Just be careful. Driving through KCRW traffic is brought to you by the Goetzman group finance and accounting professionals. It's all things considered from NPR News. I'm Mary Louise Kelly and I'm Elsa Chang. President. Biden says he is willing to negotiate, and that is just what he's been trying to do this afternoon in a meeting with some of the top Republicans and Democrats, who are key to passing his $2 trillion infrastructure plan. This meeting comes as Senate Minority leader Mitch McConnell says Republicans are disinclined to support the plan. In its current form. Democratic Senator Maria Cantwell of Washington state chairs the Senate Commerce Committee. She was in the meeting today at the White House and joins us now welcome. Welcome. Thank you so much. Thank you for being here. So you have said yourself that there is room for bipartisan negotiation here. Is that what it actually felt like inside the Oval Office. This remembers on both sides that were there today. First of all, the over office is a great place to have a meeting right? Because everybody comes together with the president, the vice president. And everybody talked about how infrastructure was critical to America's competitiveness. They all had examples, and they talked about historically how the Senate the House had come together on infrastructure investment in the past, so traditionally, it has been bipartisan. Okay, well, President Biden does say he's willing to negotiate. Did he talk about specifically what he is willing to give on? Did he say anything about that today? Well, I think the president was clear that he wanted to hear from people. He asked him. If there were things on the list that they didn't you know, want to consider his infrastructure. Nobody really focused on that. Mostly people focused on The aspect of infrastructure that really do affect their own states, which I think is important, you know and understand when putting a package together. But also, the president said he's willing to have his team come up to the hill meet with individual senators meet with people who were in that room. To continue to shape out these discussions, and I thought that was, you know a serious offer to see where we can go from here. So it there were there were people there that looked like they wanted to take the president up on that, and we'll see what happens after today. Okay, That sounds good in theory, but let's talk about some of the specific points at play here. Let's talk about paying for this proposal. The current package is going to cause $2 trillion. The president is proposing to pay for it with a corporate tax hike. Do you think he's going to cut the overall cost the plan or do you think he's open to other ways to pay for it? Did he say anything on that front today? Well, I think the key thing is like the previous covert package. In the sense that the president feels that this needs to be a significant investment that America needs to make so it can remain competitive. He doesn't want to see him America in a decline on infrastructure that effects Farmers and manufacturers and their ability to make products and get it to its destination so he doesn't want a small package. He wants a major package and I think that was his main contention from the meeting is that the previous covert back A. Tribble said They wanted to negotiate but really wanted to do. About a third were, you know somewhere between the third and half of what he want to do, so I think the president is saying this has to be a significant investment that these long term problems in a you know, transportation rail. You know, competitiveness, the various issues in the marketplace as it relates to the supply chain in America being competitive, like the earlier meeting he had today on Ah on on high tech chips and various things. I think he thinks these air really truly about growing jobs in the future. But what about pain for the plan? What about this corporate tax hike idea? I mean, it's not just Republicans expressing reservations about that Joe Manchin of West Virginia and moderate Democrat he needs to buy into this too, right? So right, and he's expressed reservations about the corporate tax hike. So do you think President Biden is open? Teofilo another way to pay for this plan? I think the president is open to a discussion about what? What the Senate or house is willing to Diogo. I think the president has heard, though. From corporations of people like Jeff Bezos, who are like Yep, I'm ready to go. No, I think I think the president's hearing from some of those individuals and thinking I'm hearing a lot of support for this. They think it's worth the investment. But he said, I'm willing to listen to my Senate colleagues from the past of hear what they have to say, and I'm willing to send my team up to the hill to listen. That is democratic Senator Maria Cantwell of Washington State. Thank you very much for joining us today, Senator. Thank you. In a surprising when Ecuador has elected a conservative banker as its next president. His name is Guillermo lost. So then he won and a runoff election against the left wing candidate. That was economist undress sorrows who was widely expected to win well here to tell us why. And why it matters is theater. Rio Franco's She teaches Latin American politics at Providence College. Welcome. Thank you so much for having me tell us more about the man who won. I said he is a banker. What else do we need to know? He's a banker. He's a millionaire. He served for many years as the president of Banco Quiet he'll one of Ecuador's largest private banks. Um, he also has been found to have hidden a lot of his wealth and offshore tax havens and the evaded domestic taxation. It's also worth noting that this is the third time running for president. I guess their time is the charm. The other two times didn't work and that his platform and past or promise to return To the pro free market and private investment policies that had prevailed in Ecuador for for decades. And do we know what the key factor was? Was there a key factor? You said he's run three times before, and the other guy was expected to win. Ecuador had one of the first and most severe cove it outbreaks in Latin America. Ondas suffered from that and from from the economic crisis related to that, and so this is a moment of social and economic and political up people, and I think that can make politics less predictable. The other two things out mention is that oftentimes second round of elections and run off electoral system produced surprising results because the voters of candidates 23 and four might all disliked candidate one for various reasons. Right and about was the left wing candidate was the one that won the most votes in the first round. But voters of both right and of the indigenous party candidate you know, may have disliked him for various reasons right so often time second round's produce surprising coalitions, and sometimes the second place person comes out. On top on by. I think the third thing that I would mention which I alluded to is that there's been a deep and now almost decade long live among leftists and progressive that resulted in it being challenging for left wing government to come to power. I know it's hard to speak for what a whole nation might be watching for, but Our people in Ecuador, hopeful that their lives make it better in the coming year and under this president You know, I don't think I would describe the main feeling or vibe in Ecuador is hope. I think there's tremendous discontent. There's a lot of division including among people with in some senses. Some similar political viewpoints like I mentioned among progressives on the left. I would say that Ecuadorians are discontent are scared about the economic situation, but continued health situation, the possibilities for getting equitable access to a vaccine and the mounting debt that puts a lot of pressure on on the fiscal resources of the government. That is theory Real Franco's professor at Providence College, talking about the election results over the weekend in Ecuador. Thank you. Thanks.

"Now, before we get back to what's happening at the moment. Dave yesterday on my trip home. I heard about the accident and Irving Park heading north. Because I listen to WGN and I got off the expressway because it was moving. And so I kind of worked my way up through some Streets to get to pick up the expressway again north of Irving Park. And when I got back on the expressway north of Hurry, I think I got back on a two ego in north I realized I made a mistake. I should have stayed on. Western Avenue or Lincoln or Ashley or some other street Because the expressway was even worse at that hour, which was about you know, 11 in the morning yesterday. Is that what you found? Well, I think I did. I stayed on the expressway. I didn't see the accident and I don't know that it hadn't been cleared. By that point. It was just there were so much snow on the expressway. That one was crawling along six miles an hour. What my speedometer said, and going up towards Foster Avenue on the Edens, where it sort of slopes uphill a little bit. There was some semis that we're really having trouble. Getting any traction about that hill. So everything was slowing down. And then I think in general, people felt unsteady on the roads, So everybody slow down with good reason. Because You were sliding around a little bit, so it just It just seemed endless. That's what's happening right now. Yeah, Finally, the plows. And if I hadn't been in back of a bigger truck, I don't think I would have made it in. Yeah, The surprise for you this morning is The main roads. The expressways don't count on them being very clear. That's the movie race speed. Yes. Speed exactly Keanu Reeves classic. What a great film that. Was. That was a good movie. Oh, man, and he was on the crawler the mechanics underneath and all he dropped her down onto soul intense. Yeah. Sandra? Bullock, right, Sandra. Breakout role for looking fantastic, and like a summary kind of funny sort of dress. He was yeah. Yeah. Summer dress. And she she had Zona Wildcats sweatshirt, but she draped it over the back once she took over driving the bus for the bus driver because he got shot by the guy that thought that Keanu Reeves had boarded the bus to arrest. Any? This hopper. Okay. Can you feel that those a lesser moving disappointed arena didn't sign on for it? So they brought him Jason Patric and then it's on a boat. And so the star is Sandra Bullock, but Jason Patric. On the bottom of a boat colleges. Didn't it does it say. Keanu Reeves just for a moment. Let's reflect on him. He's been a mega movie star for four decades. I want to hear about you in in the bus under the John wick those moves the underpass western so I'm going under the under out. There was just heading north on the bus. Okay. From where to where there's year year-old place that I really like unwesternized big boy euros in a car owner, and you're going to take the bus to get a year old. The guy on the bus eating a year. I'm not afraid, man. I was taking the train, and I get on there and be some some due to crack open the Chinese from the Chinese place in Union Station that doesn't even bother to change the sign from the when it was a Cajun place. Yeah. Ten years later. It. But I'm telling you these zero I know that all of your favorite euro spots in the loop of closed down, Steve. But if you're willing to head up north these might be the best euros on the north side, at least big boy euros western medicine is by that high school that Jennifer knows maybe you went there are used to hang out in that area over by WGN studios. Now, I didn't hang over there. Yeah. Gordon, you familiar with that area? Right. Yeah. I think the subway places over there to the sandwiches. All right. Subway. It's a it's a sandwich place little independent submarine shop, but kitty corner from that is big boy euros, and it's just a quality year. I'll bring you one sometime familiar with have eaten there. But I have seen it friendly guy. Always think to myself. I bet there's a good year. But, unfortunately, I'm on my way to work or whatever or at six in the morning because I was just on WGN. Right. And it doesn't seem like the right time. I have a euro a friendly chip behind the in Illo job on the cheese cheese for group. No when they cut when they cut the the hero, meet off do they put it in that little scoop, and then put it on the flat top Crispin up a little bit because you know. I mean, they they cut it into the scoop at a good place. They put the meat on the flat top with a spatula kind of Crispin a little only speak to that. Myself super hungry. Let's get some euros. No. That's not a good on your travel. Well, no, it's not a good on air food. It's a chicken nap food above the bus. It'll be begging for. They feel like they do Chris. But but I can't tell it's a high counter and the guy back there is doing his magic. Okay. I'm not sure. But I think so I mean, yeah. If it's a legit euro place, they Crispin up a little bit the mama with their to get this grid euro. And I'm I see a sign held by a man out in the middle of the street. He's standing there and it says. Free smiles and he's smiling and. Thought to myself. Wow. What a nice message in dreary world and the buses you hit the emergency. A hug this guy. I found myself smiling, and I saw the people on the bus smiling, including the driver. She wasn't the he needed the wanted some cash. Yeah. Wasn't altruistic. Was it really free? I guess what is I guess it was to you. Cheapskates or the bus? Going to drop ten bucks on a euro starving to death. Westwood back. I guess loaded dice would I forgot all about them by the time. It's too rich. What if you're homeless regularly? That's to Rachel dive right into. Piece of pita bread or something that catch them off guard. Yeah, I know your favorite poise CND euros that used to be right down here in this area. Streeter Ville within two blocks where we are used to send me their back in the day. When I was a spy was a sandwich fetter sandwich. Flunky? Yeah. I would run there and get get zeros. And then back when I was disappeared on air food on air. Right. I suffer the consequences for it. I'd get the meat sweats. I'd get super mean, I don't know if you've ever noticed that. I did. Mean to work my way out of it. Right. Mentally handcuffed myself on the euro. Yeah. The show and then eat I can do. Okay. Something right at the beginning. Sometimes it would be a two pm euro, let's get around the station. Steer clear. Bad news. What good euros? Oh, yeah. Fantastic. Euros an old old timey street or will forever. It was there. I when I recorded do you think I'm disco, right? Next door all at St. of real studios. It was there, man. That's how I discovered it. That's nice during the sash. Five. During his session show. You have to. Let's take a Greek five stretch the legs. Yeah. So he's seventy nine now. It's been gone for five maybe ten years. This is some high-rise now. Oh, man progress. Right. But at what price. I don't know a smile don't. Where does it man? Get a decent year around here. I don't know. I don't even care. Syria was almost killed by my sandwich. I'm afraid I you know, I don't even know what to do for lunch today. Ordered anything yet. No, no. Because of my sandwich. As I said earlier, I call Brennan oversee look at this meet is it, do you think is okay. It's a little discolored. But I think it's fine. Little discolored. Like, I an acceptable range either give you ill colored said, which is gray and pink. It looked like a a grandmother's genitals. Precisely..
