"He tells me about his struggles, his successes and even how cured his back pain German. Conversation the join Alain already I'm here at Joey Nolan. How're you doing I'm doing good. How are you doing pretty well can you just tell the listeners a little bit about yourself? So. For those of you who don't know I ended the founder and CEO of age apparel. So that is. An East, apparel design in printing company here in Kansas But we work global scale providing a custom eastwards, jerseys, t shirts, hats, these things like that to. Arner across the world. Cup notable ones would be W. He's worth program. mcmurray and we recently partnered with. Trevor May. Face Ball player and active streamer on twitch. Awesome. He and I I have some notes to get into all that the trevor may stuff and everything. So. This real quick. You did you grow up around here? Yeah born and raised in Wichita Kansas perfect and then wichita state. Right? which was a Grad did you guys I'm not I'm not actually that's. That's where it Kinda takes a left turn I. Tell me the story. Yeah So I right out of high school actually I decided to. Take that back. I had been doing a lot of freelance graphic design work and a lot of gaining my entire. High School. Interest Elementary. School. Years and it's real quick. What type of typographic design I mean as a high schooler? What graphic design? What are you doing? So it started out just a logos and like social media. Graphics like twitter facebook. Youtube headers, things like that. Offer my own personal eastward teams also. That's how it all got started. I wasn't like I WANNA, be a graphic designer. It was just playing video games. Leader of a team, we had no money. So I mean I was young so it was just like. I got to create some graphics I. Guess You don't do this Download Photoshop. and. Just Youtube top myself and turns out I actually have a knack for it. Yeah. So, Vin for like the next probably four or five years throughout high school rally I started doing graphic design for Miami sports team but also at other teams in the industry and I just I got really comfortable with working for myself and doing things that made me happy. Not necessarily a provided me a ton of financial gain right away. But just you know with something that I enjoyed and From that point for I didn't really know exactly what my dress shouldn't be out of high school. I don't really want to work as a graphic designer at a for that's not right. And I definitely was like a horrible student shop to school or anything like that out. Pretty bad. Ed So I decided I didn't really know exactly what I wanted to do. So I took a year which is like the. Like how dare you take a year? It's GONNA turn into five. All you ever. It always does it always does and. I I heard that I was like well. I'm going to do it but I'm not going to take a year off to eat potato chips that mom mom and dad's house. I'm GonNa, take your off to like either travel are creative business or at least figure out what the heck I'm GonNa do sure in college next year. Financially. I. Just wasn't ready to take that that dead on and not know what that investment was. You know if you're GONNA put a hundred thousand dollars into something I hope you know a little bit about what the return was going to be. So I. Took that year and It did not lead to a ton of traveling or a ton of Of. accomplishments right away actually did exactly what people warned me something happens, and then you end up getting derail in Assam point you're either playing against or watching TV or picture like dealing with something I actually ended up having like crazy back pain. It was like a sciatic nerve pain super debilitating. So I never ended up going on the trips that I had planned or anything like that right? Well. During that period of time trying to heal my back everything I continued my graphic design through through that just freelance in creating content on Youtube a lot of like to`real on Youtube. But how did you certain things actually got some pretty good hits and that led me to. Think okay. So this is maybe something like content creation or at least like graphic design in the sports community to some degree are to be take a before take notice. And I then entered a eastwards apparel contests for a professional sports team. Okay and. That is win things started to change. I enter that contest randomly and I ended up winning it. Wow. Okay, that's Kinda. Cool. You know never designed apparel before but was like a jersey. What was it was a Jersey Yeah so there was several options like t shirts could he's hats I would run a Jersey what I did. It ended up working out and So did You know the ideal story would be rate the narrow created a feral. Right. Wing while wildly successful. But that's actually not what happened for the next year I still was struggling with that back paid in everything and just kind of. Playing with different online businesses ran things you know drop shipping stores at one point. I was selling electric long boards. You know like I was doing all sorts of things. And then. I. Got to this breaking point of living at home and just like not doing enough to not succeed enough. I've got some pressure on somehow. And so that is when I I told my girlfriend was like I'm GonNa move out because I don't think this healthy for anymore. Sure. I'm there's not enough pressure to do something like actually succeed in. So I had like thousand dollars in my bank account got approved for release. I don't even know how ed moved out with my girlfriend with thousand dollars and I told her I will get a job. If I have to give me I have thousand dollars. We put the down payment. We've got like two months here. Give me two months to see if I can make something figure it out I, I swear. I. Will and so that is when I had like a real sit moment with myself and I was like. Man. What am I GONNA do They actually paid this rent because I mean like I am a very particular person the reason I didn't go to school or call it added show up to school lot I'm just have difficult time with certain things like thorny or or just being to. To confined I guess sure. Yeah, and so anyways At that point I was just writing ideas down on a piece of paper just is many things that I can think of just as they came just write these down some of them didn't even make sense. and. One of them was this this word combination..

All Star game, so so we did have a couple of those big events happen early in the. in yeah, when you know kind of those first cases of Covid You know made their way to Wichita. Obviously big events you know was one of the the first you started to hear the cancellations and in definitely it's. It's been tough. that hospitality industry was. One of the burst industries to to feel that impact manion impacted and and it might be one of the the last to recover round with knowing that big events are You know one of the last things that that are gonNA. Come back, so in for us. That's the thing you know sporting events, meetings, meetings and conventions. Those, are those are the things that drive people to which tie and in into our hotels so so you know immediately we started to. Really. We just wanted to local. When when all of that happened? We wanted to make sure that we were communicating to. Our partners so that being you know hotels, restaurants, attractions museums We just wanted to make sure we were communicating. Resources that we were doing our part to communicate. You know by putting information on our website. Trying to keep things as up to date as possible an things started to as as those phases happen, and things started to reopen. Just trying to make sure that we were communicating that you know on our website and. Trying to keep on top of events as they were either canceled or postponed, you know in the good news is a lot of things were postponed so You know so you know we will see those again but maybe not. When we originally had thought we would so sure and that's kind of where where we are now. Is really were just trying to make sure that anyone who is potentially the coming to Wichita? But they have that information in no What's happening in which time in what what things are in place and what they would need to know as a visitor? In order to to come here, yeah, so their expectations are set in their not missing out on something. That may be closed right now. That isn't normally and yeah. Yes, yeah, so one of the things you guys are doing right now. Kind of making the best of the situation and also just kind of a big milestone is the hundred and fiftieth birthday, for which saw which is July twenty first. I really wanted to talk to brandon about his perspective about the protest rallies and Blacken Justice, following the tragic death of Floyd. This is a really good conversation that really opened my eyes to what's going on in our city and the country general, please feel free to reach out to brandon for any further questions, but endure my conversation with Brandon Johnson. All Right? I'm here with Brandon Johnson. How you doing brandon? I'm doing pretty good about yourself in pretty good Can you just briefly introduce yourself people that don't know you? Yeah so on Wichita City Council representing district one going into my thirty or an office and also the vice chair of the Kansas. Democratic Party. Austin, Can you just briefly kind of talk about the City Council in general I? Don't know a lot of people know how it works or what you do, so, can you just talk about that a little bit? Yes. We're a council manager form of government. We have a city manager who kind of runs the city. He's the one employee of the city council. There's seven of us the mayor who is elected at large and then their sixth district, so I represent district wide, and we're just responsible for the daily governing of the city and right now with everything going on the police at least Wichita. Police Department falls under US okay How often is it yearly elections for City Council? It's It staggered, but it's every four years. Twenty, seventeen I'm up for reelection next year last year. Of course, we had an election mayor and district five district to district four okay. and. Can you just talk about a little bit about like I? Guess you mentioned like the polices underneath. What kind of BS power? I don't know if that's the word is. But what kind of power does the city council hold as far as policies? That kind of thing? So we we adopt formal policy so folks right now. Looking for policy change the chief can do that on his own, and it gets ratified by the city manager. We as a policy body can say this is the direction we want our city to go, and then the city manager would implement that with the police shoe, so we can't on our own individually change things, but we can't have those conversations with the city manager and the police chief and work towards policy. Okay. Cool one questions I have several questions of my own also crowdsourcing questions, so and somebody asking you explain the process of how income from taxes or allocated towards schools or parks or sidewalk, maintenance or police department against for that matter. Can you talk about how that? Happens. Got The beat questions..

"There had been a lot of things I've learned through eighty nine. I'm going through it so it's almost like it is like now family just like it's like. Oh Yeah it's like it a mute illegal. There's it's hard to be favorite bar but it as I think like everything is great experience. I mean you're never gonNA forget this and it's I'm already kind of doing it but like it's going to be like a launchpad for your career and it's GonNa be really cool to see where it goes from here Do you have any advice for others? That may want to try out for American idol or anything like that. I mean all I can say as you know I mean if you are if you are up to singing and like playing music like if you think. That's what he should do. You know if you like. That's if even be like little bit of you know that really knew like yeah and I should try it out. Mechanized great platform do so. I think everyone should like you know who feels like this. Go and do the autism in I think this At least in down give it a try. This try awesome. So you'd have a couple of kind of general questions and then just a couple of quick questions about Wichita kind of your favorite parts of Wichita and but have you had any previous struggles in music before getting to American idol. Or what's been your biggest struggle in music but before this like. I mean Our struggling artist Everything for this was struggling still now. This is even struggling. It's like it's like I mean you know it's like so awesome like united made my own music distant and like not started going around traveling round playing in playing out in the streets playing out in Broadway Wall and blowing out here and there. So you New England's I for when I think about those times in everything was struggling I was like it was a great deal like I played in the bliss. It's like where I had like. Sing my lungs out Speaking English it's like it's been widely. Ornie has been long zoning out and it's just getting started this is really really cool to see how it takes off after this is your definition of success. I mean the definition of success. That's a hard question. Put you on the spot a little bit. This definition of success would being leaving a good light being good. Borsen you know helping people eagerly as much as you leave your life for yourself in a drag it part of to the people. Do you sell nine lead to the good self of yourself so if you can do that if you can speak do being yourself in being good and being good for the people you are you are I love that man. I love that answer a couple questions. What is your favorite part of Wichita? Or what's like a hidden gem? Maybe like a restaurant that people might not have heard of. What's your favorite part I like hanging around our coffeehouse too but yeah I like hanging around there. It's like atmosphere. I like Walk Round Union Center brick buildings in a absolutely school in antics classic. I liked the fields of it in there in like the movie theater Aaron the parking lot we drive there sometimes like introducing their displays in that sweet spot. You know you can see all too there. There's law. I like two hours from here. This is all Wilson Lake Awesome. That place is chew on C. HEELS. In which the Sheriff since. Yeah absolutely. That's cool. Do you think you'll stick around Wichita for awhile or just depending how music goes might have to go somewhere bigger. I'm in a four now like you know I'm in which I and I'm like I'm I have no so much planned out like now I'm GonNa go there and see how it goes. How many full unfold in Iowa as yeah What do you wish which had that? It doesn't have? Or what would you improve about Wichita if you could I mean about which style what would I improve for now? For instance I would really think about cleaning. The river in that river is like the six years earlier game the river was flowing glean a never saw any blasting any kind of out there. Now I'M GONNA go out there. It's a good point very good point. Ans- just kind of one last question. What does Wichita mean to you? I mean I've spend my like you or my I'm here. You know three years like you know in traveling and the Diamond. I've spent here and admitted relations connections with people here in my family friends ear. You know so it's like it is a bar. The home you against against is the fact that I was born in all which is going to be my second home to you. This is like the place I've invested myself in part of my life in so I feel absorbed within you the love that I think I mean I know myself as a winterton. We're proud to have you kind of coming out of here. We're claiming you for sure And we we just really appreciate you coming on the podcast man Good luck on the next round of American idol and moving forward in your career and then hopefully maybe post American idol or a few months or few years..

"For important. What is a habit that you've developed over the past few years that's most improved your life a have that I saw Other than flowing down when I load the dishwasher because my husband says that I absolutely do not know how to loaded dishwashers. Go back I I don't know if it counts as a habit or not but for many many years I've been working out regularly and that's Partly because I have I was born with a back condition. That's that's meant that you know if I don't if I don't eat working at strengthening muscles and working on my coordination and all that there's a chance that that could just degrade to the point that I would lose it so So it's it's it's important that made you know even though it hurt you keep working out. Yeah that makes sense. You're cutting out just a little bit better. Yep you're good so now I just have a couple more questions and these are just kind of about Wichita so work having lived here for a little while you probably get answers What is your favorite part of Wichita? Or what is a a hidden? Gem would recommend to people. Oh Boy My favorite part of Wichita is that we are a well kept secret. You know it's like we're we're pretty good sized city that the other parts of the country discount. But you know it's like the cost of living here is really reasonable enough sophistication. We're just about anybody and It's It's it's kind of Nice that the rest of the world thinks we're Hick because they're not. They're not clamoring to here. Like I said I used to live in Colorado Clamor. To get everything is way too expensive and too many people so yeah so just just right and There's there's a little French restaurant on central called Georgia's fabulous. You know it. It looked at the food grade and Freddie. It feels like you're you're on a sidewalk cafe in peril. Sure my my brother and his girlfriend. They got done travelling the world for a year and She's actually from France and so they went there and kind of had a big three course meal and everything and they both said that's one of the best restaurants they've been to in any of the world so really yeah. It's one of our favorites. There's a there's a boutique that I admit that I am just a sucker for It's called Kaelin. It's on the west side and so I'm in there at least once a month. 'cause I'M A sucker for their loyalty program and the Daf they're one and I love clothes and my husband says I have too many of them but you know how can no I never have enough to where fuck GONNA help tonight. That's how it goes sometimes. Is there anything that you wish which had that? It doesn't or what would you improve about which you could if we were a better draw for performing arts you know. I think that her with interesting arena But sometimes we to get passed over by performing artists. That might you know it'd make it really.

I have a little bit of everything. Sure sure yeah. Yeah very cool. That's awesome so what kind of advice would you have for kids in Wichita that I mean either have doesn't have to be sports related a big dream or even just dream of going to college in playing sports or anything like that. What kind of advice would you offer them? Come out which is a good question Honestly I guess I'll tell them that everybody's process everybody structure every everybody. Your body handles things and industrial differently. don't look at my story and think that there's only one way of doing something you mean because I say okay. Yeah well they went to this school and they went to this college okay. What if I don't do that you didn't move so Everybody Wassall before me. We like Cameron will win. Florida state. Elber Matt Going to Troy. Everybody's process was different. And I guess what I'll tell them as you have steak uncchildrens process and yet understand your vision. What you want accomplish and yet stay true to the Even when There's obstacles have fallen away that may push you in made eight like a take you off track. You have to keep on going in the direction that you intend it because there's always going to be some type of roadblock there's always gonNa people don't you. I know there's always going to be a thought. This was not tony but it's not an US got keep on going. You gotta find a way to make yourself who you set out to be. Hopefully listen to this She texted me a picture of like a trolley that she saw rolling around Nebraska. She lives up in Nebraska Ruskin and it was a food truck trolley and I'm like that is literally on brand like so far trust so my dad's I showed him the picture and he like freaked out and and he starts finding trolleys secondhand and he's really good at that stuff so he found one in West Palm Beach Florida and we literally truck to hear sure so store right now and it just at our store and we have to outfit which will be expensive and time consuming but we have it purchase so that'll be really cool. I'm thinking wichitas. Such a good city for food trucks really is the water walked by those high. They have like a little food the truck deal every now and then once a month or so wichita stay and we already worked with Wichita state so I'm hoping hopefully we can get in their food truck laws. They're really cool. That's exciting just just like concerts river fest. Hopefully I mean I just think it's such a great city for it that we can make even run at like five days a week and it can be like our third store outlive for now because yeah. I can't do anything I've seen his every river fest cards with his bare hands to he loves building things so engineers project yeah for sure said it's GonNa be fun. That'd be cool. I mean even down the road. If you guys I mean go head to head with Garrett's or somebody like that so yeah that would be awesome bigger brand or something to send the Oprah. I think is how you do it yeah. I don't know how to do that but that would be a good way to try taste testers or something make sure we'll Zach. That's a good idea though so. Let's see here so you guys have popcorn. What else do you guys offer so I know back in the day was popcorn. Rice crispy treats they have the popcorn balls classic kind of slushy and that eventually budgen. So how else have you guys. The slushy were so fun but I was like Oh then kept blake leaking everywhere and they were loud and killed need to get rid of those but just having they were older machines because they opened with us so I was like I don't want to buy another. They're going to be twenty five thousand dollars for a and I'm like my dad kept fixing it and like bless his heart it. It was like they had to go job. Yes and just sticky messes everywhere so I was like what can we do that would be more like on brand with old fashioned yeah yeah and so we came up with the fresh squeezed lemonade so that's been kind of popular for Spring and summer and then in the winter we do like a hot cocoa and hot outsider bar out there toppings but we still do the popcorn balls the rice krispies all the popcorn flavors a lot of them and then and we never did butter did that ever to you but we never did butter vicks people that I think people think see the popcorn and like movie popcorn. It's like oh yeah butter before about. I was like I'm gonNA try butter. I honestly didn't know how to do it because we never did. We're just big yes on so we started popping it with the butter oil and the butter salt with it and butters like one of our best sellers are now which makes Rosecran why it took so long. I think I was like three years in bizarre even thought of that. They want one butter so we'll do it and then we I also do fudge so budgets like I'm trying to grow our fudge line a little bit more right now. My mom makes all Phyllis. She's shoutout to sell his shutout and she she wraps each square quarter pounds so they can just grab and go. That's awesome yeah so that's kind of a fun line for her and keeps her very busy. Yeah who takes slot effort Ashley with a variety of flavors so we like to be creative way to so you guys did come across. I don't know if there's a challenge and I don't know the full story about not in. I'm sure there's some politics of or something but moving down the road central to your new location. How is that process difficult yes that was probably my biggest biggest occupational struggle sewer hitting our five year mark in October and out of the whole five years has been the hardest moment for me. so we had come off are really high high of you know deciding to keep our west location and that was so January of two thousand seventeen hit we had just done the two stores went out. East or one over went out West and we were so excited because we're like that was such hard work building that store where keeping it like twenty seventeen going to be a year where we can just chill and fine tune the brand and take not take time off really can't take a lot of time off when you own a business but we were just planning on like a low key year twenty seventeen well. We got a notification from our basically our landlord had told us we want to move a national national chain into your andover store and they'll be next door to you and I'm thinking that's awesome like the only nothing's been there since dollar general moved how they built like their own store and handover and so it's kind of just been vacant. They're like W so cool to have a neighbor and this will be great. Bring more people are way and and and we had just kind of used paid them like a little bit for the holiday storage to use vacant space so I was like. Oh that'll kind of be a bummer. We won't get that extra what we call it our Warehouse Your House but Mike Darn will lose our warehouse but hey it'll be worth it. During the slow times of the year tavern neighbor will then they said well. We're going to take half of your square footage to do that and I was like. Oh my like that's not gonNA happen. turns out and this is like lesson. Everybody learns when they everyone learns lessons when they own a business but I had signed so your parents had expanded. I WANNA say almost a quarter almost half of what their original expanded out of the other room and then so when I bought the assets and everything that room was part of it will then after that I had expanded ended. I WanNa say another eight hundred square feet after that so we had a huge space and he ended his Buji. It was awesome like we had this was was really enjoyed. I love it is perfect. We just you know needed to build the traffic up so that was always going to be like our flagship location. We had not exactly the way we want into well. When I expanded after your parents expansion I had signed a month to month lease on that and I guess fully grasping that I I didn't really understand at the time of year I was doing so they said well. We're taking that because of your month-to-month so obviously that's going to go away. They can do whatever they want and then they're like. We'd like to make even take the part that your parents had expanded to to make it an even space for them and I was like well. How can you take that unlike wolves your three year leases up for negotiation at your three and I'm like oh my gosh like so in my mind it had been there since high school board ornament popcorn.

"I think in college like being especially in engineering school. I think everybody thinks they have that idea or they see something that comes out example for Uber. I thought about that five years ago. It's like okay. It's an idea versus execution and so that's something I wanted wanted to bring up to. Is this your thoughts on. What's the value of an idea versus something else we we would get messages all the time on that. I thought of this five years ago fantastic tactic. You didn't do anything with it. There's a big big difference between having an idea executed executing an idea and that's where we kind of shine was proving that we could execute on a plan an idea and the Uber for lawn care to back up an answer that that original question rush you. I actually hated it but people kept drawing that connection and so it kind of stuck especially in the beginning for the homeowner facing side died as far as they could connect with homeowner and have lawn care at the press of a button sure to where even now people still will reference that aspect. It's not necessarily what we do. It's a very small aspect of our technology on but we're not the ones cutting grass. We're not the ones that the homeowners are not. Our customers merged the lawn care companies so yeah. That's not something that I would necessarily think about off the topic but I think when I heard about somebody was a couple years ago. Now I first time what other maybe probably when you wanNA competition honestly and I'm just like that's a cool idea but like I don't know if I would use it but just seeing what it's grown into seeing being. It's not just like you said for the customer but for the back end and how that's all that's pretty cool and that's our our sole focus now to where homeowners we we have we try tried to limit our interaction with them to just support longhair companies and when we we kind of pivoted to that we call it the Robin Hood Effect Right and so on the rich just to give the poor right and typically GIG economy. You have the technology company utilizing a contractor to generate profits where we put the essentially give that contract or the same tools technology company has to grow their business and then we take that investment in being their technology partner and then benefiting from their successor so getting to that is that how you guys make money you just take x percent of your transaction yeah so we we we get paid when the when our customers get paid and we also have a paid subscription one where they can unlock a little bit more tools but primarily our customer. Moore bases in what we call somebody light which is the transaction based model okay awesome so did you jump jump straight into it. Once you met failed you jump straight in. Was this what you're doing full-time or what was that process like by the time. I feel I had jumped in time. It was still attending a couple classes at which state that kind of fizzled out but the I left my job. maybe a month or two prior to two meeting. Phil and decided to focus on that full-time just based off the the positive feedback from the the idea idea and then also generating income from business model competitions like that so decided to make the leap it was it was I was fortunate in the fact that my my wife helps support that yeah and obviously had a very good job and benefits so I was very blessed in that aspect yeah that's helpful. That's really cool did did so from that lunch. re-met fell. There's autumn enters. There are a lot of other which based entrepreneurs how has that helped you think the outcome would have been different here had had you not had kind of that support group or was or support group moving forward from that group so there was a support group from then group of people that were at the table. I I mean trevor has been a personal friend of Mine and peer and mentor for for a long time if he listen to this and I call him a mentor. I'm never gonNA hear the end of the so from that that table there was a little bit of a support court system built in but from the university is really received a lot of support and then when the university partnered with E for launch prep and we we were the first inaugural company through that and so we were received support there but as far as the city or anything else like that yeah no not really even to this day that he doesn't necessarily support or no that we exist the the county does Sedgwick County they supported us and then we got several mentors ores from connections made in the in the city so mark Twain Line with the Worst University in their entrepreneurship department in Nancy Curson Awesome Brock they were there since day one helping us go through modeling and business model canvas and then that grew to broaden our network with other connections and and then through the e W partnership and their mentor pooled air and now I'm in a program called pipeline which is kind of a national OKLAHOM- deal. They focus on the mid West but with that those connections is just mind blowing yeah. I'm the amount of talent is in one room so that's awesome is there a specific civic part of the business that they help with as part of like pipeline for example yes so pipeline focuses on the CEO specific the executives in the founder and and helping to go through all the different strategies and It's really kind of like it's a family but it's a family. Emma educates you in how to be successful entrepreneur and also navigate lessons learned or or failure right and that's fantastic the support and the the network and the the knowledge that comes through that that program is nothing like I've ever seen before. That's really cool. Was it difficult when you brought Phil. On for example and you obviously don't have to get into details or anything but is it difficult to try to figure out instead of contracting it out to bring him in trying to split up the equity in the company or however that works this so luckily it wasn't necessarily that difficult we met several times before he came on board and several times to make sure it was the right fit and like I said our our personalities. Mesh really well and we were able to work together. I mean we've navigated over three years together to to where we are today. through ups and downs it's really easy to focus on the outs but no one necessarily sees the downs when you're in the office or on weekends putting in the work and the blood sweat and tears that go into but we've been able to navigate that pretty well. That's not the case for for everyone. I definitely think that based off of our our area finding a a CTO or technical co founder that has a background in the industry will be hard to find for that level doesn't mean it's impossible. It just means there'll be a little bit more due diligence on that yeah founders part if they don't have a technical background sure we're you set out to find somebody with that that experience like when you're across you kind of said it contract somebody out but here's looking for somebody that could coat it for you then so at the time. I was looking looking for someone to help come in and make an MVP. I would find gotta come in to help us. Grow makes sense. I'm where I was fortunate is that he was one of the only people who he he was. He had his own business he was doing it was just himself. Everything kind of aligned to where best possible scenario occurred heard for us and he was able to join the team cool very cool. Was it so kind of investment type side of things. Did you have many investors upfront or how did that. Process go yeah so we had a core group of investors come on really right before we launched watch the the MVP in the wintertime some great folks like Jeff Turner Aaron Bastion Jason Cox and Ben Hutton where some of I folks in came to to help support us in our idea which for helping move which along that's I mean that's and they're all Chubb as always all of our investors including new ones are all which is so the they've helped spur along technology right here in Wichita Kansas which not a lot of people people can say yeah. That's actually gained traction. Someone who yeah it's it's a very fortunate that they stepped up at the time of the. I'm glad to see those groups. I mean like that group and like you even starting lawn buddy here to see pushing in Wichita forward. A lot of people move away from Wichita to do something cool like this but there's a lot of people like you guys trying to do right here and Wichita when I look at it. It's it's almost like its own company right so it's going to go through ups and downs. We're GONNA purge talent but hopefully there's GonNa be some ups for us or you can retain it and continue to grow the environment and we're just here to keep our heads down and hopefully be value added to our our city where we can help a little part in pushing forward yeah for sure how has lawn. Betty volved besides from your website that you made to what it is today. What what do anything specific or specific lessons learned yeah so from the horrible. Go Daddy website that I built in two thousand fifteen. It was uh we've evolved a lot so we went from just being a single APP on West android tour. Now we have four APPs on Iowa's android. We have a a a a web portal for the providers to to run their their businesses tore. It's really evolved to a high technology company in the SAS arena and I mean we won top one hundred twenty five companies in the world by startup grind which is a Google Council credible and that was from right here in in in Wichita in the world so that's a recognition for us and something that we're we're really proud of and that's all due to this team that we have here as far as evolving employees went from villain I in a in a dungy attic to now we have about six employees and almost over eight contractors working for the company. Foale time so we're generating jobs right here in Wichita hour-long buddy but not only that providers that have used our technologies since the beginning are now hiring employees because they've two to three reacts our business so huge value add for our community there in the evolution of Blonde Buddy he ever sure and one of the things Islambad can do is like automatically calculates the lawn based on where the driveway is like how much dry takes up and that kind of thing automatic pricing was that something that kind of came later was up there from the beginning so that was actually there from the beginning so the automatic pricing came in to where we pull data from a couple different records to give a virtual virtual estimate almost instantly I actually there's instantly unless it falls outside of some of our parameters and then kicks out to a manual review but that was in there for since the beginning kind of evolved from that was being able to give the lawn care companies the ability to add their own prices and then have advanced danced estimating tools like but we had where they have satellite images that they can go and trace projects. They're doing whether they're installing a new garden or concrete or putting mulch and we we get 'em tool so that they can electronically calculate that and then senator customers very cool in how do you market this. I know because I mean it's like you said even in Wichita people even know about Lombady necessarily compared to the population everything. How do you mark that. I've been seeing stuff on facebook and some other things that was really awesome hard. You've been handling that. Yes Oh it's all strictly digital now so social media's a huge win for us Google ad words huge for us as well but then word of mouth. I always say that our best salesperson is a happy customer so that one happy customer is going to talk to their our friends about their experience with our software and how it helped their companies and that's been one of the ways that we've been able to grow our digital footprint is really kind of where we focus for marketing a lot of these men and women are living inside of forums or on facebook group yeah and with some of the tools we can really refine our audience since two where we can get our ads to display the right folks unless they follow our pages and you're going to solve our content but that's primarily how we get the word out. Do you have a specific perfect person or group of people that just focuses on that tech advertising marketing yes so our marketing advertising all actually outsource by our because some of our contractors that we have we have a gal in San Francisco Name Laura Jordan who does a fantastic job for us as far as ad placement placement and then strategic branding making sure that everything's the same and delivering to the right audience and.

"A business this strategist helping entrepreneurs in the Wichita area. She is the founder of the HIVE which is a co working space and a community with a focus on women enjoy my conversation with Andrea driest. Stay right. I'm here with Andrea staying. How're you doing today. Good how are you. I'm doing well. Thanks for having me absolutely Can you just tell the listeners a little bit about yourself. Well I was born and raised in Wichita and I am the founder of the hive. It's a women focused co working in communities face awesome very cool so how were which did you grow up in. I grew up in Al Past Goddard into aviation community out there cool awesome so just to get into the high of a little bit is so what is the height I guess can you go into that a little bit so we're essentially a space offer support for small business owners community for professionals channels. We like to say that we give permission to women to be seen to be known it's a space for leaders to connect and empower one another and help them succeed faster during their careers and lives awesome so is this your first. I don't know quote startup. What what's your background in that Gosh well. I come from a long line of entrepreneurs. If you know my maiden name you know that I'm the granddaughter of Don Hatton of Dot hat and Chevrolet Eighth my parents also own a used car dealership in so I come from a long Gaunter preneurs third generation entrepreneur that I know of. I'm sure there were more but essentially I've always kind of had a business up my sleeve. When I was little Oh my brother and I had a pet detective business and the neighbor even paid us to find her cat caller which later I found out she was hiding for us. I in high school I I did photography senior photography might for my friends and that turned into a business doing wedding photographer my ex husband and I did elopement he would marry them and and I would do the photography so I've had a few different businesses. I also did freelance writing on the side. I've always said the best way to keep the gaps out of of your resume is to own your own business. Even if it's a side hustle and you always have something to put on your resume. That's really cool. It's really cool so that obviously had a big influence being the granddaughter of John. Hadn't had a pretty cool so the hi. How did you get the idea for the high of what was the final straw that broke the camel's back to get the start or did you always want to or well. I had had I'd love. I'd love the ideas co working spaces. I lived in Dallas. List in Austin and Lexington Kentucky had seen a few different ones and had really enjoyed concepts but I always had a young daughter in daycare was very expensive expensive in other cities that we lived and so moving back to Wichita daycare wasn't as much of a problem I was able to send her to fulltime daycare and so when I went fulltime freelance glance on my own I knew I was gonNA feel isolated and so I went to work at a local co working space and I was really happy that they had brought the concept of Wichita and we're innovating meeting in that but I just flat out say with my marketing background. I wasn't their target market. it was a predominantly men in the tech industry and the space was just it was is just not inspiring to me and so I was part of a group called lean an and kind of based on the concept of the book by Sheryl Sandberg Zero Facebook facebook and Lena Leinen circles pops up all around the country to help inspire women professionals to help them get past that gender wage gap to advocate for themselves else to be assertive without being overly aggressive things like that in business so I brought the idea to them. I kind of had that iconic onic statement that most entrepreneurs make which is wouldn't it be great if and mine was wouldn't it be great if there was a space that was more women focused okay that had you know really inspiring decor that was nice and bright and beautiful and that you felt comfortable bringing clients to that looked professional and we also had more of a community element to it so the community membership was kind of then formed as part of that idea you know there's other big spaces around the the country some that are women exclusive where women focused. We're not willing exclusive. We do have men that are members but these other cities were doing really cool. Things and I just knew that we had the capacity could do it here in Wichita very cool very cool and just take a quick step back so co working space I've kind of heard of them. I've never really worked in them but I guess where does that idea come from it's usually they like most things started on the east coast and the West Coast there were a lot of jobs that were transitioning to remote people could work from on their laptops anywhere in the world and so everybody at first is like Oh yes they can work from home and my pj than it sounds really wonderful and then you get home and there's dishes and laundry and kids in dogs and all the distractions and a lot of people can think into depression and they're just not as focused they miss having those water cooler conversations they miss having co workers and so that's when the concept of Co working came about you know you pay a monthly membership and you can come to a space and work from there being around other people who are also working from home only working from your space now and that's kind of what the initial start of it was is women. Who are you know have the flexible work schedules it really has grown to be more even women who have brick and mortars so one of our members is stacy were Latin from the hoppy nome so she owns a brick and mortar business is the thriving business off Douglas but she can't get work done there. She can't get computer worked on their You know everybody's wanting to collaborate with her and Oliver Employees are asking in her questions and the customers are wanting to socialize with her and so this is kind of her safe haven shh don't tell anybody but that's where you can find stacy but she also runs a podcast here sealing breakers and with Rene Dot flair and so it's been fun Avenue even further women who have brick and mortar is to have memberships here. One of the questions I was going to ask is it. A lot of freelance started people or pretty good balance between that and brick and mortar. Oh my gosh we have members in literally every different industry I mccosh. We've got interior designers. We've got a lot of coaches. We've got a few people that own boutiques around town apricot lane mocks either either both members campion. Patty we have. Let's see we have a plumber. We have a lot of service industry businesses but there are some that are product-based we are. We are a direct sales friendly face. Not a lot of entrepreneurial spaces are but because we are women unfocused we realized that's part of a woman's journey sometimes and they the the women who are members who are in direct sales. They own their own business. A lot of them have their own name to it. That's it's two separate from the direct sales so we're not we're not afraid of that and we're all about empowering women in whatever it is that they want to be a leader in so about fifty percent of our members members aren't even entrepreneurs. They actually work at other companies around town everything from w she tech. Martin Pringle has a corporate membership with us where they have all twelve of their female attorneys as HIVE members interest bank has a corporate membership with us and a lot of people around town their employers pay for their memberships to be a community member because you're actually getting they're getting value. They're getting content content. They can come back and then apply in a marketing role at company or you know we do lunch and learns ranging from business tips and finances to digital digital marketing everything from instagram to facebook to YouTube all of that as well as you know personal style tips in we keep it finding engaging the hive actually we stand for a lot of people don't know this it stands for healthy inspired valued and empowered and so all of our content falls into you one of those values as well. That's not listed for them. That's cool and it's I think it's really good idea for the corporate. I mean they're gonNA get a lot more benefit than probably whatever they're paying for the membership. Um just collaborating with a lot of other like minded women in just people in general I mean people go to all the different networking groups in town because they want to a lot of businesses work with entrepreneurs. You know they say okay as an entrepreneur. You need your lawyer. Your accounting your banker. there these key partnerships initiative in relationships that you need to build and these you know they're going to these networking groups to meet entrepreneurs and so this is a space where there's you know in in the world of business. There's a lot of get togethers four entrepreneurs and there's a lot of get togethers for professionals but there's not a lot of organizations combining. The two that we really do that we combine really any woman who is a leader or wants to be a leader is welcome here. Most powerful has really cool so do you do a lot of the people in town already know about you. You're do you do any advertising to try to get members. Most of it happened by word of mouth. you know what they say is behind. Every successful successful woman is a tribe of other successful women who have her back now. We like to turn tribe into hive but really it's been my hive that that talks about me and occasionally. I'll even see people who I haven't even met saying. Have you checked out the hive and I'm like well. I need to meet you because you're promoting me and I don't even know yet. I think most people I meet eight nowadays who were involved in business and entrepreneurial word world in Wichita. I put my hand out. I say hi I'm Andrea staying and they say Andrew Guessing from the hive. I know who you are. I know what the high of is so. A lot of people have the surface knowledge of it right now. A lot of people still think well. I don't need that. I don't need a space to work from or you know. I don't have time to come to every one of your events. that's not really the whole of what we do so really it is having over now over one hundred hundred seventy women leaders who have your back and so one of the most powerful uses of the network. I've seen is layup from the Greater Wichita Partnership. She joined the high when they were building their new website and she literally sourced almost all of her models for the video and photography from our hive membership. I bet she would pop in there and say hey. I'm needing a model for tomorrow to pretend like they're looking at an apartment in Wichita and we'll take pictures video and oh you got somebody from the high. you know everybody's like. Oh you need sucked so and so so and so can do it for you. I'm looking for a real estate agent to show that people house that kind of thing or maybe maybe you're saying hey..
