Thank you thank you for having me. Yeah so a s- could have you on the show. Congratulations on the book. Thank you now a little bit about you before we get started here with the book You grew up in a small coastal town thing. It's cure north carolina and jerry. All the that always things with the that you say security hurly-burly you started writing it East carolina university and you now writer and teacher living in asheville With your husband for children. And so how does how does Being raised in a small town And the life that you're leading inform your writing and and particularly the book book of thorns. Yeah i loved growing up in in kerry beach. It was ideally in. Every way. And i think i do still have that small town Sensibility of family and neighborhood and community and that definitely informs my writing the year thornton. Honey is sort of unofficially set in asheville. I i don't name it as as asheville but Locals and folks who've been would certainly recognize some of the places and i think that just the sense of of community and family It really informs how i ride as as opposed to you know. I don't tend to set things in in big cities. Ashville is actually a pretty small town A really cool town but a pretty small one and so i. Yeah i definitely think that you know when. I'm when i'm crafting a story. I'm really thinking about the the characters and And how they how they function within their whole community are saw Emmy right Sort of about the mystery and wonder of life as you say and it's Contemporary fiction that focuses on these themes of second chances redemption and finding the beauty and the world around us. And i'm curious to what draws you to these things i think that on drawn to those particular themes of of second chances and redemption and learning how to see the the beauty in the around us because it's such a universal set of of themes. I think everyone is going through. You know that kind of thing. We're all making mistakes and hoping that we're given second chances. We're looking for forgiveness and very often in situations where we're called to forgive others And the the beauty in the world around us. I think sometimes we get so wrapped up in things that aren't going well or especially two thousand twenty the way we wish things were that we very often don't stop to take stock of of the things that that are wonderful and the the small beauties especially i think is is really what draws me is is the the small things that that make our live special. So what kind of teaching a year engaged in. Oh gosh i have. I think i have the best teaching job ever. I teach mostly creative writing and some literature to middle school and high school. Kids through a program called elevate life and art which is a home school enrichment program. So i have very small classes but I'm lucky enough to have classes filled with students who really want to learn to write and students really love to read. So it's the it's the best of all worlds. As far as a teacher is concerned really engage students. And who really love the subject. And and i feel really lucky. I've got some kids in my writing classes. That are just amazing. I feel like i'm i'm seeing. The you know the the the little middle school faces of people that will be on the shelves and in the future. Some some really wonderful talent and and i'm i'm happy to be part of their journey when when i started writing i was in that same age but You know typically in school. You don't really get that opportunity to to to write creatively in your classroom. So i'm i'm happy that they have that in and hoping that that it will keep those fires lit for them

Trump impeachment: Calls grow for Bolton testimony

"The reporting about what is in John Bolton's book. It raises the question. If this is even going to be part of the Senate trial is John Bolton GonNa be partisan at trial willoughby witnesses. Will he be called if there are witnesses. We've talked about this a lot on here for Democrats To get witnesses witnesses into this trial to get a Bolton or somebody else. Democrats need to stand together in the Senate and they need four Republicans to break over and join them on those votes. We've been going through it and it's been been hard to see exactly which for that might be but there is the question now whether this Bolton News Might Jarrah few loose a few critical Republican votes lose for Democrats. Are you seeing any signs that might be in the works here. Yes definitely the issue of witnesses specifically John Bolton as a witness seems much more likely today than it did on Friday and you know I know there has been talk of witnesses all along as you mentioned but there's definitely been some senators who've been leaning in the direction of witnesses and we got a better sense of what they're thinking is on that again. Today Susan Collins came out reporting on John unfolds in string and the case for witnesses and has prompted a number earth stations. We heard Romney come out saying he wants to hear from John Bolton essentially a story that came out yesterday it's it's increasingly apparent that it would be important to hear from John Bolton I of course make a final decision on witnesses. After we've heard from Natalie the prosecution but also the defense but I think at this stage. It's pretty fair to say that John Bolton has a relevant testimony to provide to those of us who are sitting in impartial just a couple of others senators hitters. We've heard weigh in Lisa Murkowski All at another name out there that we're watching Lamar Alexander which As of now I don't believe he spoke out on this but he's another one who could defect so it definitely seems. The momentum is starting to really head in that direction and the John. Bolton News is certainly pushed a lot of senators in that way and is is gonNA put pressure on them politically because you see news reports. If you're a voter out there about what Bolton says in his book and what you're reading in The New York Times or seen on NBC. See News will. You're going to want to hear that right out of his mouth and there's going to be this question of well. Why not? Why not let him testify that I think a lot of these moderate senators in the Middle Arkan have to answer answer that question from their constituents? That's interesting though. I do wonder if that sets up. The potential for friction between trump and and some of these Republicans. Maybe even Mitch McConnell I if it were to come to what you're describing there just in that We've seen this. President have no hesitation to go after his own party if he thinks they are wrong. Him and I imagine he's not eager to have John Bolton be a part of this If they were to cast a vote that sort of opens the door to that. I wonder if there'd be awesome We'd see some division in the Republican side. Well the White House is hoping that if the door to witnesses does get opened with John Bolton that they will argue that they should be able to call their own witnesses. And that that's when you get into a hunter Biden situation or a situation where they can then call their own witnesses that they hope will exonerate all right the president now. There's no guarantee that necessarily going to happen because the senators are the ones who get to decide but it yes it could be a real moment where you have to see some real daylight between the president and the Senate but again at the end of the day the the White House does feel like they will be able to defend themselves and that's still at the end of this process. The president will be acquitted. They will head injury election and they will be able to run on a whole myriad of other issues outside outside of impeachment and get the president reelected that way. What would witnesses due to the timeline of this trial I I mean I've heard suggestions that without witnesses? This could wrap up really fast. I have even heard people suggest the end of this week without witnesses but but if there were a vote to have witnesses how long would that extend trial for. Well that is the question. Every reporter order in Washington wants to know and we were all like doing the math on our phones as weekend realizing this could be done by Friday or Saturday potentially Is So if there is a a John Bolton Subpoena and the White House asserts executive privilege it goes to the courts and that could really take weeks even an expedited process process and while that waits in the courts. I don't know exactly what happens. I'm assuming the trial just gets put on hold and everyone in. The Senate goes back to their regularly scheduled programing programming but yes there is definitely potential with witnesses that this trial could still be overhanging. The president during his State of the Union on February fourth. It it could still be hanging out there. During the primaries during the New Hampshire primaries during South Carolina during these key election primaries that are going on for the Democrats. So just sort out of uncharted territory. And we're really just taking it. I think here one day at a time Iran. Sometimes one hour at a time waiting to see what's going to happen next. Pretty big pivot point coming up then either. This thing wraps up quickly or it goes on for a while. We'll find out looks like later this week. Shannon petty piece senior White House reporter for NBC. Thanks so much for joining honest. Thank

In Ukraine Snap Elections, New President Aims to Consolidate Power

"Now it's possible that the comedians party will need help to form a new government from the rock stars party that's how well Ukrainians at president's party has done because we're talking Ukraine and the president is voted me at so let's get his party servant of the people named offer sit com has emerged well ahead of its rivals in parliamentary elections the count is still going on Mrs Lenski just remind you is known for his comic role on TV as a teacher who wins the heart of the nation of becomes president he is now president and his hands were slightly tight by not having his party in parliamentary control that might happen in one way or another service took the numbers now the BBC's Steve Rosenberg is standing by in Kiev just take us through the numbers as far as we know Steve where we at well the numbers this is a difficult one because of the nature of the the parliamentary system here the election system where Hoff the seats in parliament choosing through party lists and the basically the other half of the results all of individual first past the post contests in individual election districts so we don't have all the numbers yet we still crunching them but we knew yesterday that says seven of the people have done well this morning it emerges that is done even better than we thought because latest projections suggest that it may have secured an absolute majority is no confirmation of that I believe that's the case then that would be absolutely astonishing because when you consider this party was only registered last year it's come from no where rather like the president himself coming from nowhere rising to the presidency and you know who if you look back at the history of Martin you crane since independence coalition politics has been the nature of politics here so it will be incredible if one party has emerged with an absolute majority if that is the case and as I say we don't have confirmation of that then that would give a presidency in ski and his party a lot of power to push through the kind of reforms the kind of policies they say they want to push the ring you cry now he told you you just as he was crossing is both the the snap election was I think the quote was may be more important than the presidential election why was he saying that yeah I think that was recognition on his part that it's a very well being president of a country like Ukraine but the parliament in this country is very powerful and if the president doesn't have supporters in parliament very difficult for him to carry out the the gender a reform agenda that's why he tried to capitalize on his own popularity off his landslide win in the presidential election three months ago by cooling this snap parliamentary election and on this wave of popularity to try to boost his own party and it seems to have paid off because even if the servant of the people has a secured an absolute majority it's gonna commanding share of the seats in the parliament and that will help enormously I'm wondering what the voters want him to do because we from abroad we often see it through a sort of the lens of foreign relations relations with Putin with Russia and so on but is that the big issue this driving people to him I think there are a few big issues here one is the economy people are fed up all of living in difficult economic conditions the they feel disillusioned in the lost generation of politicians who haven't improved their lives they believe and they want to see like improving the other thing is that fed up with rising utility bills the fed up with the corruption which is endemic in it and you cried they also want an end to the conflict in eastern Ukraine the war that has gone on for five years the beginning of blackest back in twenty fourteen when Russia intervene militarily that and they don't believe that the politicians to be the parliament previously have been up to the job they want to try something new they want to try new people and so we can see lots of new faces in this parliament the more than two hundred new MPs coming in had no experience of being impeached total political novices and I think it's gonna be fascinating to watch how they work will the gel as one party one political unit with the same kind of values with the same determination to reform this country or will the realities of politics Kickin will they be splits Willoughby divisions amongst them I think that's gonna be really interesting to watch over the next few weeks months many thanks indeed as ever on the line from key if that was the BBC's Steve

But that's not what we're talking about here. You know, Democrats now are pushing the so hard they want to end the filibuster rule in the Senate. So they can pass this new deal. That's how nuts they are for this. And you know, if you take it a step further, you know, where is common sense of the Democratic Party the problem. They now have is they are afraid of this radical base of their own own party. They're afraid to take it on. So rather, you know, all the things they hid in two thousand eighteen there. "They've written America's most haunted haunted. Willoughby Ohio, of course. And the latest work love beyond the grave. Let's introduce Kathy and Theresa back here on coast to coast. Hi, Kathy, George. It's good to hear from you looking forward to this. Theresa welcome back. Thanks, george. It's great to be back on the show. This is fun. Love beyond the grave. That tells me something Theresa there's gotta be some kind of connection there. Oh, there is our new book was based on stories that we heard. Go stories because of course, we love to go stories, but we found a common theme in many of them in that theme was love. And so after doing some research can't I came up with some of the world's most astounding love stories that also have a haunting attached to them. And so it it was a real fun book to research, and we've got loving every form covered in this book because love is not always romantic and flowers and chocolate. Sometimes it can be dark and a little dad'll even Jaffe, how did you Theresa come across these stories? Well, of course, we both love love like many people, and I think the romance behind love get catches your attention. But then treason, I truly are researchers and historians, and we started looking into some of these some of them are obscure and some of them are well known love stories to find out where the ghost might have come from and stories were so compelling reading a lot like true crime. Most of that. Most of the time. So the stories are sometimes morbid sometimes, they're cute, sometimes, they're murderous. Sometimes there's the I mean, it reads like a mystery, and I love story, and it goes story all in one is the love so strong that it can literally pull that ghost from the other side back here. That's something that we both feel is one of the reasons that these stories stay through the years is the love was so strong either. Because of the horrible thing that happened at the end or the sad romantic thing that happened at the end or the unrequited love that kept someone's heart yearning for someone that strong emotion seems to be in play when these ghost stories come about a lot of them are dealing with unrequited love, which is sad thing. But it is something that seems to be an emotion that's very chaotic confusing and also compelling to make people want to stay with that person so badly that they're not even willing to leave them in death love or hate. They both work don't they Theresa. Eleven hater, probably the two most powerful emotions, and you hear a lot of ghost stories a series of haunting that revolve around something very tragic something horrible like say a prison Mansfield prison. A big one here in Ohio. There's a lot of anger and hate in that prison, and there's also a lot of ghosts. So it's that emotion. We feel is the bonding agent. So love is in our opinion, even more powerful. So of course, that love by is going to be stronger. And I know it's a toss up, and I think if you look for it, you can find the hate in a lot of stories, but if you look for the love, you'll see that emotion is just as powerful if not more powerful, which we believe it is more powerful than hate to research. I'm going to have you give us a love story. And then Kathy I'm going to have you give us a darker side story, but go ahead Teresa what would be one of your favorites. One of my favorite love stories. That is is truly heartwarming. And and not even romantic, but just the story of true love is some of the stories in our book are based on not just people, but people special bond that they have with their pets. And we have a story, and this is one that your listeners might be very familiar with. And it is about a dog named Chico and how he loved his masters so much that after his master passed away. He continued his daily routine looking for his master. And this was a a straight. It was made into movies. And it was there were books written about it and had Chico would meet his master at the train station every day after work and one day, his master died during work, so. Chico went to the train station to meet him, and he never disembarked from the train. Well, the poor dog was unaware of his master's death and kept returning to that train station every day waiting for his master. And he did this for nine years nine years nine years. And no one could deter the dog they tried to people tried to take him home. They tried CDM's. They tried everything. No matter what they did the dog always managed to go back and returned back to that spot and wait for his master. Now, if that isn't a sign of loyalty and love, I don't know. What is it's very sad. But of course, the dog spirit is lives on at the train station. And and it it's known that even death could not keep those two apart. And that's to me is true complete and impure love. I mean, the the dog had nothing else to live for seemed after his master died. And that's how strong that emotion is how long. Did the dog stay there at any given time the dog would stay there. The first couple of times the dog stayed there for several hours and almost overnight. I think the first couple of times, but then it if he eventually he would leave I think the first on his own on his own he would leave, but he would come back. He would go back to the residence where his master was. But when you realize the master wasn't there? He would go back to the train station, and it was almost like a timing thing. But he would stay for several hours. He would even sleep at the train station. Sometimes they would set up a bed for him. And and the the manager of station would leave out food so people took pity on him and took care of him. But where he disappeared to every day is sort of a mystery because he didn't have another home. He never went back to the residents after he realized that his master didn't live there anymore and one person tried to adopt him, but he ran away, but they found in the next day at the train station at the same time credible story. How about you? Cathy, how about a darker story? Well, darker story one that takes place right here in Ohio. Is the story of Sealy rose and her legend is kind of a little more. Well, known probably here in the heartland Stanley rose lived in a place called Pleasantville in the eighteen eighties with her family and ceiling. Many people felt Sealy was simple-minded which would probably be a polite way to put it. But it's Theresa, and I researched the story we wondered if she was simple-minded or brilliantly devious because as time went on. We did grow into a young woman. She fell in love with a nearby neighbor, and this was forbidden type love because see the again was not the marrying type. She needed the care of her parents, and she was obsessively in love with the young boy next door and after a period of time, the boy went to his dad and said, I cannot handle this anymore. This girl is just following me. Won't leave me alone. What am I gonna do? Dad went over and talked to her father, and they agreed that they would be kept apart from van son. Well, Sealy took this. As the only thing standing between her and her true love was her family. So she plotted to murder them. Oh, jeez. And she actually poisoned her whole entire family her mother or father, enter brother obsessed all died. And it was funny during the trial people were like is she crazy or is. She is she just, you know, a criminal and she did go to hospital for the criminally insane where she did live out Oliver years, but see rose the story that kinda lives on in legend because it was it happened near Malibu fire and many people know Malibu fire. I don't know if you know, George, do, you know, what Malabar farm. I do not. Okay. Malibu farm has a wonderful man story because a very popular couple in the nineteen forties was married there. And a lot of people go to male by farm because they know that Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bakar McCall. We're married at Malibu firearm here in Ohio, and it is like next door to see the roses house. That's a neat story. It is a neat story and you to have compiled so many in the book love beyond the grave, which captured my attention as you were putting it together where do people get the book Theresa? "They've written America's most haunted haunted. Willoughby Ohio, of course. And the latest work love beyond the grave. Let's introduce Kathy and Theresa back here on coast to coast. Hi, cathy. I George it's good to hear from you looking forward to this in Theresa welcome back. Thanks, george. It's great to be back on the show. This is fun. Love beyond the grave. That tells me something Theresa there's gotta be some kind of connection there. Oh, there is our new book was based on stories that we heard. Go stories because of course, we love to go stories that we found a common theme in many of them and nasty was loved and so after doing some research caffeine, I came up with some of the world's most astounding love stories that also have a haunting attached to them. And so it it was a real fun book to research, and we got loving every form covered in this book 'cause love is not always romantic in flowers and chocolate. Sometimes it can be dark and deadly. Even Jaffe, how did you and Theresa come across these stories? Well, of course, we both love love like many people, and I think the romance behind love get catches your attention. But then treason, I truly are researchers and historians, and we just started looking into some of these some of them are obscure and some of them are well known love stories to find out where the ghost might have come from. And the stories were so compelling reading a lot like true crime. Most of that. Most of the time. So the stories are sometimes morbid sometimes, they're cute, sometimes, they're murderous. Sometimes there's I mean, it reads like a mystery, and I love story, and it goes story all in one is the love so strong that it can literally pull that ghost from the other side back here. That's something that we both feel is one of the reasons that these stories stayed through the years is the love was so strong either. Because of the horrible thing that happened at the end or the sad romantic thing that happened at the end or the unrequited love the cat, someone's heart yearning for someone that strong emotion seems to be in play when these ghost stories come about a lot of them are dealing with unrequited love, which is a sad thing. But it is something that seems to be an emotion that's very chaotic confusing and also compelling to make people want to stay with that person so badly that they're not even willing to leave them in death love or hate. They both work don't they Theresa. Levin hate are probably the two most powerful emotions, and you hear a lot of ghost stories series of haunting that revolve around something very tragic something horrible like say a prison Mansfield prison. A big one here in Ohio. There's a lot of anger and hate in that prison, and there's also a lot of ghosts. So it's that emotion. We feel is the bonding agent. So love is in our opinion, even more powerful. So of course, that love by is going to be stronger. And I know it's a toss up. But I think if you look for it, you can find the hate in a lot of stories, but if you look for the love, you'll see that emotion is just as powerful if not more powerful, which we believe it is more powerful than hate Teresa. I'm going to have you give us a love story. And then Kathy I'm going to have you give us a darker side story, but go ahead Teresa what would be one of your favorites. One of my favorite love stories that is is truly heart warming, and and not even romantic, but just the story of true love is some of the stories in our book are based on not just people, but people special bond that they have with their pets. And we have a story, and this is one that your listeners might be very familiar with. And it is about a dog named Pacheco and how he loved his masters so much that after his master passed away. He continued his daily routine looking for his master. And this was a straight. It was made into movies. And it was there were books written about it and had Chico would meet his master at the train station every day after work and one day his master died during work, so Chico went to the train station to meet him, and he never disembarked from the train. Well, the poor dog was unaware of his master's death and kept returning to that train station every day waiting for his master. And he did this for nine years nine years nine years. And no one could deter the dog they tried to people tried to take him home. They tried. They tried everything in no matter what they did the dog always managed to go back and returned back to that spot and wait for his master. Now, if that isn't a sign of loyalty and love, I don't know what it is. It's very sad. But of course, the the dogs spirit is lives on at the train station. And and it's known that even death could not keep those two apart. And that to me is true complete end and pure love. I mean that that the dog had nothing else to live for seemed after his master died. And that's how strong that emotion is how long did the dog stay there at any given time the dog would stay there. Excuse me, the first couple of times the dog stayed there for several hours and almost overnight. I think the first couple of times, but then he eventually he would leave. I think the first on his own zone. He would leave, but he would come back. He would go back to the residence where his master was. But when you realize the master wasn't there? He would go back to the train station, and it was almost like a timing thing. But he would stay for several hours. He would even sleep. It's train station. Sometimes they would set up a bed for him. And and the manager of Dacian leave out food so people took pity on him and took care of him. But where he disappeared to every day is sort of a mystery because he didn't have another home. He never went back to the residents after he realized that his master didn't live there anymore and one person tried to adopt him, but he ran away, but they found in the next day at the train station at the same time. What is it credible story? How about you, Cathy? How about a darker story? Well, a darker story one that takes place right here. In Ohio is the story of rose and her legend is kind of a little more well known probably here in the heartland. Sealy rose lived in a place called Pleasantville in the eighteen eighties with her family and ceiling. She needed the care of her parents, and she was obsessively in love with the young boy next door and after a period of time, the boy went to his dad and said, I cannot handle this anymore. This girl is just following me. Won't leave me alone. What am I gonna? To do dad went over and talked to her father, and they agreed that they would be kept apart from van son. Well, Sealy took this as the only thing standing between her and her true love was her family. So she plotted to murder them. Oh, jeez. And she actually poisoned her whole entire family her mother or father, enter brother obsessed all died. And it was funny during the trial people were like is she crazy or is. She is she just, you know, criminal and she did go to a hospital for the criminally insane where she did live out Oliver years, but see rose is a story that kind of lives on in legend because it was it happened near Malibu farm and many people know Malibu fire. I don't know, you know, George, do you know, what of our firemen? I do not. Okay. Male lavar farm has a wonderful man story because a very popular couple in the nineteen forties was married there. "There any other city executives from other towns, you know, of maybe, you know, Willoughby whatever that also might be have a same hobby. Will I know a former mayor, Dave Anderson? Quite the performer. He's a great guitarist I've aware and does a little bit of solo act. So I know he's got a great deal of talent. And I think you'd probably find that's what I'm aware of. But I think you'd probably find that a lot of folks that are in conditions of responsibility in our area. Everybody seems to have a hobby. Interestingly I have found that some of those in the more responsible positions tend to have these type of Bob flipped because as I said earlier you need to have. It's a good way to be able to release some stress. Myself in someone like, mayor Anderson, you're on your call all the time. So there isn't a time when you're not may not be asked to do something in the public interest or be responsible for new who may occurring and that require a lot of focus.
