Call me 316869 13 30. Our studio lines are open so on a recent podcast episode titled The Gift of Girlfriends. Former first lady Michelle Obama stated that white people either don't acknowledge black people exist or they see them as a threat. When the girls were little. This is when I was first lady. I am Michelle Obama, the first lady of the United States of America of America, and we had just finished the taking The girls to a soccer game. We were stopping to get ice cream. And I had told the Secret Service to stand back because we were trying to be normal. Trying to go in. It was Haagen Daz wasn't exactly And there was a line and once again when I'm a just a black woman. I noticed the white people don't even see me. They're not even looking at me. So I'm standing there with two little black girls, another black female adult there in soccer uniforms and a white woman cuts right in front of us tow order. Like she didn't even see us. And the girl behind the counter almost took her order. And I had to stand up because I know Daniel was like, Well, I'm not going to cause a scene with Michelle Obama. That's exactly right. I was like But just so I stepped up and I said Excuse me as if you don't see us for people standing right here. You just jumped in line. She didn't apologize. She'd never looked me in my eye. She didn't know what was me. All she saw was a black person or a group of black people. Or maybe she didn't even see that because we were that invisible. I can tell you a number of stories like that when I have been completely incognito during the eight years in the White House, walking the dogs on the people will come up and pet my dogs but will not look me in the eye. They don't know it's me. And it's You know what white folks don't understand. It's like that that isthe so telling of how White America views people, but we're not like them. You know we don't exist, and when we do exist, we exist as a threat and that that's exhausting. Lucky. There's so much to unpack here, and frankly, I think the bulk of it is probably Bull pucky. Um I don't think there was any time that Michelle Obama was recognized. Nor was there a time that she was at a Haagen does where she wasn't surrounded by Secret service. But the former first lady went on to say this is what the white community doesn't understand about. Being a person of color E is that there are daily slights in our workplaces where people talk over you or don't even see you. You know, I guarantee you Michelle Obama has never been in a position where she lets herself not be seen. Um And you know, the sad part here is Am I wrong here, folks, But she is taking the actions of a few rude If this story is true, she's taken the actions here of a few rude or inconsiderate people and labeling. The entire white race based on the actions of those few And isn't that what everyone blames white people for doing? This is the same entitled woman who said Back in 2008. For the first time in my life, I'm proud of my country. Now that her husband was in power. This is a self righteous, overly indulgent racist. It was completely out of touch with mainstream America. I don't know. I mean, maybe I'm wrong. You guys tell me you 316869 13 30, speaking of self righteous, overly indulgent people who were out of touch. Fish. You're on the line. You wanted to talk about Joe Biden. There's a self untouched self right. Just overly indulgent person as well. Fish. You want to talk about Jo? What's up with sleepy Joe Long? You know what? They're going again? Way meeting hugging her. Really? I can hardly understand you Jar fish for you. If you're wearing a mask wound no. There that's better. Okay, well, angle and angle, But anyway, both of them I don't know where they grew up. Are you still there? Yeah. Yeah, we hear you where they grow up. I grew up in the sixties, man. We never had this kind of problem and remember, we had blazing saddled in 74. Well, you know, it's on. It just seems to me that people are overly sensitive. You know, my mother always used to say, Don't take offence where offense isn't meant, And I think that's the biggest issue that I see in things like this incident here. If she's describing the situation accurately, let's let's assume that she is And let's assume that this person cut in front of her the way that she did. Okay. Don't take offence. You just say Pardon me. I was in line and you move on. You know, it's not that big a deal. You don't take great offence. It doesn't mean that the lady who cut in front of her is a racist. I don't know. Maybe I'm wrong here. But, Connie, you're on the line. You You let me know is fish right? Or am I right? Am I wrong? Here is Michelle Obama. Totally, you know, Is she right? Unjustified and feeling like we're all a bunch of white Racists. Well, to me, it sounds like he's saying all white people are Racists, and it just kind of kicks me off and Why'd I think it's totally wrong on her part and everybody? You know, Some people are just blind to anybody else being around. It doesn't matter what color they are. Some people are just entitled and think, you know, I don't have to wait for anybody else. I'm gonna pass everybody in this line. I don't care what color they are who they are nothing. So I don't think it was any big deal and if it did happen I can't believe it because nobody would not know Michelle Obama. I'm sorry. No, especially while her husband was in the White House. Yeah, well, for the last 10 years, everybody knew who Michelle Obama was. I mean, really, You know, you're right. I just died just taking both that I'm sorry..

Do you know how to coach?
"All right for this week's episode. I WanNa Talk About Coaching No. I didn't talk telling your employees what to do. I said I'm talking about coaching. That's right they aren't the same thing although to me it is out. There think they are. If your idea of good. Coaching is advice oriented. Meaning use phrases. Like I do this or try this instead. You're definitely teaching. And depending on the person in your relationship with them. It might actually yield some results but real coaching leads employees and peers to figure out their own solutions rather than offering solutions for them. Sir John Whitmore Renown Executive Coach and author wrote in his book. Coaching for performance that Real coaching unlocks a person's potential to maximize their own performance. It helps them learn rather than teaching them. Which is what we all want anyway to get where we need to go as close to honor road as possible to be led and not pushed to decide for ourselves rather than having the decision made for us. Teaching is important and it's necessary but it should be reserved for actual objective skills where the teacher is universally recognized expert in most organizations. The vast majority of coaching opportunities don't fall under this umbrella. In most cases the skills being taught are subjective in nature they have multiple correct answers or the invite people to put their own spin on the execution. I know many leaders who are really good at one of these things but very few who excel both so. What are some of the attributes of good coaching listening asking questions? Empathy pointing out a person's strengths. Creating a structured environment where irrelevant noises avoided and successes more likely encouraging creation of goals and ultimately allowing you the person to find their own solution. Why does it seem to be so hard for leaders? The two primary reasons are one. It takes time to do it right. It takes time telling a person the answers quick setting the stage that allows them to figure it out on their own is often tedious work and it carries some risks that they won't figure it out and the failure reflect poorly on you as the leader. The other reason is ego. Some leaders believe that if they're people are able to solve their own problems but there won't be an obvious connection to the relevance and the importance of that leaders presence. Many of these leaders are actually really good. People that just don't live willin `ambiguities or they worry their own boss in able to see their contribution unless it's really obvious in doesn't need to be inferred improving. Your coaching skills doesn't require going back to school or months of training. But it does require a purposefulness that understands the process of learning is even more important than the skills being learned because that process makes the relationship stronger and it sets the stage for future success. The next time coaching required. Thanks for listening and have a great
Three Wins in 4 Years Is a Record
"James Good Morning. Good Morning Steve. Thanks for having me on hope your weekend. Well it did. It did and I thought I saved I wrote I write down as many selections. It's always tough for Breeders Cup because then the paper gets all gets a little a little sloppy and sure enough here. I'm looking now and yeah I do have it. Actually there we go there we go home. You were a Vino guy and and bricks and mortar and and then spun to run so yeah your share of winners Too Key around I thought was on higher power. Though I didn't have you know I got you written down for Dino. I took higher power stirred Flavian Pratt. What's up on them? I'll tell you play the Heidi wrote one favorite Donna Duluth below she. The brewers Juke juvenile given up Phillies runner-up but he had a win. had four seconds and fourth earners. I thought that was a really a great performance by him and You know he has the Kentucky Derby win on his resume junkies like have that really just A good showcase for an upcoming star in our rank agreed and and I tweeted on Sunday. I've discussed this a couple of times this week. His record is stunning. And he's got people would say. Oh He's only got three wins. WHOA WHOA three wins? Thirty eight mounts and this is only his fourth year as fourth year riding his sixteen seventeen eighteen nineteen at-bats. Ah But another fourteen in the money finishes and then a handful of fourths and fifths I mean the percentage is frightening. I mean considering considering the level of competition really outstanding and he gives he gives every virtually every horse. If he's got horse to work with he gives them a chance. It's definitely and you know I mean I think Santa Anita and hosted the Breeders Cup eight times previously and and and he was writing a lot of california-based debased horses and one of my takeaways was definitely that this this year's Breeders Cup with completely unlike any out in California before I mean just uh-huh it just. It really started on Friday where the first four winners had all raised it Aqueduct Belmont and by the end of it I'm you know I'm looking at it it it. If you'd looked at the charts that Saturday at at Saratoga you wouldn't be surprised to see our ad or ts in four races Castellano and Rosario win into each and then Jose or ts Manny Frank Ricardo Santana All winner races well and Joe Bravo and that's what happened. They took twelve to fourteen races and and all twelve of those horses that race in New York this year now very strong on that on that front and ah not to say that Just had the conversation with Nick. Lock about the euro's and there were there were solid efforts and solid board hits in addition to Iridescence win but The you know the and there were solid performances from west coast sources to bell. Athena's Bella Fina. At under under certain circumstances dances might have won. The united almost looked like a winner hundred yards from the wire There were there were plenty of of solid performances from every region In some cases. Look at Vino. Vino having been into California. I think counselor a lot. You fold in folding would ask. Did you know getting there early with Matali Actually Navarro to I mean in Navarro got there early with a chance. A Lot A lot of times the a Lotta Times. The juvenile turf sprang can be like locally based sources can do all your top two in that race were both based in California with Peter Miller and you the one hundred and thirty five bucks. That's right that's right. That's right his second his second in the race in three years. I'm just looking at the list to spun to run from Philadelphia. So you get you get a a regional kind of a B.. Track player are sharing sharing holiday for new. New York's thunder run actually ran in a mate. Nice at act backer. And the winner but I mean the parks and mom Sharing base at Far Hills at far hell and Maryland bred. That's a couple of times Toga. Yeah yeah everybody everybody got their Lixin. Actually when you when you kind of go through this And I'll just say I I came away. I mean granted. I thought the four big stars coming into enforces with the serious horsey. Our aspirations Bricks Mourner Corner Sister Charlie and Matola two of the four one I think it really does come down horse a year two bricks and mortar and Matola Louis. But I'm giving the edge bricks mortar. I thought it was fantastic campaign. He had been a mile or previously. Before you know getting hurt and undergoing that surgery and I like the fact that Brad Cox I mean Brown ran him. You know he never ran he. Random and six different courses six different states. You went from Florida to Louisiana to Kentucky Hockey to New York to Illinois and the California To win a mile and a half for the first time in his career so to me. He's a deserving of the year well and and driving home the point about the mile and a half for people that because they always beat all the same types and didn't stretch himself then no he did and and you know the there was even people that were incredulous about him going the mile and a half so you know that that score extra points Without a doubt yeah definitely and you know to me One of the Mike Smith that made the point After a couple Oh. He ran second on a pair of privet favorites midnight zoo in Omaha Beach. And he's made the point that he'd right like those races back because it was hard to 'cause over that track track but to me it was more so that those horses were caned on the rail going into the first turn. Blue Prize was tenth early. You know tolley Holy Arosa could be five or six minutes off the pace. But they're jocks really at. That did a great job keeping them in the clear and I really thought midnight. These to you You know continue just to be in traffic through into the far turn. And when she got out she finished great as a case I mean they the great job on on TV and other highlighting it where I think of a blueprint. It's got the jump on her because of the trip the greed and it and it it also. It should be noted for people that are you know insisting that the track nobody could close well. WHOA that's not true? which is simply me? Just look at the chart for the distaff. What do you mean nobody could close at that? Just you know Omaha. Beach closed closed In in as well came from often and others whitmore made up. I mean it wasn't going to get to the winners and the the exact pair But he closed Idiom really had down below chicken that juvenile fillies and that's when the track was absolutely at its worst deepest pissed most impossible right based on based on the figure and in fact. It's funny because yesterday. Paul Matisse was talking about how difficult Friday was to make figures and then it was echoed by Jerry Brown on His On his experts board board. Somebody brought up. Paul's conversation and Jerry also echoed that the way the track changed from the you know the middle part of the day to by the time even the the juvenile boys ran so typically you would if the juvenile of the males run more than two seconds faster than the phillies. You'll get say their way better than the nose Philly but I do think it was. It was a track getting off faster later. And I. I'm I'm not down on British idiom or Donna Boise at all even though that right they came home. I think they should be still terrific runners. And you know it's it's hard to gauge coming out of the juvenile being real adobe guy Exactly what that means going forward so into court definitely Nice Horse Court Vision You know hasn't isn't had much success at Stud but he's bread You know fire. Classic types with that pedigree of his female family has a lot of stamina influences. It just doesn't have much class. You won't find any stakes winners really in that immediate female family well your final the final takeaways. My final take away so I just you know I you know I was. I thought you know it was a tragic end McGowan crew. I mean it was just a Really hurt to see that happy at the very end After a thirteen of the Breeders Cup races have that happened in the ashtray and and racing. Definitely I think has some issues and concerns going forward. the people in the industry maybe do a better job messaging but I still remain. Optimistic is the horserace fan about the future and I was. I came away like in the Breeders Cup. I thought there was some great performances and Looking for work once again the next year very good well. We're looking forward to the action this weekend give us some thoughts about Churchill had terrific card even today yesterday and Wednesday were good and of course the Commonwealth on Saturday the feature the Grade Three Mile and a sixteenth. The three year olds on the grass. It is an absolute war. Some thoughts about what's been going on while everybody was paying attention to Breeders Cup and and we got to look forward to this weekend. Yeah they had three stakes last week and In the MEA mischief flatmate go for the sale and and look good. She loves Churchill Downs Multiple Grade. One winner there in the Divine Queen got off to bad start. Art Never Fire in the In Saturday stakes chill Lewke and Sally's Kirwin breakers Swin She tried the Indiana Oaks folks earlier. This year didn't run good for Dale Romans. But she had one or last two allowance races by like about fifteen lenz combined and ran a rug. Good Rice debris greet Brian Cox's

Jose Ortiz Interview - October
"Welcoming Jose Ortiz who is a native of Puerto Rico and his one more than nineteen hundred races in what has been just a a stellar career and that career still going strong and he's with me now here on H. R. N. Jose Good Morning My friend Mike give having yeah. Thanks for taking a little time. I know you're a busy working horses. This morning. Never ends does it does not if you want to be the best which right now you certainly are my friend Brendan. You know it's interesting. I mentioned being a native of Puerto Rico one of the jockeys who mentored you when you came here and one of the people that you looked up to is his hall of Famer Johnny Velazquez who last week set the record for most greatest stakes victories by jockey in the history of the sport and that has to make you very proud. I know that yeah yeah we are happy about it and it keeps going throwing you know hopefully he can give winning some more on winning out much again until you know until heater dyers what makes him so good then you got a lot of these. Atlanta for the sport and I think that having taken to the next level where he's been for awhile you know yeah he certainly he's been doing it for a long time and still doing it at a very high level. How many great stakes victories are you behind him now. I don't know I have made the way to go yeah one day well that win yesterday and the Phoenix was impressive. This is a horse. You've you've been on before you knew him. You get back aboard him yesterday and he's able to hold off Whitmore who was putting in that late run. Take me through the race Jose. Well we broke. We broke very good. expect expecting a much faster pace but they did in in came out of five dollars. I thought they would and I was able to be closer than I than I thought. I was going in two weeks so I think that well We have a very pain trip when I ask him to. Well what they're for me the whole time. You know he's a horse worse by intimacy if that when you were riding him last year and even this year at Saratoga he was trained by Chad Brown now he's trained by Steve Asmussen. Ah when you were riding him before he was always knocking on the door but he couldn't quite get past horses like promises fulfilled you yesterday you beat him and everybody everybody else. Is there a difference. Did you feel something different now with engage than you did last year. He always been a ah very nice or worse. I think some more mature before others on. I think he'd take a while but I think he finally figured out you know. Did you know that Moore was gaining on your yesterday. I didn't knew what Whitmore Kabaya fell somebody coming out. You can tell yeah I could yeah. Did you know you had enough left in the tank. He very game he always has been and I knew what GonNa try but you know something this all horrors you know he's just turned four so there's all live orders season and they are very good. You know they they come in. They coming at you like wait Marino. He's very nice or you know that win. In the Phoenix was part of a Multi Win Day on opening day of Keeneland then you you've had several days in your career where you've won multiple races like that. I asked you what makes John Velazquez so good. What makes Jose Ortiz so good. I don't let somebody out of that. Answer that question. I guess right to be myself on gave that horses the best chance to win but you also worked very hard I mentioned you're out working in horses this morning. I know you're being humble and and that's what's part of makes you part of. What makes you so good but Jose you work your tail off and put me the in in the saddle with you for minute if you will if I can use that term take me through like your routine in your approach to riding races. How do you get ready to go out there. Every day and ride was everything star on the when the overnight comes up so I have to see we shorts on on quantum there I go the R F and and they got the raises and I put him whatever I think they should be and you know I have to talk to a trainers on and follow their their instructions but at the same time I want to I want her to be relax and that's that's what I try to be happy and I think they control and relaxed. We'll give you a running the end of it yeah you know. Johnny will always tell tell me about his different plans that he has going into the starting gate the plan a plan b the Plan C. and you hope you don't have to get any further than that but once the gates open you can listen to the trainers instructions all day long but once the gates open things can change quickly right very quickly. What do you you do at that point. Do you say Oh my God. I gotTa follow his instructions or do you say I just gotTa. Let my instincts takeover in and try to ride this race the way it needs to be ridden now so you've got to let your instincts they over because it's very tough to execute a plan when their plan doesn't work from from the gate you know. Yep You gotta change everything so I think you just gotTa Julia uh-huh. Yeah everything you could do everything changes in and you just have to adjust and that's why I've always said you know jockeys in terms of there's always that debate are jockeys true athletes athletes and I think you know I've said for years but pound for pound jockeys the most gifted athletes that we find in all sports and I have no doubt about it and you're certainly right there Jose. Let's talk about the horses that you're going to be aboard today. You're in all of the great stakes races at keeneland which is to be expected matter of fact. Thank you might be riding every single race at keeneland today. nice to be in demand extravagant. Kid is a horse. You're going to be aboard in the WOODFORD stakes. That's is the first greatest stakes today. What can you tell me about. Extravagant kid very nice hard. I had the opportunity to ride him. One time before and we won he's doing very good very fox. Horse doesn't need to be on the late which is very helpful full on way like junkets. Today we think is very life so right to win all right and then in the next race in the TC a talked to me and I think I'm saying that name correctly but talk to me the horse. You're going to be aboard there. You've been aboard her. The the last two starts second last time out in the Press Kyle downes master stakes on September sixteenth. Tell me a little bit about her. It's very nice to write very easy last time. She has run very very very good. we are expecting seeming to or better than last two times. I think she got shut all right and then the first lady turn our attention there you go to the first lady stakes miss bad behavior for Richard. Balta says the Horse Year aboard. What do you know about her. I won on her Kentucky Down She got some sleep but he's he's also stayed on the race so let's see how they're they're in writing about her because she he doesn't need elite. Also g come come on. We gotta go pole so let a break and make sure shade in a winning position I during your yeah how much different is writing this keeneland turf of course then of course like Kentucky Downs Kentucky down says the undulating up and down configuration. How much different is it run getting more like we do every day. You know saying Kinda you you know over same thing by Kentucky different. Go Up and down left right so I think in Kentucky and it's all about the horse like it you WanNa be okay. It doesn't like nothing you can do about like well. Let's hope that this bad behavior likes the keeneland turf course later today in the classroom breeders futurity Max Field for Brendon. Walsh is the second time that Brendan will give you a leg up in a greatest stakes today. Tell me about Max field. You went on him last time out to very nice coat a win first time out very nicely actually that day a he was a speed favor drug. Nobody was coming from behind and he did which is very impressive to me so I think we have something here. We got very nice coats so hopefully put it together and stay undefeated talk to for to all right and the last one admission office This is a horse who you road last year but haven't been on them for the last four starts you get back aboard admission office and that is in the the shad while Turf Mile. Tell me about him. What you remember about writing him before is on very cool hope to ride very easy going on to be honest? I love him. I think we had a huge show the winds along really how come because I think he's is a nice source if their truck come from behind and here something other threats you about to rush these sorts. BEC- they're stretchy short here. I wouldn't have to we go. We got our loan stretching so I think it was the drug I mean he. He did alright at one eight zero. He don't good with Y'all yup so he's got big right now. You can tell what what makes Jose Jose Ortiz so good. He knows every race that these horses have run before he gets aboard and he did indeed win. Three starts back at Keeneland in the spring which Joel Rosario Dario Award winning an allowance race getting up by neck and admission office the Horses Jose will be aboard in today's Shell Turf Mile Jose. I know it's a busy morning. I know you've got horses assist works. I won't keep you thank you so much for spending a little time. Congrats on all your success. My friend and I'll look forward to catching up with us. We make our way to Santa Anita in about a month. Mike thank you.
Poll: About a third of Americans approve of how Trump handled El Paso and Dayton shootings
"Kerry dan whether it's from history or from fiction. If if you're a student of the presidency you probably have a very good sense of how much the american psyche yearns for leadership in times of stress or national tragedy the day we celebrate that is fictional president thomas a with moore played by bill pullman in the movie independence day but in real life presidents have also all too often been called upon to make stirring speech. Is this not to fight. Aliens butts to bring together a country. That's grieving and confused often at some of the worst moments in the country's history. Remember george w bush with the bullhorn after nine eleven franklin delano roosevelt and the day that will live infamy ronald reagan after the challenger disaster faster and barack obama singing amazing grace after the charleston church shooting those are some of the few times in recent decades that partisanship has really really and truly been set almost entirely aside in our latest n._b._c. news wall street journal poll just thirty six percent of americans said they approve of president donald trump's handling of the shootings in el paso in dayton and that's not much better than he did in the wake of the pittsburgh synagogue shooting and and it's only a tiny bit better than his approval rating after hurricane maria hit puerto rico it is better than his approval rating for his handling of charlottesville arlit still only one in five americans said at the time that they approved of how trump handled the unite the right rally and the ensuing violence in charlottesville worlds fill almost exactly two years ago and here's a reminder. This is not really normal. It's not normal in american history for a president to only have a third third of americans are so approving of their reactions in the wake of a huge national events or tragedy sure i mean bush enjoyed sky-high. Hi hi approval ratings after nine eleven and almost eighty four percent of americans supported bill clinton's response to the oklahoma city bombing but also even after after hurricane katrina which is one of the most devastating parts of george w bush's presidency and one that made him particularly polarizing even after that advent still half of americans said they approved of his reaction to the hurricane at the time so trump is unusual in how americans have reacted to his response to national tragedies and when you take those numbers and you combined them with everything else that we know about public views of the president you get a very muddy muddy picture like wild majority disapproves of his handling of things like charlottesville trump is still enjoying some of the highest approval of his presidency when it comes the economy which is great news for the president but you might ask what is the most powerful thing when it comes to the two thousand twenty election what trump means jeans for americans wallets or something more holistic. That is the million dollar question but here's one clue from the data that our pollsters crunch that we noticed this weekend there are a total of nine percent of registered voters in this poll who say they like trump on the economy but they disapprove of overall for all and when those people were asked if they support trump for reelection or would rather vote for a democrat in twenty twenty three quarters said they would prefer for a democrat which is probably not great. If you're the current resident of the white house now for the record we did not aw test the favorability or any other kind of measures of president thomas a whitmore played by bill pullman independence day but i would love of deceased some head to head data with him versus the fictional presidents played by harrison ford and air force one and morgan freeman in deep impact those those would be some interesting cross tabs. People can see that you're approachable. And that you do wanna talk. I find that my friends that I'm closest you at the baseball field are ones that are very outgoing and ones that approached me. I and ones that continue to approach me that makes sense. You know, like Lee Whitmore's, always we're always chitchatting, Sarah. Anyways, there's something the other person can pick up on easily to continue the conversation. Well, I would suggest this if you are really really focused on moving in a certain direction, let's say you're trying to land that next big sale or you're trying to expand your e commerce business, or whatever it is that you do you're heading in that direction that you want to be going have a conversation starter that has something to do with where it is that you're going. So, you know, if they say, how are you today, you say man, I'm great. I just I just lost my new product on my ecommerce site, and they're gonna make oh what what are you doing? And you never know that they may have a a new manufacturing facility. They may be involved with marketing or they may who knows what that person does in their own life that they may be able to connect with you and help you expand. "To the John Whitmore show studio lines three one six eight six nine thirteen thirty with us in studio. Still is Dan Hawkins our house majority leader. I know you've you've only got a few minutes left with us. Let me ask you real briefly a little bit about the budget debate the that that long wait while they tried to extort the Senate. I mean, just I know you've done call the houses before this one was a little unique. Yeah. It was it was so we haven't had long call the houses for a long time. John you, and I have experienced some very long ones in our time. We haven't as of the last few years had more than most of the time, maybe an hour. Call the house, but this one this one was so important. We'd already win a whole day trying to break the logjam. It wasn't working. So we really needed to kind of stretch this out get get the folks a little tired, get them. Get them angry. So so you do that just by having a call the house having everybody set there during that call the housework hall and trying to get to that sixty three votes, sixty three votes. What it takes to pass anything now, and we started out at fifty seven. So when a hit when it came up fifty seven from the start we knew we had a chance at that point. That's six votes. I started working plan the speaker, and I were on the phone for two hours straight calling. I called every single one of our members, even your friend the as your safety. We used to be in the temporary act now, I have to tell you. He wouldn't take my call. So he went to answer the call I called every single person many of the many of the more moderate folks wouldn't answer their phones. But that's okay. Still made the call. And in the end, it's just really a matter of working working working working working until we get that sixty vote. We were actually working toward sixty five because there were a couple of people on that the original vote that we felt would probably flip. If we ended the call the house because he can't start it back up. Once you in the call the house and bring, you know, your rabbit in over, you know, so we had to have over sixty five or sixty three we were actually going for sixty five hundred sixty five actually and in once we hit sixty three all of those moderates that have been out there blocking the budget for the last two days came on board. They didn't want to be out there hanging by themselves, which I think is very telling. I mean, it's oh, yeah. It was funny. You know, as I fall I had to follow on Twitter, and what's sad it because I really hate Twitter. And it's so when you're listening to the if you listen to the hashtag ks ledge. Feed. It's so left-dominated. It's it's really it's sickening to watch it because they're so they're so literal, and lefties, but what was funny is once it was all hanging in there hanging there. We're with you and the minute all of the rhinos and the Mods jump back in. Oh, they paid. Oh, they started tearing into the and hating on them. And we're gonna primary you, and we hate you and cuss words, and it just it reminded me to all of these moderate Republicans who are so loyal to these dams and the liberals like guys, why do you bother these people hate you as much as they hate a conservative, and they will never support you in an election. The only use you write what they want. It's just like a lot of up there in Johnson county several of the moderates. They were really Democrats have changed the Republican side to get elected. But they were so liberal moderate, whatever you wanna call them. They they felt like that. They're voting record the Democrats should like him. And they could not believe that the Democrats came after an unseeded. Oh, it is. So funny. I remember when Barbara bully. Who's a doctor? You know who finally switched and was honest and switched to being a democrat. But I remember when she got stickers put on her yard signs that said Brown backer, and how mad she was couldn't believe the Democrats came after it's like guys, they hate you. You have an art behind your name. They don't care if you're a moderate are conservative. Are they still hate you? So so really what we have John is a situation where people feel like that they they have the ability to move. But then they find out when they leave their base. It's over they in in our base is moreover traditional conservative voters out there, and that's really all across the state except for Johnson county. But when you leave that what are you have because those other people don't want you they want the Democrats in there. Yep. Well, and you know, I just want to thank you for you guys. You put up the fight you you did your due diligence. You got ended up with what eighty seventy nine. I think seventy nine to forty five was in. And it's a good budget. You got more funding for corrections. You did what you needed to do. I'm not thrilled about the new money for schools only because it was extorted, and there's no count ability in there. But you know, what it hopefully, it'll end the lawsuits, I doubt it because they for them. It's never enough. But the good thing is we also go money back in rows this time compared to the path that's going to be a big deal. I think I'd just glad you were able to get in and get out and not expand Medicaid, so good work. Good on you seventy seven days. John that's pretty darn good. Especially with Laura Kelly in the governor's office. Absolutely good work, this this session. And you guys go back. What may twenty eight twenty nine ten AM for that? Should be entertaining. You may have a veto to try and override most likely. Yeah. The tax the tax Bill. I'm sure we'll get vetoed. And and we'll try to override that. Well when we get back. We'll we'll see what secretary of state Scott Schwab has to say you're listening.
Bankruptcy Filings Indicate Times Are Tough For Many U.S. Farmers

Start your journey towards data driven decision. Making it snowflake dot com slash NPR. Bankruptcy for farms in the mid west rose sharply last year. And it's not just one thing that is pushing farmers over the edge. Esther Hoenig of harvest public media reports that many of those farmers have been hit by a trifecta of trade disputes, continuing low crop prices and now extensive flooding. Corn is pouring into a semi trailer. Ben Steffens farm in southeast Nebraska. Corn out, and we will call it to atchison Kansas. That's about eighty miles one way staffing calls this past winter. Brutal on this frigid day in March most farmers couldn't clear their snow packed roads. He could which meant he got a bit more money for his corn. We're in a situation where we're we're counting nickels and pennies on every transaction and we're trying to capture every every penny weekend over the last few years. Farm income has dropped by half since high point in two thousand thirteen when you spent five years of your life pouring, your energy into a business and you're worse off today than five years ago. It feels like a crisis if dismal situation for many of America's commodity farmers, and it sparked concern that the agony tree may be on the cusp of a major downturn like in the nineteen eighties. When scores of farms went out of business. One indicator could be the number of chapter twelve filings, a special bankruptcy. Code for family farms last year. It reached nearly five hundred that I'm looking at right here suggested. Actually, we had higher. Bankruptcy rates in twenty ten in twenty eleven David Whitmore is an economist with the website agricultural economic insights. He says well overall, the farm bankruptcy rates look relatively normal to get the whole story. You have to look at all the numbers bureau wanted took into my phone with the dash the metrics that we all talk about our trade being the wrong way, metrics lake farm income would says trade disputes have hurt markets and slashed exports of major crops like soybeans and Nathan Kauffman of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City says that means excess grain is piling up. And it's pulling prices down to at or below the break, even Mark whatever may or may not happen with trade policy. I think those supplies are likely to continue to weigh on commodity prices for this receivable future. Kaufman is watching to see if this drags down. Other key financial indicators like loan repayment rates. Land values at the moment. He says, it doesn't look great. But it certainly has not gone to the point where I think that that we would call it. The kind of crisis that we saw playing out in the nineteen eighties. But tell that to the farmers in states like Nebraska and Iowa were recent floods killed livestock and drowned hundreds of millions of dollars worth of crops. Nebraska farmer. Ben Stephan says he dodged the worst of it. But if prices and trade continued to slump he along with many others may have to file for chapter twelve that's because this special bankruptcy code helps. Farmers resettled, dead and stay in business. And if that happens, lawmakers won't be ready or more going to push ahead with reform chapter twelve bankruptcy because we need to update that law. I was Senator Chuck Grassley says he wants to make sure more farmers can qualify for chapter twelve bankruptcy to do that. He's proposing more than doubling the amount of debt. They're allowed to take on from around four million dollars to about ten million. For NPR news. I'm Esther Hoenig. Mark presents skis here season ticket holder. Michelle Walker coach Bryan joy reading your book. And was wondering who would be on your all time to Matha highschool team note, you can't include yourself. Well, I wouldn't be close, you know. You know, you gotta go Dantley James Brown. You know who TV doing ball? Now, Danny ferry probably has to be on there. It gets. It gets really close. After that. You know? I mean, who we put up the ring of honor would be a candidate Bob Whitmore who that was a special weekend this past weekend. And that's why coach Wootton says, I could never pick my all time five 'cause I know I'll disappoint some about twenty five other guys, and I've tried to do same thing here. When people said who's your all time? I don't know. It's too close to make good players. Rosemary skis here. Also a season ticket holder for Michelle Walker. I'm just wondering what the players talked to the officials about when they are inbounding the ball after a timeout. Especially Rex Rex was a guy, and you know, Rex Rex was a guy who chatted everybody everybody. He chatted the other players up. And I think it was a good thing. He's talked to me during games. Yeah. He chatted refs up. And and I think it helps them like I tell our guys officials really like ref in our kids because they're good kids and. You can talk to him. And I tell our guys like part of playing the game part of the strategy that gamesmanship is having a relationship with the officials, and you know, like, you don't wanna show him up or complain like talk to him at dead-balls. They want to get to know your, you know, the same same thing with me my relationship with him throughout a season in throughout forty minutes. Pick your spots if you're gonna complain you gotta tell them when you say that was a great call. You're right. We did walk that time. You know, you gotta you gotta pick your spots with him. So, but I I've always loved I had an official come over in the garden. And he said coach, you know, I was telling the crew before your guys are like this for the most part. They're really steady they're easy to talk to their easy to officiate. And then that's that's part of the that's the game within the game. Well, it's like anything in life to if they know you and the kind of like, you play could go either way, maybe goes your way as opposed to somebody. You don't like there have been coaches, and you know, what I'm talking about. I won't say here at the end of their career. Hall of fame coaches who were so brutal on officials that they were getting teased, six minutes into games. And they weren't getting any calls at all. Because in part. There was a tension there. Yeah. You just can't be distracted by officials and that has to start with me if I'm interacting or being distracted by officials or complaining. My players are going to do the same thing. They look over like, so you've gotta practice. What you preach and be poisoned challenge them every now, and then, and I I don't have many technicals over nineteen years every now, and then you really complain. But for the most part, it's that that doesn't work with these guys like they've been doing it a long time and. You know, it's more communication with them. And and I like the staff we have in the ACC. You know, they do talk to you. They do come over and communicate and some of the really good ones know when to come over to defuse you. They do they come over. They know maybe you have a problem the last couple of minutes, and they'll diffuse you that's the really good officials. Gary rivers here is always for Michelle Walker kudos to you..

"Between people in the campaign. I have not I said president United States, President Trump's lawyer Rudy Giuliani trying to clear up comments. He made about the Russia investigation yesterday and a fierce exchange with CNN's Chris Cuomo Whitmore, we say a lotta ABC's Andy Field joins us on the KOMO Newsline from Washington with details on this Andy after some of those comments on last evening's show on CNN. I think there were more than a few jaws that had dropped and probably including the White House as well. People could make a good living in Washington selling spatulas on the sidewalk to scrape your job to grad with some of these statements one what was unusual that the president has said repeatedly that not only did he not colluded with Russia. But no one in his campaign did and then to have Rudy Giuliani get on CNN yesterday. And and suggests that well others may have colluded, but the president didn't. Left to host who's jaw dropped and a lot of people in the country, including people in the White House. Now Rudy Giuliani is kind of backed up a little bit today saying he has no idea what other people did he can only speak for the president. But of course, the president has spoken for his own campaign. Several times saying there wasn't a single person or entity who worked for him during the campaign that had anything to do with Russia or colluded in any way with interfering in the election. Forgive my ignorance on this handy, but why is Rudy Giuliani? Still a lawyer for the president. When this is the kind of thing that we've seen happen quite often. There's only one reason the president wants him to be his public spokesperson for this here. Could be other reasons for him doing this. And and they may not have been a faux pas at all. But in in fact, deliberate in that perhaps the White House knows some other informations coming out soon, and they want to get ahead of it to kind of soften the blow when when it actually happens we've seen this before where the president has routinely denied having any knowledge of paying people for their silence during the campaign, and then he said, well, my lawyer may have known about it, then he shouldn't my pay them back. And then there comes a tape. The Josie did know about it. You know, all of these stories tend to be evolving and Rudy Giuliani tends to evolve with them. But then you see today the statement saying there was no collusion by President Trump in any way, shape or form. But it's hard to hear that.
