But yes, the story that score I could see this is going to be pretty big just came down like a minute or two ago. And I see everybody talking about this one. Virginia College just forfeited their basketball game. They suspended every player that took a need during the anthem. Um they said, everybody who takes any. You're suspended. Everybody took it me. They suspended the entire team for the most part or everybody who took me and they did not play a game. Bluefield College in Western Virginia forfeited their game. You think anybody's gonna have anything to say about this one or what I could I could imagine this could become a story here on the next few days. I go ahead, although I'm sorry, but they were told before the year they could kneel. Then they were found that they were told that they couldn't. The coach kept them in the locker room for a while, But then the players ignored the demand and some took the knee. They were suspended and then have enough to play the game going. What did you make of Mark Cuban, not wanting to play the anthem. Cause I'll just if you want me to go first go. I'm kind of at the point where I would be okay with it, And I understand there's probably people that served in the military that feels differently. And I respect your opinion. And you know if you feel differently, I'm sorry if I've upset you What this has now become a divisive topic. Where, um, you know, people that do feel want to stand for the anthem feel like they can't and I don't know it's It's a very I didn't have a problem with Mark Cuban saying, You know what? "That talking with my guy sean. Farrell accords light. This is a huge deal for coors light to you guys now part of the team and i've been with cores light for number years Unbelievable not just a great beer but but great organization and a great group to be partnered up with so congrats on that. And i'm glad we we're now teammates. We're very excited because Little known fact. My favorite thing in the entire world is when the mountains do turn blue. There's nothing better in the entire world than when you get an actually like i think it's something psychological about seeing cold as well as feeling the cold that makes it the best beer in the world. So that's All right let's talk a little ball of sock little actually want to talk a little game day too i think. Pf does as well. let's start with. Let's start with game day. Let's start with game day You've been doing the show forever. It's it's an unbelievable show it's I think i think it actually might be the show that the most like the highest approval of any show out there. Everyone loves game day. No one doesn't like game day. What is your favorite college. Campus to go to and What's like the craziest Like one off like maybe one that you've been to that you haven't been back to the light to go back to you. Know twenty five years for me. I don't know where you guys were twenty five years ago Properly elementary school. But i was. I've been doing this for a long time. We first started doing this. It'd be like like we'd probably use senior show grow there. Maybe a couple hundred people around are set of course didn't even put on a mascot head he would just find somebody around the At a crazy hat itself somebody to go grab it and then things changed and the michael bicker frank. Beamer was the first coach to kinda get what game day was and he was the first coach to recognize it and really embrace it and challenged the hokey nation When game day comes to. Virginia tech in blacksburg bring many fans we can. We had like twenty thousand fan show up one time to a college game day in the late nineties. Maybe around two thousand just changed everything for from that point on because he was the first coach to recognize what it could do. It's basically an infomercial If you include sportscenter and everything. We do on friday and saturday. It's like a forty eight hour commercial for the school. So he got it. It changed everything. where i love to go. I mean i'm from the big ten I grew up in ohio. Obviously if you eliminate columbus where's home. I love going to places like wisconsin. I love going to penn state in the big ten because the radical they love college football. They're they're passionate. I just loved one of places astronaut about the sport the sec. Minute's pretty much interchangeable. You go to anywhere down there. Tuscaloosa athens baton rouge there. They're all kind of eugene. Oregon would shock you guys. Maybe now they have more reputation. When i first went out. To eugene oregon. I couldn't believe it was dark out six in the morning. And there'd be tanner. Fifteen thousand people was far as you could see so. Those are the obvious places. Some of the fun ones. You guys are like j. Amu yeah fargo or ota places like that when they told me we're going there initially i was like what's what are we doing. And then you go there in the entire town shows up or downtown fargo it so those are the ones that typically stand out when we go to places like that. Harrisonburg is the paris france of western virginia. That's what they often say. It's a great place to visit. Yeah is there something in the contract with college game day where you have to have kenny. Chesney on a certain amount of times per year is it like now. It's like we don't have a guest speaker. Might as well call kenny. He's got nothing to do kitty. Eric church luke. Bryan you're going on a ton no no. I just think you know we we try. I don't even know who comes up with the ideas. I know we have. We have a an entire department. They try to get creative and trying to come up with with different people. It's challenging man. I mean we're even offering a free plane ride to come fly over in. This is back in the days when we're in. The show is traveling now. We just assume people in bill murray's been on a bunch will ferrell's been on a bunch And yeah it seems that we we definitely have our fair share country. Music star is a one campus. That you've been on where you've either you or somebody else. College game day has had either bad. Take or an aggressive. Take about that school and you get there and you're actually like a little bit fearful because the fans are like scream at you a little bit louder than normal like they might start throwing stuff achy. Have you ever had to put up the chicken. Wire that the using blues brother's yeah. Yeah yeah yeah we. We have chicken wire. it's like it's like an invisible net that we have around the entire thing because people used to throw things mainly corso But but i would get friendly fire as well. The only time. I've experienced that is Michigan fans are early in my career. I'm pretty much where i'm talking to you guys right now. It's kinda how. I talk on the air michigan fans. I've always treated michigan any other team. But just being in ohio state guy was like back in Let's say ninety seven we were up in ann arbor. Ohio state was undefeated. Michigan was undefeated. Your michigan went on to win. The national title would woodson and They they threw like snow. Ice balls. hit me in the chest me in the back of the head. It was before we had the the net up i take that was what led to that and somebody threw a full gear can one time and drilled right between corso in is head in blew up came force. It blew up on the on the set When it landed. I think after that our bosses said You said that there's some strong opinions people in college football. I think more so than the. Nfl yeah there it takes you know what i mean. They take it really personally. And so yeah you you you feel that from time to time when we when we go out on the road again. We have been on the road in over a year. Now that's what makes college football college football though i you know. I love her to debate with people when we get to play off time on twitter and people will sometimes be like. Oh man like why. Are you spending your time like you know an entire afternoon on a wednesday debating with random people like. That's what i like. I like doing it because everyone is super passionate their debates. Unfortunately that we can't always decide on the field but that's what college football college. Football totally agree. It's subjective right. Even the playoff committee only.

"Hello you're on car talk. This is melody. And i'm calling from las cruces new mexico. What's up well. The problem is i haven't been in las cruces resident for very long and here. We developed a car trouble out here from where connecticut Maryland close maryland maryland. What happened is three weeks ago. We got our nineteen eighty-three ford ranger tuned up and we had all the belts replaced because it seemed like a prudent thing to do. Yeah spent about two and a half weeks ago. We laughed and four hundred miles into our trip Actually we're listening to car talk. I think on the radio to west. Virginia Nowhere in bristol western virginia but not west virginia but those close so far calls. Maybe we'll be this coastal the answer anyway hundred miles into the trip. We developed this really nasty noise in the truck. And i can make it. We practice less my husband. And i practice last night in harmony. We weren't that good and it did that. For how long Well it's still does it or doesn't costly sort of you can't hear it at high when the engine really gets revving up. You can't hear it. And i don't know if that's because it disappears are just gets lost in the rest of the engine noise ye. Yeah and we took it to a garage here to have it looked at and they listen to address. The funny looking stuff is go kind of thing and they said that underneath. That noise was the noise of water. Pump going bad so they replace the water pump. And they said that when they took out the water pump. The water was all brown milk and they said that the noise that we're hearing is somewhere in the engine block and they didn't do that kind of repair so the bottom line question is since they don't do this repair it. Sort of sounds like it was going to be a big item thing. Question is do we get rid of the truck or do we pay to have it repaired. Well this is a v six engine. I'm going to guess i. It's a real wimpy six. Some of the metaphor don't think could have been a four. Probably will i think they're all v. Sixes anyway. I'm gonna tell you what the noises. The noise is a worn rocker arm assembly. And he's kind of famous for that. I bet you the noise if they listen it's coming out of one of the valve covers a warn rocket block. Yeah warn atlas rocket a warn rocker arm assembly if you take it if you take it someplace that does do repairs on things other than water pumps tell them to listen under the valve. Cover in fact better than that. They can even take the valve cover off the emails. See the risk of having oil. Shoot all over the place. They can actually run the thing and they can hear going. He as those rockers being rocked back and forth by the action of the push rods against them. What's happening is that rocker is digging into the shaft. because it probably hasn't gotten proper lubrication. But i think these were problem with with these This is a problem. This will get much worse. But just a tiny i mean. My brother-in-law has this very same vehicle and his started making this noise. I don't know maybe four years ago and he drove it like that for these past four years only recently throw out the engine and put another one in. Which is what will happen to you if you don't fix it pretty soon. The valves will stop opening. Which is what's going to happen to. Thomas brother-in-law's yeah already junked stop running. That's why junked it. Yeah so that's what you need. Have someone take the valve covers off or bring the valve covers off. That's gonna fix it okay. But you should. You should fix it because all those pieces of metal that have been true and spit out a winding-up circulating around with you lubricant. And i don't think you really want that to happen unless you looking for a new vehicle. Okay is it a big ticket thing. Is it under five hundred bucks. Yeah under five hundred. Okay yeah. I don't know exactly how much. But by the time they get you for the the rockers the the two shafts they give you one shaft and put one packs and the gratuities and the boat payments. It's going to be about five hundred bucks. This problem could be intermittent because it doesn't always do it all these things. This happens to us all the time. People up with an elegant. I might say elegant solution. This is a classic problem with rangers in the accept. It isn't an intimate noise. It's going be there all the time. It's didn't do it at all. Just tell me one thing. I just wanna know one thing we you do you see what knew it. Her hearing is going and snowy hears it sometimes a rocker i could be. It could be intermittent but it it. The time that it isn't there we're going to get smaller less and less often few. It's at fewer and fewer fewer and farther between further. Take take it to a dealer. Okay novel idea. See you melody. They'd be the best wants to do this. Okay by one. Eight eight eight car talk or one eight two two seven eight two five five alone. You're on car talk. This is more from hancock..

Employees Start To Feel The Squeeze Of High-Deductible Health Plans

"Planet money has a new newsletter. You should subscribe. We Email you one story a week like do plastic bag bans help or hurt the environment. Subscribe at NPR dot org slash planet money newsletter. That's NPR dot org slash planet money newsletter. One of the ways that companies keep their workers happy and healthy is to offer health insurance. Not everyone who gets coverage through their job, though, is so happy or healthy for that matter deductibles have skyrocketed over the last decade reporter gnome Levy covers healthcare for the Los Angeles Times and through his reporting he found the people with jobs people with health insurance through those jobs are struggling to pay their medical bills asked him to explain what's going on. I mean, we've spent so much time fighting about ObamaCare over the last ten years and talking about the uninsured that I think we lost sight of this quiet revolution. That's happened. With health coverage for the tens of millions of Americans who have coverage through an employer. These are the people who've seen deductibles rise astronomically, right? Four times in the last dozen years from about three hundred and fifty dollars on average to thirteen hundred and fifty dollars on average in some cases, people are seeing four thousand five thousand even six thousand dollar deductibles that they have to pay out of their own pocket before their health insurance kicks in needless to say, many many Americans can't afford those kinds of bills you talked with a lot of people who are living this right now. What did you hear? We heard some really heartbreaking stories. So we did a nationwide poll as part of this project. One of the things that we found was that half of Americans who get job as covered say or an immediate family member. In the last year have put off going to the doctor and not filled the prescription or delayed some other kind of medical care because of concern about cost we found one in five had depleted their savings to pay a medical Bill in the last year and one in six reported that they have had to make some kind of difficult sacrifice. In order to pay medical Bill. And I think those sacrifices are really some of them were really really got wrenching. We had we talked to a seven year old chef in western Virginia. Trying to start a family with his young wife wife had a miscarriage they got such huge medical bills. He had to take two extra jobs and was working from five AM until eleven pm Sundays, and these are people these are people with health insurance, these are people with health insurance. And this used to be something we heard about all the time for people who didn't have health insurance. But in many cases, these are middle class people making seventy five hundred thousand dollars a year. But if they get a five or six thousand dollar medical Bill family of four kids in school. It's hard for a lot of people to come up with that kind of money. You're not done. Right. You're going to keep reporting on this subject. What questions do you don't want to answer? We're going to be looking at how these high deductible plans or exacerbating inequality at a time when this is a major. Issue for Americans about who's getting the gains in our economy. These health insurance plans, they're fine deal. If you're making enough money to put away several thousand dollars a year, and you can cover your medical bills. But if you're living paycheck to paycheck, and you get sick. It's really tough on those group of people. Now, only he is national health care reporter with the Los Angeles Times. Thanks so much for talking with us about your porting. Thank you.

"From the western virginia hills in lexington virginia your book came out at one of our great institutions via my why do they take an urban guy like you and drag you out into the granite halls of i was delighted to be invited i mean you know if if if you worry about the state of values in the united states and then you go to the first military academy that was created in this country the west point of the celts and huge academics and you see that when we are at our best our ability to instill the kind of values that would make us all proud of our young men women is is truly unique in this planet no one else does it the way we do so i was delighted to go and spend a day with them but the reason that the book came out of it is because at the end of the day did a big talk for all the cadets and i was talking about the transpacific partnership this was at the end of the obama administration i was talking to a really needed to do it because otherwise the chinese we're going to be doing the driving and that was a problem for us in this one one student raised his hand and he said well you know with all respect i'm from west virginia and you know we heard these promises about trade before but everything's been closed down there's no opportunities my parents are opposed as my family's opposed to when i go back why should i tell them that they should support the tpp and i said you shouldn't you should oppose it because if we're going to continue to benefit from these deals and not do anything for you right then you should protect this is critical somebody i i'm sorry folks my brain can't get around it right now somebody called the progressive democrats yesterday the brahmin elites the brahmin being.

"Return of george washington seventy and eighty three to seven hundred eighty nine edward larson is the author washington has turned it his commission he's left the service of the united states of america's gone back to mount vernon has lands vast lands all the way to where the ohio river valley he's going to ride them to see if he can sell them to raise money the estate mount vernon five farms is not making money he has about four hundred miles defeat every day he rides west with his doctor and his doctor son also a one of his adopted sons and three slaves and quickly as they proceed into the up the river to western pennsylvania and western virginia independent washington discovers that this land that he planned to sell is not worth very much because they are squatters there are savages and there is been a general land collapse so professor at looks like washington is a very practical minded virginian planter at this point he's looking for a way to balance his books he doesn't want to go back to service of his country but he runs into the fact that unless there is a way of resolving the state lines unless there is a way of defending the frontier this is going to deteriorate is that how you is that how i should read this that is he hears stories of his former agent being scalped and roasted he realizes that this country needs a strong army and a strong executive it certainly is an object lesson of what he had already come to believe that is he saw in the west exactly what was reflected earlier in his circular letter to states that you you've put such emphasis on he went out there he had always viewed his best investments to be in the frontier remember washington wasn't born with money he thought he'd have to work for a living he was the third son son by the second wife of he wasn't going to inherit anything and so he'd worked before the war he learned the trade of being a a surveyor and he'd gone to the frontier to survey land and while out there he'd acquired big chunks and he had been one of the things that leads to the american revolution is that.
