UNC’s Aaron Sabato drafted by Minnesota Twins in first round of MLB Draft

"Site well you know last Sunday on the show I spoke with the Ted Sabado attended played for me back back in the day at mercy college we're talking about his son Erin the all American first baseman from you and see who last week was being touted as a first round draft choice and sure enough this past Wednesday evening that happened Erin was selected by the Minnesota Twins in the first round the twenty seventh pick overall and and while Erin are are you there yes I'm here good well first of all congratulations that this is one heck of an achievement achievement what it quite an accomplishment I'd known talking to your dad he's over the moon I'm sure you're the same way yeah it's still surreal and thank you so much I really appreciate it let's talk because it's been unusual year for you Erin you know that this is what was with the the the the college season being stopped prematurely the draft being only five rounds what goes through the days leading up to the draft I mean where the scouts from the various big league teams well they are really talking directly to usually talking to your family legal advisor Bobby Ballard we don't walk us through what happened over the last you know a few days before the you got picked yeah James would go through Bobby and we would just set up zoom links I mean we couldn't have people come to the house or they they can scout anyway so they need to check the system down and talk with me and it was over soon kind of like what we did for college classes and it would they would just be a little questions about who I was the person as a hater my character at what what am I doing on my off time but that was the only way that we could really connectors with all the the code stuff we we are talking with the the general managers or the regular player operations will who were what level of the organization we talking with former director and on the team but there is that bit about the top level got to got to bail decisions and I'm I'm curious how many teams were talking to you a bunch of whether there is I did about probably ten to fifteen meeting well the contact with doubts from almost every team she's unbelievable and and friends if you haven't seen Erin play you know check it out go online and just see some of the the the video clips and he just he just punishes a baseball no I don't like the way instead hit baseball is back in the day in college but Erin and Ted was a great great hitter al tell yeah that's that's the god's honest truth but I know you're a little bigger than your father and you hit the ball even further and he did you know so let's talk about I assume you've been what happens now mean back in the day when the most draft kids the draft takes place traditionally the scout comes to you and and there's a signing almost immediately that they don't fool around with this they want this done and then they just simply send you off their dispatch to be usually the team's spring training facility where they they work out and get you you know all certain that they figure out what my early teen you're going to play out but this is not this year this is different so what what is happening I mean you're still home right you're still home in Westchester county yeah the home I think I was talking with with my agent yesterday and some of the guys from the from the twins organization they just sat there like they just don't know like where anybody's gonna go right now that's a probably a couple of more weeks I'll be home but then they're hoping to get people them you know their spring training and and Florida but we it's more of just a a day by day thing kind of waiting to hear just playing it by ear and and just opened open do you know that something happens pretty

"What I share something I thought that was pretty poignant that odd James Paxton had to say for the Yankees and he's also a part of the like player Executive Council that'll be Players Association that's been involved in a lot of these negotiations but here's where to say about the recent events he said my white privilege has allowed me to be oblivious to the true magnitude of oppression the black community faces by silence at this point is also a product of my white privilege and beginning to realize my privilege and ignorance time to listen learn and to take action at least that's just one example yeah we talked to Antrel Rolle talk to David Hackett and we're talking about how it's amazing to see athletes you know speaking out and sharing their their thoughts and of course I always think that's welcome but when you're seeing these kinds of like that to me seems like a very heartfelt message from James Paxton I mean that seems like someone who put a lot of thought into it of someone who is trying to listen and for him to put that out and and David Hackett said you know JJ watt and it's at the end for the white players like we saw this with Chris long and and some others who were very supportive of the players protesting what Colin Kaepernick was doing it and now even more so and that is been something that has really changed this for athletes you know where now you're seeing where it's not just the African American athletes who are the ones who will feel like they are in this and and trying to get the message across to get the point across about how wrong they felt for so long by law enforcement but also to have now the white athletes come along with it it is it that that is powerful we've been talking this morning a lot about statements and statements coming from teams and leagues and and how they land and and the impact that they have you know that from James Paxton to beat that that hits you know I think that you know the more that we see you athletes taking those kinds of positions but not for the sake of it you know not just to I feel like you get you know you put something out there okay I put something out there like really internalizing this it and feel like they want to make a meaningful change at apology inspects it for that

Hurricane Season Collides With Coronavirus, As Communities Plan For Dual Emergencies

"Hurricane Orlando. season starts today June first. You are allowed to take a moment after hearing that. I depend then waves of protests now. Hurricane season forecasters expect above average activity in part because climate change is making the Atlantic Ocean warmer. Amy Green of Wfan. Orlando has been asking. How do you plan for hurricanes during a pandemic Robin? Roku Bauer doesn't like to chance it when there's a hurricane. She almost always. Always evacuates roku bow our lives in Cocoa Beach Florida on a barrier island between the Atlantic Ocean and Indian River Lagoon. Her mother is ninety three. She's gotTa have flushing toilets. She's gotTa have fresh water. She's just got some physical needs that require that, but this year Roco Bauer is thinking hard about her hurricane plan. She sixty five like her mother considered at higher risk to the corona virus. Virus if I have to go any further, or if I have to go somewhere, then you're going to be exposed to more people in different environments, and you don't know where those people have been he in Florida, a record, six and a half. Million people evacuated for Hurricane Irma in two thousand seventeen this year. That will be a harder decision. Craig fugate used to head the federal emergency management. Management Agency and it's Florida counterpart. He fears some people won't evacuate because they'll fear exposing themselves to the virus that may result and more people saying behind in increasing the risk of loss of life, but there's another risk sheltering evacuees together in school, gymnasiums and other enclosed spaces as Florida. Governor Rhonda Santa's points out pile people into a place under normal circumstances. That may be fine, but that would. Allow the virus to really spread if somebody is in fact infected. That's why his administration is considering. Stay at home. Orders in were houses are newer and Sturdier or sheltering evacuees and hotels and motels. The economic collapse has left vacant. Most at risk are nursing home patients. Many low-lying facilities have evacuation agreements with facilities on higher ground, but kristen nap of the Florida healthcare. Association says this year. Nursing homes will have to reexamine these. These arrangements if you are a facility that event, an evacuation zone and you have positive cases in your building, you may not be able to go to the typical facility that you would evacuate to if they don't have positive cases in their building, Florida leaders also are socking away protective ear, four shelter and utility workers, and they're making sure stores have plenty of food and water, so people can stock up before a storm. Storm in central Florida before Irma hit utility crews converged from across the country to help restore electricity this year. Linda, Veroni of the Orlando Utilities Commission anticipates longer outages than usual. That's because cove in nineteen makes it harder to house and feed these workers while preventing the viruses spread, it will take longer to check them all in. It will take a little longer to get the mall to the point that they can be out. Out in the field working, robin broke our of Coco Beach considered not evacuating, but feels she would have to because of her mother already. She's checking with hotel, so she can be ready for a hurricane. I hope we don't have any I. Mean we've been through a lot this year. Meteorologists are predicting up to ten hurricanes and up to six major ones between now and December

"Do this game. I recalled back in the day when Mike and the mad dog would do a game and I thought well okay It'll be interesting. They were great. I mean you know I'm listening to it and putting out of my head. But it's a morning show and it's two guys who aren't hockey broadcasters and just putting that out of aside athlete they were terrific. I was waiting hockey fans than you had lost your mind. Tom Broadcast Donors Richard and he continued with the hyper. And I thought you did a great job with play by play in boomer with great insights You know as to the lack of defense on the devils part so You know. Obviously they're doing a morning show so they're not going to be up every night. Doing Hockey Games but Geez THEY COULD. You know comparing them to some of the hockey play by plays. I've heard across the country. I mean they could. They could clearly get a job doing that if they wanted to. Someday Kinda doubt boomers going to be doing that. Have a one of these days fifty years from now who knows three one. Eighty six right dreamers fatally come true key west. Have a hockey team. Maybe an extra ten MIL. They're paying these announcers these days asphalt Scott Avenue. Right what's happening? Hey guys nice job last night really another good one So some of the points you were making yesterday about the nets and Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving and how this crappy that these guys got Kenny Atkinson fired and and they found their new voice. I don't know if you guys heard the soundbite of the new coach last night. Basically just tongue baiting Kevin durant play giving them all the credit in the world and being there and being voice on the bench and it was like. Does this guy need this? He needs a coach to give him praise when he doesn't even play to survive his ego. Y Big Jock bond. Trying to keep job. It'd be the named the coaches like bickerstaff was named the head coach. Out and Columbia deal. Yes so bickerstaff takes over for beeline interim basis and next thing you know. They're playing pretty well. They go five and five over the next ten and let's give him the year contract. No Problem Baby Jacques. Von Will Get. I did see the durant cut in our system so we can play that moving forward. Yes tongue bad. Time Rangers one in Dallas. Forty two time meek number forty would be we really need a Webcam or something on Paul Turner when he has to do this stuff. I need to see his initial smile or good. Lord I would is lost in Vancouver a shootout five to four quickly on Spring Baseball. The scores don't matter Garrett Cole. Six ks over three and two thirds one run allowed Jordan Montgomery. Four perfect innings. Gary Sanchez has the regular flu. Apparently no corona virus even though he wasn't tested for ignificant but either way I guess I I can't the Yankees at don't even get me started. met frustrated by it every day. It's something he's got a sore back he's got the Flu Stanton's got this job back was Bullcrap because they were afraid to tell people out of fever. Maybe I don't know that's what I think. He had the fever and they were hoping it would die down and then when it didn't they had to come out. I think that if they came out and said he had a fever that someone might came and stick them in a plastic vacuum sealed bag. I hope so because we get over it now. Hopefully there's no back injury. He's not a back injury and then they find out he's got the flu then they tell us that he's got the flu so people don't pass. I'm the up for that so I think I'm sure he'll be fine. He's a young kid. He's in good shape the Yankees. Are we ready to week? You heard your doubt Dukes. He gets upset at this stuff. Man He out. I what I'm stunned. He's really pooh-poohing. This missed I on the on the warm up. Show five forty five to six. I play my jerry role. What does this guy? All he does is wipe stuff down with 'cause he doesn't leave his house ever and now. The Corona Virus Boop people are making a big deal over nothing. He's going to. He'll turn on US here. I'm surprised yeah I'm just looking at the numbers doesn't look that bad. Hey by the way we met. Your sister is my sister. Debbie anything like you have said that. Yeah of course not I mean I mean like when I see her I see us like wow. It's got to be adopted. Well Yeah Yeah we do not look that much at all. You were stunned to learn. This was his sister. I met her before but I she goes to a lot of devils games. I like that. Yeah he's a huge hockey. That's her husband. Her husband. Paul yes Paul. Also I didn't. I didn't know some people. Have you know they're not married? Like our fifty at curious to see if there was a marriage and the family was like a out knowing one dukes epidemic of no marriage. That's what I wanted to know. I've got a robot here. That looks exactly like your sister. All right younger sister older. I'm assuming that's my older sister older older than you and I have a younger sister as well younger than you. The middle child middle. I should've realized that Michael Conforto Oblique strain opening day. Questionably strain YEP. What's next thing for Stanton? I apparently g you got the oblique in the pool. I got the growing up. I got the BICEP. Anybody wants it on at the free injury of the calf you. WanNa trade now. I'm good with where I'm at. What do you got a quad? Bobby's got the gluten. Jerry got HAM SPEC hamstring hamstring. Twenty peace right. F- twenty piece. I can't wait someone's come money. Somebody's getting that money. All right. Thanks Mike here comes the finish line some things you leave the chance. Your teeth aren't one of them. That's why Chris Proactive. Defence shields against issues to future. "Richard Near and I said Harris from New Brunswick that is the kid who brought the Jerry head to the game and it was indeed him as he said. I'm a rutgers student and they were talking about a bunch of other stuff but I said how about this guy and I think that he was just. Harris was the son of somebody. I don't even know who listen to the station. By the way did Harris say that he was the guy that carry say? I'm Jerry head guy but he did mention that he was rutgers students. I think that we just introduced. Wfan to this guy and now he loves it. He loves it so much. He's calling Richard. Near ten o'clock on Tuesday night. He didn't know the fan until the Jerry. Younger kids your head case they They don't They don't listen to the radio. Much heads up my ass today. He probably knew about it but I mean I feel like because we brought him into the family here now. He's like addicted. Yeah because WHO's calling. Richard Neal was going to say who's in their twenties at ten o'clock on a Tuesday night. You know spring break's schools are classes. Are you know postponed now for Awhile Online class? He's got extra time on his hands right. Yeah I mean I feel like every guy calls a radio station after. Like seven o'clock is all seen Mickey Mantle. Play in person the minority. I see I wasn't allowed to TV in my room. So I listen to the fan every night going to bed so I called. Summers back in the day late at night. So in Roberts Evan Roberts when he was doing oh yeah conversations about the Yankees. Mainly I called summers about when Mike Richter retired it was very emotional for me because he was my guy. Yeah and I called Evan. Early in Eli Manning's career pre super bowl. Forty two okay. He was struggling. And you know on Thursdays. Yeah job here right before you ask your working right with us. You go full circle. I used to record my phone calls. I would call. Wfan used to sit there and cold. Mike and Chris and I'm a loser recorded that phone call. He played for people like alcohol. Celebrity you call a loser. I used to call horse. Yeah cool I had no idea all of this? Did you ever call the fan? No whatever call radio station. I tried calling Howard Stern a few times but after it was busy after two tries. I was like a about you. Did you ever call in to a radio station? Radio Station yes not the fan. But he's been working since I wonder if he's ever called the radio station. I don't actually call them to show that I'll work on the booker show just for the fan or is it set up. No no no out of time. I had no idea. Yeah no it was I had a what I thought was a funny comment on and I've they laughed. Just deliver the line click. Then I'll hang up and listen. You have no recollection of that do you. I I do not. I cannot repeat what I say because by today's standards not permanent. Yeah I I remember. Having tapes of Mean Summers me and Mike and the mad dog and me and Steve Cohen. Who was hosting an NFL draft? Show loser calling into scream about wasn't screaming about anything I was I was like eighteen. Nineteen years old. Whatever it was. Yeah I was a big sports fan. I loved radio and I thought it was really cool. You're a loser. I thought it was most of us that God jobs here. As interns let it was the greatest thing in the world right. Oh my gosh it was it I mean how do you? How do you think that appear to be here? A little different on the inside on the outside. But Yeah so you're saying it's working for a living up to be now. I wouldn't say that okay aspects of the business as with any business that are negative and you jaded over time. That's the way it works is true. I mean I remember walking in for my internship interview in a story. Ah It was like climbing inside of a dumpster lived down a life changing experience finding out where the studio was buried in the catacombs of you know and then going back to studio C to sit down with that. He's Kazarian pulling up a chair that had a stain on it in the shape of Argentina. And then you saying if you would like to work here you have to accept the fact that you'll be driving a Honda civic like me for the rest of your life. He was wrong. That's what that's what you said. I sent him. I was wrong on the on the nose. Strong like blown smoking. I was straight with them all about and then there was when I was picking the flies out of the coffee. That story also odd God yes. Men was like a regular occurrence flies in coffee about Eddie's office and the old building. Oh yeah all right above the this the The catch basin into some rain as man. Let's go to Steve in Manhattan Steve. What's happening? Hey Good morning guys how are you man? What's going on today? I just realized I've been married. Geo You used to record your call. Oh Yeah I did. I mean it was. I was a young kid. Man I li- absolutely I absolutely loved it. It was the coolest thing ever and I would play. Not only would I record them. I play them for people. I'd say. How cool is this that I was on? Wfan that's what I would do. But you'll remember I talked about it. I can't imagine a few years if I tell my kids. Hey girls you know. "Play WFAN welcome back to the program Laurie Rubin sitting here with you and I've been mentioning through the evening that as tragic as this is the Kobe Bryant story losing those nine people on that helicopter it is a national story in many ways of course it is a global story in many ways but for the people of Los Angeles it is also a loss for their community and I want to have that Los Angeles perspective this evening so we bring in Eric Pincus he covers the Lakers for bleacher report Eric thanks for joining me happy to do it in difficult times as soon start with what were your first thoughts when you heard the news that Kobe Bryant was killed well I mean my first thoughts were that it's just not true it's obviously you know Mr part because that's not that's not possible right because you go into the Nile which is a natural human emotion but unfortunately you know was on TMZ was the first place I saw it and what do you like their brand or not they tend to be accurate about these sort of things and so I I wasn't hopeful reach out and and it very quickly became pretty clear that this was a real thing and and and from there was really shocked I I've covered Kobe for almost two decades that's a long time a long time to know somebody and it wasn't like we hung out in one out for whatever drinks after game but we work professionally closer together be the practices I would go out would you would have a camp over the summer how to visit the camp he would have a should I make you event unveiling issue I go to that sort of thing he had his news film that he'd made a basically an autobiography I was at the premiere one about a screening rather that he put on got to talk to in there so you get to know these people you know the athletes that I cover but that period of time is so long that you bond and part of my job is to kind of have a distance and not be emotional but today was a very emotional day it really was it was very hard it was hard to tell my wife and my kids and I have three daughters Kobe has and stay in the present tense collapsed on the dial I have four daughters and you know we we we went through that grieving process and I've done a lot of talking about it to help you know it helped I think you know doing a little bit of radio and TV and stuff in it helps a little bit but it's it's a painful day here in Los Angeles yeah I I want to help with that for those of us sitting here in New York City and I think Colby was Kobe was the guy for today's current crop of of NBA players and for a lot of people of a certain age Kobe was their guy but for people who live in Los Angeles what in Kobe Bryant means to the city of Los Angeles we came in as a a boy really right he was seventeen when a while working in mountain drafting him in eighteen by the time you play it Jerry Jerry west said he couldn't even drive didn't the Lakers he was a young young pups so to speak in and he came in and I remember initially he would dribble the ball off his leg you would have these great moves we would know how to finish them you know he early on in his career he had air balls and in a key playoff moment and he kept going back to him he kept their borrowing and and that became like a defining moment for him at that failure help center of greater success than any you know you're out there where they want championships during a row Shaq and Kobe with that splintered and they were some level of animosity between Kobe and Shaq some of based on what we wanting to become the the player that he wanted to be an felt stifled by a player who is unstoppable away in shacks but also someone who didn't work as hard as Kobe didn't stay in shape like Kobe didn't didn't study the game why Kobe in Kobe's point of view was a shack work as hard as I work that he would be the most unstoppable player in history but he's not and there was some static any left in people blamed Kobe in some people took Jack's side mad and obviously Kobe has some off the course stuff that was very difficult to deal with and still is difficult to reconcile in some ways any ended up winning again with alcohol and borrowed and and any towards Achilles I was there for that and we have the heartbreak of that where father time is undefeated so he can you see the great all eventually fade away when it comes to athleticism but we want them to fade away no we want them to and we get old we want to see this call we end up you know going gray or does the heavy you nothing and I want to see him at the you know can you still shoot you you see every so often a clip of Jerry west doing like a little some video out there if you look for when he's talking to some students and kids and he's just casually shooting and hitting every single sake take like I want to see that with code but you know it is a long answer but you know from her LA it means a lot but I think we transition to with that and I think a lot of people relate to that as well he's always been a father but I mean at least since you know we had all these beautiful young daughters he missed some of the time that they were going up because being on the road so he put everything into coaching his daughter unfortunately she's gone too and I really to that because I because my daughter said almost the same age daughters that one's a year older one two year younger I have an older daughter nice looking place but if I I relate him because we do the same thing you know we both coach our kids team we both go to tournaments we will talk passcode both watch best welcome he's obviously bring a little more to the table and I am which is fine but there's a lot and I think you know that that's more my personal take but I think everybody has that I have a little more because I knew him personally but I think everybody feels in this community feels like they knew and personal even if they never even met him I mean this is like a family member Eric Pincus from bleacher report covers the Lakers covered Kobe Bryant for almost two decades and Eric you mentioned covering him at things like you know his camps and and other things like that the film premiere is there a Kobe story that at least in those of us who certainly follow the NBA but maybe not on the day to day basis around the team the way you were is their Kobe store you can share that gives us a different you know or a broader look at him well you know maybe about how we felt about the Lakers organization about the camp or any of that or is family I well I mean he always I did little this little things like even a locker room after the game there's a little area where they were almost always be someone waiting Timmy Kobe usually someone from like make a wish or somebody who was either can't or even a an adult to have something personal going on you know be a disability or some sort of terminal actuation Kobe did that more than anybody I still see it I see players do all the time but Kobe and I he did it more than any he loves teaching and was really good with kids I think in a lot of ways you can see because kids are kids are true colors you know like they can see through when someone full of it when they're not genuine and and a lot of players are very dedicated to their camp but a lot of players sometimes they just have camps where they're just there for the first day for the intro they say I can and they're not a part of it but I wasn't Kobe and I remember one alright I tweet about this earlier today and at a camp in Santa Barbara this is when I had two daughters and he said that if I wanted to try for we're talking about how I was going to have we're gonna try first a boy this time and he said well he said which the key to it is is is to wear socks when we're trying to make maybe and I thought or I did we didn't try my wife and I we have a third girl and and we we adore her one one boy anyway you know we did not look back and obviously Kobe either didn't but for or the punches you know I I have no idea I've never research the science on such a thing like is it warm pending that do it's Adam I don't think so but Hey there's there's too many moments as far as you know on the court that we all share by me but he was he was cool like he would take the time to talk you would be upset after a lot Sir I remember you know simple things like sometimes he would settle for jumpers and when Dr I remember like early on like you're asking in like did you where there's no driving lanes are just not take them and you said no you're right there were right I should have driven why should they should not settle for the jump up okay the I can be offensive and try to explain why your perfect you know most players including future science technol I messed up he's an interesting guy definitely so what what about his relationship with the Lakers organization with whether it's Dr Jerry Buss with Jeannie Buss what was that like one of the early stories that I that I actually broke that very few maybe really remember the details of but there was a point where we was very frustrated with the front office because they'd won with Shaq in infantry Jack and then the team was bad and it was taking awhile and Kobe was never known for being a patient human being and so he was basically demanding in so many ways that the Lakers traded Andrew Bynum produced a kid in a there was a moment where he he was very approachable guy in the community in Orange County so he some guys just a person that was in the earlier days before the modern internet where everybody had phone cameras which is like if you're young you would say what what's the camera that's not a phone that's that that figure it but they had a video camera navy of Kobe saying you know doctor buses that done I was very controversial at the time and I went down and those guys a show me the video they were trying to extort everybody trying to get paid for I I.
