Wiggins scores season-best 31 points, Warriors beat Clippers

"Kawhi Leonard and Paul George were absent due to injuries and without them the warrior steamrolled the clippers beating LA one 24 one O 7. Andrew Wiggins made 6 threes and led Golden State with 31 points. Every game is going to be different. Steph's going to be stuff. Always. But tonight, the ball was moving to find a lot of people. And made some shots. Stefan curry added 22 points and Klay Thompson scored 15 of his 18 points in the first quarter. The clippers only scored 18 points in the second quarter and trailed by 29 points in the final period. In the loss, Marcus Moore senior with 19 points. Ryan leong, San Francisco

"Now. Is that because the warriors have figured something out and the Celtics are just too tired and too broken in terms of the warriors have cracked the code or was it just a really off night for a lot of guys and they're going to come roaring back and we're going to go to 7. To me right now in this moment after sitting down with Andrew Wiggins and knowing by the way that Steph Curry is going to want to avenge that three list game 5 that he had, I may give.

"Because yeah, draymond green, Klay Thompson, Steph Curry, infinitely better at talking about Andrew Wiggins and Andrew Wiggins. He's not the guy that's going to sit down in front of you and bang on his chest and tell you all about how we did it and why he did it and how he's the baddest mother bleeper that's ever walked around the damn town. But he is. There is a conversation to be had and you know, I think Steph in his amazing game for performance, if it comes down to it and the warriors win it all, I expect Steph Curry to be MVP. But one more incredible staff performance will turn that conversation into Steph just came up there and wholeheartedly 100% took and earned that MVP and if he doesn't have that one more game, there will be somebody somewhere, maybe it's.

"Come on now. Come on. So that part, I mean, so a couple of things that you mentioned that I need to dive into their number one, yes, he is the anti draymond as a persona. You've interviewed both of them. He is the opposite in terms of that sort of charisma. That's fair to say. Yes. But in terms of performance on the court, he has been the anti draymond in a more positive sense for Andrew any more negative sense for draymond. He has been the second best player on this team behind Steph and in game 5 when everything was on the line and the series is hanging in the balance Andrew Wiggins is the best player on the court. Wiggins drives through the lane puts it up with a right hand good Andrew Wiggins can do no wrong tonight with 22 points and 11 boards. Here's Wiggins using a screen to get three drives the lane and flushes with the right hand. 26 for Andrew Wiggins in game 5. The part of that that I find so funny is that when they made this trade for him, Andrew Wiggins 26 year old, 6 foot 7 wing, former number one overall pick at a Kansas and 20 14s incredible athlete. When they trade for him, Malika, back in February of 2020, literally nobody was like the NBA Finals is where this is gonna pay off. Literally no one was like this person is going to be a steadfast for the warriors. He was seen as a trade piece. Oh, where is Andrew Wiggins going to go? Who are they going to package him for? How are they going to make room with him as part of that deal? That was the discussion around Andrew Wiggins. And now, also diplomatically, he answered my question about, at the end of June, he's going to be eligible for the warriors to offer an extension. And he correctly and rightfully deferred to his agents, but then at the end, slipped in and hopefully I'm still a warrior because you have to remember that this is a guy for his first 6 seasons in the NBA. He had four different head coaches. There was no stability for him. And so, you know, as much as we look at all of the things that didn't come to fruition for Andrew Wiggins. You also have to look at the circumstances. What the warriors have done has been give him a foundation, a home base. Something reliable because he didn't necessarily have that. And I haven't interviewed Andrew Wiggins as much as I've interviewed many other players. I'm not going to pretend that I'm the Andrew Wiggins expert and I know him incredibly well, but I do know that he seems to have found a fit that and he feels that fit with Golden State because man, he's playing like it. And he has gotten the toughest defensive assignment in every series. So to refresh people's memories, Malika, because you've been there the whole way, right? Like Gary paid in the second, fractures his elbow against the grizzlies, and that is the guy who gets that assignment. Andrew Wiggins was not the guy that people said, you need to go shut down Luka Dončić or slow him down. However you can. But he is the, he was the only option and now he is the right answer to that question. Yeah, he slowed down Luka Dončić. He is made it so that Jayson Tatum, this blew my mind today. Jason Tatum has not even attempted a dunk in this series. And I know that that is fatigue. I imagine because the Celtics have had a tough path here. But part of it's Andrew Wiggins. Andrew Wiggins has elevated to once again, you know what? His new nickname? Mister, I told you so. Oh. He is mister. I told you so. Some people are whatever. Mister steal your girl, mister fab, he's mister. I told you so. You doubted me, and now shame on you. Yes, yes. Oh my God. I mean, what he did. I mean, he basically said that physically when he dunked on Luca. Brunson snaps it outside the Wiggins. Goes by pull. Wow. Oh my goodness. I've got to see this again. Can you describe what that looked like? Just because I want people to appreciate in this audio medium, what it was that happened. Everyone jumped off their couch. It was it looked like he talked his Vince Carter, you know, captain dunk talks oftentimes about when you talk back too far, sometimes that's when you can't quite get it down. And you've seen that with some of John morant's most incredible misses. He cocked back too far and slammed it down too hard and it was like, yo, this dude has no business throwing it down on a multiple time first team all MBA or someone who I think we can already probably say Luka Dončić. Yeah, Hall of Fame. No doubt. Going to be an MVP of this league will be an MBA champion at some point. This quote unquote soft dude just did that to Luca. What? And yet, it's starting to make sense. But that's me catching myself. See, that just the puzzle of Andrew Wiggins. You just remembered the branding that you just bestowed upon him Randy that he would never unilaterally declare about himself given his personality. And yeah, he can dunk, but the idea that he's coming through in these giant clutch moments on the biggest stage possible, that's the difference. And so after the break, Malika, I do want to close the loop on mister I told you so. And then I want to figure out what exactly the Boston Celtics are thinking about as everything seems to be falling apart around them. Starting your own small business can be a total roller coaster between all the ups and downs, twists and turns and highs and lows comes the actual business side of your business, which can really throw you for a loop. Luckily with QuickBooks, you can get paid, run payroll, and know where your business stands from the start. So no matter how bumpy the ride gets, you can always stay on track. New business, no problem. Success starts with Intuit QuickBooks, learn more at QuickBooks dot com. QuickBooks payroll, QuickBooks payments, and QuickBooks online account required. You know, the thing about his persona too is that when I watch these games, like Andrew Wiggins, as you said, he is restrained, deliberately, conspicuously not bothered by any of this, but it feels like when he does stuff that is, that is mister posterized your star. His teammates don't seem to enjoy anything else in the world more than that. I think again, it's because of that dichotomy between his no nonsense exterior almost are you checked in? Are you checked out sort of facial expression? The disconnect between that and what he is doing on the floor. He's the guy who isn't going to celebrate himself, but he wants to celebrate everyone around him and they want to celebrate him in turn..

"Those are kind of the three words that comes to mind when I think of how to describe his performances. Much past quarter up top to Wiggins, squares hand in his face three. It's good. Ten straight points for the warriors. They have been exactly what the warriors needed at moments when maybe the warriors didn't even know that that's what they needed. Off the amount of Wiggins the contact throws it off the rim and gets the roll. Andrew Wiggins chance for three and four 49 to go. But I hate that I have to throw in the word surprising to this because yes, he was an all star starter, but still this sort of journey of Andrew Wiggins is somewhat unbelievable even to me someone who grew up in the Bay Area who has great trust in admiration in Steve Kerr's system has absolute respect for the veteran moves of Steph Curry and draymond green and Klay Thompson. Still, through all of that, I find myself being surprised when time and time again because here's the thing. When Andrew Wiggins had that just absolutely monster, not like a Steph Curry, you know, game four monstrous, but mantras in his own right. There was a part of me that said, well, is he playing above his head? Is he going to come back down to earth slightly and clay is playing below so is he going to come back up? Where is this all going to even an average out, right? And Andrew Wiggins just hasn't. He just hasn't. This is his, he's not playing it over his head. This is very much eye level for him to see him be a first time all star. I shouldn't be surprised in seeing him lock down a MBA first team member in Jayson Tatum. And yet I still am rubbing my eyes a little bit and saying, is it going to fall off? And I think finally, and I apologize to Andrew Wiggins for this after 5 games of it. I think he's earned that tip of the hat. This is who Andrew Wiggins really is in this moment in time. Yeah, I mean, the all star thing. I mean, that was something to be brushed off. Even by me, I'm also in this group of people pleading for forgiveness from the person you interviewed because that's a democratic thing, right? Like you can get voted into that, right? There's a popularity contest. The warriors got a lot of fans. But yeah, oh my gosh. Yeah, that's a separate episode. The rabbit hole of KPop affecting NBA voting and NBA rewards. But the rewards of the NBA Finals, Malika. I mean, you just spoke to the two way aspect of him, right? Like this is somebody when you looked at him, you saw for the longest time years and years and years in Minnesota, you saw a bust, a number one overall pick bust. Who had a criticism that was levied at him all of the time and I'm curious if we're thinking of the same adjective that people would use to denigrate Andrew Wiggins back in the day. Two. Soft and lazy. Those were the two that he sort of carried around with him fairly or unfairly for a long time. With those, what were you thinking of? That's it. I was going soft, but you brought in lazy, and I'm curious when you sat down with him, did you ask him about any of that and how does he feel about those labels? Yeah, so one of the first things that I asked him was first about the game, and then about shedding this label of soft. You were sort of slapped with the label as soft. How do you reflect on that now? No, I feel like when someone puts it out there, it's kind of, you know, perception is kind of reality, you know, type thing. He never tried to give it life. I never really gave it no life, you know, I felt that people around me for like real hoopers. They all know nothing soft about me. The people around him felt that those statements were inaccurate that that reputation was inaccurate, but once something like that starts to float, it often gets picked up and carried. And so he knows it, he saw it, he heard it. Obviously, famously, the interaction between him, his Minnesota Timberwolves teammates and Jimmy Butler, there's a lot that's been made of that, which is why I found it so interesting when draymond green told me the other day that one of the ways that he knew he would fit in on the warriors is when Tom thibodeau called him and said, you're going to love this guy. Tibbs was like, you guys are going to love him. He competes. He defends, and he was telling us Jimmy loved him. And we all know how Jimmy Butler is like, you got any softness to you, Jimmy, don't like you. That's just how Jimmy is cutting. He's continued to show that he's continuing to get better. He's taken on every challenge that we've thrown in front of him and it's huge and we need him to do that for one more win. He said, there is not an ounce of soft in him. He said, Jimmy Butler doesn't like guys who have an ounce of soft in him. And so if Jimmy has come around to liking the sky, that means he's someone I'm going to get along with. So I asked him if there's any sense of proving people wrong. That's always the motivation. When you hear stuff like that, you don't let it get to you. When you hear stuff like that, it is fuel. No, how could it not be in time thibodaux of course, the former coach of the Minnesota Timberwolves, the man you just referenced there a guy who does not who does not brook much softness from his players either. The thing about the label, right, is that there was a rooting in a reality. And the pejorative is where I think it's fair to dispute what is existentially soft or lazy about a guy who has achieved and worked so hard. Objectively to get to where he is. But when Malika, when you look at his resume and he is, was I should say to be very clear when he was one of the worst rebounders at his position at his size for so long when he was one of the most inefficient scorers a guy who seemed to not just not just take bad shots, but also be unbothered by the criticism of it. That's the other part of him that I find fascinating, right? I think that that's where the lazy label came in and I'm not so sure that came in accurately. The care factor, right? That's what it was. It does he care. There's a laissez-faire approach to his game, but even sitting across from him, he has this bashfully slow smile that sort of creeps across his face and moments when he's tickled, but he is, he told me, I'm not about that raw Ross stuff, and he just isn't. Now I'm not with all the, you know, the rah rah rah stuff, you know, I keep it simple. I play my defense. Listening to him talk, he wasn't the most animated interview that I've had in these finals. He wasn't the most boisterous player when you watch him on the court, but he's still doing it. He's still doing all the things the warriors need. And so I think maybe the label for him now should just be misunderstood because I'm not saying that, you know, one game, a reputation corrects, but to know what it takes on this level and to literally be in the conversation with Steph Curry for Finals MVP..

"Finish this off as you prepare to jet over to the side of the country. I still think this is a serious Howard. I really do. I'm that convinced that the Celtics, if they can just find a way to stop beating themselves, to stop turning the ball over so foolishly as they often have and if they could just leave the referees alone. Like the referees, I don't know how you feel about this. They have not had a good postseason. I don't think, in general. I think NBA referees, this off season, and I'm addressing this to Monte mccutcheon. I'd say this to Monty if I saw him and if we do see him in Boston, you got to start to identify when flops are happening. Like you got it. This is not just directed at this series, but all throughout this postseason, I have seen flop after flop after flop, get cold, like referees whistle the reaction too often and I just think referees have to call what they're sure they see. And if they're not sure they saw it, don't call it, like don't call a defensive fire. And off its file, how about no call? Whatsoever on that play. I think there's too much flopping going around. All that said, the Celtics have to leave the refs alone. They have become obsessed with not getting calls. Marcus smart, allowed that to infect his game in the fourth quarter of game 5. Jayson Tatum has been demonstrative towards the referees, all postseason long, and that's affected his game. Grant Williams has not been a factor in these finals in part because he's constantly chirping at the referees. You've got to leave the referees alone and put bad plays out of your mind. Move on to the next one. If the Celtics do that, I think they can win game 6. And if the selfish win game 6, I'd pick the wood game 7 as well. So to me, this is the series on Thursday night. Celtics win, I think the win game 7, Golden State wins obviously, we're all going home for the rest of the year. Do you, how much of a chance do you give Boston not only do win game 6, but to still win this series? It's been a really bizarre series in so many ways and it's been completely unpredictable. I think from game to game, even if you thought coming out of game four, oh, the warriors have momentum as if there's any such thing as momentum in this particular series. Otherwise, I have momentum, and so you're not surprised they're going to win game 5 at home. Yeah, but not when Steph is going from scoring like 43 points to suddenly going zero for 9 from three. If you had said, Steph is going, if you had said coming out of game four, they're going to San Francisco. They have home court, but I can see the future. And by the way, Steph is going to miss 9 all 9 of his threes. He's going to score 16 points. You would have said, yep, Celtics win. And they didn't because of their turnovers because of all those warriors supporting cast guys that I was referring to earlier. This series has been thoroughly unpredictable, and they've both won on each other's court. And..

"Wiggins and his revival with this team. I wrote a little bit about it in the immediate aftermath over an SI dot com. But Wiggins to me is a great example of why fit matters. He was drafted number one overall in 2014 and was kind of immediately miscast in a franchise save your role. Like that's just not him. There were times he looked at like it. Remember when he was growing up in Canada, one of his nicknames was like maple Jordan. He was like he was a superstar in the making goes to Kansas, looks the part there as well. But you get to the pros, you can see pretty quickly that he's not a number one guy. And when you are pick number one, you have expectations you have to live up to. Now, Andrew Wiggins was never Anthony Bennett, like he was averaging good numbers in Minnesota over the years. He just wasn't the impact player that the Timberwolves expected when they acquired him in that first trade with for Kevin Love. So like Wiggins was fine, but then he goes to Golden State and it's like round peg round hole. Hand in glove. He was exactly what Golden State needed from like the very moment that he got there. Steve Kerr himself said during the Dallas series that Andrew Wiggins is as responsible for the revival of this warriors dynasty as anyone because if you remember when they got him back at the trade deadline in 2020, that was after Kevin Durant was gone. I think Andre odo was gone, but it was old, or whatever it was, they didn't have wing depth. They didn't have perimeter defense. And Andrew Wiggins comes in and provides that right away. He also shoots the three. Shot 38% from three in his first full season. Shot 39% from three. This past year. He didn't have to be or doesn't have to be the 20 point per game score, he may have been expected to be in Minnesota with Golden State. It's just like defend, rebound a little bit, make some shots near the rim and make three point shots when they're available to you. And that's exactly what he seems to be really good at. So, and also there's a continuity issue here as well. I mean, Wiggins gets drafted. He plays 6 plus years in Minnesota. He has four head coaches and a whole bunch of new teammates throughout those years. He comes to Golden State, it's Steve Kerr, and as the coach, it's bob Myers is the top executive. It's Steph clay draymond, the core of this team intact. These are all reasons they Andrew Wiggins is now thriving at this point of his career. Golden State has a guy that is not only great for them right now, but what's he like 27? Like he could be great for them for three, four, 5 more years. In this particular role with the warriors. No question. And you know, I say this all the time, context is everything, and I apply that in various different scenarios, but in this case, context is everything. The context of the team you're with matters so much in this league. Did Andrew Wiggins have athletically physically just basketball wise, the abilities to be a number one overall pick and have everything that comes with that and be up for all that..

"wiggins" Discussed on Code Story

"We can't use any of the default Apple APIs because they all depend on some delay that you put your finger down, you keep it in one place, you wait for some period of time, some number of hundreds of milliseconds. There's a little animation as the thing lifts up and lets you know you're dragging it now and now you can move it. So there's lots of little choices like that that fit with the values and what we were trying to do, but actually put us either not able to just use the platform conventions, but in many cases where something that people found confusing because it doesn't work the way that other apps work, which is kind of the point. So okay, from that point, then so how did you progress the product and how do you mature it and to kind of wrap that those questions in a box? How did you build your road map and decide, okay, this is the next most important thing to build. We're trying to find the way that we can take the weird, interesting things we're doing with the interface, the research, next generation elements, but also kind of make them approachable and accessible to someone that just downloads the app and tries it out. So a lot of that was a matter of embracing the weirdness, but kind of deciding where here's a place where being different really makes a huge difference for the feel of the app or what you can do with it and then will really double down on that will make it really good and then furthermore find good ways to explain it. So we've actually spent I would say as much time on the explanatory materials, which includes that we have a handbook, kind of a product manual with a bunch of videos. For example, we started a podcast, which originally was kind of just for fun, but we found that it really had a lot of value in the form of explaining all of our thinking and philosophies behind even the simplest of features. So for example, our very first podcast episode was about tool switching in about why we built our own custom tool switcher rather than using the Apple default pencil kit. I think a lot of folks when they first saw that or when they see the product on its own without that explanatory materials, they go, why are you doing it this weird way? Why don't you choose the apple default? And there's a whole bunch of reasons for that, but they can't be summarized in a couple of the sentences, so in me and my co host Mark can talk for 30 minutes 40 minutes an hour about all the philosophies and I wasn't even thinking anyone would want to listen to this, but as it turned out, it made a huge difference where someone could try the product, think this is really weird, then they listen to the podcast a little bit, then some lightbulbs turn on, they try the product again, and that those two things paired together really well. So I think the progression of the product and the maturing of it is both this trying to find the places where we're weird and that's really a benefit to the user, make those things as good as we can, explain them really thoroughly through handbook through podcasts through other forms. And then in some cases there's weird ideas that we kind of like to the lab, but maybe in the end we end up kind of deleting or just kind of conforming more to the standard so that we can as much as possible be comprehensible while still having these things that make us unique. Maybe it's just the way that I think, but I tend to applaud going outside of the OS standards. So when you were describing doing your own tools, switcher. I got excited. Because I tend to I tend to like that. I tend to like that creativity and kind of building your own ecosystem into your app there. I do have a question about the podcast. So I hear you saying it helps explain the thinking behind why you made some of the decisions that you made. Has it also helped in or has any sort of feedback surface to help you shape the product itself? Yeah, so our podcast, which is titled meta muse with the idea being it's kind of about it's not about news. It's about the team, the company, our process, our thinking, the behind the scenes stuff. And absolutely it is a conversation. First of all, we do have guests sometimes, which are sometimes muse, users or customers, sometimes they're just people we like from the tools for thought community, but through that we're having a literal conversation and many times that gets us interesting feedback or perspective on some design choices we've made. We ask people to respond on Twitter with their thoughts and we engage that way or write us on send us an email or something like that. And so we do often get through our support channels as well, where someone says, hey, I'm using the app and I listen to the podcast about this episode, but I actually really disagree with you about this choice you've made here. And it's a much better conversation because we do get people the right and support that haven't listened to the podcast, haven't read any of our articles on the web or anything like that. They just tried the app. Nothing else. And they write it and they go, this part of things works weirdly. I don't like it. It's different. It's not what I'm used to, and it's kind of like, you know, we can obviously respond and give the summarized version of here's why we made this decision, but it's way more interesting conversation when someone writes in and says, okay, I tried this new feature. I listened to the podcast. I read the memo, and I totally see your thinking. Here's why I disagree. Or here's why, in my use case, and here's a screenshot of a board, the port being the main kind of working canvas inside muse. Here's a screenshot of how I'm using it. I understand all your reasoning. Here's why I disagree. And that's like a super interesting conversation at that point, right? Because now you're really getting into it. It's not just the surface level thing. Just a very fun and rewarding way of having a two way conversation with everyone that's using our product or interested in the product. That's fantastic. I think that's fantastic for my listeners to hear that because it's a very creative way to go about that to go about having that conversation. I think it's a way that gets overlooked. So I'm super jazzed that it's working for you all. So let's switch to team. So how did you build your team and what did you look for in those people to indicate that they are the winning horses to join you? As with the interface, our team approach is also unusual or unusual in compared to let's say the Silicon Valley venture world that I was used to previously. So we're actually only 5 people right now, even though we've been doing this two and a half years. We have this partnership model where essentially we wanted to a little bit, maybe like an attorneys firm when you think of sort of making partner that kind of concept, but basically we wanted to have a higher talent density where everyone's wearing a lot of hats. Everyone's very entrepreneurial, but we keep the team small to void. I'm going to call it management overhead, but speaking as a person who's done a lot of management in various teams over the years, including it at Heroku at one point I was managing something like a hundred people with managers of managers and there's all the structure and process and all that sort of thing. And of course, people let you do a lot, let you have a big impact and certainly for that business that was infrastructure, that's just huge labor demands for sure. But I enjoy the creation and the making and the hands on stuff a lot more. And so for me, a team that's in the 5 to ten range just kind of a real sweet spot. And so me and my partners kind of agreed about that when we got started and we said, okay, is there a way we can do this where we can kind of keep the team really small, call it like a one pizza team? Maybe for as long as we can, maybe not forever and you know if you're successful, you do need to.

"Adam Wiggins was from California originally, but has lived in Berlin for the last decade. Earlier in his life, he did Burning Man art installations and was a DJ. Now, as he says, he's a middle aged family man, so he focuses on his family, his daughter, his adorable dog, and his career in software projects. His partner is also an immigrant, whom he met while in Berlin. Adam loves Berlin and in fact loves European cities in general for their focus on quality of life. He mentions that in the states, there's a large amount of economic freedom, but some inequality and more highs and lows to speak of. The culture in Berlin is full of history, culture, and a bohemian element, which is very attractive to music and to art. Adam is most well-known for starting Heroku, which completely simplified the way developers think interact and use infrastructure. Post its acquisition by Salesforce, he found himself thinking about the future of computing and started a research lab called ink and switch. The area they landed on was computing interfaces and usage around screen touch. After a few prototypes they landed on something that they thought was a solid combination of desktop precision with touchscreen mobility. This is the creation story of muse. As some backstory here, I may be best known in the tech world for having started Heroku. Thank you for that, by the way. Yeah, well, very, very welcome. Yeah, that was again something that my partners and I wanted to see web app deployment be different and we were very inspired by ruby and sort of the beauty and focus on developer happiness and things like that. And so you can see this theme in my career. I like creative tools. I like helping other people build things. After Heroku is in the enviable position that had some little bit of financial independence and I decided to some other folks start a research lab to think about what's next in computing, like not just what can we build today, but if we look forward 5 years, ten years, what's really on the horizon? And did the research lab, which is called Incan switch for a good for four years or so, and we explored many paths of research, including end user programming and local for software, but one of the ones was around. What is the next generation computing interface look like? So today, when we think of computer and particular computer for creative uses, we use a mouse for the keyboard, maybe something like a trackpad or a tablet like a wacom tablet or something. But really the interface we're using is not too different than what was invented at Xerox Parc, 30 years ago. And the question we were sort of asking ourselves was, okay, if we look forward ten years from now, is it still basically going to be the same sort of keyboard and mouse now 40 years in or is there something new? And of course, the big new change in computing interfaces is touch interfaces through phones. And you have generations of people growing up with touchscreens, but of course phones and are just completely impractical for productive creative uses. You wouldn't want to edit a spreadsheet even writing an email editing code. There's some interesting things that people have done with that. But the reality is the small screen, the total lack of precision with your fingers. It's just not right for that. And so we were kind of looking at this. Okay, touch is this most notable advancement in computing interfaces and particularly one that a generation was growing up with. But then it being so unsuited for more professional creative uses and then the desktop computer as being something that's kind of in maintenance mode hasn't been a lot of big advances in the Windows Linux Mac world and pretty good while. And so we said, okay, can those come together in some way? And that led us to researching the tablet line of thinking and tablet stylus interfaces. And through a series of prototypes there, we eventually settled on what we think could be an interesting blending of that desktop style pro precise fast, powerful interface with touchscreens. Tell me about the MVP. So that first product you built, how long did it take you to build and what sort of tools did you use to bring it to life? Because we started in the research lab, we maybe had a slightly different path here than you would in maybe or I have had in my commercial ventures in the past, which is we built a series of prototypes on basically all of the tablet platforms that existed. So that included Android, the Android tablets, Microsoft surface, tablets, which are quite good in their own way. And then the Chrome OS tablets, and in fact, the MVP for really the first kind of version first prototype, which you can read, we wrote an essay about this called capstone, a tablet for thinking. And so we built the first version of views for Chrome OS. So using web technology and using a lot of the kind of tablet interface API to like the stylus APIs that are part of Chrome OS. And one of the takeaways there was, while there was many ways that that the app worked really well, we found that the tablet platform ended up being sort of disappointing for us. And we ended up porting that over or rather my now partner Yulia, who's one of the best iOS engineers that I know ended up porting over that prototype to the iPad in about two weeks, and that sort of became our MVP. So during that process during the process of porting it over, perhaps even before, there's probably a line, a blurry line there. But when you're building any MVP, you've got to make certain decisions and tradeoffs about what you're going to start with, right? Or what sort of debt you're going to take on and tell me about some of those decisions that you had to make and how you coped with them. Yeah, I think the biggest category of tradeoffs and decisions we've had to make throughout this product, but especially in those early days is doing weird experimental stuff that is the research and conforming to the status quo or what people expect. The whole reason we're doing this is that we think they're sort of a lack of experimentation and lack of bigger picture thinking or more ambition around what our computing interfaces can be. And at the same time, if you come up with something weird and interesting that fulfills, we had certain criteria. It has to be fast. It has to be precise, but we also want it to be intimate and personal and emotive. And so we come up with a iterate on a bunch of things come up with features or interface elements that fulfilled that and would even test them and usability tests and that sort of thing. But then when we go to bring it to, let's say out of the lab to the MVP that you're talking about where someone can just sort of download it and try it, and then they go, wow, this is really weird. It just does not behave in any way the way that I expected. So to take a very simple example, one of our top values is performance, just everything has to be fast all the time. The iPad has a 120 frames per second, refresh on its screen, and we wanted to basically keep up with that in contrast to, I think a lot of productivity software that often has you waiting around and looking at spinners. One example of the interface where we wanted to make sure it was fast is that you wouldn't have to ever wait for something simple like. So the muses are kind of a spatial canvas where you move these cards around on a board, and we didn't want you to have to put your finger down on the card. Wait a minute for it to kind of register that you want to drag it and then drag it, which is the way that it usually works on touchscreens. Instead, we want it to be instantaneously, you can kind of bring your finger in from the side in one sweeping motion. You can even start moving it before you touch the card, you bring it down on the card and it starts moving with your finger, instantaneously no weighting. But that I mean actually means that we have to go completely off.

"This is very very difficult especially for somebody in wiggins position. you know. this is difficult for anybody. Who's resisting and of course we talk a lot about resisting You know all these mandates and there are a lot more resistance now than before but it just seems like they can sort these things out when they do do this to an individual or a company they punish you is a threat is an intimidation as violence. And they and they push that and that it makes it very difficult especially when We have been a nation that believes in following the law and and many people with strong religious beliefs. Believe you follow the law. And so they present these things for public health reasons and what they do. And you've already mentioned that they to turn it around and make wiggins the problem and the victim but He his his resistance isn't the problem. It's it's the problem that there are these laws and rules. And i think one thing that there's a way of handling this is difficult because if people don't You know they want to object and and Wiggins makes a lot of strong points on why but the financial thing is just overwhelming but philosophically speaking he has every right and we all have an obligation that win the law says you do such and such. And that's what we're dealing with we're dealing with bad laws laws being passed by bureaucrats all being endorsed by our courts and it's violation. Not only you know of our constitution but a of personal liberty and that that is What has to be said. So how can we resist. If we believe in law and order and you're a small number of people Are aren't you off on the wrong track if you're if you're objected to know i think if if you're confident about it is about what they're doing is wrong. I think we all have more obligations to make that point in a free society. We used to be able to do that without any fear but now the you know they didn't come they didn't come to we. We're going to put you in jail or you said something and it was politically incorrect. But they will destroy a person that would destroy their income their businesses in there and financial they can destroy them but i follow a principal. There is such thing as a higher law. the higher law for me is You know we we. We have the legislative law. We have the constitution the constitution of course not not a lot of people have that much respect for it and The bureaucrats aren't supposed to write all these laws over there actually unconstitutional So if there's a lot of conflict there. I think people should be able to for their personal well-being should be able to resort to the higher law. Which is based on morality based on. You know for a libertarian. That who's initiating the violence whose causing the violence who's who's causing the the problems in society and Obviously we're contending right here that if this government regulation on vaccines that's causing this directive problem with Way guns but this goes on and on thousands and thousands of people are being involved..

Conference commissioner angle. Here from san antonio spurs assistant coach becky hammon. Espn star laura. Rutledge hardcore carnivore. Founder just prowls and more these special episodes air in october. So be sure to catch. That's what she said presented by academy available wherever you enjoy your podcasts. Surrounding you're mentioning. These city ordinances that require resident athletes to be vaccinated in order to play their home games. New york city is one of them. The other one of great note here is san francisco. And this is where andrew wiggins and i guess the andrew wiggins situation do enter the. Nba's craw. i suppose how have the warriors dealt with this house has been different from kyrie well in brooklyn. The nets are all at least publicly directly in alignment behind kyri. They're all saying we're not worried about it gonna do a kyri has to do. We support him saying that worked out. That was not necessarily the case in golden state again. This is something that i know. It became public shortly before the season began but privately this was an issue for the warriors for several weeks leading up the training camp. We don't exactly know what andrew wiggins methodology was. But when you know. Andrew wiggins was pretty firm when he spoke at media day that he was really against it. In for what i believe in whether as one thing or another get the vaccine show not gonna vaccination was the reason for not just explaining what you believe is on your business. That's what it comes down to. You know ask you what your beliefs guys. What you think is right or wrong. The big difference. Is that the california san francisco law isn't yet in effect so wiggins was able to attend media day and practice but coming up later this month will go into effect and in that case like wiggins would would not be able to play home games and from what i understand several Golden state warriors players in addition to the team leaned very hardly on andrew trying to convince him to do this. And then you had draymond green come out and basically say no man should force another man to get vaccinated. It's not my place nor my business on whether he gets vaccinated or not. Oh who else is fascinated or if you're fascinated and i'm not or if he isn't she is that's none of my business. I think there is something to be said for people's concern about something that's being pressed sohar like. Why are you pressing this sohar. I think you have to honor people's fillings and their own personal beliefs. And i think that's been loss brian that that that monologue. I just wanna be clear about this. He kind of became a heroic figure to a lot of people that i don't think would consider draymond green a hero before they heard him. Say this about wiggins yes and I don't know if kyrie irving what align himself with. Ted cruz wake. Ted cruz. aligned himself with kyrie irving. it's sort of made unusual bedfellows. Yes brian yes. America's cova death count was soaring past seven hundred thousand. There was ted cruz. The republican senator from texas who tweeted in reference to notable mba players who had expressed vaccine hesitancy quotes. I stand with kyrie. Irving i stand with andrew wiggins. I stand with bradley beal. I stand with jonathan isaac hashtag. Nba hashtag. your body your choice. Yeah and you also had lebron james basically backing up drain greens supportive. Andrew wiggins is independent. Joyce and not only lebron james a A very vocal person within the nba. But also definitely a thought leader in the african american community. But brian on the wiggins thing. What was stunning to me. And this has happened over the last. you know. we're recording on tuesday. It's happened over. The last twenty four hours is a significant development in this story. That changes the story fundamentally right so over the weekend The golden state warriors. Coach steve kerr announced that andrew wiggins have been vaccinated and would be available for their games. going forward Andrew got vaccinated. Just told me today that it was fine with us acknowledging it and that'll be the end of it so i'm not going to answer any questions beyond that. His decision apparently came in the wake of the nba announcing they would Doc players pay and You know basically despite what. Andrew described very vehemently as his philosophy on it West and a week later he He got the job as it. Were seizing starnes. Miss this basketball. I didn't want to get the vaccination. Something added to the thing about it is the nba doesn't have a mandate but they're they're basically making it next to impossible to be able to operate without getting the vaccine on your become they're stopping me and the nba has said that now ninety five percent of its players have received at least one dose and that a significant percentage of those players have done so in the last couple of weeks. And it's it's really. The threat of lost pay and the protocols of the league is passed that have contributed to pushing that number closer to one hundred percent and so while ted cruz and kyri or andrew wiggins or draymond green or lebron can say whatever they want and by the way drain on the brun are vaccinated. Ultimately the nba is a private enterprise and ultimate more talking about millions of dollars and that has been a guiding principle for a lot of players in this. But the thing about lebron. Brian is that you didn't three tweet. Re dre comments. He also spoke about this at his own media day interview with some people's bodies and well beings in also. I don't feel like for me personally now. Should get involved in and and what people should do their bodies and their livelihoods but as far as speaking for everybody in air individualities and things they want to do Like that's my. That's not my job which then prompted and his canter. The celtics center to go on cnn to then criticized. Lebron heard. I was very disappointed and ridiculous. You know obviously lebron james. He's one of the face off the league. And i want to go out there and say to encouraging. Everyone is going to get this vaccine. So we can save other lives. And this then led to kareem abdul jabbar. Brian who sometimes feels like the moral centre of the nba. At this point this towering figure in american cultural history it led to him publishing an essay on sub stack. that said quote. I'm a huge fan of lebron james but this time lebron is just plain wrong and his being wrong could be deadly especially to the black community. Where all for freedom but not at the expense of others nor if it damages the country and quote which is basically this now public disagreement among some of the greatest players in the history of the sport playing out very very publicly and i can't imagine the league office here.

"Marks. The general manager's position he is just gone right into punt formation. When talking to the media sense said it's a private matter for kyrie. Well it is a private matter for kyrie but it's a heck of a problem for the nets Whether they want to hide behind that statement or not yeah. It feels like look. There's a larger conversation we'll touch on here about public health and privacy and how many of these choices are around vaccination. But we're really talking about here is also just a sports business story. It's actually just a sports story. What happens when one of the three best players on the nba. Title favorite ends up not being able to play a half of their games because of a local ordinance and it feels like you know so much of this got kicked off through this rolling stone story that came out and look. This is not spn's reporting but it was explosive reporting. They talked to kyrie's aunt she's the head of his family foundation. She's described as one of the few people in his regular circle of advisers. How would you describe what she said. As kyrie's motives here are concerned. I don't wanna put words in her mouth but she basically implied that kyrie was going to be fighting a grander fight beyond just whether he could play in the nba or not Just basically a fight for anybody who felt that they were being forced to vaccinate or forced to do anything. I think if i recall his aunt said something along the lines of what he's doing is not religious based its moral based knowing whether his aunt was speaking for him or whether she was speaking on your own would be a key yes or no question to get from kyrie irving at some point hiree definitely feels a draw to be much bigger than basketball and in certain areas in his life. He has been and by the way in some areas of his life. It's been very admirable. Yeah and you know. It's it's a big standard. Take i think for modern athletes who want to be you know bigger than athletes. The icon is mohammed ali and muhammad ali at a very delicate time and our country stood up for what he believed in in terms of the draft. And i don't want to put words into kyrie's mouth or make an assumption of what he's thinking because that's really dangerous. But i think hiree would like to be somebody who is seen as that type of inspirational person beyond the game hiree in the past has dabbled around the concept of trying to start his own league away from the nba. So you know he has a guy to say the he's a guy that he thinks. Big is true. I believe he's even talked about After his playing career going living on a commun- things of this nature so there's no telling what he may say and what he may do quite frankly and pablo. It's actually my preference as somebody who covers the nba. I really made a decision a couple of years ago. Then i'm gonna came to kyri. I was only going to focus on the rectangle of the basketball court. Because after that got a little bit squishy and you could find yourself sort of stuck in a swamp trying to follow going on in this case we have no choice because his actions and words outside the basketball court affect the team on the court. Who's maybe highest profile team in the nba. And a chance to win the championship this year. Which is the core of everything that we do. At certain point. It feels like i guess. Life has dealt me this hand where. I must now go hunting for these instagram posts. Tyree has started liking in which vaccines are alleged to be part of a plot to connect people to a master computer on behalf of satan. I can't say for sure that's why he thinks. But certainly there's evidence that he is is studying those concepts. So what does happen from here brian. How long does go on. What kind of resolution do you see on the horizon. If at all so the nba is doing everything in its power to force players into getting the vaccine. The lives of players who are unvaccinated are much more uncomfortable than their vaccinated teammates from them. Not being able to sit in the sections of the plane. That are more comfortable to them. Not being able to eat with their teammates to how much they have to test to Whether they may have to spend time away from the team if they're exposed to cova And most importantly they're gonna take kyrie irvings money for games that he doesn't play and not much. Are we talking about ryan well. That's a key factor here so the nba players union and the league as we speak are fighting over this exact thing the nba in an effort to force kyrie and andrew wiggins quite frankly to get vaccinated decided they were not going to pay a players if they if they had to sit due to the city rules and for kyrie irving that is going to be in the neighborhood of four hundred thousand dollars per game. They are absolutely trying to turn the screw as hard as possible on on kyrie to get vaccine so brian i mean looking at your latest reporting here with woes tonight about what. The nets are kind of feeling about all of this right now with two weeks to go before the season starts. How would you describe how the organization is approaching this at this point. Well they've been hopeful that kyrie you know would get compliance would get vaccinated and since that is not happening and the reality pablo is. There's only one day left in the entire preseason where the nets are are scheduled to be out of new york. And that's a that's a one game a one day trip to philadelphia for a game next week. it's kyra can't practice at least with the team and so as they peak ahead to their early season schedule they have six game homestand in mid october where it would be eleven consecutive days. Where under the current rules of kyrie is not compliant. He only play in those six games. He can't practice on the days off in between man and so it's very difficult in the national basketball association to not play a practice with your team for seven to ten to fourteen days at a time and just show up and play and the nets are now starting to come to terms with the reality that their hopes that kyrie would get this Taking care of aren't going through. You know they were. Hopefully we could go in here. They are a week later. It's not taking so. They have started to to examine whether or not they want to allow kyrie to be a part time player. Do they want to enter into a situation where they will have to go through. These shock changes to their team bringing kyrie in and out There's even a stretch pablo in in november and december. Where they're at home for twenty out of twenty six days i mean the nba has accepts stretches. The reality is that the nets are starting to think that they may have to make a decision on this. I mean. i don't think they're there yet. But i think they are trying to be responsible and the thing about is they're very deep team. You know they don't have another kyrie irving but they have another great point. Guard have another. Mvp level point guard right there in james harden and they have a patty mills who they who is their major offseason free agent signing Who is a starter level player. He's not kyrie irving. Don't get me wrong. But he is a quality replacement and so they are beginning to to to say listen. We have to go through a process here and really pablo if i could translate it. Yeah i think it's the nets beginning to push back To basically say kyri we. We will support your decision either way. But you've got to make that decision you can't sit on the fence and so we may be headed toward that becoming a you know a pinch point four korean the nets in the short term future. But it would. Just be blunt with me here about this brian because if the nets are beginning to push back in a decision might be made a very tough decision i mean are we talking about a trade. Are we talking about something else. Who in the organization has the power on that. How how's the power structure work here. Well it's it's be kevin durant. Kevin durant is the guy who really is the point person on any big decision with the nets. This would be a huge. You know the situation really is is that kyri is is not a valuable player in new york. If he's not vaccinated he's a valuable player in twenty seven other cities he's how slayer in new york. He's half a player in new york and the nets are trying to title this year. Kyrie may feel unfair. But it's the reality. It's the reality of the nets have to play with and and so. I don't think we're at that point and i don't think katie is at that point but i think a week ago. Everybody was hopeful and sort of in full support. That is now starting to come in doubt and the nets in in kevin durant are going to have to evaluate their options. And i don't want to talk about trade because that starts to fire people up. But let's get aggregated buddy if you are going to be a new the every other player currently playing in new york no matter where they are on the vaccination has gotten vaccine because they understand if you wanna be a player in new york. This what you have to do right now. Kyri has not made that decision and so you have to start to deduct about whether he wants to be a player in new york and that's a situation that the nets have to do the calculus begin to think about doing it. So brian before my head explodes at all of these possibilities now of what happens to kyrie and his organization and what kevin durant ask. Do any of it..

kyrie nba nets kyrie irving pablo basketball andrew wiggins mohammed ali brian muhammad ali Tyree new york patty mills kyra kevin durant ryan james harden philadelphia kyri

That supposedly came from a nine millimeter semiautomatic. Neither were shell casings.
