Eventually i hate to say. I never want to say is about black people. Always you say about asians. So i'm kind of racist the wrong for because i used to make fun of raisins raises asians. Because i said man one day that's it. They are hot and they hit a wall. Here's a secret about black people. One day we wake up and we we oldest fuck we hit walls and everybody else but everybody hits. Everybody hits the wall. We just hit that wall longer than everybody else. And his the way the time goes a math goes he hit that he hit that wall before dawn. And you later find out that. He's a rapper. Would a stupid name midsize sedan. Because i guess i guess what you to. The trump was taken like isn't any dumber than paper boy. Yeah sitting paper. Take the ball mama. Don't make them dumb. And you know that. The in my son like came up with that name mitzvahs sedan. They don't get me wrong saying that what i'm saying is you just you find out that this character is here for just talking about the writing. The writing is so short happen. Everybody including him. Like i said these kids that use those devices. This man right here is used as a device. He's used for two things. He's not a character just two things. One is for a setup in the movie that we didn't even need true they did a set up now. I'm glad to hear some new. A bogus save. I got anything movies. The mass always say if i get a shot of a nice ads but really by being shallow with the shit and you didn't even need that. It just made the movie ten minutes longer than what it really is to be. If you had the ejecta character that would not affect the story. He would be the one. Yeah yeah you didn't need him. You don't need to set up that that's there for him. shaved. Tim moved two minutes off the movie easily. The other is just a show you a of a character who again don't really mean anything in the movie. He just there so you that the that the the the blustery stuck a british dude that he might be racist people before they leave. I think we will have to leave. "Held in New Zealand to mark the first anniversary of the volcanic eruption on White Island in which 22 people died. The victims of the disaster, mainly Australian tourists, lost their lives when a cloud of hot ash, acidic sludge and poisonous gas suddenly engulfs him. The bodies of two people have never been found. Many of the survivors were permanently scarred with severe burns. Jeff Hopkins, a pastor from nearby Hamilton was with his 22 year old daughter, Little Arnie and aspiring vulcanologist on a tour boat. They'd left the island minutes before the eruption. The Tour Guide's Turn the boat around to head into the ash cloud to try to find survivors have been speaking to Jeff and Leilani. What was it like to go back today for the ceremony? We were a little uncertain of what to expect. We knew we wanted to be there, but we went down the night before. It felt good being there. It felt right. There was a piece about the place. I think we knew at that stage that we've made the right decision to be there. And then, of course, today whole lot of memorial and ceremony and it was just been Really, really good to connect with some of the crew that we're on our boat. Some of the crew that were injured that we've been able to keep in touch, but never actually met and also some of the families as well. So it's been was a really special time. We were obviously celebrating the ones that are recovering, but at the same time remembering those that didn't make it so. It's actually good to see people that you've you've helped. Yeah, it was definitely positive and it was. It was the only way I would have wanted to spend the day I can't think of anything else that I would have wanted to do. Well any other way that I would have wanted to spend it than with the people that we did, and the way that we did a real connection, then with the people who were with you at the time. Yes or a couple of the survivors who were the tour guides on the obviously on the island. I've been in contact with one of them quite a lot. So that was the first time I've actually seen her since the day and then just seeing and hearing some of the stories off those you feel like you could know people and you have a connection with them. Even though you don't know them in person, so just spending that time remembering their lives and then remembering the recovery. What can you tell us about that moment of eruption? I mean, perhaps, is to describe what you remember seeing for us. So me and dad were facing out towards say, so he didn't see it erupt to start with Wilmore alerted to the Commotion on the back of the boat, and that's when we turned around, and we saw a plume of ash just high in the sky. I rushed to the back of the boat to take photos and videos because I was super excited and then we kind of the boat sped off and the ash cloud started to roll over the cliffs towards us. And attend from what was ah, a pale gray and liked to more menacing, dark gray and black. And that's when we're rushed inside. And it turned from more of a moment of beauty to terror within seconds. Did you know what was going on? Then? Did you know why Suddenly you're in danger? Yes. Soon as honestly, as soon as we have seen it. Obviously we were off the island on the boat. So we were a little bit away from it. So for us to see it, it would have been maybe, like a good couple of 100 M high up in the sky over for we had seen it So Yeah, of course. I was like I knew that it was erupting. What else could have Bean What about the decision to go back and join the rescue effort and try to help people who were still on the island? Was that an easy decision to make? Yeah, for I think for me and dad. It's both the same way we we help people, and we put others before the needs of ourselves a lot of the time. So in that moment, just putting our own emotions and fears aside. And helping people was a no brainer. And I would do it again. Happy. It was pretty horrific there. What you found when you got back to the island, wasn't it? Yes, it was a lot worse than what I had imagined and what I had thought. But as soon as I saw what I was faced with, I know that I needed to put my own emotions aside and I needed to do whatever I can to help the people and that's what I did. And Jeff was there any question about whether you should go back? Yeah, I think the decision to take the boat back was the skippers, and he didn't ask for a consensus or a vote. That's what we were doing. His colleagues were there on the island, and that's where we were going. I guess the decision that we had was whether we stayed in a cabin. Or whether we went out to help was soon is the first boatload of injuries came on. You know, we said, Hey, we're first day train. Can we help And that was an open invite to you. We need all the help you can get. And what confronted you when they came aboard. I honestly was expecting to see cuts, abrasions injuries from flying rocks. That's what I thought I was going to be dealing with. And when we we went to the back of the boat as the first injuries came on, and I can't remember been three or four people and they were just horrific. Lee Byrne. And that wasn't what I was expecting on. Then the next boat load came on same injuries again. Horrific burns, a horrific burns, horrific burns and I remember the first aid kit that I had the most useful part of it was Theo. Empty container for water. I tipped my first aid kit out. And started filling up with water. We just needed water and has enough being done in terms of you know whether it was right to be anywhere near that island at the time. In terms of safety work safe New Zealand of just released some intended prosecutions and court cases on We don't know any of the details of that, and it's probably just too early to make assumptions around where they feel improvements could be made, but I think, regardless for Lonnie and I We knew we were going to the most active volcano in New Zealand, and that was the draw. We didn't want to go to a dormant volcano. You know the chance of going to a active volcano and when you analyze the risk Off something happening when you're there. I would say that was, you know, relatively low risk. Obviously, that didn't quite pan out with us the way risk risk work. Sometimes it comes off and sometimes it doesn't but no one pulled the wool over my eyes around what we were going into. And little Arnie. I think you always wanted to be a vulcanologist. I mean, did he still want to be one geology has always been my passion. I loved volcanoes and earthquakes and rocks. And that's that's what I do. But for me, being a private school teacher has always been my passion. And interweaving. What I love into teaching is something I definitely I'm looking forward to doing and something I continued to do. Teaching volcanoes is what I love and kids love it as well. Has what happened that day. I mean, do you think it's changed your life, definitely in some ways, but I wouldn't change it for the world. It's made me stronger, and I think I was there for a reason to help those people. So I've made the best of that situation. That was a little Arnie and I was also talking to her father, Jeff, Little Arnie and Jeff Hopkins, remembering that volcano eruption a year ago and the ceremony that's been taking place today to remember those who died. "You're listening to shortwave from NPR. All Right Alison Win. Did you hear about the eruption. So I actually heard about it. would would have been evening time here so only within a few hours of the eruption because Myself and my students were paying attention engine to twitter and they announced the eruption before it was clear that there were people there So it was like two PM local time in New Zealand and and we were aware of it and then as we proceed to try and find out more about the eruption as when so much more information came out Allison Grettenberger vulcanologists who specializes in volcanic eruptions that interact with water. That's the type of eruption that occurred in New Zealand last week when the volcano fucker. You or white island erupted unexpectedly while people were during the island. As of this recording sixteen people have died in the police continue to search the island. Well it it was That erupted was sort of surprising because I I signed. My students volcano to Babysit with the purpose of them understanding that some volcanoes erupt all the time some up sort of by surprise so we were just just thinking about timing. And how you know. You don't anticipate these things even if you know. A volcano is active And then of course. When we found that people were there might I stump drops and I thought about a lot of my colleagues who who work in New Zealand and probably how much more intense that feeling for them and all all the uncertainty? So that's it was. There are a lot of emotions. I've been there myself.

"Four eight nine two two two and Jason you know what I regret to work going to white island with my twelve year old I was there four years ago now this recent week apparently a month ago seismologists were telling were warning that there was more rumbling that they they were expecting an eruption that wasn't taking place so far as I know when I went four years ago but now I just think there but for the grace of god go I I I I I think I'm the worst mother ever no no this is this is a part of travel we should talk about because when you go to these places you may not be aware of the danger as really giving you know it's a volcano when you know all those are unpredictable but I think we all have the assumption that well they wouldn't take me there if it was truly dangerous right right now and it's true and especially for cruises I wasn't on a cruise I was traveling around New Zealand with my two teenage daughters so we went out of our way to do this this wasn't at a cruise ship shore excursions it wasn't out better so you know someone had to take you by boat and guide you right it was an outfitter and it was one of the most fascinating days I've ever spent and for my daughter I think it was very educational for her her knowledge of of of geology and and science I mean she she really loved it but I feel I feel now what was I thinking it really was a crazy place to go but that's the way I you can feel about a lot of things in retrospect you know in the moment you probably didn't sense danger right well this is the second volcano I've gone to the Texas has exploded I guess I should also tell you I was in Guatemala and we'd hike to the top of this volcano we actually toasted marshmallows over stream of lava and that two exploded later see it think I'd learned my lesson of you know but it's debate I think some people say most of the time it's not erupting I'd like to see it and I know I know some people would say you're you're a risk taker for living in New York City for living in a an urban area not the New York is dangerous actually I think the FBI calls it the the safest large city in the US are they used to but you know he there is danger everywhere so if you are a good topic it is likely that if you wanted to talk about it give us a call eight hundred eight four eight nine two two two we have Lorraine from Belvedere New Jersey who's calling in on this matter he Lorraine thank you so much for calling all right hi I'm talking over my car shows I hope you can hear me we can yes I was in one of years ago when the IRA was kind of sneaking in and and making itself known yeah arms with some explosive and my young friend wanted to cut we were sitting outside of town we came back in and we were down in the Underground Victoria station and are we yes no what happened but they reversed all of the exchange so that we wind up you know how deep it is they're kind of right eight people were pouring out on the street I think he had it was at night time so I don't think anybody was injured but there was three stores that had been hit that night hi I have a young person would be out I was a little afraid for her and of course to get a cab was like impossible so it was a scary place to be yeah no absolutely well thank you for calling chase in you or your bread and butter is London Jason writes farmers yeah see guide to London the twenty twenty version is out do people still have to worry about safety there of that sort Londoners are a lot like new Yorkers they've they've been through it don't forget the bombings they had on the tube in the bus is a number of years back so there that was just the latest you know because the IRA had been doing its thing twenty five years before they have a lot of precautions there if you go into the two stops you won't see a trash can the way we have in New York City there's there's a there's a ring that holds a plastic bag and that's it so you can see if anyone at stock anything in there so I think they they're a little bit ahead of us in some ways in dealing with these not only that they have these precautions but they're not paralyzed yeah absolutely well thank you for calling Lorraine let's turn to hardly in New York City Harley your life in the former travel show thanks for calling hi thanks for taking my call I'm going to be traveling with my husband and my three teenagers and young adults to staying in January this January okay I am a book anything yet okay we're getting close to the wire and I was trying to figure out what would work well in terms of areas to visit we want to end up in Madrid because my daughter is going to be starting up are they are great yes it's very exciting so my oldest is twenty than I have eighteen and fifteen right now just trying to figure out what would work well they don't love museums you know they wanna be out having fun sure well absolutely although maybe forced them to go to one or two he forced them to go to the product so there are some really interesting companies out there there's one called in a non access I always want to call them that I do you know what I'm talking about Jason well and we took a kid's tour with them once which really was geared to did it was it was a private tour it would not access Rome or in a bath alright I will remember it and I will keep listening if I don't remember we're talking because we will will come out with it but they kind of geared it to the interests of my kids we did it to the Vatican and they showed us like a child size coffin which was fascinating and had all kinds of symbols on it which told my kids all about what life had been like that and how unusual it was to have had a coffin with symbols on it because usually a child in ancient Rome would been farmed out to the wet nurse and would not have been part of the family until he or she was around six years old because they assumed the young children died and so they they didn't want to get attached to them until they had gone through the dangerous years of early childhood so that's how Roman families of a certain wealth class would deal with this and so with that created a really fascinating dialogue with my kids and they forgot they were looking at art and and actually enjoyed their museum visit so that's something to do when I went to Paris two years ago I took a cooking class with my daughter actually we took two she enjoyed it so much and there are a lot of interactive experiences that you should be able to do I just was talking this week I'm doing an article for Frommer's dot com which is going to be up on hopefully next week on travel trends in there really using all of the data now that they collect to book two words to then shaped them to things that five people find more interesting and they're like little that there's companies like get your guide dot com that have a wealth of really interesting different types of activities in towards that you can do what do you mean if someone someone searches for a tour that may make the tour happened as a as a that's what I was at work no but that what they're doing is like that they have a a Harry potter tour in London they got middling reviews because people really wanted this tour to be more interactive so they let the tour company know that they were getting with negative reviews and now the tour starts people push their hands into a sorting hat and everybody on the tour becomes a member of a different house somebody's leather and I wouldn't want to be slow there and but and then they kind of compete with one another on Harry potter trivia so there's interesting types of tours in terms of where to go in Spain you're going to want to spend a good amount of time in Spain Spain is really blessed in that it has high speed rail that can zip you place is really fast so I would recommend going to Barcelona as well it has the oldest intact and largest gothic quarter in the world even if they're not museum folks to just wandering through the space that so ancient is really fascinating and I find that most people love seeing the gal decides because even kids will get into how wacky they are they at the architecture there and what he was trying to do let's see it's going to help so does also connected by high speed rail so submit also worth investing in that the southern Spain is a completely different flavor from the north yeah so you you can you can you can do I think either Barcelona or Seville by about two or three hours on the train yeah so easy to do it's not beach time so you you won't really be going to the the beaches but there are some interesting nature sites in Spain it's it's hard you know we we have a new Frommer's Spain out it just came out in the last month so it's the freshest book on the market and I think you'll find a lot of of of ideas and that does that help Harley besides Barcelona and so well with their any other location in screen that you think we should look from the jury you can go to to lado which was the old capital of Spain and that's fascinating and that's only about forty five minutes on the train from Madrid so that's a really great side trip it's a it's a big countries you can't buy it up to a big bite off too much you know way to get them interested get the guide book and maybe let them planet rather than you I did in Paris with my teenager last year and she came up with great stuff for us to see and do a lot of which I would have picked and she was invested in it so instead of complaining that I was dragging her places she dressed you yeah a good strategy have a wonderful time Harley thank you for your help you too let's talk to Dan in queens Dan your life in the former travel show nice to speak with you all of them click to speak to you so I'm not going to Australia to Sydney on January eighth and my question is should I go and get a good alley us policy that covers the weather and now having a lot of buyers out there so my question is should I go yeah it's a it's not a good situation in Sydney right now Sydney itself is not on fire but it's surrounded by forests that are filled with trees that are filled with oils like eucalyptus so they're going up and they're running out of water and the firefighters are exhausted and the smoke is actually covering Sydney to the degree that indoor fire alarms are sometimes going off because they sense the smoke the very system which separate wood Sydney is so famous is shut down on Sundays because the smoke is too thick and people are staying indoors so I think those are great reasons not to go to city right now I don't know if this will be will simmer down by the time January rolls around these have been going on for almost a month so I.

Tourists missing after deadly New Zealand volcano eruption

"So many of us woke up here in this tragic news of white islands located twenty nine miles off of new Zealand's North Island had erupted five people confirmed dead and eighteen injured and more than twenty people are thought to be missing police say there have been no signs of life from the island no more survivors are expected to be found rescuers have been unable to land on the island but they say a number of helicopters have passed overhead and they are asking that if anybody was on the island with misdirection to reach out to Chris Pleasants at mail online dot com so no signs of life after a volcanic eruption that happened at two eleven PM their local time there were an estimated fifty tourists around the crater eighteen survivors are evacuated some suffered severe burns there's been an estimated twenty seven people unaccounted for police say the number of messages in the double figures but refused to give an exact figure Australian prime minister Scott Morrison said twenty four Australians were visiting the island at the time of the disaster three Britons we don't know how many Americans rescuers have so far been unable to get onto the island because the land slides and for the Russians there are a number of rescue helicopters that are already trying to look and they didn't flying all all throughout the night their time officials said early Tuesday and that's Tuesday their time but no signs of life have been seen at any point and they are not expected to find anybody else alive which means the death toll could be as high as thirty two so this is what Corey what Corey is known as a white island twenty nine miles looking off new Zealand's in Northern Ireland they said the plumes of smoke and debris went about twelve thousand feet into the sky and I guess this is a very popular tourist attraction you see people involves taking pictures of this they were likely to be in a boat when this happened you see people trying to get into a vote from the island and the place is completely covered in ash for you know talking about is a real great island why is it a tourist site will it's a great because of the ash kids barely a beautiful island you just can't tell because there's absolutely so you want to see a video footage people screaming to get inside the vote right and to as they need to get away from the flames of the pools are a lot of scrambling lot of chaos and you know they say this is a very active volcano and so we're not sure why people would the I don't not sure why they would be tourists there if there was an active volcano Tony von former mayor of the nearby town of all cuddly said that a guide for the white island towards company was among those killed most of the Australians caught up in the disaster are thought to be passengers of the ovation of the seas cruise liner it departed Sydney last week speaking earlier Monday New Zealand prime minister Justin the ardour and said they were never chores from her country and overseas on the island at the time all royal Caribbean owner of a vision of the seas issue the same as in the ship would stay in the nearby port of Toronto overnight until we learn more about the situation some fairly wide island is new Zealand's most active volcano courts Daily Mail and had seen its last major eruption in two thousand was smaller events over the years officials said it's unlikely the volcano will erupt again in the next twenty four hours but obviously people are warned to stay away from I'm they're worried about tsunamis that can now happen earthquakes and other sorts of possible unrest geological hazard trekkers gill net is registered motor volcanic unrest on the island for weeks but the nature of organic activities and predictable with the eruption unforeseen so family there's a camera on the critters ram run by gill nets and they take pictures every ten minutes and you see a string of people visiting the crater the next shot taken into twenty was unreadable which means people were there at the crater when a blue so yes I crazy up really experts say that this was a disaster waiting to happen what island was always quote too dangerous for the number two was was in the aisles experts said and the warranty people of risa for the blast landslides they say emeritus professor ray costs from mo not universally branded the island as by its may ori Nemo cari quote a disaster waiting to happen for many years he said I've always felt there was too dangerous to allow daily tour groups that visit the uninhabited island by boat or helicopter nearly back in nineteen fourteen the small money committee on the island was wiped out because falling rocks weekend by the island's volcanic activity strip the village so they thought a Pacific plate that moved westward underneath the Indo Australian plate where New Zealand sits on the rock pushed underneath melts turns into macula fills with gases the hot rocks creek circulation patterns underneath volcano than sting breaks through the rocks a buildup of pressure accumulated direction sites in the rocks hold back the pressure breaks gas rapidly release and then you have the volcanic eruption so mining activities when bands of the island has been uninhabited now for more than a century but still a hot spot for to resell because of okay and she'll net news it was the logical hazard information center as far as what island as it was most active cold volcano only the top is visible with eighty percent under water so we'll keep you guys posted it is so tragic and again you just don't know why this was such an active tourist spot I mean I saw Dante's peak I am done these be they said they could pick up farmers and they could check for soul for in the water and there's like all sorts of stuff that they could do but apparently it's one of those things where it might have been you know like other boy cried wolf and so maybe they just kind of took it for granted so unfortunately as we hear
