"To 12 learning. More at and Utopia daughter work. edition from NPR News on Lulu Garcia Navarro. The school year is almost over, but not quite. And with new guidelines from the CDC earlier this month, some districts are changing. Their mask policies in Utah Governor Spencer Cox lifted all masked mandates within schools for the last week of the year. That's coming up very soon. Stephanie Gonzalez teaches fifth grade in West Valley City, Utah, and she joins us now. Hello, Ty. What do you teach? I teach fifth grade. The best grade the best grade. Tell me why Why is it a good grade? Oh, it's just so fun. They just they start to get sarcasm there figuring out who they are. I just love their little personalities before we get to masks. I mean, it is obviously been a very challenging year for teachers to say the least. How do you feel about it Coming to an end? It's bittersweet. It spend the most challenging year of my career. But it's been such a unique opportunity. And I've been teaching dual modalities. I've been teaching online at the same time that I'm teaching my kids in the class. So I have a special bond with all of my kids this year, like a bond that I'm probably never gonna have with another class. Just because of the circumstances. Yeah, roomies and zooming. Yeah, Let's talk about this big change in policy because it's happening just at the very last minute. Tha students you teacher too young to be vaccinated yet. So what's your reaction to that news? It makes me very conflicted as a teacher, because I can be vaccinated. I am vaccinated and my kids don't have that choice right now. And so making masks. Optional is really ah, hard pill to swallow. At this point in the school year, we've made it. Through, you know, 10 months of masks everything following CDC guidelines very strictly, And then now, all of the sudden it's okay to take them off. And so it's very conflicting. What's been their reaction to the news because I know my daughter. You know, she's in second grade. And boy, does she want to take that mask off? Yeah, I've got a mixed reaction in my classroom. I've got kids that are ready to take it off and be done with it. And having this news come Two weeks before we can do. It is actually kind of making it harder for those kids because they know that the end is in sight. And then I've got kids that you know they live in multigenerational homes, and they're still worried about picking it up and transmitting it to their grand parents and so as much as they want to take it off the in fifth grade there kind of thinking about the bigger picture. I mean, do you find it a little strange that this new policy is basically only for the last few final days left in the school year. And what was the thinking? Do you think behind doing it at that time? So the thinking from Spencer Cox is point of view was that it will allow the kids some closure to the school year that will all be able to see each other's faces, and they can finally see you know my smile and reactions to things. I think it's very odd that we're doing it and the end of the school year, so we'll have three school days with the optional masks. And so that's another conflicting thing is that it hasn't been okay to take our masks off the whole year. And we've made it through the challenge. We've done it, and here we are just the last three days of school that suddenly it's going to be okay. So that's another kind of hard thing for the kids to understand of. Why suddenly it's okay. Something that you said at the beginning of this really struck me that this is, um You'll never have another relationship with your students because of everything you've been through, and I'm wondering what your message will be to them on that last day of class. My message is going to be that They have really good heads on their shoulders. And no matter what life throws no matter what the future holds, they're going to make the best choices because they have learned to really think beyond themselves this year, and that makes me very proud. Stephanie Gonzalez, fifth grade teacher from West Valley City, Utah. Thank you very much, and congratulations on finishing this school year. My pleasure. Thank you so much. Yeah..

So who is the media? Really? Four? That's the question that Sarah Jones explores in her essay for New York magazine. She's a writer there and she joins me now welcome. Hi. Thank you for having me. Let's recap these two stories and and start with Chris Cuomo. What was the reporting on that? What did he do? So. This is her voice maybe organize and make dinner. Maybe Susan's husband. Josh was the prime suspect in her death he recorded audio journals and even went so far as saving. Susan's voice means. I'm not as could a person rather depressed. Ludi irritable when I get away from things that I know are right while under the eyes of detectives. Josh Josh took the two sons in Susan shared to Washington state you eventually killed himself and the boys there by setting fire to his rented home. The worker the deals with this resident. They believe that the fire was intentionally set out the open door. The kids were one step ahead of the in the dorm. I say this was the first visit Josh. It had with the boys since Wednesday's custody hearing in which he learned he would not be getting his sons back. My name is Dave colleague Ali. I have worked as a journalist in Salt Lake City Utah for more than fifteen years. In that time I've covered a lot of stories and seen some pretty crazy things but no story has stuck with me more than that of Susan Powell. About three years ago I presented my news director at KSL in Salt Lake City with a proposition. Why don't we do our own investigation of Susan's disappearance? There's so many unanswered questions. Such what appears to be highly suspicious behavior from Josh. I submitted new public records requests obtaining more than three thousand never before released files from computers that belonged to Josh and his father. Steve and now she knows she could've missed it. He's not either. I know we got thousands upon thousands of pages of documents. Police reports witness interviews. Social worker knows psychological evaluations emails journals and on and on what might we learn from all of that about out Josh about how his mind worked or about the rumors that had gone around claiming he'd spent time with strippers had a secret mistress. He's a sex addict. You know that right. And what about talk of Susan having planned to divorce him he has the first thing I said Susan leave. You need to just leave. How about a motive? You just didn't want to have to deal with an ax. You wanted to have control of everything. We're what if as Joshua's family suggested. Susan simply ran away. It was never able able to confirm that she had attempted to get a passport. Let alone had a passport. Could we find any clues about where she might be or rule out where she's not. There could have been something in there here that we wouldn't have seen or discovered because it was remote or in the bottom of the shaft. I went in depth with the now retired detective. Who led the investigation? It was a series theory that he poisoned or sedated. Susan I also tracked down people who've never publicly shared their stories some not even with the police police have easily step forward and been like. Hey you know but I didn't want it to be about me in needed to be about Susan that Katherine Her story is absolutely while I didn't even really think about it until we were talking and I was like wow in this podcast. We're going to go through the case together. We will hear Susan in her own. Words describe her crumbling marriage. Everything works out and we're all happy and happily ever after as much as possible. We'll retrace traced the route of Josh's unlikely winter camping trip the night his wife disappeared. That's truce. He wanted us to verify that he was out there. We'll hear Steve Powell describe a disturbing disturbing obsession with his own daughter in law and how she reacted to it married the daughter we'll glimpsed glimpse the horrors. Police found in Steve's home as they closed in on Josh. We know or Josh got it from his. That is one messed up dude. This is all really heavy. But amid the terrible darkness we will also see how people tied to the case have used their experiences to create like the only viable reason for doing it from now on is to let people know about the dangerous signs that were there there have been people that have contacted us and said because of her story I recognize the signs and I got out before I ended up like her NYC. Hurry he may feel very very very trapped. You may feel like there's another way and you might be a very scary situation but people are willing to help and there are ways to get. I mean welcome you to your couch as well. Those are uptaking. Everything's real hair Eddie. Everything's real pleasure to be here on your podcast is world renown and I'm just a little guy in the pawn with my own podcast. Nothing compared to this although and I think I shared this on the episode for you. You were a big deal. I reached out to you and you're very kind and made time for me but even when we got on the phone you kind of said so like what's what do you WanNa talk about and I was. I didn't really know what I wanted to talk about but I was trying to pitch my services to come. Share my message on your podcast and thank goodness. She didn't take me up on it at the time because I I would have been a mess so well. Now you would've been fine but you have been on my podcast and it's it's a was downloaded like crazy and we had a great discussion because we you know the audience I speak to our lay leaders in the Church of Jesus Christ latter-day Saints who are striving in to help individuals who are either struggling with mental illness or addiction. Jenner all these different reason we focus on one aspect of addiction and people loved it and it's great CPAC so it'd be worth having furthering that conversation on your gas right right and I would love to and here's my being super honest I mean I am on that page page right now leading saints Dot Org and if you go to the podcast page you've got all these super famous people and their pitchers featuring guests yes such as and adds a lot of people and then you go down and it says most listened to podcasts and there's the one that we did together so and not really I mean I know I'm sounding like a EGOMANIAC with that but I really was grateful to have a platform we talked about trying to remove shame mm-hmm basically out of the office of bishops and in how that help addicts and and I don't think you and I have spoken since then but I literally received a a hundred plus e mails from all kinds of leaders people who have heard the podcast and just talked about how that's really helped them in their struggles with addiction so again. I really am grateful that you gave me that platform so I appreciate that yeah well. It's crucial because I've been this. This leader who who I was called as a bishop at Twenty eight with my degree in marketing so that was worthless in that context and I face these difficult situations. Sion's were individuals are desperate for help and of course we you know no no leader. No bishop wants to be the therapist unless they are a therapist so yeah I it's just good know some of these general red flags to look for or you know when not to you'll never go wrong with referring get out to therapists like yourself but these are tough situation so that's why appreciate listening to the virtual couch so much certa brings me into that into that counselor therapist's arena to hear some of these dynamics wouldn't even considered without you. Bring voice to them so hopefully we can. We can talk about that. I know that's one of the things I want to address. Today's you've got it. Sir Liberating Saints Virtual Summit and you've done some things maybe before we do that gives me the it doesn't have to be an elevator pitch with me. Give me a couple of minutes on just about you. I know you live in Utah. I know you enjoy drawing characters so you know I I know that Allen you've been doing the the podcast along in the website so let's hear about curt short so I was born and raised in a new topper hillary particularly in West Valley City Utah which is just the West just west of Salt Lake City and I went on a mission to Sacramento California so we both have a special place in our art for the area where you live just like I said like in our church obviously if those if there's anybody listening to not familiar like it's all late ministry so nobody the applies for these jobs to be a bishop or released sunny president or be a leader and I found myself at twenty eight years old being as a leader and later served in a stake presidency and during this time I thought like nobody is really speaking to best practices of leadership like how to run a meeting or an addict how to just most simple things of just how to lead and so I wasn't an expert of leadership but I knew I could maybe create a platform to bring the expert spurts since so I created leading saints nonprofit we have a podcast we have online articles and it's just a platform where individuals can come to either learn about leadership to share their perspective about leadership all in the context of of being Latter Day saints and leading in that world. Oh exhibits them right yeah. No it's perfect and I feel like the fact you're not afraid to have difficult conversations or guests that maybe have a variety of opinions and so I am curious. What's that been like I mean. Did you get a lot of feedback of of why you have certain guests on or yet well. The way I look at is I noticed when I was a bishop like I didn't get to dictate a what issue was gonNA in a show up on my on my schedule for that evening. Just there is a name on my schedule that person will walk in and within the first two minutes they would then lay a a problem or an issue or a question before me and I had to respond to that so I always try and have the most difficult conversation. Even about sensitive subjects likes you know. Pornography addiction yet has at some point. The leader has to have that conversation anyway so I'd rather create a platform or conversations. Where are these individuals can already hear some points or perspective so the win that individuals walks in there are at least somewhat aware of you know the the topic in general so that they have response and they're not just you know caught up in their words and I don't know what to say or they default to scripture that it doesn't help or are they just throw the you know just pray and Regis scriptures and that does help in all circumstances so that's the way I look at. That's and that's why I I loved about the episode we did was even just telling bishop that when somebody comes into their office and they may be struggling with pornography diction of just tell them thank you for coming in. I mean you know I got more feedback on just that than I anticipated where people just WanNa know that okay so I don't have to tell them or do you know how bad this is. Do you realize what this can and lead to because hey guess what the ex he's been feeling that way for a long time so just have somebody and this position of authority say thank. You and I'm grateful for your here I was this is shocked at how many people responded and said that I'm I'm grateful that that's that's a good thing. That's okay yeah. That's awesome to hear because it's so easy for leader to see like when that person walks in the office like it's easier for them to assume will we're at step one here but that individuals on step one thousand and they'd been already wrestling with this the point they get to an awfully they get to that point where they feel comfortable enough to to see it in either a trusted mentor religious leader their bishop. What a great. I mean that that's I love those practical. Things that that we get from from you and your and your podcast is just that you know. Why don't you just first or start out with with thanking them for coming in 'cause that's a tough decision wasn't tough for the Bishop decided to go to the church that night for that individual they they may have been sitting in the parking a lot for forty five minutes before they got up the the guts to walk in there absolutely hey so and and tell me more about this deliberating saints virtual summit. I mean I know we wanted kind of. Let's kick around some things that you're thinking about in talking through yeah because I have a list of questions. I'm going to pick your brain ears as we go through this but the liberating saints virtual summit l. came from just again this idea that

They do it all the time <hes> when the cop asks josh gosh were susan was. He said that she should be at work. Ellis told him that she was not at work that he needed to come down to the station. Asep meanwhile susan's friends were desperately trying to get a hold of her and find out where she was her friend. Q._c. called another friend giovanna who stated that she was with them the previous night. She said that josh was making dinner for them. Pancakes specifically for them while they were hanging out and talking talking in another room at the police station. Josh's being interviewed with his sons in the room and the detectives he stays at the last time he saw his wife was around around midnight the night before at home right before he left to go camping. She then went to bed win question about why he would take his boys camping hang on a sunday night when he had worked the next day. He said he forgot it was sunday even though there.

"Josh Powell loaded his sons, Charlie and Brayden into their car seats on Saturday, December nineteenth of two thousand and nine. He was leaving west valley City Utah for his dad's house on the outskirts of Puyallup, Washington, his wife Susan had been missing for twelve days. LS Maxwell west valley city's lead detective on the case was powerless to keep joshing Utah. It was frustrating at the most because. Is a crime ever investigating here. And. The individuals that were really focusing on is now leaving the state and going twelve hours away on Christmas Eve and Christmas day. Josh dropped the boys with Susan's parents each time. He refused to even set foot inside his in laws home Susan's, dad. Chuck Cox had suspected from the beginning. The Josh was responsible for his daughter's disappearance say for other than what did you do? You creep. You know, you'd better get her. You'd better find fighter shows where she is. Free her from wherever you have stashed or whatever he done between Christmas and New Year's west valley. Police learned about Joshua's request to withdraw Susan's retirement using the power of attorney. She had signed earlier that year. They couldn't stop the distribution. The paperwork was airtight. But the start of the new year Ellis learned Josh did not intend to come back. He was moving away from west valley permanently. It was surprising to us. But it wasn't. Remember police had been keeping close tabs on Josh's movements, including using a GPS tracker Rozan we're following him or doing everything that we can to see if we pick up on any cues, and he'll kind of. Screw up somewhere. He'll be like. Okay there. It is. Or you know and build a locator word of Josh's arrival spread quickly among the community. In Puyallup, didn't take long for Josh to kind of ruffled the waters up there. And you know, when people start learning that he was in the area and the kids were coming to church or whatnot. You know, it caused some concern and rightfully so because I think everybody wanted to see an end in this investigation. Probably want to see him sitting in jail. And then obviously Susan to be found..
