"Bend and move. So they're they're no spruce by any means i dig that yeah right at one prefers a nas perjury and it grows huge especially especially here on the west coast There are trees that are absolutely massive massive in proportion from thirteen fourteen feet in diameter allegedly tallest tree that ever grew was a douglas for and someone cut it down and then measured that. I think it actually might of broke. And then they cut it down and then they put the two pieces together. And we're like this was the single largest tree anyone's ever measured fan but then they cut it up and no one actually ever officially like said yes in china. You really thing so. It's still one of those things where it's like. Well we had the biggest one and it runs like yes. sure sure. I wouldn't magnificent cut it up. Cut it up irving but yeah so the big thing to tell the parts of the cones and this is the douglas. I specifically Over here in the west they have these little combs maybe about two inches long and they have extended brax that come off of each one of the cone scale in those brax look very very similar to a rats butt so opening thankfully be mouse. The old saying is that there's a forest fire douglas. The mouse was like i gotta get into cover a jumped underneath the the the scales of this little For come and then if you really want to balance it usually the for is like quick. Come in here. i'll protect you. So then the mouse jumped up into the cone scales and then Couldn't quite fit so it's little mouth but two legs in its tail or hanging out. That's how you can tell the douglas firm so if you see a with that kind of cone hanging on it or you see it covering the ground with this really thick big dark brown. Dark grey furrowed bark almost furrow that you could stick your hand in between the the ridges and climb up the tree. That is probably a douglas for nice. Yeah some really good In the field that you don't have to like really stress over. Pull out a hand lens to really pick out. And i gotta say. There's a lot of great cones out there big cone fan over here but douglas firs top three for me for sure and it's really a little mouse butts three because again when you know you're learning plants you're looking for anything you can grab onto to be like. I'm pretty confident about this. And like i said they were planted out here and they get big enough to make cones and it was just one of those that i could grasp onto. I knew what i was looking at. And that charming little story it just connected in my head and it stuck with me ever since so yeah. I got type top three. It's exactly that's such. I love when. I hear these stories because everyone has it. I definitely have one of my old classmates. He learned the scotch pine which is pinal silvestri and the way he remembered it is always said to himself sylvester. Stallone really loves scotch. That's how he put those two things together to remember the names all those little whatever. Little pneumonic works. Help you remember tree or make a connection with it. Just makes my shout shoutout to sandy geffner at university of buffalo. But he's to say the the needles of scotch pine or a little twisted. When you drink scotch you get a little twisted. I always thought that was like look appealed to the union's yeah right. Exactly you gotta do is somehow. That's fun but yeah so you mentioned the bark to being really thick and that brings up something. That's you know. Unfortunately something that's getting worse out west but thick bark and fire. I would assume hand in hand so do douglas. I tend to grow or have evolved in areas that would have historically experienced some level of fire. Maybe not you know. Complete landscape destroying fires but fire on the less. Yeah they definitely did and that is kind of. That's the the the real thing that is fascinating about the douglas. For in my opinion is that not only has it grown and evolved grown adapted to almost every situation you can imagine it does that through different forest succession stages so it is the initial colonizer of burned over area it will just pop back in droves if there is a a whatever kind of disturbance whether that's logging or fire or a hurricane you know whatever it is they'll come back and drove. They'll grow up there shade intolerant species so they will grow up and live Usually when you get those early successional trees. They would die off in some amount of time. These take eight hundred years sometimes. Five to eight hundred year old is the kind of average range for what these trees would be growing. If we let them grow right now we cut them at literally one percent of that too. I guess now i'm sorry. Ten percent of that eighty fifty. Two eighty dollars is though in bar. Yeah real big bummer. So these trees would live that long. And of course you're gonna have some fires that come through at that time on the the far western coast and the west side of the cascades. They just generally don't have a lot of fire..

French sailor wins solo global race after 80 days
"End end tonight tonight to to the the world's world's toughest toughest sailing sailing race race as as the the leading leading boats boats crossed crossed the the line line in in an an unusually unusually close close finish. Solo nonstop race around the world is ending where it began on the western coast of France, 80 days and more than 24,000 miles ago. NPR's Eleanor Beardsley reports. French sailor Sharlee Dahlen was the first to arrive in the port of Lee Sabot alone on France's Atlantic Coast, A Z took his first steps on land and 2.5 months, fans screamed out his name and cameras snapped away. His arrival into the Bay of Gastonia in the Dark was broadcast on the French nightly news and streamed online. Dahlen crossed the finish line in 80 days, six hours, 15 minutes and 47 seconds. And the Robertson, a spokesman for the race, said the 36 year old bombed a Globe rookie clearly has what it takes. I think self reliance is the primary requirement on obviously substantial ocean racing experience, and it tends to be the absolute pinnacle of a solo ocean racers career. The grueling conditions of the race took their toll. Eight skippers were forced to drop out after their yachts were damaged. One sailors boat was split in half during a storm off the Cape of Good Hope, Andy Robertson. It's about avoiding the worst of the big winds with in this race. We've seen 50 to 60 knots at times and used the best of the systems to go fast. This is the most competitive race since the Van Day Glo began in 1989. Nine of the top boats are racing to the finish within 600 miles of each other. They survive. You will see God coming through. It is a castle. Mm, French commentators said the sailors were arriving in a pack as if they'd been out on a little excursion, not 80 days around the planet. Just because Dylan crossed the line first doesn't mean he'll win. Three other skippers close behind him have time bonuses after rescuing that sailor whose boat split in two, so the winner won't be known until their final times are in Eleanor

I don't care what you say Your intention is to intimidate and that it's sick. Plain and simple. It's wrong. And please, God, don't tell me that it's just the left that does this. Don't say that because it's both sides and I'll bring you back a few weeks ago December to jostle invents. Remember her she was the secretary is the secretary of state. From Michigan. You are destroying your own sides Credibility by justifying the other side's accusations against you When you pull this nonsense, why do you keep doing it and and to just to terrorize Children and to terrorize spouses? It is wrong. Wrong. Wrong, right. Let's go to Scotland now. Remember? Remember that song that that I was telling you about Bonnie Tyler? Yes, Every now and then. Well, that is the message from Scottish authorities Rich and everybody listening? Yes. Turn around. That's the message from Scottish parties to President Trump. Dinna Fash, Mr President, your resort there on the Scottish coast way down there on the Western Coast. God, it's beautiful on its just fine. It's totally intact. As far as I know, however, you being there is not fine. There were reports out of the area. I mean, and I don't blame the guy because I was there for a wedding a couple summers ago, and despite the fact that I was Literally fearing for my life at times because I was scared that I was gonna be kicked off the property or like hauled away into some, you know, Turnberry Jail Thanks to my being a never Trumper. We're closed to visitors were even close to the POTUS except for quote, essential purposes. And he says golf is not that all right. Next, let's go to New York City. New York City dwellers are dwelling over the state of the street parking. I don't know if you're listening to this and your New Yorker. But one local woman said. It's like I love this. She says. It's like something out of the hunger games over the past. I mean, whatever. 68 months, people, obviously you've heard about this. They've split. Um the You know, they don't want to be on top of each other during a pandemic. Perhaps they just are so freaking out because crime is skyrocketing. And I'm scared. Even walk. You know, in the afternoon, much less the evening, right? I mean, rich, you come into town. I take the subway to also, do I? Oh, let me tell you, my friend. I mean, I I have a little weapon in my pocket. I'm not going to say what it is because it actually, I think illegal but cops to listen to me. Especially trump like her lovers. But I'm telling you, I have never been concerned walking around the city before, including the daytime. I mean, I don't know about you. Not really. Ever. Yeah, I mean, now it's like but anyway, so all these people that ended up staying put They're staying on public transport. I mean, there's nobody riding the subways. It's not the way it used to be, obviously, so they ended up buying cars because I don't want to be on the subway because they don't wanna get Cove it and those wheels need homes. But not not an expensive, you know, 405 $100 months garages but apparently on the city streets of people are fighting for a sacred spot, and I apparently it's reached a crescendo. "Now, you gotta find him and to get him back on the fact. He's taken Aboriginal artifacts from Australia and ended up in Venice with them know he took Aboriginal or took lessons in Aboriginal culture from a from a guru that appears in the second level. Oh you can recruit. Okay fair enough, but he's in Venice. Yes in Venice and a The situation is a mob boss is polluting the canals of Venice tar and Murray is not able to leave until the Black Water Runs pure. So okay here you gotta clear out that problem and eventually you're able to do that and or is back on the team, but then the team is intrigued by the screw that Marie keeps mentioning and Marie feels bad about breaking off his training. So you go to the Australian Outback and meet the guy. Okay and a whole thing with a bunch of minors there that are digging into the sacred sites and clear them out and there's whole thing with a dark magic Mass. It was kind of one of the more it straight seems sure the whole thing sounds sounds very strange, but that's interesting. I've been to Australia and I met those Miners and I'm sure that the largest hole in the world is in the western coast. It's a dog It's adjacent to a town called kalgoorlie kalgoorlie in Australia and it is it's a gold super pit and it's a goal be fine. But all they do is just remove they're just digging to the Center of the Earth and they and they they pull so much gold out of it every day that it's ridiculous, But I'm sure it was sacred to someone but now it's just a mile crevice into the planet. So that's kind of wild and then so they they go talk to the boss and they they resolve his problems. He then joined the team he joins the team. Yeah Super Gang is never the same again. So then you go on to recruit young people to see like you travel to Holland to compete in a bike lane tournament where you get a mechanic or you recruit a mechanic Fidelity. Okay, that way home. Kind of gets to have a thing. Okay, and then after that you travel to China because you need a demolitions expert and the only and Bentley usually the resident demolitions expert doesn't think his explosives are going to cut it. So the only other option is to go to the source of fireworks giant to go is to go to one of the fiendish five. Oh do do they get back to the one of the fiendish five? Yeah, the level that takes place in China in the first game. The antagonist is the Panda King. Yeah, and he basically said like his whole thing in that game was not only did he kill flies father and take a few these Reckless, but also he extorted local Chinese cities and if they didn't pay up, then he would launch fireworks on to the mountains near their town and Destroy them in an avalanche..

"Getting more more or should anticipate more and more updates to existing guidance as well as new guidance. And I just want to remind people on dismay. Also subtext of in a way of answering your question. Guidance doesn't mean go in the past. We have seen when we put out guidance, and we make it clear that the pace On the protocols related to a scene that guidance applied. That does not mean people should just now rush back to their original form is a relates to kind of activities. We've seen the past even modified activities. We want to caution against that, but we are entering in to the holidays, but also we're entering into a part of the year where things cool down. And people are more likely to Congress back indoors and in settings that put the well put their physical proximity on DH likelihood of transmission transmitting disease at higher risk, and that's why you'll get be seen Mawr in this space over the coming days and weeks. Michaelson box 11. Thank you, Governor. Two quick questions one. Is there a safe way to do any sort of Lakers Championship parade and thank you for giving us a shot at last night on Twitter and too? You know, this isn't all happening in a vacuum, and I'm wondering what you're learning from other states say Disney World is open. Are they having a big outbreak in Florida? What does that teach us about what's happening potentially here in California? Other states are more liberal when it comes to opening Jim's or indoor dining or other things. What are we learning from what other states are doing? It's a good question, and I have a whole team that spends their time not only getting the answer to that question, but asking those same questions. And so this week as a proof point of that. We have supported an effort to actually find out directly by sending our own team to these sites. Eyes relates to theme parks to get a better sense of what's going on. While we absolutely take people's word for information that they provide us. We want to see things for ourselves. And so that's just one example. Of some of the work that we do. We share information, 24 7 back and forth not only between counties and county health officers. But respective team members, particularly this West Coast collaborative that include Our Chiefs of staff are constantly sharing information about what's worked in their states and what hasn't worked in their states. As it relates to guidance as it relates to mandates as it relates to messaging. So that is also a very formal construct that we created again part of that Western Coast Collaborative that we announced a number of months ago. So we're constantly iterating. We're looking for best practices not only across the United States but around the rest of the world. But we are California and we have values and we have an approach and we have a new frame of discipline on and we're going to be stubborn in terms of keeping people's health front and center on balancing all of these commensurate challenges as it relates to getting people back to work and addressing people's isolation and stress. And anxiety getting our kids back and in person learning on incredible importance that we place on all of that at the same time, and so what? That gives you a sense of of the work that is currently being conducted as it relates to the Lakers. Yes, I am in Northern California resident, but I am a Laker fan. I can say that without fear. Of any ambiguity. And if you saw our household last night, my wife I don't think I don't think she'll speak for another three or four or five days. She lost her voice in enthusiasm. After that first quarter on, then things calmed down for her in that second half. A zit appeared that the outcome was now determined. But anyway, I I get off base, You asked more substantive question. And that is, Is there a safe way to have a Have a parade of sorts or celebrate a victory. There is people are practicing what were preaching relates to wearing a face mask and doing the candle, physically distance and aunt to minimize the mixing outside of their key courts. If that's not the case, and we saw some images last night, that is Point of obvious concern as it relates to the transmission of the virus. And so we just ask people to be cautious to be mindful as the same time they celebrate this historic victory on DH and celebrate One of the greatest basketball players that has ever lived. LeBron James Severe belonged to Sacramento. Her over the summer, You asked state agencies and departments to make 5% of their staff available, helpless contact, tracing an updated number in terms of the percentage of state workers who are still helping with contact tracing effort. Yeah, I'll have to do the analysis, and I'll provide that data across the spectrum of hundreds of thousands of employees. But look at your in box and we should have that information to you. Hopefully later this afternoon. I can't imagine that information will take more time than that. McDonald O. C register. Final question. Governor. I had a couple questions about the park. Do you envision separating smaller theme parks from larger theme parks in the upcoming diamonds and second? What will your administration be looking at? During our trip to examine the re opening of the Disney World? Another Florida mark their own experience their own insight. We're trying to get a better handle..

"A severe cyclone has battered India's western coast with strong winds and heavy rains uprooting trees and ripping off roofs in some places but India's most populous city Mumbai badly hit by the corona virus pandemic has escaped the brunt of the storm he certainly my husband telling me more the cyclone Hey it's about a hundred kilometers south of of the the city city in in an an area area and and you you know know I'll I'll be be blogging blogging the the Maharashtra Maharashtra state state the the videos videos that that I've I've seen seen coming coming in in from from there there all all quite quite intense intense I've seen homes that have been damaged up to the uprooted trees some temporary structures you know their roofs being blown off disaster response personnel Austin going in there to assess the extent of the damage I know that nobody networks have been disrupted as well so I you know we've not been able to speak to some people who we was speaking to earlier today who talked about how heavy rains was sort of lashing down they were seeing told coconut trees swaying wildly how old is seeing big waves coming up on the shore and now the city of Mumbai was put on red alert as well but in what will come as a relief to its twenty million residents it does seem to have escaped the worst of the storm we have had bouts of heavy rainfall all through the day and we definitely had strong gusting winds as well trees have been uprooted here there have been some you know temporary homes in areas of the city that have been damaged but you know reports coming in it doesn't look like the damage in the city is Sylvia at so so the city itself makes the eye of the storm but officials were worried about it and moved tens of thousands of people that's right in the tens of thousands of number was actually for people living all along the coast not just terrible by but definitely you know fishermen colonies people living there had been moved out anyone who lives in a sort of a slum or shantytown those to the coast were moved out that even patients who were actually being treated in these newly built tended at field hospitals which were you know rich been billed for covert nineteen that removal by the west affected city in India those people had been moved out to secure them from the cyclone so yes it you know it does come as a relief because this is a densely populated city we had been all stupid path of power outages we've been told to stock up on water as well and of course to stay indoors you need to since you mentioned the corona virus and how how badly Mumbai has been affected just bring us up to date on that Mumbai accounts for about a fifth of India's coronavirus cases for a long period of time it was the public sector hospitals really that were in the forefront of this battle you know it's still extremely hard for someone who needs an I. C. U. for example who needs critical care who needs a ventilator to get one and in fact you know over the past few days I've had several instances where people have died before they could get the care that they needed that was our correspondent you get to the my speaking to us from Mumbai which just missed the on site

Travel to Tainan, Taiwan
"I'd like to welcome the show. Katie Liang who is come to us from Vancouver British Columbia. Come to talk to us about Tynan. In the country of Taiwan Katie is from photo spire D- Dot Com. She is a blogger there and we'll put a link to that in the show notes and now katy welcome to the show. Thanks for having amy. So what's your connection. I with Taiwan so I was actually born and raised in Taipei Taiwan which is the capital city of Taiwan. I moved to Canada when I was eleven years old. And I've been back and forth in between the two actually look in Taiwan for four years after graduating university and I just recently moved back to Vancouver have but I will go back to Taiwan again in the next few months or so you have two homes is really what you're telling us. Essentially I cannot sort of home because my family's here and my cats is here. I think spiritually I really really Miss Taiwan and I think I think that's where I really feel at home. Excellent will in. Why should someone go to this? Part of Taiwan. We've talked about Taiwan the show three times before I think this is an area we have dealt with. Why should we go to China so I want to talk about ten specifically because I really enjoy going in there so it can be the short weekend trip for me? But I've been there numerous times and each time so much to discover and I think the essence assists me about the warmth the people there and history and culture can find there and we're in the southern part of the island on the western coast of Taiwan so the opposite end of the airline pretty much from Taipei. I guess you could say that. It's about four hours drive from Taipei. But if you take the high speed rail it's only two and a half hours. What should we do in China? What itinerary recommend for US Tannen on is really about the street food so the first thing going to try is definitely to find some Thomas Breakfast so breakfast is essentially things psych? Mike Soya milk so if you find a place where they make fresh soya milk it can really taste of roast. You can also find things. I Chinese donuts and counting style armlet so those are really excellent. They don't want to donate is. I don't know what a Chinese style Avocados got pastry. And then the egg on top and you can flavor with sway sauce and I think they usually ask some corn or pork floss but it depends John. What can flavor you want? It's a really good start today because you have so many different things. Is there a particular region of the city street or or vendor. You would send us to for street food street. Food obviously changes sometime. Yeah so actually confined to bacchus everywhere throughout Ireland. Four China China is especially they have very unique. Take on breakfast so they like to eat. Things are really heavy for breakfast so you might find. Do things like Taro cake for breakfast or shrimp meatballs for breakfast. So those things are a bit more heavy but down really very flavorful. They really give you the energy for the rest of the day. We'll let me let me pin you down a little bit here so I arrived. Let's say by train high speed rail. I get out of the train station. Should I hit the very first vendor. I find or is there particular direction. I should head to find the best street food. So if you get up to high speed rail you won't be in town and city centres. It's actually. It's actually quite a drive from city centre so you can take a shuttle or hop on the regional train and get there here in maybe ten or so and since the descend to attend find much more options so once I've been city centre. They're we're all over the place. I would start my search the Tannen train station. So there's lots of streets and lots of street vendors there and I'm sure any one of them will be really good next okay so after breakfast you'll probably to explore a bit more so I recommend the streetcars Gosh Shannon's street. What's unique about the streets? It was once one of the busiest streets in China because of trade the town I used to be really famous canals and waterways. That was how people got around in days overtime. Dock became less popular and the street fell under repair now all the government has really revived it. And now it's become a cultural hub of so you can find this stroz cafes frosts and lots of things to do that's a good place to check out the street one more time Hsien no streets so it's spelled S. H. E. N. N. O. N. G. But one thing had to be careful of that has to have a lot of different crafts and handmade stuff there so most of the vendors don't want you to take photos yeah you you can take photos of the streets for not of the products are selling in. What kind of products am I going to see it? Sh- street very unique seven years. I I can take home because I find that if you go to a souvenir store general you find the same stuff. All throughout the island are Chanel. Street can find glow pouches. You can use for coins and there's also traditional closing got it. This is when you say street. This is more like an alley. Yeah exactly so if you look on Google maps is actually really short. Okay Yeah so is you are for you probably we're too. I think it's a good time to cool down because hands generally very warm authored a year. So you might want to go and in have some shaved ice and so one place. I recommend as Code Eugen. It's spelled Y O U C h e the N. G. so very famous for the mango shift is and that's usually during the summer months. That's when the mangoes are in season and the most suites and so you have to order the mango shaved ice. If you go there during the summer so it's better to order strawberries in the winter because that's when strawberries we saw in season then after chastise onto more food because this is really just food brings allow memories of place and I really liked to discover food cities to food. I find out fascinating because of that after that I recommend for land she can go to do south for the Dandy Noodle Noodle is also unique Tatan it's actually become uh-huh so famous that it's the number one search word fourteen. Okay Okay and so. There's a story behind it so it used used to be that fishermen in town then they would have a few months of rough season. Were unable to go out to see and so this guy who he wants to to survive over the few months so he started selling noodles at Temple Square and because he was carrying the noodles over like a shoulder pole as he named her Danzon. Nudo for that. You're sorry you by Chinese is not as good as here's the meaning of the word is Dan's I is our knees for the shoulder. Polls OCHRE got it. You'll find actually several locations for Danzon. You'd in China and all claim to be the original and I'm not quite sure which is actually the original but the one I went is actually actually the most humble looking I should say and this right across from chicken tower. which is the most famous landmark container? So it should be it'll find Quite easily and it's very good snack food for lunch or for any time of the day actually okay and you see ah the Tower Chicano Tower C H I H K an correct. Yeah so that brings onto the next eighteen points. It's of interest to check out the tower because it is mostly landmark in China and lots of stories and legends behind a plays You'll find out. There's nine turtle looking statues placed throughout the compound. Yeah they symbolize strength because they carried tower which is interesting. There's also this myth. That's there was like a tunnel dot com next tower to another nearby forts switch. I'll talk about later. There were used by the Dutch in earlier days. The two towers are connected to the Dutch so the Dutch they had a colony colony here in town trading city. Yes was one of the early years establishments in Taiwan and so the Dutch came around around sixteen hundreds and they built a fort called. Well we call it today on PM sports and then lead it. Also builds Chicano she can tower and a bunch of other landmarks and Tannen and so a lot of architecture. Here is really inspired by that area. Time not that. This tower looks Dutch. So yeah she kantar actually does now look Dutch because being through several changes and so now it looks more Chinese after that I would recommend checking out the other folks I was talking about. which is this is a bit on the outskirts of town? You'll likely get due to afford by the streets so the old St is another interesting place at checkout. Because has the many street vendors for drinks and snacks and dessert. You might find things like Tofu. Pudding desserts my find things like the voice Oyster omelets which is famous in Taiwan. The Ford has so much history. You can find a remains the original wall on account pound literally a wall right next to you this memorial hall. That explains the history behind a consider photos and can see the artifacts remaining take time
