"3500. Hey there, this is Michelle Williams host of checking in with Michelle Williams on the black effect podcast network. On my podcast, I talk to people from every walk of life who share their stories of strength, resilience and grow. No matter what you're going through, I can guarantee you a realize you're not alone when you check in. Come on so we can laugh and cry together. Listen to checking in with Michelle Williams every Tuesday on the black effect podcast network, iHeartRadio app or wherever you get your podcasts. You ever feel like when you're at work, everything you say sounds like this because you're completely unstimulated and you don't care. But then when you're talking to your friends about things you're truly interested in and passionate about, you sound like you're alive and loving every moment of it. Maybe you should try podcasting with spreaker from I heart. It's the easiest way to podcast and get paid for it. Just head over to sprinkler dot com. SPR, EA, R, and start your voyage. From ugh. At our back. One of the absolute best things about Twitter will always be black Twitter. It's one of my favorite ways that we show up online. And with Elon Musk taking over, I'm a little worried. In a piece for the LA times, Erica D Smith spoke to doctor Meredith Clark, who studies black cultural movements on social media like black Twitter. Doctor Clark said, I don't think you're going to see the same sort of replication of a Twitter like climate or black Twitter on another platform. I don't think you'll ever get that lightning in a bottle back. But I do think that you'll see black people doing what we've always done. And that is, Ben communication and other technologies to our needs and our will. And find ways to thrive in those various areas of the Internet. So what is black Twitter? Okay, I'm so glad you asked. So this was like what I don't want to make it seem like a thing of yesterday you are because it's still very much a part of the experience on Twitter, but black Twitter was this beautiful collaborative vibe on Twitter where black folks really found each other and connected over just the shared experience of being black folks. And you know, blackness is so rich, it's so multifaceted being black is not a monolith. But those differences really allowed us to connect on Twitter in this completely interesting, exciting, new way. And honestly, I think it's not surprising that there wasn't like black Facebook necessarily or black Instagram. Certainly there are lots of black users doing amazing stuff and building a mason communities on those platforms. I don't want to suggest that that's not happening, but Twitter is such an instantaneous kind of platform that you can be engaging in real time in this way that feels sort of collective and it just felt like the call in response ethos that I feel like is so part and parcel to our experiences. And so yeah, it just was this very interesting exciting collaborative network of black folks bonding over just the experience of blackness. And so I think a lot of times when we talk about what the black experiences, we're talking about trauma and hard stuff and that's definitely part of it. But black Twitter is also about connecting over jokes over creativity over, yeah, just the shared joy of bathing in our identities, bathing in our blackness over Twitter. So how do you think that might change now that Elon Musk has bought Twitter and why do you think that? I am concerned, I will say this, I've had a lot of feelings over the last, I don't know, 6 hours or so since the announcement happened. If I sound exhausted, it's because of that announcement. I know that Elon Musk does not have a great track record when it comes to amplifying, protecting, supporting championing, marginalized voices. I am an optimist when it comes to technology and a platforms through and through. I would not make this podcast if I was not an optimist when it came to technology. But I can't ignore the facts that speak for themselves. I believe that Elon Musk oversaw an environment at Tesla that was sexist that was racist. This is not me saying this, courts have agreed, right? And so I've heard reports where black Tesla employees talked about how when Elon Musk would personally come to Tesla, they knew that they had to physically hide physically get to the back because he was so disgusted to see black faces in his factories. And so all of that tells me that this is someone that maybe can not be trusted to have the kind of intentionality that would be necessary to foster marginalized voices on the platform and already Twitter we know has a lot of work to do in terms of championing those voices. And I think it's so sad because as I explained before, we are the light blood of what makes social media great. We are black creativity, black labor, black talent, black hustle, black grit, what would any social media platform be like without us? And not just black folks, black folks trans folks queer folks. All of us, what would a social media look like without us? It would be nothing. We fuel it. I want to make sure that the people who run these platforms actually see that and are intentional about making sure that that is fostered because it's real. We have a real we have really materially benefited these platforms and I just feel like the idea of being asked to show up on a platform owned and operated by someone who has proven himself to not have a great track record when it comes to things like race and gender, I feel like it's difficult to imagine me showing up with the kind of joy and creativity and spark that we once had. And that's not to say that, you know, Twitter has had its problems, but I just have a real issue with someone like Elon Musk buying Twitter almost as a lark. And I also want to say that I believe really, really deeply in the power of people who are traditionally marginalized, like black folks, we are so skilled at being given the worst and making something out of it, making lemonade out of lemons, right? And so when you think about the spaces that we have really had to fight to carve out for ourselves on platforms like Twitter, that is because of black creativity and black hustle and black and needing to carve out these spaces. And so, you know, I don't know. All of that.

"Hear now from the former head coach of the Miami Dolphins He sued the NFL and its teams for alleged discrimination against him and other black coaches Coach Brian Flores hasn't said much publicly since making the allegations But today he told our colleague J Williams that if the suit leads to progress it'll all be worth it J Williams hosts NPR's new podcast the limits thanks for joining us Thanks all right Thanks for having me First tell us a bit about Brian Flores What's his coaching record and why were people so upset about him being fired last month So Brian Flores started as an assistant coach in the year 2008 with Bill Belichick You might know Bill belch probably the most famous And somewhat consider the greatest coach to ever coach the game of football as one 6 super bowls with Tom Brady And Brian Flores was there to be a four of those He then went on to become the head coach of the Miami Dolphins His record in his tenure there was 24 and 25 but he's finished the last two seasons with winning records When you talk about a man who has character when you talk about a man who is stern and his approach and has a standard of excellence doctor Brian Flores is With that kind of record What did he tell you about why he thinks he got fired So Brian Flores is accusing Stephen Ross the owner of the Miami Dolphins we're trying to bribe him with $100,000 per game that his team would lose Essentially asking by employers who is a competitor to tank this violates the integrity rules of the NFL So Brian is saying that he chose not to do that and that ultimately led to him being fired from the Miami donuts This is an explosive accusation Let's listen to part of your conversation with him here I find never coach again but there's significant chains It'll be worth it It'll be worth it What did he tell you about how difficult the decision it was for him to file this lawsuit especially given his love of football I think this decision for him to jeopardize his career as a head coach in the NFL was incredibly challenging and difficult And he very much struggled with it This is the first discrimination lawsuit in the history of the NFL the first and here's what Brian Flores had to set about how difficult the decision was I knew that it was you know it was a sacrifice that I was making but I also felt like it was necessary And this isn't about me This is about you know something that's much bigger than me Which is a system in the NFL that in my opinion is broken as far as hiring hiring practices for black and minority coaches This case includes a lot of revelatory allegations including a text exchange that Flores says he had with New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick What does floors allege went on here So as part of his class action lawsuit it is against three teams The Miami Dolphins the Denver Broncos and The New York Times The Buffalo Bills also have their offensive coordinator a guy named Brian davel who the Giants are also interviewing for the head coaching position after Joe judge Their original coach got fired Bill Belichick sent Brian Flores a text essentially thinking that Brian Flores was Brian dabel Congratulating him on becoming the next head coach of the New York Giants Brian Flores is reacting to this Texan real time trying to understand maybe Bill Belichick says that he thinks that he actually has the job when that's not the case at all And ultimately Brian Flores didn't even get a chance to interview yet We should say that the Miami Dolphins denies these allegations the owner Stephen Ross released a statement saying I take great personal exception to these malicious attacks and the truth must be known his allegations are false malicious and defamatory When you ask Flores about that statement what was his reaction So Brian said that the rest will take care of itself Specifically asked him if any assistant coach or other coach could corroborate his story in his exact reply to me was yes a multitude of people can corroborate my story I got to ask you are a pro basketball player You have covered pro sports including the NFL for a long time This story has really shaken athletics What was it like for you to have this conversation with the man at the center of it who has said so little publicly since he filed the suit I can give you the analogy of in football when you want to challenge a call if you throw in the flag right The challenge flag And what you're seeing right now in real time the first time in the history of the NFL you have a black head coach who is throwing the challenge flag at the NFL And everything that I've heard from Brian Flores himself personally has led me to the conclusion that he has evidence to back up his claim So now the question is how will the NFL handle this class action lawsuit moving forward And ultimately will you see that equate to more black head coaches in the game of the NFL in football Jay Williams is host of NPR's new podcast the limits and you can hear his full conversation with Brian Flores on the latest episode J it's good to talk to you Thank you.

I see a lot of these six panels for handicaps at you and they are very sizing but you can go there and see six of them during the course of the season and nearly oldest who this will be contesting them and they will finish in a completely different older. Every time i skill is trying to work out which one is going into and his best handicaps made you got the right girl. It was a time. I used to think loews does not souls on straight six. The favorable side off tracker weather's going to be in the middle and just ignores the the drouin a- a sprint handicap on strike was actually most aussie points. But i'm going to ignore it. Because i think it's far too confusing. Nukem put yourself a potential. And i'll tell you on your golden apollo on a saturday wrong when horses been quite highly. Rated process is actually race in one thousand. Nine eight eighty eight mile and tim easter last couple of races. He seems to be running into form here on andrei for this race. "About that key conversations. If it's not the lakers you don't want to be involved in any way. Speaking like a to go ahead jake. But i was gonna say though. It's guys like i'm at the games right the environmental crazy. Yeah the the home courts have been amazing. They've been amazing. But there is something that I think from a national perspective. Even over the weekend like i. I know there was the home. Run derby coming up and all these other things are happening. There wasn't the same chatter that typically we would have seen about the nba finals. It kinda just went just went dead like nobody even talked about. I mean typically when we have nba finals guys. If there's a weekend some kind of reports coming out some topic is being brought up over the weekend you know one player in particular is becoming a bigger thing but it just seemed like it was like all right now so monday said all right here we are a game. Three and i was like wow. This has a completely different field than nba finals. I've been a part of in the past. You're listening to jason. Williams hosted keyshawn jay williams zubin joining us this morning or kisha j. will ensue. I just felt like i needed to do that. I want to reset man. 'cause i just feel like we had the guys that people are getting in their cars. They have no idea who. We're talking to so i just felt like that. I needed to reset at that point in time. That's all what is wrong with him. Allen no no he's he's he's going to announce her voice which is always a lot of fun. But you know as i was reading that that stat before about devon booker again five hundred points. This season third most by a player in the first career playoffs needs twenty two. Pass rick barry for the all time records. That's incredible brought to you by mike community training for a better life. I'm calling this game tonight though. Jay this is. We talked a lot about you on. This is the devon booker game though. He's he's been a bit of a struggle. They locked him up in game three. There's been so much talk about him and you know. He's talked a lot about the kobe influence on him. And i'll tell you what if if that's what you're about this is that game this game four is your game to show up and show out and see if you can get this thing. Three one back in your building did he. Did he really struggle the first two games though well. He had a great second half. What was it game to write a great second now but if you look at his numbers shooting wise he's not shooting. The basketball was well. He was shooting wail. He wasn't crisp. He was kind of clunky calcium mentioned as well. He has actually shot the basketball well since he broke his nose. Thirty nine percent. I keep going back to saw something. When he played against the clippers that i'm kind of you know. pg tucker's and a great job on him to drew holiday got as well. That patrick beverley matchup with some for him. I'm not sure how. Many times devon has played against somebody at obviously. He hasn't been in this situation before an nba finals at a western conference finals. But going to get somebody who's a tablet smaller than that can get up underneath him and make things uncomfortable for him. But i would agree with you alan. I think that you look for devon to have. I honestly feel. He's going to be the greatest. Phoenix suns player will ever see and i know. That's a who statement. There guys like steve nash to time finals. Mvp there guys. Like charles barkley. Who's an all time. Phoenix suns legend. But i think at the end of the day for the talent that devon booker has it will speak for itself. I mean if he brings a world championship to phoenix. I i think that puts him in. Cpt three and a different stratosphere within the suns organization. I think devon booker has to do more. sometimes i feel like the ball become stagnant. Chris paul's hands. And i would like to see them play when they play. Faster devon get the ball out and the balls in his hands. More sixty. Three's even alluded to it a couple of times where he's like. Sometimes i'm the old man. While when a slow down the pace of the game and that comes at the ball in his hands and him slowing it down. And then running dab off curl screens things of that sort. So i like when they play fast. I like when whoever gets rebound go find open. Threes in transition devon search cooking. Because the more you get him going earlier in the game. I think the better off. They'll be for you long term. And again i wouldn't change a thing if i'm booting hosmer i'd run my saying everything i do everything the same let janas dominate the paint in no room for error whatsoever in terms of ju- holiday up in his face giving him he be able to smell my breath like right there. I'm breathing in his ear all night long. And then when i decided to put him down putting tj tucker right back on him saying thing. I'm not changing the theme from game three. I'm also gonna watch officiating. Because officiating was a factor in game three. They played very physical but eight and was the one in foul trouble. The free throw discrepancy with something monty. Williams pointed out is no question that that was an issue. Janas had more free throw attempts than the entire son's team. Did so you know. I wanna do that again. Game for watch that yeah. They want to but officiating is going to decide whether you can or not. It's just the way it's been scott gloucester. We'll see. I mean if jay scott fosters don't you just one time say i got to get this guy a win because this is what is it like to and fifteen somebody twelve twelve. Think it's like two and fifteen hours the other day. It's absolutely crazy. But but on you know on the booker front. And and i do want to get more into this with you later because what you said. It's pretty strong statement an all time all time. Great in phoenix suns history. It's a french. I've been around. Wild had some great players. But it's possible especially if he can win them their first championship which they win this game. At the age of twenty four st james yeah nasa i'm vp bari. Obviously barkley kevin johnson j. I said tom guys now. Those guys have been able to bring title right from individual greatest title. The only like three. Though right i mean like when you start talking about all the time. Great three sons. It's outrageous statement but it certainly would start here and it would start a game certainly tonight so a lot more to get to certainly on.

"Gonna work out as we move forward. Today, we've got another great slate of games. The Wizards and 70 Sixers started softened one o'clock Lakers and sons are on ABC and ESPN Radio at 3 30 Hawks. Knicks foreign five seed in the East seven o'clock tonight. Then you've got Grizzlies and the Jazz one versus eight in the west at 9:30 P.m.. If Peter Burns always does this if you had the keys to a private jet. You're leaving Miami this morning. Which game would you want to see in person? You can only choose one. A lot of fun stars and all of these games. Frankly, that would be fun to watch in person. I don't know why Peter Burns has to fly private. I mean, I like what he's doing there, but there are commercial flights. I think they go to all of these cities where these games are, so I don't know what we're doing with the PJ, But I'm down to get on impeaching at any point. So if I had to board one today to go to a game Honestly, I'd probably go Lakers Suns, even though I don't necessarily think that's actually going to be the most interesting Syriza amongst the teams. I think that For me. Hawks Knicks is the Syriza that has a ton of question marks, and obviously they're both coming off of significant postseason droughts and rebuilds and I think that that is going to be a fun serious. I don't have a sense for who's going to win that series. I do think with Lakers Suns, though. Obviously you want to see LeBron I think it's fun. A fun story here with Chris Paul is well on the other side of that one. The signs are like the most disrespected two seed in the history of the world, right like I think there's one part I think Bobby marks is the only person at ESPN who chose the Sun's in the Syriza. Everyone's choosing the seven seed Katie in this Syriza Lakers Suns and I feel a little bad for the site into that regard, but I'm one of them. I'm also taking the Lakers in the series because If I was a gambling woman, I'm not betting against LeBron James. Okay, Well, you're not alone. J. Williams, host of Keyshawn J. Well and Zubin. He agrees. Every team has flaws me, especially for the Lakers. Two guys coming off injuries where they find that chemistry. Where's the outside shooting for the Lakers is a narrative that always follows his basketball team. But I like that they grind it out and let the one thing you know when you're going to play against Phoenix. Yeah, the banana boy Boys, banana boat Boys will be back competing against each other. Cp three But the fact is look there young basketball team. This is a better in basketball team. They should be the favorite. That's actually a very good point. In terms of you know the sons being young, although they do have a veteran leader and Chris Paul, who I think is one of the best leaders in the league, But I feel bad for the sons, and then they qualify for the post season For the first time in a decade. They climb all the way up to number two in the West on Lee to be forced to play LeBron James Anthony Davis and the Lakers in the first round after L A, you know, sunk in the standings because they had so many different injuries that they were trying to overcome. So I feel bad. For the Phoenix Suns in that instance, and I hate that everybody's picking the Lakers, but In my mind. I hope they prove everybody wrong. I think there's so gifted and so much fun to watch. They certainly have been, you know, and throughout the regular season, and you know, in the times that the Lakers and sons matched up in that regular season they played three times May 9th the most recent where you know the Lakers actually 11 23 21 10. LeBron was inactive for that one. But the other two games Ah, on in March, both in March, the sons 11 11 to 94 1 14 to 1 of four and LeBron James played on March 2nd and he scored 38 points in the center still able to beat him, so they've won two out of three. Against the Lakers. Now, hopefully that can give him some kind of confidence as they go into this first round. But it'll be interesting to see now that LeBron James and Anthony Davis are, you know, close to being full strength and healthy again. How that'll bold for Ah young team in the sun so That's a good one into your point about the Hawks and the next. I think it's going to be a really gritty one eye experts are saying, you know, the next pretty defense versus Atlantis finesse filled offense. You know who's gonna way out there? But you know Alan Hahn, host of Barton Han. He thinks it's gonna be a close one, too. It's going to be. I think a very even serious I really do and I think it's and I know it's 45. So they're supposed to be right. A 45 Syriza's supposed be even because of the closeness in the seedings. Have the same exact record, and despite the fact that the Knicks were three you know against Atlanta this year, which is how they got the fourth seed. I feel like these air very evenly matched teams and there's a couple reasons why number one. They both have good benches. They both have good veterans coming off those benches. They also both have Poor young players, and I include Randall because he's only the sixth season. That have never been to the postseason. This their first borrow it for a so for them. It's all new experience. Right? So for them, it's also who is going to shine and who might be a little overwhelmed by it. I think both coaches are great coaches. They both are great coaches. And they've also got some really fun players, right? Obviously, we all of watching Trey Young. I think it's interesting. A guy that grew up in my neck of the woods and played for Kentucky down the street from me. Is Julius Randle. I mean, who would have thought that this guy would jump? 28% from behind the arc to 41% and his seventh season like he's somebody that I found is hitting his stride. He's been great for the next and in their resurgence to prominence Finally, so it'll be interesting to see Um how these two teams fare against one another. Could New York when a first round on and then move on to face the 70 Sixers. I mean, that would be great for the city of New York. I know they've been waiting a long, long, long time for this. It'll be interesting to see what kind of fight Atlanta puts up. And so for the winner of this round in New York and Atlanta, waiting on the other side, and I hate to just dismiss the Wizards like this, but It's going to be the Philadelphia 76 years and my question to you, Amber is do you feel like they have the easiest road ahead to make it to the Eastern Conference finals? They certainly don't have the most difficult road. There's that and listen. They're the one seed right. That's the advantage of the one seed. I don't mean to discredit what Russell Westbrook has done this year. Obviously, he's an unbelievably fun player to watch. That's gonna be a lot of fun today. What Bradley Beal is done for that team. I'm with you, though. I think that the 76 years role in that syriza and they have easy street to get to the conference championship if they're able to, But you know whether we get the Hawks or the Knicks. I mean, there is a bit of a wild card factor there where I just don't know what we're going to see from those two teams in the postseason and how competitive they could be even against Philadelphia 76 Ers team..

"Couple quick ones before we get to the bottom of the hour news as we wrap the forests and So this one yesterday, Biden administration now weekend. Most will revive the push to make Harriet Tubman the face new $20 bill. Something was proposed. I think the Obama administration shell during Donald Trump's term and they're actively working to make us reality. It is an interesting time. In our country. Obviously, diversity being a big part of the American story now and if you look at that, the coinage and the paper bills, it doesn't really reflect that reality. It's it's more historical than recent And this update This $20 Notes UPDATE is gonna feature periods have been a former slave who became like the icon of the abolitionist movement. Was supposed to be unveiled on the 100th anniversary of the 19th amendment, which granted the women's right to vote. So that's kind of an interesting development. And I didn't I was gonna spend a lot of time on it. But It is a Reflection on our country that we're finally starting to realize that everything that we do. Whether it's the paper bills we have in our hands or the awareness of people that look differently than we do our or speak differently or come from different places is part of the melting pot that we claim we're Part of in this country since the very beginning, we are Now recognizing that the little things matter in that conversation. This is one of the ways that we can do that. So I think it's a good good one. We should actually change these other countries. The U. K. They're constantly changing their bills. We have, basically in this country stayed with the ones that we've always had and Whether it's Lincoln or Washington. We just Never changed. And maybe change, as they say, is a good thing. Now. This is a local story, and this probably only matters to a few people around here, but It's a big part of my life when I went to U W. M University, Wisconsin Milwaukee Back in the late seventies, early eighties, there was a restaurant here on Oakland Avenue called William Holes in short, would just north of campus. Just west of the campus. Chinese food And itwas at the time kind of unique. There was always Chinese restaurants but for the campus area, and it's it falls into that it was a place where we could go at lunchtime and eat a lot of food for not a lot of money. That makes sense to the don't say that the originators the Chinese buffet, but it was so good They're closing now, after more than 30 years in business because of the impact of covert And it was there a long time. The owner about Ping said it was a good time to retire. It was obviously named after a restaurant to her opened it. You. W m students, local Cantonese dishes, seafood appetizers. Um It's one of those things that changing stories of covert write things that were used to things that were placed were used to going to Kind of disappearing. Remember I've had. I said this before on the air, had a conversation with a restaurant. Consultant. Probably about a year now, but half year ago was the summertime so little more than half a year ago. He said, Steve, You know what we're gonna see. As a result of covert Something like 60% of the restaurants could be gone in a few years, 60% That's not just chains who are are feeling the crunch is well, that's all the little places, including a place like William host. So good luck to the retiring owners. And thanks for all the great meals I touched base with one of my old college buddies who now lives in Southern California. And as soon as I said, William Hoses clawing goes. Oh, my God! No more buffets. It was their food was amazing. And for a college student in late seventies, early eighties man was that good. I said, half of my food intake. William Hose, fast food and then, of course, beer. That was my life Was your sodium levels look like good 78. Then I was thin as a rail, so I don't know what happened Probably age. But thanks for the folks of Liam Hose and you will be missed, including Not just Yu WN students, but all the folks in short in the short area, right right down the street here from radio City, So I will miss you guys and good luck in your retirement. All right, it is 10 30 Grill quick after the break. We're gonna talk about vaccines with represented for the Medical College of Wisconsin.
