"Advance your personal mission and your values through your board service? Of course, it can't all be focused on that, but it's, but we can be so much more effective in designing board service experiences for every board member if we understand what's motivating them. And I really appreciate what you shared about inviting folks to share about their personal values. Yeah, and almost inevitably that comes out of them sharing their narratives, right? Is that you get people to, you know, I have an ice breaker that I use that it's essentially everybody free writes a two page autobiography. And people hated until they don't. And then what we do is we facilitate a conversation about what are the common threads between whitley's story and Jones story, or oh my gosh, I had no idea that the first time you stepped in a classroom, you were 7 years old. Like, what was that like for you? It's a really actually deeply engaged with your fellow board members, and I can actually just add another statistic is that organizations that go through leadership transitions, the number one thing that screws them up is when the board is not cohesive when they are values are not aligned. When they are a collection of individuals. So there's so many different reasons for this for boards to be strong and cohesive to have shared values. We are just about out of time and I want to make sure that there isn't any piece of advice that we've left on the table that you want to make sure goes into the microphone. Either about advice about how to approach this, just anything you feel like you want to just make sure it gets out there. Yeah, well, the first thing I'll say is that you're not alone. If you're a board is thinking through how to reflect the community that you're serving, how to bring a diverse set of experiences and perspectives onto the board, you're not alone. And many organizations name this as their number one challenge on their board. As you continue conversations internally about what this means for your organization, I'd encourage you to think about what barriers there are to participation for the very people that you wish to engage on your board. That work can happen on a homogeneous board or on a very diverse board before outreach begins to community members. And so think about, have we just been doing things the way that they've always been done? Are there opportunities for us to make adjustments to make this space one that's inviting an inclusive for the people that we really want to have represented in our boardroom? And it reach out for support. There are many organizations out there, like both of ours that are willing to support your organizations. Absolutely. Absolutely. And we'll have, in the show notes, some information about cost strategy partners and about board lead. But, you know, it is one of the things that I love about my job is that I get to have conversations with other people who are as passionate about your success

"So we are having a conversation about it's a and it's a conversation about boards reflecting the communities they serve. It's a conversation about centering DEI in thinking about board composition. And we're having this conversation with whitley Richards, who's the chief program officer of cause strategy partners. Is social enterprise specializing in nonprofit board matching and training. And she is somebody who has a really nice set of credentials that you'll see in the show notes. But what I like here is that her professional mission is to live at the intersection of the public and private sectors working to foster effective equitable and inclusive leadership. So whitley, you talked a lot about the why, so then you said the other thing that really thwarts boards is how do I get started? And my listeners have just perked up, they are really, really hungry to know how to get started. And what you've learned about what kind of works and what kind of doesn't. Yeah. Well,

"To collect data on the community, I think data is really important here. So understanding how community members identify themselves, what they consider to be very important among the services that your organization is providing. Also thinking about disparate outcomes between different demographic groups and your programs. I'm thinking about who are we not doing as good of a job at serving and therefore who might we want to bring into the board room so that we can get some perspective on how we can do this better. So data is one thing I think honestly education seeking out training on thinking about how board members can actively engage with community members maintaining a connection to the community that the organization is serving. I think when there's a disconnect and there's a lot of distance between the board and kind of on the groundwork, the board just really doesn't have a sense of who they're working with. And that leaves so much room for the board to define for itself, who else needs to be in the boardroom as opposed to that being responsive to the work that's happening on the ground. One of the things that I often talk about board meetings being the biggest missed opportunities in nonprofit organizations, because they are something to be endured rather than rather than having a real purpose and this is a great opportunity, think about, so I have this I have this equation inform plus enrich plus engage equals ignite. And the enrich part is exactly what whitley is talking about. So imagine that your nominations committee is working with the board chair or with the executive director, and they're designing the board meeting. And they say, it would be great if we could bring someone in, who could enrich us about who our work touches or what are the big obstacles, right? Some of those kinds of things and outsiders always good because it could be someone from the community you serve. But someone who can really bring it to life in a way that a cruise benefit back to the nominations committee can be a really, it doesn't have to be an education process just for the nominations committee. And when you enrich your board, they have so much more skin in the game. So much more. The way that we talk about it at cost strategy partners is keeping your board spiritually aligned almost taking this element of what drew us to the organization in the first place and making sure that we are constantly feeding it and reminding ourselves of why two hour board meetings on a Wednesday evening after a really long day of work is worth our time in our full attention. So let's talk a little bit about, you know, I think in my open, I posed these three questions in the first one, stemmed from something that you said when we met that most boards don't want to do the work that is required to build a board that reflects the communities the organization serves. And I generally find that people are willing to do hard work when they really get the why behind it. And do you think that when you think about organizations you've worked with that didn't seem willing to do the hard work, what was the obstacle was the obstacle, at least in part? Like a lack of understanding about why it mattered? I think so. I think that's a part of it. And I made

"And not always defining them necessarily by our mission or by the services that we're providing, but also considering the ways in which community members talk about their own identities and talk about what's important to them. So that we can be really thoughtful and inclusive when thinking about then who do we need to have, what perspectives and voices do we need to have represented in the boardroom? So I'm going to play a game with me whitley. You are the chair of the nominations committee of the nonprofit XYZ dot org. How would you begin to work with your committee to do that kind of exploration that you're describing? What might that look like so that nonprofit leaders who are listening can sort of put their arms around that? Yeah, it's a really great question. Well, for one thing, and this is kind of responding to your question. But one thing I want to note upfront is that it's really important for the nominating committee itself to be reflective of a wide variety of identities and experiences. If that's possible for the board. As the body that's deciding who feels like a good fit for the board, we really want to be able to draw on a variety of perspectives and reduce the amount of bias that is present in that process. And one of the ways in one of the ways you can do that, I'm sorry to interrupt you whitley, but one of the ways you can do that is because I hear that too, right? Is that I don't have a diverse nominations committee. So you can have people that are on your nominations, committee who are not on your board. Yep. Right, lightbulb goes off. Yes. And by the way, it's such a wonderful way to bring someone closer to the organization who gets to hear that this is something you care about. And so make the board committees should be chaired by board members, but populated,

Bart Herbison Tells Us About the Nashville Songwriters Association

"When I talk about the Nashville songwriter association, they asked, well, what is that? So let's start off here, but just won't tell a little bit about how you got into this and also about the national songwriters as well. Well, me first a little hoity toity. My father was a painter in Paris. A house painter in Paris Tennessee. And look, we grew up in a rural area, somewhat poor, and music was the thing. Music, my grandma played piano in our little Methodist Church, and everybody was musical in my family. Three brothers played Trump at I blew mine, the other two played theirs. And I guess it's 16 years old. I got a job as a dish jockey at the local radio station, which was an NBC affiliate, and ended up doing some work on a national show they had. But a guy that grew up with me became a very famous songwriter named Jimmy Stewart, he wrote brotherly love, the last number one for Keith. Whitley, a little less talk for Toby, and I just was always drawn to that. I always drawn to they just make this up out of thin air and I said as a child some day somehow I'll work with American songwriters, and I did. For us, the origin story, I don't sing, but remember please release me let me go. The waste our lives would be a sin, release me and let me love again. That was written by Eddie Miller. Yeah, singing was not part of that too at bar. It takes a while to pass the bill. And he was a real southern gentleman, and he thought we can orgas the songwriters. There were only 80 songwriters total 80 in the entire town of Nashville in 1967. And he reached out to all of them and a lot didn't want to risk their career because even our friends within the music industry didn't necessarily want to see the songwriters quote unquote organize. But Eddie got married John wilkin Chris Christopherson fully and boulevard Bryant Liz and Casey Anderson, a bunch of really important songwriters and 42 risk their careers to become an advocate advocacy group for American

That's probably that's a so. We talked about this a few weeks ago. or lindsey. you know proposed a theory that the reason pete davidson and kayla cuevas previous relationships fell apart was because they fell for each other on the set of that movie meet cute and i think we called it a meat horrible and now it's actually getting coverage in the tabloids. Guy named morph it and taking his last name or like vaguely taking his last name. Jordana brewster more. I can't wait til she's in a movie on the poster. So you know the emmys complaining last week that like we wanted to watch the bma's but it's impossible to watch. the emmys. Were so easy to watch. And i was like you do this. Well they were really kinda just weird. The shows that swept were like not shows. I care like i was like ted lasso. The queen's gambit and the crown swept like could you think of a more like kind of just bland kind of swath of television. You know no. I can't Yeah a camp. There were some fun writing awards. Yeah no that's true. I mean hacks. One and and mayor got its mayor. Got some people. Some emmys kayla cole. One but michaela coal one for like. What did she went for writing right. Yeah all the actors. Were like ted lasso to lan mayor. I could barely watch the vietnamese. But i could talk about him for six hours like i could watch the emmys and i really don't want to talk about them for more than three minutes as had had layers to them. There was fashion and stuff and new people and people. I didn't know and young people and emmys kind of felt everybody. There i was like. Oh you're here you look at the. At least the emmys are responsible for one of the funniest tweets. I'd seen in a really long time. Which was from variety and it said at variety on twitter tweeted the handmaid's tale sets record for most losses in a season congrats. Dale congrats wasn't there but most of course because they weren't her ear about to lose. And it's going to be an record or they said where's your vaccination card and she was like oh I don't think i'm gonna win. I'm not gonna come yet. There wasn't as much speculation about who wasn't at the emmys as there was about. Who wasn't at the vm as gala. So interesting even though like literally in the opening remark cedric. the entertainer was like everyone here is faxed like he said that he also did a joke about the fly so remove about the actual fly that landed on mike pence's head from like what eons ago that felt like a century ago. You know what happened more recently. As in yesterday yeah. Very abraham said that she was going to yale law school or applied or or applied for told us last time so he got transcripts to enroll at a new school. I'm just wondering. Have you done that. Have you picked a school again. Exciting time so like law firms are coming up We have so many options as law students to schools like yells reached out. I'm so i am. I'm just so pumped because i have all these choices for law school and Yeah so. I don't know if i'm going to stay here on the west coast or the east coast. I do have to say after the harvard debacle. I think the west coast is more diverse and appropriate for like inclusion. Better weather So we'll see what happens about that. We got the former teen mom star at debbie. Durken's eko looks lounge event we spent. That's where you find people where where do you find. Various abraham if not debbie durkan zico. Luckily we were looking for any fair abraham because we want to talk to her. We found her at debbie. Durken's eko lugs lounge event at the beverly hills hilton. It's one of those. It's like an emmy it's one of those like emmy get the giveaways events so it's emmy adjacent and you and you show up and then you get stuff just one of those ass about the emmys. The gift deamer the gifting things the gifting channels or remember last year..

"The celebrities. You don't. i'm bobby finger. I'm lindsey weber and we're going on tour come get tickets to see us live all around the country well in many places in the country who weekly dot us and you'll hear us saying we're singing. We are yeah. Here's a clip from one of our rehearsal so much tv. And this rap wouldn't be complete to eric. I'm not sure. I guess i should've called that wrapping. But can i call wrapping like gladys going on with like the wave at like the the the chasm between how pe- real people think about rita wilson. And how hollywood thinks rita wilson leg. And how rita wilson thinks about rita. Well that's a whole other. How tom hanks thinks about rita wilson. There's a weird like disconnect there. Is she like darling that we that hollywood thinks she is. I think people just feel so well about not to define a woman based on her husband. But i think this is an exception of it's like. Can't tom nina so much. he's he hasn't anomaly. People love him so much and he sort of and if he's not really accessible. It's sort of like well. we can get rita. Rita always answers her phone. Rita is always down. I just feel like it's funny. Where she keeps showing up and she keeps wrapping. And then you have like compare that to her like wrapping son. Who never comes up and is almost weirdly like on the same track as her but nobody wants to talk about him. It's just funny. That rita wilson sorry to read up is like just like not iconic at all and not only is she not iconic just like from a very like she really run of the mill perspective of celebrity. Like she's not famous for television. So why is he at the emmys. She's not really famous for movies. She's i guess famous for singing but compared to everyone else at the grammys. She's way down the list and what doesn't really hangs his wife. Yes so what are you doing at the emmys but kind of what is she doing anywhere you know why not. I guess readers gonna wrap just a friend. Even the other people are singers. Like they got the guy the the who the white guy who has the show that everyone's like it's actually really good like what's that. Show called take little dicky. What's it called dan. It's called like dave but it's like dave's actually really good at least. I know that he is a rapper. Like rita wilson. Yeah i guess she's always down they always love to trot her out. You know as like someone. It's just very strange to me with the whole like we're not going to talk about your son legua. When you're both kind of out here wrapping like i just. It's very. It's very weird like why. Why did we let her get away with this and she is. I guess a list. She's just like one of the kookiest people a-list you know and she's ayla simply because she's tom hanks wife. Yeah that sounds so nasty to say. But i i think it's true. No i mean when you break it down. I don't know that. I'd say she's good at wrapping. She also case of the rap reported she was She wore it. Tom ford suit and she was on the red carpet talking to kerama. Oh and by the way the as calling him cromwell brown and. I thought we dropped that brown months ago. So we've got a needs to correct needs to correct. He's just caro- kerama. Also as i was saying his name i was like i'm not gonna say brown like everyone knows it's rahmo as okay. We'll give him that. She said she was asked why she chose to go outside. The fashion norm which is by the way going outside the fashion. Norman example is wearing pants and not address. It's two thousand and twenty one gay. Just let's let's remind ourselves that and she said because i don't drop molly iraq. Tom ford so she was trying to quote jay z. She got like pretty close pretty close. Yeah it's pop. Molly not drop molly. I don't know like you can't really drop molly. You drop acid. I guess you'd pop molly like it's a pill. I don't think. I need to explain drugs to rita wilson. I think she's very familiar with drugs not that she does drugs..

"And why i'm here and that's why i am continuously no matter how much i piss you off. I am continually open to and just so thankful for who you are and what you bring and the life that you've lived and the contributions you've made you are just an amazing amazing spiritual being and communicator. And i honor what you've done what you continue to do because you know sometimes people you know th the whitley is not going anywhere. He's still cranking out stuff you know go to unknown country dot com. Go to dreamland. Listen to that amazing podcast. I think just. I mentioned earlier in the show. The interview with ralph blumenthal. It's phenomenal. you cannot read ralph's book and not listen to whitley's interview with them. The two would be y- they should be. He should be sending those out an mp three with it. 'cause one doesn't even fully tell the story without the other because whitley is so central to so much of this experience that we're living as were unfolding into this larger reality that is you know this e. t. ufo thing widely phenomenal. That you've join me. And i thank you so much. I'm sorry i put you on. Tilt but i'm not gonna apologize right. I'm sorry on tilt a few times in my life. I bet. But i i would like at some point to discuss my book which we did not do. You're going to have to find somebody else to do that. I guess because. I can't think so. Yeah because i because josephus is is a very peripheral last active the book. But i don't want let's not go back there. We've been there on that it's over and actually show there's actually Which you you don't you don't see it that way which is fine. There's no there's some really important points of connection between what you're saying. And what. I'm saying i mean what you're saying about. Constantine what you're saying about the romans co-opting the religion is central to what i'm saying you're just taking a slightly different direction. And a lotta times. That's how it is when people talk about. Even with people are in sync. The differences are what..

"Tall statue. A gold head. Selfish shoulders stomach was bronze legs for feet. Were great stone was thrown. Clay feet broke and the statue collapsed. You see god through the stone. The stones make around is the stench. So you'll kingdom world replaced bro now. I this isn't exactly in the gospels. But this is the strange way that christianity works. Most christians understand this to be a fundamental part of what happened right. So whether you can point to particular line in the gospels. Most christians understand that this is what it was about. It was about jesus talking to power talking to rome. And say we're gonna bring your ass down. My followers will eventually bring you down. The mustard seed will grow and rome will be destroyed now. This is exactly the kind of stuff that whitley strieber puts forth in this book. We're gonna talk about today show and it's really really important to figure out whether that's true because i think it's not only not true. It's actually completely the opposite. It is a scripted. Social engineering project intended to take you in exactly the opposite direction. I can't get all the way there now but stick around and you'll hear in shows the come up. What really happened. But i'll give you the short version. The romans co out to christianity and used it to essentially reboot the roman empire in a way that allowed the roman empire to decline while it wasn't really declining. It was still business as usual through this little entity that they created called the church the pope christianity. That's why this history is so important to me. And that's why if you listen to this show you know once i kinda kinda something. It's hard for me to get off it. But that's if you're going to stick around with me you're gonna hear a bunch more shows on this topic. Hopefully they won't all be as contentious as this one with a guy. I still stand behind. Everything i said i think is one of the most important people in our history and someone who i greatly admire for. His non linear thanking. I just think he's kind of not done his homework on this history and i think it it comes through but that's okay like i like to say way way higher than hall of fame batting average and whitley strieber is definitely in the hall of fame. Here's a couple of clips from the show. I don't even know why we're talking about it. It has almost nothing to do with my book. Well it it has. It has everything to do with your book. The only references i made i was well aware of josephus and his And in fact in that time no one was writing history as we think of it now. That had not even been invented yet. So why are we talking about josephus. I agree because you should care. There's some really important points of connection between what you're saying and what i'm saying. Let me what you're saying about what you're saying about the romans co-opting the religion is central to what i'm saying. You're just taking a slightly different direction and a lot of times. That's how it is when people talk about even with our in sync. The differences are what..

"So you are. King jews kings over. Well you want us without sim. Well that's what they're saying. You on the king messiah of the clip from the movie the last temptation of christ. And that's David bowie believe it or not playing pontius pilot. You know a usually like to keep these introductions rather short and connell all of us kind of figure this stuff out. Have our own experience with it. But i kind of feel like i need an expanded introduction to this one because of had a couple of interviews lately with some christian friends people. I really really like honor and respect. Who seemed to just not be rocking the basics of my understanding of this. So let me of lay this out. One is i honor your spiritual experience your christ consciousness experience if that's what it is and not because i'm a particularly nice guy but because as you've heard the data compels me to understand that you're more than a biological robot meaningless universe that there is this extended realm and that you could vary will be connecting with it in some way that makes christ consciousness feel so i'm down with that but if you're going to connect your spiritual experience with history in history is tricky but let's just pretend there is this shared consensus reality that we call history and we all trying to agree on. Let's just make that a given if you're going to connect your spiritual experience with some texts with some documents with some archaeological evidence will vent. That's a different discussion. And here's the rub. The gospels are not historical like if you go to seminary and you study this stuff deeply. You learn that pretty quickly. I say okay. Yeah you know there's different translations there's contradictions or conflicts. All all that kind of stuff. Even most christians kind of get that they've been beat up by that enough news enough popular books they get that they can't take their gospels literally but there is this lingering false impression among christians that you know despite those problems the gospels are still well basically historically i mean it kind of got. The gist of it here is jesus meeting with pontius pilot. I gotta tell you go look at your gospels. That is right out of the gospels..

"I dunno disclosure. I guess we could call it. We're going through the that some people call it a sigh up. But it certainly is an official semi-official disclosure but the third of that would have to be the publication of whitley's book communion. Which if people don't remember because they're not older. When communion was in the book shelves back when they had bookstores it stopped people in their tracks. They were not mesmerized to say as the correct word they were they were transformed by their real memories of things that had happened to them. That's how significant that book was. It shifted our whole perception of this phenomenon from a nuts and bolts technology phenomenon to experience her phenomenon. Whitley did that and then he changed it again along the way just by his own raw discovery and sharing that discovery with us he shifted it again to a consciousness centered. Experience saying that. It's not just about the experience. It's about what the experience means that that consciousness level and then finally if you followed his work in the last few years he shifted it again in the most significant way from consciousness centered which really means mind for a lot of people to an extended consciousness perspective. The work with his departed wife and and her near death experience and then her after death communication and woodley's ongoing extended consciousness communication with these ones that he calls the visitors in what that means. A deep dare i say spiritual level but we have to. Because that's what it's at. It's phenomenal phenomenal person in our in our history which we just don't we just don't appreciate it. Do you have any any thoughts on your position. And all this your legacy position or anything like that. I certainly thought about it a lot. You know how. I ended up dropped into this particular bag. I was a not living a life that was connected with this in any way win..

Marty is going in as a modern era artist category, Dean in the songwriter category, and Hank Jr goes in in the Veterans era artist. Filling the gaps

"I'm Steven Seagraves. Joined by Seth Miller and Fayza Mood Gentlemen. How are you doing? Well Yeah are you. I'm feeling a little better. Not One hundred percent. But I'm getting there. Just good this. This episode is being recorded solely with your right year. Yes yes so. I have no since of Stereo should we? Should we record him on? Then that's what it feels like the spoiler alert. They're all mono gotta time production and that's where they always end. We should edit this so stevens voice only comes. I left to come out of the right now. The problem is I can't do that. You can do that man. Let's let's think that'd be mean to our listeners. Think it'd be really peel off for sure A. Let's just start off by talking about what we're doing to fill our time. I'm working from home Seth I'm guessing you are as well and I got a call at work call today and so I was like. Oh so you know how you adjusting us in that. You're going to work. I always work from home did I. And I actually don't even go out on a normal day anyways this really has to say it hasn't affected me because it definitely has but on a day-to-day basis. My experience is very very similar. To what normally as I don't go to the gym I was GonNa say how can affect you in your navy reporter. Well right I mean mentally. I'm a disaster but physically. I'm sitting in the same place. I would have been anyways this weekend though normally would be on my way to Hamburg Aircraft Interiors Expo that has postponed slash canceled. I think it will actually cancelled but they admitted that That was supposedly Friday. Actually somewhat pleasantly surprised. I was able to D M American Airlines and British Airways cancelled. The flight was booked on the American and American process. The refund. They. I want me to go. Do it myself And the American process for getting a refund on their website is crap but when I went click the button is. We're sorry you can't cancel this ticket online. Ibm's him back and last night. That took care of it for me and this morning got back in touch with me told me is getting one hundred thirty two euros refunded calls. That make you feel Stephen. That's the opposite experience of united. Yes I mean at this point. I think I'm just going to file a charge. Back in right at the OT complaint wasn't what our friends at the exact same issue five tickets United Future Refunds Fry Open disputes and FAU DOT complaint if they even had chesser columbine. But if I have issues. I do the exact same thing. So here's a question for you guys. Because I believe it or not. In a similar scenario scenario my ticket home from Hamburg was an SAS operated reward issued by united and again. That's flights aren't operating. So they're gonNA is. This is just an award ticket. At worst I pay seventy five dollar redeposit. Fina get my points back. But they've canceled the flights in theory in any other scenario the the points would just get refunded for free. I can obviously issue a charge back for the taxes which were not insignificantly than Europe. But do you think stand a chance of getting my points for free or just assume? I'M GONNA pay the five dollars and have not combined until dollars you'll be able to do without the Without the thing is they're dragging their feet on refund simply because they don't want they want to hold onto the cash right so their latest policy is they will. Your ticket will stay OPEN FOR YEAR. And then they will process a refund for you right. Which assuming they're in business assuming they're in business. I mean I would hope that. If the government doesn't give these airlines a lifeline that part of those stipulations they can play stupid games. This is just ridiculous. I had a a friend asking me. His parents were supposed to go. This pet last Wednesday supposed to be on the united nonstop to Cape Town and then from there to Singapore on Swiss and then home if you or whatever and then back to the states and was asking me you know how to get out of it. Essentially we've been going back and forth like a month trying to help him out on that and Donna Mile. Just wait. Just wait. Just wait as the rules as more and more cancels things will get better for you and he eventually got to the point where they took a voucher because I think the united out athletes still operated even though this we're canceled at that point but he said his his parents. His parents were concerned that the vouchers would be nullified in a bankruptcy. I would be too I. It's a fairly assumption is it? I've thinking back of other airline bankruptcy. I don't remember that being something that they went after as far as assets they haven't but there's nothing asserted that they won't. I mean this might be more dire than anything else. They've had to go through in the past we. We are certainly unprecedented in unprecedented Era The industry. But I feel like I feel like I get I get. Why United's trying to do it. I think that they're doing it in the wrong way. Like you know. If American like American said to us they cancelled your flight. They're going to refund the. There's no reason. United should be like. Oh well we're GONNA keep your money and you're gonNA get a certificate for that case like Eve. In my case I would say my cases the like the extreme in maybe so mine is they delayed thirty two hours and basically making me leave a day early to to make connections. Chicago incidents Thirty two hours. And I like that may be a scenario where it's inconvenient for me. I could see cancelling it and keeping a credit. I don't like it. I think it's wrong but I think cancellation of a flight is more important than than my scenario. You know what I mean like. Think it's more. It's more useful for that person to get a refund in comparison to me so I don't know I just. It's disappointing that united to doing it. This way You know just actually has a flight scheduled for Wednesday that she's supposed to Austin she's not going to take the trip but I mean there's four people on the plane and amazed. I'm amazed Alaskan cancelled. It was actually talking to someone earlier today. Alaska of all the US carriers. Alaska Airlines has reduced. Its schedule. The least yeah which is really strange to me If you WANNA put on your foil hat and go for a fun ride. One of the arguments was. Maybe they want bankruptcy to undo the mess they made with the Virgin America by how might be a little bit extreme. But yeah it's really interesting how little they've adjusted their schedules Compared to obviously the big the biggest airlines Delta American united have cut massive chunks. But a lot of that international and international that Alaska never did anyways but domestic loads crater. Like jetblue is doing whether calling rolling cancellations where a day or two before the flight. If the loads are too low. They're just canceling. The trips. Reminded one hundred one hundred fifty of the eight hundred flights a day. They're doing that too now because they literally I mean. These aren't flights with single. Digit numbers of passengers. And I've pilot friend of mine. They're posted on Instagram of thirteen souls. Onboard for crew was ninety four crew nine passengers. Which is you have to cancel it. I would think a one off whatever maybe not but this is not a one off. This is the new regular. Yeah and like. That's the thing with justice flights. Like if they really wanted to they could cancel her flights and re Booker via Seattle or San Jose City And maybe put more people in planes but from what I've seen is just been masking insulations on her plate where Whitley were full. 'cause it's break here and no one's traveling now so these are all regional flights This is Portland Austin. Non-south is one seventy five thousand guys. No no it's it's not to Airbus seven seven. Three nine on the way back doesn't do anything at the regional contracts. It's it's the hipster expresses usually full. Well you know what's funny? Obsessed mention keep to honor their nose. Looking Newer Capetown is going out empty. Capetown Newark is coming back full. Everybody's evacuating Africa. Yeah it's crazy. Well that would cause I was wondering why they're running that play all the way through the end of the schedule and they cancelled everything else. I started looking at the loads mccaw. That makes more sense. Yeah there's a lot of very symmetrical loads right now Someone was saying the China Southern puts three eighties back on L. A. X. Three times a week now for those you worry that the eighties never fly again. At least for the very short period of time China Southern brought back by apparently the the SCUTTLEBUTT is empty coming into L. A. And full gone out with three Patriots Knees China as well so take with a grain of salt. It was shared by someone who is a Chinese national by suggesting that the Chinese of the United States are fearful especially in Los Angeles area. If you're full of the medical system WANNA get back to China where they think they'll be treated better. I think at this point China's probably the safest China or South Korea Safest PLACES TO BE. Certainly the most skilled incompetent in dealing with the situation. Exactly I I did find it interesting. That Singapore has now banned even transit passengers. I mean that's kind. I mean that's a. That's a new one for me now. There's a lot of countries doing now Part of that is they're they're not allowing entry of non residence and as flights are being canceled and operations are going to how they don't want to get stuck with someone who is now living in the airport

Why do Muslim women wear burkas?

"It is of course generally the case that women were is discussed an judged in a way that what men were is not that discussion and judgment is exponentially more intense. Certainly in the Western world where what? Muslim women were is concerned. To the extent that roughly nine hundred million women of wildly various nationalities cultures beliefs backgrounds at cetera often reduced to one garment. Which almost none of them. Actually wear a corrective now exists in the form of. It's not about the Burka. An Anthology of essays by Muslim women writers activists poets and more including two monocle twenty four contributors some Danny and Yasmin Abdelmajid. It's not about the Burka subtitled Muslim women. On faith feminism sexuality and race is edited by Mariam Con. I spoke to marry him at Midori. House earlier before we get into the contents of it's not about the Burka of let's start with the title of it because intern. Certainly if the way that the you know I don't need to tell you this but in terms of the way that the media discusses Muslim women in particular it has become about the Burka. Why do you think that is why the fascination with this one garment not really worn by that many Muslim women? I think it's many things I if I'm honest. But it's also so so many things being it's easy to use of lead or perpetuate or portray a group of people. If you say everyone is like this one thing everyone does one thing whereas one thing so it's that also we live in a patriarchal society so it's very much this obsession with women or women just in general and their bodies and having power over them and what they can win what they can't wear so very much From all sides within the Muslim community outside of it though I would argue that the Birkat narrative has been built on the outside of within the western sphere And so yeah that's where it comes from and to the reason that is not about the backer is it's not about the back is because back when me and my publisher looked into. It is the most politicized Tom. Or what around Masuma if you type in Muslim women burqas most likely unless it's changed in the last year year and a half and I very much doubt that with our current prime minister continuing tests? Fallas stereotypes I would. It's dillistone such Tom. Even though I can't I can't remember the stops for the UK Whitley but for France which banned the buck When they were in that legislation there was only about two thousand women wearing the buck in the whole sixty million population of the country. So I find that. Really curious that people feel the need to Control and portray missing minute specific way and it's just easier to control a bunch of people if you say everyone's this one traditionally submissive type of way so the idea is presumably then that it's not about. The Burke is a corrective to that. You get several female. Muslim writers to write about being female Muslims. If you want a show and say yes if you want the longer answer we live in a society that is capitalist on. You need to sell a market audience. Something they can recognize on the you know the Shannon's and the the you know Giles's and the Tom's need-we to recognize a narrative that has been built around Muslim women and it's not about the backyard the buck is what they recognize about. Masud women think. Oh this is great. It's going to be exactly what I know completely does the opposite so that very much. I didn't go into it. Thinking this book was not called. It's not about the bucket from inception. actually hated figuring out a title. It was the worst part of the entire process. I can guarantee you that And it was kind of a very bitter bitter part for me because I came to this realization that regardless of whether I wanted to or not I would have to undo a narrative that I played no part in creating So I did it by literally giving them the title and thought well the books not going to give you anything about. Boko the job. How did you go about assembling your roster of contributors very much so Research and People often think it was me and a bunch of Friends. Very much was not This is me literally so really trying to reach out to as many of women as I could from different spaces and spheres age-groups coaches religious practice within the Muslim community And saying Hey. I'm doing this thing. Would you like to be a part of and there wasn't any special person? It was literally just research googling and speaking different seen who they were influenced by as well and so so people like Yasmin Abdelmajid. Everything that happened with her in Australia was a huge thing and I had been following that and I really love the way that she carried herself but she was honest integrity. And then Salma Donnie. And Her TEDTALK mcquay regular voices. On nautical twenty four hours and. They are very powerful with that. Voice is an apologetic. And I knew I wanted that. But then I also didn't want this book to be a collection of known voices or without form. So then you know respectfully not to say the EPA didn't have platforms or even an audience but they weren't as well known Osama and Yasmin. Russell people like Jamila Heckman. Who writes about a struggle with mental health and You know the part that I wish you talked about was how she believed.

3 Aviator Guests Who Flew The F117

"Today we have not one two three we Aviators who flew the F.. One seventeen so with us today. We have colonel at Whitley. We have colonel. Ralph Goetchel and colonel. Ganja Gentlemen thank all of you for being here. We also have their wives with us here. They were able to join us so Just want to thank the six of you for making the trip up to to Oshkosh Wisconsin. Shearson time on this pleasure absolutely so and also they'll be joining us tonight for. EA Speaker series which For those are you listening. It's too late for you but make sure you missed a good one guy you know especially that one part but do check our local to the oshkosh area. Ever want to make a trip sometime. When it's not air venture be sure to check our social media on our website and our online newsletter for for future dates for this for the series so with that of course I guess I'll I'll kick it over to you to kind of ask what we usually ask for the introductory questions for our I guess one of my favorite questions ask because everybody has a story What I made you WanNa fly well for me? As a child growing up I was the child of a World War Two veteran. My Dad worked for a company in which there was is a retired Military Aviator who was the president and CEO of textile the organization being from the South and he was a big collector of military aircraft. And he he shared this collection with the people who work for his organization and so we as kids. We just climb all over a variety of military aircraft and been a little bit older than these other guys I Remember Korea Had Our tendency to visit the local airport just watching it but what the moment that really struck me was when I had my first Ryder t thirty. The three in the backseat. My time is that My choices were go through. ROTC in college or not go to college and be a grunt in the United States are going to be at Phnom and frankly when I went to field training between my sophomore junior year and had that first orientated applied on ever get get visit. Myrtle Beach Airforce Base took off on their forget we broke ground on a cloudy sky and that contrast to the ocean and the white sand. And I said Gosh. Gosh this is what I WANNA do. That was that moment that really struck out for me and I had a great again in front seat and that was that was a magic moment for me. That's awesome How about you Colonel Jill? We're like to point to say that my father who was in the military inspired mutation Taeb restrained to be AAA battery commander so that didn't feel bad but my mother was a navy wave during World War Two and it was a linked trainer operator and she brought with her the navy how to fly manuals and all the things that I just devoured in junior high and high school. I lived on a ranch in central Florida that was in the running line for the navy. Pine Castle air to ground range or GonNa rage and so I could be down there shoveling horse apples or whatever it is that at a ranch boy does it'd be threes and fours and four eight. Five eight vigilantes roaring overhead on looking up and Goya looks like a lot more fun than down here and I did a little investigation allegation and found out that the navy guys running aircraft carrier. And there's no women on carrier knows no beer on the carrier and that that launched launched me on a on a career near fourth. Although my dad wasn't an aviator was on the Coast Guard World War Two timeframe when I was young very young he took me to an EA gathering back when it was in Rockford. And I got my first flight in a gypsy. Moth Open Air. I don't remember eight or nine years old in it's kind of set a spark. My father was always aviation suzy's and then as I was getting into high school I just thought the flight fighters be like the greatest job in the world early in high school. Had I had a cousin that went to the Air Force Academy and I got to thinking I was also the oldest of seven children in the finances of going to college made made a huge difference if the government was sending me to college and I got a chance to be a pilot. Boy that'd be cool owes able to get into the Air Force Academy train their want to go to pilot training and it was just kind of always been my goal to head in that direction. I didn't necessarily have specific specific path but worked out and there. We have how that's awesome. That's really cool. You have an EA if you're early flight and that's pretty wild. It's grown a bit Rockford. We noticed it so we just heard your first experience in an airplane What about the what? What did you was the first plane? Overflowing well following pilot training. No now you just mean like as a kid but as I said in the t thirty three that's an awesome. I fly has an awesome and of course it there in that timeframe There was a program in. ROTC for juniors and sophomores to Get their pilot. License called the flight instruction program and I went through that and of course into the air force and on the pilot training but my first airplane eh operation and was the F. One hundred which kind of an interesting about that as a kid growing up I mentioned that my first flight and the t thirty three was There'll beach airforce. Base happened to be two three fifty four th wing air flying f one hundred's so as a kid. I got a lot of Hans and I never thought that I'd be one of those guys flying the F. One hundred it's an amazing airplane. Yes it is about you. My first light was in a was in a Tri Pacer and my I had a I had a friend in elementary school was interested in aviation as well and my brother and we saved our money and we parents take us out your fort and got a little introductory flight And the next one after that was on my way to the Air Force Academy Outta me. My Kademi lays officer now. This central Florida had a steer men and he put me up in the German to go flying and that open cockpit Pitt. Experience was quite a thrill that is pretty cool at the step up from a Tri Pacer. Quite a bit so we'll talk a little bit about how you guys transitioned into the F. One seventeen program And currently I guess we should start with you since you you were there for pretty early on to keep household about that yes and the late nineteen eighties. I received my backup of it in late late. Nineteen Eighty I was just finishing the eight and fighter weapons school and being reassigned their analysis to be the assistant operations officer in that unit. Something I'd really want to do for some time really looking forward to it but no sooner had I arrived in the squadron and I got a phone phone call from the gentleman I had never met before. who asked me if he could meet me a specific building a specific perfect room at a specific time in several weeks ahead? This guy's name was Bernard Bob Jackson Quite a character in his own right in On the predetermined date and time I arrived air knocks on the door. Door opens about an inch. And I hear this voice is. Are you whittling. I said Yes sir they let me see your ID card slip it through the door. Who knows what's going on the other side he's probably chuckling or whatever but invites me in and we have about three five minute interview that Everything he offered was great but not assured I took him up on his offer. And that's how I joined the unit and made a commitment At that time and two or three months later one of the first in whoops called the initial padres to show up. We didn't have a permanent place to stay. We had a couple of Single wide trailer on on the flight. Line at Nellis Air Force Base and I spent about four and a half five years With the unit I watched it go from obtaining are I eighty seven to become an seven unit the with the as our cover story story Doing Avionics testing and of course I was For whatever reason nothing unique about me because because there were several very talented and capable people in part of that initial Kadre but Colonel Jackson for whatever reason he did elected to Have may be the first operational pilot now. I've had two theories about that. The first is I was expendable. Yeah and so. If it didn't work out nothing was lost but and as it turned out That that was a very unique experience and then of course Being the first operational pilot help check out the next guy and so on and so forth and eventually we received airplanes wanted to time and we checked out people want at the time and by while the intent was by nineteen eighty two to have limited operational operational capability. We simply just didn't the airplanes fast enough because some challenges that they had faced in that process and well how to build it exactly and each airplane was very unique in his own right. What those first few coming up? Because there's a lessons learned very quickly. Adjustments were being made in the Production and June of eighty five rolled around I had basically Evolved into being the Training Squadron Commander and I left the unit about four or five assignments later in August of nineteen ninety. I showed back up on the doorstep So we we had come all the way back to band at one fifty and being the first operational pilot. That's the how we came about my bandit number
