"Schulman, play by play man on ESPN radio this fall, you hear him on the playoffs, you'll hear him on the World Series and of course you see him on Toronto Blue Jays broadcast play by play man and he was at the game last night, a great game Dan, Yankees, Blue Jays, going down to the bottom of the tenth inning stars involved, managerial decisions, everyone watching Aaron judge. It felt like a playoff game, buster. It really, really did. I mean, the Yankees had a magic number of one to clinch the division, the Blue Jays are trying to clinch a playoff spot. Aaron judge had 60 homers. It was a big lively crowd, and then all of the strategy in the tenth inning as you talked about and intentional walk on one side, no intention to walk on the other side. And Vladimir Guerrero junior coming up with the big hit in a game that the Blue Jays really needed. They would dearly love to be home for the first round of the playoffs and a win last night's another step in that direction. I'm going to ask you about Aaron judge, but first about the Blue Jays, it feels like in a year in which there have been so many inconsistencies where you're trying to figure out what's the bedrock of this team. Like they're kind of coming together as we get down the stretch here. Yeah, I think that's fair. They've never really had a stretch buster where offense and pitching have clicked at the same time for more than a few days. You know, there have been times where the offense has been great and they look like last year. And then there have been times where the offense cooled off a little bit. And the bullpen carried them, or then the starting pitching carried them for a while. But it does feel like they're closer to everything coming together now than they have before. They're a very good team. And I think they're a very dangerous team. Should they get into the playoffs, which looks like it'll be a formality. They're without a couple of players. Lourdes guriel junior, Santiago espinal. They're on the IL, but their depth has come through. You know, Whit merrifield has had some big games for them. Danny Jansen has had some big games for them. And I think they feel good about things. If they can get and maybe last night's game winning hit is something. If they can get vladi really going, you know, like he did last year. That's a game changer for them. That gives them an Aaron judge type bat in their lineup. And I think they feel very good with Alec mino and Kevin gausman up at the top of the rotation. Yeah, and I feel like that the way their path is beginning to take shape in the postseason. They're going to host a first round in Toronto. It looks like which would be awesome. We know how great the crowds are there. And then the second round, if you catch the Houston Astros, why view is the prohibitive favorites in the American League because of how good their pitching is. I want to catch them in a best of 5. Yeah. So it's interesting. The Blue Jays have lost the tiebreaker to both Seattle and Tampa Bay. So they've got to finish ahead of them in order to finish ahead of them. If you know what I mean. So I think there are two and a half up on the rage three up on the Mariners. So driving home last night do with the math, like I'm sure you would if you were in my situation if the Blue Jays go four and four. The rest of the way, Seattle has to go 8 and two, Tampa Bay has to go 7 and two. I think my math is right on that. It's not impossible. It looks like the Blue Jays will host, but it's not impossible. But the other thing is, say they get down to the last day of the season and there were game up. Do they throw Alec mino in that game to get home field? That has been a big conversation piece here because John Schneider has said a lot of different things are under consideration for that last day. So if you're a Blue Jays fan, you want them two games clear of Tampa Bay in Seattle heading into the last day of the season just so there's no temptation to use Alec manoa. Obviously for them to have a chance to win a play. Their best chance to win a playoff series is to have Alec Manila stark game one of that series. So the funny thing about the Blue Jays in Houston too. And I don't love this. They played all 6 of their games against each other in April on back to back weekends. They have not seen each other for 5 months. But, you know, again, the Blue Jays are one of these teams. They could go to and out, and they could get hot and they could roll people. Like they've got that much talent. So, but I'm hoping it's at home. 45,000 people at roger center sounds like fun to me. All right, one of the big talking points in a once we get into these rounds of the postseason will be about the right handed nature of the Toronto lineup and if they face Houston, that potentially be an issue Toronto's excuse me, Houston's loaded with right handed starters. How do you see the Blue Jays adjusting to that? I remember at the time that the trade deadline we talked about how did that point and I'm sure this held the Blue Jays probably had seen the most number of matchups that were deemed unfavorable without the platoon advantage, yes. Exactly. By a mile by a mile, it's not even close. I think they kind of are who they are to be honest with you. Now there are certain times rymel choppy is in the lineup. There are certain times cabin visio is in the lineup. But if Lourdes guriel junior gets hot and if Whit merrifield stays hot, you could have an all right hand hitting lineup in playoff games. You really could, you could have Alejandro Kurt DH and Danny Jansen catching in some games. You know, the other thing with Houston, you're going to see and we're getting ahead of ourselves here, but you would see a from birth all day, right?

"whit merrifield" Discussed on The Lead

"Last few weeks, few teams in baseball have been hotter than the very talented previously disappointing and suddenly surging Toronto Blue Jays. And now Janssen rushes another one. His second home run of the night, another rocket. And it is 20 7 to three. Today, we're joined by the athletics Caitlin McGrath to look at why this team was a letdown to the point that they had a fire their manager while they had a winning record. In three key factors that have helped power their turnaround, including an emerging young ace with a lot of swagger. In a new manager with a surprising knack for keeping things lively in the Clubhouse. We walked into the car house and there's a DJ in the middle and he's spinning beats and playing Justin Bieber remix it and all this kind of stuff. So it was really fun. It's definitely a new thing walking into the Blue Jays Clubhouse and seeing a DJ. That's a first and it was first for me and I think it was a first for most of the players. Plus, with the young superstars Vladimir Guerrero junior and Bo Bichette both not living up to their own high standards, is there still hope for a big finish? From wondery, I'm Tiffany oshinsky. It's Friday, August 5th, and this is the lead. Caitlin McGrath, welcome back to the lead and thanks for taking the time to join us during this totally not hectic week at all in Major League Baseball. Yes, thank you for having me back. Of course, I'm happy to be here to talk about the Blue Jays again. It's been a hectic week. I'm in Tampa right now. I'll be heading to Minneapolis next for four games against the twins who made some noise at the trade deadline as well. So it should be an interesting stretch for the Blue Jays and the rest of the American League. Oh yeah, definitely. Well, let's take a minute to talk about the trade deadline before we get into the story of this blue Jay season. And the trade deadline, which we know took place on Tuesday, the Jays did not make the same big splash as a team like the Padres, but then again, no one really did. So can you quickly tell us what Toronto got done? Yeah, of course. So the Blue Jays did not make a splashy type of deal as the Padres did. And honestly, not like the Blue Jays did a year ago when they acquired Jose brioche, who was one of the best starters on the market. So the Blue Jays had a bit of more of an understated deadline. I think they improved at the margins without making maybe that huge blockbuster type deal. So overall they added four players, Mitch white, who was kind of a swingman type pitcher who can start who can come out of the bullpen from the Dodgers. They added two relievers from the Marlins, Anthony bass, and Zach pop, who was a Canadian bonus coming back to his hometown team and as well as Whit merrifield, which kind of came out of left field, honestly. There's a lot to unpack with that acquisition, which I'm sure we'll get into, but I think that these deals all complement the roster, but for me, what it really underlines is obviously this front office thinks they've got a good core and exciting young core capable of being one of the most dangerous teams. And so these pieces raise the floor a little bit, but it's really up to the team that they have already assembled to raise that ceiling. So let's talk about what merryfield. He's probably the most notable name that they added in a lot of ways. And maryfield came from Kansas City and he literally could not play in Toronto in July because he wasn't vaccinated. He is now confirmed that he is vaccinated, but pretty interesting that they traded for this guy in the first place. You're right, it was kind of an unexpected move because all along, just covering the Blue Jays and following this team and knowing the circumstances around entering the country and all this kind of stuff has been a storyline that we've had to follow all year. So almost all of us covering the Blue Jays just completely ruled out any unvaccinated players because you assume they're not going to go after them because why would the team acquire a player that might not be able to play half the games in Toronto? The Blue Jays, again, we have to remember if we were looking down into the future, they're wanting to play for that top wildcard spot, and that top wildcard spot, the reward for getting the top wild card spot is that you would host a three game series all at home. So they want all their players to be there available. Well, let's talk about the team now as we mentioned at the top, this team has been playing much better lately. And we want to look at three key reasons why. So start at the beginning, what were the expectations for the Blue Jays coming into the season? Yeah, the blue cheese had really high expectations. Based on how they performed last year, especially down the stretch, they ended up winning 91 games last season, which fell just one win short of qualifying for the postseason. So disappointing end, but that seemed to fuel them a lot, to want to come back stronger. And so that I think was one of the sort of main motivations for them, looking at we looked like a dangerous team last year. No one wanted to face us down the stretch because we looked like we could make some noise in the playoffs. So this year we don't want to have that history repeat itself. So the expectations, of course, they were to make the postseason, but they were even higher than that. I think this blue Jay scene was talking about. We want to be World Series winners. We want to be World Series contenders. We want to win a hundred games. Then I should add, it was coming from the Clubhouse in the room. But if you looked at pre season picks from baseball experts in the media industry as a whole, a lot of people were picking the Blue Jays to be the favorites as well. And when I bumped into a member of the Yankees organization, I said, yes, what have you seen in the blue Jays? And he looked at me Riley said, oh, you mean the world champion? Because everybody's picking them because they look so great at the end of last season. So it wasn't just them in the room saying we can do it. It was everyone looking around the league and saying this Fuji team looks like it's going to be one of the best. When you look at those expectations, what were the main things that went wrong for this team during the first half of the season? Yeah, I think the main overarching thing for the Blue Jays this year has been a general lack of consistency and what I mean with that is a bit twofold and that they've had inconsistent periods with their offense, for example, in April and May, they got off to a really, really slow start offensively. And it was kind of mind boggling because you looked at this lineup and how many stacked hitters they had in this lineup and they just were not scoring at the rate that we thought they would score. And then finally they started to score, but then they had some struggles with their rotation and they had struggles with our bullpen and this kind of continued on until honestly it led up until that really terrible road trip they had on the West Coast where they went one in 6. They lost a serious to the Oakland a's, one of the worst teams in baseball. They were swept over four games by Seattle, which was a team that was chasing them for wild card spot. Simultaneous to this, they were also dealing with some really tragic circumstances, their first base coach, his daughter, died unexpectedly. So they were dealing with a lot of this stuff. Things were not going well. And eventually they came back to Toronto and the front office decided to fire Charlie Montoya. Their manager, who had been their manager since 2019. We do have some breaking news now on the Toronto blue Jays, the team has fired manager at Charlie montoyo. So Jamie, what more can you tell us about this? Well, I can tell you that 87 games into this baseball season, the Blue Jays have made a decision that a lot of fans had been hoping they would make in recent weeks. So the manager changes the first key piece of this turnaround that we want to look at. So Toronto had a winning record with Charlie Montoya this year, but they fired him anyway. And the guy who took over as manager is John Schneider, a former Blue Jays minor league catcher. How would you say his style is different than Montoya's and what kind of impact has he had on this Clubhouse? Yeah, he's definitely a different personality inventory on Montoya was more, I guess he was more of an introvert. So where's John Schneider? Is definitely more loose, definitely more of a big personality, very chatty, very

"So, you know, to me, I like when teams do something, I think it's important. It helps the Clubhouse and I think the Phillies did a nice job, but you're right, it's not going to be easy. They're going to have to beat out when those central teams, and that's okay. Anytime you're trying to climb three or 14 to get to one of the spots, it's going to be tough. It's going to be tough because that means you're going to need all four of those teams to not play well down the stretch. And I don't see that happening with the teams that are in front of them. And other trades, by the way, that took place throughout the league. I mean, the Blue Jays. The Blue Jays are playing some good baseball as of late, they're going for this play. I'll spot. And they acquired yesterday, former hits leader Whit merrifield. Why is that funny and kind of interesting? Merrifield's already missed three games in Toronto due to not being vaccinated, but he did express that he possibly would be willing to get vaccinated if he goes to a contender. Listen, this is not a vax debate that we're about to have, but real quick. What does this say about the Kansas City Royals if maryfield wouldn't get vaccinated for the team that he was with? Well, you know what? Let me talk on this. You know, they had ten guys. So obviously that's not good. But I will say this. This is an individual choice. I didn't make that choice. I'm vaccinated. And I have to be for work, but I would do it anyway. We're not going to get into a vexed debate. But, you know, I mean, if the Kansas City Royals were the Alberta royals or something in Canada, we would have to get vaccinated. You know, the fact that he's now, we assume going to get vaccinated, it's because he's going to be with the blue jet. If he went somewhere else, I don't think he'd get vaccinated, right? You know, so I don't blame the royals for each individual one. It doesn't look good that they attend. I will give them credit as a team though because they wore it. You know, they said, all right, we got ten guys. They're unvaccinated. They're going on the restricted list. We're going to call up these minor leagues and let the chips fall where they may. Some of these guys had minor injury. I'm not going to name their names. Minor injuries and they beg to go on the injured list. So they wouldn't be outed as having been unvaccinated. They didn't want to discuss it. They didn't want to do anything to do with it. They wanted to be be on the injured list and move away from the subject and miss more games. Even though, you know, some of them did have some injury, but not enough to go on the injured list. The royal management said, no, we're going to wear their sense of organization. You guys are unvaccinated. You're not going on the injured list for this. You're going to be on the restricted list. And we're going to go up these minor leaguers. So as an organization, I give them credit for doing that. But to convince these guys to be vaccinated, I think, you know, I understand if someone's going to chastise the royals for not doing a good job, and look the Yankees got everybody vaccinated. They had many that didn't want to do it. And they got everyone did it. So I guess famously famously unvaccinated. Exactly. You would say. Exactly. So I give them credit, but I'm not going to kill the royals because they have a bunch of guys on their team that didn't want to do it. That's America. 30% of the people who are not vaccinated. That is true. That is true, Tony. Tony, what are your thoughts on Whit merrifield to the Blue Jays do you think he could help this team win? I think he can help this team win. And listen, I think you hit on it in the beginning. He did he did kind of say if the scenario was right that he make it reconsider. And so the trade has been made. I assume the Blue Jays got did their homework and know what's coming after this so that they can actually use them. But I think he could certainly help. I mean, what merrifield is a baseball player, man. He can hit, he can do a little bit of everything. As you mentioned, he was a hits leader on multiple occasions. This guy can play some ball and an addition like that. In a lineup that already is immensely talent, a talented, he certainly can help that ball club. Are there any other trades that took place that have kind of caught your guys eye or ear? I imagine. Oh, go ahead, go ahead. I got one. The Astros, the most, the moves they made. I thought were good. I had done a hit a couple of weeks ago and they'd asked me, and I was like, you know, you know, they don't need a whole lot, but I could see them adding a bat in that lineup. I mean, it's not the astrals of what 2015, you know, they had a whole bunch of stars in there. But this is a good ball club with terrific pitching, and they get Mancini. I thought, I thought that was a really, really quality sneaky good move that you can add that type of bat in that lineup already with Alvarez and Bregman, two way and all the other guys Tucker, the guys who've been playing well. I thought that was a sleepy, sneaky move right there by the ASTRO. Yeah, I'm right. I'm with Tony on that one. I mean, those are the two players the mets should have gotten. Vasquez, I mean, they're catchers have like a 5 ten OPS. Vasquez is a good two way player and they got him for two unranked. I mean, again, we don't know exactly what the prospect rankings are worth, but they're not in the top 30 on the Astros, but we're not and they got Vasquez. I understand he's a rental. You're not going to give up the world for him, but to me that was a player for the mets and same with the Mancini buck Adam in Baltimore. Great player inspirational player can play a little outfield, can play first base perfect for them and hedges them on Brantley's injury and also guriel not having the year that everybody expected off of the batting title. I thought Houston, I think Houston is a great team to begin with and they got even better and they stole the two players that met should have gotten. Yep, I agree with you on that. I do like the Houston moves, obviously Trey Mancini, I'm a huge enormous fan of. So I'm looking very forward to seeing him in a playoff race. Castillo over to Seattle is something I'm very excited to see. And I did mention this is a kind of a low key one, but Iglesias from the angels over to the braves, I think that's a good arm to throw in that bullpen. On the same day that they sneakily traded Will Smith over to Houston as well.

"An extended match up there where they could potentially play a lot of games in Toronto, but anyway, that was sort of surprising because I think one of the initial news items in the wake of the royals just everyone being unvexed revelation was that teams were out of the Ben intended market now or even specifically the Yankees were and that was not the case, I guess. You know, maybe he was listening to team leader Whit merrifield, who said, yeah. If what was standing between me and the playoffs was this vaccine, I'd consider getting it. Exactly. I didn't say I would get it for another team or wouldn't get it for this team. It was a simple point I was showing about. How much I value playing in the playoffs? Yeah. So the other interesting thing is that the Yankees wanted in Japan attendee, despite already having Joey Gallo, I know that both of those guys were in the lineup. I believe in the first game that Ben intended was with the Yankees, playing the royals, which is kind of awkward, I guess, although maybe it saved him plain fair, I don't know. But that is interesting just because entering the season, you probably would have said, well, I'd rather have Joey Gallo than independent attendees. So now Gallo is probably on the market, which that's got to be an interesting trade discussion too. It's like, hey, do you want Joey Gallo? We are a contending team, and we just traded for someone we've like better, it seems than Joey calls. So what will you give us for Joey Gallo? The guy that we are contending team no longer really want to play. But it's interesting because even if you go by the projections like Joey Gallo still projects to be as good or probably better than that, right? Like just going by the fangraphs depth charts offensive projections right now Gallo still has a higher projected WRC plus than been attendees, so you could say this has been like the worst possible Gallo that we could imagine and the best possible been intended. Ben intendi has a 360 two babbitt this year. He has a high batting average, especially in this era. He's got a good on base percentage, but very little power, and so if the batted ball stopped bouncing as well, then, you know, maybe that value falls a little bit and if Joey Gallo could regain any of his former gallows, then he could be good again, but apparently the Yankees are betting on that, not being the case. It seems like so it's like, well, we got swept by the mets. Let's make a deal. Let's get intimate attendee. I mean, it meant that they didn't have to get Tyler naquin. Yeah, right, I guess. I guess that's good. That's the guy you get when you win that series when you're sweep. Right, you're like, what's that? We don't really need Ben intended. We swept cherry on top of this is the naquin. Yeah. So like what are the odds, though, that Ben and T out produces Gallo for the rest of the season? I know Gallo has looked very bad. And he hasn't really struck out way more than he has struck out in the past, which is a ton. But he just hasn't hit the bowl as hard and I guess he hasn't been quite as selective and maybe he's been pressing a little bit. And so, you know, like Joey Gallo has always been a low average slugger, but now he is a low average guy who is slugging three 39 and also his average is one 59. So even as isolated power is not that great, even if you're Joey Gallo, you probably need to bet above one 60. To make things work. Even in 2022, so it hasn't been great, but he has a track record of being quite a good hitter for quite a while. He is, I believe, the same age, basically, as been intended, so it's kind of an interesting swap, like they didn't trade them one for one or anything. But if it's the Yankees are saying, well, we traded four galo last year, and now we have decided that we want the Nintendo instead, I wonder how big the actual true talent difference between them is. I know I'm not supposed to believe in this because before I work in all, but is it can he does not play in New York? That doesn't sound like you can't play in New York Gallo. It doesn't seem like he doesn't seem like a comfy spot for him now. It's like the path you've got here, right? It felt like he'd be good, but he just struggled at the start and people seem to really not like him. Yeah. I remember talking about like when he first got there, I think we talked about in this podcast like how was Joey Gallo not here before, right? Because he was like immediately embraced and the whole Italian thing. Getting the great photo of him. Hey. Yeah, right. And it was like, oh, Joey Gallo, he's destined to be a great beloved Yankee, and then, no, not so much. Yeah. Yeah, I was ready to be doing like, hey, I'm slugging here. Years and years, and then it just didn't work out. I think the line from Dan's right up of this trade that I found the most like, oh, is that Gallo has been about 80% more likely to swing at an out of zone pitch this season than he was last season? I mean, you brought up the pressing point. I think that we can look at last year and attribute some of his underperformance after the trade to weird bab stuff, but it does seem like the approach has fallen apart in a pretty meaningful way when the margins around contactors then is his, I don't know, I don't know that this trade, I don't know that they had to replace Gallo to matter in the postseason. This is the Yankees team from 2022. They're really good. And I don't know if Ben and tinny. But yeah. You know, like makes a super meaningful difference, but I think that given what little they gave up from a prospect perspective, particularly for an organization that just seems to be able to churn out good pitching prospects whenever they want to. If you think that this is a marginal upgrade, I think that's fine. And he's been intended was apart from Soto, like, probably the best outfield that available question mark. Yeah, maybe. Yeah, I mean, I saw that some people were saying like, oh, he fits well in that lineup because they have all these sluggers and this is a guy who will set the table and he's just more of a contact guy and gets on base and everything and Aaron Boone was asked about that and he said it's fake news. You said it's fake news that we have too many power hitters too many sluggers that's fake. We've got savages in the lineup and really good hitters been intended a great hitter. Boone I think to his credit has consistently over the years refuted the idea that like having a lot of power hitters is bad necessarily. I know at the margins, if you were to simulate it, there might be something to like if you had a bunch of low average high strikeout high power type guys in the lineup all back to back to back, maybe there would be some marginal disadvantage to that, but when most of the hitters are as good as the Yankees are, then it probably doesn't matter all that much, but just some of those guys haven't been hitting a flight like the Yankees offense has been slumping the Yankees as a whole have been slumping. That's fine.

"But the rangers were both diligent in explaining it and clear that overall they were trying to establish a clear team first culture and so everyone being vaccinated just fit in with that. And so it's hard not to fault the royals like whatever messaging they were doing. I mean, maybe they just happened just happened to acquire a bunch of extremely stubborn players, but you got to think that maybe the messaging was not what it could have been. So it's got to be disappointing for royals fans. One of many disappointing things for them. Yeah, and you know, especially when it's not just going to affect this series, but, you know, it's going to have an impact on, I mean, it's going to have an impact on the trade deadline, right? Of course. Yeah, there's already been some reporting about that, right? Not interested in interbank attendee anymore. Yeah, they're like, no, we're not we're not doing this because we're here to win, you know? So it is going to continue to have ripple effects within that organization that extend beyond this series or even this season where they were in a position where they could either help their team win now or they could no, it's not the, you know, I don't think that Andrew benintendi is like obligated to think about his own trade value, but it would be naive to assume that this isn't going to have an effect on the future fortunes of the royals, even if marginally, right? So it's disappointing. Yeah. They might have to hang on to Whit merrifield. Yeah, gosh. You really, really should have traded him before now. So I guess the silver lining at least for some people involved in this situation is that as there's a ripple effect where the royals call up a bunch of players from triple-A and then other guys get promoted presumably from lower levels to triple-A. I think they're going to be many major Uyghurs to meet. I think they're going to be maybe three royals making their major league debut in the lineup, so that's something. And that may be leads us into a meet a major leaguer segment that we wanted to do here. And we had already pre selected players who I think will fit thematically with this conversation and you picked a royal. Fortunately, you picked right. You looked out. He didn't get one of the anti vaxxers. Oh man. Yes, you are major leaguer to me. Meet a major leaguer I am very eager to meet this place and major leaguers it's the thrilling debut of somebody new let's make this mysterious major league. My

At some point, we'll have our fantasy. M V P discussion. I mean, Otani, Cedric moans. Somebody tweeted out that Adam Wainwright. Adam Wainwright should be in the conversation for pictures. Yeah, Another one picks late. I've got them everywhere. I've got him on all my teams. I'm not saying I knew he was going to do this to this extent. But I thought what he did last season and not two month period was legit. He's the number 11 pitcher on our player number 11, and if you take out closers like Liam Hendriks and glaciers, he's like number eight. Amazing. Adam, Wait. How do you explain Adam Wainwright? Because he wasn't even drafted on ESPN leagues this year, or he was like a last round pick last round Pick. That's the thing. He's a little in the National League, too. He's a little to the National League. What Cedric Meulensteen's bed to the American League where, even if he wasn't a drafted player in your league, he was picked up almost instantaneously after the season began, and you've reaped the benefits of it. You mentioned him on the show. I mentioned what I saw in him late in spring training. I roasted them in a couple of places, so I'm happy with the results. I've been getting usually in the national the NL only leagues. In spring training. He had adjusted to the diminished stuff, and he's mixing his pitches a lot better than he was, and that's making a lot of the difference from and he's been a durable guy. I mean, the fact is, they don't have to worry about pitch counts. I think that helps. I think he's been prepared to throw a high number of innings that there would have been nice. It would have been nice if they had removed them after eight innings yesterday and not allowed to more runs in the ninth inning. I understand pitch camping what, but by the way is a guy got on base. I would have taken amount going to Gallegos, who saved it, but You mentioned since we're going into all the facts, he said, for the player to race, the points Leaderboard is not even a close race whatsoever. It's been dominated by showing Itani so I'm going to give you my really neat and Gigi stat on him. He has nine players who have more batting fantasy points this year. Do you know how many batters have more than Otani is pitching point just his pitching points as a pitcher. Only 44 hitters have had more points than Otani has had as a picture. It's It's it's historic season. He's the M V P of the American League. I mean black Guerrera Guerrero has future MVP seasons in them. Yeah, it's amazing to me, but every time he has to win M v P. I understand. The Angels are making the playoffs. Blue Jays still can, but I mean happy to not be Otani National League. I mean, I think he's I think the teeth will be the MVP of the national, don't you? In real life. I think I think that the N L M v p could be a very close race. I actually do think that if the Padres don't make the playoffs, that's going to work very strongly against hotties in a close race, I think we're going to get you know a couple of voters that swing it by a couple of points in another direction. Harper's having a monster sees enjoy Votto of the Reds to make the playoffs. I guess he would get some votes. Everybody loves Votto. It won't be too graham anymore. Uh, doctors don't really have an M v P candidate, which is weird Return is not going to win M v p And I don't think maximum maximum. It would be. There's Yeah, but you know, like a look at his numbers. I mean, Harper's got this note. There's numbers Juan Soto, but last place team is unbelievable. Soto has been amazing. As a matter of fact, I've been looking at it. Soto is 25th on the player hater. Despite the disappointment early on, he's the number two hitter in points. So anything leaning sabermetric. He is a huge, huge the number one pick next year. I think he's number one points and Roto over to tease. Wrote. It would be close but points. Yeah, I want. I want so definitely soda because of the walks, But I think even a road I mean, who is safer for batting average and power and obviously, you know, he's healthy. He can run when he wants. People are going to go back and tell you that he disappointed in the early months, But if you look at the numbers at the end of the year, he's probably going to be a top 20 player player. And then when I did my research on the base runners, it's amazing. So so to lead the majors in base runners on base for him when he came to the plate, the last full season in 2019. Umbria was right behind him. And this season, you know, brands like Number two behind Devers. So does 30th. Josh Bell is tense. That's amazing to me like because photos on base all the time. So like in fantasy, like when we go in the next season, you should look at guys who are batting behind the Stars who's batting behind Soto and Harper. Brian Reynolds. Is like fifth and baseball and base runners who bets behind him Right now, it's Colin Moran. These guys have value because they're guys ahead of them are always on base, whereas the guys ahead of Harper on basis because it feels keep butchering their leadoff spot. It's just amazing to me like anyway. Let's move on. Anyone who has ever needed self storage knows what a hassle it can be. You have to rent or borrow a truck and then find someone to help you move your stuff and let's face it. Moving furniture and heavy items without damaging them isn't easy. Renting the unit is worse. The hidden fees and admin costs are scarier than the dingy facilities. You're leaving your stuff in. Why not use closet box? Instead, closet boxes, self storage without leaving home, They'll pick up your belongings, store them securely and bring any item back when.

Because he wasn't even drafted in ESPN leagues this year, or he was like a last round pick. That was the last round pick. That's the thing. He's a little in the National League, too. He's a little to the National League. What Cedric militants bed to the American League, where, even if he wasn't a drafted player in your league, he was picked up almost instantaneously after the season began, and you've reaped the benefits of it. You mentioned him on the show. I mentioned what I saw in him late in spring training. I trusted him in a couple of places, So I'm happy with the results have been getting usually in the national the NL only leagues. I understand pitch camping. What By the way is a guy got on base. I would have taken amount going to Diego's who saved it, but You mentioned since we're going into all the facts, he said, for the player to race, the points Leaderboard is not even a close race whatsoever. It's being dominated by showing Itani so I'm going to give you my really neat and Gigi stat on him. He has nine players who have more batting fantasy points this year. Do you know how many batters have more than Otani pitching point just his pitching points as a pitcher. Only 44 hitters have had more points than Otani has had as a pitcher. It's It's it's historic season. He's the VP of the American League. Vlad Guerrero. Guerrero has future MVP seasons in them. Yeah, it's amazing to me. But I'm Otani has to win. M v P. I understand. The Angels aren't making the playoffs. Blue Jays still can, but I mean, how could it not be? Otani National League? I mean, I think he's I think the teeth will be the MVP of the national, don't you? In real life. I think I think that the N L M v p could be a very close race. I actually do think that if the Padres don't make the playoffs, that's going to work very strongly against hotties in a close race, I think we're going to get you know a couple of voters that swing it by a couple of points in another direction. Harper's having a monster sees enjoy Votto of the Reds happen to make the playoffs. I guess he would get some votes. Everybody loves Votto. It won't be too graham anymore. Uh, doctors don't really have an NDP candidate, which is weird Return is not going to win M v p And I don't think maximum maximum. It would be. There's Yeah, but you know, like a look at his numbers. I mean, Harper's got this. Not There's numbers, Ron Soto. But last place team is unbelievable. Soto has been amazing. As a matter of fact, I've been looking at it. Soto is 25th on the player hater. Despite the disappointment early on, he's the number two hitter in points. So anything leaning sabermetric. He is a huge, huge number one pick next year. So soda led the majors in base runners on base for him when he came to the plate, the last full season in 2019. Is like fifth and baseball and base runners. So who pass behind him right now? It's Colin Moran. These guys have value because they're guys ahead of them are always on base, whereas the guys ahead of Harper are on basis because it feels keep butchering their leadoff spot. It's just amazing to me like anyway. Let's move on. Are you paying too much for term life insurance? There's a tremendous price war..

"Weather traffic You want Mike McConnell tomorrow morning at five on 700 wlw. No scores. The Royals come to that for the first time against Luis Castillo and Chris We have really seen a Luis Castillo resurgence here. Recently. First pitch is a taken strike to Whit Merrifield in the council and one It's been a huge turnaround for Luis. You know, he started the season by losing seven consecutive starts. Here's the old one and just off the outside corner Since that time, though, he's lowered his earned run average down to five and don't laugh at home because it takes a lot of good pitching to do that. Since that time has earned run average is 2.1 that is the fifth best in the National League 11 pitch in Merrifield swings and misses and it's ball and two strikes. And for Luis, the majority of the reason he is pitching better is because the location of his pitches Seems to be working down with the fastball a lot more now. Here's the pitch, and that's just off the outside corner. Good fastball, two balls and two strikes. Almost wonder if he's Growing harder because he is throwing harder. I mean, we saw him repeatedly, it stands out. Vividly in my mind from San Diego. There's a bouncing ball to third. Suarez will charge it field and throw on the run in time. Merrifield is retired one away. But That San Diego start that he made hitting triple digits with regularity. And, you know, we all know that he's capable of bumping 100. But He seemed to be doing that consistently already is well up. Into the upper nineties here. You know pictures like everybody else. You have days where you feel really good. You have other days where you feel? Not quite as good that obviously one of those great biorhythm days for Luis Castillo. Where boy? Was it ever coming out of his hand? Nice. Airfield takes a strike over the outside edge. The count is owned one On Andrew Benintendi birthday boy in Cincinnati native No one been in 10 D swings and misses. And now he's down to the count very quickly against Castillo, No balls and two strikes, Probably a national holiday up there at the Madeira in celebrating the Ben attendees the whole Load of them up there, probably tonight, You probably feel a little left out line drive right back into the glove of Casio. He makes the catch. Ben and attendees retired on a hard hit ball right back of the pitcher, two outs. Mean Castillo didn't catch it. It caught him. 10 and 10 D just hit that right back into the glove of Castillo sandlots style. Hold your glove there. I'll do the rest. Waist high catch On a rocket right back at Castillo. That's the ultimate look what I found. Or back to back. Great defensive plays by the Reds. You know what? You could look at it like that, too. I'm giving Suarez two stars on that little ground ball of the field. It made a nice play, starting a half the Castillo probably ready to give Castillo the gold glove the pitch loan outside Ball one. If if he was wearing the gold glove, that ball would have bounced over the roof of the stadium as hard as it was hit. If you win it last year you should wear this year. The one else, Miss by Perez one and one. You've clearly never won a gold glove have you know? Cause they're not actual like metal. They're not But not metal. Yeah. Well, I would be very disappointed them. Salvi drives one to deep center field going back on it. The center.

"Vladimir Gutierrez gets the ball for the Redlegs here tonight in Kansas City. With the Reds going in order in the top of the first inning. I'm sure Vladimir Gutierrez Chris is happy to face anybody other than the San Diego Padres. Well, you've seen enough of the Padres. I think they're an awfully tough challenge for anybody, especially a youngster making his way through the major league for the very first time. You know, the Reds have lost each of his last three starts, which is a big difference from what he did in his first four starts over three and one, and he's three and one with a 2.7 of those first four, so he's hoping to Recapture a little bit that magic right now he finds himself at two or rather three and three with the 493 as he goes to work here against Whit Merrifield. Fairfield hitting 2 84 8 homers 45 driven in the wind by Gutierrez the pitch to Merrifield and that's taken strike over the inside corner. The knees the count is nothing in one Gutierrez, of course, facing the Royals for the first time. And Even though the numbers are down for Kansas City, they got off to a blistering hot start and the pitch just a little high off the outside corner. Good fastball from Gutierrez even to the counted one ball and one strike. Back there the best record in the league at the end of April. They were in first place, but then fell off in a big way. They have had to very prolonged losing streaks. 11 pitch and a swing and a miss good slider, diving down and away from the right handed hitting mayor field. And it's a ball and two strikes. Part of the problem for this Royals team early on was their starting pitching. Wasn't going deep in the game, so their bullpen got overworked pitches, a breaking ball that just misses off the outside edge. Two and two. And When the bullpen got overtaxed. Some point. They basically overheated. And when the bullpen fell off, things started to go South pretty quickly for this Kansas City team. Here's the two to and there's a fastball well thrown right on the outside corner. Strike three called Mayor Fields down on strikes, and there's one away. It's a tough strikeout right there from mirror field. He is by far their best overall professional hitter.

"Our good friend Matt Sheppard, joining us on behalf of our crosstalk bet MGM find him on Twitter at Chef Matt if you don't follow him already do so immediately. Chef, my friend first and foremost Happy Father's Day yesterday to you. Hopefully you got some time over the weekend to spend with your family. A father of four if I'm not mistaken, so one I know that you're a great dad. I know how much your kids love you in there. How? How Chad used to talk about you and the light in his eyes, And I know that that's very important so Hopefully, you're able to spend some time with the with the kiddos and enjoy a little father's day for a very busy weekend in the world about Tigers baseball. Yeah, Thanks, baby. Appreciate it very much. I dig the chair suspense in there with my my entire family, which is worth it. It's the present that every father would want every single day. I'll take it on a father's day at a great time with my boys playing golf and my daughter. Made me some wonderful car with some pictures of her and I are throughout the years and, uh, really got me choked up. Hopefully you, uh, you and your dad had a great time together over the weekend as well. We did. We got out there with my sister. We played a little golf The three of us that we we hate with my with my mother afterwards, and it was it was good. Now, Life is a life is good. And it's those moments right there that you, you know, you kind of cherished and you hold with you because you can't Can't happen forever, So I think it's It's very, very important. And I'm glad that with such a busy schedule for the Tigers this week, you know for all the players and all the staff members who are fathers happy Father's Day to all of them, and hopefully they were able to see their family. Whether it's via Facetime or whatever the case may be, at least spend a couple of moments. Very successful. Weak, I think, at least early to start the week that three game sweep Against the Kansas City Royals Monday, Tuesday Wednesday. Things are really, really looking good and things are really coming together, and then we had all the excitement of being able to see my school and Manning and back to back outings. Shep, my friend. I was very excited. Let's start first with the Royals before I get all excited about Matt Manning here they came out swinging. They get a 10 3 victory on Monday. It just it felt like you know, maybe Kansas City. Maybe I was a little too high on the Royals coming into the season, but the Tiger's playing some very good, competitive baseball, you know, sure, they might have a little slide of a couple games here and there, but I feel like every night they compete, and I don't know who else to 0.2 outside of a J. Hinch for being able to push the right buttons and buttons at the right time to get this team performing at the level that they have been Yeah, he makes a huge difference. I mean, and just the way he's able to maneuver the one win in Kansas City where he had to use Basically, it's a bullpen day. Right? So you had to go through all that and I think he's been a huge difference maker for this team. Um, but you bring up Mayes and Scougall and Manning. And that's kind of what you're able to see. You saw Nice yesterday against the Angels tomorrow. You're going to see Scougall and then on Wednesday Against the Cardinals. In that brief two game series wrap up, you'll see Manning and this is the stuff that Tigers fans have been waiting for, and then it's an absolute blast. You beat Kansas City who I think it's still a good team. I never thought they were a division contender AP. I always thought it was Chicago and everybody else because of Chicago's death and their balance and they can beat you in so many different ways. And then quite honestly, I thought Minnesota so I've been wrong about them and then Cleveland, Kansas said I did like that Ben and Candy acquisition, but the Tigers missed him because he was On the I L. Santana's been better for them than I thought. 100. Dozer has been awful for them with Merrifield, even though he played well in the series against Detroit has not been the whit Merrifield we've seen in the last few seasons. They did get Alberto Mondesi back, and he homered immediately against Detroit, but overall they have not had the type of consistency. The Kansas City needed to stay at that high level when they got off to such a great started, actually, one point led the major leagues in record, but there's such a streaky team in Detroit got him at the right time, and it's Two times. We've gotten them at the right time because they swept them twice. So you look at a situation for the Tigers, where they swept Houston, Seattle, the Yankees and the Royals twice. It's hard to sweep teams. It really is. That's the Angels just yesterday. It's hard to sweep them. That started the road trip out on the right way. And then you run into an angels team that well, quite honestly in June there as good as offences there is in baseball. You know, Shep with the going back to this real quick just on the A L Central because everybody was high on the twins. I mean, that was I think that was, you know was white toxin twins are going to battle it out. Cleveland might get they might get a little strange in there and try to make some things up. But what in the world is wrong with Minnesota? Well, it's a really good question at the reason I was high There's a number of different factors. First of all, you know Byron Box It can be a difference maker Max Kepler can hit with power. I thought they'd have Josh Donaldson for the majority of the season. He missed quite a bit of time. Nelson Cruz, re upping with him Andrelton Simmons, and it's shortstop and moving political to second. I thought it would have been a really dynamic combination of the middle, and I thought they were lacking a little bit. Behind the plate, and maybe more specifically, their started pitching with something that was concerned, but they just have not done a whole lot. Well, um, look, Cruz continues to be who he is, at times. Miguel so no. Is a guy who can hurt you, but I think I think he's he's more of a negative than he is a positive. Um Donaldson, it's hard to keep him healthy and boxed in, does not have a long history of really good health playing every day. It's kind of like Judge in Stanton in New York. When they're healthy, It's unbelievable, but how much can you count on them? Right? And and that's that's been a big problem from Minnesota. And if they don't get it fixed, it could be a problem for a long time coming. They just have not. Able to put much together at all. And they had a really good run. Don't get me wrong. They've got some talent on paper. But you know, we're on paper, you know, And when you're relying on guys like Buxton And you're relying on guys like Donaldson and in order for you to have success. They've got to play at a high level, but play a lot. Those guys have too much of a history of being hurt, and that's part of the reason they have struggled so mightily, but a lot of it has it comes down to pitching. Maybe they just do not have the arms. They've lost..

Matt Sheppard Josh Donaldson Alberto Mondesi Matt Manning Andrelton Simmons Max Kepler Mayes June Scougall Yankees Detroit Monday Nelson Cruz Ben tomorrow Seattle Chad Donaldson Houston New York

Anthony Rizzo did the A's got a nice five to win over the lousy defects, but I don't think Madison Bumgarner saw this coming when he signed over there, or if he did, I would imagine had a piece in the Chronicle said. If the Diamondbacks poison just dump everything to the trade deadline, balmy would be a trade candidate. And now he's hurt so he wouldn't do what what is this injury by the way? I'll get back an arm or is like a bleaker he had got check. Let me check up on that because he never had an arm injury.
