Razer Mouse Security Flaw Can Give Admin Access to Non-Admin PC Users

"There was a rather disturbing story about how this security researcher was able to take over. Someone's computer t- basically live plug in the right kind of mouse now. This case that happens to be a razor mouse And there was actually a steel series mouse. That turns out had the same problem. But the problem's not with these mice the problems with microsoft windows so. This is an article from. Tom's guide and realize that there was actually a previous article to this. But talk about both of them so chronologically. It's gonna feel weird but just hang with me in the article. Explain both of these cases as we go a day. After the world learned that razor gaming mice could be used to take over windows. Pc's there's news at the same trick. Works with steel series gaming keyboards. Mice headsets and even mouse pads as with the razor mice. It's actually the windows. Desktop application that causes the trouble. That's because it gets system wide privileges during installation without first asking for a system administrators permission. This flaw was discovered by security researcher. Lawrence amer who was inspired by the razor issue. A militias human using or mauer. That's already running on a windows ten. Pc and presumably this applies to windows. Eleven to as a low level user during the installation process can leverage this flock to gain full system control and cybersecurity terms. This is called privilege escalation or escalation elevation of privileges it's when processes or users gained powers. They shouldn't have however. This law isn't the fault of steel series or a razor. Those companies are just trying to get their software and stone quickly. This is instead of microsoft issue because windows isn't distinguishing between hardware drivers which normally don't need admin permissions to install and peripheral related desktop software which should need edmund permission microsoft needs to fix this privilege escalation situation before more problems like this pop up as they almost certainly will. So what can you do about this to avoid having your p. honed by gaming peripherals. Make sure you lock the screen of your workplace. Pc when you step away from your desk home. Bc's are under less threat from this kind of attack due to there being fewer potential users around. But you might want to shut off your pc when you've got a lot of company over to really make sure that this can't happen to your machine log. In as an administrator good system than settings and then about and click on the advanced system settings link this will spawn a box labeled system properties. Select the hardware tab and then click the button device installation settings in the pop up window that follows title. Do you want to automatically downloaded absent and custom icons available for devices. Select the radio button labeled no in apparently next to know in parentheses says your device might not work as expected as you might imagine taking this more severe route might make installing new hardware not just gaming mice and keyboards but also printers headphones. Even usb security keys a bit more arduous although not impossible

Satya Nadella: Windows 11 Is Centered on You

"I'm joanna. Stern and i recently had a chat with a pretty big name in the tech world. My name is satya nadella. Sio chairman of microsoft the that i spoke about windows eleven. That's the company's next big operating system. It was announced yesterday. And it's due out later this year. I'm calling right now from a windows. Ten computer what is going to be different upgrade to windows eleven i would say the experience right it's modern and more importantly it centered on you even just that little subtle shift of this start in the center there. It is from the king of microsoft himself in windows eleven. The start button moves to the bottom center of the screen but that cosmetic change actually has deeper meaning. That word center center center of center is core to noodles vision. That windows eleven should be at the center of your digital life as apple and google entice users to their increasingly closed off worlds. He wants windows eleven to be compelling choice for people who don't wanna live exclusively in either. I think windows has a role to play as that most open of ecosystems today that plays nicely with in fact the others. We you know we we want you to be able to connect your phones to your. We want you to be able to communicate to people on phones or other. Pc's that's evident in the new features windows eleven can run android apps something that hasn't been possible

"Alan welcome to the show. Thank you for him for me. You are a flutter expert you have a podcast flying high with flutter and i'd like to explore flutter in this episode. it's been a while since we did a show about flutter. Tell me about how flutter has advanced in the last couple of years so using flooded for a long time. Maybe just a little bit over here. I would say that it's really advanced in terms of the amount of it supports. So it's kind of funny. When originally came out it was actually for web then. They kind of backed away from web and they went straight into android and ios and then they actually became full circle. Went back to going to adding now a web support so one of the things actually just came out recently as at web is now production quality or say so. It's pretty big so now you can build your app for for android and web all in production quality but now they're just added in the support for desktop. So that's windows mac and lennox with version. Two point oh and actually version two point two just got released a couple days ago as of this recording date and looks like they actually add in another couple of more platforms which is really surprising and i think it's quite big to add in so many platforms at once and so that's Uwb which i believe is windows ten and also xbox and i believe they're going to be trying to add support for kaizen in where west something like that so it seems like they're just keep kind of branching out the more platforms so that's quite amazing thing.

"Microsoft had been touting this windows ten x for awhile the next version of windows it's gonna be. We're going to rewrite it from scratch. We're gonna we're gonna components. Is it and make it more robust and more reliable and and it's going to be for our new dual screen devices. The duo in the neo except then the duo came out and it was an android phone. What hey what and didn't sell that will cause was fifteen hundred dollars. I bought one in took it back because it was just not. It's just it wasn't a great phone you know if you're using it as a phone it's gotta be good phone first and foremost now. It looks like according to. Brad sam's over at petrie breads this guy with good sources that the neo is probably not gonna happen Which is disappointing to me because it was very cool nor is the windows. Ten x the special version of the rewritten from scratch beginning of time version of windows. Tha when the new next generation of windows microsoft will not be shipping windows. Ten x this year says brad this year being twenty twenty one and the oh as you know it today. We'll likely never arrive. He writes for about a decade microsoft. Have been trying to modernize windows in various ways. Put on problems with windows. I think some would say this is one of the good things about windows is it Doesn't abandon the history of the past. It's still runs software. That came out twenty years ago. It which is a great labor on microsoft's part to make that work. Furthermore impacts stability security a lot of things. But they're you know hell bent to keep a windows compatible with everything that ever worked with windows.

This is a totally different thing or maybe some day but right now we're talking about cloud base games while you're on earth that's right. It's it's still a big developing story and one of the big players. There is microsoft which has been building out and testing a cloud based video. Game service Over the last couple years and it's going to be expanding that and i didn't realize they had actually done this actually calling it xbox cloud gaming service and been previously. We've been referring to this project x cloud anyway so microsoft announced. Its the services is going to be able to be tested on more devices. Currently it's being tested on. You can play it on xbox consoles p. season android devices but it's going to begin a limited beta test by inviting some game pass ultimate members to play on chrome and edge browsers on windows t in windows ten. "Today tech columnist. Kim commando has you covered in her latest column for tech dot. Usa today dot com. She writes about five new windows. Ten tricks you'll wish you knew before now so we're going to share two of those tricks with you because i mean we kind of want you to read the column on tech that usa today dot com so we don't wanna give it all away. Well let's dig into to to that. I think will be really useful right now. Here's the first step checking your clipboard. So maybe you're online you're copying a ton of stuff and you accidentally copy something too soon before you get a chance to paste it. What you can do is enable clipboard. History which will soar to twenty five entries. He can go back. Here's how you do it in windows. Ten you click start and go to settings then go to system in system click on clipboard and then toggle on your clipboard history once you turn it on. You hit windows and v buttons at the same time. That'll bring up a list of items that you've copied so then you can see everything that you've copied previously you can go. It'll start with the most recent one of the top and then work your way down so you can just see a real quick glance of stuff that you've already copied another tip that kim offers in her column is related to web browsing you can hover over url with your mouse and tap the mouse wheel and what that will do is open up the lincoln the new tab so instead of doing the right click and then you go to open a new tab. You just hit that wheel and pops right up now another tip. Let's say close tap too early. You were reading something. He closed up before he wanted to. One quick way to get it back is hit controls shift t so instead of digging through your history and your browser trying to find it that quick button press. Gets you right to where you need to

Microsoft shuts down Cortana on iOS and Android

"Officially pulled plug on these standalone. Cortana virtual assistant app for the android and ios platforms. This was not a surprise. Microsoft had announced. It was going to do this way back in the summer of last year which i think was fourteen years ago and honestly the company has been winding down cortana for a while. Now i think the main problem microsoft had was that it was trying to piggyback a virtual assistant on top of platforms that already have native versions of that kind of technology. Google has google assistant and of course apple has the famous siri. It's hard to get smartphone users to install a new thing. The does something their phones already do right out of the box. Microsoft gave up on. Its own windows. Phone platform a few years ago with support for windows. Ten mobile office apps fading away earlier this year. But this doesn't mean cortana is going away completely instead. Microsoft has been incorporating cortana functionality into office products so outlook word excel etc so those outlook users out there have probably already encountered this. I know i have pretty much every day. I see. I got an email from cortana giving me a summary of what my schedule is for that day. This reminds me of how google will frequently introduce a new product that will receives half hearted support from the company. And then we'll get phased out but some elements of whatever that was will eventually find their way into other google services that have a bit more staying power. I'm expecting that that's what we're seeing now with. Cortana and

Microsoft starts testing Xbox cloud gaming on the web

"Tom. Warren has a first look at microsoft's x cloud for the web today. Because lord knows. If i weren't doing this i would be probably gaming all day if you are skeptical of google staying in the cloud gaming game. You've got to have more confidence in microsoft right. I mean twenty years of xbox plus microsoft's cloud businesses like three times the size of google's so apparently microsoft has begun testing a web based version of its ex cloud game streaming service. Which would allow anyone to play games via any web browser. This means i o s devices quote much like how ex cloud currently works on android tablets and phones. The web version includes a simple launcher with recommendations for games. The ability to resume recently played titles and access to all the cloud games available through xbox game pass ultimate once you launch a game it will run full screen and you'll need a controller play. Xbox games streamed through the browser. It's not immediately clear. Wet resolution microsoft is streaming games at through this web version. The southbound maker is using xbox one s server blades for its existing x. cloud infrastructure. So full four. K streaming won't be supported until the back end hardware is upgraded to xbox series x components. This year microsoft is planning to bundle this web version of x cloud into the pc version of the xbox app on windows. Ten to the web version appears to be currently limited to chromium browsers like google chrome microsoft edge. Much like google stadia service. Microsoft is planning some form of public preview of x. cloud via the web in the spring and this wider internal testing signals. That the preview is getting very close and quote.

"Code and keeping up with the discussion of privacy this article here caught my attention the secretive company that might end privacy as we know it now privacy as an idea is already pretty much dead people carry around essentially spy ware on all their devices windows ten notorious piece of spy ware Facebook app spy ware enjoyed probably just spy ware Google Google pay out Google play certainly spy ware Google chrome absolutely spy ware but if you read the disclaimer are you a you know that they were going to keep your records for ever and that they had access to your iCloud account and if you if you would read it you would know but our ever curious and you actually signed into the Google chrome browser for some silly reason you can go back and look at your search history going back since your Google account has existed you could do the same thing with Facebook by the way I've downloaded my information he went back all the way to the beginning every single conversation I've ever had all in one neat little file yeah it analyzed that's again I'm still using it and I and I still load pictures of myself and I still use chrome if they if they wanted to find me they would be a couple clicks and they would know exactly right and they would know my whole family in all my friends I'm in a mighty men and they might even have to cut back would have contacts as well Hey you know someone who is watching it on do you live which you can find it do you live to a free talk live dot com is talking about can you imagine privacy under capitalism and I have to say this is recklessness aside because Facebook is unusually reckless with people's information I would still rather Google and Facebook have my information than the state yeah but but they're just going to hand it over Google and Facebook are just going to I mean I don't think they have possession of it yes I'm a city FBI comes then see I is like we have a suspected domestic terrorist yeah because a zero sum thing where it's either or either all of your information goes to the state or either all of it goes to Facebook so not like you would rather have an actual capitalist you would rather have Google then say the sesame credit report credit system in China good lord yes yeah because Google at least has competitors there's dot dot go there start page which isn't actually a competitor but it's a way of using Google without actually getting cracked by Google but of course there are things you can do like Costa Rica no script and all kinds of fun little things I don't remember the one that Michael Hampton who used to do the show on Mondays actually recommended but it was something similar there's the brave web browser and other things it always goes back to the question of why do you want privacy if you're not doing anything illegal that's always their favorite question to ask my answer is always the same well do you shut your blinds before you have sex for you change clothes have you ever been in a a police department locker room there's locks and everyone of them walkers but they're I don't get it either all police they're all supposed to be yeah they have walks in their cars so until recently won ton that's greatest hits and that almost certainly got pronounce it correctly get over it included an obscure iPhone game and apps that let people put Donald trump's distinctive yellow hair own their own photos then Mr Thanh Thach in Australia techie and one time model did something momentous him in today told the could end your ability to walk down the street anonymously and provided it to hundreds of law enforcement agencies ranging from local cops in Florida to the FBI and the department of homeland security now they already have pictures of us I mean the state is all one organism organism and we all went to the DMV to get our pictures taken and catalog permanently in their system let's not forget the ten year challenge anyone stupid enough to take that one what's what's going on with this one now about liking steak and eggs certain ways or anything like that I get the sense that it's it's in the same vein but what information could the cut the F. B. I. R. NSA or even Facebook possibly be getting from there might not be that might not be a an agency in might be Skynet learning Boston it Google Google my guy that in at all it is is an A. I. it's learning from us and of course the the that the ten year tenure challenge that was definitely some agency they got I got all kinds of faces on record I mean it's to update their their their their technology and you know the the biggest argument I saw in favor of that was to people saying things like I don't want to face it you're already put in these pictures on Facebook anyway yes but this is a clean sample you know you might have a picture of a dog as your profile page right something or just some random politician or whatever or a even a meme but when you do the ten year challenge and they search for hash tag ten your challenge look here's clean data right of this person ten years ago in Henderson out right and they could compare it to an actual ten year old of picture yeah and so they can they can put that into the data this is what this is how much a person should age in ten years go with it yeah so even if they even if the FBI or the NSA or the CIA or whoever didn't plan for that I didn't create it it's silly to think they're not using that massive amounts of data to improve their aging software right this of course they are so they already have our pictures it's just a matter of the state putting cameras everywhere and developing facial recognition system that allows us that allows them to instantly identify people and doesn't that already exist well you have a lot of cameras out there he half the population have ringing doorbells now but I mean you have I mean there's a camera on this house and I'm sure there is a couple more people down the street who have cameras I say that a private security cameras though are in a totally different league than what they have in the United Kingdom well yeah it but in this in this country the law enforcement has to actually go out knock on doors like Hey yeah we know she had a camera could we use that information to bring a criminal to justice go away pig well I mean a lot of a lot of people especially I'm thinking of stores like you know you know stores will give that up all the time yeah well if you're using Amazon's bring cameras that information is in at you thank they have incentive programs to get people to buy these cameras where there's a discount where all your information is freely available the police right they are fed and hackers yeah that that's not a story you hear often right but yeah that ring is get hacked in all the time yeah so I mean there yeah they're cameras are not great if you want any kind of privacy in in it there's a lot that can be recorded you know if you're having a conversation as you're walking in your house that conversation is being recorded you know I'm always amazed when I come across like libertarians who have Alexa and things like that in their home yeah white light Gerald who used to host the show he's got at Amazon Alexa in his home and I didn't know that yeah I have never visiting you man you have installed a government wire tap of your own volition not it's not government wire tap but it's one that could potentially come a government wire tap right because these companies just roll over for any kind of subpoena of information but but but you can the only people who are in in the and even the boomers aren't really even trying these days as far if everyone uploads everything everyone's got these devices these easy at ease up the vices and you know that knows their song profile and Annette what not or that it could turn the lights on in that people don't care they just don't because at that because I guess they have nothing to fear because they're not they don't have anything to hide what they don't they have plenty to fear and that's what's scary about the internet of things I just don't know how terrified they should be that their car can be controlled by a computer five thousand miles away and or their electricity usage might being monitored then they might get their door kicked in because someone thinks have a grow up grow out in their in their and their record Raj and all the really doing is raising chickens yeah I'm more concerned with the lack of tech security though you know most people just assume that when they install that fancy little app that's going to allow them to monitor their heating their air conditioning that whites turned on their stove open their garage and all of that from an out that you know it can't be hacked once again and as soon as we get to that point of the internet of things as they call it rent somewhere is going to explode to unforeseen levels going to be driving down their self driving cars that suddenly they're going to hear a message saying Hey you need to send one big point at this address upon a steer your car into a tree because you might know something who is it who is the doesn't matter if they know something or not that's just how rest somewhere is it targets five hundred different people one of them pays and they profit right the other four hundred ninety nine in the era of self driving cars we'll just have their cars plowed into trees eight five five four five zero three.

"To upgrade to windows ten because if it hasn't it will still running windows seven Microsoft's going to start pumping out the old nag screen to say your ten year old operating system needs to be upgraded because support is over January twenty twenty. Yeah. Yeah. They want to move on. Technology, and I get it. I mean time marches on windows seven doesn't really run everything the way they wanted to now even though windows seven was a great operating system. It doesn't feel old it still works a lot of people use it but time marches on. So if you have windows seven, you will start seeing next screens, those are not scams that is from Microsoft telling you time to upgrade sometimes you can do that right on your same, computer. But I'm assuming if you haven't upgraded by now, you probably have a really old, computer. And by the time in windows, seven expires, then you've got some choices to make you will no longer. Get updates for Microsoft, which means being connected to the internet will become more and more dangerous without a way to make it safe. Yes. The challenge they did a study and windows. Ten accounted for forty two point seventy percent of worldwide internet usage, by windows. Computers compared with forty one point. Eight six percents still running windows seven. So it's about half and half right now. So while half the world's computers need to upgrade in the next ten months. That's going to be very interesting. It's yeah. So once they start putting down updates and fixes the things that are ways to hack into windows seven that will be discovered won't be mitigated. And so you will be vulnerable. If you have a windows machine, you're using it on the internet over them so vulnerable what we went through this with XP. We went through the same thing with XP, and it took a while to get rid of X P sort of and people would run Netscape or chrome or something, you know, back then in order to able to browse the internet safely. But now the hackers are so good that they get right into the operating system through ports and things that are open to get to the internet. And you just don't want to run that vulnerability too long. Especially if you do things like, I don't know pay your bills online, right? Who doesn't do that? Right. More and more things are coming online. I wish more and more things would like DNV and super old school, and.

"Six hundred. FM? Hey to go ahead and play the commando on demand podcast tech news today, all the rest consumer tech update as well. As tech news this week and back to the phones we go with Ken in Mesa. Arizona either Ken. Undergoing good. What's going on, sir? He's twenty two years old. He's always been fascinated by foreign languages since. He was a little kid, and he's really developed a a good skill and getting on the internet and going to these websites all around the world. But I have a problem. The computer, and I can't exit out to can't read it. But I don't know how to block him from going to China and Korean and Russian websites or whatnot. So and what does he like to do on the on the internet? For Disney movies in foreign languages. Okay. Okay. And then so he can find those on YouTube. Maybe. Yeah. You'll find them on YouTube. But the problem I have is he just has his own laptop. And so he just always cruising the internet looking for these languages and ended up in these foreign websites when he's a little kid. I used to make his own cartoons anywhere double over infringe in German. And wow. These different languages. So he's very fascinated with the language. Foreign languages. On how to changes settings where he can't get to those. Chinese websites or whatever is he using windows or. Windows, Internet, Explorer windows, ten. One does. Okay. And then hopefully, not Internet Explorer anymore, Microsoft edge. Yeah. Okay. I just wanna make sure. Here's a couple of things you can do is that you can buy using parental controls in windows has certain parental controls built in you might need to get something like a studio in order to actually do this is you can block you can block websites with certain domains. And also there's by open DNS. There's something called family shield that will also allow you to block domains, and so anything with F our country code for France that he won't be able to C N for China that he won't be able to actually get their UK for the UK. That's one way of doing it. And that's probably the best way. Because when he's searching for these foreign websites is you don't know what else he might be getting on the system. Right. Lot of pop up ads. Yeah. That's what I'm going up on. I'm sure can that's what I was afraid of is that that would actually just by by nature of where he's going. He's bound and what he's surging for. He's bound to get malware. It's just inevitable. The alternative to that would be for you to come up with a list of twenty five sites that you agree on. And then you come up with a white list. And if he wants to go to any of these other sites is that you can actually get sent an Email. That says, hey, you know, my son wants to go to these sites or he says, hey, dad, I want to go to these sites. Can you check it out? And then wherever you are whether at home or at work, or what have you is that you can permission or not. Right. So those are basically the way that you do I look I would look first at open DNS. It's absolutely free. It's a great solution can block categories and it's called family shield. We have links to it over at commander dot com. Because I think that's exactly what you need. Also, don't forget windows. Ten actually has some pretty decent parental controls built in as well coming right back around talk about inventory programs that you're gonna love here on the Kim commandos show..

"It was because more and more companies need people who know things about the business that their company is in, like very specific vertical expertise. They don't really need people to necessarily just always be like provisioning, windows ten, updating the feature updates. You know, that's what people are used to doing. Who are I t pros, but probably not very fun doing that from multiple companies, multiple users and a large organization. Like, wouldn't you rather do something a little more creative, something a little more. Kind of that would give you job security, you know. So I, I see what Microsoft's argument is in this and I more understand the angst by resellers than I do by IT pros on this one. I mean, but again, you can make the same argument with resellers. You could say, well, you know what you guys used to do some very basic things as a reseller that Microsoft increasingly kind of encroached into and started doing themselves like things like exchange star protection, like some people made an entire business out of that as a reseller in the Microsoft started doing it as part of exchange and resellers were like, well, what that's what I was doing, but it's like they're pushing you up the stack along with them. And I guess it's like mover or die. I mean not to be Downer, which I am, but. The voice to the exchange, but I made earlier. I mean, you know, I think people get a little comfortable sometimes and exchange example was we went from two thousand three, two thousand seven to two thousand ten. They're all kinds of challenges involved, but it was, you know, it was this on Prem kind of a deal. And then eventually exchange online happened, and I forgot the name of it. The predecessor of officers sixty five and then office three sixty five. At some point, you're migration job is to your kind of migrating yourself out of a job. You know, it's it's awful. I don't mean to laugh about it, but I mean, it's it. I think people sometimes forget that it has, you know the our industry has been like this forever. You know, it's just I think things may were a little too stable and away for a while and had plans to these resellers partners and so forth. You know, they base their business around a certain thing. You know, there was probably the there was a whole business around small business server at one point or whole little mini industry. The product doesn't. Exist anymore for the most part. Right. It's it just doesn't make sense today. What's what happens? I mean not not to kind of belittle what this is for people who are. I t pros, but it's the same for us in our field to like, we're not just sitting back going, oh, you guys, you know deal with it. I mean, both and I have been journalists a long time and I can tell you, it's scary for us to as our field is changed and things that we're being required to do that we didn't use to have to do. I used to just write print articles. I never used to have to do like podcasts or go on camera. I never even thought I would ever have to do that as part of my career, and I may not have even become a journalist if I thought that was something I was going to have to do to be ranks was even conceivable eighties or nineties. You know the. We joke about this. We mentioned, you know, Forbes or whatever, and the terrible headlines and all the stuff you kind of have to deal with. You know, you referenced a..
