Since Jacob Klein's walkout the women of triangle had formed a secret strike committee with a handful of mail contractors years of indignities had piled up wages skimped long punishing ars emotional abuse from higher ups physical danger from the machines on the factory floors these were just a few of the grievances disgust over lunch breaks or at after work meetings acme Union Hall on Clinton Street to meet with local twenty five the first woman to arrive sat in chairs when the chairs were filled they stood or leaned against Pillar Excitement raced through the air the packed room looking around it was not hard to notice that most of those present were women like triangle factory floor where about seventy percent of the workers were female and now in Clinton Hall they had control or at least the illusion of it the Union reps listened nodded as women spoke up they agree to strike was necessary the optics of having women on the picket lines would help sway public opinion the reps urged the workers all of them to join the Union immediately but there was a problem local twenty five was broke the local would absolutely support to walk out but they couldn't sponsor it meanwhile blank and Harris were also trying to organize after Jacob Klein's walkout the year before the owners knew they had to do something about the rising temperature of their workforce so they formed a triangle employees Netherlands Association and in-house Union for the workers run by relatives of blank and Harris it was of course a force after the Clinton Hall meeting were got back to the triangle factory owners that workers had met with local twenty-five in secret and that was the final Straw on Friday September twenty fourth Max blank all work on the floor to make an announcement the noise of the sewing machine slowly died down when there was silence blank said he was very upset and disappointed with the workers you wanted a union and I gave you on he said so why are you now looking for another one the operators nearest him glanced surreptitiously at each other. There must be and triangle spies at Clinton Hall blank put his workers on notice telling them anyone found joining a competing union outside the triangle factory would find themselves out of work immediately the following Monday workers arrived at the corner of Washington place and Greenstreet only defined the factory doors shuddered blank and Harris had fired pro union employees preemptively and they were not allowed back into the building in the newspapers triangle ran ads seeking new employees the suddenly the unemployed triangle workers now found their hand forced they had wanted to strike they had planned to strike but would have preferred more time to Marshall what little resources they had they weren't going without a fight there was no other recourse the strike was on seeing trouble coming the triangle owners turn to Tammy Hall New York's Political Machine the Society of St. Tammany was originally formed during the revolutionary war to fight under sympathizers and took its name from the Delaware tribal chief Tamminen two centuries later Tammany claimed it stood for the common people but in reality this medical system primarily served to make business owners and politicians of New York City richer business owners with the right connections would ask award boss for help with new ventures corrupt Tammany leaders would then come to the rescue cash would end up in all the right pockets the theater of graft repeated itself year after year the bizarre Tamna code of ethics worked like this if a business help fund public project and skimmed little off the top that was honest graft if a city employees actually still all money from a city or Business Treasury that was dishonest graft despite its name Tammany Hall had no fixed location but it continued its native Eric in Motif by referring to district leaders say chimps and their headquarters as the wigwam in its first decade in the nineteen hundreds the wigwam was a flat fronted not on descript building located at Fourteenth Street between third and fourth avenues in incited sat the Grand Sadism fifty year old Charles Murphy better the new Mayor Charles Murphy was the man who got the mayor elected Murphy was a plain spoken man with endless curiosity he was unique among the Tammany ward bosses for his tendency to keep his mouth shut he preferred listening and had earned the moniker silent Charlie a war boss or politician or city millionaire found himself meeting with Charles Murphy would often be dumbfounded by how few words Murphy actually spoke when Murphy did speak everyone listened afternoon really two decades in Manhattan the Triangle Factory owners knew better than to go directly to Murphy instead they would send word to bosses lower down to the tammy food chase hoping they would bring the case to Murphy perhaps the owners would even go to the police station Max Blank and Isaac Harris had no illusions about their position a strike could be very bad for their online but the city of Manhattan had their back after all they were job creators this was just another case of honest graft maginness late September nineteen o nine on Manhattan's Lower East side you've just arrived at the offices of the Greater New York detective agency but offices might be a bit of a stretch we climb dark rickety stairs up three floors you've seen hundreds of these rank smelling ask Dr What's your next boxer muscle paid you in the ring and now it pays you out math is pretty simple get the job do the job get paid don't ask questions you enter into a surprisingly large room with a desk and grimy window secretary tends to a sickly looking potted plant to other tufts denies from around or sitting in the only two seats so you stand Max Sch Lansky nods you he starts in on his pitch gentlemen I heard you work for the Pinkerton yeah a little bit here and there did some job for the Baldwin's too I used to live in spokane spokane sounds fancy not especially now wouldn't call it a fancy place will good this isn't fancy work we're discussing this is strikebreaking plain and simple you boys and a few others will meet at a proposed time in a proposed place together you'll break up the picket line cut and dry sounds like it whereas the picket triangle factory girls wearing pretty sashes and trying to halt the wheels of honest in the city isn't that right boys the Thompson the chairs grunter sent you could do without the Karma Barker Spiel but then something strikes you these even strikers already ahead of you I know you wouldn't want to Besmirch your notions of chivalry by beating a woman will yeah you're right I don't well I've already thought of that Jimmy Betsy on your way in he gestures at what you thought was his secretary takes one extra second to take in what he means that's the is a prostitute flying her trade downtown just like yourself but in a different way if you don't water the plants they're not going to grow that's not a false statement betsy he turns back to you I figured the working girls could handle the working girls if you follow meaning do the job however you see fit but just worried about the men okay betsy and her crew to the rest on October fourth picket lines had formed outside of the ash building triangle workers would arrive early in the morning before the first bell to stand out front and canvas they held signs and exhorted passersby to take notice of the situation when the scabs the replacement were here's blank and Harris had hired to fill the empty spots on the production line arrived the triangle strikers would try to bring them on board this is a non union factory they would tell the scabs your rights not being protected the triangle strikers would plead with the scabs to join their cause to join the strike was a method that worked in theory if the SCABS could be turned at the picket line lines then production could be halted even just for a while but in practice the method rarely worked the replacement workers just keep their heads down and brush past the strikers and headed inside the building for them he was about a paycheck not politics but on this morning something was different as the scabs approached the front door of the ash building recorded by a battalion of bowery prostitutes tough and formidable the prostitutes attack the female strikers as the replacement workers duck inside the factory they toward the women's hair there was kicking and punching jabbing with hat pins Pim's kit tabs on the affair but eventually joined in to fight the male strikers then in came the Mercer Street police and just in time to break up the fight they arrested the strikers as the bowery thugs and streetwalkers slunk away when a young triangle worker named Ida Yanowitz asked why she was being arrested. The police accused her of assaulting scabs when another worker tried simply to find out what was going on she was recipe to and hauled off to the magistrates at Jefferson Market Court still day after day the strike wore on triangle workers hit the picket lines and shifts and that would come either a phalanx of hired strongman or swarm of Mercer Street police eager to lock up the strikers for if nothing else disturbing the peace the strikers were now living day to day with no wages they faced the threat of arrest and imprisonment putting their physical wellbeing on the line to all this with only the support from local twenty-five to make matters worse a few weeks later Joe Seinfeld was attacked on a street near the pickets beaten to a pulp by downtown gang leader Seinfeld required more than thirty stitches on his face alone the triangle owners had money political connection muscle on.

Haven't been many by this kind of margin of this place where Kentucky. Wow, I'm if there is a bigger one when I've been here, I'm gonna years, we've been this is your ten ten ten years. My god. So that means we plays your ten times. Yeah. I guess. So I think they would be right. And I know I know in our games have all been like games. And you know, so to do what we did. And I told him what I what they did is they did it defensively and rebounding. And then they shared the ball. That's when you have this kind of lopsided score if you play defense, but you don't share the ball or you don't play defense and in order to play defense and don't rebound, we kind of did everything. And that's that's the kind of game. We're looking for. It was kind of neat to see him be so unselfishly up by a big margin and guys are looking for teammates more than themselves. Yeah. It was good. That's this is good win for us. Yeah. I would have pension so in this guy's going to be playing with a lot of confidence right now. Yeah. I keep telling them this this. We got eleven games left. "At the half house date leading northwestern twenty four to seven the Wildcats trailed early seven nothing came back tied at seven seven buckeyes took the lead before the first quarter was over tacked on ten more in the second quarter twenty four seven lead here at halftime jerick. Pat, FitzGerald said at home coming off the field. Let's just. Eighteen points in the second half and win by one go to Pasadena, and that's sounds good. The Wildcats were down twenty four seven. If you remember in the fourth quarter to Notre Dame came back got within three before the Irish rebel to put the game away out of a similar situation. Really in this school. Well, I I did predict there's gonna be some deception there has to be some deception on offense some little bit of trick play here. And there to maybe get something. Fueled in your offense. I mean besides the seventy seven yard run. We've been you know, we haven't had a lot of time on the field. And this was huge that really changed the game. You only gave up three points. But unfortunately. You know when you get down on the red zone or near the red zone when you get down the opportunity, and then you throw an interception in the end zone that really hurts. You know, NATO obviously hurt cannot get up vertical. The maybe catch that ball. But those those are the plays that really defined the game so far restrict sack interception, and you know. You know, we we need more production on offense when it comes down to it. We need a lot more production out of our offense three hundred thirty eight yards of offense for the buckeyes here. The first half they have held a football nearly twenty one minutes to nine minutes for the Wildcats as you said it could be on pace on pace for more than eighty plays. More like ninety six plays in escape. Leading rusher in the game. His moten eighty yards. Just two carries Clayton Thorson eight of eighteen fifty eight yards. One interception. These but sacked twice Haskins. Eighteen twenty two to forty nine two touchdowns. One interception. He has not been sacked ran for a key first down or that the last drive, and they buckeyes have a twenty four seven lead here at the half north..

"And I think we'll cycle back except the rule changes do lend itself to more more a couple of reasons why the wildcat didn't continue to grow even though for a period of time people thought it was going to change football. The number one reason why it wasn't gonna change football because they couldn't change the rules because once a quarterback decided that he was going to either fake it to a running back. He became a runner. So he he forfeited all the luxuries of being a quarterback. So we knew. We're not going lower quarterback to get hit like that. So that's not going to build a change the game. So now, the things that we're seeing these are things if you have a good quarterback who can released a football very quick re defense is an you have to have a tied in you have to have guys can run speed sweeps. Smaller guys in space. They're being utilized more now. So now, these things are more apt to stick in continuing to see people growing also from the wildcat no-one develop very what I call comprehensive passing game off of that wildcat. So I want you took away the quarterback and his ability to build a flip it now how they going to tack from a passing standpoint that never developed. So we saw go away. But the other reason that I thought last night's game was so fun to watch was to Chris's point. It wasn't. It was a big twelve score. But some of the biggest place in this game were defensively. How I mean there were three defensive scores. There were six seven turnovers in the game. Like some of the best plays of the night. Were placed forced by the defense. One of the reasons the score was so high was because of those three defensive scores. And so it wasn't just use score score. You score score. There were some great defensive plays. The other part though that is leading to where we are today is while the wildcat couldn't catch on. I as a fan for a long time wonder, why for certain college teams can the option be so successful..

"Business at all i think what's really interesting here is that labour relations fundamental you're a question of who has more power freight and the right to work wave of kind of the the current one that we've seen over the last you know seven years since the wisconsin labor unrest of of 2011 has assumed that the only collective power that public sector unions have takes a wave from the public as a whole right like if they strike that's bad for kids who are going to need and not have school on days the teacher's strike if they get higher wages and higher pensions that's money that can't go into the rest of government or that's money that has to come out of taxpayers pockets the idea that individual workers can pick up and leave for individual states is something that has much more amenable to a market logic even if you don't recognize collective power a collective bargaining as legitimate it makes sense that an employee who could pick up and leave some els has the power to negotiate a better deal any business owner would tell you that but the teachers themselves don't see it as a matter of oh we should have particularly well qualified teachers get merit bonuses so that they don't have to leave they see it as we have a collective identity as a profession collective bargaining is extremely important to us and therefore when some of our teachers are being poached elsewhere that gives all of us the power to engage in collective action that might have been delegitimise and other circumstances and i think that's a really important thing to understand as this kind of raises questions of our union's bad keno know is this going to result in a rise of labour power or labor action across the country getting people to recognize the purposes in which collective action works and getting people who might not otherwise agree that it's very important for workers to be able to unionize and strike if possible and act collectively getting people to understand.
