Jared Kushner on What It Was Like Working on Trump's Trade Policy

"We didn't work directly. However, I was placed on the trade policy council as an observer, and I watched you co chair it with Gary Cohen. And what was it? Every Tuesday morning, is that right? I remembering right? And I saw, I watched you there. I didn't throw my money in my voice into often, except when it was about China. But what I saw was a young, very intelligent man trying to make his father in law's administration and the America first vision a success. From the outside, you'd hear all these stories about, oh my gosh, there are subversives and camps and it's Steve versus Jared. Will you tell us the truth about what it was like inside The White House and how the misconceptions lasted this very day? So first of all, it was one of the most wild experiences you could ever have, especially in those early days. I think that when president Trump ran for office in 2016, there was an article in The New York Times, which I've now come to understand what that actually is worth, but it basically talked about how his trade policies were upending a hundred years of orthodoxy in terms of trade thinking. And when we got into power, it was one thing to say what president Trump said on the campaign, which is we need to stop our manufacturing jobs from going overseas. I want to see car plans starting to be built here in America, not in Mexico. I don't want to be hostage to China for all the different things that we are. And what he had as a people with a different set of experience. So we had on one end, Peter Navarro and on one end, Gary Cohn, and then we had in the middle. We had Wilbur Ross. We had bob lighthizer. We had myself and Steve Bannon. We were more trying to get the agreements, get people to come together to figure out what is a cohesive trade policy for an America first agenda looks like. And ultimately, bob lighthizer ended up emerging as the tip of the spear took him a while to get confirmed, I think Congress was very nervous that he actually was going to be able to do the things that Trump wanted to do. But once he took leadership of that, he really became a mentor of mine and somebody who really taught me a lot about not only why Trump's trade policy and instincts were correct, but also how do you implement them?

China Sanctions Wilbur Ross and Others, Responding to Hong Kong Warnings

"Fresh sanctions on a handful of US individuals. It's retaliation for sanctions the bite and administration imposed on Chinese officials last week. Over Beijing's crackdown on democracy in Hong Kong. Its latest attack comes just days before a visit to China by Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman and US China ties are already tense, though, as NPR's John Ruit reports there is no sign China's sanctions will derail the visit. Sanctions are the first imposed by China under a new law passed in June, which facilitates retaliation for foreign sanctions. Among those it hits a former Commerce secretary Wilbur Ross, and the China director at Human Rights Watch Sophie Richardson. For years, Beijing's responded to US sanctions and tariffs with tit for tat measures in Beijing's calculation, it had to respond to the US Bonnie Lynn, a senior fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, says doing so before Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman's trip makes sense would disappear better if it happened a couple days after Deputy Secretary Sherman's trip that she says might risk being interpreted as a signal that the meeting didn't go well. And Sherman will be the most senior U. S official to travel to China since President Biden took office. Relations are at their worst in decades. But there's speculation that the trip could start to lay the groundwork for a meeting sometime this year between Biden and Chinese leader Xi Jinping. There is a desire to be able to showcase that the two world leaders can work together and part of that is being able to meet and discuss issues they agree on as well as those where they have differences, and I really hope As we see more of these incidents is on either side that they won't derail progress towards the usual meeting because both sides, she says, have significant incentives for Biden and she to meet sooner rather than later. "Another. Close trump associate arrested and charged with crimes of corruption. And his name is tom. Barrack is a billionaire businessman. He is accused of illegally lobbying. Donald trump on behalf of the united arab emirates prosecutors in the eastern district york today. Unsealing a huge seven count. Forty six page. Indictment go through it. We've got a reporter. Who's reporting on this. But this is a very important development a bunch of reasons not the least of which because when we last met here at this desk last night we were talking about the fate of the rule of law in the air of donald trump and particularly in the period where the justice department changed hands from attorney general in bar and then the final days of the trump administration. The lackey jeff rosen to joe. Biden's new attorney. General merrick garland last night. Here on this program. We were critical of the fact that justice department had according to reporting declined to prosecute trump's secretary of commerce wilbur. Ross that was according to reporting from both the associated press and government executive. Now that decision not to prosecute a came after the commerce department's own inspector general found at loss had lied to congress about a citizenship question that he wanted to add to the twenty twenty cents. We have an important update to that story. The government executive have both issued corrections. Clarifying that in fact it was the trump justice department that made the decision not to prosecute. Numbers shape representation in Congress and the Electoral College for the next 10 years. The Commerce Department, which oversees the senses, has turned over some documents. But Democrats on the committee say many are heavily redacted and the files do not include two documents that were already leaked to the committee. "President Trump doubles down on his attempt to hold on to a White House voters have denied him thus far push for stimulus is the nation heads into a long, dark winter and reaching for the stars, or at least the planets with all the benefits both spiritually commercial that it could bring From New York. Welcome to second hour Bloomberg balance of power I'm David Western Space. The final frontier, including for commerce, as we've watched the Space X program successfully launched satellites and now austra astronauts into space. What does the future hold for the privatization of space? And how might we make some money off of it? Still with us for the first hour of balance of Powers Colonel and astronaut Chris Hadfield, he is retired from the Royal Canadian Air Force. So, Colonel, Thank you so much for staying with us. Let's talk about this. And particularly on the Trump administration. We heard repeatedly, particularly Wilbur Ross to secretary commerce. How really The privatization of space is the future. People could really make money That could be commercial projects out there. Do you share that view? Absolutely. If you look back into history with aviation, the government spent a fortune in the teens in the 19 twenties building huge wind funnels testing airplanes trying to do all the research that would provide safe, reliable, efficient. Cost effective airplanes and you know what happened Since then. I mean air travel up until Cove. It became completely normal, and that's sort of the history What's happening in space flight? The recent technological advances have dropped the cost of access to space by a factor of 10 or 15, and it's continued to go on its way down. And naturally when you when you cut the cost of transportation by Tanner or 20 times that opens up whole new business opportunities. So yeah, it's pretty exciting time. Give us an example or two. If you could, Colonel of what those business opportunities are. If I'm a company or I'm investor, why do I want to go into space? Well, you and I are talking to each other, not in the same room, the technology that allows people to communicate all around the world. I mean, right now I'm a starling Beta tester. I have a little tiny dish about the size of peace in front of my house, and it's providing the high speed Internet from satellites going around the world. I know you don't need to put in fiber. You don't have to start me in Canada's been struggling with enough to spend the billions of dollars to put all the wires everywhere. You can provide things through space. If you look at our ability to understand the planet from weather forecasting or responding to wild fires or detecting methane leaks, or Monitoring. We photograph the entire world twice a day, all of the all of the dirt of the world twice a day through commercial ventures like like Planet Labs. And all of that is because of cheaper access. Simpler, more reliable access to space. Just open open, you know, it's kind of just limited by our imagination of how to use the new high ground. And in the past, as you know, better than I am sure, Colonel. There've been some offshoots from space programs and some things that we got out of our U. S space program were quite extraordinary. I mean, the Wall Street Journal's written a piece in which they say, you know the first A computer chips test by M. I t actually before for the space program that cost $1000 each and then he went down to $15. In short order. We have things like Velcro and all sorts of stuff that just were invented in order to get to kids Space. Well, yeah, of course. When you inspire people and you educate people, and then you give them and seemingly impossible challenge Then you're going to get new inventions. And in fact, if you look at England must he's a classic example. He was inspired as a kid by space flight when he came from South Africa went to school in Canada but then came to California because you realize that's going to give him the greatest opportunity and look at all the billions of dollars that he has contributed to the U. S economy. Because of his fundamental inspiration. You know, he would. He would have gone somewhere else, Or he would have done something else if he didn't have that, But you're right. There are also just direct spinoff. One of the great weight saving programs in the sixties and seventies. T optimize strength to weight like it's called mastery in to make cars safer and more crumple, worthy in structure, stronger that you know that That's not a really popularly known one. But it had a huge financial impact, and it was a direct result of the space program. So you know there's both the direct financial side. But there's also the impact that it has on people and their their vision of what they could do themselves and what they could do together. You mentioned the inspirational part of this. I mean, of course, President Kennedy famously said We were going to the moon. By the end of the sixties and delivered after him. They delivered on exactly that promise. Give us a sense of what the significance is for United States but for the globe of aspiring to go, for example to Mars, which isn't something that President Trump has said, is one of his aspirations. Yeah. Don't you think the world could use a little inspiration right now? And to recognize that you could look up and watch the space station Go over any kid in the world? Any kid anywhere in the U. S can you can just see if you get up in the morning or just before dusk when the space station still in the light, and it's getting dark here on the surface, you can watch this human creation go over your head, a visible example of what we could do together. And we do things right. And we have to put you know we can't just be screaming coded in politics that are at our kids. We have to show them. Hey, the future still there, and there are huge opportunities and we've just discovered basically unlimited quantities of water on the moon. Hundreds of millions of gallons hundreds of billions of gallons of water on the moon. And an eternal solar power poles. If you got power and water, then you know, it just opens up a tremendous Almost unbelievable opportunities, and it's just up to us to do it. So finally, Colonel, you say we make it more used to go to space, but most of us are not gonna make their you've made it there. Do you remember how it changed you the first time you went up. Actually, I know I decided to be an astronaut when Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walked on the moon. I worked on it for 26 years. And finally, that day came almost exactly 25 years ago watching Atlanta start of Florida. It's a huge amount of work a lifetime of work. It's extremely dangerous. The odds of dying where 1 38 that day. It was also the most magnificent human experience. I could possibly imagine climb into a human invention and in under nine minutes under the time it takes you to drink a cup of coffee. It has taken you from the surface of the world. So that's now you're floating, weightless going around the world every 90 minutes. Miles a second. It's fantastic. I can't do it. If you get a chance, David, you'll love it unimaginable. It's really great to hear about it from use for sure. That's astronaut.

New development in US, Russia uranium deal

"Pending between United States and Russia for some years now has been the importation into the U. S of Russian uranium is the subject of an ongoing anti dumping case. We welcome now the secretary of the U. S. Department commerce, He's Wilbur Ross with an important development. In the case of Mr Secretary. Thank you so much for being here. There's a development today. What is it? Well, the development is we have re negotiated with the Russians, atomic people. The energy contract for uranium coming into the US over the next 20 years. The original agreement, the old agreement had been scheduled to expire very shortly. So that no one replaces. That reduces annually the percentage of uranium that the Russians can supply to the U. S. And changes some technical features. So that now reprocessed two little uranium coming in accounts in the quota. So the net effect of this Will be to strengthen the US uranium producing industry and US uranium refining, but to do it in a very gradual way. It does not have any material impact on electric utility rates for those utilities that I use in uranium. So Mr Second give us a sense from two points of view. One is the industry in the United States that is uranium production industry what it does for them, but then also longer term strategically for the United States and its energy policy. What does it do for United States? Energy policy has several important components. One his national security, There's obviously a national security risk. To the degree that our electric power industry depends upon Russia as a source of throwing material. This is an even more direct national security risk, as our navy depends on foreign sources, such as Russia for the nuclear submarines that we have Going about in the ocean, so the way to deal with all that there's tohave, a healthier domestic industry. Do we have the wherewithal to supply the amounts of uranium? The other was we lost. That is say, I guess a different way of putting it is the price going to go up? You said it's going to be brought in gradually over time. But you expect this will actually support the price of uranium to the utilities. Well, what we're doing is reducing the Russian content from about 20% to about 17% directly, and then we're making the other technical changes. And that change occurs over a period of years. So you're talking a very small portion of the utilities, input and uranium. For nuclear power is only a small portion. They could throw around 20% of the total power so it will not be noticeable. Especially since there's such volatility in the prices of the other sources of power, namely oil, not true gas and coal. So this will get not noticeable to the consumer, but it would be very noticeable to the US producers. So I understand Mr Secretary. Why this would be helpful to us producers and I understand your point about strategic strategic significance for United States. What was in it for Russian? Put it directly. What did they get out of this deal? Well, what they get out of the deal was assurance of a stable relationship here for many years to come the alternative to this suspension agreement. Would have been for us to bring a 2 32 proceeding and potentially imposed tariffs, quotas or other remedial measures. So what it gives everybody on both sides is assurance about what are the rules of the game. How much material will come in from Russia? How much material will not come in from Russia? And therefore it should stabilize things, both from the U. S point of view and the Russian point of view. Let's turn from Russia.

"President of the United States signed two executive orders Thursday under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act and a couple other justifications forbidding transactions with tiktok owner bite dance, , and any transactions with ten cents related to their super. . APP We chat. . Each of these orders takes effect September twentieth. . You might recall Microsoft has until September fifteenth to reach a deal to buy some or all of Tiktok from by dense. . So there's a little bit of a gap there between win Microsoft's deadline is and when this executive order takes place. . So that's the first thing to remember is they didn't ban the APPS they banned transactions with the companies which could cause apps to disappear and it doesn't happen until. . September twentieth. . So there's forty five days to figure out how this is going to work. . Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross will identify which transactions will be considered prohibited under the order. . So that's going to change a lot of people are looking at the tencent order and saying, , well, , wait could this band transactions with other ten cent industries and so that will be important for the the definition from Wilbur Ross to decide is it really just we chat? ? The use of the emergency act is generally applied to terrorism or sometimes international trade and will likely be challenged in court. . In fact, tiktok , is pretty much said it's going to do that. . The order claims the APPS access to user data including location browsing messaging payments, , and search histories. . Quote threatens to allow the Chinese Communist Party access to America's personal and proprietary information potentially allowing China to track the locations of federal employees and contractors. . Bill dossiers a personal information for blackmail and conduct. . `corporate espionage. . This is considered in both cases, , a threat to national security foreign policy and the economy of the United. States. . . So there's the justification they're going to have to find out in court. . While, , the order against we chat is likely to be narrow if it's not. . It could affect ten cents non we chat businesses. . In fact, , some companies may just out of an abundance of caution decide to back off ten cents non we chat businesses just in case. . "Timeliness to meet the applicant's requirements so there's a lot of give and take and that's the variable in the time equation for when objections are raised when there are objections in the case of steel we have granted the exclusion it is eighteen point eight percent of the cases and in the case of aluminum despite objection we have granted the exclusion twenty one percent of the cases so more or less twenty percent of the time when there have been objections it's proven that they were not well founded and therefore we granted the exclusion requests and any of that I did not recognize her she's Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire is the ranking Democrat on the Senate appropriations subcommittee this took place March fifth commerce secretary Wilbur Ross is the witness Mr chairman it and Mr secretary I appreciate the effort that the department has to try and improve the exclusion process but I just have to point out that there are a number of small business folks in New Hampshire who we've heard from who while the percentages may sound good still are affected by the process one of those is a company and Amherst New Hampshire called walking paths it's a thirty five percent pet supply company their signature product is a dog wheelchair that has been produced for them in China and so they're subject to tariffs the company believes that's mistakes so they hired a lawyer to help with the exclusion process the company's been unable to get an exclusion because the tariff schedule is misclassified and they're just trying to stay afloat so while I understand that the the numbers may look better the fact is we have too many small businesses that are struggling because of these tariffs and when I ask ambassador Lighthizer a year and a half ago what the administration was thinking about to help the small businesses in the same way that they're helping farmers the answer was zero you know there isn't anything that's being done to help them so I would just urge you to let us know if there's more for more resources that are needed but we've got to help the small businesses especially as we're looking at some of the struggles around the corona virus for businesses to be able to stay afloat I am certainly a supporter of small businesses it happens though that the three oh one tariffs are the domain of the U. S. T. are not of the department of commerce so I think your discussions with ambassador Lighthizer a really the right ones have it we we are not the ones who can grant exclusions under section three oh one well hopefully you won't weigh in with ambassador Lighthizer about the needs that are small businesses will be very happy to Kerry informally to the ambassadorial your comments thank you as I said in my opening statement I was really disappointed to see again the budget proposes to eliminate the economic development administration it's the principal office within the department of commerce that supports communities that are hurting from trade related pressures and at a time when communities and small businesses are facing the challenges it would be helpful to continue to support those efforts that can make a difference for them and one of the it's also inconsistent with a recent tweet that you issued supporting the economic development administration and we have we have a copy of that here where you said that the trump administration continues to work diligently to rebuild communities devastated by natural resource disasters by providing small business with gap financing to recover.

S. over to China and of course I I mentioned just a short time ago that the American Airlines pilots union they're suing the airline now that the pilots want to stop all flights so the pilots American Airlines pilots don't wanna fly to and from China right now what do you think I think the president ought to issue an order right now shutting down air travel because I think the Chinese are grossly ally in under underestimating the number of infected and the number of dead falls have just blown up eight hundred eight zero one eighty nine ninety nine a nationwide number eight hundred eight zero one eight nine nine nine is how you get on all right so let me know when you're done screening at least the first one so I can grab it so can I can I got going to grab but only read the first one you're right I assume that you can choose you know being bombarded now with calls and I want to hear from you eight hundred eight zero one eighty nine ninety nine Susan in Connecticut hi Susan you're on that what's your tribe do I think you for you she stopped in for now so you have to stop the plate yeah and what what time frame I think at least for two weeks until we get a handle do you agree with that number because I got to see the extent of what's going on over there too we know that millions already left in the in the will chime province and they're going everywhere except for their so right now would find out the extent of what's really going on this is in your your correct because I I you have the store yesterday and I I mentioned that new Bob this is all the same thing that at least half the population of war Han had already left before the crack down before the locked down so Susan thanks for the call I appreciate it let me grab Mike in Sarasota Mike yes or no on shutting down China air travel right now absolutely not I'm I'm not concerned about the eighty two hundred Americans who have died from the flu rather than a hundred and seventy Chinese how about your reaction to that well listen there's no doubt about it that the the common the regular seasonal flu kills a lot of people usually elderly individuals and young infants so if there's no doubt about it there are hundreds that die and I don't know the exact number but every season with the regular flu virus that typically hits there are many that do die in this country again typically elderly and in poor health are the victims I'm not brushing off Mike but I'm talking about I'm saying is I I do not agree I'm concerned like everyone else what a lot of Americans react free to quickly to something like a brand new virus one man doing nothing to protect themselves from right now there's a new two hundred Americans who have died this year from the back from the flu who don't get a flu shot cool let their kids don't get flu shots and nine million perfect all the other kids I mean I think yeah I I I I I understand I I don't have the exact stats of how many have died thus far but I know that hundreds and hundreds and hundreds if not thousands do die for the regular flow every single year so I'm not again I'm not talking that way Mike thanks for the call let's go to Diane Diane Nexon Schmidt should prompt shut down air travel to and from China right now yeah all they can get a cap on the disease I think it's a good idea and I love your show ocean that I'm pro calling ten minutes away from Mexico beach where Florida where hurricane Michael yet so we're listening she on the radio Diane thank you so much for checking in I hope the recovery still does well back in.

"You're northbound seventy five or a big beaver trucks to be is not going on so be careful avoid the area if you can meanwhile of the beat goes on in Washington and for that matter in New York president trump appealing a federal appeals court decision to make available eight years of his personal and business tax returns for review by New York investigators on the story are W. J. our national correspondent Steve Kassebaum good morning Steve good morning Paul W. I. how are you I am excellent and the it's funny because in this same packet of stories that you're on top of we at talk about the people who are trying to get rid of this president and then we also talk about another record day on Wall Street yes it and he loves and the stock market is is in positive territory because the reflect well upon him in his administration and it takes it's very seriously but he's got problems here in New York where a three judge federal appeals panel rejected his appeal to well they're fighting a subpoena for the Manhattan district attorney here in New York hi Vance one eight years of his tax returns and and the trump organization tax returns I he's investigating or you want to investigate the hush money payments that were made to women during the campaign who claimed that they have had affairs with Donald Trump before you become president if you know it it's not clear if you have anything other than a reasonable suspicion as a basis for this you have to present any evidence that there was any cover up of of the hush money payments were reimbursements to that then personal attorney Michael Cohen but he says that's what he's investigating the appeal panel says you have to comply and the president's attorneys argue that he that Noone from any and all local criminal prosecution while in the White House so they are fighting it all the way to the Supreme Court now all the time it's been wasted on all of these issues rather than doing the business of the people is just astonishing to me and here now a never Trumper like Cyrus Vance in all of the democratic judges and everybody else think that they're going to be the heroes by finally getting rid of Donald Trump for paying off women who live want to be paid off I guess or wanted to be paid off for accepted the money they add to accepted for to be a pay off regarding as some of his wrong activity at the same time Ronan Farrow is come out saying that the rape charges against Bill Clinton were very legitimate and should be investigated and I don't hear a word about that the only way they quote Ronan Farrow is if he has negative things to say about the president or other Republicans he has come out and said in this week or last vet V. V. charges against Bill Clinton are very real the rape charges and need to be looked at again and you don't hear a word about meanwhile in an effort to cut our noses of to spite our face we did have a record day on Wall Street and I guess that's just not important to the powers that be that want to get rid of this president they will never give him credit for anything positive and the reason for that up record close yesterday it well above twenty seven thousand points the S. and P. five hundred and the nasdaq composite index they too are in record that territory again yesterday at the close of the reason is people on wallstreet feel optimistic about trade talks because Wilbur Ross said that he he basically implied that the we're looking forward to the signing of a first aid agreement in the negotiations with China we don't know what that means really really they fall quite quite frankly although you it's it's it's not clear what that means the first speeds that are they going to find something that has me through it or they just go to signed a paper that state years of it you're the goal that we're working towards me because she should nonetheless Wall Street has seen it as as the read to be positive and it looked at their confidence and it's in stock prices up yesterday yeah well it'll be interesting to see if he turns out to be right regarding a holding out on China or not it'll be fascinating to watch along the way and we'll talk about it right here on W. Jackie mind if I say a personal out of what you're in the midst of doing because there are a lot of people can relate to what to what's fastened bomb is doing he outside delivering one of his kids to school this morning except there there a lot of dads and moms can relate to I know what I'm most mornings and and today the timing worked out differently with my schedule that resulted in me being outdoors here in downtown Brooklyn for this that live report the land that we can share this special parental moment with you I think it's fabulous good for you right thank you and in is your is your is this a son or daughter this is my older son I have two children one is just about to turn can and the other is seven and a half and and they both listen to my live reports during the morning and say they get away yeah I get to your daily work now do they allow you to kiss them good byes still the younger one more so than the older one yes indeed I understand thanks.
