Rebecca Solnit: Recollections of My Nonexistence

"Of my nonexistence. It's a profound book. It moved me deeply and let me say furthermore that this is the first time we're doing a show under these corona virus situations. I'm in my home. Rebecca's in her home and we're going to talk to one another without being able to see one another a real I for bookworm. Hi Rebecca Hello Michael. What do you mean by my nonexistence? I had the title before I wrote the Book and the book in some ways a reflection on it. It's most of all about all the forms of violence against women. The literal violence that leaves some women. Did some woman silent. Some woman pushed out of full participation in different social arenas but I also wrote about other social groups game in native people etc who face other kinds of erasure and I also wrote about reading as a positive form of non existence where you withdraw from your own life and your own physical being to enter another world and kind of float disembodied in somebody else's imaginings in somebody else's language. Wow let me say that as I was reading the book although I regard myself as I hope sensitive gay man I was made aware of how frightening it is used say at a certain point partially ironically that in your childhood your hobby was not getting raped. To what extent is that true. I-in it's completely true and I was really writing about my adolescence and early adulthood. We've had a really valuable and significant conversation. Last several years thanks to black lives matter and the response to the killing of Trayvon Martin about black parents giving talk to their sons about the dangers. They faced because of their race and gender. Most girls get different forms of the talk. Telling them often in roundabout evasive ways that they can't wear this. They can't do that. They can't aspire to this. They can't move freely. They can't go out at this hour. They shouldn't go to the party. They shouldn't have a drink and that it's entirely on them to prevent men from harming them and that society has no interest in taking responsibility for that but Democrat violence against women. So as young woman I had to constantly think about safety and strategy as I move through the world and every situation walking out in the world public transit meetings classes social situations parties Cetera and it was constant and it took a toll. I remember when I was first in college. This is around. Nineteen seventy the first feminist movements. Were starting in it in phone stickers. That said this exploits women but it wasn't yet clear that we were in a culture that exploits women altogether and that when I started to join gay men's liberation groups. We discovered how much we had grown up being teased being heard being disregarded in the language of the Normative Patriarchal Heterosexual Culture held one. Live in such a culture. You know I think if you add up those who are not male those who are not white. Those are not straight those who are not conventionally able bodied et CETERA. You end up with the majority of facing these forms of non existence. I think that you know it is a burden that people shouldn't have to carry That a lot of kinds of people carry these burdens and I wrote this book partly to try and home in on some of the nuances and complexities around gender. That I didn't feel we're talking about enough but I also wrote this book very much as a first person account of my formative years in San Francisco and gay men were a joy and support and inspiration in those years You know I lived about a neighborhood away. You know a fifteen minute walk from the Castro to see these men who had said we're going to refuse our assignment. We're going to refuse our role because we've decided it's worth paying the price rather than the price of avoiding who. We are and conforming. But I also WanNa talk about another form of non existence that really had an impact. "Through over. If it were doing. That's pretty good line though. The card says, yeah, no does. It's it's actually a beautiful font. So you got that raised, you know, you kind of put the gold on Zee, touch it feels very fancy that's from an anonymous man spoke at the forum, that's courtesy of q thirteen news and in white center. They've actually seen your words ring in my my head Mike Lewis they've actually seen overall drop in crime since they started the emphasis patrols, we're we're puzzling. This thirty days, Mike is elections. Open seats major Howard from the King County sheriff's office suck to thirteen. News community today is much safer. It's much more family friendly. It's not as edgy or as greedy as it used to be haven't. They. Seven days of of an emphasis patrol boat in happening. So that's a little bit out of context when he was talking about is that white center has become on sixteenth avenue has become an if you haven't been down that you really should every restaurant tour in Seattle recognized. What was going on in white center at in Burien and immediately have have set up shop down there? So it's actually become kind of this great restaurant row that ten years ago did not exist. That's what he's referring to. Yeah. And there is some good news out of white Senate. They are saying that during the emphasis patrol is getting better I have twenty eight years in the community so much safer much, more family friendly. It's not as gritty one of the Howard said. No. We just heard that. And they did put the synthesis patrol in there. So they are talking about that as well. As what Mike was saying role. Smith is a longtime landlord in the air. I think it's a little bit unfair that white center. Still kinda gets that reputation. Yeah. I used to live near white center. I liked my home there. The the funny. The thing about white center is this that when I first got to Seattle in two thousand I don't know maybe two thousand one I ended up doing a story on white center because white center desk was really that was when might send it was really doing very very poorly. And none of these restaurants that moved down there. No, no new apartments. No anything and white center. Kept asking to be incorporated in the cities that had bordered it every I remember, no one would really return their calls. I'm sorry. We're busy that weekend. Maybe another time, and then white center started developing in a con me and the situation it got cute and the situation reversed and everybody said, you know, what white center about that deal? Like, we'd love to incorporate you this this. They had a bad balance. And I did the numbers they hit a bad balance on tax base versus service demands. And the service demands were very high the tax base was very low that is not true anymore. We lived in south park. And but we used to say people say where you live up urinary. Oh, you wouldn't claim any kind of Burien area? Also, white said or no, no, no, no. We don't not white center. So is it south park. Let's might be south. But south park is incorporated in city Seattle does get the benefits there in white center is unincorporated. So so that was the problem in a kept asking like somebody. Please incorporates my favorite headline from this week about white center. It first one is white center sees crime dropped during the emphasis patrol. Then the second headline is white center keeps getting gayer. Okay. So you connecting the two some out. No just does how. And then the next one is biscuit on sixteenth avenues. Well. Absolutely. So the neighborhoods looking up, and then there is this this story about the emphasis patrol. Does anyone doubt that when there's more cops hanging out than area that people move that the criminals move we were talking about this during the break that sometimes the job in fighting crime is moving crime. I don't doubt that people said, wow, I would a day without my car being. Vandalized or my Bill as a business owner. I wanted we didn't. Hey, where's the shoplifters? It's like the the Halloween candy candidates. Hey, we're not getting trick or treaters. We didn't get any shoplifters today. I don't doubt this work. You know? Absolutely. I mean, that's part of the reason that that some police departments have switched back in Seattle PD is low on officers at this particular point have switched back to a lot more foot patrol work because it's not because that makes anyone particularly happy except the citizenry because they like seeing police out there. They like seeing the cars parked in the neighborhoods. They feel like that is always like people who are going to do something bad see that. And maybe they're just gonna do something bad.

And and so that was a sort of thing where like when I found that as a baby feminist like I did have an internal meter because I know literally could assumed to be like, wow, this a little bit crazy. But I also looked at like, I look at the people who are learning about feminism now and how it's really hard to navigate that that ground of like, okay? How do I be more sensitive who do I listen to because there's so many different voices? I know you can't listen to that person. You can't listen to that person. No artists in this area is good right? Sort of thing. It seems to me that what your calling for here. It is a conversation that a lot of progressive white people must be I actually have thought about culture, problematic culture and people of color. But then when it gets you, but. It it feels like to me the thing that you're talking about is a is a process that happens a lot of time just internally individual like newly woke quite person. And also in these fairly narrow. Self defined communities of on online feminist. Yeah, in, and I think that the reason I also specify white people is that every time I see discussion about problematic culture in whether or not we should consume it. I'm reminded of something that a friend of mine who's block said, which is that those conversations are almost always about white people whether or not a well-meaning white person could consume it because people of color and other March is people have had no other choice, but to consume problematic culture for most of the history of this country. Like, they don't have the luxury being. For instance, rap music that has a lot of problematic stuff, that's their music. Yeah. And it's like, I don't I don't. Yeah. Yeah. It's problematic. Sure. But it's also the thing that is there. Yeah. Right. And it's the the quandary of like will they finally got movie starring black leads that were successful, right and stuff and the ones like media. Yeah. You get the. Like, the Black Panther superhero movie that finally does well and stuff. And so there's the sense that like, oh, you probably shouldn't call it problematic in any way. Because Hollywood might look at that. And or I would I would say when sort of the message that I got from that conversation was it's not so much. We shouldn't call it out as problematic. It's that win your cultural consumption is so narrowly defined because you just it. Most of the culture is not for you, you either consuming things that are not for you and have to kind of blow by problematic because you already understand that this is this is a a film that is like hetero normative. This is a film that is white center. This is a film that has all centered on people that aren't you? But you want to go to the movies. So yeah, you're going to consume it..

Neighbors like Evelyn and Pam rushed in to help. I think. I don't even know all those helping hand salvaged and cleaned. What was safe to do inside? The tree's been and debris hauled away the holes in the roof for now protected with a tarp, and Eric is being housed and fed by neighbors and family. Do I had no clue but stepping inside the only home she's known for fifty one years it hits her out. No. But I have lots of neighbors friends. Wonderful. Wonderful to be the hard part. Now, she's in a holding pattern. The tree can only be removed by crane cutting it up without that support could damage the house more the seventy eight year old is hoping kindness will strike again. Enter tree cutter, we'll find Ukraine soon. It's a scattered believe tomorrow's gonna be better. Tomorrow is gonna be wonderful at crane so important because her house is not safe to live in until this tree is gone. And from what we've learned cranes really hard to come by. We'll get to your traffic and weather here just about a minute. I the maker of shingle wrecks and the shingles vaccine that's in short supply around the nation is offering reassurances now that complaints about shortages are starting to come from congress, Dr Freedland, a vice president of Glasgow. Glaxo Smith Kline says, the problem is shingles is common and demand for shingles is high given that it's so common and that they're such great demand for the vaccine, we are experiencing some shortages in doctor's offices pharmacies..

"Okay. So you know, I love to be in the kitchen, love the cook. My one weakness I think is with desert the one problem that I have with desserts happens to deal with the frosting and the icing, the decoration presentation. All of that. I try a lot of recipes at home for my own frosting and icing, but they never seem to work for the icing. Tried that powdered sugar with milk and vanilla thing. It always comes out runny gloppy gooky and then I try the cream cheese. One in the mixer also doesn't look what happens to the cream cheese one. It never really become spreadable. Like I always even though I keep it at room temperature, I always feel like it's still clumps up and never has a great consistency. And the taste is always just not there. So how can I make really good frostings in ice things at home? I agree with you. Powdered sugar icing pretty off. Yeah, really? Sometimes you can like orange juice to it or something. But I, I don't orange. They never turn out now. I don't like him chocolate frosting always works nicely because the chocolate cools it sets up. I like it Italian meringue or Swiss meringue, which means you beat egg whites, and then you heat up sugar and get a sugar hot sugar syrup. Like at two thirty nine to forty, the temperature doesn't actually matter that much and then you drizzle it on the white center beating them in the mixer for about two three minutes. And that gets you a nice, fluffy frosting. That'll hold nicely just straight meringue a day or so. It's not that hard to do, but do you have another? No, I was just gonna say the boiled frosting which is sort of similar valves, egg whites, which is sugar water egg whites vanilla and cream of tartar. But the thing about the Italian. So you add the sugar syrup to the whites. There's also the Swiss where you heat up the sugar in f- whites in it about one sixty. Those are a little tricky. You want an easier recipe for frosting is sue. That's where I would prefer to start. Kind of build it. My confidence then start working with something a little bit more advanced, the cream cheese frosting though. That's gonna give you a good texture, and that's going to hold really well to. Okay. And I wonder if maybe that's more technique issue with me and not maybe really knowing how to work with my of a hand mixer or stand mixer standing exter- in what happened..

"It's like, you don't have, you know, and they kinda know they sorta, no, you put white center. I'm like, what. That's weird. Yeah. And so. Anyway. So I figured out today, you know, I bought Canadian bacon. So regular bacon, she doesn't really like bacon. She's already like health conscious and she's like, I don't wanna eat too much of, you know this and that. And so anyway, I got Canadian bacon and she loved it and she kept putting eggs on the Canadian bacon. I'm like, okay, there we go. I figured out a way for her. Yeah, right. The other thing too. Sometimes she'll want a piece of toast with the egg and she'll eat it in combination. Okay. Figured out ways to get her to eat some eggs in the morning, which is huge because now now now she has more options. I can make her French toast. I can make pancakes. I know that she's her eggs and have a glass of milk with it too. And it's like, man would a huge difference that is we, we really kind of counterbalance and counteracted this giant thing sugar that she was wanting automo- night. How have you noticed that the kids demeanor has changed throughout the day if you feed them? Good breakfast. So notice that. But yeah, yeah, no, it's it's huge. It's it's a huge difference. I mean, they're going off to school a lot of times, but sometimes on the weekend, I'll cook breakfast for them to what I noticed is that they're not hungry. So you know, we were just like any other American family. We, we've allowed our kids to eat whatever. Whenever here in there right when if my kids go out to eat and we have dinner. Let's say like five o'clock or something like that. And let's say that they have. They have the worst things ever to for children like these kids. They need to be outlawed. Percent? Yeah, honest. And why is there? First of all? Why is kids food? Yeah. Yeah, human food, human being a different portions don't need their category of food known. What's sad is infants. Do not cannot right. Yeah. Yeah. Like you said, it's it's crap food and you can. It's in my opinion. You look at it from a business standpoint, it's just a straight profitability because carbs are so much cheaper than protein, and and so it's like, oh, I mean, like, you know, what is ten cups of rice costs, Chinese restaurant, like forty, five cents. Yeah, you know, as much as you want, and that's really, I think, what it comes down to these kids menus. They're not gonna eat it anyway. We'll make it a little bit cheaper if my kids have like a grilled cheese sandwich. And usually the option for carbohydrates come with the grilled cheese sandwich is French fries. So my kids, you know, they might have a grilled cheese sandwich and French fries. First of all, it's not a meal that doesn't really represent food that much. I mean, just five grams of protein. It's just credit card. Yeah, just kinda just kinda crap, you know, and it's responsible as a parent. I think that as a parent, you should be kinda pissed that your kids eating that you should look at it and be like, okay, this is hopefully as a one time thing and we need to get. We need to get this in check or if we're doing this once a week, it's a different story doing it. Once a month is a different story. If it's not part of the norm and it's a different story and that's fine because he wanted kids to be kids and you want them to kind of do their own thing and not feel weird about the food. They're eating all the time, but the what I've noticed from them as. They'll eat that like five o'clock, right? It'll be five thirty. We came home from a restaurant, whatever, or even six or so. And like, what are we having for dinner? And I'm like, just like you just ate and but they didn't get any nutrients. They get anything that they needed. They got nothing of what they needed. And so that there, of course, they're hungry again, that's what causes obesity. Obesity is a nutrient deficient disease you would think it'd be the opposite? Yeah, you'd think you'd think the nutrients would be an abundance and that's what we're having. That's the problem that's facing America. Today was facing a lot of children..
