"Or wherever you get your podcasts You're routine lane I'm WTO Senator Manchin had a strong statement And we had a strong statement as well And we're ready to move forward and get this done and work hell to do that That's White House press secretary Jen Psaki this week speaking about senator Joe Manson's declaration over the weekend that he will not support the president's social spending plan Double DT of his Capitol Hill to responded Mitchell Miller is covering Things are very icy right now sake did not totally gloss over the differences with senator Manchin but it's clear The White House is trying to start moving forward She used that phrase work like hell to get it done several times during this news briefing and she indicated the president is still ready to work with mansion despite their differences and despite their disappointment over the declaration he won't support the current legislation Psaki also says The White House will continue to work with Senate majority leader Chuck Schumer and democratic leaders here on the hill in the coming weeks Schumer wants to hold a vote on the $2 trillion plan even though it won't pass to put people on the record But I think everyone from The White House to Democrats are trying to figure out what they can do at this point to salvage this legislation which is supposed to be the president's signature domestic achievement We'll mention The Washington Post is reporting that senator Manchin had made another counter offer related to build back better Do we know what happened with it It's interesting The post reports that senator Manchin was ready to deal though largely on his terms which are much more fiscally conservative than those of other Democrats he reportedly was ready to include a ten year plan for pre kindergarten expanding ObamaCare and funding to address climate change but his proposal did not include extending the child tax credit and that's where the real problem lies That of course expired last week And it's likely that was a non starter for The White House which initially has sought to extend it one year knowing it's very popular with Americans who actually know about that provision as opposed to other provisions But Manchin believes the plan has used a budget gimmick by suggesting that the tax credit won't actually be extended for another decade which he believes is going to happen That alone could add $1.6 trillion to the cost of the nearly $2 trillion plan We'll match there's this thing coming called the midterm elections and of course those are next year What are the political ramifications of the president's plan does not move forward Well as you know this is potentially a huge political issue for the president and congressional Democrats Everyone here knows in Washington that if you don't get a signature domestic plan done in the first year of the presidency it's very difficult for a president to get major legislation passed through an election year Right now a lot of people are worried within the Democratic Party that voters by next year are going to forget the accomplishments of this Congress which is included COVID legislation which was of course early this year but it seems like a lifetime ago there was also the passage of the infrastructure Bill Republicans meanwhile happy to let all of this implode on the Democrats as they wait for those midterms right now the GOP very confident that they can retake the house He capital hill correspondent Mitchell Miller talking with Sean and Khan You are listening to 103.5 FM at WTO P dot com You're with WTF van der
