I don't think the surfaced laptops g necessarily has a good answer to who is it for either but the the actual design is essentially if you remember the odor acer laptops with the the screen folds for almost pulls food or hatred. Folio they post on. It is kind of that design. So it's not really like the unique design that you would expect from the surface of us. That's kind of like myself really focused. Razer Mouse Security Flaw Can Give Admin Access to Non-Admin PC Users
"There was a rather disturbing story about how this security researcher was able to take over. Someone's computer t- basically live plug in the right kind of mouse now. This case that happens to be a razor mouse And there was actually a steel series mouse. That turns out had the same problem. But the problem's not with these mice the problems with microsoft windows so. This is an article from. Tom's guide and realize that there was actually a previous article to this. But talk about both of them so chronologically. It's gonna feel weird but just hang with me in the article. Explain both of these cases as we go a day. After the world learned that razor gaming mice could be used to take over windows. Pc's there's news at the same trick. Works with steel series gaming keyboards. Mice headsets and even mouse pads as with the razor mice. It's actually the windows. Desktop application that causes the trouble. That's because it gets system wide privileges during installation without first asking for a system administrators permission. This flaw was discovered by security researcher. Lawrence amer who was inspired by the razor issue. A militias human using or mauer. That's already running on a windows ten. Pc and presumably this applies to windows. Eleven to as a low level user during the installation process can leverage this flock to gain full system control and cybersecurity terms. This is called privilege escalation or escalation elevation of privileges it's when processes or users gained powers. They shouldn't have however. This law isn't the fault of steel series or a razor. Those companies are just trying to get their software and stone quickly. This is instead of microsoft issue because windows isn't distinguishing between hardware drivers which normally don't need admin permissions to install and peripheral related desktop software which should need edmund permission microsoft needs to fix this privilege escalation situation before more problems like this pop up as they almost certainly will. So what can you do about this to avoid having your p. honed by gaming peripherals. Make sure you lock the screen of your workplace. Pc when you step away from your desk home. Bc's are under less threat from this kind of attack due to there being fewer potential users around. But you might want to shut off your pc when you've got a lot of company over to really make sure that this can't happen to your machine log. Select the hardware tab and then click the button device installation settings in the pop up window that follows title. They got you teams. That's where they're going to deliver the goods. Just wrote today about the fact skype for business online shutting down at the end of this month gone not scott consumer not on premises stuff but skype skype for business online on thirty one. July and most people are already on teams. If you're a microsoft three sixty five customer but saint that. Let's talk about that for a minute ride. This was a funny headline. Did you see the headlines. Right after the the what was it. Oh after the event on the twenty four th the headlines that kind of dominated some of the news coverage was the fact that microsoft was integrating teams into windows. Eleven right they showed it off. They showed a chat in. They showed a an integrated ability to share your screen in mute button on the task bar right. A master mute button so if you needed to mute all of a sudden well the funny part is is that all these sites went and wrote about this integration things slack came out with a statement that they do member wind microsoft launched teams in two thousand seventeen slack published a full page ad in several newspapers saying welcome to the world. Welcome to the ecosystem. Right we're friends we're friends. They're not so much friends anymore. They they released. The statement kind of lambasting microsoft for using teams are using windows. Eleven the os to integrate teams but nobody read in-depth enough to read that. That's not for the enterprise level microsoft teams that integration. It's for teams personal. So would only work a microsoft account. It won't work with the work account or a school account. It only works with personal microsoft account. And all these headlines big stories being written by company saying you know it kind of backing up slacks statement about this and nobody understood the reality of what they do is just funny with so much focused for me these days on the enterprise. I don't get to play the consumer part the very much. But i was actually able to write about that a couple of weeks ago and say look. Everybody's getting this wrong. And here's the reality of the circumstances. I mean it's just funny to see the reactions right. That's probably been the most fun of everything from the leak to the event into the first preview bill releases washing the react especially on reddit guys read. It is the place to go if you wanna truly kinda see how the day to day. Joe likes or doesn't like something and having been following that for a couple years now. It's it's an enlightening kind of and by the way i've come with an unofficial scientific assumption watching read. It probably eighty percent of the problems. People have with windows is their own fault. It themselves by tweaking something. They shouldn't have tweeted or following like everything in tech is. It's a lot of fun. Not you know you gotta give it to windows ten six years old perfect kind of window to start to bring online this new version Still support windows ten for another four years at least and then that kind of windows eleven whereas opposed to windows seven closing down and the introduction of windows tin. There wasn't as much of a crossover. If i remember right so they were pushing really really hard for people to get off seven and get on ten all the craziness about the the used to pop up a little thing in the system trade that says get windows ten or get windows x. Or something like that you know. They took a lot of heat for how hard they push. I suspect we're gonna see a different approach to encouraging people to upgrade especially with the spec potential change especially with this four year overlap between the two zero s is coming out. It's truly going to give an opportunity to slowly kind of filter people over to windows. Eleven to to take. And i wouldn't get people on windows levin at a more normal pace right instead of this hectic crazy because enterprises don't like that a lot of high end consumers don't like that enterprises definitely don't like that so well. I think they should take a clue from what happened. If they really wanna roll it out just leak the final version. Say it's a leaked. Oh this is a leaked bill. People were looking for that thing ever i. Yeah that yeah. That would get everybody on it. Mike you know looked content. I was like. I wanna make sure you you. You're rich one more feature kind of wrap our thoughts on windows. Eleven here i do like and this was available before. It's always been there. But i do like the ability to kind of generate new desktops. You don't like that I love it. I wrote a big piece. Or what exactly are you getting at. Is it just the fact that they were saying you know what. Let's make our animations a little bit more friendly and sort of easy ease and kind of thing where you minimize the screen and it's all pretty. What what do you mean at. They're striking back at apple. Is it just trying to make everything sort of apple centric or just make everything a little bit more universal for began awning laptop versus on a desktop or spin on a tablet. I think it's more philosophical. What i had noticed and i spent a lot of time trying to parse through what microsoft says. I've been covering this company for way over a decade and part of what i noticed. Was that the way that microsoft talked about windows eleven. They were talking about their app store. For example not having a commission as opposed to the big debate apple is in with four night and tinder and spotify about the charge on their app. Store right the mac that microsoft said we would love to have facetime on the windows. I never in a million years would have expected to hear that from the ceo of microsoft and then a lot of ways. What's happening here. Is that microsoft at a. While for a lot of the tech industry's history. People like google and apple. They sold themselves. As the anti microsoft gurus corporate motto used to be. Don't do don't be evil. Don't rex response right. If you went into if you went into the is that we hung out in all you know. Many years ago everyone called the m. dollar. They didn't call it. Microsoft right ahead of everyone else and so now microsoft is saying you know what we're not going to be that way anyway in fact we don't even agree with the way that apple is these days. So we're going to be the anti apple and that is what really struck me about the announcements that they made last week or so. Mr sure we we. All know. microsoft has has had their their grips on enterprise corporate enterprise for for decades. I that's not going to change. Because of what's going on with azure but workstations are probably still going to be microsoft windows base workstations correct likely for the foreseeable future. But i think what one of the key things that microsoft is acknowledging here with. You know the all the stuff that's left unsaid is that the world is no longer building all of its apps on windows i. They're building on phones and tablets. I right. That's why they have the android app store built into windows eleven. Now it's you know amazon app store. But i'm sure someone will hack google play services on there and get google play on there but i think what's interesting is that it is in a lot of ways what used to keep people in corporate environments on windows was the fact that they're apps were written for windows. They lived on windows. I've worked for a number of news. Organizations that have legacy apps built around windows including when i was at writers and when i was at the wall street journal and so i think that that says something right there is that if the world is going more to the internet than it doesn't really matter what device i have and it's already happening to schools so it could happen to the corporate world i but we'll see right. I mean it's hard to tell how much that could change and we all know. Corporate world is like the slowest to change anything right right you know windows eleven with scheduled to drop here in the fall of twenty. Twenty one but enterprise. It probably won't see it until a year from now more than likely just lays because if all of the role in security tests and things like that now you mentioned it. It doesn't matter what device on using. Well i wanna push back on you a little bit for that. So there's been a lot of Uproar in fussing about wet windows eleven will run on There's a lot of computers here including mine. My rig here that's actually still restarting. Because i screwed something up on windows. Ten that is pretty decent hardware but according to microsoft's existing list of support hardware to support it mine is not gonna be able to Run windows eleven So it's not going to just run on any computer right so what. What can our consumers just just to average everyday consumer that's that's wanting to get into windows levin. What can they expect from a hardware standpoint. Or they're going to spend more money. Are they going to be most people going to be able to upgrade. What are you finding. you know. it's funny. I remember back in. What was it two thousand six. Two thousand five with windows vista came out and ample just harangued microsoft over the fact that so many people had to get new computers for it to work with them right because i had all those transparencies and needed new video cards and all that new graphics cars eleven windows eleven is going to follow.

But it's the kind of thing that i i know because we've been through this before everybody says like oh no microsoft's going to ruin my ability to use windows and eventually they figure out a way where you end up being able to run windows except on the oldest of machines right so i fully expect that to happen again but man it confusing right now to understand where they're going and why and i guess there's a small possibility i'll be wrong and you know some machines that aren't even that old wouldn't be able to run windows eleven. But i started out at patrick. What do you think. I almost smell. The that we're going to end up was sort of a consumer and a and an enterprise level of windows eleven We'll obviously enterprise pro at home. That's already twelve. Sorry let me let me. Let me make that clear statement. I have a funny feeling that if you want to get enterprise level protection because a lot of what would microsoft is alluding to is there concern over firmware attacks and a lot of stuff. It's more difficult to secure. And if you go into the compatibility for windows. Levin web page deepened the dachshund microsoft dot com. They are currently staying at you. Needed system for more has a trusted platform module or tps version. Two point oh which in theory chan be implemented in firmware And still meet their Specs but in other cases you have devices that are supposed to have. Dpi two point oh modules. That don't actually respond as as being when those eleven It's i think we are in. You know we're not even in beta mode we're in like you know. I think the operating system may be fairly beta. But i think a lot of this back end stuff is going to be in constant flux until they actually start shipping the operating system. Pretty close to it. This feel like they made an announcement got a huge pushback. You know the enterprise people. I hear enterprise in in like consumer vice presidents arguing. That kind of thing were You know the other way they could have done this also to confusion which is to make the minimum requirement. Be one point two but then still make. Oem's do two point. Oh and then run into a situation where even if an older seventh gen. cpu has tm one point two. there's a way that it is implemented. That doesn't work and have to say well. Most systems that run one point to a work but we have found some exceptions and then get the heat on the back end when they release that. Maybe it is to microsoft's credit that they're getting in front of it now during the pre beta during the preview period and that way when when they do finally say this is the solution we will follow them along the way. Maybe that is better. I know right. I mean part of. It's also we're talking a good day internet or or even before. I think we were talking about you. Know t- pm two point oh modules which are designed to plug in your motherboard which are being scalped I think it has less to do with anything..

"Regular users only need t- pm one point two which has been around since two thousand six now granted not every computer made in two thousand six had it but only the oldest cpu's will not have t- pm one point two microsoft will update it system checker to reflect this soon in the meantime if you're failing the system checker for windows eleven look and see if you have t pm support turned off you can turn it on and then pass the check. You don't need to have it on update to windows. Eleven and said microsoft plans to change that system checker to just look for the module not look for weather. Support is on. Dave dave always had an issue with windows always always had issues. Now they weren't they they have a pretty much a terrible terrible reputation of getting a brand new operating system. I don't even know if this is like the official way you call it like the very official version of windows eleven at. I'm not sure myself. Because i've only watched it and it comes. He came to me as well. You know it looks. It looks really nice like the demonstration of windows. Ten though i don't know how much How much of it's official and it looked great. I was actually impressed with the devastation. however for me myself i will not download the so because from what i know. That microsoft doesn't like the fact that dig one liter prog sal beforehand and they one way on What's to calm for me. It's just best not to go for the unofficial version. M sure to. I can just go ahead and get it through. Other sources like a torrent or some other place but My heart right now for me. I'm just not gonna go ahead in dive into a key out of nowhere so to me. I am convinced that this is a future windows. I really am. I don't. I don't know why anybody would want this thing though. Well what is this right. This is running windows in the cloud. So this is for enterprise customers right windows virtual desktop Now known as as your virtual desktop if your big enterprise you can virtually is a windows ten or even windows seven desktop if you have certain rights And all your office. Apps on top of that virtually redo for a case of Fire shutdowns. We have it's amazon. Same idea virtual desktops with premier. And all that stuff editors. But the thing you're thinking about leo is the thing we've talked about called cloud. Pc that's it is what i'm three which is related to this was built on top of windows virtual desktop And has not been officially announced confirmed or anything by microsoft even though it exists and there are many customers testing it right now. So that's the thing you're thinking though where you don't have to pay for all your azure resources by consumption like you do with windows virtual desktop which makes it very expensive for normal people. The cloud will just be a package right where they say to you ten bucks a month and you can run your apps your windows possible. What windows eleven is i know. Some people thought that. But i don't think it is. I think they're two separate things. I don't think so only because it's not inclusive enough Right there too many people that just don't have constant good connections That's a good point. You're right yeah for those. It's it's weird to me like someone asked on twitter by the way to do the pc makers know about this new thing that's coming. Have they seen it. I mean and i don't know that no one's ever talked to me about that. But they had they have to have right after. Yeah so it's weird to me that we've already seen a lot of new. Pc's with some of these features that may be made more sense for hold off you know To to get people to upgrade. It'd be i guess when you're in that business i mean you want people to buy now rather than potentially bhai nine months from now and maybe because of the chip shortage too. If that thing causes like ransomware attacks and zombie computers and all the other things happen i mean. Why don't we fix. We can't trust people. Yeah fix it up. Cova taught us nothing. People can't trust so fix it at the spicing that's gonna be the pitch for windows virtual desktop which has never worried about this again. Because we're gonna take care of this at the source microsoft will measure or you're secure. That's the marketing tagline windows as a service is terrible. Let microsoft deal with it. So then people get in the habit of delaying all these even feature updates and security updates all the updates right and so you can blame that for some security problems and then try to say that's microsoft's fault but again it comes back to people are the weakest link right in any situation for sure for sure. Continue to they can just fake. They'll continue to vade responsibility and continue Exactly how they would market that fundamentally we pretty much okay. I mean it'll be interesting. Will there be like any security. Refreshes fixes updates. That are built into windows. Eleven like will they try to claim it safer. I don't even think that's going to be acclaimed dimension. Yeah ten is not. That's the problem with your releasing eleven and simultaneously shipping ten. You can't say something negative about a world because you're still selling it so basically i. How about fixing all the crap. That's in windows like stupid apps. nobody wants the advertising. Nobody wants You know the privacy invasions that some people don't want to think a lot of people don't really care but you know not giving people the ability to say no you're not tracking what i'm doing. I don't care what it's for Seems like a logical thing that should be part of windows ninety five or windows however hard it is to get to the Those are those are much bigger issues to me. I know they are but they're not marketing console as nicely as like. Look how look every time you make a browser and you say something like look the. Us gets out of the way. We're we're getting the the chrome out of the way so you can see the content you came to see. I mean you can make that argument that same kind of argument about windows without explicitly saying oh that lasts you. I we had terrible. Which is the the subtle side message anytime you say something like this. We have foisted this you eye on you for some number of years and now we're fixing at art. Ten one is going to be another incremental update really small on top of twenty one. This is just my theory. Okay yeah i. I don't know what to say to that i mean i. There's a part of me that believes you know. We just briefly talked about wins a service. What a disaster. That is now. You're going to maintain two major versions of windows at once. You can't even do one. you know what. Why would we be doing to We have seen instances where cumulative updates apply to multiple versions of the operating system. Maybe they could use that. I could imagine there being an optional update for windows. Ten that would provide the windows. Eleven look and feel on dissent. Because they're really this the same thing. Anyway you know now.
