"Is a playmaker on offense. We'll see how he looks physically. It sounds like he's doing well coming off that hip injury. If he's in good shape, right? Having him back from Mac Jones, it's going to be a big deal. That's going to make a difference. Doesn't mean they're done. I got offense. Doesn't mean they couldn't use another wide receiver, but he will help them. He'll definitely help. So I think the one thing that I think Brandon Bolton, like you said, he did a really nice job filling in for James White. And there were certain routes that Brandon Bolden ran that were on James White's level. Like I thought that Brandon Bolton was a really good wheel route runner last year coming out of the backfield as a screen back. He had some good plays with a football on his hands on screens and misdirection plays, but he didn't have that ability that short area agility to get open in a one on one matchup like James White can, right? He doesn't have that shiftiness or that one on one ability. And the Patriots are so good, especially backside of getting a linebacker on James White and getting that mismatch and being able to have James White just go to work on that option route coming out of the backfield and Bolden was not really that type of guy, right? You just wasn't that he's not shifty at the top of the route like James White is. That is such a really useful tool for the Patriots and obviously for Mac and I think that that's going to be a big thing to have him back as well. A couple of other things that happened while we were sleeping probably from a lot of us, but off the air yesterday. Big kick Nick back for two more years. The Patriots ink Nick folk. This one also sounds like a slam dunk for New England didn't cost them a ton didn't break the bank and one of the most consistent kickers in the league over the last couple of years. Yeah, he's been excellent and no brainer. You know, didn't want to dip into the kicking market. What did young way coup get from the falcons today? He got big money. Big money. He's one of the few guys who's arguably even better than folk over the last few years. So they get him back for two years. I don't think quinine was going to be the guy. He was very fascinating last year, certainly, but his accuracy was still a question that's not something you can just snap your fingers and fix right. So yeah, this was a no brainer. Good, affordable deal. No reason to be upset about this one. Yep. So that pretty much sums up where we're at now with the Patriots. I can rattle it off really quickly here. They've re signed Devin McCourty, Matthew slater, Brian Hoyer. James farron's Nick folk and James White. They have traded for Mack Wilson. They have tendered Jacoby Myers, and they have lost Kyle van noy, Ted Keras, JC Jackson, chase winovich, and now Shaq mason, obviously they've lost a lot. It's still early on..

"Quickly pour one out for chase winovich, I don't think anybody's actually surprised that the Patriots moved on here from Chase winovich, but if you could point to one thing about the chase winovich experience, Alex, why didn't it work? Because the first two seasons in the NFL he has 11 sacks. He's a pretty productive player, especially as a rookie. It seemed like he was going to be a part of the solution moving forward on defense and the next wave of front 7 defenders for New England. Then he plays that game against Baltimore. I'll never forget that one where he's playing inside linebacker and he's actually looks like a pretty good player there as well. He can play football. There's no doubt about it that chase winovich is an NFL player, but it didn't work here. What's the biggest reason why in your mind? By the way, I think the con picture just came out. Discipline, discipline. Not like off the field stuff, like rush discipline. They want somebody who's going to set the edge who's not going to allow the quarterback to break contain unless you're Matthew judon or Chandler Jones, and you have elite elite makeup speed. And yes, makeup speed is the thing for pass rushers, not just corners. Unless you have elite makeup speed is pass rusher, they would rather you be disciplined, push the pocket, not a lot of the quarterback get outside and be able to defend against the run if that's needed. You know, we've heard it said before. They view an incomplete pass and a sack is equal, right? Right. As long as it's not a positive play, it doesn't need to be a negative place. The quarterback throws the ball away. They lose the down. They don't gain any yards to move on. So I just don't think that was one of which is game. I think maybe they thought, you know, they saw the pass rush potential and it's there. And I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up being a decent player in Cleveland or wherever he ends up long term. 'cause some teams are built, some teams like their pass rushers to do that more and some teams are built better to handle that..

"I wouldn't necessarily call him a sideline to sideline player in terms of his run pursuit, but he can definitely hear standards he is. Yeah, for sure. He can definitely carry guys down the field though. That's the point, right? If you have a tight end in the slaughter in the number three spot in line, he's running a seam. He's running some sort of vertical and a guy like Mac Wilson can carry him up the field. And that's not something that they've really added that linebacker spot for a while. Honestly, a lot of his profile reminds me a little bit of ray Quan McMillan's, right? Similar special teams, core special teams guy. So they seem to kind of be doubling up on that sort of thing, but back to the kind of schematic changes. So the Patriots right now don't have a single linebacker on their roster, listed over 245 pounds. Unless you want to count Anthony Jennings is a linebacker, but I count him as an edge player outside lineback or not an inside guy. He can play the middle. He played the middle a little bit in Alabama. He's a big dude. Yeah, I think they see him as more of an edge guy, but regardless, semantics. They typically are up over 250 pounds with their inside linebackers. The biggest reason why is that they played that three four odd front and okie front where they don't cover the guards with players on the line of scrimmage. So there's bubbles over the guards are openings over the guards. If you're going to uncover the guards in an odd front, you can't have 235 pound linebackers because those guards are going to fit up to the second level. They're going to pull. They're going to lead block up to the second level at the linebackers. And that's when you need to have your Dante high towers in your juwan Bentley is come and bring the sledgehammer, right? Because 235 pound guy trying to meet a guard at the point of attack. It's not going to end well for the linebacker most of the time. So if the Patriots are going this direction with these faster, smaller Mac Wilson type linebackers, then playing the odd front is not what they're going to be doing next year. So this could definitely be an indication now. I know I'm reading a lot into one move. So let's see what happens with the rest of their linebacker moves and what they do the rest of free agency then obviously in the draft. But they could be moving to more of an even front team. They could also potentially be moving to more zone. And that's why they're getting faster and smaller at linebacker so that they're linebackers can handle more zone coverage..

"Have put themselves in the position where they can convince themselves to take a guard at 21 over crystal lava and I'm going to lose my freaking mind, right? Because they can take a guard on day two. They can put James farron's in a guard for all eye care. They will be better off. I know everybody wants to sit here and say that, oh, protection matters, all these things matter. The Patriots will figure it out in terms of protecting Mac Jones. I truly believe that. And we'll get to this next shoe to drop here in a second. There is a next shoe to drop. They're freeing up cats. Yeah. Do something, okay? And Andrew calendar, the Herald who broke the news that the Patriots were trading Shaq mason, tweeted out a little bit after he broke that news that the Patriots have also kicked around the idea of trading for cowboys right tackle layout Collins. Who is one of the best right tackles in football and is an absolute stud. He's a really good football player. The cowboys have cap issues as well. They're trying to get out of his contract. So there is, I think the best case scenario here for the offensive line now, I think the other issue that could potentially drop is as I tweeted out earlier, the Patriots are still very active in the wide receiver market. Basically the entire wide receiver market is waiting for Alan Robinson to make a decision. And it is. It is a little bit peculiar that the Patriots all of a sudden just traded their starting guard to free up 6 and a half $1 million in cap space when they're linked to all these wide receivers and free agencies. So maybe something could happen there. But let's start with Collins because that's the one solidified report that we have in terms of a name. And again, one of the best right tackles in football, somebody that the cowboys are looking to move on from or potentially release. So I don't think that you're going to have to trade a premium pick to get layout Collins. If the offensive line next year is win at tackle a guard from the draft, Andrews on wenu on the interior and then Lyle Collins at right tackle. That is a line that I can get behind. I think the Patriots would have a very good to above average offensive line with that group and would mitigate this thing a little bit of Shaq mason being dealt here. The return on Shaq mason is not good no matter which way you slice it, but if they can get layout Collins for a day three pick from the cowboys, then it obviously makes things feel a little bit better. I guess, and then that does because he's under contract multiple years, right?.

"And on patriots press pass. I'm Evan Lazar, joined as always by Alex barth and we already have a lot of people angry in the comments. We already have a lot of people going crazy about the breaking news of patriots within the last hour trading starting right guard Shaq mason to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for a 2022 5th round draft choice. It frees up a little bit over $6 million in salary cap space for the Patriots and at this point it's getting harder and harder to justify some of these moves to explain some of these moves to all of you. And I think most importantly, the Patriots are taking on water here, right? I mean, they already came into this off season with quite a few holes to plug. Now you look at it and you see JC Jackson's gone. They have multiple spots to fill on the offensive line. We went into this off season thinking there was maybe one hole to fill on the offensive line and potentially a guard spot or a tackle spot depending on how they felt about Michael on wenu and where his future held. They let Ted Keras get away. They still have no idea there is a right tackle situation going on that they haven't figured out yet. And as much as I want to sit here and be patient and say there's still another shoe to drop because you don't free up tap space like this for no reason. Clearly they're freeing up the space for mason to go and do something with it. But I don't know I'm having a difficult time even me who is mister optimism when it comes to the Patriots most of the time. This is the positive show. Most of the time when it comes to the Patriots, it is difficult to continue to explain away not only getting rid of these players and letting these players move on, but also justifying the return that they're getting for a lot of these players is difficult to stomach as well. Yeah, look, the idea of trading Shaq mason in general, you know, isn't horrible. It would have been a lot easier to swallow if they kept Ted Keras, but that they obviously didn't. But I look at it, they made a comparable trade with the same team in Logan mankins. Now here's the difference. Logan mankins was 32, right 32. Let me make sure I have that right. Logan mankins was 32. He might have been, no, he has 32. Logan makes was 32, and he wanted a new deal. He was holding out. Shaq mason's 29 under contract for two more years. They got a fourth round pick and a contributing caliber player when they traded Logan magnets. They got a fourth round pick and they got Tim Wright. They got a 5th round pick, full stop for.

Thanks so much Miguel, I'll have you on again soon. Thank you, bye bye. Good night. Okay, well, that's why he's the best in the cap business right there because there's just so much information that I can't possibly fathom how Miguel keeps it all together and all straight. But his point about Calvin Ridley who I wanted to talk about here Alex before we wrap it up, it was interesting that the Patriots, if they do find themselves in a bidding war for Calvin Ridley, are probably going to lose that bidding war. Yeah, unless, I mean, I think you get to a point where maybe you see if the falcons really like Isiah win. They do need help on the offensive line. Maybe they're high on a guy like chase winovich or Joshua, these edge rushers that the Patriots don't want to play. They need pass rushers as well. So maybe you throw a player in there to sweeten the deal, but yeah, they don't have. I wouldn't say they don't have a lot of draft capital, but they don't, they don't have a lot they don't have a little. They think they have 6 picks. So they kind of the standard. And again, it's a 21st pick. Towards the bottom of the round, so it makes all the sense in the world from a stylistic perspective. And I know the Patriots were interested on a short list with Calvin Ridley in the 2018 draft..

"Partners at bet online dot AG. The Patriots were back on the practice field on Wednesday as they continue. Their preparations for the Indianapolis Colts in Indianapolis on Saturday night and Bill Belichick speaking at the podium on Wednesday morning mentioned that Frank reichs offensive system now with quarterback Carson Wentz back at the helm is reminiscent of the team at the Patriots played in the Super Bowl in 2017 the Philadelphia Eagles Reich was the offensive coordinator of those eagles teams for head coach Doug Peterson and Wentz, of course, was his quarterback until he went out with injury and was replaced eventually by a Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles. Now on the practice field, the Patriots had a few additions to the injury report on Wednesday two players that did not participate in Wednesday's session. Linebacker chase winovich he missed the practice with an illness and rookie linebacker Ronnie Perkins also miss practice with an ankle injury quarterback Mac Jones remains on the injury report as a full participant with a left thumb injury and safety Adrian Phillips with a knee and running back Damien Harris with a hamstring both injuries that were suffered during that win over the Buffalo Bills a week ago on Monday Night Football, both limited again for the second straight day. It sounds like Harris and Phillips will be good to go on Saturday for the Patriots after participating in practice all week long so far. So the Patriots are relatively healthy heading into this showdown with the Indianapolis Colts on Saturday night and for the colts tight end Jack Doyle was limited in practice on Wednesday again with an ankle injury. So that is something to monitor for the colts on that side of the field as well. "And this is not a bad offensive line, right? And I remember at one point I turned to you, Alex and I and I said, they just throw a ton of pressure looks at this at The Rookie quarterback and these practices blessing linebackers, gaming or stunting upfront, doing all sorts. This is not just we're gonna put rush for against your 5 guys. If we get home great, if not that gets to look good against the defense, right? This is we're gonna get Dante Hightower and Matt Jude on and Joshua and chase winovich and Kyle van noy and our interior guys are gonna stunt and pick and do different things up front and we're coming after this quarterback. And I feel like that mentality is gonna be the way that they're gonna carry this into all year long. Some reporters out there. I think Andrew Callen had had them at 6 sacks today of Mac Jones. I don't know if it was quite that many, but there was a lot of pressure in Mac Jones face out there today. Yeah, I mean, we've talked about this. This shouldn't be news to anybody regardless of the quarterback situation. This team is going to go as far as the defense carries them. I mean, it's a defensively built football team. And there's a lot a lot to be excited about. And this just on a bigger picture for the defense, I don't know if you had another point about the defensive front Evan. But just let me pull up the exact transcript here, but I thought it was very interesting this morning. Bill Belichick was asked about Stefon Gilmore and generally the response has been. He's rehabbing. He's reality. That's it. He's rehabbing, or, you know, that's a situation. This is what he said this morning. I'll jump around here because it was a long answer. I know that that's been working extremely hard. See him in here all the time. He's doing other things while we're practicing. Yeah. I'd say I'd say it's day to day. We just keep putting days together and stack them together when he's ready to be out there. He'll be out there..

"I would say in terms of just going from a 4-3 defense and in Oklahoma with his hand, in the dirt to a stand-up outside linebacker, I have noticed a few good reps against some of these backup tackles Korey, Cunningham, yodny cajuste. You know, guys like that have had tough gig jumps. So I think we're all expecting Ronnie Perkins to be sort of, if he's not a red shirt, maybe he plays a little bit in the kicking game. I think it's similar to Anthony Jennings for a PCM, maybe a little bit, any kind of wait and see in your to whether you can bring to the table. But is there anything that you have seen from Ronnie Perkins? That makes you say that he can contribute right away as a rookie or you kind of in my life that maybe we're going to see a slow slow roll here with Ron. Maybe late in the year, maybe late in the year. He comes along, he seems to be, you know, a very engaged learner, right? You mentioned hit him gravitating towards Matthew judon him speaking, with Tedy, Bruschi that kind of thing. So if you can learn quit. Yeah I think they can get them in. I'm very impressed with just how quick he gets off the line of scrimmage his initial burst but he is does seem like more of a project player. That being said, if he's going to contribute this here I think it's going to be on a special teams, get special teams experience in Oklahoma. We've seen him out there, you know, getting some special teams reps so far this summer. So that's maybe where we see him right away. But again, he he does strike me as a guy who who seems like he can pick things up relatively quickly. So, you know, a couple of guys get banged up as as is what happens over the course of the NFL season, maybe get to November and he gets his chance and he runs with it, so I am not expecting him, you know, in the first month or two, but he, he's not, I'm not totally writing him off this year either. Yeah, he's got some nice block, recognition, two and two against the Run working against the scout-team offense. You've seen those mome Is where he recognizes the polar or he sees that outside step further outside zone or he's just able to kind of anticipate those types of blocking schemes a little bit. He's very instinctive player and we song Oklahoma and that's why he was around the ball so much for the Oklahoma defense as he's got great instincts. And the guy, you know, this kind of gravity towards the football which I really like to see out of a player at that position. I do think that standing up on your feet and being on your feet and playing a little bit more in space and playing a little bit further. Outside the formation. That is a big transition for a lot of guys now, Chase winovich was able to do it almost instantaneously his rookie season and he was able to go from a 4-3 and in Michigan system to a 3-4 outside linebacker in the Patriot system pretty easily off. The only thing. I like about Ronnie Perkins is that he's going to play 3-4 outside linebacker at 2:55. Maybe I would guess is probably where they would like him to play at..

"That, that group of friends too good and it's a strength right now, you know, if you build your team around that and then you get hit with injuries. Suddenly, this thing is scheme to be a strength. This position that seemed to be a strength, doesn't need any help. So I want a ton of depth there and keeping winovich but you know it it briefly popped into my head and that can change that can certainly change. He's not a guy that I you know I'm not writing him in in Sharpie him. In in pencil but I I have him on the roster right now and I really didn't think too much about it. I didn't think too much about it either because to be I didn't chase winovich is going to be a really good football player for a long time with the Patriots, it might be more of like a situational type of role where he's really kind of like a designated pass-rusher and not necessarily somebody that plays a whole lot on first down and that is going to be a little bit tough to get him on the field in those situations. When you have judon and Venoy and Hightower new J, the head of him, it might be a little bit difficult at times for Chase. Winovich, find playing time but I think what you've mentioned is, the most important thing is, this is going to be a base 3-4 or even a to 4 at times where they're going to want to play for our linebackers. Whether you're outside or off the ball for linebackers on the field at once and based on what we've seen, how to Anthony Jennings last year, based on what Ronnie Perkins was telling us. During his Beady availability yesterday. Were it was very clear that Ronnie Perkins. His head is still spinning right now trying to learn everything in the Patriots defense. It kind of feels like you need that experience and have a guy like June on or a guy like bad noise where to go down then you really would want Chase winovich on the team. At that point, I could see just to go back to kind of what you said earlier. Right about what kind of player chased wage is going to be throughout his career. I wouldn't be surprised if there's a Chandler Jones type of Arc. I don't know that he's that kind of player right under these ever going to be a, was it 22 sacks 23 sacks ever had a couple of years ago? I, I don't know that he ever hits that number. But Chandler Jones was a very good player in New England but he was kind of constrained by the role he was in in just the way the Patriots played defense. And then he got out to Arizona and he was kind of able to fully tap into his potential and it was just a little bit more, a role that was a little bit more tailored to skill set and he really kind of opened things up. I think that's chase women and there's nothing wrong with that, you know, they're just different teams value, certain things, differently, and Ed, When is it? You're right, like we talked about what they kill Harry. There's probably better chances for him to succeed elsewhere than what the Patriots. I don't think Chase winovich as as extreme of a scenario as the key..

"A factor. I think this is going to be a really tough game for the code for the bills. You know, I don't even know if they win this game. I think it's the type of if they win this game. They could go to the Superbowl. It's either boom-or-bust either. I lose this game or they go to the Superbowl one of the other I don't know where you know, I'm not the biggest band wagon guy on Josh Allen. I still think a team like the Colts could really press him and be an issue but I'm going to I'm going to do the Colts and the points in this one bills my squeak it out, but I think it's going to be a tough grind it out game. All right, let's stay in the AFC we're moving over to Sunday is slate of games Baltimore, Tennessee Ravens favored by 3 and 1/2. Yeah rematch here. I think I think I think people are sleeping on the Ravens. I think they had that stretch where they lost four or five and they people kind of put them. Back burner didn't really pay attention. They weren't on National Television very much. But I think they kind of figure some things out and I think I think they went through a low at the right time. I think they're peaking at the right time. I think along Jackson gets his first playoff Victory. They might win this game going away. Baltimore's number-one on the ground. Tennessee's number one in rushing. That should be a really good match up, but I think I think Lamar's figured some things out and I think the Ravens win that game ok Browns Steelers, we've got Steelers by 6, these teams just faced off last week and a game in Pittsburg played no one and it was way closer than it probably should have been. Yeah now now you have the Browns with their cobra have all of it situations the hell knows at this point, but I'm I guess I'm going to I'm going to believe in the Steelers and what they did in the second half last week and the Browns just being you know in a yeah and a tough shape. So I'm going to go, you know Steelers. I'm going to I'm going to take off. Point okay and FC. Let's start with our man Tom eight and half against the w f t on the road that's a lot of points from I mean looking back. I know Washington is not great. And who knows what they're going to be doing at quarterback to talking about playing two or three or whatever and and but you know Tom Brady a lot like Josh Allen this page has not been pressured a lot in the second half of the season and and if he's comfortable he'll beat anybody in the wind going away. But if Washington can get pressure on Brady if they can hit him early and get him a little bit Choice read up. Mike Evans is hurt. They have some other injuries. I think this is going to be a struggle and I like Washington to cover the points..

"That's not happening staying with the head coach thing. We had a report thrown out there this week about Bill Belichick and his compensation and it's kind of gotten conversation going that he's you know about what coaches are worth and and someone speculated. Okay. Well, you know, this guy could get this and thought it was a well Belichick makes way more than that north of twenty million maybe as much as twenty-five million. It's always been this great secret about what Bill makes and the debate of is he worth it and certainly come across the seven and nine year where they missed the playoffs in a string of drafts that haven't been successful you might be able to criticize for the first time ever Belichick the GM and the coach as not living up to it, but every single year project, It's really hard to make any sort of criticism that bill hasn't earned every single dollar and then some and this Patriots Homer I might argue that Belichick could be worth twice that in terms of his actual value to the team suggest. I would imagine you could have put Belichick in any two in team situation this year. The Jags are the Jets and they probably wouldn't 6 or so or if you swapped out coaching staffs entirely and must win six or seven games and the Patriots coach by Anthony Lynn win one or two. It's not ridiculous to think he's worth five wins a year. What's that worth to you a lot. So but it comes into the the ego the Tom Brady situation did Brady know Belichick was making more did that jerk him did that lead to his departure? So a lot of conversation flowing off this one kind of innocuous, you know things thrown out there this week, but your thoughts on what Belichick makes and whether or not it could possibly ruffle some feathers. Yeah. I I have no problem with what bank I totally agree with you. He could pay be paid double. I mean if Rodger Goodell is making forty to fifty million a year to operate the ATM machine we are going uphill. Yeah, then Belichick is worth five thirty million easy. So I totally agree with that and I also think what's interesting cuz we talked about on felger & Mazz and I remembered more later that there's an antifreeze in my Lombardi's book that says that in Cleveland and remember this was Belichick's either he was going into his first season or coming out of his first season in in Cleveland when he was six and ten and never bought a coach before that. He said about a left tackle Paul Farren who was from Cassat by the way, fun fact and bu product.

"winovich" Discussed on Greg Bedard Patriots Podcast with Nick Cattles

"The Patriots were I think going into the draft. They wanted the target more often sung up early. And what does Belichick do we spend the first three picks on defense? And I think I asked a question of somebody at the time I said, well is Nick Nick do anything is Nick going to do in that like what is it going to do tackle them like Bill and so I don't I don't know. I think Bill would like another voice. I don't know. I think he maybe he wouldn't acknowledge that off. But I think I think the Patriots definitely need somebody and maybe this this comes into play with say a PO lie or dimitrov or a bob Quinn who she could recycle former Patriots Personnel people who are out of jobs right now that could come in. I mean peole is certainly would be a strong foil to double-check does is he interested in that after running his own juice? As you want to come back and work for Belichick. I don't know but the recycling thing Greg the concern here would be again from anybody who's you know, and you've been critical of the drafts the last few years. Do you want somebody who's looking at things with with 2010 eyes, you know as the game changes and as player evaluations change and what again the issue here seems to be Belichick at the end of the day just having Supreme faith in I know what a good football player is and you've said that before that guy's a football player. I know it because I've done this my whole life. Now the question is whether or not he's wrong more often than he used to be because he's not recognizing how the game has changed or what exactly you need to be successful, you know wage and and and to draft impact players for which they lack if you bring in an old guy who did it the old way. Is there a fear that you're going back to that you're staying in that system instead of moving fog. Wouldn't it be better theoretically to bring in a younger Voice or a newer Voice or someone who can look at things a little bit different way and count counter bill. I I I just don't know that people would be super not satisfied with with with with a recycled version of a person who's been here before or and or been out of the game for a little bit of time. Yeah. I mean I get that but I think that's more of a month that's more of a sort of scheme type of thing. Like do we want to evolve in certain areas, especially on defense where you know, whatever we want to use, you know, let's get back to 3 down guys instead of just, you know role players and things like that and and really it's at the end of the day. I mean, it doesn't really matter who they bring in whether it's Scott P or Thomas dimitroff or Zeigler or Elliot wolf. It doesn't really matter because it's Bill and it's whatever Bill and and the thing is and I think I talked about it with Nick. I did last last podcast dead. Two people want to listen to it. There is enthusiasm within one Patriot Place that Belichick does realize what's going on that he needs to change early Salter wage way and and part of that thinking was changing up some of the voices in the Personnel department. And so as of right now, it seems like things are going in the right direction..

"So so I do not put that in there. The next thing that I wanted to say was I look basically basically my criticism of Chase winovich, which trust me is in line with the internal discussions about Chase winovich are off old number one. He has not risen to being an every-down player at all this season. He had a prime opportunity early on in the season. He did have a really good game early and forget which game it was and then he did not play a lot and everybody was wondering why isn't he playing? Why isn't he playing right that continued throughout the season we have ended the season with Chase winovich his role on this team was as situational pass-rusher. He was never an every-down player that tells you everything you need to know right there about how the team views him. On a linebacker deficient team, so he didn't need to be he he didn't need to be exceptional to be an every-down player. He had to be possible because the other people they were putting in there in his stead. We're not pro bowlers by any means so he's playing behind John Simon shilique Calhoun when he's healthy Brandon Copeland lose out there like he's playing behind a whole bunch of people and write that tells you whatever whatever you see on the field whatever role a players used in on the field. That's where the coach is Bill Belichick, especially on defense Bill Belichick. God sees that player and he in his eyes Chase winovich never Rose to an every-down player why I asked the question why and what I've been told and this is this you can see this on film. He is not consistent on the edge he can he has not been they do not have confidence in him that he is going to do the right things on an everyday every down basis and so dead. That's where that comes from number to as far as his personality. Certainly. I've noticed things there was you know mugging for the camera and that was for Adam Adam richens who shoots for us. So he dragged psj.

"I'm John's and is filling in for Nick cattles. And this of course is Greg Bedard. What's up, Greg? Hey, what's going on? John? Not much. I've not much at all. If you're well quite a bit of your page. It's they they lost Nicholas area will talk about that. He went to the Houston Texans a loss. We'll talk about how big a loss could be some other Personnel shuffling as well talk about the future of Josh McDaniels podcast as always is brought to you by betonline.ag. And as always we want you to subscribe rate and review the podcast we're going to remind you that several times throughout but we want to get into its first grade before we talk about nicus area. It looks like you're stirring the pot a little bit here. You've gotten yourself evidently. Yeah, you've gotten yourself in a bit of trouble and it's chased way. You've upset Chase winovich. Do you feel bad about that? It comes with the territory, especially in the territory. Yeah, so anybody who's listened all of you here read Boston Sports Journal you listen to a podcast you follow Greg Bedard, you know that he's been critical and Greg you've been critical of winovich all year bit of a freestyler maybe a showboater. Some vibe that there's people on the team who think he's kind of a me guy, you know, Yemen it up. I I know one of one of your readers sent you photos of him kind of posing for cameras and this and that and so there's been issues throughout the year and you've written about it took a few times but apparently something you wrote a couple of days ago. I came across was presented to him in a radio interview and he responded he wasn't too happy about it. But first, why don't you read what it is that you wrote about him and elaborate a little bit on it and we'll play the clip from one of each. Okay, so you're absolutely correct. I've been critical of him all year and I'm not critical of players unless I have wage. In the believe that and and I wrote about him. I'm looking November 17th. I wrote Chase winovich States his case with a monster game, but we'll Bill Belichick ever really trust him and I went to sort of a deep dive off on Chase and it was about at that time. It was about people couldn't figure out. All right. Well, he's playing well, he rushes the passer. Well, why isn't he playing more and people just couldn't figure that out. So it was that that story about that. This story was it was basically my break down after the the Jets game that I do a Boston Sports Journal com for those of you who aren't members. I don't like you very much..

Is this what the Pats need to do to improve their defensive line?

"In. I really like adam butler like dietrich wise a little bit but at both these guys i think point to the fact that the patriots defensive line is not where it needs to be right now and they have a lot of work to do a front and i would add to this next guy john. Simon sort of into that equation as well as an edge defender as a place where they could really use an upgrade. I would similar to atom. Butler is john simon and the fact that in his in his role right. Now i don't know if he's fully capable of handling it last year when they had a lot more depth at the edge in the linebacker of hybrid position with calvin nolan Land roberts jamie collins. A johnson played less than fifty percent of the snaps this year. He's now playing about seventy sound snaps on defense in production. Hasn't gone up at all nowadays. Play a slip This is starting essentially starting edge player with four quarterback heads into saxon the year so the passwords progression. Just isn't there at all and you still on the film. He's not really getting off blocks at all. He's now pressuring the quarterback from the edge and on he's coverage player. He's he's he's a veteran. he's smart. But i think ultimately if your signing him to be a seventy percent seventy percent of the defensive snaps guy is he. He can be liability times as you reduce his role some to to the way they wanna use in butler ideally then he can be more effective so it really depends argue with finding upgrade in the draft. Is you taken a plane. More snaps on the edges chase. Winovich can not mysteriously disappear at times and be more full-time player on the edge. Then john fits better. But if you're not going to do that i don't really think he's worth bringing back. If he's going to be a fulltime star that position they want you to rush. Cover drop the coverage off the edge and at the edge of the defense. And that's what you're gonna do as seventy percent player at opposition. It's really tough. I mean that's not an easy thing to do. And i i think the john simon does one of those things as starter level or baby obama replacement level. I should say and that set the edge. The other two things rushing the passer dropping into coverage. Not so much for the problem that they've route into is that chase winovich. Joshu are not ready to be every dow players yet so you're sort of caught with a bunch of one dimensional guys. J. winovich ideal passing downs players. But john simon's better more before stouter at setting the edge. It's like if you combine those guys to one player than the aggregrate football player. That's not how it works. I think the agents run into problems this year with sort of constantly needing to mix and match right in in rotate guys in and out of. What's the situation. What's the down and distance and that can work and they've done that effectively in the past but more a lot more. This season is aided in years in the past teams have identified those types of players and said okay. We know we have signed out here. We know we have winovich john here and they've been able to take a little bit more advantage of those types of

Still No Improvement for Patriots Against Impressive Bills

"What. I think of that game question. I just got done to tell you the truth and let you guys now. I only got through the defensive film. Before i did mass these night games like brutal. I'm getting too old for this stuff. It's it's tough for me to recover. So i just got done watching the offensive film pretty much. It pretty much hold true true. I just thought they got beaten all three phases of the game which highly unusual for team especially in a division. But i think. I think that's where the two teams are. I mean you look at the bills of the the the current the present and the future of the division right now and the patriots. Just aren't and i think i think the thing that look. I understand where the they are offensively. And they didn't quarterback play out of either the guys they ran the ball. Okay the offensive line play was just okay It wasn't as good as i thought upon closer inspection You know this is a team that offensively has a very small path to victory and they basically have to execute well and they have to make the most of all their opportunities and they just haven't been able to do that. Second half of the season including the opening possession when bird drops pass including a. I mean this is just where cam newton is i mean. Even that pass was late. The the sony did a great job of running the ball out and running the play fake. Because most of the time you get running backs who will pull up short or hurry up and they don't sucker in the defense. He suckered in the defense made a good run over to the right side. Threw it back to camp perfect. Then what does cam to he starts running. And then he pulls up and then he throws it was still a good throw. It was right there. Birsh caught it. But that's just like a little tiny thing where it's just those type of things just have built up in this offense where it just the execution level just there and then you look at the bills and you know look. Josh allen has improved a lot he has. I think some of it. You know tom. I don't know how you are but you know you. And i are sort of the same age. We're both were were old school. Fans were old school sort of sports guys. Where you know. My dad told me like if something's too good to be true. It usually is and for a guy like josh allen to go from fifty nine percent completion percentage to like sign percent in one year. That's just it's it's unheard of. It's unheard of what he's doing into me. Then i have in look. It might be true. He might be the exception to the rule that he has improved that much. And he's going to be a hall of fame quarterback. I mean that's very possible. I don't rule that out anymore because of what he's shown this year but to me. It's the combination of brian. Daboll step want digs all those weapons. You just look at the bills and everything they do on. Offense is easy for the patriots. Everything they do is hard. And now i think the most distressing thing in this game minutes been building for weeks. Is that the defense just is not. It's just not even close to being there the front seven. Just not good enough. You know chase winovich was a guy who we thought was he was going to need to start and be effective especially once a high tower was coming back and he's still just a sub package guy and in that just goes on and on for different guys who out there in a playing linebacker for the first time. He made a lot of bear. Stugotz made a lot of errors. He can't cover. He doesn't know how to play in space. He's good going forward. But that's about it like it's just you know they just. There's so many things wrong with this team right now and you need to look at the bills and so many things are right with that team. You're just like you know. I bet tom you're watching that game. And you probably got really depressed watching the building and the patriots. And i understand. It's hard not to feel that

Patriots Defense Needs Fine Tuning In The Off Season After Run Defense Dooms Playoff Chances in Miami

"Let's get into a little bit of games specific stuff everything again. Obviously a nice run defense is a thing. I don't think it matters much in the long run. But this was for against a dolphin team that really doesn't Rush the ball that well. This was fairly surprised. Well, I just think it comes back to the fact that really all year long. I've kind of thought that flying under the radar was the Patriots lack of first and down first and second down Edge Defenders game that can really said a sturdy edge of that's the scheme that they're going to continue to run moving forward and they're not going to go to some of these one gabbing penetrating style defense has that we see more and more across the NFL if they're going to stick to the boss two gabbing style. They are going to have to upgrade at Edge this offseason whether it's a guy in free agency that they bring in or someone like that and I think last year was Van Noy and Collins and and suck on and so forth. I think we got a little bit. I don't know. I think Bill thought that he could plug in play certain guys there like a Simon like some of the rookies like a winovich and it just hasn't really worked out that way. So I yeah, yeah, and and that I think has been the linebacker level is a problem too. I think really the whole front seven needs an upgrade in a lot of spots and they could use a nose tackle. Certainly that could eat up some blocks in the song. Along with Lawrence guy, but not being able to set the edge of the defense and really failing multiple times and doing that today. That was a big big problem for them against the Rams as well. It's been a problem all year. The Niners game with the Niners ran all over him that was often off the edge or attacking those Edge Defenders. So guys like John Simon, you know, he's a great Patriot. He's at that lunch pail type of guy bring the heart hath to work all that kind of stuff. But at the same time that player maybe works out a little bit better when you have a Dante Hightower and you have a Kyle Van Noy and you have Jamie Collins you have guys on the defensive or I can defeat box. And now when they don't have that Talent around a John Simon is easily exposed and if somebody that's a little bit, you know more in the conversation as like a regular every-down player, which has been a major concern on the edge setting setting the end of the defense against the Run. We all want to talk about why when if it doesn't laying why would if it doesn't play well that big thirty five yarder you can see that's cool. Winovich isn't playing. He got bullied right off. The ball doesn't do enough dream aswell yet. You know, I mean it is what it is. Right? And and that's just a this front seven of the defense was a concern going into a year. It was a concern all season long and then it kind of figured itself out in certain matchups against Baltimore against Arizona. They had some good run defense games, but they'll big picture and large picture is that the run defense in the front seven needs a lot of fine-tuning in the offseason. That's for

"You get to 9 hurries that's a lot you play against the run pretty well setting the edge played a little game Off the line of scrimmage that I thought was a nice wrinkle. I mean, this is a guy they just need to find a place to put them even if it's not on the edge every single snap. Yeah, he stuffed the stat sheet on Sunday night for sure. And I think part of it too is I think the Patriots defensively kind of realized. This is Talent lies are better wage structure. Let's let him get after it and what you saw was a lot of hers and even what you saw really was a few cases that he over ran the pocket and the bar was able to escape but you kind of have to live with that if you if you're getting on her getting the sacks that he can provide with you with. So, it's a God just like taking the reins off letting this guy go to work get get your speed off the edge find your pants and get after the quarterback. You're going to overrun them. Sometimes you have to live with that because what's going to happen is just going to get some sack and it's going to hurt that hurt the pocket consistently and that's something that the Patriots defense. He believes this team, in fact of 2 and 1/2. They need to get they need to generate suck up across Rush letting him loose in the best way to do it you live with the negative place because it's going to be a lot more positive place and I think moving forward that's really just really what they have to do in order to to disrupt the pocket. And especially on this this Sunday when they play someone who can extend plays but also someone who's taken a lot of sacks in his career. That's what they have to do with Chase winovich. Just keep just just just take take the reins off off of work. I'm really glad you brought that up about him kind of over-running the Lamar in the pocket a little bit because I think it was last year Michael Lombardi went on his podcast and said, you know Bill Belichick hates it when you walk past the quarterback and Bill had a press conference at some point where you say. Well, what are you going to do back there, you know running past the quarterback as terrible. So every single time I think Patriots fans see Chase winovich or another player run past the quarterback. They immediately think that they did something wrong. But if you go back and you watch how they played them are in that game what they did was they put Chase on his arm side most of the time let him rush the quarterback and then spied Lamar on that side of the ball with Jonathan Jones. Mostly sometimes it was Miles Brian and so they knew that it okay, maybe chased might overrun Lamar in the pocket and give an Escape Route, but we're just going to have Jonathan Jones spying. Yep. Right in his face. So if he does try to take off anyways, we got somebody right there..
