"What has the reaction to that so far as really positive so t two has a lot of support and they first of all the brothers. Osborne are amazing. And i love him so my and i was so happy to see that story and the support. Tj gets because like he is becoming. The first is a huge deal but also having your other artists rally around. You is an even bigger deals. Like seeing people like mayor. And morris seen people like casey most graves tweeting. There's like really excited about this moment tells you country's changing but it's changing slowly and it continues to change slowly. That's the frustration. I think there's a misconception that countries this very backward looking institution with nobody in there being frustrated by this but like the fact even having these conversations even indication that like barrel a lot of people pushing for change getting sort of stonewalled over and over again. Have you heard of any radio. Stations like polling his music or anything. 'cause i know in the past reduced. They should have pulled songs with gay lyrics it. I haven't seen that yet. That's positive it is but also like it's not like brothers osborne new. You know what i mean like. They're like this massive bestselling artists so like there is truly the safety their country that amazing blog. But it's sort of been keeping track of people in country and how they're treated like what they do is document are an evolution of how country views artists. but also like we're not the inflection point. It'd be like okay now. We're good at this. And so i would check them up because they're really good sort of breaking down. I'm so glad you said that we're just really giving me life today. Because i keep mentioning that. I grew up in national. I grew up in the shadow of this industry. In what i know. Most about it is that you know they say in public is very different than how they act in private in teaching foreign has said in his interviews with time magazine that his friends and colleagues did know he was gave for many years so people in the country music did know this just like they probably knew that mr wallin was racist. But you're planning to publicly the re positioning themselves. But why is this public positioning. Maybe not the most authentic thing for country music. Because i just keep thinking about las acts just a few years ago did win but country did not really embraced the black gay boy. He had doing pop charts in our mba. And everything else. So what what's going on specifically said you know this is not country music and of course he pushed back against that. But we're seeing. I think he's changing the garden country. But it's just sort of so slowly happening but it's kind of frustrating to watch for anyone. I don't know younger than fifty to like. There's this element of watching these things. Change watching the conversation change but also when you get to the highest levels of these institutions. They're not interested in the fallout. Embrace of these really think remained crazy to me. That artists like rain. Roberts while you have artists like britney spencer while you have artists like you'll like willie jones were doing so well that they wouldn't dislike these. These are all black artists. Who are doing amazing. I mean you wouldn't have country just from a financial and commercial perspective shift. Embrace them in a really big way because like there is money to be made. They're just like if you're not going to do it because it's the right thing to do it because you can make money out of it my god but there sort of like that unwillingness go full tilt frustrated to watch but there are these ways that we can see. That is changing. You could see someone like jimmy. Allen has gone a lot of support for being a young black artists in the industry. And like it's really great to see it but it's kind of fits within the model of you can have one one is a treat because he's kind of been the big one for the past couple of years came brown too so we've talked about a lot of change at what changing the industry. But i wanna like go back to older country music scandals. I think about what happened to the dixie. Chicks do you think we've come a long way since then we haven't we. Haven't i mean like the fact that we keep doing this. This is sort of the rest of the peace for buzzfeed was about. Is that like there are people who get second. Chances of there are people who don't and the people get second chances. The most often in country tend to be the white men repeatedly morgan walls of the world. They're gonna get a second chance and the chicks were blackballed for ten years for like a decade. There is kind of like sidelines than they can. They weren't allowed to get a second chance. That is a blonde frustrating history of this industry looking at people who say things that are uncomfortable to. I guess white men and saying no. This doesn't belong in the discourse right now. So i'd like to say that his changing but he's not changing a speed this fast enough for us to detect like instead of going to take a generational change and you know. I don't know if you're familiar with a stat. But it's pretty well known. I guess national that country music is the only john wrote that still sell. Cd's the country music lovers by sees at high rates which is more money for the industry itself. The reason for that is because it's an older audience do you think that's also a factor here for the young black artists that may be need digital sales or digital platforms to kind of grow. Is that kind of why the industry is being like a girl. Maybe not today c. d.'s. Yet i mean that's like when you have choices in terms of where to allocate your resources your invest in the people who can move those cds right who can move physical copies at walmart as opposed to have massive digital sales have said that you know like someone like morgan wall and he broke streaming records. I think he doubled. Luke combs previous record like one hundred two million in the first week and more than two hundred forty million is. That's pretty incredible and we should say the lake streaming is a young young sort of industry. Like records are being set all the time and the reasons being set all the time is because like more and more people are turning toward streaming. So that's teaching. Country has a lot of lessons to learn one of them is. If you invest more in the street efforts you will get more out of those and that includes promoting your black artists down. And you know before we let you go. Who are some black artists. People should be listening to. After so i would start with maybe chapel heart. I love chapel. Heart britney spencer's amazing. Yola so great. You'll is a british woman who does sort of country soul any you listening to her. You could swear their sounds like what would happen if aretha franklin just did like country album so i know it's incredible. An engineer really jones earlier and he's just kind of like he's like a really cheeky guy really funds of very standard country radio fund. But like he brings this extra cheesiness to it. That i really love so i would start with those people jimmy allen of course because he's been so central for the past few years so let's start there. "In my life and also just in my family's life you know willie jones is supporting this with and is doing and i think about that moment a lot. Now that he's gone you know he he he was you know like most people torn between kilowatt. Make some money. But also i think proud that i was choosing a Some of the more important values. You're demeanor on cnn. Throughout 2016 suggested even keeled wisdom in the midst of hyperbole. everyone else's hair is on fire. And here comes van with the comment that even people in the right have to say that was fair. That was honest. And i've been in those moments. When i see the way that the world sort of pulls you in different directions to say this or say that what were you saying to yourself throughout that period to keep yourself in. Let's say the the right thing honestly not be pulled to the left by this feeling or pulled to the right by false equivalents. Or what have you you know. It was such an interesting campaign season I'm a lot better known now. Than i was then and so i had a lot more freedom. Honestly you know during the primaries during general election because i was just one person out of you know nine hundred and forty eight people on a screen you know we have a box and we have a very big panel sixteen bucks exactly sixteen boxes that you know and i love it because i get a chance to learn so much while. I'm sitting here listening. Everybody else. But i was just literally one of it a lot of people so but i come to the stuff as you. Well know i you know. I was a grassroots activist. Frontline you know the left side of pluto of through my twenties into my thirties. You know in the bay area. Police officers And doing a good job at that You know the ella baker center for human rights. Which i was lucky to co founded in one thousand nine hundred six in the bay area you know. We closed five abusive youth prisons in the in the early two thousands and we stop them from building a super jail for kids. It's super jail for kids in oakland which was already i mean just crazy stuff. That was going on people. Forget california is like alabama when it comes to prison policy. I mean we have we built. I think twenty plus prisons in california and one university in the past thirty years. So you're living in california at a time where you know where where does michelle alexander. Come out she comes out of being a teacher at stanford being in the bay area fighting against you know the prison the what we call the prison industrial complex tele call it. Mass incarceration but you have to remember. That was my life in my world. For most of the time that i was an adult. And so when you come from the grassroots activist background especially in california. You're used to fighting democrats. I invite republican to. I got to dc working for obama. I was fighting as much as i love him now. I was fighting jerry brown. The mayor of oakland. I was fighting willie. Brown is a mayor of san francisco. Who at that time would democrats were doing to buy themselves some credibility with the mainstream they would be quote unquote tough on crime which meant tough on young black and brown kids and throwing us in jail and prison for stuff that i saw kids doing at yale and worse they would go to rehab. I mean i saw more drug use at yale than i ever thought any housing project i worked in and so you had that going on and so i came up independent of the democratic party. I came independent of all. The kind of you know you got us support them. Whatever they do. I was fighting democrats. You know bipartisanship in california is democrats in the green party. So i came up in that. And so you know you got to remember It was a weird fluke. They ever wound up in the obama white house in verse. Place we We'd started something called the green jobs corps in oakland. We were taken young folks who were on street corners and getting them jobs in the solar industry putting up solar panels. Nancy pelosi thought that was the coolest thing she took me to washington. Dc we got george w bush to sign something called the green jobs attitude thousand seven. I wrote a book about that. Two thousand eight which became a bestseller and then suddenly I'm one of the foremost authorities on clean energy and job training. The obama administration ahead look at eighty billion dollars with a b. in the stimulus package for clean energy and green jobs. Nobody knows how to combine that with job training programs. But you come to washington. Dc in other people who did but they weren't as high profile and so suddenly. I'm in the obama white house for six months. I'll leave under fire now. I wind up on cable television. But i don't come to it with a normal media. I don't come to it with a normal political background and that gives me. I think just a different perspective is. I'm trying figure out some way to triangulate. I just look at the stuff very differently. No true i remember lawrence o'donnell once said to me. You know what we see. Our people like we were covering sports. Politics would be like. We're covering not the game's not the practices but people come out of the practice and tell us what they were like..

"Month on saturday nights where he interviews incredible people. His first episode was jay z. His latest episode is able to vernay and oprah winfrey. Tm son your bookings are killing the game. I always hope that this show is a value to you and that it gives you some thoughts some tactics of inspiration. Some fuel for your rise. I know this episode will be all of that. Van jones came to the studio. You carry yourself with this powerful dignity. I think that wraps whatever you're saying in this gravity and this wait. Where does that come from in you. Do you even know you recognize what i'm talking about. No really no i can be silly. I mean i i i've quoted. Ll cool j. and marvel comics on tv. I don't know if that's if that's dignify But you know i i do come from a particular background in terms of having grown up in the rural south on the edge of a small town. My father grew up. In extreme poverty. In orange mound memphis. He joined the military to get out of it and then he went to put himself through college a little small black college at called lane college in jackson tennessee and mary the president's daughter my mother because my dad had it like and You know and then my my grandfather and my mother's side obviously Was a college president. at a very young age. And so you know i've had. There are a lot of black men in my family that taking on serious responsibility and Played important roles in in our community. I feel like i own them a lot. If my dad had had half the chances i had he'd been either. You know billionaire prime minister. Whatever i mean these us still my dad's still the smartest political minds i've ever encountered and i've worked with the very best But it was born poor and segregation nineteen forty four and his his he got was able to buy a brick house with a yard in the front and the back and he never stopped talking about that. He thought that was. You know we got. We got a front yard antibiotic yard. You ain't never open refrigerator and not have food in there. I mean so when you start with those kinds of you know shoulder sustained on you want to jump high. I mean you. Yeah when. I think about grandfather preacher Grandfather college president Father a principal. Yes so all these men who are leaders yes and have to be precise with their words. And when i read that as your lineage and like a bullet it starts to make more sense. Yeah i think that's right and Yeah i mean. I think there's a lot of You know my mom. Of course also extraordinary. I mean she was a community leader as well. Actually i spent more time with my mom growing up. My dad they stayed married probably shouldn't have but they stayed married. And my mom who knows know the big churchgoer sorority member. That kind of stuff. And i went to the meetings in community with her and my twin sister so i got to my organizing background from my mom. Got some of my leadership background from my dad. But you know there's a lot of black families like mine that don't get very much attention but are the backbone of most small towns and neighborhoods across the country and We you know. I was born in sixty eight so when those doors came open they said look. You guys are as good as any of these white kids get in there and show him but they'd never been there so they're sitting. They sent me to university of tennessee at martin and then to yale law school. They're sending me to places they've never been right. And so i'm the i you know i'm the explorer trying to figure this stuff out and You know it's You and i do carry that. I do carry that responsibility of feeling like A lot of people shed a lot of literal blood for me to be able to walk through some of these doors. Yeah i mean that has definitely been something powering. My career my choices that you better do something serious. Because there's people who died and bled and fought for you to be able to have this opportunity and we're in the generation where in you've been an activist for a very long time but we didn't have to fight the way. The previous generation had to fight just to be able to drink the water fountain. Just build a walk in the front door. It was it was a choice. I mean for us especially now in the eighties. You to the huxtables and spike lee and kind of stuff that there was a sense of kind of black middle class. That was coming on. But you know you could choose to be more about the cause or the struggle or just choose not to be and I chose to you know to to take all this stuff seriously. I graduated from yale. Law school in ninety three moved to the bay area started suan cops and work in closed prison and a lot of stuff that even my parents thought was weird. What you make some money to pay back of these laws you'll love but you know i remember one time. My uncles were getting on me about boy. You need to make some money. I and my dad who never really take my side at any of these debates. He's always kind of ribbing me about yeah you you broke your whole life you know. Hey leave him alone. Somebody's gotta do it. He wants to do it. Leave him alone. And that was a powerful moment in my life and also just in my family's life you know willie jones is supporting this with and is doing and i think about that moment a lot. Now that he's gone you know he he he was you know like most people torn between kilowatt. Make some money. But also i think proud that i was choosing a.

"This one's easy for me. I'll go Jim lampley moral Rinaldo, Max Kellerman and. Like, could it be all time? Because if so I want George Foreman bag? But. Oh. No, you know what? Let's say if it's like it could be imaginary Emanuel Stewart Bro in my opinion one of the greatest of all time behind the Mike loved him bro the moments like. Your remember when Victories Bertel happen and he let out this like crazy yelp it was like, oh, like he was just truly into the fights and he was reactionary and I just loved it i. felt like he was a real fan watching what was the hardest it was like a aw It went down Bro. It was go back and watch it. It's hilarious valid. You. Know but you did that will just be a man. That's all right. Well, I hope nobody clips that and I just said that so somebody's going to clip it What do y'all think four man panel. I. Definitely pick poorly Larry merchant and. Then, you just name them spacing on his name Jim lampley Jim Lampley Larry Merchant. I said man you Paulie Montage. a main stuart yes and I like Willie Jones I like Roy. Think Ward has been doing. That's a good one. I forgot about Cam Gore did one. I like word you know what I'll take out. And either Jimmer Max take out and replace them award. Oh I forgot about Max Kellerman. He's good too. I. Like MACs are really do is the Max Maxa. Sounds like I mean he breaks down fights really well on ESPN but the thing when he was on HBO and I didn't pick this up on to him and Jim. Lampley they I mean I guess they will force to do it but they will only big up. told the company. Line. Now you're right. You're right not like them for that but I like them just their voice alone. You know it just made me feel like y'all Saturday night the fight you know. Word Word Word George. Foster the UK card got her next question. He says, what are your predictions for the Charles Double Header? On? What I'm picking for the Hickam Lisa, he's trying to get an insight I mean y'all early predictions paying not a student. I don't know man I'm so afraid to bet against Rosario after doing what he did the Williams but Charleoi is battle tested. He's battle-tested. He's been in the fire. He's raised in it. Like Oh, I don't. I don't WanNa pick against the region but. Charles Pedigree is Charles Pedigree. So that's my early lean is Charles Oh man. Both. Irrigate, you want to go before me. I'm only picking Charles you know what I'm saying me, charlize. Only taking. Charles Man. That's kind of boxing Fan I. Am I always pick the as side unless unless a Assad face another Eisai fighting to see who's the ACE is. Hard to pick. You know what I mean You know I'll say is. What a real quick I've hung around Charles not like friends or nothing like that. But like I've been around them. I know I think I. got a good beat on them. You know they're cool dude and they're very funny. They're so entertaining like they can have their own show I think one day. Even now, but I feel like we get along with them really well, like after like every day could actually kick it with them I won't elaborate because I don't feel like I should but Yeah, I think they would get along. But anyway, right now I'm leaning towards the Carlos I will say that the only thing that would probably make my pick change is based off of what happens in the next week in terms of the Pekin. League you know if I get down a point or two it's crunch time and I need a you know get ahead I might go with David Chanko and honestly I might go Rosario too depending on how far back I am I'm willing to pick both those guys in a strategy move just plain and simple who you pick and Charles Right now. So that's everybody right there. So the next one's coming from. Ryan roar. Would they. Really..
