"If you'd like to win a pair of those tickets, you can do that by heading over to the contest page at data are dot com. Um, one of the things that we have talked about. I've talked about a lot on this show has been about affordable housing here in the valley that it's in short supply. That people that are renting or people that are looking to buy at entry level are not able to and with what we are about to see, with the moratorium being lifted on evictions. We're going to see more and more people out there trying to find housing. There are a few things that obviously they call them necessities for a reason. The food you eat gasoline for your vehicle and housing. It's it's essential for people. And when you are at a very high level in that area, it takes away from the economy because there isn't much discretionary income for those families with those choices that are out there. The the free market always kind of dictates the price on things When things sort of premium, they're much more expensive. How are we able to have entry level housing? My introduction to this in in mindset anyway was when I was much younger. Um, I worked on a on a resort island. I worked on a couple of islands called Sanibel and Captiva Islands. They were sister Islands just off the coast of Fort Myers in in southwest Florida. Very upscale, Very affluent, Um, a lot like Paradise Valley here but on an island Lot of the homes were second homes, vacation homes for people. Beautiful resort speech is very, very upscale, very expensive, and obviously you have to have people that work in the restaurants and work in the hotels and work in those places. So a lot of it was commuting for people where their were vans that would bring people onto the island of work during the day. But there was affordable housing in one part of the island for the people that worked at the restaurants that were Islanders They live there year round. They worked in the restaurants in the businesses, and it was essential to the the way that island worked. And it was a part of the island that was left that way that as far as I know, it may have changed now. But there was some not a whole lot but some affordable housing there for the year round employees that they knew were essential workers to the businesses that served the community that lived on the island, part time on vacation homes and the vacationers that came Here in the Valley. It's a different animal in the sense that this isn't a luxury. This is something that's a necessity. So in the West Valley, there are a couple of different companies. A beta Minnesota debates developer called Domini UM, which recently opened a regional headquarters in Phoenix proposed an apartment complex or apartment complexes and Buckeye Goodyear in surprise that would have provided a combined 1570 units to individuals or households that earn between $27,000 a year and $51,000 a year. So the proposed complexes this is one of this is the vice president of Domini. Um, the proposed complexes could help people like the day I start unified school district teachers entry level employees at Luke Air Force Base. WalMart managers first responders. And so it would be a way to have affordable housing in the West Valley. It's getting caught up in red tape. It's about congestion and about, um, uh, traffic, but it's a problem that should be solved. I don't know why the West Valley governments would not be in favor of making projects like this work. Working class families trying to find places that are affordable. It's absolutely essential to the lifeblood of communities and, um, having come out of you know myself. I was that was me for decades. That was me. You're part of that crowd of people. That works hard and you are making a little bit too much money to be subsidized by the government with things but you don't make enough money to live in the neighborhood. You work in. And this is a way to solve some of those problems and start taking some of the heat off families that need to find affordable housing. You know, you think about the commute for families, and I'm not saying that we should sustain everybody. This isn't a government program. This is about affordable housing in the sense of we're going to build nice places for families to live that they're going to pay for, But it's going to be geared toward people that are in that working class, and I don't know how that's a where there's a downside to that. Maybe I'm wrong. But I look at this and I think, how do we start coming up with ways to solve this problem? Or at least alleviated a little bit? Until we kind of get up? Catch up with the growth that we're having? I think that by doing that you're going to also perpetuate better growth. I love the fact that we have. I want the millionaires and billionaires to come to Arizona. They are the job creators. There's no doubt about it, and I love the areas we have North Scottsdale Paradise Valley out and you know, Peoria in the East value becoming very, very affluent. I think that's incredible. And it's something that I'd be honest. I strive for it. I'd love to be there someday. But the working class which I think everybody agrees, is kind of the backbone of what makes this machine go. We need to make sure that there's affordable housing for them that they still have some discretionary income to live a life. Put money away for retirement. Do the things that they need to do. And projects like this go a long way into making those things affordable that making those things possible for those families so that you're not living on one end of town and driving all the way across town to where you work. And I'm hoping that this is a step in that direction. And, um, that somehow the red tape of the cities this is these are one of those ways where government can work with private industry and make things happen as opposed to it being one or the other either a private thing or a public project that's used, you know, paid for with taxpayer dollars, so I would love to see more of these things happen. Where there's affordable housing. Um this complex is that what old road and cotton lane and surprise it was delayed because of traffic concerns. In some area, residents started a petition to block low income and high density apartments. So addressing that other part of this would be property value. Which people are worried that you know, it's almost like you are. You are moving Section eight. That's not what we're talking about. Um, and there has to be a place where people can live and thrive. The reason why this is a topic that's passionate to me is growing up with a single mom who didn't have many options. My you know we were raised differently. And you know, poverty didn't mean and we didn't even call it poverty where I didn't even know what that meant. Um, but not having a whole lot. You don't equate that equate that with crime or dirty. It doesn't mean one and the same And it shouldn't always be. They shouldn't be connected in that way. And I'm sorry that it's sometimes sometimes it is. Um so I'm hoping that this gets worked out. Interview with Jim Seimas Sports Editor of the Santa Cruz Sentinel

"A very special guest the sports editor for the Santa Cruz Sentinel 23 time Associated Press sports editor award-winner Jim seimas, Jim. Welcome to the show off you drop. Thanks for having me. Appreciate it Jim and I have had the awesome opportunity of meeting each other in a couple of different capacities over the last year or so first. I met you as an intern for the pajaronian wage when I was reveley scholar studying under Brad kava at Cabrillo and then later, you know in my role of sports and Information Specialist at Cabrillo and you obviously still with the Sentinel we wanted to be on the show today because Danny and I are both making money in our careers as writers, you know, we do writing here and there and I guess you could say that we had an innate interests in people who not only right but also write for the Sentinel because we've had on Ryan Masters before a former Sentinel writer who body surfed at wage. Rick's back in I think 2006 that Joe is that the year that he at Mavericks something like that. I'd have to double-check his old writings, but it was early mid two thousand. This may be late home or remembering and Ryan was an amazing interview. He was really fun and we kind of learned our lesson that when it comes to having guests on the show, you really want to look for people who are comfortable using their words took a story and who have a lot of experience kind of funneling down their information, but for somebody like me who grew up reading Hunter Thompson and a lot of writers that came originally from a sports writing background. I've always had this this Romanticism if you will of of what a sports writer is and that was kind of pushed ahead by working for Tony Nunez who was at the time the sports editor at the potter onia now, he is the managing editor and you know working with you and meeting Julie and leading one and I guess it's really cool meeting these people who spend dead. The the bulk of their time living in sport and and kind of articulating and taking sport out and a big part of what I've tried to do during my time to Cabrillo is digitized r-sport make them available for streaming online. Mostly for the purpose of trying to let more people get a chance to a common experience that activity as we enter a world following this covid-19 Choice. It's not following yet. But has we live in this kind of post covid-19 world the time before fans will be allowed back to watch sports happen will probably come after Sportz get back underway, which means that people like us are all of a sudden going to be really pushed back to the Forefront and be creating this bridge to connect people with this activity that they truly love and care for or players or teams or whatever. So kind of from that launching point. Where where did you first get started as a writer and what made you decide that that way? Are you were going to you know, keep the bills paid? Was funny cuz I interviewed so many kids that are college committed and asked what they're going to major in and half of them don't know and I'm fine with that. But I and then there's other kids who do they knew in fifth grade that I wanted to be a sportswriter. Excuse me. I have some allergies here. So I, every now and then around fourth fifth grade page and initially wanted to be like the San Francisco Giants announcer and there's only two of them and I know like connection to baseball whatsoever other than being a fan and I kind of even figured out that age like hey there I you know X ball players are getting these jobs. You're not going to get one and then, you know, just taking radio television type stuff and you know if I had a face or voice for neither, so I just kind of jumped into you know, a fifth grade. We did a little writing project. Would that where we had our books published or bound at least and I can't remember it was unbeknownst to me boss. So maybe in a contest and I wasn't a very good writer, but it won an award and I was very happy about that. I still have that book in my basement. I would like to say it was probably like Game of Thrones before Game of Thrones happened, but far simpler only three pages. So, you know, I did my own artwork for it with you know, drawings and swords and blood. Anyway, that was awful. I was hooked. I obviously don't like didn't read recently like a large audience at all, but I have so much fun writing that I really enjoyed creative writing in junior high school besides that my writing was absolutely atrocious growing up all my papers were covered in red ink from the teachers and that kind of was like the kitchen me ask to like. Hey, let's let's try harder at this. Let's try and figure out how to construct a sentence a little bit better and and your thoughts and I'm specimens. I'm still battling today, but I remember I try not to be sports editor wage. Junior High and the junior high paper is pretty much all song dedications and this and that and very little of substance but I got beat out for that position and took still enjoyed writing and then I did I did a couple of years on my high school paper at Westmont high and Campbell. And again, I did poorly in this like a British literature class. So I actually took off journalism twice you're only allowed to take it once but I knew that's what I was going to go into and you know, so and after that I went to West Valley College in Saratoga and I did far too many semesters on their page Church went to San Jose State did far too many semesters on their paper. I wasn't really like set on graduating. I was having so much fun on each step. Excuse me, boss. So on each stamp learning so much, you know when you were

Interview with Lt. Gov. Spencer Cox About The Coronavirus Situation

"All right let's go to the phone line lieutenant governor Spencer **** is on the phone Spencer **** how are you Sir I am well good morning morning lady hope you all are well so far we're fine yep doing well so let's talk coronavirus shall we let's suppose let's talk about the opening up of the the state it's a it's a calculated risk I suppose to go from orange to yellow and now I believe the only orange places laughter they Salt Lake City and magna and West Valley are they still in orange Spencer and a partition one county correct now so it's kind of a calculated risk going to the yellow phase how were how were you and the Utah department of health and the coronavirus task force monitoring all of we we have a we have a dashboard that updates every day were tied in with that with all the hospitals across the state and and we do we do watch it very closely see what to see which direction we're going Sir so there's two pieces for that one is of course directional are you moving up and up or down and into is the overall the the overall pressure that's being put on the on the system seven yeah what what is the best availability what it yeah I see you have a ability and to you you have to watch both of those you can't take either of them kind of in a in a vacuum the the good news is that our our resource availability is still extremely high as as high as any any weed out there we've got a very very good job of the not overwhelming our health care system we've been able to to bring in the supplies that we didn't have in March so that we are well well prepared if there is a spike of some sort or a surge in in case through them and hospitalization that and by the way that hospitalization is the more important piece in the case yeah right who's getting inspected and how it's impacting them it is a critical piece of this and so ads were re opening we were really also focusing and this was the update to the plan that came out last week he's a real emphasis on those that are at higher risk and how we protect them so we know that half or death in the state of calm in our long term care facilities into doing more to protect them of course anyone over the age of sixty five and then a real focus on our multicultural communities as well we we Filipino community they make up fifteen percent of the state but thirty percent of the hospitalizations that so we've got to focus more there are to protect people from up from this virus so we had a Memorial Day holiday and people feeling cooped up feeling anxious started socializing hands and socializing pretty close together in a lot of I'm sure you've seen the pictures of of people recreation at a pool I think it was in Utah county band and people at at parks and people were streaming to the canyons and hiking and and generally not observing social distancing very well can you comment comment on that and is there any way to control that sure sure I can comment and we you know that you guys said this before but the virus doesn't care how bored we are cooped up we are it is just looking for hosts to replicate and we're we're cautiously hopeful and V. experts we talked to there's so much we don't know about this virus we there there is some belief down some evidence of their innocence even Ali to what we do know that being outside is always better than being inside so if you're going to be close to people much better to be closer outside the main thing so so those are those are things we know but but we're still obviously very concerned if again especially about those in the high risk category and then people who might spread it to them a symptomatically and so we really we we just want to urge people to prevent backsliding we we really do need people to be careful to to maintain social difference wherever possible how to wear masks as matches as much as possible in public all of these things are going to allow us to have more normal in our lives than than last I mean it's the very thing said that though that we're doing that will will prevent us from having a normal fee that was that we wanted to just really strongly encourage people to to continue to be vigilant and make a note the social differences we're talking to the lieutenant governor of Utah Spencer **** so so what happens if in a week or two weeks from now went up people did get out and do a lot of socializing we start seeing some significant spikes how do you how difficult will that be to turn to turn things back down once it's at once people are out and socializing it seems like almost there be no stopping them can we do that well well certainly it's something that we're we're gonna have to watch very closely and that the whole purpose of what we built up to now is is this idea that we can be more surgical smoke we do see hot spots or outbreak we can actually go and attack those areas and and do it you know and and we can we can we have mobile testing now we we we have the ability to trace and and contact tracing with people who have been infected to work both forward and backward to figure out where they got it from and who who they have been in contact with and get those people quarantine and and certainly again the media messages are very helpful with it it's really interesting in retrospect if you go back and look at the data about social distancing and not social distancing he had less to do with government mandates and more to do with that kind of media coverage of the the virus and people making their own decision as to what we're really hopeful if that if that were protecting against those people who are the most vulnerable because we learn so much more about this disease now and who is who it impacts that the most and and that we're allowed to have but you again more normalcy while still protecting people and and and having the best of both worlds but that that that's a tricky line to navigate and and that everybody's doing the best they can right now Gina I have a question so I live in I live in an orange lemon salt lake city and I've heard from several people that their kids who were on soccer teams are baseball teams or things like that the reside in Salt Lake City those teams have started practicing in areas where where it's been relaxed a little bit they're going to bed on a full or going out to devote to Jordan's and practicing that like well they're they're looser out there so we can have a better practice out there if you can have them arrested is there a danger in people that live in an orange area going in behaving that way in a yellow area shouldn't shouldn't we if we live in Salt Lake City are are soccer players are in Salt Lake City you have to observe those rules there you can't go somewhere else and do that yeah there there's certainly a danger in that and again that the whole purpose of having a bit more localized system is two ways to be vigilant in areas where we do have outbreaks will reduce the higher rates of of incident and that is that there's two teams he said that one of course it is a physical piece for the other one is just that the kind of mental awareness piece that we we do need to be more vigilant we do need to be more careful and so that that is concerning we have left it up to the local health department a course they're the only ones that actually have the authority anyway Q. what to enforce those that those regulations and to to be in touch with people I'm still a lot of debate right now and a lot of fine being done on on children as doctors and and their ability to spread it to others and and so we're we're learning more about about that and if it is that you couldn't get your concern as was originally thought or not hopefully you know over the next few weeks will have even better information and we'll have better information about how it's spreading in Utah we do have the the surveillance what we'll call surveillance testing it it's basically randomized testing that's going on over ten thousand Utahns and we should start getting data back on that in the next week or two and so we're really anxious to see who had it already and where it's spreading right now and that will help us make even better decisions at the local level I things are really serious down on the and down on the Navajo in data nation and that doesn't count as part of our statistics it's a separate thing what is the is be part of the reservation is in Utah are we doing something to help the them yeah I checked we were doing more than than the other states and it's been a little bit of a source of contention but I mean in a positive way for us we we were we were the first to send out mobile units I'm down there to lead to increased testing capacity and and to help to help that did that the nation we've been working very closely with president knows who used to be that the vice the vice president of the Navajo Nation and my counterpart we have a long standing relationship we've also been sending our our National Guard resources we've got a we've been sending food and resources as well I'm a huge project here in the state that we're we're really proud of the farmers of Utah there's a there's a donation people can make and that they can donate money to the farmers to buy food from the farmers were struggling and deliver that food to the Navajo Nation just last week we took truckloads of of of land which is really important to that to the nation we're sending sheep down there as well and it's been a really really positive a relationship with the Navajo Nation Spencer **** always nice to hear from you keep us safe and healthy and the best to your family babby and your kids are doing well and we'll talk to you again soon thank you thanks guys keep up the good work

Like, like it's got to be at the hiccups Java up right? I mean but I mean, there's got to be a passion to really wanting. To help businesses to take a little bit through your journey. Well, I'm very grateful for my members because believe it or not. They do think me frequently of course, like any other job. They also Quinn never thanks, me, so well late over there, Quin sorry, but yeah, well, one thing that's unique about my chamber of commerce members do business with each other. But they look after each other like family. Now I came here prior to my position as president with the chamber. I worked for an economic development agency with the county in a city and county prior to that it was business consulting. I have worked number of different with a number of different companies throughout my years and did a lot of consulting as well. We want to send you some information to the south west valley chamber of commerce. All you gotta do is text or chamber to four one one ninety two three again. Texture chamber to four one one ninety two three. I think one of the misconceptions that people have of the chamber is. Is, is they there under the assumption, not even sure where the assumption comes from, but they're under the assumption that it's the chambers responsibility to drive business to them, almost like the chamber of commerce is, is their lead source so take us through the distinction of, of during the chamber to increase your business. But more of the networking, the relationships that you build and the other types of resources at your local chambers going to provide you never can, obviously is, is a big piece of it building connections between the members and what the chamber can do as far as opening doors might chamber of commerce is a little unique. We are a tourist and visitor center. So we actually do provide leads to our members from people visiting people ru relocating to the area. So that's a another unique thing about the supplus value, Jim roof commerce. I might I spent, you know, I do a lot of work. I spent a lot of my time and the real. Estate industry, and I, I get a lot of questions. I get a lot of questions for my investors. How's the market and what's going on with the market, and are we in a bubble and pretty much what I tell them, what makes Phoenix unique is, is stopped listening to CNN and Fox News because Phoenix is an island all by itself when it comes down to real estate but focus on the jobs. And when you subscribe to, you know, publications like the Phoenix business journal, that's always talking about what companies are coming here. What companies to come in here? It tells you, it's an key indicator of the health of our real estate market to me, what's going on in the west valley, who's coming to town who's been coming to town, and why should businesses consider the west valley to, to open up shop. Okay. This as mouthful right there, a lonely, take me an hour to get through entire list of, of what's got a PowerPoint presentation deck. And I have been telling people that in my area in the. And the western half at a county, we're at the we're at the bottom of the upper slope, as far as the economy is going off, for of my cities, have something big happening bowl corporation, just opened in Goodyear. Tell us and has another hotel be an open. There's five new hotels within the next two years coming into my four. Slip park has about ready to start developing over there. City center there. "First ten days of the search for Susan west valley. Detectives served three search warrants at Josh and Susan's home on Sarah circle. They also served a warrant on his minivan. Each time. They came away with digital devices by my count that included at least seven computers, seven hard drives five flash drives three s d cards to cell phones, a digital camera and camcorder. Here's how the RCAF L handled all that kind of stuff and investigator brought in a piece of evidence a computer cell phone flash drive, or whatever the hell then paired up that outside investigator with one of its F B I trained examiners we work with the case agent because it's their case they bring it to us assisting them. But we don't know the full background of the case with a computer hard drive or flash drive. They made a bit forbid copy called a mirror, then they used a hash. That's an algorithm that provides something akin to a unique fingerprint for divisor file to make sure the mirror. Exactly matched the original. And we just work off of that image. We never touch the original item, which is different than if you have blood evidence you to do DNA on blood. You have to take some of that sample in order to get the DNA results. We don't have to do that with digital. We can make verified copy so to speak at the time. Our CFL's were using a number of different software utilities to. Attract information from the mirrors in the Powell case that usually meant a program called forensic tool kit produced by the company access data F T K is also known examined every sector of the mirror even the blank space when you delete a file in windows. You don't really deleting? The file you're just telling the computer that that space that it took on the hard drives now Ville using it. So until that information is written over, those files could be retrieved and even when parts of the file were overwritten, these forensic software programs could sometimes reconstruct the rest by finding the remaining segments. Typically, when you save a file it's not saving it to just one sector on the hard drive is going to it could save it in like twenty pieces. So sometimes you could have several pieces overridden, but the majority of the other pieces remain. So you might still be able to retrieve the majority of the file in the end F T K generated a report with hyper links like the links would find on a web. Site that pointed to specific files that way, the investigators could sift out anything that was not relevant to their case. Intellectually break it out into types. You know, like could be Japex were documents emails, you then can go through and review if all's on there, as you might imagine this work required. A lot of time. You can search terms with our software. But in the end, that's just gonna find those terms. I mean, there may be stuff in the document that unless you actually look at the documentary not gonna know whether it was really relevant or not it takes that human element. The investigators had to locate the signal the midst the noise..

"Josh Powell loaded his sons, Charlie and Brayden into their car seats on Saturday, December nineteenth of two thousand and nine. He was leaving west valley City Utah for his dad's house on the outskirts of Puyallup, Washington, his wife Susan had been missing for twelve days. LS Maxwell west valley city's lead detective on the case was powerless to keep joshing Utah. It was frustrating at the most because. Is a crime ever investigating here. And. The individuals that were really focusing on is now leaving the state and going twelve hours away on Christmas Eve and Christmas day. Josh dropped the boys with Susan's parents each time. He refused to even set foot inside his in laws home Susan's, dad. Chuck Cox had suspected from the beginning. The Josh was responsible for his daughter's disappearance say for other than what did you do? You creep. You know, you'd better get her. You'd better find fighter shows where she is. Free her from wherever you have stashed or whatever he done between Christmas and New Year's west valley. Police learned about Joshua's request to withdraw Susan's retirement using the power of attorney. She had signed earlier that year. They couldn't stop the distribution. The paperwork was airtight. But the start of the new year Ellis learned Josh did not intend to come back. He was moving away from west valley permanently. It was surprising to us. But it wasn't. Remember police had been keeping close tabs on Josh's movements, including using a GPS tracker Rozan we're following him or doing everything that we can to see if we pick up on any cues, and he'll kind of. Screw up somewhere. He'll be like. Okay there. It is. Or you know and build a locator word of Josh's arrival spread quickly among the community. In Puyallup, didn't take long for Josh to kind of ruffled the waters up there. And you know, when people start learning that he was in the area and the kids were coming to church or whatnot. You know, it caused some concern and rightfully so because I think everybody wanted to see an end in this investigation. Probably want to see him sitting in jail. And then obviously Susan to be found..
