City leaders are spending more on fire prevention, especially in the steep and wooded neighborhoods in the hills. And they're begging homeowners to clear flammable vegetation on their properties. KQED is Raquel Maria Dillon has more Berkeley officials chose to announce the new influx of funding to the fire department at the Fire station closest to Tilden Park. 96. Years ago, a fire started just east of here in Wildcat Canyon wind blew it over the hill and down through the twisting streets, destroying about 600 homes. Now the fire department is getting $12.5 Million for fire prevention thanks to a voter approved ballot Measure, Council member Susan Went graph represents this neighborhood today, with the intensity and speed of wildfires increasing dramatically. And the increase in population. It's impossible for me to imagine the devastation if that same fire were to happen today.
