"WGN America lives have been altered we're all adapting to significant changes but we're Chicago and and we will get through it together just remember it's only temporary and WGN radio here to get you through it as the song says WGN radio with you twenty four hours on air online and Chicago I say okay is it cynical chillier here on seven twenty WGN and we're live in the skyline studio here until four AM phone number for talking Texas three one two nine eight one seven two hundred three one two nine eight one seven two hundred and I guess right now is Joe Fassler who is a writer and he added to the book of light the dark writers on creativity inspiration in the artistic process and he's got a a novel coming out too and he wrote a piece about a quarantine could fix our broken brains in that boredom could be good Joe welcome back Hey yeah thanks thanks okay so how how do you personally experienced board well it's funny I mean right part of the reason I wrote the piece is because I'm I'm stuck at home you know like like most of the people in in the US right now and I'm actually not ordinance is a little bit hard to come by my three year old son is is home with us his the schools have been shut down in Denver where I live and I my wife and I are both you know trying to to work and you know I'm trying to finish this book while also caring for for him full time so it's it's pretty common experience right now and it's it's pretty intense obviously you know people are dying there's been many many great situations unfolding right now but I think one very sort of common experiences that people are are are are stuck at home often with children and and often you know quite stressed out about the the new the new and very sudden changes to their lives one thing that that I had kind of notice was that instead of being with my son not fully being in the moments you know when it when it was my part of the day to watch him I I would often be you know kind of looking at my phone trying to check emails sort of do everything at once is at as this kind of response to my own professional stress of the situation and are and and part of the reason I wrote the I I wrote the the piece was to to remind myself that that there's more there's more to life than being endlessly productive and to try to find it to be sort of trying moments of stillness you know when I when I'm with my son that that I can let my you know in with a three year old is incredibly fun and engaging sometimes and it can be you know quite Menon that set at other times and and I'm trying to be okay with letting my mind wander and letting my my shot sort of go where they will without necessarily reaching for my phone or trying to distract myself which is a very different experience than than than just kind of letting your stop self generate and one of the things that was fine about the piece was was learning about the scientific basis of why making space to do that can be so valuable what what tell me a little bit about that the scientific aspect of it sure so typically researchers have studied mine wondering which is itself a certain creasing Lee hot topic within you know cognitive science and what they found is that we spend a lot of time engaged in what they called task unrelated thoughts which is which is you know often what happens when we're bored but when our mind starts to kind of wonder from what we're doing so you know if it's if it's a really intense moments of of of crisis or something R. J. R. brains are gonna be occupied with the immediate moment at hand but when you're on a kind of lower level of engagement whether you're doing something monotonous you know washing the dishes or you know doing a sort of routine chore the mind can start to to the wonder and self generate and and actually what what's interesting about it is is we have a we spent much of our time in gauged in this kind of spot one one study think about two thousand such stock today each other duration of about five seconds which ends up being like kind of hours a day over the course of a lifetime again one study you know thinks it's fifty million task unrelated thoughts which I kind of did some back of the envelope mass and if you were to sort of transcribe all that again this is sort of unscientific imprecise but just to kind of get out the at the at the volume of data that you would be like tens of thousands of pages of of of stocks and you know the research shows that a lot of these stocks are not necessarily valuable in any sort of objective way S. as in the not like they're all Eureka moments though most people describe these thoughts often is as pleasant or or useful of course you know we can obsess and worry over things and are and the way our minds wander can sometimes be a source of stress really fixated on a problem but a lot of people sort of self report their self generated thought as as as pleasant and and and useful and interesting even if it tends to fixate on relationships or memories are things that are more subjective but with this actually really seems to be and that sort of evolutionary basis of this kind of thing is is really a problem solving mechanism many self generated content to focus on the on the kind of upcoming twenty four hour period yeah and it's it's really cool because you know I can be watching me watching my son or washing dishes at the same time as my mind is wandering I'm thinking about it you know a call that I have for work for an interview that I might do or or just even kind of common approach dinner and what I meant when I cook that night and what ingredients and can be used in and the idea is wow look we can sort of start planning and we can see if we can actually be making a lot of progress in terms of solving the immediate challenges that we face while we were engaged in other activities and scientists increasingly believe that this is this amazing gift that we have this this huge volume of self generated shot that allows us to solve other problems while we're doing other things and for it to go another like player with that Sir Gerry create highly creative people you know whether they're artists or you know innovators in some other ways this sort of thought teams seems to play a crucial role in terms of their own creative problem solving whether it's on it you know a work of art or you know in innovative disruptive business model or something so I said the science shows that that those kinds of stocks are not actually that differ from like the grocery list that you might building your mind to it they're actually more alike than we might check till fasteners with us he is the editor of like the dark and now we're talking about how quarantine could fix our broken brains and boredom maybe not such a bad thing Joe I happen to be one of those people whose mind races all the time I'm I'm I'm one of those people takes me about ninety minutes on average to fall asleep when I go to bed because my my mind is always thinking about things like that and you know and I'm I I'm I'm very rarely bored because of the past but sometimes that's really that's sometimes really aggravating especially when I wanna get some sleep it can be absolutely can be and and and certainly you know in the studies they've done of of of mind wandering or self generated thought people do report you know that their thoughts are are stressful and that's that's part of what's going on to right now I I talked to a man named Johnny small which was a a really influential sort of mind wandering researcher and he either way he described it is is that you know mind wandering is is when your brain tries to solve problems and right now we're all facing a problem that can't necessarily be solved is this pandemic you know I mean if it's going to be solved that researchers were working on the vaccines and there are things we can do as a society but on an individual basis yeah you know we need to we need to basically stay home and deal with ourselves and so we can't you know we can try to apply our thinking and our sort of anxious dot stream to this problem but we're actually not going to get anywhere except for you know stressing ourselves out so one of the ways that I'm that I'm sort of you know talking about boredom in the peace and and in my own thinking is is to is to try to disengage from that a little bit you know try to let myself off the hook as it were and and know that my mind's gonna race I'm gonna wanna be checking the news all the time looking at the progress looking at the infection rate you know kicking about the future do we have enough food you know that kind of thing but but but actually you know it my mind wants to solve that problem that it can't solve right now and part of the value of of boredom if we can if we can something we might try to cultivate is to back away from that a little bit and find time for the mind if possible you know to focus on other problems that might have whether they're created for inter personal or professional yeah fascinating stuff by the way we got it we'll text here Joan if if anybody wants to.

Because I think they stirred up not following the bible. They live on Lebanon guests they live on. They don't live on other chapters at the bible right now. We don't need any racist. And we've got a governor Rick in Omaha Nebraska. That's having a religious Christian day and. Having all religions, you know, what I mean, a religion or religion. And that's why I'm calling. I it really bothers me to see our leaders, promote racism. Yeah. I agree. Tony. Thank you for the call spot on very well said Bob ney is on the line with us. The author side swipe former congressman from Ohio he is with talk media news. And this report brought to you by goods for the old goat dot com and loving what you do Ellen Ratner his new book. Bob, welcome back to the program. Well, thank you, Tom. So what's happening in the world today? Well today, of course, celebration of the lights birthday of Martin Luther King and people have not been to the King Center site. They really ought to there. Oh, really, what are they what did they miss? I mean had they showed up. He said his is entire prepared remarks were great day. Beautiful day, isn't it? Thanks so much for being here. Nice to see it by well. And that's a shame. And then my cats apparently compared him to Martin Luther King. Yes. I saw that in the wall. I didn't carry that. Because I don't think it's a story. I even wanted to carry, but I, but I did see it. But yeah, it's a celebration. If you go online to the King Center, also you'll see some really wonderful things to read about his life, by the way, speaking of walls, 'cause we can't go a day without a wall. But.

"wgn america" Discussed on KOA 850 AM

"Going to be a new WGN America series and produced by Dorsey, by the way, Chris Dorsey here in Denver, Colorado. Interesting connection there as well. Let's bring him on dog the bounty hunter joins us. Rick Lewis, Dave Logan, Kathy Lee dog. How you doing? Aloha good. Aloha. Hello, everybody. Capi rick. What's up? What's up, Doug? Hi, high view bad. How're you doing good? It's bear. That's the worst. Is that why you guys went back to Hawaii? I left last night. I'm like, I cannot take this. You know? Go to sleep and leave a window open, and you could die. You're not supposed to be there. Is that what the bible? Sure. That's that record. They loved the people's great, you know, but spring and summer eat off at the winner. Yeah. Yeah. You know, once you get used to perfect weather in Hawaii never gets too hot to cold, and it's pretty hard to to to live with anything else. Well, congratulations on the new show, man. That's big news. Oh, thank you, brother. A man. There is a God. Yeah, man. And this sounds really interesting. It's called dogs. Most wanted to you're going to track down. It sounds like the most wanted. Fugitives are criminals in the country. Is that right? Well, yes, I, you know for doing this so long I get a lottery quest. Dear God for people that you know, from incest to child break in the camp by the guy and dog, please help, and you know, like, we're putting a D in the sky where are you? I mean, you would not believe it. Right. So the most wanted is not only FBI and top ten because you got to most of top wanted FBI in the world are terrorists. You can't. You know? I can't of course, ever do that. But federal marshalls have Colorado. You're not gonna believe this as a predatory list. I think I could say it's more than fifty that have committed sexual deviant acts with children that are on the run from the law. Yeah, that's one a dogs. Most wanted right? And you know, the motivation right now going through this cancer fight with back. I've got to do something, you know. Whether there's a God, I I think so and I hope so, but I know there is also a chance of being a karma and had some breaks. But I've come out of those breaks on top of the world. And I believe that it's because I've captured the Meena son of a bitches sorry guys in the world in either fixed them or God them off the streets. Where people have been save lives and protect it. So because of that karma, I have been blessed. So right now, you know, I need the blessing. So bay you with this is unbelievable. What you go through thinking that she might pass away. And you know, there's so many people with dogs this that this will work this work. Where'd you hear about that on the internet? I'm like, all right. So I guess that's like the bible. No. But it's true. So I mean, it's just incredible. So there's things happening that are got to be able to work and go after these really. Guys that are like that that make me feel better and worthy enough to go to God and say, please don't let my die. I told her the other day. Are you ain't Diane? I'm gonna keep you live. I kept your small rotten gold. Golddigger your whole life. She said, I didn't even know the met you. May have just lost his dog gone. Gog man. He was. Let's get them. Right back on it. We'll get him back on. I wanna I wanna ask him. So how selective can he be? I mean who gets to determine here's the list who gets to determine who who dog and Beth actually go after the I think we've we got him back dog. Do we have you back? Yes. Oh, God is shut me up on. That might have been the big. Oh, she's not here. I couldn't be talking too freely. Hey, hey, let me ask you a question. And I just talked to Rick and Kathy about this. When you when you get cut off. So you get the list in terms of the TV show. How how does the process work in terms of you or somebody close to you deciding who actually you're going to go after because I'm sure you could. I mean, there's plenty of people you could choose from. I know, but we there. That's why it's called dogs most wanted because I am the boss not her. So I am I'm the one that with her, you know, approval. Yeah. Doc supervision, Kathy. Belt when it really gets to me. You know, I like younger of you know, Jamie, John, we talked about it the girl that told on Tiger Woods. Yeah. You know that was worth. I mean, she's in some big magazine. Beautiful girl Vanity Fair. Yeah. And the hear the story from her parents. He was raised good and Oklahoma Kansas came to Vegas this. And that everybody thought because she spent some days, I guess what Tiger Woods that. She was. That's what she's score used or like that then drugs came I knew that someone had to go get her. That was the dog must want it. Because listen. You know? And I hope I saved her life. She's in rehab. So I'm the one that's gonna say you won't believe that what I'm working on. Now. I can't say nothing in. Why in unbelievable right? Unbelievable. So things like that. That you go stop everything right now catch this guy. Hey. You're producing this with Chris Dorsey from Dorsey pictures right here in Denver. And interestingly enough we met with him when you were shopping my TV pilot around two three years ago. And I love that guy, man. He's a good, dude. And they do a lot of shows a lot of reality shows. And I think he's going to be a good guy for you to work with. Oh, yeah. He is super. And you know, he's local boy Colorado's yell like in LA and New York are all as, you know, all your producer for CBS NBC all the cable networks about right? I don't there's not one in like, not a normal state. So he's relocating council rock he done. He's done. So many shows about hunting in Africa that you know, animals that were after like eating people and stuff and hunting describing to him. What that means? The first producer ever met. That's like you're preaching to the choir. Yeah. That's that is an interesting connection. He's and he's done a ton of shows. I don't know what his list is right now of shows that are on the air. But there's a lot of them. You're in good hands with him. And we were so excited to hear this news today for you and Beth, and I hope she's doing good, please send her our love. And let's talk to you again. Once you get this cranked up. All right, brother. Thank you guys. Everybody be saved up. Bless hope. He gets warmer today. It's in the forties. Warmer today is Sonny Sonny Doug. Doc you love. I will. Thank you. She's like, you know, she's a little better. You know, you do this. This is a real day by day thing. You know? This is a real day by day thing. Like you saying you gotta get your the all the good vibes. Go on you know, what I mean? And we're sending lots. Good. Yeah. Good. Right here. Thank you dog. Thank you, guys, brother. All right. That's dog. The bounty hunter dogs most wanted and you could see he's real. He's very excited isn't he as he should. Yeah. This is a big deal.
