No kidding: California overtime law threatens use of grazing goats to prevent wildfires
"And overtime law in California could threaten the use of grazing goats to prevent wildfires. The park supervisor in West Sacramento, Jason Pablo, uses hundreds of goats to munch on long blades of yellow grass in the city. Essentially, mow those down to reduce the fire risk for the upcoming dry season. But new state labor regulations in California are making it more expensive for goat grazing services like Tim Aerosmith's company to operate. We can not fix the current legislation. We will be forced to sell these goats to slaughter and to the option yards. And we'll be forced out of business and probably filed for bankruptcy. Goat herders would be subject to the same labor laws as other farm workers. Hundreds of millions of dollars has been spent on putting out fires, very little has been spent on fire prevention. The changes at goat grazing workers would be entitled to overtime. I'm Ed Donahue.

Good afternoon. Welcome to the conversation. Sure, thanks for holding on. Thank you. I want to point out that it's things like Paul Potts. Happening, 30 years after Hitler 25 years after Hitler swept out over a third of the population and communism Killed over 100 million people, and it's still appealing to people. Yeah. Whereas fascism doesn't mean in reality is we have forgotten the lesson. We've said all we're never gonna do fascism again. But then they say, Oh, communism seems fine. And that's I think, honestly, my bigger concern is right now that people think Oh, fascist Marxism Communism Marxism. Isn't that bad? Ignoring the story history of well and by the way, you don't have to go back a substantial period of time. You could look in the real world in virtually real time to see how Different systems have worked and where they failed dramatically and look at the the flight from those other nations that have had people living out of that kind of rule. So your point's well taken. I think the study of the everything even even if you look at people's lives, just nothing is as dramatic is what we're talking about here, but simply looking at looking at decisions that people have made the courses of action that they have taken that have worked out well. Mistake's quite honestly can be the most valuable lesson. That we can use in terms of educating ourselves to learn from mistakes. The most efficient way to learn from mistakes is to study the mistakes of others, because that puts us in a position where you don't have to do endure the harm. That that, frankly typically comes from significant mistakes, But you can avoid the the repeat of those mistakes and I find it very ironically, appreciate the call very much girl. I find it ironic that we find ourselves today and very contemporary Real times. You have a set of circumstances in the Middle East. You have a Hamas who is actively Assaulting Israel and Israel who's our ally? Eyes is moving, obviously unambiguously to protect themselves. They're not attacking as civilians. They're going after the forces that bring harm to them. And I see a big divide in this country, especially among politicians who seemed t not be able to grasp the concept that it looks very much to me as though our allies in Israel are virtually live heat over the overly simplify this But their world is kind of like a environment in which you have neighbors lobbing Molotov cocktails your way. And you're expected to just take it. They have to be bold. They have no choice but to be bold. It's a tiny state. It's the population is about that of Los Angeles County. And S O. They are surrounded by people who want their lives to end want their lifestyle, their beliefs, their values their heritage, their religion to stop. I? Ironically, we get major pushback when we study. The Holocaust study that the Nazi Germany period and because it does have rough edges on it, it could be offensive to people understand that The same time in very real sense. Real time. We have people who are resisting the idea of the United States supporting our ally. And I find that very, very difficult to comprehend their cases. There's a case in Los Angeles last night very near the Beverly Hills West Hollywood city limits where you had people out dining at an outdoor venue. People came by and asked him if they were Jewish when they acknowledge yes, they were. They were subjected Tomo to an element of terrorist. Fortunately, nobody was injured. But why? Why we have a society in which we cannot seemingly except in some corners, the fundamental truth of history. The same time not have the courage to stand up against people who seek to bring harm to two innocent people in the case of Israel, T to civilians to women and Children who have nothing to do. With the capacity to engage in war. That's not what it's all about. So the world is a very complicated place. And if, as we lose our ability, we lose our Our grip on the idea of being able to accept the truth of history. That's why when this critical race theory and 16 19 project comes up I think it's very important that people have a fundamental understanding of what that does, and I would never support the notion of putting a glossy finish on everything that is American history. I don't support that. For a moment. We have to be true. We have to be candid. About what where we've made horrific mistakes in the past where we've done very bad things. Where we have viewed the world and viewed human beings that make up the world and less than appropriate terms. Then you also have to look at what we've done. Since that time we've worked towards making that go away, resolving that problem and evolving to a tremendous place since then, and that's it for me is you can tell by the sound of music but stick around because you've got the lovely and talented Kitty O'Neil coming up next with the afternoon news. For me, it was unbearable because I was so sensitive that smoke That I start to swell up like it's Sinus infections and going outside was intolerable. The songs did end up moving, but not in the West. They settled on northern New England and a house in a rural town at the foot of New Hampshire's White Mountains. Doug says they call themselves climate migrants. We had the idea that not necessarily that we were going to a place that would be forever and touched by climate change. But that we were getting out of a bad climate situation that was only likely to get worse. Research suggests that climate related hazards could soon play a role in prompting millions of Americans and people worldwide to relocate. Eulogy Bodies studies. This at Portland State University in Oregon, in prominence might be the new normal for many of us and so the idea that you know you have to leave in one place forever. I think people have to forget that. But she says, All this moving around can make people more resilient and if the places that will receive them can be resilient and flexible, too. They might just benefit from it. Well, we've talked about climate migration. It usually comes up within the context of the jobs that we just can't feel Sarah Marshall and his community development director in national in New Hampshire. It's already seen. It's Puerto Rican population grow after Hurricane Maria and it expects more climate migrants from Boston and other nearby coastal areas. I think the city is well positioned with the infrastructure we already have. And our location that is very desirable. By some measures. Nationals region could be an ideal climate haven. It's getting warmer but doesn't face the existential threats of, say, Florida or California. Northern New England is also one of the oldest and widest parts of the country and has struggled with population loss. It's hard to predict the scale and timing of climate migration and an influx of newcomers during the current pandemic is showing just how disruptive unplanned growth can be. So Marcia and says national is keeping migration and other climate impacts in mind while tackling existing problems with affordable housing and overstretched infrastructure to ensure that what we are building is sustainable. We also have to be smarter about what we do have whether or not the climate migrants come, she says. Nashua is making improvements that will benefit everyone for NPR news. I'm Annie Ropeik. Another byproduct of all that is oil. I was looking at oil today. Oil hit $50 a barrel about a half hour ago for the first time since February. You'll recall back in April. Oil futures actually went negative. How did they go? Negative. Well, because when, when you own oil futures and they mature, you have to take delivery of that oil. If you've got nowhere to put that oil, you're gonna pay someone to take it off your hands. So, uh, but but it's been ah, Bumpy ride for oil obviously going negative in April now hitting $50 a barrel once again and it's hitting those levels because of the belief that people Are beginning to drive and fly Maura and that lonely continue as hopefully the vaccine rules out at a quicker pace. Turning Your Passion Into Sustainable Work with Zachariah Moreno
"Hello welcome to go bam good morning. We're actually doing this during coffee. Time my favorite time of day. Thank you for having me. Thank you for coming on so zach. Tell us who you are. What's your heritage where you come from. I'm a mexican. American here in california oakland more specifically from the central valley of california grew up can actually west sacramento. You know went to school. They're pretty normal. Giant mexican family in california and Always had a love for creativity and art and different forms of expressing the that creativity so throughout my journey. That has come to life in a couple of different. Mediums started in kind of ink on paper transition to acrylic on canvas. art shows. Some awards wanted to do that professionally struggled to find a way to actually passion into sustainable work. Glad i saw that problem as early as i did. But then you know it always had an affinity for technology because of my my father's background been privileged to To be exposed to some technology pretty pretty early on and then i realized i could combine those two things together and make artwork and creativity with technology with squad. Cast is kind of the most recent body of that and that's actually another level of helping others be creative and connect and be creative with each other with their guests to record podcast interviews. That sound awesome from anywhere in the world. They do okay. So we're gonna pack all that story because this is what we do. So you're mexican american. Are you first generation. Second third generation. Right hey do how is that. I'm i yeah. I've actually thought about you know. My grandparents were barely born in the united states. A believe their family crossed the border into texas when they were like. I think my grandpa was actually. My grandmother was actually pregnant with him. when she came to america and i believe my grandma was a little girl when they crossed over into texas so work their way over to california and my grandpa was very fortunate to have an uncle who owned some farmland essentially in in the central valley here in in yolo county. They were farmworkers. The added bonus that he had is that his uncle rufus. I've never really gotten this full story. But he was able to own his own farm so he of course worked with farmworkers. They were out there in the field with them every day. My grandma grandpa learned to drive was he was super young was driving people back and forth from the fields and he's got gnarly scars all over his legs from like being out in in the different agricultural environments and walking around out there all day you know really exposed to that lifestyle and then became a sheriff's officer and later most of his career. He was a one of the best saw filers on the west coast. That's not a job really anymore. What is it at the time. These giant lumber companies would need these giant saw blades to take the raw number that they would bring in kind of millet down into usable lumber. So my grandpa started out in the yard stacking green lumber which is full of water. So it's incredibly woods heavy anyway but when it's fresh like that it's incredibly heavy so i'm sure he was pretty ripped back then he still is. He's in his nineties now. He's my favorite person and worked his way up to I guess it's kind of an apprentice situation where studied under somebody. He can take a piece of metal and make a giant saab laid out of it and Make that saw blade last for a very long time. And i guess there's very few people who can do that. He was very skilled skilled craftsman still to this day. Does a lot of woodworking and he's ninety nine only has he taught you how to make a late. He's taught me like on paper and shown me. He has a workshop that i helped build and we built in his backyard woodworking shop. And so does my dad. So this is what i mean about like creativity and craftsmanship. I think it goes very deep like my grandpa's. He's not a like a graphic artist. He's a very skilled technical drawing kind of pre autocad so he was What i would say is the first generation and my grandma you know to. That's how they match. She was one of the farm workers on his uncle's farm.

California Businesses Face Another Round of Blackouts
"A fire in Sonoma's county sparked on Wednesday has grown quickly fueled by strong winds and dry conditions forcing the evacuation of hundreds of residents in northern California the fire is now burning over ten thousand acres and threatens to endanger area ranches and wineries the heightened risk of fire has also forced California Utility PG and e. to begin another round of blackouts the utility says it will cut power to one hundred seventy nine Zain customers that's far fewer than the seven hundred fifty thousand whose power was cut in the last wave of blackouts earlier this month but residents and businesses are struggling our Jim Carlton checked in with some of them and joins me now from San Francisco so jim when we think of businesses that might be most impacted by these blackouts. I think obviously people in the food business come to mind restaurants that have to make sure they have fresh food and then grocery stores who have to ensure that it's stored properly but you spoke to us their businesses ranging all over the map including art galleries tell us what you heard from small businesses amid these blackouts you come across the board they're talking about pretty a surprising amount of losses I talked to a custom framing gallery in California and that's kind of a cute tourist town on on the way to Lake Tahoe surrounded by beautiful trees pine trees and in the summer the shops are filled with tourists and whatnot and also in the winter when skiers went up and I talked to Daniel Anderson who owns pop art custom gallery in he said that they lost during the shutdown two thousand dollars a day and lost business and not only that but also lost you know the some of these people won't give referrals so it's kind of lost potential businesses well and so in all he lost about eight thousand dollars so as a pretty significant blow to him and what are you hearing from restaurants and people in the food business about efforts to preserve their product accent what they're struggling with y'all so there's another grocery of cold mill creek grocery and they had problems last a lot of groceries. I think the California Grocers Association estimated that the losses of something like three hundred dollars to one thousand dollars per day on the small markets you know lost produce and whatnot there's actually a company that the new leaf community markets in Santa Cruz County they have portable refrigerated trucks and they would go around and try to do you know save as much merchandise as they could but I mean so really I mean the groceries though have a very hard time because they have so many items comes in so many perishables and the bigger chains railly's is a big chain out of West Sacramento they have generators you'll safeway they have writers about these small mom and pops they may have a generator but might not be big enough to really absorb the impact Jim overall our business owner's feeling amid what might become a new normal for them. PGE has said it plans to continue doing these blackouts win high winds become a risk they are super angry I mean I mean I've heard this from the residents but I mean the the businesses are just like you know I mean the first shutdown was hard enough on them and you know and get that they don't want I mean I mean of course it's preferable to a wildfire destroying their community but you know like you know Daniel interests telling me I mean this this is not our fault this PG. appea- Jenny didn't make the necessary investments in the pinion of him and many other people in the state to prevent US equipment from igniting wildfires and so now these businesses are having to pay and this is the worst part is that they really can't get reimbursed is kind of a gray area the you know there's insurance they don't think it's going to cover all the losses governor Gavin Newsom did propose PG handout checks of two hundred fifty dollars per business to compensate them for the losses from the last outage and Miss Anderson call that a slap in the face it's just a drop in the bucket in almost an insult so they're not happy and how is pg responding to those concerns each time that CEO Bill Johnston addresses the press he's been doing nightly press briefings at their headquarters in downtown San Francisco he's always quick with an apology he also points out he's only been on the job six months but he's looking forward not backwards but they acknowledge that you know things could have been better the pass they're looking towards the future and you know he says these planned power shutdowns are necessary to prevent another catastrophe like you know wiped out the town of Paradise last year so they're kind of between a rock and a Hard Place Wall Street Journal reporter Jim Carlton Joining us from San Francisco thank you so much Jimmy thanks
