"It. Do they stop doing it? In college stadiums and stuff like that. Everybody's playing those trumpets now. What's funny is that William Contreras for the braves have been doing it all year and no one noticed. Because Diaz was getting all the pub food. That's New York City, man. It's New York City. Yankees guardians. I mean, how about that? Are you worried guardians look great? I've worked of course I'm worried about anything. It's baseball playoffs. One guy gets on. You think he's going to score every single time? How about that? How about that? You had an elimination game guardians eliminate the rays in a game that went scoreless into the 15th and the Mariners eliminate the Blue Jays in a game that went ten 9. After a wild collision and 7 run comeback. I know. Two completely opposite ends of the spectrum of Major League Baseball playoff games. I also like being interested in, I would never watch a raise guardians game. You know what I mean? And now I'm super locked in because it's playoff. There you go. Now it's Yankees guardians. Mariners, the Yankees guardians is the only divisional matchup that's not a divisional game. Digital divisional series. You got Padres Dodgers. You gotta be great. Philly's braves. You've got ASTRO's Mariners, then you got Yankees guardians. You're out? Yeah. Okay. Absolutely. Sixers are gonna be really good this year, so there you go. I was gonna go to the clippers game yesterday, but I just knew the baseball game wasn't over and I'm like, I'm not gonna make it there in time. Plus, you were watching you watching the cowboys and rims, right? Oh, that was well over. Okay. Oh, gotcha. And Kawhi is swollen. Bro the other thing was I was like, well, why is that going to play anyway? And then he ended up playing. Well, speaking of swollen in the NBA, I'm assuming it does describe Jordan Poole's jaw. Draymond green had something to say over the weekend. I bet on what he has wrought on the defending NBA champions. That's coming up. Your phone calls at 8 four four two O four rich number to dial. Also on the program overreaction Monday and max Crosby of the Las Vegas Raiders going into a big week 5 finale tonight. You can listen to the NFL and the NFL app on Westwood one sports dot com via Westwood one station streams are by asking Alexa to open Westwood one sports. If it's the NFL, it's on Westwood one. Hey, look, the warriors know what they haven't draymond green. They got a future Hall of Famer who plays with fire and clearly I don't just mean what's in his belly. I mean, the guy plays with figurative fire. I don't know what the hell happened that caused him to smack sucker punch his teammate in the face. And that is smart. I mean, I don't know what caused him to do that. And if the video didn't come out, I have no idea if we'd be talking about it like this or if draymond green would have had a press conference over the weekend or if he would have been able to find it within himself to take time away from the team. But the video came out and the Mohan is on. I'm really surprised rich about the amount of people who seem to be more upset that the video got out than by the actual. Well, yeah, right. So many people were like, this guy's got to get fired. Well, it's because it's a two part thing. Obviously what draymond did is reprehensible beyond the pale and to me couldn't tear apart a locker room significantly enough that this team might not win at all this year. That whatever draymond's done behind the scenes or any of the teammates might have been happening behind the scenes that tore the team apart or tour the team of sunder or makes it more difficult for Steve Kerr to work his magic. You know, we don't know because it didn't get out, but if I'm the warriors, I'm like, how many of our practices can be seen? And sold to TMZ. Like, that's like somebody sneaking video of whatever goes on in your house and putting it out there. You'd be walking around your house looking for where the camera is or whatever. No matter what was being videoed and sent out within the house. And that's a serious breach. That's a major problem. You feel like you've been robbed, I think. Somebody's broken into your house. Anybody who's ever had somebody burglarize their house, you walk back into your house, you don't look at it differently. For a long time. And I think that's what the warriors are going through right now. I've had that happen to me. Housewives. This is just kind of a different though. An assault at a practice. No, I'm just, I'm talking about the way that you're viewing your setup, your house, forget just and I know what he did is totally egregious. I'm saying the reason why people are pointing this out is do you have a problem? Within your own house, even if everything is copacetic, let's say somehow some way Jordan Poole can get over being hit in the face. I wouldn't. I wouldn't have I wouldn't look at draymond green the same way again. And if I'm a teammate at draymond green's, you know, how many more times can you put aside whatever he's done for the sake of the championships of yesteryear and this year? Which is part of the reason why I think draymond has realized this feels different. This is more than just kicking LeBron and the nuts during an NBA Finals or having an argument with Kevin Durant in front of full view. I mean, this is much more different than anything else. He is, damn near rearrange the face of a teammate, the video does change everything. It went from just something we heard to now you see it, and so draymond apologized that he apologized to pool and he's going to apologize to the family because the families are all going to get together for a ring ceremony soon. And I think he realizes that something's different here, although the initial reaction from the warriors was like draymond's crossed the line before he's come back, something that bob Myers at GM had to say about it. But even curry said that this is not acceptable behavior. There was draymond green in his apology press conference. There is a.

"And some expert power users will be moderating that panel. So if you've been hesitant at all because you're afraid to dip your toe into the waters of stad head, do they are cool and healing waters. But there is a slight learning curve and adjustment, but really it's a fun one. You get to poke around and figure out all of the options available to you and that the powers that you have suddenly been granted, but there is a webinar, so you can check that out on Monday. If you're on the fence and maybe that will push you over to one side of the fence, hopefully gently. So, a couple other stat blasts. Now, one is a follow-up to a previous step last. So as you will recall, we recently used stat head to determine that those Atlanta Braves, they have one of the biggest day night splits ever. Yes. They have been bad in day games. And we got an email from listener Matthew, who said, I wanted to provide some insight on the day night splits as a Yankees fan and I noted that the Yankees last year had a slightly more extreme day night split than the braves do this year. So Matt says as a Yankees fan, I noticed many people complained last year that the Yankees put suboptimal teams out for day games. No evidence of this but would love to hear if there's any substance behind the claim and if it applies to the braves and I guess it would make sense probably I haven't looked at just what's the day night split for every team in history, but you do tend to rest some starters saying big games, right? You might not start your catcher in the day game after the night game. So you might think that on the whole you would have slightly less than your a lineup in day games in general. So I didn't look into the Yankees case specifically. And in fact, I didn't look into in this case specifically, but someone else did. Or listeners sometimes take these things upon themselves. So we got an email from JR in Philly, who wrote in response to your discussion of Atlanta's significantly worse record in day games, I had a theory that a manager may be more likely to give better hitters the day off for day games. I thought this might be significant, particularly if a team has a decent hidden catcher, like Travis Darnell, or William Contreras. Sure. Or a star player returning from an injury like Ronald Acuna or Asia's. So he says I downloaded Atlanta splits from the season and looked at each player's plate appearances as a percentage of the team's total. There's a spreadsheet which I will link to. Atlanta does have a one 15 WRC plus and night games and a 99 WRC plus a day games, but it doesn't appear to be because of lineup decisions. Yeah. Only Travis darnold has a significantly lower percentage of the teams played appearances in day games and while there are no does have a one 24 WRC plus this season. Those played appearances have largely gone to William Contreras, who has a one 38 plus he says instead I found that nearly every hitter in Atlanta's lineup has hit better this season at night. Sometimes significantly so, Contreras, I'll be darn old, Michael Harris, or Linda arcia, and Eddie or zaria all have WRC plus this season that are least 35 points higher in night games than day games. Wow. Going a step further. I always like it when someone goes a step further. I often take a step too far. JR might be doing that too. All right, listeners are great. I used each player's full season WRC plus to calculate what it landed expected team WRC plus would have been in day games and night games if each hitter hit for their full season WRC plus in both day and night games. I found that in that scenario they're expected team WRC plus would be one O 9 and day games in one ten in night games, so my theory that the team's better hitters got more days off during day games didn't hold up. What's more interesting is I took a look at the team's pitching splits and found the exact opposite. Atlanta has a 3.37 team ERA and night games and a 3.65 team ERA in day games and the difference appears to be entirely attributable to who was on the mount. I calculated the team's expected ERAs and day games and neck games in a scenario where every Atlanta pitcher pitched to their full season ERA in both they gave the night games and found that their expected team ERAs matched their real ears exactly. In other words, while some Atlanta pitchers have pitched better at night or during the day those differences evened out exactly instead, the difference seems to be that the teams better pitchers faced fewer batters in day games, max freed and Spencer strider who have Ares in the two started only 11 day games this season combined. Meanwhile, Charlie Morton, who has a 4.29 ERA, has started 14 day games on his own, and Kyle Mueller made both of his starts during the day and racked up a 10.57 ERA. So there you have it, Atlanta hitters have randomly and almost universally hit worse during day games and their better pictures have pitched more during night games. Presumably by chance, I would imagine. So that's the explanation and or non explanation for Atlantis extreme dates but thank you, JR for saving me all that effort that probably would not have put in, but thank you. Come on, Ben. You probably would have. Yeah, I'm not above doing that for other questions. I just don't know that I would have for this particular question. But I appreciate that JR did. Okay. A few more here. So here's a question from Joey, who says my wife is a lifeline Yankees fan and got me into baseball in my early 30s, so I'm one of the few fans. You all have talked about on the show. I noticed a Yankee score a couple of weeks ago that was the start of the Fibonacci series. Speaking of nerdy questions yeah, specifically, the game was the Yankees angels game on August 30th, the Yankees score went one in the first, one in the second, two in the third, three in the fourth, and then they did not score the rest of the game. I was wondering how common this series is in baseball and whether anyone has gotten longer into the sequence than this. I can't imagine many teams have gotten to 5 and few if any have gotten to 8. If we were pedantic about the sequence and who isn't about baseball, the sequence would more appropriately be zero one one two three 5 8 1321 for a 9 in a game. So Ryan looked this up and found that by the pedantic definition of starting with zero, there have been 341 games that have kept up the pattern through the fourth, 11 that kept it through the 5th and none that made it to the 6th. Wow. So the 5th is as far as it goes. There's a little list of those games which I will make available. By the other definition, he says 23 teams made it through the fourth none made it to the 5th. Three seems to be the max in the sequence. In fact, he says I confirmed that there has never been a one one two three 5 sequence in any game period. The closest I have found was the White Sox went one one two three four in the third to 7th innings on October 3rd, 1991, and I bet everyone watching at home thought they're doing they almost Fibonacci here.

People of color are always put down because of the way they look or some people's ideas think they can't do as much. So putting Serena as a role model and all she's done is really good. Tennis coach Joanna Rosario says through all the adversity Serena Williams has prevailed. "He has given up 9 home runs in 60 and two thirds of them, 9 bombs and 62 annex on the road so he has been having that issue now for Charlie morny has been able to get a little bit over ten and a half strikeouts per 9 and he says, well, and for Taiwan walker, last time he faced off against the online braves, it did not go well. He gave up 8 runs in Atlantic. I certainly think that we're going to be able to expect a little bit of a better effort here from our good friend mister Taiwan walker as Jacob look what he's been able to do over his life sensors he has given up three runs or fewer in 8 of them was able to get up off the mat, 6 strong innings against the Cincinnati reds to be able to shake off while wound up happening against Atlanta on the quiet side, but we do know that this is an Atlanta race scene that they do have a whole bunch of power in their lineup. You've got awesome Riley who's been able to bought it two 95. It's cooled down a little bit recently, but so let's make them a few supply 30 plus home runs for this bunch. William Contreras is very underrated in my opinion. Igo Z for a 16th armor on the season yesterday easing a two 60 Ronald lacuna junior 360 five on base. He's been sold at being able to move the line battles and over the last 30 days. He has really been able to pick it up in terms of the 8 home runs over the course of his last 95 at bad stance V Swanson. He's able to give you 15 plus home runs. He's getting at two 90 along with Michael iris the second and then for the mets, it says about an equally impressive light up as well. Pete Alonso, one of the big leagues in terms of home runs on the road biases. If he has been having an amazing year this year, hitting it two 80, 29 bombs, 97 RBI. That's towards the top of the managed Lake, starling Marte to be able to move the line knitting at two 90 Brandon near more Francisco Lindor, marcana, only between about two 64 to two 70, Jeff McNeil, sitting above a three hour, and for the mets, this has been a top 8 bullpen in terms of VRA overlays 45 or so days. They've been able to really piece it together. Michael givens is that bubble they expected when they acquired them at the trade deadline but edamame sub two 5 eura Adonis Medina is someone they like is a long guy south Lugo has been much better in that sort of bridge role to Edwin Diaz, who has been the best closer in the big leagues this season for Lugo, sub two ERA over lives for 8 days, but for the Atlanta Braves, AJ mentor has been rock solid all season long and seen a couple of falters

"We've got 5 confirmations for the home run Derby and you could shut it down now and it would be a great Pete Alonso defend two time defending champion Ronald lacuna junior Albert pools Juan Soto Kyle schwarber were waiting for official confirmation on Giancarlo Stanton. We're waiting for official confirmation on Julio Rodriguez, who you mentioned before, he's an exciting player. You know, we'll see if Will Smith has added the all star team. There's been talk that maybe he would be the guy who would represent the Dodgers and Dodger stadiums home run Derby. What do you think? Yeah. You know, I was asked the other day on a radio hit about Pujols doing the home run Derby. Why would you not want to see Albert Pujols in the home run Derby? I get it. He's going to win probably not, but let's see how he does. One of the greatest hitters of all time, you know, doing the home run Derby at what 43, 42 years old. Yeah, I'm pumped. And the fact that Soto and Acuna are doing it again, that's great for the sport. Because we see a lot of these young guys. They do it once, and that's it. And it's easy. Look, it's tough competition. There's always the risk of somebody getting hurt, which we think what happened to Aaron judge back in 2017 when he heard his shoulder. So I love the fact that those guys don't have to do it and they're coming back to do it again. Yeah, look, I'm not going to pick our pools to win the event. Right. I'm probably going to wind up picking Juan Soto because I just saw last year. I mean, that guy was motivated. He really wants to win, you know, you got Pete Alonso's experience. But I would say this, what is Albert Pujols struggles now at is a player in his early 40s. It's not hitting the ball far. He's problem is catching up with velocity. And that's not an issue in this event. I could easily see him being the guy who gets into a groove and just rips out a bunch of home runs and shocks everybody. And yeah, his swing more than ever is tailored for fly balls. That's kind of all he hits when he does connect. So yeah, you know, the raw power means maybe he doesn't, that's what makes a Lonzo so good. Alonso doesn't have to work hard to hit home runs because he's so strong. And that fits pool. So yeah, maybe he'll shock us here. All right, I know something about the all star selections has gotten new to your skin. We'll start with this. They tweeted out yesterday after some additions were made to the all star roster JD Martinez among the three players added yesterday. I tweeted out this morning that, hey, who's the guy who's not on the team who's now most worthy, some of the candidates that I threw out there, Josh bell, Austin Riley, Freddie Freeman, Daniel Bard, ty France, of your Mariners. Some of the tweets followed that with mention Zach Wheeler, Dylan cease. There's Kyle Wright, there's Spencer strider. There's tummy Edmond. What about you? If you were to pick one guy, I'd like to see added. Well, my one guy, well, there's two. Can I say to go Austin Riley and Freddie Freeman? And here's my rant. All right, Bryce Harper voted in as the DH in the national league injured camp play. Why do we need to put two other DHS on that roster? William Contreras. It's a nice story. The guy has a 140 at bats. You know, he's really OPS over 900. He's been great, but he's not at all star. And then they added Garrett Cooper of the Marlins. Great for him. You know, kind of one of those vets that just hangs around and a nice player, but Fred, why are you picking Garrett Cooper and William Contreras over Austin Riley and Freddie Freeman? The goal should be to get the best players to the All-Star Game and these last two fill ins are not good choices. No, I completely agree with you. I think that as I talked about with Tim on Monday, you should use the DH for some flexibility for adding guys who from other spots who haven't been able to fit in, maybe because there's a position saturated with great players. You know, third base, for example, this year it's nationally first base, has a lot of guys. So you can squeeze those in. Shoot, if you walked up the William Contreras today and said, what's your position? He's not going to tell you he's a DH. So the idea that he's on the all star team, as you said with a 143 plate appearances, is kind of silly. And it's funny in the way braves fans who give them credit, they hit the ballot box, but in a way, they screwed Austin Riley, who's a great player and was great last year. Out of a roster or by voting for William Contreras. And yeah, look, I remember years ago, the American League had Derek Jeter, nomar Garcia Parra, Alex Rodriguez, and Omar vizquel. And they found a way to put all four of those shortstops on the roster. So yeah, you're right. If a position is loaded, who cares? Find a way to get the best players there. Yeah. And hopefully that'll happen. I mentioned that, yeah, I think the question about Will Smith is whether or not there's going to be a spot on the roster for him, and if there is and maybe he becomes the 8th guy in the home run Derby. Our old friend and colleague, Jason stark Hall of Famer, reported this week about the pie slice experiment with defensive shifts that there's going to be this area behind and around second base where defenders are not going to be allowed to stand because baseball wants to restore the good old fashioned single through the middle of the field. When you read this, what did you think? Well, I get it. I think what they're finding out is Jason pointed out and his article is that limiting the shift in the minor leagues actually isn't adding all that many base hits. You know, 'cause you can still stand a guy right behind the second base and cut off those hits up the middle. So yeah, this will add more hits, no doubt, I'm torn on the whole thing, you know, in the end though it gets to, what do you want to reward? That's why the second baseman plane in shallow rape field always bothers me because if you hit a 110 mile an hour laser and there's this guy playing there, you did your job and you're getting you're not getting rewarded, you know, but at 8 hopper up the middle, do we want to reward that? You know, I guess that's what we're debating. So I don't know, I'm okay if it gets a few more hits in the game, I guess maybe that's good. As we've done all these rule changes in recent years, putting the runner at second base in X three innings, et cetera. I've got to the point on it where it's to me. It's all like plastic surgery. You want to create what you want to create.

"We'll see how this blazers team competes in a stacked Western Conference. Okay, let's move over to baseball where we have a new crop of MLB all stars. Bits and pieces of the rosters have trickled out over the past few days, but the league revealed the complete rosters on Sunday as we are now just over a week out from the All-Star Game. That's right, baseball is going full Hollywood this year holding the all star festivities at Dodger Stadium and perhaps we could see an all LA showdown to start things off. Clayton Kershaw and Shohei Ohtani, the two star pitchers out of Los Angeles, they both were voted starters for the All-Star Game. Ohtani is also the AL's starting DH as he was last year. Otani's teammate Mike Trout is an all star for the 9th straight season, which is the longest streak among active players. And for me, tiff probably the coolest thing to look for during the All-Star Game will be the Contreras family affair on the field. Brothers Wilson and William Contreras both will be starters for the NL, Wilson at catcher, representing the cubs, and William at DH representing the braves. William will play in place of Bryce Harper, who won the fan vote at DH, but will be out with a thumb fracture suffered in late June. Here is William Contreras on how he thinks his parents will feel watching that moment. Incredible. I mean, I can't even begin to imagine how they're going to be feeling knowing how excited I am. If I'm at a loss for words, I can't even begin to think how they're going to be feeling. So it's going to be something incredible for them to be able to watch both of their kids together out there. Man, so cool. Now we've seen a couple sets of brothers play in the same All-Star Game before. It last happened in 2003, with Brett and Aaron Boone, yes, that Aaron Boone, who's now the manager of the New York Yankees. Yeah, you gotta love that family affair, like you said. All right, continuing with baseball, our final feel good story of the day comes to you from Baltimore. Baltimore, yes, an Orioles fans have something to feel good about finally. The Baltimore Orioles have won 8 games in a row, something the team has not done since 2005. Tip, is this real life or is this just fantasy? Oh, it's real and it's fantastic for Orioles fans. Except there is one caveat. This is hope for the future. Baltimore has been the doormat of the AL east for the last few years, losing more than a hundred games in three of the last four seasons. But with those losses, came draft picks. Guys like Trey Mancini, Ryan mount castle, Cedric Mullins, adley rushman, and Tyler wells. They've also managed to turn other teams prospects into solid starters through the rule 5 draft, which is basically a Jeffery guys who haven't made their teams 40 man roster, like Anthony Santander, and Jorge Lopez, who happens to be Baltimore's only ulcer this year. Now take all these young guys, put them up against the struggling Texas Rangers and Los Angeles angels, and you have yourself a victorious 7 game home stand. Here's catcher adley rushman talking about their win streak after Sunday's game. The winds are showing up a little bit right now and it's just fun to be around the atmosphere is great and most importantly the guys are just full of character and life and they're fun to be around every day. It's fun to show up. Full of character and life gets somehow this 24 year old is this calm, so I'm gonna get excited for him. The Orioles are now one game under 500, only two gigs back from a wild card birth. Now, do I think they'll somehow overtake the Yankees to win the alias? No way. Could they beat out the Red Sox rays or blue cheese for one of those wildcard spots? Maybe. But this is a fun time to be an Orioles fan and we'll see what the future brings. Wow, all I can say is soak it up Baltimore. That's it for today. I'm Sarah kazel. And I'm Tiffany oshinsky, thanks for listening. If you like our show, please give us a 5 star rating and review. "It's not like the mets have had a classic mets collapse or anything like that, but the braves just have not been beaten and they've been playing weak teams during that stretch. So there's something to be said for that. They played like the rockies and the pirates and the a's, I think, and maybe one game against the Diamondbacks. So not your strongest opponents, but they have, I don't know, cut the mets lead in half or so. It's a race again, I think. So the braves are 5 and a half back as we speak of the mets and they're making things interesting and I guess it's been a bit of a team effort. It's been players they've promoted from within. It's been some rookies. It's been pitchers who've done well. Like Spencer strider moved into the rotation and Kyle Wright has been very good this year and they've kind of picked up the slack for Charlie Morton and Ian Anderson and then a lot of the bullpen has been very effective, not always the same guys who were great in last year's playoffs, but other guys they've been very good and then of course you have rookies like I guess in center field Michael Harris has come up and has been great defensively and has also hid and William Contreras has been good, but also Ronald Acuna. Has been back and he has really been back. He has not missed beat. He has a one 60 WRC plus this year, which is right where he was the last couple of seasons. He was like one 58 one 57. So he is right where he was and he has seemingly lost some sprint speed. I don't know if he's lost it or if he is just taking it a little bit easy as he comes back, but he's lost a foot plus per second and he's gone down from the 97th percentile to the 73rd percentile in sprint speed, but he's still stealing a lot of bases. He's stolen 11 in 14 attempts. So he is hitting like his old self and he is running like his old self and overall he has been the braves best hitter during the streak, so having him, which they did not for April. That's a big boon too. So we thought the braves were good and they look pretty good lately. It's one of those things where team adds back exceptionally good player. Suddenly is playing better news. Right. Yeah, maybe not that shocking, but. No. But, you know, when you have a guy coming back from an injury like that, you don't totally know what you're gonna get. So a reassuring bit of expectation coming true to be sure. Yeah, and, you know, the mets still have a 61% chance to win the division according to the playoff ads, but slower than it was, so suddenly you're looking at your injured aces and thinking, yeah, we might actually need those guys and then we might need them to come back. So, and in the NL west, because of the Dodgers sweep in the loss of viewer, they're down to 52.4% chance to win the division. So Padres and giants still in the running that is very much a race even though the Dodgers have been great. Well, and one of those things where you look at it and you're like, there's your expectation of winning the division. There's your expectation of making the playoffs. And then you have to grapple with the reality of what happens when you do, but your down guys like that. And hopefully his injury recovery progresses the way that they hope it will, and he is able to come back and have a couple of starts in September and then go on in October run, but it makes you feel less certain than you were before. And this was a team that, you know, despite all of its strength, we were, we were a little bit nervous about what the rotation depth would mean. And we're having to test that much earlier into the year than I think a lot of people were hoping. It would help if they could hit though, you know. That's the other thing is that they just the last little bit, not for a long time. They just haven't been scoring that many runs, which is while given the run differential we talked about last week. All right, well let's end with the past blast. Fast blast. This is episode 1862, and we will be talking about 1862. There was a Civil War on, it was not a great time, but let's talk about baseball because baseball was still happening during that time too. So first I will just follow up. We talked about base hits last time, the definition of a base hit, like what qualifies as a base hit is a home run, a base hit, just because does it have to be a single base? You and I, I think we agreed that generally the way we would use this is to talk about a single, right? Yes. But technically any kind of hit is a base hit. Rule 9.05 of the MLB rule book says a base hit is a statistic credited to a batter when such batter reaches base safely as set forth in this rule 9.05. The official score shall credit a better with a base hit when the batter reaches first base or any succeeding base safely on a fair ball that settles on the ground that touches a fence before being touched by a Fielder, or is that clears offense. So technically, a home run is a base hit according to the rulebook. Now, Richard hershberger, who has been supplying our past blasts here, historian saber researcher and author of the book strike for the evolution of baseball, he provided some historical perspective on the term base hit. So he says the historical pedantic explanation of the term base hits is that it is a shortening of first base hits. So this term arose in the late 1860s with a column in box scores labeled one B this did not mean signals, but rather hits in which the batter reached at least first base without the benefit of an error. This awkward construction was necessary because the word hit was used in its ordinary sense of any time the batter hit the ball, whether fair or fell, and whether or not it was caught. So the one B column appeared in box scores into the 1890s, but was gradually displaced by the shorter B as the long form first base hits dropped out of common usage in favor of the shorter base hits. This in turn was gradually but not completely displaced by the yet shorter form hits, as reflected by the H in modern box scores. In the meantime, the official definition in the rules has remained substantially unchanged. The technical terms hit base hit and first base hit are synonymous, the difference is merely one of how many syllables you want to use. So that's why we say base hit, that is actually shortened first base hit, and we could shorten it further just to say hit, but we haven't completely lost the base hit construction. And I think it's still useful for a single just to specify that it is a one base hit. And listener Joe wrote in to say he had a thought about this. I tend to think of a base hit as a hit that isn't yet defined. So it mostly gets used this way a ball drops in for a hit, the announcer says a base hit for so and so, but we won't know if it's a single or a double or whatever until the play is over a few seconds later, but we know they've gotten a hit of some kind. The reason I think this doesn't really apply to homers is that it's very rare to know someone got a hit before you know they hit a home run. Almost all potential home runs that don't.

Albeit continues to hit the ball over the wall and they get a really important start for a veteran Charlie Morton. They've gotten good pitching, but Charlie Morton has not been as consistent as they would like Charlie had a really good game yesterday game 5 innings and giving give up much at all. That's really important for the Atlanta Braves moving forward. Rumors, by the way, lose a couple over the weekend. The brewers are in really, really good shape. It's an offense to the scoring a lot of runs, something they haven't done, Yelich looks like he's sort of profoundly swing again. There are plus 36 when it comes to run differential and they begin this next week in 19 and ten. They lead the Cardinals by two and a half. We'll see the Cardinals and giants next Sunday on Sunday Night baseball. Next launched a rare one, by the way, would match Scherzer started. They played two yesterday. They lose the game that Scherzer strikes they end up winning in game two. Pete Alonso had himself a massive, massive Mother's Day, Sunday. The two O.

"Losing to the Braves starting pitching matchup in this one. Adrian Hauser on the mound for the crew. Drew Smyly going for Atlanta would be the Brewers, who would strike first in the bottom of the second inning. Avisail Garcia leave the inning off with a double A Travis Shaw ground out moves Garcia to third. And that brings up Louise Aureus. Now the pitch swinging a bullet hit after global Dansby Swanson in the left field on Gloria's will get the runner home sound. They score that one. I think it's gonna be in areas should have caught it. At least for now. That's being ruled a base hit. Although Dansby Swanson would commit an air later on in the inning, But the Brewers weren't able to take advantage of it. They get the one run on two hits. They strand two runners there in the second and say one. Nothing game going into the third. This was a neighboring houses would start to a run into a little bit of trouble. Very angry and so would lead the inning. Awful. They walked and Freddie Freeman with line out a wild pitch from Hauser would send Adrian's a two second. Then they walked to Marcela Zuna that puts runners on at 1st and 2nd. Ozzy al Bees, then lines out. But then Dansby Swanson walks so that loads the bases for Austin Reilly swinging a bouncer off of Hauser. Deflection. Maria's can't get it. One run is in house is going to come in. Ozuna scores to make it a 21 Atlanta lead It deflected off of Hauser. Horace was going over to get it and he might have had a chance to get it if it doesn't hit Hauser That would push wants into third than William Contreras is hit by a pitch so multiple walks a hit batter there in the inning. Hauser would get out of it with a strikeout to enter and see our days. The Braves leave him loaded. They put do put two runs across there in the third, and it is a 21 game. That would be it for

"Two is in the dirt. I see what you're getting at. Oh, you know. Or, you know, the other thing that he could do would be to hit two homers and a double and haven't even better night. Yeah, but that wouldn't be as exciting it, Z. There's a 12 That's downstairs. It's funny to watch Ranger Suarez into this game. He's thrown about 92. And that is these days, the version of the soft tossing lefty It's ridiculous. Go out out of L. A city in the sport. Here's the pitch, and that's downstairs at 92. Now it's three and to dance be Swanson won out, man. It 1st 51 Braves bottom sins, I'll book. How about Nola, though I mean or seam fastball, averaging 92.6 miles per hours, got one of the lowest opponents. Batting averages. For the last couple of seasons. "They didn't rule out the possibility he could play tonight. When we talk to Brian said Kurt. Four o'clock he should. I don't know yet. We're putting him through testing. Well at 5 45 today, the Braves had made the decision. He's gonna play tonight. So less than a day after he got hit by a pitch. He's back in the lineup and leading off the Braves. Waske are, you know? Uh, he gets the ball for the Braves tonight. Why do you consider this a big star for the young right hander? Well, let's face it. It's on a big stage. He's facing the Phillies, and it's another indication for him. I think that he's now climbed up into the next echelon of pitchers in recent years. He's been a guy who struggled with throw strikes. But in talking with Rick Granite there, pitching coach He really feels like that. By simplifying their his delivery. He's able to throw strikes more. And of course, he's shown he can swing the bat. No doubt well, it's No doubt. No doubt it yet a couple of Jackson his last two games going yard, including a grand slam. It certainly shown that Buster with Travis d'Arnaud out William contrast, the younger brother of Wilson has taken over behind the plate for Atlanta. How have the controllers Brothers helped each other. You know, during the shutdown last year, they lived together and they sent out on instagram video of them playing whiffle ball against each other. But it went beyond that. In the last year, the Braves really worked with William Contreras. On receiving and on pitched calling on during that shut down. The conversation between the brothers were Wilson Contreras helping William contrasts with his hitting And William controls going to his older brother is saying, Look, these are the things we're working on with receiving, and with pitch calling. And so they both have gotten better during that time. Now, you know, Wilson is a very emotional, high energy type guy. William is not quite the same. But in talking with granite, he said He sees a young catcher, incredibly engaged with a great field for what pictures are doing. Freddie Freeman, buster reigning M V P hitting near 200, though what's been behind this early season struggles struggles against fastballs. Think about last year when he won the M V P at 4 35 against fastballs. So far this year, just 1 51 and in talking with Brian Victor about that, he said. No, it's only matter of time eventually is gonna hit. They feel like that. Freddie is making a lot of hard contact. Kidding. It's a bad luck. A snicker said. You know every great hit or go through stretch every season, which they may have some struggles, he said. Now spread each time. Eventually he's gonna hit. You have to anticipate that more from Buster only later than about the surprising team leading the National League West. I'm Jim Brass ball. This is baseball tonight on ESPN Radio and the ESPN APP.
