New development in US, Russia uranium deal

"Pending between United States and Russia for some years now has been the importation into the U. S of Russian uranium is the subject of an ongoing anti dumping case. We welcome now the secretary of the U. S. Department commerce, He's Wilbur Ross with an important development. In the case of Mr Secretary. Thank you so much for being here. There's a development today. What is it? Well, the development is we have re negotiated with the Russians, atomic people. The energy contract for uranium coming into the US over the next 20 years. The original agreement, the old agreement had been scheduled to expire very shortly. So that no one replaces. That reduces annually the percentage of uranium that the Russians can supply to the U. S. And changes some technical features. So that now reprocessed two little uranium coming in accounts in the quota. So the net effect of this Will be to strengthen the US uranium producing industry and US uranium refining, but to do it in a very gradual way. It does not have any material impact on electric utility rates for those utilities that I use in uranium. So Mr Second give us a sense from two points of view. One is the industry in the United States that is uranium production industry what it does for them, but then also longer term strategically for the United States and its energy policy. What does it do for United States? Energy policy has several important components. One his national security, There's obviously a national security risk. To the degree that our electric power industry depends upon Russia as a source of throwing material. This is an even more direct national security risk, as our navy depends on foreign sources, such as Russia for the nuclear submarines that we have Going about in the ocean, so the way to deal with all that there's tohave, a healthier domestic industry. Do we have the wherewithal to supply the amounts of uranium? The other was we lost. That is say, I guess a different way of putting it is the price going to go up? You said it's going to be brought in gradually over time. But you expect this will actually support the price of uranium to the utilities. Well, what we're doing is reducing the Russian content from about 20% to about 17% directly, and then we're making the other technical changes. And that change occurs over a period of years. So you're talking a very small portion of the utilities, input and uranium. For nuclear power is only a small portion. They could throw around 20% of the total power so it will not be noticeable. Especially since there's such volatility in the prices of the other sources of power, namely oil, not true gas and coal. So this will get not noticeable to the consumer, but it would be very noticeable to the US producers. So I understand Mr Secretary. Why this would be helpful to us producers and I understand your point about strategic strategic significance for United States. What was in it for Russian? Put it directly. What did they get out of this deal? Well, what they get out of the deal was assurance of a stable relationship here for many years to come the alternative to this suspension agreement. Would have been for us to bring a 2 32 proceeding and potentially imposed tariffs, quotas or other remedial measures. So what it gives everybody on both sides is assurance about what are the rules of the game. How much material will come in from Russia? How much material will not come in from Russia? And therefore it should stabilize things, both from the U. S point of view and the Russian point of view. Let's turn from Russia.

Federal judges block Trump census order on undocumented immigrants

"In New York is blocking President Trump's ordered to exclude certain immigrants from the census count. The panel says the resulting damage would last for a decade. A memorandum released in July shows. The president ordered Comer Secretary Wilbur Ross to provide information needed to exclude unauthorized immigrants from the official head count. Census figures are used to determine the number of U. S House seats in each state and the allocation of federal money.

Census changes raise questions for states holding 2021 elections

"Judges in New York aggressively questioned the Trump Administration today about its plan to exclude undocumented immigrants from the final census tally used to determine congressional seats and much more. The lawsuit against the president's memorandum, which came out in July, was filed by New York state on behalf of more than 20 other states as well. A cities like Chicago and immigrant groups to NPR's Hansi Lo Wong covers the census and he listened to the virtual hearing. Nancy. Thank you so much for joining us this afternoon. Thank you for having me. Jamie, can you remind us first? What the president's July memorandum actually says it calls for an unprecedented change. Toothy apportionment count. This is the set of census numbers used to determine how many seats each state gets once every 10 years that redistribution of congressional seats. The Constitution. 14th amendment specifically calls for the whole number of persons in each state to be included in that count. Resident trumps memo that he put out in July calls for unauthorized immigrants to be excluded from that count, and it specifically directs the Commerce secretary, Wilbur Ross, who oversees a Census Bureau to come up with information to provide to the president. That would allow the president to carry out that policy. Well, that gives us a bit of a sense of what went on in court today, but drill down on it a bit. What did each side argue? And how did the judges react? It was a fairly speedy hearing. But the main issue here the judges were trying to figure out how quickly and when. Exactly, they have to rule on this that the clock is really ticking. And these plaintiffs are arguing that they need a ruling as soon as possible because they say that this memo is already hurting ongoing census efforts and the trouble administrations attorneys with the Justice Department. They're arguing that The judges don't have to rush and that any decision should really wait until the president receives any information from the commerce secretary. But another part of the equation here is that the 2020 census forms have you taken a look at them? There's no question about a person's immigration status, so the Census Bureau has been collecting information for this year's count. Without knowing. What a person's immigration status is so judges were really pushing hard on the Justice Department attorney to explain Does this promise you should have a plan? Justice Barman said. No. Nothing definitive yet. There was really tough questioning, and it sounded like based on the questions that the judges were really skeptical of the Trump Administration's arguments. Well

Trump Executive Orders Target TikTok, WeChat Apps

"President of the United States signed two executive orders Thursday under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act and a couple other justifications forbidding transactions with tiktok owner bite dance, and any transactions with ten cents related to their super. APP We chat. Each of these orders takes effect September twentieth. You might recall Microsoft has until September fifteenth to reach a deal to buy some or all of Tiktok from by dense. So there's a little bit of a gap there between win Microsoft's deadline is and when this executive order takes place. So that's the first thing to remember is they didn't ban the APPS they banned transactions with the companies which could cause apps to disappear and it doesn't happen until. September twentieth. So there's forty five days to figure out how this is going to work. Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross will identify which transactions will be considered prohibited under the order. So that's going to change a lot of people are looking at the tencent order and saying, well, wait could this band transactions with other ten cent industries and so that will be important for the the definition from Wilbur Ross to decide is it really just we chat? The use of the emergency act is generally applied to terrorism or sometimes international trade and will likely be challenged in court. In fact, tiktok is pretty much said it's going to do that. The order claims the APPS access to user data including location browsing messaging payments, and search histories. Quote threatens to allow the Chinese Communist Party access to America's personal and proprietary information potentially allowing China to track the locations of federal employees and contractors. States. So there's the justification they're going to have to find out in court. While, the order against we chat is likely to be narrow if it's not. It could affect ten cents non we chat businesses. In fact, some companies may just out of an abundance of caution decide to back off ten cents non we chat businesses just in case. Census to Halt Operations a Month Early Amid Growing Fears of a Population Undercount

"Bureau has confirmed it will wrap up its count a month early. It's a move that many fear could reduce the accuracy of the population. Tout NPR national correspondent has alone. Juan broke this story last week, and the bureau confirmed it last night in hand. The census happens as we know every 10 years. The end date was initially postponed until late October because of the pandemic. Now the bureau is saying that it will wrap up on September 30th. What reasons has the sense is given According to a statement, the Census Bureau director Stephen Dealing Ham posted on the sense sphere is website last night. The Commerce secretary Wilbur Ross, who oversees the Census Bureau, has directed the bureau to speed up counting to end it cut it short a month early in order to meet current legal deadline. There's a deadline set by federal fall, it says the Census Bureau via the Commerce secretary has to present to the president the latest state pop. Elation counts by December 31st of this year, and those are the numbers that are used to redistribute seats in Congress among the states, and that was a deadline The bureau had said in April that it could no longer meet because of the pandemic needed more time has asked Congress to give it more time by extending the deadline into 2021. Sir from Congress has not extend that deadline. Democrats have introduced legislation, but Republicans have not regarding those deadlines. And so the Commerce secretary apparently is saying it is time to make this change to make sure we can meet that deadline. Okay, let's break this down a little bit. NPR first reported that the agency had decided to cut short door knocking efforts. What is the impact, though of finishing early like this and what populations Could be most impacted by an undercount. One thing to keep in mind here is that you know, through all this back and forth career officials from the Census Bureau, including associate director for the 2020 cents is an associate director for field operations has publicly stated that the bureau as early as May, they've said, can no longer meet this federal deadline of December 31st And by rushing to do it at this point by not continue to count through October 30 1st there are concerns here that there would be great and accuracy and the data that are collected because we're at a point in the senses, with roughly four out of 10 households that have not yet responded to the senses, those four out of 10 whole household's roughly our representative of historically under counter groups who are Less likely to respond on the census around their own and are really probably only get counted if a door knocker gets to meet them and tries to essentially convinced them to do an in person interview outside their home for about five minutes, trying to collect that information and otherwise the bureau if it rides up, finding homes that are vacant or or seemed to be vacant or unresponsive here has to rely on government records and That way of rely on government records using statistical methods The bear has used before, but the bureau might have to use it at a much, much greater extent. And that could really hurt theocracy because those methods tend to over represent the white population while under representing people of color. Yeah, as we know, the Trump administration tried last year to get a citizenship question added to the census. The Supreme Court rejected that attempt. How does this week's news that the census will wrap up early fit into the bigger picture? I mean, the question everyone is asking is, Is this change? Politically motivated? You know, I've been covering the 2020 cents is all the lead up to it for three more than three years now, and it has been a Siri's Of attempts by the Trump administration to have a very direct hand and how the senses is carried out to be very clear. There is no citizenship question on the 2020 cents is, even though the Trump Administration tried very hard to get one onto the forms, and that on now, you know, just just recently Last Last month, President Trump released a presidential memo calling for unauthorized immigrants to be excluded. From the census numbers used to redistribute seats in Congress. Even though the Constitution says the counting of the whole number of persons in each state that's the that's how that's the people that should be counted nor determine how many states how many seats in Congress each state gets. So this latest move here a lot of Democrats a lot of sense its advocates, given what career officials have said about the need for more time or really questioning. Why is there this push to not extend counting and what happens with Congress? That's NPR's national correspondent. Hotsy Low long hands. Thank you so much for joining us. You're welcome, Tanya.

"States, saying it has revoked parts of Hongkong's special status. Under U. S law. Ed. It's all yours. "Pawn pay. Day, title loans, all of these things are varieties of the same thing. What Pont is is you're bringing in a product of value. So you're, you know, wedding ring, your laptop something like that. And they're giving you a loan and they're holding onto this piece of property as collateral. It's not about the the ring or the laptop. They don't really want to resell that that's just there in case you default. What the, you know, the business model of these of these lenders is the interest and fees that you're paying on the loan itself. So the pond broker is sort of taking something from you just in case you default that's same thing with title loan. So titled owns is the take the title to your car. So in the event that you don't pay back the loan and all the fees and interest. They're able to take your car over payday is you're there is nothing as collateral, but they can garnish wages and things like them. Let's talk about who's taking out these loans. I mean, we're talking about this, obviously, there was a spike during the government shutdown, and we did extensive reporting here on the show about how families were struggling to get by many. The American families are living paycheck to paycheck can't afford to take a couple of weeks without pay. But generally, speaking beyond what we see in the shutdown who is the target demographic. If any for this type of product, I mean, these are in to quote of politicians the average American this is not a there's not the destitute. You have to have a paycheck. You have to have an income to take out a payday loan. And so the Federal Reserve at the study about half of the American population, if they need it if they had a shortfall of about a thousand dollars, they would have to borrow to make ends meet. So if you need a thousand dollars, let's say if you're furloughed federal employee who doesn't have a ton of savings, which is the case for most Americans because we're just not making enough wages to meet our expenses. You would have to borrow that money because you're not getting paid. And so some of us can go to friends and family to borrow some of us can have some other means of getting that income, but but that's complicated on its own right, friends and family, there's other sort of calm. Complexities that come out one. There are and and I want to bring in one more voice here because we're talking about the complications of that. Let's take a listen to what our commerce secretary Wilbur Ross had to say about this issue of the credit union should be making credit available to them true. The people might have to pay a little bit of interest. But the idea that it's paycheck or zero is not a really valid idea. I wanna sort of break that down because that's the commerce secretary Wilbur Ross as telling people to take out loans for quote a little bit of interest. And that the idea of not having a paycheck. It's paycheck or nothing is not valid. Let's be realistic. How valid is that comment that is shocking level of ignorance of how banks and credit unions work. I mean, banks and credit unions haven't been able to give consumers or haven't been interested in giving consumer loans since the nineteen hundred it is impossible to walk into your Bank and.

There's going to be more yacking about all of this the yacking that I think gathered. Deserved amount of attention. This past week was when Wilbur Ross US commerce secretary secretary of commerce, and a multimillionaire industrialist was asked what was his opinion about federal workers who during the shutdown were being forced to two times resort to food banks and other ways of supporting them selves and their families. A no they are in. I don't really quite understand why because as I mentioned before the obligations that they would undertake Sayeh borrowing from the Bank or credit union are in effect. Federally guaranteed. So the thirty days of pay that some people will be out. There's no real reason why they shouldn't be able to get a loan against it. There was a lot of criticism of Wilbur Ross for saying that. But maybe he had a good reason. Are you a federal employee hurt by the government shutdown? Have you endured the humiliation visiting food Bank? But being threatened with eviction. Well, he's good news. Hi, I'm Wilbur Ross. And I quote, we're aware painfully aware that there are hardships inflicted on the individual workers. Now, according to the TSA salary for screeners can range from twenty three to thirty five thousand dollars, which means that seven hundred million dollars net worth Wilbur Ross has enough money to live on screeners top salary for about twenty thousand years. What if government workers can't get alone? Loan already living on the edge. As many are what happens when the bills come due. Well, President Trump had an answer for that today. Does your presidency Wilbur Ross said that he didn't understand what pedaled workers need help getting food? You can you understand the habit? I haven't heard the statement. But I do understand perhaps you should have said it differently. Local people know who they are where they go for groceries and everything else. And I think what will always probably trying to say is that they will work along, I know banks of working along if you have mortgages, the Borghese the mortgage the folks collecting the interest and all of those things they work alone. And that's what happens in dime like this. They know the people they've been dealing with them for years, and they work along the grocery store, and I think that's probably what Wilbur Ross. Wilbur Ross was watching the Andy Griffith show and Barney fife didn't have work, and he went to the grocery store and everybody knows Barney five, and they all know him the local banks, of course, they gave him a mortgage. They give him alone. They gave them free grocery stores. That's what happens it's kind of like a friendly landlord. The president has talked about on other occasions. Always ready to give you more time to pay. Just like he always did when he was a landlord perhaps you should tell that to Ali Morgan field who still going to work is still not getting paid and still forced to worry as he keeps us all safe. How it might feel when he gets a victim more now and all of this and what the president is doing about it or not doing about. It was seen as Caitlyn Collins who joins us now from the White House. So you've got some new reporting on the likelihood of the president declaring a national emergency. What what is the latest? Yeah. Anderson CNN has SC. Lucidly attained this document that shows the White House has prepared a draft for the president to declare a national emergency to build his border wall into funded. If congress doesn't give him the funding now White House officials say that this is still. An option for them. But right now, it's not their top option. But clearly Anderson the fact that this draft exists and has been edited as recently in recent days shows that White House officials still think it's a real possibility that the president could bypass congress and use this national emergency to build his border wall. And the president alluded to that today when reporters were in the room when him with him when he was asked like about Wilbur Ross's comments. He also said that it this doesn't work out with Democrats that he will pursue other options to build his border wall. The president never. Here's negative comments that his own people are making that are widely covered. But he seems to hear just about everything else. That's going on in the universe on television. Do the president. And his advisors seem concerned that six Republicans supported the Democrats plans today and the Senate and did they think they're new pro rated down payment proposal is actually viable well right now. "This billionaire named people teeter so called billionaire is in a a lot of hot water right now with his company, and it just seems like there's this kind of devil-may-care attitude among some of the men who surround themselves. Let's talk about one of those men commerce secretary Wilbur Ross, and Scott Pruitt gone Ross is arguably the most scandal prone cabinet member left, but his scandals have been a lot less hilarious and more complicated than Scott Pruitt's cylinder. I'm going to count on you to make this interesting. And concise as possible. The main scandal seems to be that we learned three leak of offshore banking records that Wilbur Ross continued well into his tenure as commerce, secretary to own steaks and a variety of global businesses that were directly affected by the policies. He was making. He owned a stake in navigator holdings, which is a Russian shipping company linked to allies of Latimer Putin. And then there are other assets that he technically doesn't own any more, but they're in a trust that benefits is relative. So you know, he's still retains an economic interest in them. That includes a major manufacturer of auto parts that's going to be heavily impacted by the decisions that Trump makes about auto and auto-parts tariffs which will be recommended by Wilbur Ross. Linda, I feel like when when Ross was confirmed didn't didn't. He make this big show about how he was divest his financial assets that he can do his job without exactly these sorts of conflicts that we've now learned has. It was a love fest. There were democratic senators who are, you know, congratulating him on being so open and honest. And I think that one of the actual scandals that got lost this week was at two days ago, broths set. Pulled a a lawsuit from one of his ex partners and that he settled because a judge was about to rule that he might have to produce documents about his the financial documents that he handed to the Senate. He did not include this lawsuit in his in his disclosures to the US government. So there's something about his issues with this partner. This nine million dollar lawsuit that was settled for an undisclosed amount that really made Ross nervous. He did not want to appear in court. He did not want to have those documents Cepeda and we know that he's a liar. He has been lying about his wealth to Forbes magazine for as long as there's been a billionaire list. We figured that out when people were like, hey, you said you're only about where two hundred and fifty million dollars in these documents to the government. Are you lying to the government and or Forbes magazine? And he said, whoops, I'm lying to Forbes. He has this amazing Mr. Magoo. "And I have to say being familiar with Wilbur Ross's business and his business history. I have been waiting since he was nominated to be the secretary of commerce for the dam to break on the multiple very swampy involvements and business history of Wilbur Ross. And you seem to have done it with these interviews and the pattern of business he engaged in before becoming secretary and what he's done since becoming secretary. Yeah, you know, there's a lot of rich guys who get sued for various things, but not like this, not by so many former partners by so many investors to have such consistent allegations and to have it all add up to such a significant amount of money. I mean, one hundred twenty three million dollars is a huge sum for anyone including Wilbur Ross, and Dan just take us through what he was supposed to do in terms of what he. He said he would do with his finances when becoming a commerce secretary and what he actually didn't do. Sure. So like all public officials, Wilbur Ross made agreements before he took office that he would divest the majority of his holdings and in November of last year, he certified that he in fact had done that on a sworn statement when in fact, he had not done that. And instead he's still own more than ten million dollars of stock in the parent company of his former private equity fund company called. Invesco that he didn't sell until about a month and a half after that. And he'll still held stock in an air leasing company that he held onto for more than a year after he was supposed to and he'd shorted a company that he said that he thought that he had an interest in. So he was taking a short to cancel out that interest. But in fact, he didn't have an interest in the short wasn't necessary. All of this stuff he said was a result of simple mistakes, but it's hard to believe that one of the most sophisticated investors in the country would make so many large mistakes at so many different companies, Tim O'Brien, how could this have gone wrong for Donald Trump? He told his audience, you don't want four people doing this kind of work. You want rich guys doing this kind of work. You want rich guys in congress who can't be corrupted like Chris Collins, you want rich guys in the cabinet like Wilbur Ross, right Lawrence. And so what we've learned is that Trump did not drain the swamp. He just filled it with bigger alligators and Dan's great. Reporting, which I admire so much as really exposed just around the fact pattern. Everything that's untored about real Barastas holdings. Wally serving as the commerce secretary, and there's been a lot of really great reporting in addition to dance around this, and the list is almost so long. It would be impossible to get through it in this program in addition to the stuff that Dan is already pointed out. Ross was negotiating trade agreements with China during a time when he owned a company that was exporting natural gas to China. He had another a shipping company that was doing business in China and was partially owned by the Chinese government while he's overseeing trade policy with China. He has another company exporting steel from South Korea at the same time that the Trump administration is imposing steel tariffs on some of our competitors, but giving South Korean exemption. All of this stuff is it just smells and it's amazing. It's taken this long for it to come to a head. Dan, how long have you been working on the Wilbur Ross story? Well, there have been many Wilbur Ross stories, but I, I started covering him about a year ago when we were looking to see how much money he was worth. And that was when we uncovered that. Although he'd been claiming to us for years that he had billions of dollars. He in fact, did not. And once you figured that out. Then sort of all this other stuff. So I run Raveling and there's one investor told me. I said, once you figure out that the guy is essentially for lack of a better word of fraud, you figure out that anything that he says really isn't quite correct. Tim O'Brien quickly take us inside the head of Donald Trump tonight. He's watching Chris Collins charged with these crimes along with his son. Soy beans, the big deal, and the European Union is going to start almost immediately to buy a lot of soybeans, tremendous market by a lot of soybeans from our farmers in the midwest primarily. So I thank you for that. John slowed. This will open markets for farmers and workers increase investment and lead to greater prosperity in both the United States and the European Union. It will also make trade fairer and more reciprocal. My favorite word reciprocal. Reciprocal because you know what's happening here. And by the way, he's emphasizing the soybeans because the farmers are really suffering because the Chinese are striking back against the tariffs that we've that Trump imposed on them. The Chinese are striking back against the farmers and the Chinese. They're no dummies. They know where his supporters are and they're going after his supporters. But what's happening here is after World War Two. I mean, that's how far back this is going after World War Two. The world was in ruins except for us. The repeal in Union Japan ashes gone, right. And so when you talk about the fifties and how prosperous we were one of the reasons we were so prosperous here. Elizabeth Warren heard her saying the other day we used to have these high taxes and that was our most prosperous time. Yep, because all the competition had been leveled to dust. I mean, when I say that, I mean literally to dust their civilizations were gone, and so you're not competing with Germany because journey an ashes, you're not competing with Britain because they're putting themselves back. The other way we went. And made them brought them back. We wanted a world that was a working world went back and rebuilt. Japan. We rebuild Germany, we and we did it partially with the lent lonely things where we gave them the Marshall plan where we helped them out. But the other thing we did was we gave them big breaks on trade and they're still in place. An all Trump is doing saying, you know what? World War Two is kind of over. You know, it's like it's been a while. It's been a couple of days since World War Two ended. It's time to reduce the stuff. So yesterday, Bret Baier had Wilbur Ross, the commerce secretary. He's obviously the guy in charge of this on and he explained why this deal, even though it's just an agreement to talk, it isn't agreement to get to a certain place. And Wilbur Ross explains why this is a big deal. This is the first one to cut one. I think there's several very significant aspects though. No preconditions to the negotiations, no requirement that we drop any of the two thirty. Two tariffs just to get talks. To going as you know that had been an original, he you request that came very prepared to do business. We came prepared to do business, and I think this really breaks the ground because it has Nell set the parameters. Everything is on the table here I'm talking zero tariffs, possibly right. President made clear at the g seven. Although as you remember, nobody paid any attention that his endgame is zero tariffs, zero non-trade, non-tariff trade barriers, zero subsidies, and zero barriers to our market access. So for big zeros that so that's that's a big deal. You know, that's that's what they're winnings. When you come to the table without conditions, he come to the table looking for these zero tariffs and and Ross points out there that this is what Trump said. He said, this is the deal I want. And when they cover Trump, they do not pay attention to this and we'll. Get into this incredible conflict that Mike Pompeo had with the Senate yesterday, just just saying to them, you, you keep paying attention to Trump things Trump says in the midst of negotiation, but you're not paying attention to where he wants to go and what the policies reflect what they say and their senators. Keep saying we'll play some of those. It's amazing audio. The senators can say, well, he said this and he's this pump keep saying, Yup. And his policies say this. I just wanna play one more cutter. Wilbur Ross. I know it's a little bit in the deep weeds, but I did ask this question yesterday. Why when Trump says I am buying time with, for instance, bailing out the farmers. I said, well, why doesn't China just say, oh, well, we can outweigh wait him. We can outweighed him..

Welcome to the news, hour, I wanna ask you about some of your latest reporting you look specifically at secretary Ross's calendar specifically the time between February and November of twenty seventeen those first few months in office what, about that time raised red flags for you Well we started looking through it immediately. You can see there dozens of, meetings with companies in which. Secretary Ross had financial interests or ties to the company there are also meetings with foreign, leaders that have oversight over businesses that he owned at the time and they're also. Meetings with sovereign wealth? Funds that had previously pumped millions of dollars into, secretary Ross's private equity funds so let's look specifically at one day. For example may eighteen twenty seventeen detail in your reporting, it's a busy day for, the secretary he has meetings with foreign officials, a trade hearing some calls there's one. Lunch. That you hone in on one that lasts longer than any other meeting and it's a lunch with the CEO of. A rail, car manufacturer called Greenbrier companies, why is that significant so shocking. When we saw it on the calendar you can see. It's listed as lunch with Wendy and dole Furman and if you look and see who Bill Furman is you can see that. He's as you said to see of Greenbrier companies And Wendy appears to be Wilbur Ross secretary, of staff so it looks like there are three people in this meeting once the CEO of Greenbrier ones Wilbur Ross. And the third is appears to be, Wendy Teramoto, now at the time Wilbur Ross had a. Secret interest in Greenbrier which she had. Never disclosed ethics officials and he, had that interest while he. Was having this meeting in addition Wendy Teramoto also had a financial interest in Greenbrier so, you've got three people at the meeting to have undisclosed to the public interest in. The company that the? Third person is running what they discussed about is, going to be a question that a lot of people are wondering. The Commerce Department says it was all friendly but it's, hard to imagine that they, didn't get into any business topics at all And also as part of your reporting you mentioned in there you found out. Greenbrier had been lobbying for renegotiation of NAFTA, and then we saw action from secretary Ross's office that same day is that right Yeah the meeting starts at twelve noon and at eleven fifty nine AM secretary Ross puts out a statement. That he's going to be renegotiating NAFTA on behalf of. Donald Trump and as you said Greenbrier have been actively lobbying other. Parts of the federal government to make changes to NAFTA at that point for. Months so he didn't disclose? The interest in that one company he, did disclose however interest. He held in a private equity fund one who single biggest, investment is actually a company that builds ships in China what's the. Ethical conflict there So this is a company you're referring to is called nautical bulk holding this is another one actually that he did not divest. Originally he just excuse me did not disclose originally just disclosed that he had. The fun but you have to disclose all of. The underlying holdings of the fund, and that that biggest interest as you, said, was to make ships in China and at the time Wilbur Ross is one of Donald Trump's lead lieutenants in what is now the ongoing trade. War, between the United States in China's you've got a guy. Who's financial interests are positioned to benefit from trade in China at the same time that he's negotiating over trade. In China day let, me ask you this because we asked secretary Ross is office for comment they pointed us back to that July twelfth. Letter we cited in the introduction here they basically cited. A part that said look although this is the office of government. Ethics to his office that his actions could have run him a foul of. Criminal conflict of interest law But that they found a review of the calendars his briefing. Books and correspondent that he wasn't in any such violation of that law they. Also pointed us to a part of their department..

"But now thanks to the paradise papers reporting we've learned that wilbur ross's financial ties to russian oligarchs aren't only through sipri it banks and they're not only things in his past wilbur ross was actually praised by some ethics watchdogs when he announced that he would be divesting himself from dozens of business partnerships and investments so as to avoid conflicts of interest in his new role as commerce secretary since nn though it's emerge that wilbur ross maintained billion literally billions of dollars in assets that he never disclosed to anybody when he was being confirmed for commerce secretary and it's now been disclosed that among the holdings he chose to retain even as he dropped all the other ones among the holdings he chose to retain when he joined the cabinet was a significant interest in a firm called navigator and the way navigator makes money is because it has exclusive business deals with russian oligarch linked to vladimir putin who was one of the first russian businessmen to be sanctioned by the us after russia invaded ukraine also another russian oligarch linked to putin who runs russia's largest private natural gas company which has also been sanctioned by the us because of its links to putin and putin's invasion of ukraine and the other notable shareholder in that firm that that that right this second as we speak continues to enrich our serving secretary of commerce the other notable shareholder in that firm is this handsome fellow his name is curiel shalvalov his vladimir putin's soninlaw.
