"Shed, almost forgotten. At the corner, A man is putting sand and tea light candles into white paper bags. He will later return with a lighter, failing the dark neighborhood with a glowing grid for the trigger treaters. She wonders if it's not hazardous to allow small, uncoordinated people with polyester hems near so many flames. All day today and yesterday she has been reading the early naturalist William Bartram, who traveled through Florida in 17 74 because of him. She forgot Halloween. She's most definitely in love with that dead Quaker This is not to say that she is no longer in love with her husband. She is. But after 16 years together, perhaps they have blurred at the edges of each other's vision. She says to her dog, who was beside her at the window watching the candle man. One day you'll wake up and realize your favorite person has turned into a person shaped cloud. The dog ignores her because the dog is wise. In any event, her husband will inevitably win. Since Bartram takes the form of dead trees and dreams, and her husband takes the form of warm, pragmatic flesh. She picks up her cell. She wants to tell her best friend Meg, about her sudden, overwhelming love for the ghost of a Quaker naturalist. But then she remembers Meg doesn't want to be her best friend anymore. Week ago, Meg said very gently. I'm sorry. I just need to take a break. Outside in Florida. There's still the hot yellow wool of daylight in the kitchen. Her sons are eating their dinner of bean tacos glumly. They'd wanted to be ninjas, but she had to concoct something quickly and other costumes are hanging up in the laundry room. Earlier, she put her own long sleeved white button up backward on the younger boy, cross the arms around and tied them in the back, added a contractor's mask. She'd slit ID and colored with a silver Sharpie and because he was armless, pinned to candy bucket to the hem. Cannibal lecture. He is calling himself a little too on the nose. For the older boy. She cut eye holes in a white sheet for an old style ghost, though it rankled a white boy in a white sheet, Florida still the deep South. She hopes that the effect is mitigated by the rose buds along the hems. She also forgot the kindergartners spooky breakfast this morning. She failed to bring blueberry muffins and her smaller son had sat in his regular clothes in his tiny red chair, looking hopefully at the door as mothers and fathers in their masks and wings. Kept not being her poured in. She wasn't even thinking of him at that hour. She was thinking of William Bartram. Her husband comes in from work sees the costumes raises an eyebrow remains merciful. The boys Brighton, as if on a dimmer switch, her husband turns on thriller to get in the mood, and she watches them bop around. Twist in the heart. It's not yet dusk, but the shadows have stretched her husband puts on an old green Mohawk wig. The boys shimmy their costumes on again. The three of them head out. She is alone in the house with the dog. And William Bartram and the bags of Juan Lollipops that were all that remained on the drug store shelves. It's necessary to hand out candy her first year in the house, she righteously gave out toothbrushes. And it was an accidental that a heavy oak branch smashed her windshield. That night, she can almost see three blocks away into the kitchen of Meg's house. Where beautiful handmade costumes are being put on. Meg loves the sh. A week ago, when Meg broke up with her they were eating ginger scones that Meg had made from scratch and the bite in her mouth went so dry. That she couldn't swallow. For a long, long time. She just nodded as Meg spoke kindly and firmly, and she felt each rip as her heart was torn into smaller and smaller pieces and makes capable hands. Meg has enormous gray eyes and strong hips and shoulders and hair like a glass of dark honey with sunshine in it. Meg is the best person she knows far better than herself for her husband, maybe even better than William Bartram. Meg is the medical director of the abortion clinic in town, and all day she has to hold her patients, stories and their bodies as well as the tragic lack of imagination from the chanting protestors on the sidewalk. It would be too much for anyone, but it is not too much from Meg. On the mandolin Meg's house. There are pictures of Meg with her Children as babies secured on her back all three peering at the camera like koalas, She, too, has often felt the urge to ride nestled cozily on Meg's back. She would feel safe there her cheek against her strongest friend. But for the past week she has respected Meg's wish to take a break. And so she has not called Meg or stopped by her house for coffee or sent her Children down the street to play with Meg's Children until someone ran home, screaming with the bruise or low blood sugar. What is it about me that people need breaks from? She asks the dog who looks as though she wants to say something but out of innate gentleness refrains a generous kind of dog. The Labradoodle. Well, William Bartram won't need a break from her. The dead need nothing from us. The living take and take She brings William Bartram in his book costume out to the front porch, where it is cooler and fetches the candy in a bowl and the dog and the wine glass so big can hold a full bottle of $10 Sharaa's She settles herself under the bat light she plugged in because she forgot to make Jack o lanterns and watches real bats swinging between the rooftops. William Bartram seduced her with his drawings of horny turtles and dog faced alligators with his flights of ecstatic gratitude that lifted him toward God a week ago after the ginger scones and suffocating with sadness. She took the afternoon off from work and drove to make a note B and to look at antiques because she feels solace when she touches things that have survived generations of human hands. She stood in the center of my canopy, hating her unsweetened tea because it was encased in plastic foam that would disintegrate and float on the surface of the waters forever. Then she found the plaque about William Bartram, who had passed through my canopy in 17 74. When it was a seminal trading post called Casco Wila. The chief there at the time was called cow keeper. When Cao keeper heard what Bartram was doing traipsing about Florida, collecting floral specimens and final observations. He nicknamed him Puck buggy. This translates roughly to flower hunter, which, as bas, owed upon Bart, from by a warrior and hunter and proud owner of slaves had stripped from the many tribes he brutally subjugated. Was probably no great compliment. Still, what would bright eyed Puck Pug E have seen a Florida before the automobile before the airplane before the planned communities before the swarms of Mouseketeers? Trio of witches comes up the walk and not one says Thank you when she drops her bad candy in their bags, an infant dressed as a superhero, something like sweet potato crusted on his cheeks. Looks on as his mother holds the pillow case open for the treats and then clicks her tongue and disappointment. But her street is a dark one and full of rentals and the savvy tricker treaters mostly stay away. It's just before twilight in the sky is a brilliant orange. She is inside the pumpkin. In the absence of tiny ghouls. The lizards come out one last time filling the rednecks doing push ups on the sidewalk Like Bartram. She was once northerner dazzled by the frenzy, flora and fauna here. But that was a decade ago. She is no longer frightened of reptiles. She who was frightened of everything. She's frightened of climate change this summer, the hottest in history plants dying all around. She is frightened of the small sinkhole that opened in the rain yesterday near the southeast corner of her house, and maybe the shy, exploratory first steps of a much larger sinkhole. She's frightened of her Children, because now that they've arrived in the world, she has to stay here for as long as she can. But not longer than they do. She's frightened because maybe she has already become so cloudy is your husband that he has begun to look right through her. She is frightened. What he sees on the other side..

"This is here and now the Tokyo Olympics are supposed to begin in a little over two months, but Japan is dealing with 1/4 wave of covert 19 infections. It's so bad. The Olympic torch relay was pulled off the streets of Hiroshima today, and the government has extended a state of emergency for Tokyo in other areas until the end of May. The pandemic already forced the postponement of the 2020 games in our next guest says Japan should make the same decision this year. Sally Jenkins is a sports columnist for The Washington Post. He's on Skype and Sally. If you were a part of the Japanese delegation going to the International Olympic Committee trying to make this case, what would you say? My case would be, you know, Let's give everybody two countries the athletes, the hosts breathing room. It's not engraved in stone that the Olympics have to be held this year or or even next year. Why don't we get a grip on this global pandemic before we start trying to hold a gargantuan festival of 15,000 people from different nations descending on one host city that that's just insanity in the midst of a pandemic that still absolutely raging like a wildfire? Through many of the countries that would want to send delegations. But isn't this about more than just the pandemic? You write in your recent column for The Washington Post that Japan didn't surrender its sovereignty when it agreed to host the Olympics, But that's what seems to happen. When the host city signs a contract with the International Olympic Committee because the demands on that host city whether we're in a pandemic or not, are incredibly high. To say the least. One of the things that has been more and more apparent over the last couple of Olympic cycles is that the IOC really presents onerous contract terms to the host. To the point that no cities anymore, really willing to do business with them. You know, they really only had a couple of bidders for the games that wound up in Los Angeles and Ella's mayor was able to actually drive a pretty good bargain with the IOC. The leverage now is with the host cities because they recognized the Irish Sea understates the cost. Understates the risk and dumps all of the burden for financing the game's on host countries and host cities and then hordes, The lion share of revenues through licensing and media rights. And so on. And so what Los Angeles did was say, Well, you're gonna have to pay us $300 million off the top, and you're going to have to make some significant economic concessions to us if you want Los Angeles to take on this burden. And that's an attitude that I think any perspective host country from now on, should take with the IOC For years, The IOC developed this sort of patent of power. They behave almost like a nation itself, and they're not there in organization of a handful of officials that live in the Palace Hotel in Los and Switzerland. Is so in that Are you making the case then that if Japan wanted to do something here in terms of a postponement, or, you know, even in the unlikely case of a cancelation that in fact they have leverage to get concessions from the IOC. Their first obligation should be to their own national interest, not to a handful of Olympic sponsor companies. That's number one and some of the pressure driving Japan is fiscal But my point is, where is that contract enforceable. What court would would look kindly on the IOC, forcing an unwilling host nation to host 15,000 international visitors in the middle of a pandemic. I mean, that would absolutely ruin the reputation of the IOC on so Japan has more leverage than it may imagine. What do you think the future of the Olympics really looks like A This point. You mentioned that cities have have started saying no to the IOC demands, or if they say yes, like Los Angeles did that They're getting concessions. Um, do you think that it could ever just be a modest production that isn't overrun with excess costs that just focuses on the sport in the athleticism of people around the world? You know? Does it have to be so extra? I think the IOC is that a real fork in the road. They're either going to go in that direction and reform, thean frustration er of the games and also they're going to have to make more financial concessions. That's one fork that they could take or the other fork that they can take is the one they are currently on. Which is to increasingly just go to countries ruled by strong men. Where, For instance, you know she's jumping in China can spend limitless Lee for his own prestige and can use forced labor to get some of these projects done. That's the other fork in the road. Increasingly, the only people that the IOC has a really good chance of you getting acceptance from Vladimir Putin and jumping. Is that really the directly we want the Olympic Games to go. And that's the decision the IOC needs to make. Sally Jenkins is a sports columnist for The Washington Post. We're gonna link you to her column about the Olympics in Tokyo this summer. It here now dot org's Sally. Thank you very much. Thank you. The Biden administration is restoring protections against discrimination and health care based on sexual orientation and gender identity. The change reverses a Trump administration policy that said federal anti discrimination provisions did not apply to transgender individuals. And while it's unclear how this policy will affect state laws, many legislatures are moving forward with anti transgender bills. That includes Texas, where a group of bills would ban critical health care for transgender kids and teens. Houston Public Media's Sarah Wila, Ernst reports. Emiko Giles came out as gender non binary around age 14, meaning journals goes by. They then pronouns and doesn't identify strictly as a boy or a girl. They were in high school in Houston at the time and dealing with clinical depression and anxiety. A big part of that had to do with gender dysphoria..

"You know, I'm fine for so I'll live lives with his best. I can. Um I was calling to tell you guys, I agree with Gina 100%. It's almost like the stereotypes been given. I fly the flag in my house and stuff. But I wonder how many people actually think that maybe I'm a trump supporters something because of how everybody's fit behind the American flag show their hate And it's zee understand, actually with her because it's like when you're you see it. Your first thought is, I wonder if that's a trump supporter, especially when it's on the vehicle or something like that. You like. Don't just put a sign out. But the fact is, you know I love my country. I love my flag and the people are represented, but some people have made it. Look Actually, and it's it's terrible. That's exactly how I feel. If it's just if people are just displaying the American flag, I don't make any assumptions about them and less there. Displaying the American flag and then using it the beat people with at the Capitol or unless they're planning on reporting form or unless their truck flying it with a trump flag or something like that, or they have an American flag in their work. But if it if somebody just has an American flag or therefore, you know they have it on their house or their flying even if they're flying it from their truck. If that's the only thing Then I I I don't believe that if you see some guy in a truck driving down the street, and there's a big American flag flying out the back, you can't tell me you don't assume that that's a drunk first. He's on his way to the he's on his way to the trump flag store so he can have a matching set. I can tell you that because because I have no other evidence. If I have other evidence, then I'll start making making some assumptions. But just if somebody's displaying the American flag just just seeing you wearing that U S A hat. I would think Gina. There's Ah, There's a lovely woman who's really misguided. Probably a trump supporter. Waking back is a good thing. We need to get everybody flying the flag and put something like love underneath it. There's something that Yeah, well, hey, I would remind you of the sixties. And there were plenty of hippies with American flags and American flag shirts and American flag hats and American flag clothing. And everybody said those filthy hippies. They're desecrating the flag. So and then turn about So I would assume you know that you're a filthy hippie. No, desecrating the flag. Right, darling? It's all right. We'll talk later. Thanks. All right, we'll take it. "Is that I don't think you can. You could probably win if the presidential feet was open. But there's a person in that seat right now, who's being president? Whether you like him or not, or whether he's even acting like a president or not? You've got to take it away and the way to take it away. If you have to list the things you're going to do To change things, and you have to be really enthusiastic about it as Obama was in 2008, and although it may not seem that way, As Trump was in 2016 Hagar before we leave, you know, Michel and I each week campaign for you to run for mayor, and I was just thinking out loud this morning that the about the teachers are threatening to go on strike over Corona virus. You've got the restaurant workers saying, Hey, maybe Wila well suit, try to figure out a reopening plan. You got M t. They're threatening them with being fired. Boy. If I wasn't totally in charge, I would not even tried to negotiate with some of the people who have made the city such a difficult place to live in right now. I mean, we've we've got problems of and I think I don't know who would want to be mayor of this city. Well, I think that what has to happen and we haven't seen much of it lately is someone has to go beyond whatever their political beliefs are. And they have to have the guts to just say that something has to happen now. I'll tell you in 2008. We had a budget deficit similar to the one we have now and I Let New Yorkers know that we couldn't tax our way out of this problem. We're gonna have to make some difficult cuts, Two agencies and I paid the price for it. But I think that looking back on it now history will reveal that if that hadn't happened The state could have gone into default and no state has gone into default since Arizona did in 1929. I wasn't gonna let that happen to New York. Even if I had to pay the price for it, So I'm very happy to be in private. And talk to you guys. All right. Thanks, Governor. We'll check out next week.
