A highlight from Brain Science in Elders Quorum | An Interview with CK Bray

"Have you ever heard of scrupulosity? This is a mental health concern that is impacting more Latter -day Saints than you think. Scrupulosity is religious, obsessive -compulsive disorder, where individuals are hyper -obsessed about their worthiness and repentance. Sam Baxter, a former bishop, sat down with me to talk about his lifelong struggle with scrupulosity and how he got treatment. You can watch this interview for free in the Mentally Healthy Saints library by going to www .leadingsaints .org slash 14. This gets you 14 days free access to Sam Baxter's interview about scrupulosity and 25 plus other interviews about ministering to those who struggle with mental health. The content is priceless for leaders, so visit leading saints dot org slash 14 for free access. All right, let's go around the room, do some introductions. I'll start. So my name is Kurt Frankham. I am the executive director of Leading Saints, which is a 501C3 nonprofit organization, and we are dedicated, you know, have a mission here to help Latter -day Saints be better prepared to lead. Now, me personally, I live in Stansbury Park, Utah, which is in Tooele County. I grew up in West Valley City and have been running Leading Saints really since 2010 when it started out as a hobby blog. 2014 is when the podcast started, and now we are over 10 million downloads. And, man, we're glad that you are now one of those downloads. Let's jump in. Hey, a big shout out to Michael Plowman in Gilbert, Arizona. He's been helping me line up some phenomenal guests as of late and, you know, that's all it takes. A simple email from time to time, and I get a lot, but be patient with me, and if you submit a recommendation of maybe someone I could interview or talk to here on the Leading Saints podcast, you might be surprised when they just pop up on the podcast feed. And today, thanks to Michael Plowman, he connected me with Dr. C .K. Bray. We call him Chris Bray here at Leading Saints, and he also lives in Gilbert, Arizona. A phenomenal individual. He's been Eldersport President three times. Also his day job is he researches the brain and helps organizations better understand what's going on in our skull to simulate better culture and all that good stuff. I might as well just read his bio here on his website. It says, Dr. Bray is a cognitive behavioral researcher. He specializes in change, adaption, human performance, and potential, and their impact on organizations and individuals. He bridges the gap between science, research, and organizations, and is known for his ability to take complex research and make it understandable and applicable to clients. He does the same thing for Latter -day Saints in this episode. He has a PhD in organizational development and learning, a second PhD in industrial organizational psychology with an emphasis in the cognitive sciences. So it's such a blessing to have Chris Bray on the podcast. He has his own podcast as well that I will link to in the show notes called The Dr. C .K. Bray Show. There are 20 -minute episodes that just help you learn all the brain science and help you succeed in life and in your career or whatnot, and obviously it's very applicable to church stuff and leading in the church. So it was fun to sit down with him on this episode, listen to the... He talks about how do you stimulate change in an organization? Like what does that even look like? And how can a church leader approach their organization, their calling, in a way of stimulating change? Because really that's at the essence of what the gospel is, but is it really happening? And how can we stimulate it more effectively? And then the power of resilience and leading and teaching people how to be more resilient is worth it. And definitely stay tuned for those little ideas that Chris does as an elders quorum president with his weekly ministering visits as an elders quorum president, his getting men outside of the elders quorum room and getting them serving in the community, not necessarily as ward members or quorum members, but as community members, just really powerful stuff. You're going to love it. Let's get into it. Here's my interview with Dr. C .K. Bray.

"Then Wednesday was a dud. Then all day today, you're like it's the storm really coming or not, But they were right, they predicted would start around five o'clock, and that's exactly when the West Valley started getting hit by this thing. Raising crazy, crazy crazy time. Alright, I This is the story that we're talking about. Earlier with Scott. And it's a, um The daily caller has 00. I'm sorry. There's a retraction here. Hold on. Wait a minute. Maybe this story is not what we thought. There's a retraction. The Daily caller has retracted the story. The story is based on unpublished in The New York Post was retracted the primary source for the post story recanted his original claims. So remember I told you about the kid who took out a mortgage. His parents house to buy stock. That turns out that might have been a fake story and we got I got fooled by two, but Jack West laid it all on the line by taking a second mortgage on his parent's house. To invest in both games Stop and AMC. According to the New York Post. That's what they thought. But the posed Published an interview. With West that seemed legitimate but according to his own Twitter He completely fooled the publication into thinking the story was real. Oh, that's great. That's fantastic. I love when guys do them. Used to do that. You know when we were kids, you know, Try toe, you know, call on Bs, people. And you know, a lot of people get pissed off when they get hoax like that. I find it like a badge of honor. Ugo. Yeah, when I get it doesn't surprise me when I get screwed by some like that. I'm fine. Like you know what? That kid's good. That kid's good this Jack West. So anyway, The Post published this piece about this kid taking out a $70,000 mortgage to buy Gamestop and AMC and it's all fake Fake news. Big news. Fake news. I'm glad to hear that, actually. Yeah. I mean, you know, as a parent, I'd be pissed. I thought the kid was too casual about it. Well, yeah, you know, you only live once. Okay? Your parents are gonna lose their home. But, hey, you only live once, but then I thought Well, kids are a holes. You know, There's some kids that are huge a holes that's true. And and so it. Look if this happened 30 years ago, and the kids said, Oh, you only live once my parents lose their home. What the hell? I would think. Okay, that's a fake story. Because kids air you know, are so weird and bizarre nowadays. I know Mondo Mondo Mondo is like selling a great grandfather in there. I know. I know it's these days. I know it's a generational thing. I totally understand that I'm very self aware. That's what I sound like. But that being said, I'd like to button up my cardigan here and relight my pipe and and try to tell everybody again. How weird kids are nowadays doesn't know what that is. Why don't you tell what it is? Big Crosby with his pipe that need be loved people. Bo Bo Bo Bo Bo E can't do it very well, But it really doesn't big prosecutors he did he did during the print. Bing Crosby Christmas story. He did it all the time. Gather around, kids. Faithful story received 1942. We just finished with the Japanese. But that zah great story, uh, that we'll not tell me this Now. How did it start Because he posted on Twitter that he just took out a second mortgage on his parent's house while they were at work to buy AMC and Gamestop. That's so New York Post sees this, And so they asked him for an interview. No. What happened? Evidently, what happened was somebody one of the kids friends who said he was just a No. Didn't live in the same neighborhood. Don't even live in the same state said Hey, I just found this online. This sounds like a real story and they did a little investigating, and they they went with it as though as you know, as a confirmed story. And then after he does the interview, he tweets again in all caps. Lm F A l A. You know, last night off, they believed me and so, And I think Fox went with it and daily called a bunch of sites went with it. And then I was looking for some of them. And they've all retracted him, right? Yeah. And his name is Jacko West, Underscore three. And, um, so you know, I totally respect that. You know, I mean, we used to call I used to, you know, make phone calls like that all the time. And you were a crank caller. Well, I mean, I really didn't have much to do during the day. So I was like, so just filling in time radio stations know we'd call businesses like I remember being a Jerry's deli. In and see No right and I looked over and I saw the manager his name. His name is Mitch, right? So I called the Jerry's Deli and Studio City. And the guy picks up the phone and go. Hey, it's Ah, Mitch Encino store. Say, Mitch, how you doing, man? E said we're out of corned beef. We're out of bagels and we gotta Russia. You got to get some stuff over here. Because what? What do you need? What you need what you need. And I gave a list like 43 did not. And that way we sat at the counter and watch this guy commit with all this crap, right? That's bad. IPhone back then. That was really good Bye role. I mean, That call from their phone give you kudos. That's pretty creative. Like little little work. They're fighting is made. Yeah, well, like I said, Oh, my God. Hey, buddy, I You know, I don't need cashier for the paper. I just used my mom's up the street. It was, I know, but no problem. Trusted. That's nice. He walks away and I screw him, right s Oh, yeah, Fun kid to grow up around. But that was that was one of the better ones, right? Because this guy comes in sweating his ass off. But for turkeys, you know, £800 of ground corn, beef and all kinds of crap. Hey, I did prank calls when I was in junior high, and they called the Sheriff's department. No way really. Wait for S O. I don't think you do the refrigerator running that type. No, I took it to a different level. Really? Well, we gotta take a break. Wait. I don't know the full story here. I don't want the you know, we got to take a break story. When we come back, we'll tell this is great. I I didn't know belly. Oh, had this side. This is awesome. Better watch out. I don't know anybody that is going to prison for Frank. Crank phone place. Oh, yeah, Me. Neither were much producer here. I get that her very well. Yes, not. Wow, man, She's like extra guy. So getting into the Duwamish curves a little bit of a challenge right now from the Boeing Access Road, But once you get into the curves, you're looking good. Until you get to South Center. Then it is so gonna be backed up to 1 88, but it certainly isn't the seven mile backup we saw earlier. That was basically all the way down to the 5 16 interchange north down four or five is slow from the West Valley High Widow 167 and South down 167 still pretty much a struggle from Renton from four or five. Now, this is also affecting 5 to 2. So if you're trying to get over to Monroe Toe highway to that slowdown begins in the traffic circle. Interview with Jim Seimas Sports Editor of the Santa Cruz Sentinel

"A very special guest the sports editor for the Santa Cruz Sentinel 23 time Associated Press sports editor award-winner Jim seimas, Jim. Welcome to the show off you drop. Thanks for having me. Appreciate it Jim and I have had the awesome opportunity of meeting each other in a couple of different capacities over the last year or so first. I met you as an intern for the pajaronian wage when I was reveley scholar studying under Brad kava at Cabrillo and then later, you know in my role of sports and Information Specialist at Cabrillo and you obviously still with the Sentinel we wanted to be on the show today because Danny and I are both making money in our careers as writers, you know, we do writing here and there and I guess you could say that we had an innate interests in people who not only right but also write for the Sentinel because we've had on Ryan Masters before a former Sentinel writer who body surfed at wage. Rick's back in I think 2006 that Joe is that the year that he at Mavericks something like that. I'd have to double-check his old writings, but it was early mid two thousand. This may be late home or remembering and Ryan was an amazing interview. He was really fun and we kind of learned our lesson that when it comes to having guests on the show, you really want to look for people who are comfortable using their words took a story and who have a lot of experience kind of funneling down their information, but for somebody like me who grew up reading Hunter Thompson and a lot of writers that came originally from a sports writing background. I've always had this this Romanticism if you will of of what a sports writer is and that was kind of pushed ahead by working for Tony Nunez who was at the time the sports editor at the potter onia now, he is the managing editor and you know working with you and meeting Julie and leading one and I guess it's really cool meeting these people who spend dead. The the bulk of their time living in sport and and kind of articulating and taking sport out and a big part of what I've tried to do during my time to Cabrillo is digitized r-sport make them available for streaming online. Mostly for the purpose of trying to let more people get a chance to a common experience that activity as we enter a world following this covid-19 Choice. It's not following yet. But has we live in this kind of post covid-19 world the time before fans will be allowed back to watch sports happen will probably come after Sportz get back underway, which means that people like us are all of a sudden going to be really pushed back to the Forefront and be creating this bridge to connect people with this activity that they truly love and care for or players or teams or whatever. So kind of from that launching point. Where where did you first get started as a writer and what made you decide that that way? Are you were going to you know, keep the bills paid? Was funny cuz I interviewed so many kids that are college committed and asked what they're going to major in and half of them don't know and I'm fine with that. But I and then there's other kids who do they knew in fifth grade that I wanted to be a sportswriter. Excuse me. I have some allergies here. So I, every now and then around fourth fifth grade page and initially wanted to be like the San Francisco Giants announcer and there's only two of them and I know like connection to baseball whatsoever other than being a fan and I kind of even figured out that age like hey there I you know X ball players are getting these jobs. You're not going to get one and then, you know, just taking radio television type stuff and you know if I had a face or voice for neither, so I just kind of jumped into you know, a fifth grade. We did a little writing project. Would that where we had our books published or bound at least and I can't remember it was unbeknownst to me boss. So maybe in a contest and I wasn't a very good writer, but it won an award and I was very happy about that. I still have that book in my basement. I would like to say it was probably like Game of Thrones before Game of Thrones happened, but far simpler only three pages. So, you know, I did my own artwork for it with you know, drawings and swords and blood. Anyway, that was awful. I was hooked. I obviously don't like didn't read recently like a large audience at all, but I have so much fun writing that I really enjoyed creative writing in junior high school besides that my writing was absolutely atrocious growing up all my papers were covered in red ink from the teachers and that kind of was like the kitchen me ask to like. Hey, let's let's try harder at this. Let's try and figure out how to construct a sentence a little bit better and and your thoughts and I'm specimens. I'm still battling today, but I remember I try not to be sports editor wage. Junior High and the junior high paper is pretty much all song dedications and this and that and very little of substance but I got beat out for that position and took still enjoyed writing and then I did I did a couple of years on my high school paper at Westmont high and Campbell. And again, I did poorly in this like a British literature class. So I actually took off journalism twice you're only allowed to take it once but I knew that's what I was going to go into and you know, so and after that I went to West Valley College in Saratoga and I did far too many semesters on their page Church went to San Jose State did far too many semesters on their paper. I wasn't really like set on graduating. I was having so much fun on each step. Excuse me, boss. So on each stamp learning so much, you know when you were

Interview with Lt. Gov. Spencer Cox About The Coronavirus Situation

"All right let's go to the phone line lieutenant governor Spencer **** is on the phone Spencer **** how are you Sir I am well good morning morning lady hope you all are well so far we're fine yep doing well so let's talk coronavirus shall we let's suppose let's talk about the opening up of the the state it's a it's a calculated risk I suppose to go from orange to yellow and now I believe the only orange places laughter they Salt Lake City and magna and West Valley are they still in orange Spencer and a partition one county correct now so it's kind of a calculated risk going to the yellow phase how were how were you and the Utah department of health and the coronavirus task force monitoring all of we we have a we have a dashboard that updates every day were tied in with that with all the hospitals across the state and and we do we do watch it very closely see what to see which direction we're going Sir so there's two pieces for that one is of course directional are you moving up and up or down and into is the overall the the overall pressure that's being put on the on the system seven yeah what what is the best availability what it yeah I see you have a ability and to you you have to watch both of those you can't take either of them kind of in a in a vacuum the the good news is that our our resource availability is still extremely high as as high as any any weed out there we've got a very very good job of the not overwhelming our health care system we've been able to to bring in the supplies that we didn't have in March so that we are well well prepared if there is a spike of some sort or a surge in in case through them and hospitalization that and by the way that hospitalization is the more important piece in the case yeah right who's getting inspected and how it's impacting them it is a critical piece of this and so ads were re opening we were really also focusing and this was the update to the plan that came out last week he's a real emphasis on those that are at higher risk and how we protect them so we know that half or death in the state of calm in our long term care facilities into doing more to protect them of course anyone over the age of sixty five and then a real focus on our multicultural communities as well we we Filipino community they make up fifteen percent of the state but thirty percent of the hospitalizations that so we've got to focus more there are to protect people from up from this virus so we had a Memorial Day holiday and people feeling cooped up feeling anxious started socializing hands and socializing pretty close together in a lot of I'm sure you've seen the pictures of of people recreation at a pool I think it was in Utah county band and people at at parks and people were streaming to the canyons and hiking and and generally not observing social distancing very well can you comment comment on that and is there any way to control that sure sure I can comment and we you know that you guys said this before but the virus doesn't care how bored we are cooped up we are it is just looking for hosts to replicate and we're we're cautiously hopeful and V. experts we talked to there's so much we don't know about this virus we there there is some belief down some evidence of their innocence even Ali to what we do know that being outside is always better than being inside so if you're going to be close to people much better to be closer outside the main thing so so those are those are things we know but but we're still obviously very concerned if again especially about those in the high risk category and then people who might spread it to them a symptomatically and so we really we we just want to urge people to prevent backsliding we we really do need people to be careful to to maintain social difference wherever possible how to wear masks as matches as much as possible in public all of these things are going to allow us to have more normal in our lives than than last I mean it's the very thing said that though that we're doing that will will prevent us from having a normal fee that was that we wanted to just really strongly encourage people to to continue to be vigilant and make a note the social differences we're talking to the lieutenant governor of Utah Spencer **** so so what happens if in a week or two weeks from now went up people did get out and do a lot of socializing we start seeing some significant spikes how do you how difficult will that be to turn to turn things back down once it's at once people are out and socializing it seems like almost there be no stopping them can we do that well well certainly it's something that we're we're gonna have to watch very closely and that the whole purpose of what we built up to now is is this idea that we can be more surgical smoke we do see hot spots or outbreak we can actually go and attack those areas and and do it you know and and we can we can we have mobile testing now we we we have the ability to trace and and contact tracing with people who have been infected to work both forward and backward to figure out where they got it from and who who they have been in contact with and get those people quarantine and and certainly again the media messages are very helpful with it it's really interesting in retrospect if you go back and look at the data about social distancing and not social distancing he had less to do with government mandates and more to do with that kind of media coverage of the the virus and people making their own decision as to what we're really hopeful if that if that were protecting against those people who are the most vulnerable because we learn so much more about this disease now and who is who it impacts that the most and and that we're allowed to have but you again more normalcy while still protecting people and and and having the best of both worlds but that that that's a tricky line to navigate and and that everybody's doing the best they can right now Gina I have a question so I live in I live in an orange lemon salt lake city and I've heard from several people that their kids who were on soccer teams are baseball teams or things like that the reside in Salt Lake City those teams have started practicing in areas where where it's been relaxed a little bit they're going to bed on a full or going out to devote to Jordan's and practicing that like well they're they're looser out there so we can have a better practice out there if you can have them arrested is there a danger in people that live in an orange area going in behaving that way in a yellow area shouldn't shouldn't we if we live in Salt Lake City are are soccer players are in Salt Lake City you have to observe those rules there you can't go somewhere else and do that yeah there there's certainly a danger in that and again that the whole purpose of having a bit more localized system is two ways to be vigilant in areas where we do have outbreaks will reduce the higher rates of of incident and that is that there's two teams he said that one of course it is a physical piece for the other one is just that the kind of mental awareness piece that we we do need to be more vigilant we do need to be more careful and so that that is concerning we have left it up to the local health department a course they're the only ones that actually have the authority anyway Q. what to enforce those that those regulations and to to be in touch with people I'm still a lot of debate right now and a lot of fine being done on on children as doctors and and their ability to spread it to others and and so we're we're learning more about about that and if it is that you couldn't get your concern as was originally thought or not hopefully you know over the next few weeks will have even better information and we'll have better information about how it's spreading in Utah we do have the the surveillance what we'll call surveillance testing it it's basically randomized testing that's going on over ten thousand Utahns and we should start getting data back on that in the next week or two and so we're really anxious to see who had it already and where it's spreading right now and that will help us make even better decisions at the local level I things are really serious down on the and down on the Navajo in data nation and that doesn't count as part of our statistics it's a separate thing what is the is be part of the reservation is in Utah are we doing something to help the them yeah I checked we were doing more than than the other states and it's been a little bit of a source of contention but I mean in a positive way for us we we were we were the first to send out mobile units I'm down there to lead to increased testing capacity and and to help to help that did that the nation we've been working very closely with president knows who used to be that the vice the vice president of the Navajo Nation and my counterpart we have a long standing relationship we've also been sending our our National Guard resources we've got a we've been sending food and resources as well I'm a huge project here in the state that we're we're really proud of the farmers of Utah there's a there's a donation people can make and that they can donate money to the farmers to buy food from the farmers were struggling and deliver that food to the Navajo Nation just last week we took truckloads of of of land which is really important to that to the nation we're sending sheep down there as well and it's been a really really positive a relationship with the Navajo Nation Spencer **** always nice to hear from you keep us safe and healthy and the best to your family babby and your kids are doing well and we'll talk to you again soon thank you thanks guys keep up the good work
