"And the unemployment number went up, 3 .5 to 3 .8, which means people are coming back into the labor force. Why is that good? It's going to keep wage growth down if more people get off the sidelines. Also, of course, there was 110 ,000 jobs revised down. And you can hear more of that conversation on the Bloomberg Businessweek podcast. You can download it wherever you get your podcasts. So, on Wall Street, it is looking now like a mixed close, with the S &P 500 index up 7 points, a gain of 0 .02%. There you have it, sound of the closing bell at the New York Stock Exchange, and it is on to the weekend, on to a long holiday weekend for a lot of people. We've got the Dow up 119, higher by 0 .03%, Nasdaq, as we recap here, down 3 points, lower close for Nasdaq, Nasdaq 100 index down 10 points, drop there of 0 .01%. "Something conditions of The that's those losses just and average looks completely what's here like it's the divorced going on setup to finish then out from this all the as Wednesday day of higher that. afternoon. we by head into more But look than Friday. at 100 the data So a points, that bit of we a got We reprieve got this which an morning, up here about awful yesterday to four guys. tenths day What was does that yesterday of flirting be a tell percent. sure. you but with about clawing a The Dow break The S Jones economic &P below Industrial back 500, some the 200 day moving average, now trying to create some distance between the two, higher by about thirty four points or eight tenths of a percent while the NASDAQ is going to close higher by one point four percent. And let's check in on the Russell 2000 because the cyclical trade had started to gain a little bit of steam. You did not necessarily see that today. The Russell is your relative laggard on the day, only higher by about a tenth of a percent. All right, so let's dig a little bit deeper into the S &P 500 and you know probably looked a lot different certainly earlier today right but now Scarlett you've got what almost 400, 377 names to the upside in the S &P 500, 125 to the downside. The S &P 500 which is skimming along that oversold RSI level you as know soon as it hits it, it just kicks through the upside. You find buyers coming in. Yeah and we close near our highs. It's notable that the last 35 minutes of trading or so it's pretty much it feels like it was a straight line up. When you look at the sector breakdown I mean just 30 minutes ago this was pretty mixed at least at midday it was definitely flirting with a lot more red. In the end you have autos and components, software and services, and media entertainment all gaining at least one and a half percent. Look at autos up five percent as a group and then on the downside energy stocks lower by more than three percent telecom stocks utilities so you have energy falling with gasoline prices and oil prices as Molly mentioned earlier but utilities and telecoms those are your bond proxies. It's like everything is awesome right again I don't know it's kind of crazy all right so let's get to some of the individual gainers in today's session check it out everybody Tesla top in the S &P 500 of the NASDAQ 100 up another six percent in today's session it did trade lower earlier in the week right there were some concerns about weak production and delivery numbers that put some pressure I really would look for anything kind of specific the EU is formally launching an anti subsidies probe into EVs made in China does that possibly help or hurt Tesla I don't know there's another report noting that Tesla taking its Cybertruck testing to Mexico also it's being seen in some excitement over that I couldn't find a real catalyst but nonetheless investors certainly did enough so Mexico that they were buying into Tesla and then check out the cruise lines guys it wasn't so good yesterday when cutting price you had Morgan and Stanley estimate cutting targets on the big three cruise liners they were under pressure yesterday investors coming in short capital stockbrokers analyst Greg Johnson raising the recommendation on carnival to hold from sell carnival up point 2 seven percent and don't forget to those falling oil prices which is a big cost line on the balance sheet for the big cruise companies that coming down may be helping them and so you also had check it out Norwegian it was up in today's session Royal Caribbean up about third 3 % Norwegian up almost 4 % Molly in today's trade and you have you're looking at the energy names right I am so like you said yeah maybe those those that's was good sign for the cruise lines but not so good if you are in the oil business so today oil plunged most more in than a year assigns that demand is flagging in this great and this high -rate environment is we're really gearing up here for this higher for longer stretch in interest rates so West Texas intermediate crude shot settled below $85 a barrel today it's the biggest one -day drop since last year so the bigger decliners today's valero energy marathon petroleum and Phillips 66 all of those down than more three percent on the day let's take a look at what happened in the yield space here because we talk about that relentless climb higher in yields actually taking most of the treasury market into oversold conditions here is that sell -off I was really looked like it was going to extend for her lower shifting most of the activity on the longer end of the curve of the two -year down about ten percent and on the longer and you're drop seeing a of about six basis points or so on the 30 -year we should point out though overnight there was a lot of volatility in that 30 -year yield did actually trade above five percent for the first time in quite a few years and I am curious guys about your thoughts here about the direction of yields it's interesting we were speaking with Bill Gross a little bit earlier he really was hammering home this idea of how the market the treasury market is in oversold conditions and that at least on a technical level might actually somewhat provide of a root reprieve but of course he's still in that camp that yields are destined to move higher from where they are right now they can be oversold for really long time it's not clear what the catalyst is for that to correct itself and of course it was the jobs related data that really sparked these big moves yesterday and of course and tomorrow we'll get jobless claims which a lot of people are saying is the number that they're keyed in on because it's high frequency data comes out on a weekly basis as opposed to monthly basis yeah two hundred ten thousand is what we're looking for two hundred four thousand was the this month uh... our previous week excuse me and i do think uh... it is a market that continues to move i feel like in a big way swing in terms of the data points in the data points that really matter to the federal reserve and i think we see that uh... certainly play out so it'll be interesting to see what we get tomorrow and then of course on friday with that monthly jobs report which is all data backward looking uh... but nonetheless it certainly can set a tone in the marketplace and it's definitely to be the biggest one that we get this week and of course so many of us didn't think we were going to get that report this week remember we were bracing for a shutdown not too long ago so nice little surprise that we will get the payrolls report looking for a little bit of a moderation there but i've been hearing i don't know if you guys as well for some more people calling for more the hundred thousand level in payrolls gains and would really be starting to signal steeper drop -off from where we've been all right well hold out hope because forget we don't have to go through this whole budget debacle while one more time in november also no they're gonna figure it out romaine they're gonna figure it out over the weekend and it's gonna be a lot of face sailing yeah don't get me sarcastic yes you know uh... you know on that point though i i thought that there was a lot of questions i know we pose a lot of questions to our guests here about the impact on government finances from this debacle and just the overall dysfunction and fitch ratings actually did come out and make kind of it clear that the downgrade they did earlier already sort of takes into account all the mess that we're in right now basically saying that the reasons why they downgraded were exactly the reasons why we ended up with mccarthy being booted out which is that quite frankly you do have a dysfunctional congress and at least in the house a congress that is kind of beholden right now to a very small small of minority members who just kinda want to see the world burn you know bread jacobs who you guys also had on executive chair over at expo i love logistics i love trucking it tells us we had a month first no okay but we did it better um anyway but well he had such a great perspective kind of on the world and and you know in terms of washington he's like yeah we watch it you know um but so great that we actually have a government two parties two different sides and it does function versus you know do you go to a country where it's really one leader who just calls and all the he shots talks specifically about yes we call that those aren't democracies carol can you compare our democracy to democracy other you're comparing our democracy to a dictatorship well basically glass half full perspective i don't know where you're this going with carol basically saying that it is much better than a dictatorship right that we do actually have some level some of functionality well no you don't i lost my train of thought no no i think you can end it there we have some level of functionality no no please let her keep digging another thing that was interesting that he pointed out that when we look at the economy he talked about these stimulus programs whether it's infrastructure spending these legislative things that actually did done get in washington see it does function occasionally um in that that is going to provide a level of liquidity to the economy and now i thought that was an interesting highlight that he brought out yeah there's that and then

"Midland is the capital of the Permian oil region. Everything in Midland is about oil and about Monet. The main tourist attraction is a petroleum museum in front of the petroleum club in the town. You have this massive display to say, let's make oil great game more. And it also the display goes and they say today is a great day to drill for oil. That's how we are blast. He's a columnist for Bloomberg opinion and he reports on the oil industry. For years, Javier has traveled to the region of West Texas that's an epicenter of the shale oil drilling bonanza that has powered the U.S. economy shaken up global energy markets and shaped geopolitics for more than a decade. Now the beginning of the end is within sight and Wall Street is demanding its share of the bounty before it's over. One of the things you write is that after these kind of innovative companies got in there and were able to pioneer this new way of drilling, then everybody wanted to get in on it. Shell became the hotels area of the oil industry. Air attracted capital from Wall Street back in this pioneers, the early cowboys, but then everyone figured out this is the place to be. So very quickly, Chevron have had properties in the Permian for many, many years, as long as 75 years ago, they never solved the accurate, but they kept their accuracy on their books. Basically thinking that their value was pretty much zero. And all the signs they were like, hello and second. We online alongside where these other guys are producing a lot. We can't do that. So big oil kind of figure out, well, let's join the revolution. And that's where Chevron has started doing it. We started doing it and then ultimately Exxon also arrived there and also joined the shale revolution. To the point that you look at what action is doing today, the Permian West Texas is really where they are drilling the most and they're putting quite a lot of their capital at play. Here we're talking about one of the drawbacks of this shale revolution was how much money it took to drill these wells and that started causing a lot of attention between the companies and the investors in those companies. To understand that tension, I went to Midland, Texas. That is a relatively small town population about 100,000 people. And as actually where George Bush senior sets all and created his first oil business before many years later, went into politics and finally became the president of the United States. And you can see a Midland, there is a desire to make money for an oil. That's the problem there is the pressure to make profit. The shell revolution was fantastic for the United States as a whole. The economy benefited, but investors lost a lot of money. The companies needed to reinvest so much of their profits to keep up with that threat meal of drilling wells and drilling wells to increase production at times very early days they were putting back into drilling 50% of their profits that went up to 80% that went up to a 100% and very soon they were borrowing money because they needed to reinvest a 150% of their profits to continue drilling. And for a few years, Wallace was happy with that. It was similar to the technology industry. You put money early, you take the losses because you want to grow. Do I expect it at some point, you achieve a critical mass and then you don't need to grow that much, and you can start making money. But that never really happened with shale. All the time, the companies needed to reinvest a lot of money and drill more and keep losing money. So at some point, what industry had said in office enough, it was held by the fact that oil prices collapse during the pandemic and then the industry went into a massive restructuring. Companies abandoned these targets of growing and growing and they focused on returning money to shareholders. And drilling has come down massively in West Texas and across the United States. Prices for oil remain quite high by historical standards. It's still 70 to $75 a barrel, but drilling has come down significantly and is about half of what used to

"Minutes from the Federal Reserve's latest meeting for potential signs at the Central Bank may slow its pace of interest rate increases. Just under 60 minutes to go until we get those meeting minutes at Steve dweck is chief investment officer at Flo bank. And we've had so many pet sneakers come out since the meeting with very hawkish were mostly hawkish comments. We know there was a slightly more dovish meeting and a more hawkish Powell press conference. I think at this point, investors are looking at it because it's the last big data before the Thanksgiving weekend, but I don't think we're going to get that many big surprises from today. And right now we have got the ten year yielding 3.73% with the two year 4.49% spot gold up two tenths of 1% 1743 the ounce, while West Texas and media crew down 4.2%, now with a 77 handle 77 57 on WTI. Brent, the global benchmark, 84 81 down today by 4%, so the Dow the S&P nesta hall trading mixed right now after earnings, dear forecast record profit for next year, a soaring farm income keeps stoking tractor demand while supply, chain constraints ease. Right now, deer and company shares they're running higher up by about 4.8%. Nordstrom after earnings, dropping now by just about 5.8%, Nordstrom says higher discounts are hurting profitability at its upscale department stores and discount chain. It is now one O two on Wall Street. That means it's time for the market drivers report with a focus on American depositary receipts. And here's Abigail too little. Thank you, Charlie, and let's start out with a big laggard, which is credit speech this ADR banking ADR is down more than 7% on the announcement of significant layoffs for the company plus they saw $88 billion in outflows as confidence has slumped in the bank. They also are taking a look at the possibility of a $1.6 billion loss. So Credit Suisse that ADR down about 7%. Other European banks, though, about flat. We have UBS up about three tenths of 1% and a UK bank Lloyd's group. It is up just slightly that ADR, so Credit Suisse woes very much contained to that bank. As for China tech, we've had lots of volatility in recent weeks and it continues today for a bit of a mixed picture overall up more than 1%, one outperformer, the EV company, that ADR, neo, up 3.6%, net is up 1.4% Alibaba up 1.8%. Taiwan Semiconductor on the other hand though, Charlie, down about three quarters of 1% and oil interestingly, oil related companies BP and Petrobras, along with oil, both lower those ADRs down three tenths of 1% and 1% respectively Charlie. Okay, we thank you very much. Have a great Thanksgiving holiday, Abigail, do a little keeping track

"Your finger on. The mood has shifted at least. You've seen a lot of sort of pieces of legislation stall at the federal level in Congress. Various degrees of government. Does that sort of put the onus then on corporations, at least when we're talking about women in their corporate lives? To try to make things better. Could this be used sort of as a recruiting tool? I think it has for a long time. I mean, you know, when you look at the statistic, I think it's like 23% of workers in the U.S. have access to paid parental leave, almost all of those workers are white collar workers. And so if you are a company, if you're in tech, finance, anything where you are competing for talent. There's a reason why companies in recent years have expanded their paid leave policies is because it's, it makes them more attractive. The issue is that there's not a trickle down effect. You know, we're still at that under a quarter of workers. The percentage of low wage workers who get any sort of leap at all is, I don't know what the updated number is, but as of last year, it was less than 10%. I think it was 9%. And so yes, and no, I think, is the answer to that because I got the question is sort of like who are you talking about when you ask that question? Claire, you spent a good portion of time over the last few months dedicated to a feature that's in the current issue of Bloomberg businessweek magazine. It's all about part of West Texas that's become a very dangerous place to be pregnant and how it's getting in even scarier there. Texas leads the U.S. in maternity ward closures. What did you find in your visit to West Texas? Yeah, so I came to the story because I kept reading all of these small local stories and local papers all over the country about hospitals closing their maternity wards. And I thought, how can you close a maternity ward? Doesn't every hospital need to be able to deliver babies? And I looked into it further and Texas is sort of like the epitome of the problem. And within Texas, the epitome of the problem there is this town called Alpine, which is in West Texas, truly in the middle of nowhere. I mean, three and a half hours, I think from El Paso 5 hours from San Antonio. And we're not talking driving on an expressway type of road. This is like a highway with no rest stops. And it's the only hospital within a 12,000 square mile area that delivers babies. And so many nurses burnt out and quit during the pandemic that it is, I think now is open about 5 days a week, but for the majority of the past year, it's been only able to deliver babies three days a week, which if you know anything about having a kid, they don't arrive on schedule, you can't say. I'll just skip birth on Tuesday then, I guess that's fine. You know, women do try to schedule induction to try to work around that, but even that is not working. And because the access to prenatal care is also incredibly low, what was being the only hospital. They have a lot of what are called preterm birth or babies born really early. And they need access to nicu or needle neonatal intensive care unit and Big Ben doesn't have one. And so they have to medevac. These babies out to larger hospitals. "288 The ten year is down 1.1% with a yield of 2.55% West Texas intermediate crude oil is currently down a half a percent at one O two 80 for barrel That is a Bloomberg business flash I'm Greg Jarrett Now more balance of power with David Westin right here on Bloomberg radio This is about to power on Bloomberg television or radio I'm David west and well judge kataja Brown Jackson to another step toward the Supreme Court as we passed out of committee and the judiciary Senate Judiciary Committee And we welcome now a real authority on the history of the Supreme Court She's Barbara Perry Professor and director of presidential studies at the University of Virginia's Miller center So thank you so much professor for being back with us Put this in historical perspective It is the first black woman as by the way President Biden promised he would do He did So for all those people who say politicians don't keep their promises this is one that he certainly did keep running in the primary in the South Carolina primary for the nomination of his party He said that he would put the first black woman on the Supreme Court and that's just about to happen So good for him and good for her And good for the court I've written a piece for the hill that says the Supreme Court should look like the United States And I believe in that I believe that in order to maintain its legitimacy it doesn't mean that people who are representative and an active way as we think of people in Congress will both the way we want them to vote but at least it looks like it's more than just white males populating the courts She will be the 116th member of the court and its history and most of those have been white males So it's good to see some diversity Barbara how do you put it in historical context Am I going back to for example I think of Sandra Day O'Connor being the first woman to see the Supreme Court And goodness knows thurgood Marshall the first black lawyer to be on the Supreme Court How do you rate this in this How does it change the court Well I rated in a book that I wrote on religion race and gender and appointments to the court And actually president is going all the way back to George Washington wanted to make the court representative in terms of geography and regions of the country But in terms of these personal characteristics religion race gender that actually goes back in terms of religion to the late 1800s when the first Catholic was put on the bench And in terms of actually wanting to put a Catholic on actually roger taney was the first to be put on in the 1830s as chief justice by Andrew Jackson But in terms of a Catholic seat developing as waves of immigrants came to this country Catholics Jewish immigrants So 1916 the first two is justice Louis Brandeis Then as you said thurgood Marshall the first black member Sandra Day O'Connor how well I remember being so proud and honored in 1981 when Ronald Reagan put her on the bench justice Sotomayor the first Hispanic justice So what does it mean It means that again the court will look a little bit more legitimate I think in the eyes of the American people because they will see people who look like them and have their backgrounds on the highest tribunal in the land One of the things that is different than at least in recent history now than ever is how contentious these nomination and confirmation processes are I click for justice bow and the vote was something like 82 to three back in those days and I think his hearing was about an hour and a half long It doesn't work that way anymore What has happened to that process can it ever be retrieved if I can put it that way betraying my prejudice Yes I would I will betray my prejudice as well I'd like it to be retrieved that it would be based on merit and that would be intellectual merit judicial experience judicial temperament the ability to write well and work and play well with others It used to be that way that people on the opposite side of the aisle would vote for justices They didn't necessarily agree with ideologically but they thought that they were meritorious and they were qualified to sit on the bench That has Gone with the Wind and I would say until we can get rid of the severe polarization that we have in this country and I don't look for that to happen anytime soon The court and vacancies on the court and fights over those vacancies are going to reflect the polarization and the severe polarization that we see now One more And I think it's perhaps a tricky one You worked up there at the Supreme Court You know the way it operates at least when it operates well How is the Supreme Court in the way it functions being affected by this hyper partisanship I know that it's supposed to be isolated from politics but it's not that far away from the Senate chamber where these hearings were being had They can't be entirely immune from knowing how political this has become Well they can not be in me from it but I like to think of it as the marble temple that beautiful beautiful building that you worked in up on Capitol Hill It is a beautiful marble construct And it's a bit like a monastery or a convict that is that once they get through the difficulties as one would go through a process to become a priest or a nun and then go into that setting then they're all together and justice Thomas has said for all of the problems he faced in coming into that court He always says people were so welcoming to him there Both his colleagues and those who work at the court So I always use the example that before they go out on the bench for oral argument They shake hands with each other And I think that's a great symbol and we could use more of that collegiality could we and all of our politics Yes I think that's fair to say Barbara it's always such a pleasure to have you on these topics It's really helpful That's Barbara Perry of the University of Virginia Miller center Coming up Elon Musk's stake in Twitter isn't looking so passive today This is bounce a power on Bloomberg television and on radio Why get your Jamie's log progressive The Harrington's backyard day four two 18 a.m. I've been camping outside of the Harrington house for four days now proving that progressive has 24/7 protection Mister Hanks says I don't need to do this since progressive protects 24/7 It's a pretty easy concept to grasp But I'm gonna stay improve my point.

"Gold down two tenths of 1% down four 89 the ounce to 1917 crude West Texas intermediate down 8 tenths one O 5 11 apparel I'm Charlie powder That is a Bloomberg business flash All right Charlie thanks Well the Ukraine and Russia failing to clinch a ceasefire and talks that ended in Istanbul on Tuesday today Moscow saying it will reduce military operations in areas where its forces are being pushed back calling for security guarantees from the EU and NATO members a lot going on So let's get to it Joining us right now is retired major general masten Robson He is geopolitical intelligence adviser to the academy's advisory board and he served over 34 years on active duty in the U.S. Marine Corps and was in more than 60 countries He is on the phone in South Carolina Also with us is Bloomberg political news director for Bloomberg radio and TV Jodi Schneider major Robson with the academy securities advisory board as we said Jody let's start with you headlines optimism We saw it play out in the markets a little bit What do we really know Yeah does the markets for optimistic equity and oil markets It seemed that they were maybe a little bit trying to get excited about something that maybe isn't quite there There were talks today in Istanbul They ended without a ceasefire without Russia really committing to much saying it's cutting back forces in Kyiv but they're losing there So they're already sort of on the retreat there They haven't said anything about the other areas where they have been advancing And they haven't said anything about the major things on the table withdrawal ceasefire What happens next Any security kinds of guarantees the things that Ukraine has been seeking and anything about NATO and anything that the west has been seeking So it really does seem like it's the start of talks There's talk about a pathway to Putin and zelensky meeting But again nothing concrete So they didn't go badly but there wasn't a lot that you could take away from them And I think the markets were just optimistic on the fact that they're going somewhere maybe really slowly Major general come on in here and weigh in on this and give us your reaction to seeing this news that at least here in the United States crossed overnight Is it a reason for optimism Economically or military militarily It's definitely not up to this And I think we need to be clear of terms People never say he's withdrawing What he'll say is he's attacking a new direction He's refocusing his campaign which I think is what he's doing It's a disaster for him to go back home without a win If you buy into the idea that Putin's long-term end goal now he's a president for life and basically has done everything he can do Wealthy What he really wants to elevate Russia to the world stage once again And he can't do that without some sort of bringing something home So in the current campaign I think that he'll continue to inflict damage on the city to the west in the north Most of the indirect fire and air because he can't if he lets go of that he loses that pressure he's putting everybody loses that as part of the bargaining of I will stop if I get something in return I think he'll consolidate campaign He'll move it to a more limited objective in the Donbass And keep in mind that there really are only three options Putin has He quipped and I don't think any of us think he's going to do that He escalates and we know the warning that when we found an offering to negotiation that allows both sides to be able to clean something but most importantly Putin's got to be able to claim something he's achieved with this And if you fast forward to the end of the year at the end of two years the end of the month whenever this comes to a peaceful resolution or an off ramp who's going to have to ask some explanation when the forces come back to Russia without equipment and without a lot of soldiers who are dead or that are wounded as to was this worth it what did we get So what does win look like for Putin is a good starting point for how do we find an off ramp decrease negotiation room to be able to bring a settlement Major general this is Jodi Schneider What does that off ramp What could that off ramp look like What are the potentials there Because as you pointed out there's fairly limited options here Yeah and I'd like to say it's box seats that professional athletics games here in the United States That's probably not going to do it But what we've heard president zelensky talk about He's mentioned neutrality He's mentioned the plausibility of is there some agreement with Crimea that's more official He's mentioned the Donbass And I think those are the three that are most likely to be on the table Is Putin willing to accept a neutrality agreement It's official in this a state driven in the ground that certainly gives him what he said he wanted which is Ukraine never becomes part of NATO They are a neutral If desi does he get crop here as an official part of the Russian confederation That's probably a plausible something on the table to negotiate over Donbass will be harder It will want something hard in Donbass that shows it was worth his time And zelensky is going to want independence for Donbass And that's really where I think it'll boil down to the negotiation of how do you sweeten the pot for Putin and how do you sweeten the pot for zelensky to be able to come up with an agreement I have a hard time seeing where we're going to pressure him economically to make a decision right now General Robson if you were advising President Biden and current military forces have things changed at least for the media medium term in terms of how the world and certainly NATO and the United States will look at Russia going forward is Russia going to be secluded because of this Is there no way of kind of going back at least like I said in the short and medium term Because there's no way of going back to where we were but that doesn't mean it's not a place to go that could be positive for everybody These types of things certainly create scars and create memories And they create problems In regard to President Biden I think he's done what he can do short of trying to keep this from escalating And that's what his primary objective is How do we do something to push pressure on Putin without escalation Putin on the other hand you know has a different metric of what he wants So my advice President Biden is probably rallied the world unbelievably successfully that nobody thought the plausible at this point is unified or at least Russia has unified Putin's unified NATO he's unified the EU He's unified the world against the economically None of which I think he thought was plausible early on when he said We got to run Thank you so much General master and Robson and of course our Jodi Schneider here at Bloomberg You are listening to Bloomberg radio Progressive presents Forrest metaphors about bundling your home and Sonia so to my order was much more direct quote saying quote a majority of justices have opted to bury their heads in the sand. She goes on to say it cannot be the case that a state can evade federal judicial scrutiny. By outsourcing the enforcement of unconstitutional laws to its citizenry with us again. I kneel cocktail department of justice veteran and former acting solicitor general during the obama administration. He argued dozens of cases before the united states supreme court. Neil good to see you. Thank you for being with us. We need your clarity on this. What did chief justice john roberts in describing this as unusual and unprecedented the bottom line is the supreme court basically gave a thumbs up to the overruling of roe versus wade so abortion clinics as of yesterday in texas are essentially closed to all patients. And what the court west texas yesterday can be enacted tomorrow in other states in deed will other states Code already Said they're gonna try to enact such legislation and so with the chief justice was referring to was. "This morning in a remote part of the west texas desert the world richest man amazon founder. Jeff bezos plans to take off for a trip to space. It's the first space flight with passengers on board for his company. blue origin. Now if you were paying attention nine days ago another billionaire. Richard branson took a flight to space with his company virgin. Galactic bezos is flight will be a little different in how it launches and where the passengers will go. But the difference is don't stop there. They extend to the goals and ambitions of both companies and to discuss that. We have a reporter mike. Berg who covers the business of space for the wall street journal back on the show. I'm mike thanks for joining us again so nine days ago you were in new mexico watching the virgin galactic flight with richard branson launch. Now you're in texas for the blue origin launch. What are some of the differences you expect to see when this flight takes off. Yeah i mean the biggest difference just sort of visually blue origin uses a rocket to get the space. We're going to see literally the new scheffer rocket flare up into at very high speeds into space. And then you know we won't see this but a capsule detach and float into space and then the rocket will return to the launch pad. Virgin galactic of course uses a different method. They've got a kind high-flying airplane that flies up. You know the way you would see at an airport and the space craft the virgin galactic spacecraft attached to the rocket detaches at about forty five thousand feet and then it sort of rockets up into space from there. So you'll literally see the

Oil Prices Extend Gains After OPEC+ Talks Fail

"Well it it's standoff. Interesting choice of words Let me explain. What's going on here to the best of my ability in april of last year opec and its allies who together are known as opec plus or cartel all forgot choice. Awards there yeah. Yeah opec plus reduced its oil production by ten million barrels a day to support prices as demand dropped through the floor. A man demand dropped because of the worldwide pandemic well with demand rising now this year. Prices have risen. Well well over fifty percent. I believe the latest number. I've seen as fifty seven percent and now in recent days in an effort to curb that spike in oil prices. The opec plus group began discussions just last week to raise production by four hundred thousand barrels a month from august through december that would raise production by two million barrels. Those talks fell apart over the weekend. The opec secretary general set only only. The date of the next meeting will be decided. In due course kind of the equivalent of exactly exactly and oil prices continued to rise west texas intermediate this morning at seventy four dollars. Seventy five cents. A barrel brent crude at seven the world benchmark brent crude at seventy six dollars and a penny of barrel oil prices have risen to a six-year high as gail said earlier and with that energy stocks including shares of like occidental pete and conaco phillips they are higher as

I'm excited to be talking some e Sports specifically some fee for today. Yeah, definitely. Thanks for having me so off top favorite FIFA version go all FIFA version. There's so many I mean I've been playing fevers such a long time ever since the World Cup 1998. I would say be for 17 honestly for several reasons. I like the gameplay and I also like that fever because that's what everything sort of started right on so, I mean not not to say that the other FIFA's aren't as good. Let's be very clear about that. Right? Yeah for sure. There's several pieces that I really do like it was a tough decision. I mean it took a while to think of all the FIFA's I mean 16-15 was a really really good. The thing is though. I mean FIFA changes every single FIFA some people don't believe this but it really does change. Whole lot in terms of the gameplay mechanics what works what doesn't work the way the players move just so many little details that ultimately change the game. So, yeah, it's just it's just interesting people like certain FIFA's While others don't like some FIFA's well forgetting about fever first second, right? You actually were pursuing a career as a professional footballer write soccer player, You literally sustained an injury that stopped you from playing for not stopping employment is kind of stunted that that career path for you a little bit more and So you you're recovering your your home away from from actual soccer for a bit and you start picking up FIFA more and more and that leads you down this path towards becoming I mean what you are now, you're just awesome see from the optional Caster. I mean this reads like an Esports Hallmark movie, right? This is crazy. Exactly. Yeah, so I have a big story a big testimony in the way of how I got here. I never expected it. This all stems back from them. I would have played soccer with FC Dallas not at the virtual pitch. Just yeah in real life. I was part of the academy program development program as a youngster. Texas Faces Water Shortage as Many Are Still Without Power

"Texas close to five hundred thousand people are still without power which is actually an improvement from earlier this week except that the power crisis has led to a water crisis and now millions of texans are under boil orders to make their water drinkable. Do either of you know anybody in texas. Who's having to deal with us. Yeah yeah. I got friends in texas. I've been texting them today of gotten through to one so far. This is there okay. They got some power and water. My main takeaway is like you know. These are the things that we have to prepare for because climate change. That's a great example of what is happening now. I know you can't maybe pin that particular storm on climate change but climate is changing. And we're having severe weather events and we have to get ready for this. I mean i'm from vietnam and this is things that happened my country. I'd never imagined. I would see something like the country will be so when paired with texas will be so unprepared. It's just mind boggling. I don't know if you guys have heard of pin boy. He is the mayor of colorado city in west texas. Who would that air. We're asking for assistance. Winter Storm Leaves Many In Texas Without Power And Water

"Texas is paying the price. But the rest of us. We are learning something about the oil market in this economy from american public media this is marketplace in los angeles. I'm kai ryssdal. It is wednesday today the seventeenth day of february. Good as always to have you along everybody. We talked yesterday. For a bit about the vagaries of the texas energy market which along with the cold and the snow and the ice has left millions of people. Three at least more than that probably. That's millions of course without power and the thing is that even after the weather starts improving eventually the effects of this now three day long crisis are likely to linger and to be felt far beyond the lone star state. That's partly because of how the oil market works or in. Some cases doesn't marketplace adjusted. Ho gets going when the oil supply chain for as it should oil gets pumped out of the ground truck door pipe to a refinery and transformed into products including gasoline diesel and jet fuel. All of these your experience some type of disruption because of the weather. That's matt smith. Director of commodity. Research clipper data which tracks the oil supply chain. He says right now. Oil just isn't getting pumped out of the ground refineries or shutdown and companies aren't exporting barrels. Out of the gulf coast. We're seeing a number that he's different pull such is houston coppola's christie being closed the gulf coast handles roughly half of the country's oil refining capacity. That means the effects of the extreme cold will ripple even further down the supply chain throughout the us says michael weber and energy professor at the university of texas in jet fuel. Atlanta depends on a refinery in east texas which depends on oil production in west texas when it comes to gasoline refineries have a certain amount stored up that trucks can deliver to retail gas stations. For now that's because earlier this month. Gasoline supplies relatively normal levels but energy. Professor tom sang at the university of tulsa says if they're not replenished the question becomes okay along with these refineries to be shut down and how much how many days it supplied is. This actually represents in the meantime prices of oil and gas futures have started rising. Sang says that means all of us could soon start paying more to. I would expect that. Certainly electric bills and natural gas bills are gonna see. Spikes sang says that might be further down the line for the rest of the country. But it's already affecting the millions of texans needing heating oil

"More big fan of science fiction right and who's happened and science fiction has is not about the future. It's about the now through different lens. And i get very frustrated with a lot of distance stories. You know the stories that are bout was miserable. The end times it's going to be this So when i look at the world. I see a lot of problems. You see a lot of harshness. Souci lot of this union and and disorder in distress. And and i thought often about the fact we don't have community places to have real exchanges and i've insert myself into those into those conversations. You know where. I don't agree with what they're saying. But i try to find ways sometimes to to sort of say. Hey i here. You're saying book. Let's actually have a dialogue about. Let's let's find some commonality and so far. I've walked away generally unscathed you know. There's there's usually resistance what are you doing. Why bother me but if you approach it the right way you actually find. Maybe not agreement at the dinner. You haven't swayed somebody else over but you've actually found a place to have a conversation and maybe you're nodding your head a little bit about what they're saying and maybe they're actually nodding in return which we don't get otherwise we've lost so many of these and replace them with memes and news feeds and mistakenly think that those actually activate that commonality at first impression of his resume it can be assumed. He's a man driven by list of temporal accomplishments. Yet as he shares of who he is and as we take the chapters of his introduction. It's easy to see the humility that resides within him with the mind that but what's to come thinker. He not only ponders of the world in which we're living but imagines the world where walking into he recalls. Simple moment years ago when i work more directly and in comic books and and i would get invited to stores signings autograph sessions instead of things and i got invited to this one in west texas think it was west texas this texas definitely somewhere texas big place and and you know was all full of myself and went to the store and nobody showed. Nobody like nobody cared. That i was there so i sat there for hours. Stacks of whatever it was assigned except for this one. Kit showed up and young. He had a couple of stories and maybe illustrations he had done. And i had nothing else to do so i just talked to the kid. Most of the day gave him pointers joked with them. This that and the other thing didn't think twice about it. And i had a driver that day because it was so far away west texas. The driver was sitting there that whole time. And we got back in the car at the end of the day and the driver turned to me. And i wasn't thinking about any of this and he said that kid will never forget this day for the rest of his life and as a pretty talking about you know he was making the point the fact i had given that kid attention and encouraged his doing but i had an intended. It wasn't like i was leaning into it but sometimes it's those at those things that maybe are just small gestures. You don't even think about but they they can make a hopefully they do make an impotent and they add up over time as opposed to well. I'm gonna do this big thing and speak programs big. Whenever baby steps and commonality he suggests speaks of how small or large the wakes of even our smallest gestures can radiate asks us to not get so caught up in our own accomplishments disappointments that we don't take time to truly see those around us. Perhaps he is gently challenging us giving us reason to look over the walls of a plausible dystopia future and as he does he releases. Each of us sincerely consider the links that bind us. I think that there's an inherent need for connection. And you owe it to yourself to discover that and if you can do that on your own through introspection or finding a philosophy finding a faith some type of therapy. If that's what's necessary cracked the code on yourself at no matter what point or stage you on your life. Well i'm fifty. whatever. I'm i'm past the point of doing that or i'm twenty. I'll still figure it out on my own home. Take the time to figure it out. You owe it to yourself and it's okay to be selfish in that way being separate is not worth it. Yes he has achieved a degree of success yet. When he speaks of his priorities he mentions no quest for wealth even admits his work is secondary to what he feels most important simply. His role was a loving father as a caring husband as a good friend and as a contributing citizen to this world in which we share so it is as we take a pause to absorb the voice of today's stranger. Now friend dan. My we open our hearts minds and actions pass any barriers. That just might be of our own making back to dan. I would say ask the person next to you. What matters to the most because when you understand that about somebody else you see yourself more clearly and then you. You understand them better. I think if we understand that and the answer is honest if we listen we truly listen. Go beyond the go beyond. I can't understand that now. There are all these factors these burdens that we carry. And it's hard to think about the other and not just within yourself. And i think every one of us can find something relatable and that's what we should aspire to

The judge acknowledged the filter snafu was a fun moment in a testament to how everybody's doing their best to make sure the judicial system continues work during the pandemic, and he says everybody who dealt with the problem including the quote catty attorney Handled handled it.
