felt some of the same as I was watching to watch this trailer. Oh, man, maybe like five times or something and the more. I watched the more. I got the feel that the black family was way too white for what they were trying to portray or, you know, for their skin color, or their culture, or whatever. It is and much like you said, then you see this Meerer the bizarro world of the same family. And they're the same people the same color the same everything. But you don't really know anything about them because they didn't really you didn't see their characters expand other than like freaky. Looks all over and over again. Right. Right. And just the juxtaposition and the rabbits, you know, what? I mean, there's there's all I got rabbits yet. Okay. But really quick though. So the one thing though, that I was thinking was the more. I would watch it. It's like again, the more. I watched it the whiter the black family God. But then it's like is the other black family whose them essentially, you know, like us are they there to lake say, hey, you're you've lost your way, you know. Like, we need to bring you back to the to the black side or something or to the African American culture side right because like your game. Ding to wait. And we're here to bring you back. That was like the sense that I got from it like well why else because where do they come from? Who are they know? It's amazing it it's it is. It is psychological thriller at its best. You know? That's why like it to Kubrick. Yeah. I mean, it feels it has this surreal feeling of the shining. You know, those scenes where they're standing in the room together, and you know, and the pitas crying. And then the other ones like, you know, freaking her out. It's like you get to play both characters. That's a phenomenal. Could you imagine? Where you get to play you and the evil you right? Yeah. I know amazing. But and the the rabbits like, okay. So I think I may be lead you a little astray when I said, I've even gotten there yet. I have no idea what the Ravitz me. Neither do I. Yeah. I don't know. I don't know. I'm just where rabbits come into. I think it's like when I talk about a thesis statement. It's like sometimes in the thesis statement, you have like hints at part of your explanation without you can't go into the full explanation. But I think that's you know, it is going to play into a theme that hopefully, we'll get to enjoy and fully explore in the course of the movie. Yeah. And I guess the last comment I have about it is when she says, oh, they think just like us, my I was no they don't. People are trying to do. They think nothing like you. You know, they're here. Like freaking you out. You know, you're just trying to live your life. No overall. I would say, you know, my final comment is just that. It's really it's a thriller. I mean, it really looks cool. I love the trailers where the the trailer can stand on its own. The trailer tells a story and yet it doesn't feel like it's giving too much away of the movie to come right? You know, I feel the shock value is is only a small fraction of what this thriller is about. It's it's heavier on the psychology. And the thriller is just a means to an end, you know. And so the thrills in the trailer are just the juicy bits..

"And really choose people that I really feel like we're going to do really great this year. So my first tweet is going to be Winston Duke. So Winston played him Opoku, I know in Black Panther. And he was so good. He had like a really a breakout role in that even though it was so small, and then he is starring in the new movie s Jordan Peele. He's also going to be in wonderland. That's being done by Peterberg. And he's going to be co starring with Mark Wahlberg. Now normally I would be like that seems like a. I'm like bad me. No, that's how people are going to get to know him. Because people love them some art Walberg movies. They make a lot of money. Plus, I like Peter Berg maybes weirdly, I still really love cedar. Right there. Well, it's just usually hot guys. So I like how different Winston Duke is in his different roles. So I'm looking forward to that. My next one is weird because people generally know who he is. But I think twenty nineteen is going to be his year, and that is actually Levi. Okay. Here's what thing I think is turning the marvelous MRs Mazel was fantastic and unexpected. I didn't even know he was in it until he showed up on my screen. I was like oh, Hello. What are you doing here? And then I was like I'm don't want you to leave were so cute in this. And then he's going to be in the lead inches Zam. And it's getting a lot of like early film festival buzz. And so I think this is going to be his year to finally break out a guy who's really been on the sidelines and like beloved by a lot of people, but never really famous famous venture. And so and then my final one is Maggie Rogers. She was she's a singer. She was recently on Sanal and got a lot of that's how a lot of people found out about her. And when in reality sheet, literally like ferrall was. Like teaching a course at our college. And like had everybody write a song. And then he signed her right then based on the song, she read in the class, and she has a new album coming out in January she's touring most or twenty nineteen opening right now for like Mumford. And so she I just think this is going to be here, you're I'm already already have tickets to see your Birmingham. I'm so excited. And so I think this will be a big year for her hus- good. That's a good list. Melissa I've got several to go quick. My first one is Meena massad. Yeah. He is playing Aladdin in Aladdin. I think I'm a little more bullish on you on Aladdin than you are. And again, I don't know what bullish and bearish means somebody. He's not wrong. But I feel very control the Iran now, you're either way, but he's he's very talented. When I look for is like people who booked a big deal thing. And then booked a lot of smaller deal things. Right. Because that tells me they're going to be permeating the culture a little bit. And he's in some strains for true run. This town reprisal. Warning right after land. And so I think he's going to have some staying power. There's a there's a girl Kaitlyn Dever. She was in short term twelve. She was in Detroit where I saw her was justified. She played Loretta mccready. She's a young kid. I think she's been on last man standing, unfortunately for her, but she's poised to jump into some bigger roles like them the follow books. Martin. Unbelievable. I think she's really she was good as a kid. So I think that's going to probably. Lawrence was in a TV show with Jeff foxworthy. So everybody's got star somewhere. Okay. Right. The other. I've got another guy. Caleb Landry Jones? He just has a knack for being in really good projects. He's in three billboards that was really good. But he was in it. But he was he is the brother from get out the weird, brother. He's got one of those weird faces. I think he's going to be great character actor Kathryn Newton. She's in the second season of big little she's in cop blockers, cock lockers, and she's in. She was in three billboards sue as the girl I was like the daughter the quickly she's in labor too. But she's in a TV show called the society, which is like young adults OC esque territorial. We're here for that very here for that Sydney Sweeney..

"I mean stuff gets shelved and then shows up in videos, you know, well used to video stores, but in the new. Yeah. Yeah. That always kind of cracks me up. Yeah. And again like it comes out. I mean relatively soon. This is not something we're getting a trailer now, and it comes out in November. Like, I think it comes out March March something like that like pretty soon killer cast Winston Duke from Black Panther Infinity war. Longo from Black Panther and Infinity war, and they're just from Hammet settlers in it. Oh of based on her name address. She's in. Yeah. It was Ma Ma. Yeah. "Bit of good news and that is that jordan peele has announced his new horror movie us this is his follow up for the f and tastic get out chris you're super excited about this what do we know yes someone say i'm too excited about this but this this news broke last night and i was over the moon about it because i'm a huge fan of get out and i'm a huge fan of just horror genre in general and i love the idea that jordan peele is sticking with that genre so yeah last night jordan peele tweeted out a teaser poster for his film the tagline says a new nightmare from the mind of the academy award winner jordan peele it's called us and lupita yongbo elizabeth moss and winston duke are all in talks to star in the film details are really they're not really any details about what it's about all we know is that it's it's about two couples one white one black that's pretty much all we know about it in the past and peel has said he intends to stick with the harsh honora and that's really it we know it's har movie we know who's probably going to be in it we know jordan peele is making it and we know it will be out in march two thousand nineteen and really that's enough for me to get very excited that's really all i didn't know to get excited about this movie and it seems that the two couples it seems like he's still sticking to you know probably saying something larger than it just a horror movie about the social political climate of today i assume and it's also in the l sorry i remember in the aftermath of out he said he was planning to do a series of social horror movie so it's probably along the same lines and it's cool that we could get to see a black panther reunion with this movie.
