Did you guys know that Ronald McDonald was almost a space like an astronaut or a cowboy and not a clown? That we came very close to having an astronaut be the mascot for McDonald's. I did not know that. I'm not a fan of clowns at all and Ronald McDonald has always kind of been off putting for me. But he actually was part of a commercial for one of the McDonald's locations in Washington, D.C., and in the ad, he had hamburgers tucked into his belt. He had a McDonald's drink cup for a nose. He was wearing a hat made out of a tray with a giant styrofoam burger fries and a milkshake on it. And that was before he got into his kind of, you know, yellow jumpsuit, bright red hair, red and white striped shirt. I don't know, and this was in he made his appearance in Washington D.C. in 1963, where I think we can all agree. That's ground zero for clowns. So he fit right in there. I don't know. I don't know what it was about that ad that people customers and McDonald's executives, everybody was like, we love this guy, and he and that is how they locked in to having Ronald McDonald as a challenge. Do you know who the guy did I read? Was it Willard Scott? It was Willard Scott, who was a lot of people won't know who he is. I read this somewhere. You just scratch my memory there. Willard Scott was a beloved weatherman on The Today Show, right? Right for years. Yeah. And the reason I know that is a friend of mine was the Ronald McDonald sometime years later. And idolized Willard Scott, which is part of the reason why he ended up getting the gig. So you had a friend that actually became the Ronald McDonald in the Washington D.C. area because they used to do so many appearances at so many of the stores. That was I mean, that was a real job. And then there was the guy who played it on the TV commercial. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. It's just so funny that that is a real job. And he did look up to the original Ronald McDonald. Exactly right. What a great country. His other career was radio, so it really does work. Same thing. Listen to what else I learned about McDonald's that shocked me. So the very first Big Mac was not called a Big Mac. It was created by a McDonald's owner in Pittsburgh. And I think I remember it was 1967, and it had the two beef patties, special sauce lettuce cheese, because I'm sesame seed bun. It was the whole thing. It was 45 cents back then. It didn't have a name. But customers and Pittsburgh absolutely loved it. So the McDonald's marketing department got together and said, we should put this in all of our McDonald's, and we need to come up with a fun name. So there was a 21 year old woman working as a secretary in the marketing department of McDonald's. Her name was Esther glickstein rose. And she said, what's called a Big Mac. And everyone laughed and made fun of her and said, that's a stupid name. And then of course you're kidding. Then, of course, the Big Mac became one of the best known product names in the history of earth. And it wasn't until 1985 that McDonald's finally acknowledged, oh yeah, Esther rose are the secretary named the Big Mac. Now she didn't get, I know you're what you're about to ask. Yeah. She didn't get any money. She got no money. No, she got nothing. She's got nothing but mockery. Here was another thing I learned about McDonald's. Well, why wouldn't they get money back then? What was the year that she came up with that roughly? Like 67? Okay. The McDonald's brothers got screwed out of money. So why would she get money? So listen to this. I did not know this. When chicken McNuggets were invented, McDonald's sold them in four shapes, so you would buy an a box of chicken McNuggets. You'd get a bell, a ball, a boot, and a bow tie. And they would roll, they had like a cookie cutter machine that would press the nuggets into these shapes. They don't do that anymore. I think in part because then people would be forced if you're getting a piece of chicken shaped like a boot, you're pretty sure that that didn't come from a chicken. That's sort of factory product. I just one step over the line. I just washed this on the food that made America. And so they tried all kinds of different ways that we're going to do it originally. They came up with a chicken pot pie because it was this whole move against beef. And we got to have chicken. Well, it's chicken, but it's like fried. So they came up with this process where they would grind it up and the guy that did it was I believe he was for like from France. And he said, we should have a dipping sauce and he said, which one do you like of these? And then the Ray Kroc said, I like all of them. And that's why you have all these different flavors of dipping sauces that go with it. Did you ever see the movie the founder, which is about Ray Kroc, who took over from the McDonald brothers and stole the business. Michael Keaton, Michael Keaton plays Ray Kroc and he says this one thing and I bet this was true. Somebody's, you know, the McDonald's brothers were promised a couple of $1 million and that never even showed up. And somebody asked croc, what was it about McDonald's that really made it take off more than anything else? And he said, it was the name. McDonald's. If it was a Crocs, no, if it was Anderson's no, it was that name McDonald's. It's such a great name. And that is, if you've never watched it, it's such a good movie, Michael Keaton. It's amazing. And it will have you feeling so much sympathy for the original McDonald brothers. Really, really did not get it their way at all. It's bob and sherry. And there have been a handful of remakes of it ever since. And they, first of all, the way that they sold this movie was a lie. They sold it as a true story, and here's something I didn't know, the Texas chainsaw massacre was considered so gruesome that it got banned in 11 countries, and some of those countries in case you're wondering like, well, of course they banned it in her cuts. No, Brazil, Chile, Finland, France, Ireland, Iceland, West Germany, Norway, Singapore, Sweden, just to name a few. So I've never seen the whole original Texas chainsaw massacre all the way through. "In one hour and you have to go through all these on 58 oops and then disarm it with like .5 seconds left like, oh my God, we got it. But no, from the get go, you have a built in time of whatever 58 minutes and the guy is going to show up. But these other planes have 90 minutes and they're going to ride a fuel. This movie did such a good job of playing the Chekhov's gun card, where at the very beginning, she shows her the taser and says, next time somebody says something to me, I'm just going to knock him out with a taser. That porker Willard Scott. And then straight up later in the movie. She uses the taser to knock out the reporter. But the completely ignore the Chekhov's gun opportunity of we have this technology with the phone doesn't come into play in the actual plot where it's like they could actually talk to the pilots and let them know what's up. Like, oh, look, we have a line of communication outside of what is expected. But they also never had to absolutely kill an entire plane of people now like they normally it's the guy that's one or two people dying and he's like, no, this far and no further, but they killed 230 they said there's 230 people on this plane. I don't think you can just like set the runway like 200 feet below. No, that can not happen. My understanding was that it is possible for a pilot on manual control to miss calculate the runway that does happen. So Todd for his bachelor party went to Mexico. And he was not a good flyer. No. And so he got a prescription to go there, and I hadn't flown in a good long while as well. And he might have helped me out as well. You're an elitist bad word. They called me for pointing something out. The headline is millions in. Boosts all this week. It's the greatest. It's the most abrupt end to the greatest welfare program. We've ever had in american history and every article i've seen about it quotes various people. You know here's a single mom or here's a construction dude or whatever it is and how often it is that they're going to lose their check this week. There's no mention at any point anywhere of all the people that have had jobs this whole time. Which is the majority of wild that lost their jobs. The vast majority of us got to keep our job or kept working by choice. And we're the ones paying all those bills you'd think they'd like wanna mention us at some point like what we think of it as if doesn't exist at all that the zip work it is as if it is if that constituency doesn't exist at all that is exactly right. The only group is the millions of people that have been getting the benefits. All this time. And there's plenty of data including commonsense to lead you to believe that there are some people. I don't know how many but there are some people that aren't working because they're getting government money. We'll show her. We've we've got some great emails from folks who've said look just simply. Did the math made much more sense to take benefits. And some of your work and side hustles for cash and the rest of it. You're you're economic beasts is you should be. You're doing what's right for you. If the government's got their hand out with the you know a big old gold coin take it. But that's that's an open and shut case everybody gets that that's not the millions and millions of people getting those benefits side story. Why america has eight point four million unemployed and ten million job openings. Ten million job openings. Eight point four million unemployed. There's a big mismatch at the moment between jobs available. And what workers want they said without recognizing or hitting upon the fact that there are a lot of people out there working jobs that they don't want maybe half of people working right now today working a job. They don't want so the idea that whether you want the job or not is that that big factor. I can understand why if you had a cool job before that you liked paid well. You don't want to go work at a restaurant now but the person that's working at the restaurant you ate last week. They probably don't want to be doing that job either. But it's the only job got to pay their bills. Well there's an alternative. Now the government will pay your bills. Your fellow taxpayer will pay your bills. Yes and then. I like this line from washington post some anticipate a surge in job seekers as the benefits. Dry up relight right. Yeah i saw the line. Some will be forced to seek work. Oh no no. Wasn't it like Smucker's jam that sponsored it, And they would show all the old ladies and old guys that turned 100. Now they could, You know, so many people are living to 100 that that segment could go on forever. But when he was doing it, not as many people are living that all interesting. You said that because I saw that segment over the weekend. And they were celebrating the birth of one year olds. What, and I said, I mean, there's nothing cuter than a one year old. But they don't have a lot in their life to talk about at this point. I always liked the stories like, uh, you know, Ida 100 from Boise. She lived on whiskey. You know, they tell you these great little like 10 bits of their life. She got to Iowa to covered wagon when she was a young girl. I think they were telling this little ticket that was so fascinating of 100, Your old life. You know the one year old pictures cute on this market, which are but not the same. Actually, even the news. That's why I have no clue what's going on. It could be readily apparent from anyone listening to this show. By the way, What t V shows do you guys watch these days? Is there a good one out there? Oh, I'm addicted to my £600 life. I can't stop watching the show. It's a reality show of people who weigh over £600 and they're trying to, you know, not die and lose weight. It's a major investment each episode like a couple hours long, but I can't stop watching the family thinks I'm crazy. They all come home and they see me in front of the TV watching this thing, but I can't stop watching it. I admitted that I had I was addicted that about two years ago, I couldn't stop watching it. And finally I said, I got to give this up. What's the What's the joy in watching Because you root for these people? You just want them to. You know, get their life. Back together. They have so many struggles, and you want them to lose the weight. It's something I started. How do they move around? Well, that's that's part of the interesting part of watching this thing is they can't get out of bed can walk around, and it's first person narration, so that's kind of interesting. We have to remember that the economy is the thing that is driving this and original sin of this pandemic was polarization and lies and that is leading people to get the vaccine. Tell me that it really is about explaining to people that science evolves explaining the people that challenges are part of the job and then these numbers are really challenging for him. You know it's interesting. i'm going to put up. Poll of just the independent voters. Because that's this is who's moving the only people that move down. Our polarized climate democrats. Don't move up or down. Republicans don't move up or down right. They just the color jersey. It's this small slice of independence. You can see his approval rating sitting at thirty six percent now in april. It was over fifty. And that's they're the maybe they're calling the competency voters they. Actually they react to what's happening. They're not happy. With how cove. It's going whether it's biden's fault or not. He's the guy that wheel. It's a nightmare number for the white house. I talked with republican. Strategist about this whole situation yesterday. And what that person said. Is that afghanistan that horror in a vacuum probably would not have significantly damaged. Biden's pull numbers the way we've seen them change over the last few months but the point of this particular strategist made is that. It's the totality of everything. That's happened since april. It's co- vid it's inflation. There's some evidence. Voters are concerned about the immigration system and it gives republicans an opening to argue. That things are spiraling out of control for the white house. Whether or not that's accurate. This number kind of tells you what you need to know. At least in terms of the way that this administration and this white house are communicating to the american people and to these persuadable independence. How exactly they're governing and their ability to shape circumstances rather than be shaped by them. You don't match biden's campaign was defined by this was speaking. Chaos trump was chaos. Yeah i'm not going to be chaos. We're going to be science focused. We're going to be this. And i wonder if it's if might say maybe. The expectations are too high that he could somehow govern a polarized environment. Well it wasn't going to stay where he was and independence. We've seen the last couple. Several administrations independence will come back to their general skeptical outlook. I don't think this is a panic number. It's not a good number. it's not what they want. They got a lot of time. You know things are going to change. And i think look what he's doing. It's important to your point right. He was elected in a very wide margin because he did represent a return to normalcy and dignity and directness and honesty in the presidency. That's that's what people want to.
