"To see the quarter final feel. New York City FC advancing against Santos de Wales of Costa Rica her, the defending MLS champions through to the last day. Look at that ex U.S. men's national team. Look at that guy. Oh. Did he try to rabona? I think he did. I think he did. Is that a little bit like insulting or not? We just love the flair. Listen, it's somewhere in between. Okay, you're feeling yourself to stop insulting the robotics. Stop showing. Exactly. Yeah, this one was never closed. 6 nothing than the final on aggregate. A couple of giants in terms of Concacaf history. Winning 6 three on aggregate score some nervous moments throughout this time. Watch this finish. This game is a lot closer than the scoreline. I mean, it was a very good game. How about this? Look at this silky. Oh, I oh. You needed that one. Look at that. Look what it means to him. Who must then continue to do the work? And in the end, sapri sa could not respond. And you figured, right, boom, an overwhelming favorite in this time, but I think we gotta give the Costa Ricans credit. Yeah, they made it very interesting. Good game. If you catch it, catch it. And Ellen, against gua tatoya. Pretty smooth sailing here. Oh. Three nothing. The final on aggregate score. Oh, did you see that finish outside the boot? Look at the first touch. And look at this outside the boot side netting. You don't think lemon can do it, huh? Sleeping. That's right. Sleeping on my beloved Leon. Okay, Monterey, do we fall in the story for the last couple of days? And I went to fans clashing with play. We're not clashing probably not the right word. Confronting players outside facilities after the failure at the FIFA Club World cups and tense moments, potentially some dangerous moments from players. I have certainly would not be comfortable. If I were in their shoes, or what do you make of it? This is unfortunate. We're in a security here. Why are the fans so close to the players? It's going to easily escalate into something bigger, something more dangerous. You never want to see this. It's upsetting. It's not a reflection of how good these fan bases, especially monterrey can be. More experienced players, of course, echoed more. You've caught up with him earlier today. Let's listen in to that interview. Looking.

"Team Atlas, who are champions last season, okay? Their best players went there to reinforce that team and then you sold off your best players to clue America. What you left? This Santos are gonna team this better occasion your team is a reflection of what we see today. I think they're better than that record, but their last place in Liga and Mac is two points, the worst defense in all of Mexico, and if you know one thing about federation teams, defensively, they are good. Instead of giving them a chance to write this ship because there's no promotion relegation. So you're not going to get relegated instead of giving them that chance you yank him. I think it's more of a message to the fans than in anything else. He's been better than this in Mexico. And I think sometimes in sports and especially in league at Mickey's, we have a short memory. You know, I always thought of Santos as one of the better run organizations in Mexico. And I think when I say better run, I think I mean patient, right? Like you have to be cool in these moments. And not overreact. We see that so much in Mexican soccer where coaches are just hired and fired. And this feels like that, which is kind of out of stuff for Santos. I'm with you. You would have thought the kind of the past would have done him some justice bought him some time. I wonder, though, if they really, truly believe that this team can do better. Because if you look at the last two seasons at least, they're top 5. I mean, they're up there in dead last place now. So you can assume that this team can do somewhat better. I don't know how much better without Pedro casino, but somewhat better. Let's talk about the MLS legal mechanism of this because now Major League Soccer is one for one batting 1000% against we got to make this year. Is it circumstance or is this the beginning of the trend? And maybe the year we're finally MLS topples the IMF east and Concacaf Champions League. It could be a little bit of both. Let's be honest, we just mentioned how bad Santos laguna is in league play. Fine. That's not Montreal's problem. Montreal is in their pre season. They're not even started their season..

"And the U.S. wins, I'm sorry, U.S. women's national team do a very, very good job at that. All right, let's move on to the Concacaf W qualifier because we know the U.S. women's national team, they're already good. They're set for the cap W championship, which will be taking place July and monterrey. These are the teams trying to qualify for this is Nicaragua against Turks and Caicos, or the final score here, 19 to nothing. This reminds me of my youth career. How about yasinia Flores? 22 years old, 6 goals and 66 minutes. That's insane. That's a Hercules Gomez esque goal return. Oh, no keeper. Oh, good lord. Yeah. We got to work on that. Oh. That church a little fast, huh? Yeah, yeah, it's some epic goal or epic fail. Hey, what's the worst victory or what's the worst defeat you suffered and what's the biggest victory you have? Where's the feet was probably when I played an MLS LA galaxy we lost like 5 zero I think worst or best win when I was young. We won 21 zero ten years old. From Concacaf to the Concacaf Champions League. Round of 16, the only MLS ligaments match up that we got Montreal against Santos Santos winning the first leg in torreon, but just barely romantic, levels it here in the 9th minute hurt. What's up with us? Well, that third place fast, I said. You gotta come out, you gotta win it and Kyoto first man there. Silk silky finish without an angle. All right, something special about Montreal Thea at the Stade Olympic in Concacaf Champions League 22nd minute. God. First key out those steps on the ball like he's playing indoor and then this finish in tight space and take it home. Santos with a chance here just before the half. Nothing doing. Nah, they really didn't do much offensively and how about this? This is how they were feeling. Look at this shot. I'm not sure if this game was a good Montreal or bad son. We'll discuss that later, a 52nd minute more from Montreal. And then get some help off the line. Feisty. You don't want that smoke. A couple minutes later. Big save again for the moment anywhere, keeping Santos in it, but shortly after that, Montreal get there third. Kind of it's the assist going in the goal. Yeah, going in with the goal, but look at Jordy mikhailovich, get his head up, scan the field, and then find the nice, easy little to happen. So that's how it finishes Montreal three zero on the day eliminating Santos three to one on aggregates and here's what it means. That's right. Pedro Kai shinya. Has been relieved of his duties as the manager of Santos. Two months, not even two months, not even ten gains hurt, did he last? So what happened here is the sack warranted and was it your interview that jinxed him? It could have been my interview that jinxed him..

"Like it. I like it Conrad de la fuente with a goal in the Europa conference league. Get a Gutierrez as well. So a pretty good week all around for Concacaf players in Europe. So in our attention to the U.S. women's national team and the she believes cup, the United States against Iceland, U.S., it's a must win for this team. Iceland only needing a draw to kind of pull the shock upset in the she believes. Goal scoring got going in the 37th minute. Turkey was nasty. Oh, that is filthy. The moment she gets this and she cuts in, you know she's gonna shoot she knows she's gonna shoot. You know who doesn't? The goalkeeper. Of course, another goal from a cario in the 45th minute here. You think she meant to do this, some discussion on the broadcast last night. No, I think she's crossing that. But like I always say, I meant to be dangerous. I don't know, did she take a look there? I think she sees the goalie off her line. We gotta give her some credit there. Okay, 60th minute. Mallory pew so much talent and starting to come to life for the national team again. Here she makes it three. It's a filthy through ball right there. And then a sweet little finish. Iceland really starting to fall apart late as the U.S. pressed forward a two on one here, pew to makario, to pew, poor, I thought Barcelona played today. Look at that. Here comes the 5th in the 88 minute Christy Mueller Tapping home to make it 5 nothing is the U.S. wins the she believes cup for the third straight time. Here's the manager. Black coin and oste. There's.

"Then that our next guest here on football America is none other than Julie foudy, of course, one of the co owners of angel city FC. I know you were loving that schedule when it came out. What a way to start, huh? I know. Let's go. That's finally get going. Good lord. It's time, savvy. Absolutely. Should be a very fascinating game to kick off the challenge cup. Speaking of the NWSL, you know, we had the CBA completed just under the deadline late last week. I think from a player's perspective Julie, there's a lot to like. There's improved benefits. There's a chance that some TV money potentially down the road. We saw a massive increase in the minimum salary across NWSL. You've seen this from both perspectives as a player and also now as an owner. What do you think the biggest takeaway is from all this? It's a massive deal. The fact that it took ten years though to get the first CBA for the NWSL is too long. But the takeaway is is that it provides finally protections for players. You had on top of that a big issue they wanted to get into that was free agency. It's conditional free agency. It's staggered free agency, but that's good news for the players. More securities, more protections, paid paternity. Maternity leave paid mental health lead for 6 months. So there's a ton in there. And most importantly, I think, is the fact that you're able to play pay a player like Trinity Rodman as we saw with that massive contract, 1.1 million over four years. It gives you the freedom with the allocation money to now do that. You couldn't have done that in the past. And we need as a league to be keeping players here and attracting them here. And I think it gives the flexibility to teams to do that now for the big names. Bravo to the women who got free agency a lot faster than the men did. Good on them for pushing on that. Listen, speaking of CBAs, the women's national team CBA is going to end in March. One of the key components of that CBA, or the guaranteed contracts. Now I understand it was to supplement what they weren't getting at the club level. But in today's time, are those contracts still needed? Yeah, it's a great question, herc. Back in the day, which is, in my day, way back in the day, you didn't need that guaranteed salary, which is why they're structured differently because we weren't getting the millions or hundreds of thousands that the men were getting from their professional clubs. And so you needed that stability. There is an argument today, although interestingly enough, I haven't seen the full shift from the women's team to wanting to go to just contracts.

"Are snapping back at a fan. Who said Greg berhalter was known more for his kicks than his coaching, you were first in line to tell U.S. soccer's official Twitter account to delete this, which they eventually did, so I'm guessing you don't think that this is fair play. Hey, listen, I get if you're a committee manager if you're the administrator of a social media account, I get the objective, engagement. I get what you're trying to do. Read the room. Read the room is all I'm asking. It's a situation where a lot of fans feel that sometimes the manager sometimes the accounts are more worried about putting up what kind of shoes the managers wearing or the swag of this and that. And they don't realize there are a lot of fans that are very worried about the situation right now for the U.S. men's national team. They're sitting second place right now, heading into the most difficult window of World Cup qualifying to away games in two venues that they've never won at. And that home game is in Orlando against a direct rival to that direct ticket to the World Cup, so there's a lot of unsteady feelings right now, especially on social media. So this is a tweet. After qualification, is it okay then? I think it's illicit. Everything's okay when you're winning. Everything's okay when everything's going well. We're allowed to have fun. I think it's okay, but read the room, be smarter, and I get the objective, I get what the administrator of this page is trying to do. The engagement I understand that there's a reason they deleted it. Yeah. Well, you mentioned the admin, right? Whoever's running the account. And I figure they're probably never going to have to deal like face to face with a fan. Somebody who's going to know who they are. But you know who they might have to deal with face to face? Greg berhalter. And the players and I bet you if I'm Greg berhalter and the players, I don't mind this. They're standing up for me. This isn't a bad thing. I don't know. You think you think Greg berhalter and I have a problem with this. What do you want from the account the account standing up for their guy? That's not the coach is getting criticized? I think if I'm Greg bruhl, I'm just saying, leave it be. All you're doing is making things worse for me. That's all you're doing is just trying to increase the pressure. I'm just let it go. I don't really care. If I'm Greg warehouse, I say it's not important to me. Look, man, I don't know. I'm a little bit worried about you. I'm a little bit worried about you. I got to say that, yeah. This guy, you're mad, you're mad about the selfie. You're mad about fan voting. You're mad about the player tweet. I know you're on the wrong side of 40, dude, but you're acting like, you know, old man on a porch. Old man. Yelling about the way things used to be in April. The production will be there. You're invited as well. Oh, okay, yeah, I'm sure my invite will get lost in the mail. Let's turn our attention, hurt to some breaking news this Thursday on a Major League Soccer. And they're serious news as well. "And it was like, already like three zero, I think. But I'm in my head. I'm not thinking about the score. I'm just like, yo, that's crazy. You performances at shelka had you on the national team's radar, but then came the loss heard all around the world. October 2017, the U.S. national team humiliated in Trinidad and Tobago, failures to qualify for the 2018 World Cup. I woke up, you believe you actually had an outside chance of making for fans like me, it was bloody devastating. Many players had their international careers ended that night. Where did you watch the game? What was that emotional experience like for you? What went through your mind? The crazy thing is which people don't ever believe. I don't watch sports so I didn't watch the game. Seriously, you don't watch football. No. I don't watch anything, not even football in the bathroom or nothing. But that game, I recall because I was in gills and cushion at Nick categories apartment. Another American prospect, playing with shelter back in the day. I slept the night there 'cause we were gonna wake up go to train the next day. I woke up first. I was on the couch. And I look at my phone. I'm refreshing on Twitter to see the results. And I just see USA's not going to the World Cup. USA failed to qualify. And I get off of the couch. I run into his room. I jump on the bed. I'm like, yo. We didn't qualify. He looks at me. He's like, I'm like, bro, get up. We didn't qualify. Even though I don't watch sports, it was still devastating also. What are you devastated, was part of you like, um. Doors will open. Opportunity. I'm not someone that really tries to look for someone else's failure. To be able to succeed and open up my own doors because I feel like if I'm going to deserve if I'm going to work to my full capability, I know I'll earn a spot. You may be unlucky sometimes, but then it's just not in the plans for you. But I would never say I wish this player gets hurt or I wish they don't qualify. I wish they don't do this because then it opens up doors for me because that's not how I want to earn my achievements. I don't want it to look back and say, oh yeah, he only got that because so and so got injured or because so and so didn't qualify her. So it didn't make it for me. I want to look back and say he got that spot. He did all this because he was better. And that happened November 14th, 2017. You fulfilled your dream. First form, the 11 years earlier. When you met London Donovan, and the other U.S. men's national team players, you made your debut against Portugal. As a 17 year old, what did that feel like to pull on a U.S. Jersey for the first time to hear the national anthem? Did you allow yourself to feel a moment of recall going for the national anthem? I'm sitting there and it wasn't even like a full sellout stadium or nothing, but I'm just sitting there and I'm listening to the national anthem and I'm just like, no mean in any disrespect either. I'm like smiling, laughing in my head because I'm just thinking you made it to this point. You accomplished one of your goals. The best feeling about it was just to know that I had worked hard and earned it. And also, this is kind of my grudge and revengeful feeling is because the person that cut me the person that said I wasn't good enough that I wasn't ready was the assistant coach at that time. For the team. Who is that rituals? And I just thought to myself, I wonder if he ever pictured this moment pictured that I would make it to this point that I would ever be good enough I don't hold any grudges or nothing against it because if it wasn't for that, I wouldn't be the player I am today. So if he does see it, or this or anything, thank you. I thank you from all of us because I'll look at that game now. You are still so bloody baby face, but wow, baby faced assassin, inside 20 minutes, you pick the ball up on the edge of the area. Jink one way, cut the other, then just slap the ball past the goalkeeper to become the third youngest debuting scorer in U.S. history. What did that feel like? Was that just like any other goal or was it something truly special? For me it was something truly special. Maybe for veterans and for other people, it was like, oh, it's just a friendly game, but for me, it was the start of my journey, hopefully here. It's something that people will be able to know my name. People will look back and say, okay, that was that kid. It's not even for the fame. It's not for the glory. It's not for that. It's just for them to know I didn't give up back then when people thought I would. I didn't accept what they said about me. I just took it all in and used it to get to that moment again. You club career kept progressing and August 2020 after three years grinding in the Bundesliga and being linked to clubs across the Premier League. You made a leap and then some signing on loan initially for Italian powerhouse Juventus. Mate, just saying that, I've got to say, is amazing. What audacious move, one of the greatest by an American men's player. It's like something from the goal movie and even you've admitted that the outset that you spent some time wondering why did they choose me? I was in shock and I was just thinking whenever you come to a powerhouse club and a club with evens history, their background, their accomplishments, you think about their options as well. You say to yourself, they can literally go out and possibly get any other seasoned.

"John junior, your older brother, 8 years older than you. And you're both hanging out with some local kids a ball comes out and they don't want to let you play because you're too tiny. Your brother and sister God bless John junior, thank you John junior. Tell us what happened next western. The first memory I have moved in to Germany, the family was unpacking the stuff from the car, trying to move in. I didn't know what soccer wasn't over football. I didn't know any of it. I grew up playing American football, a new baseball. America. Hey, exactly. So we had a softball and we lived across from the elementary school that all the German kids went to. And I saw them kicking this big round ball and I was like, huh, I'm thinking the only the only balls that I know that are round are like a baseball basketball, a bowling ball, and I'm like, that has to hurt, so I take the softball and I start trying to kick it against the wall. I'm like, what is this? So my brother made the first friend. We went across to the school we played me being the smallest one, the youngest one. They obviously didn't want to give me the ball as much. But that's where I met my first German coach. David Muller. I think the nation of America is an incredible thanks to David Muller, your coach. He said he watched you and from the very first time on the field the glimpse you said, even though you were tiny, western was not intimidated and from the off. You were barking from the ball. I just love that image of a 7 year old play with much older kids, but demanding that through. I have grown up in a military family. I wasn't a shy person. And I was just someone I always wanted to be involved. You guys know my personality. I love the attention sometimes. And so just me being that age and being around them and growing up with older siblings, I was just like, just pass me the day on ball. I just want it. David Mueller told my mom to come up, he just took over the team. That was my age group of the village and I went up there and started training that a tryout first and some khaki shorts. Yes. Yes, this is true. Under 7 tryouts and you turn up for your to make a good impression 7 year old western McKinney in a polo shirt khaki shorts and American football cleats, right? Exactly. Exactly. I was just there to have fun. I remember one of the games we played actually that day was like duck duck goose. And I was like, yeah, I'm fast, so nobody's gonna catch me. Bullet decided to play you with his team, FC Phoenix, auto back. And first game, you casually chipped in just the 8 goals. And even when he moved you up to age groups, you western still bossed the park. And these early stories when I hear them, they make you sound like a natural. How much of your skill would you say western? Actually, is it a growing up in a competitive family, my mom ran track, my dad played American football in basketball when he was in the service. My brother did football, my sister did cheerleading. It was just an athletic family. And the main core traits that I have, I've developed from that. So maybe if I wasn't good at something, I found a way to be good at it or if I wasn't the strongest I had a mentality that I was the strongest. So it worked wonders for me. So for me, it's just something that I guess I was blessed with and that I can thank my family for just being naturally athletic. And I love this part of the story, jumped to 2006. The World Cup is about to be hosted in Germany and ahead of it, you age 7. Met London Donovan, Carlos baker and the rest of the squad after a training game and you've called this interaction in which you pay for photographs and they autographed your cleats as a quote life changing experience. Why was that? It was because moving to Germany had just found out what soccer was. And then to realize that it was actually played in America. It was a bit shocking for me. Were you like, what? Wait, we've got this at home, too. Yeah. And then to know that you could represent your country, you can play this big world sport and represent it on the biggest stages in the highest stages. It was an eye opener for me just because I thought, wow, I always thought, okay, I'm gonna leave Germany and go back to America and play American football. I'm just doing this right now just so to stay out of trouble, stay active. But I fell in love with the game and then meeting them was just like, wow, I can be that too. What goes on in your head the westing, so I've got to be honest. I still dream of playing for the American team. I'm still waiting for that call up from triple G but every American kid every English kid dreams are playing for England, but something went on in your head in that interaction. You actually set that as some kind of goal. It was just something that I saw and I thought like, wow, I wanna be like them, all these people are here like I didn't realize that it reached out and touched so many people just to meet these guys. They played a friendly against Poland and kind of sloughing stadium and I saw that game and I was like, wow, this is crazy like this whole atmosphere made me fall in love with the game. You learn you're really fundamentals in Germany in the rural region, which is football mad. But it also open your eyes to something that many American kids back then had no idea of just a depth of connection between Europeans and football, which is massive, celebrated its lived. It's almost like an element, earth, wind, fire, water, soccer. You know, that depth of connection didn't yet exist stateside, but you've said that what you learned in Germany state of you. Can you describe it for us? Whenever you go over to Europe and especially at that young age, the things that you have back in America, you walk around the street. You play pick up basketball. You play pick up football, you play, tie. You play all this other things. But there, it's like, you do all the things, yeah,.

"In the lead up to the men's World Cup later this year. Last episode, we kicked things off with the great toilet atoms. And now we're headed towards a trio of games in this, the penultimate window. It's really a seismic defining slate, including Sunday Night. And ice rumble. North, against a suddenly giddily ascendant Canada test that's a reminder if we needed one that Concacaf, though still played by prison rules, don't worry, that's not changing, but it is becoming ever more skilled confident and filled with challenge, and that the United States will be all the better for that in the long term. And so it's a magical time to check in with western McKinney a delirious talent in the peak form of his life. We caught up with him at Juventus training ground. For this, the second episode of Budweiser's American dreams, we dive into a singular journey. And honestly, in candidly, which is western style, dwell on the lessons about life he's derived from it. Here it is. My conversation with western McKinney. This is rodge and it's a true joy to sit here. With one of the most optimistic joyous elite players in the American men's game, a U.S. trail blazer, blessed with natural talent, positivity and buckets of swaggering self confidence. Our first met him when he was 18 years of age and has been one of the joys of my football watching life to glimpse him grow from strength to strength from Texas to Turin, where we now takes the field for mighty powerhouse Juventus, adapting to life in the Syria, as if propelled by an akiyo spell from his beloved Harry Potter. To me, he's Clint Dempsey's heir apparent, an American.

"Conrad can do the same to i. Some of these selections are very kind of i. I feel a bit frustrated by them to see what you're saying. I don't have as big problem with it. Just because i think that right. Now there's a lot of like we've talked about. There's there's depth fear. And i think there's a lot of competition at a lot of these spots like players have emerged in a way that maybe like when tim way first emerged. Ricardo peppy wasn't really on our radar. You know matthew hoppy guys like that right but like now. Those are players to that are also competing for spots so for me andrew. Sorry to cut across you again. But paul areola for me is like a decidedly. You know we have an nba team in this us. Men's national we've seen that. During the summer he would be decidedly team player for me. Yeah i would agree with you. But i think bear halter does value some measure of experience mixed in with all these youth players with all these not youth players young players on the team. Okay maybe that's a role that he can occupy. The i don't know i know that there's there's always gonna be some frustration with these teams that are selected and part of. That is what i just said that. I think there's a lot of the pool feels larger now than what it was even a year ago. So there's always going to. There's always going to be people who who they feel. Their guy was left out. And i get that. I was surprised about pete. Fox maybe not quite as much conrad just because in his limit granted limited appearances so far for the us. He's he's done anything that's really stood out. No but i wouldn't has either not particularly but i'm fine with working with like okay like now it's way turn. Let's see now you get a chance to prove it again. If he doesn't do anything in this in this cycle of of qualifying in these three qualifiers than he may not be included in the next one is. We'll see like i said they. They just have a large pool to choose from right now so bear halter kind of like take chances with certain guys and i don't know generally i was okay with it. Yeah i think it's interesting. Also in the midfield look dilatory from hurricane will Will be of the squad a wonder will he get a run where we get a run three caps already so i'm curious to see if he's going to feature what's that. I don't have a huge amount of problems. I'm just no. I'm trying to air voice for the people understand upset with the forwards. I got that Weston mckennie being included in the squad. I have no problem with it whatsoever. I don't think that what happened in the last. You know i. It's a mark against him. It's something that you remember. If he slips up again then we can have an even bigger conversation. But i don't think this is the thing that you know. You're looking at any permanent suspension or anything like that by the way. He's still a very good player. And where without christian pulisic and geo raina so. If the us was looking to send some kind of message to weston mckennie i think it was adequately sent. When he was sent home from the last cycle he was embarrassed. It was an embarrassing moment for him. It made news here and in europe So further compounding. That with ben not bringing him back for these three qualifiers. I think now is. You're going too far in doing it. So i have no problem with them deciding okay. We move on western. Still a part of this this structure and we're happy to have him here so no for me no issue whatsoever with him being back. I'm happy that he's back. Yeah jeff carolina tweeted. This is from the press conference yesterday. This is on weston mckennie bear halter talking the one thing. I didn't love in how this whole thing got. Spun is just the lack of tolerance to lack of understanding for a player situation for the fact that we have a young group and this group needs to learn. I think we're we're too quick to condemn people not really understand a player's perspective listen. His behavior was unacceptable. He took responsibility for it. And we move on. We really do move on but will he be held accountable in the future. Absolutely that's going to be a part of it and he understands that the group understands that so we move forward. What what way was this spawned. All wasn't spun by anyone and we still haven't had we still haven't had a full explanation as to exactly specifically what happened from from. Us soccer are from gregg berhalter. What's the on about spin from lack of tolerance. There shouldn't be tolerance for this kind of behavior. There wasn't tolerance so why who what spinning are spawning. Is johanna boat. I don't get it that the media didn't spin this. Yeah i don't really. I don't remember feeling that way really either. Maybe he's using the word spin when he kinda means overreacted I don't know. I thought the reaction honestly. I thought it was appropriate. I thought it was appropriate for how the us handled it. Although i don't know it seemed like maybe they could have revealed a little bit more information about it rather than allowing you know rumors to run But that's not necessarily their job to you know to tell us everything that we want to know. Just out of our own curiosities and i was kinda fine with the reaction from the fan base and the media as well you know. It was a dumb mistake that he made and he got hammered for it. So i think i don't know i've kind of thought it was fair all around and i think it's fair that berhalter's bring him back in now and they're trying to move on from it and you know i think it's i'm all good with all of it And then so. "Conrad can do the same to i. Some of the selections are very kind of i. I feel a bit frustrated by them to. I see what you're saying. During the summer he would be decidedly abi team player for me. "Line is. And then no matter what happens in hunters they know they can get away with anything and weston mckennie was called out for the second time. The event is transgressions. That's a certain extent because you've been in that room for uv. it's difficult. i understand it. This was blatant. His was blatant in this center. Message to everyone in that room. Coaching staff to the twenty-six six player on the roster more important than you know what. I'm out i'm out. I don i read the lose twenty five guys. That are all in it together than someone that thinks. They're better than the team or someone thinks they're bigger than the team. Especially in this moment. i'm sorry. I it's inexcusable to me. Yeah and that's the issue right there right. This isn't the first defense you have that you vent party hanging over your head and maybe taylor and some other people are privy to information that we're not privy to but when this all comes out and if it looks as bad as we suspect it's going to be worse for gregg berhalter because now you have decision to make. How do i perceive going forward and as a team with already a bunch of doubts that what you want. You want one of your best players in here. You don't want to have the doubt of what we do. Now do we call him a call him in or don't we have a. Don't you have a doubt if you call them in. And how he's going to behave based on what he did you then just based on what we've seen. Now i mean that's that's kind of the problem is he. Is he worth the risk. Moving forward obviously player. Who plays it. You vent is in the national team pool. There's not many of those but to some point. I mean you know. Isn't there more to be done not yet set up to your point though like. He hasn't been good for the national team. He hasn't been other than the nation's league final against mexico. Has he been that dominant. No he's been too lackadaisical on the ball. He's giving away possession too many times through the middle of the park and they have shown them that time and time again. Now i'd argue. The system may not be working for weston mckennie with the national team. He may be played out of position talking with people with events and where he's thrived for them versus where start for the national team. But just because you're playing event is when you come into the group. I'm sorry you can't act. As if you're bigger and better than the team and greg burr alternate staff called them on his bluff so the pressure now then switches right to gregg berhalter and i wonder if we really truly believe taylor if come wednesday night gregg berhalter managing for his job because i would suggest for applying the same standard that we did to the last coach. You're getting then either. Basically at around the same spot of the qualifying cycle so if gregg berhalter behind the eight ball badly coming out on us is his job on the line it better be otherwise like who like what. What's the point of this. I mean have we not learned from the last world cup qualifying.

"Me josh sergeant folk. I would've switched the games they played. I wouldn't play can sell salvador knowing that. I can play a little bit more direct. I can play ogg pressure. Sits hurt you know this better than anyone. Playing on the road and kept. It doesn't need to be pretty. It needs to be effective. But when you know your own up against canada were you know by the way in two thousand. Nineteen they gave you. The blueprint blueprint. Excuse me in toronto. How they were gonna play you. You need more mobility factor. I would not even played sergeant through the middle. I would have played pulisic through the middle. It was way predictable for me against a team where you knew you knew at the end of two thousand nineteen. This is exactly how canada's going to beat you. They gave it to you. They they showed you exactly what they were going to do. And yet you played right into their hands. If those are my two strikers for this these two games. I'm flipping the games to give them something else. But to be honest with i probably would've played politic through the middle because knowing if he stuck out on the left he's going to be pinned and you're not going to see a ton of influential touches from. I don't know about the low point for the strike. I started world cup game. So that the us visibilty but going back to what you said. I actually have that jotted down. I would've switched the strikers. Because you look at josh. Sergeant folk isn't a guy you want holding the ball and he doesn't really have that ability to turn. He's more of that and he's going to finish things off. Josh sergeant may be missing that goal but the intangibles that he has with the ball. he's clean. He turns degree combined with people that would have been great against. Can we talk about that inability in that final third to breakdown lines to have somebody drop every time to people the ball. It was literally coming back to wherever gave him the ball. It was ruined right back to you. It was a lateral never. Wants to turn with josh charging came on the very first thing he did was turn with. They drew a foul. I agree with that. But here's the reality things whether it's on the road whether it's at home you have to create chances for these players and you're not creating chances from the first game you were jumping that midfield line route one. The second game was nowhere in existence this game. Even if it's gotta be this chance in on us because he's got that. I guess that being so young that he could be bold and it won't affect them if you give him that chance he's still needs these opportunities. That's something that is not created though scoring chances. So here's the number nine. We're basically you're gonna play a false nine. That's the best hope now for on as maybe to play a false are we that far from bringing in bringing back like jesse's artists into the conversation obviously was healthy. I think he'd be in this team. Salvador's healthy. I mean how far we from some of those names getting into this conversation when you talk about these number nine's and the opportunities that time after time or getting are getting squandered. Let's get to the big elephant. The room guys. Weston mckennie taylor. You're you're a real strong on this on social.

"Midfield just because he can actually pass the ball and has some personality. I'm like the folks who played their last year So i think that is a big plus. I legally very open about it. He was hoping to get another midfielder in You know he's not high on an archer or raviol- probably core to your most of midfielders cristiano saying obviously impacts everything But from their perspective they were certainly hoping to bring in a center forward to replace manab. Noise can moist. Ken is is in. They see more of a season more of a winger type than somebody who can lead the line. He's an interesting one because when he was a part of the reason let him go is that we're briefing that you know. He's he was a bit of a head case and his he wasn't serious about being a pro or whatever. Now they're all saying oh look he's matured so much for power signs your man and you know learning from learn his professionalism. You hope he may maybe more from imbaba than from name out. But they're something that as as applause. They got the kid george as well so you know they feel that they have enough weapons to be competitive this season but obviously legally will also feel that. They've missed out on at least two targets. And i wonder wouldn't be surprised if we see them back in in january just to round out the squad. Weston mckennie remains the event is player advocates are posted in uk that he was talking to a number of clubs including burnley. Yes and here. It's kind of interesting. Because i was told about the only thing and Burdening said well. We stopped away the minute we realize that the the intermediaries who were offering him to us. They're not actually agents quite a bit in football. Where no you go to the club and you say hey do you want so and so and how much you're willing to pay for it and if you have credibility they say we'd be willing to pay this much we can do this contract. Then you go back to the club at the agents and say ooh we've got burnley lined up for you but you gotta do the deal through us. So burly credit to them sniffing these people out and so weston mckennie stays where he is just confirmed show some of the other. Us international transfers. That have taken place this summer. "This is the headline news. Well let's start with some great news because the us men's national team was crowned champions of the gold cup in the final against mexico last night claims were tied at zero going into extra time and the us pulled off the win with a late goal for miles robinson in the one hundred and seventeenth minute. Now this is the us seventh gold cup title and second straight victory against mexico in a tournament. Final and now the team can shift. Its focus to the star of the world cup qualifying next month now calling. I know you watch this. This was such an exciting edge of your seat. Listen we didn't play weston mckennie or christian pulisic nor was this mexico's top team but it did show that we've got more depth than we've had in recent years and when you consider where we were a few years ago when we could not make the world cup how low united states men's soccer was it was the low many believe it was the lowest point in twenty five years was bad was bad and now we come back and there's no question. Pulisic is the greatest individual talent we've ever had. And there's a handful three to four other young emerging stars who are really skilled. also i thought matt turner and goal was terrific. Mexico had half dozen really good shots on goal yet. He's got an interesting story. You can read about it on the athletic. But i think we're in good hands and it just felt different than other gold cup went. It felt like yeah when you consider how low we were about three years ago two years ago and what we have in the future i mean i watched it and i watched our announcers get emotional. I felt like wow. This feels like you know what i always say..

"Start with the game itself because it was as we said at the top an instant classic the united states winning three two in the first ever concha caf nations league final mexico at twice both from decca tito goals from the is the. Us came back twice. Goes off corner kicks or one. From june from weston mckennie mexico waved off. For an offside on xtra moreno very close off side to to as we headed into extra time and then it was a story of two penalties christian pulisic converted. His and undress were not save by. Ethan horvath hark. Perhaps it wasn't the greatest game aesthetically. What in terms of spectacle in terms of rivalry truly truly delivered especially for tournament. An event the nation's the that we've all been downplaying for quite some time. Yeah we've been downplaying it and you can say whatever you want about the importance of tournament or not at the end of the day. It's a final. It's vs mexico that captivates that gets the attention when you talk about. Was this a good outing of football display. No it wasn't pretty by any standard tactically. Technically lacking very deficient both teams in certain areas individual performances. That were very deficient. But then you had these wait. A second. Look at meet type performances. You had these look where this is going. Dramatic pauses twist plot us events like var calls. Whatever may be that. we're just dramatic. They were just like where are we going with this. It just kept you on the edge of your seat every single twist and turn you knew it was because it was important versus mexico. Us men's national team playing in denver playing at home a very young promising team against qigong cough. So by no means was it pretty but everything you would wanna final the dramas the twist that turns everything this had.

"About is some players don't even show symptoms of it so it's it's it was a little bit crazy and then. I think that's one of the reasons why we The season's not season but the league has stopped so far because I think it'd be too much of a hassle to you know say we're we're plane behind closed doors in the one player gets it on the Dortmund and been the whole team has to be quarantined. And it's like okay. Well we can't. This team can't play this weekend but these two cans so I think was. It was the smarter decision to to stop the League's right now. Do you know if there are any cases of corona virus at the club. Your club as the right now. No there there. There hasn't been any And hopefully there won't be Like I said we're doing the best. We can sustain isolated from each other. And so. Yeah as right now there. There hasn't been any any cases of the club. Now you mentioned Dortmund Rival club also close in proximity location. Wise to where you live. There's an American Giovanni rain who plays for Dortmund Have you had a chance to to meet him? Or communicate with him recently. yeah actually. We were part of the same agency Wasserman. So we've definitely linked before we actually Richard Motzkin in David. Me Out here a couple of weeks ago and we all sat down. Had dinner before this Holkar on took over kind of You have me not. I'm always I told him in in those. I think as well that if she ever needs a anyone to hang out with her just wants to come over and chill like he's more than welcome obviously right now and the circumstances will are to do such a thing but I I understand where he's at right now 'cause dorman he lives on the facility like in the complex and all the kids practically have gone home there so he's he's practically all alone by himself. Which is kind of a bummer. Yeah he's a teenager too. Yeah so he's in a different life stage exactly. So it's it's definitely I mean. I can imagine art for Him. Right now because. I don't know what I'd be doing now. Nick was here with me so indefinitely. Be Bihar than what it is. Yeah I mean obviously we talked about how soccer in the grand scheme of things. Isn't that big a deal right now? While we're here I want to ask you to sort of about your season. And how you viewed it as shock at chocolate. Yeah we came Shokhin. Generally we came up the gates running We we came out in in. You know I guess shocked people because you wouldn't expect I mean shockers a team that normally should be top top five out for you know anyways so I think it was a shock just from the last season that we had fighting relegation to come out. You know the first half of the season Up there in the Europe I guess you can say your qualifications rankings. So I think it was good. It's been good so far. These past Games have been treated the school. I O N. We're in a difficult phase of amine as much as I don't want to say maybe the current situation that we're in right now could have also been been official as well maybe Depends on how you look at it. you know we take a break in. Ino CLEARER HEADS. Come back in his starts up soon in. Hopefully this. This whole thing is is over. Soon we can get back in and concentrate. Everyone has a clear head and everyone's eager to to play in to get back on the field so I think that could also be a beneficial part of the of the whole situation. Now you try to. I try to always look at the positive things that come out of situations like this right now. So what's the positive that agency out of it? You had a great goal recently It was the first time you've scored in a while in the boonies was good to get back on the scoresheet. Yeah it's actually really funny My my physio mean and him were talking. You know that same day actually while I was getting a massage talk. I think you're gonNA score tails you know. I'm thinking to Myself Avenue scored since I you know I don't know how long ago under eighteen and scored two goals in. They're both in the same week so been pretty but then I also for some reason had a weird ceiling about it feels like al-Qaeda scoring today us new and we and we told each other before the game like okay like will do this celebration if you score insurance or in the during the celebration and uh yeah so might have to have that talk some more before the game You've had a new coach. This season. David Wagner Guy who played for the US men's national team back in the day. What's that been like? What have you learned about? It's been really good. Obviously I've had the the the I guess. Lucky nece when it comes to coaches a connection with him as well Like I had a good connection with a Dominican Tedesco in the past He's he's one of those coaches he can relate a little bit. More is a little bit different than to desk going away. That didn't play at the professional level in in you know they evacuated now has played in. So He's actually been there done it. He knows like when a when a player he can tell when a player's body is tired. I can tell when you know we might need a break or might need a day off or something like that. And he's he's very easy to talk to as well Many many people. I think that mean him speaking English. But you know we speak in German which Pretty interesting for me as well out of the -ssume that we spoke English but Yeah we we go back and forth in we we. We talk often Whether that's you know I can be better on the field or how can be better off the shield or if I'm doing good or ninety to pick it up that's one of the things I really like about him? He's ease straight into the point about it. He doesn't trench sugar. Coder find back doors to you. Know give you a reason of why you're not doing this away. Not playing or something. He straightened to the point like. Hey you're not performing so you're not playing or a you're doing very well like keep it up so that's definitely a beneficial thing about him. You're supposed to get together with the US. Men's national team later this month for the first fever window in a while. Those Games obviously have been canceled How tough is that To not be able to play with your national team teammates for so long honestly it was it was it was pretty crappy situation because I was thinking to myself like the first camp. We have in Europe in such a long time. I don't have the traveling ten hours it's canceled of no but it's definitely a you know we we all keep in contact as well Over gaming platforms fortnight than than call of duty. So we're all looking forward to seeing each other again many of the guys. We haven't seen since like you said last natural break which has been awhile So it was. It was devastating as well. You know we have two good Games nederlands Wales and really looking forward to it but With the current situation we kinda got a taste the In just look forward to the next thing. So hopefully like I said it'd be amazing. If this thing could clear by summer than you know we could play qualifying in you know hopefully cough I also also for the Olympics in have also in the summer but you know. Take a day by day as of right now in and see what happens. Yeah I mean it's it's looking. They would cancel the Olympic qualifying tournament. And obviously you would have been able to be a part of that but If the US had qualified for the Olympics your age eligible right so lake if if the Olympics happened if they happened later on. Is that something you'd be interested in being a part of low? Yes for sure. Sure sure for sure it's it's it's It's for soccer players as well. I mean like you said my age It would literally be once in a lifetime experience. I'd definitely with a would seize that opportunity and go over there and get to experience. You know the the whole Olympic set up in you know you watch it as a kid and you see the ends of course. I didn't watch sports really. Don't watch sports really. But there's something about tracking shield that that makes it exciting and fun to watch so I've been pretty cool to be there and see that as well. That's a fascinating statement. You don't watch sports. Is that accurate? Yeah it's accurate. I I know people have different ways. They approach things. You know like whenever. I've talked to Tyler Adams. He's like obsessed with watching other soccer games. But that's but not. Everyone looks at it that way. It sounds like no. There's people that record soccer games on the weekend Rewatch them in them. The person that records movies to rewatch himself got two hundred fifty eight movies in my library. So I'm just upset. She now I mean looking toward the end of the year God willing. We're GONNA have soccer again. God willing this virus has been taken care of World Cup qualifying with. They're supposed to be six. World Cup qualifiers Toward the end of twenty twenty in a very relative short period of time. Are you like when you think about that? And that opportunity could that be away for the public the American public to really get a sense that the US men's national team is back. Yeah I think I think yes With the devastating situation that happened in the previous World Cup Obviously I think many Americans in many people are looking forward to seeing how we do in qualifying To See what this. This new group is about You know we couldn't we. Could I guess people people don't really look at the the friendly games that we play and say like okay? This is a team. This is a lot as you know for. Sure they just say Oh. It's just a friendly game. Let's see how it is in qualifying so it's definitely something that could Alp ease the mind I guess of of the US soccer's of orders. And obviously we try and do the best that we can with every game that we every game that we play and sometimes you get lucky but I think if we could you definitely like you said got willingness viruses over. We are a play soccer. Can I think that's something that all of us are really looking forward to seeing some of the players The ones that weren't involved such as myself still have a better taste in our mouth about it so definitely have something to show. What's next? He is Weston mckennie. He is working with Christian Pulisic and Tyler Adams to donate their own money but also asked the rest of you to donate to feeding America. "weston mckennie" Discussed on Planet Ftbol with Grant Wahl

"Selene bounder next up. Is My interview with Weston mckennie. Our guest today is Weston. Mckennie the American player who plays shock in Germany West. How are you? I'm good? I'm good and yourself do que All things considered with all the stuff that's happening in the world right now. How are you holding up Well Luckily I'm. I'm not the only American right now. on my team got nick category at your with me so We're practically corentin ourselves. Together we shout that has delivered bytes dust that we have workout so he ended up having his bike brought to my place so we workout together run together. Got Two dogs live out in the country practically here in Germany. So it's a it's been okay. A lot of video games as well But other than that just trying to stay a stay isolated as much as possible and not gone out in public in interacting with a lot of people as much as I normally like to do that but I gotta put it on pause right now. Yeah totally understand Before I forget. Let's talk a little bit about what you announced here on Saturday. Recording this You announced Christian Pulisic and Tyler Adams. What are you guys doing? Yeah so I mean we put our heads together and and we want to help out with the current situation even though we are over here in Europe We definitely pay attention to how this current viruses affecting America so we. We partnered up in teamed up with feeding America and decided to donate a together in in in terms of helping people get food that they need a because you know food has been a struggle as well in hunger has been a struggle in America for a long time a long period of time. Now in Kerr virus in the effects it has on people. Losing their jobs and people not being able to go out in public I think the donation that we have towards them can definitely benefit with the helping getting people food that they need. So where can people go? Where fee feeding America has a bunch of food banks and soup kitchens and all that all around the around America so It's pretty pretty easy access affiliate and as far as you know donating wise You know we we posted on our instagram. My social media's they could click the links in our in our BIOS for the people that are willing to help because on situations like these things you know. That's one thing that makes America Such powerful country because we come together at times like this and then. That's what makes a big big crisis that we've suffered in the past nine eleven and things like that. We've all come together and overcome it somehow. So I think you know right now is another time in the big big effect this Viruses having the time to come together so you know every penny penny hopes and everything that people do Right now to to help the person next them also while isolating themselves as as a beneficial as fellow American. I just want to say thanks for for what you and and those other guys are doing and hope people donate you mentioned your with. Nick tied we right now. Obviously you're in contact with Christian PULISIC and Tyler Adams. How are you communicating with those guys We we barbecue on the weekends so now I guess is later. Selbe over the phone dollars out in Leipzig in Christians in London. So WE HAVE HOUSE PARTY. We have facetime we tax snapshot so we We have online video games. We talked to the microphone with so with definitely keep in contact in many different ways Got It so what are you doing this kind of a basic question but for your own food right now so I think Right now I've not a big cooker myself. I had a person that comes over. And you know it's something that I've been doing. You know 'cause my my biggest thing was my eating habits and so I have a personal comes over and cooks for me and Neil healthy dishes and stuff too that works for my body. The help Minimized my injuries as well So as a right now he's still comes over in this time shock. La's is I think partnering up with with His company to help get food to all the players as well Because like I said we're trying to stay isolated as possible in that also includes trying to avoid shopping centers in China. Void go into the grocery stores. And so it's it's difficult also to to go out you second. Guess yourself you're like. Oh the store or any gas in the car. In things that you never did. Before like put gloves on the pump. Your gas than you know. Go to the store in but your shirt over your nose in walk around. Aden shredded minimize touching everything It's definitely definitely hard in something. I think many of us have never experienced before. Oh yeah that's what I'm doing so far. When was your last training session? I think actually fry Friday before before the Yeah Friday before the Derby play on Saturday and Friday was our last training as a team. I mean I trained individually of course We have our runs. We ever programs that we have to do and our workout so I do that every day. Just to stay fit. 'cause we never know when when the season might start up or if it will start up again so it's kind of a a situation right now. You always has to be prepared. Yeah I in terms of the actual workouts by yourself that they're having you do. What are some of the specifics on on what you're doing in those also like endurance of course is one of them? You know we have to run everyday practically tomorrow. We'll be in Austin Bay So today Iran you know four times. Four minutes of intensive running With ten minute warm up so they try and talk late so we run about thirty five forty five minutes a day and then the workouts we have you know some of the some guys able to take from the training grounds to take home and they also delivered equipment that we needed so for me. I I had most of the equipment here just needed a bike cycling bites a stationary bike to to have at home that I can use as well so they will ever thought and yet they send the programs out. Of course I'd be my own thing practically in with my upper body strengthening my legs my core so just as one of those things now you can have to get creative a bit so it's a pretty interesting. Yeah I mean it really is. I mean my wife ordered US rowing machine ten days ago. So we've got that set up in our New York City apartment here. I'm just trying to stay fit. I'm not a pro athlete. And that's why it's it's gotta be crazy. Are you doing these workouts like in a park or near your house or in my garage? I have like a power rack in in my garage of can do bench press squats. Who LOVES DIBS I've kettlebells lehrer on my living room. I have my my Yoga Mattsson in my dumbbells might treadmills and bikes and stuff in my living room. So it's a I guess you could say it's a bit crowded right now turning linger practically to my home gym But yeah it's like I said just trying to stay isolated going my backyard as well in have ropes with me. Also that I took from Shaikha so is definitely like I said everyone. I think everyone right now is getting creative to to what they can do in. Everyone's avoiding the gym Which is good Also high risk placing to pass on the virus. So yeah it's just a creative process. Yeah I can imagine it was it. I obviously everyone's health is so much more important than soccer right now but like to have no this very big gain. This big Darby game get cancelled right before you were about to play in it. What was that like to go through? Honestly I think many of us were. I don't want it to come off wrong but were happy that it happened because you know as a player and of such a big game lake the Derby you know to play without fans would be would be almost. I Dunno would be undescribable practically like it's a game. That is one of the biggest in Germany's one of the biggest derby so around the world so to play with.
