"A lot. And he is, you know, I've known him for a few years now. He's kind of a quiet guy. He's got a quiet demeanor to him. And that's not always ideal for a point guard. For the guy who's supposed to be your best player and lead your team. You know, you don't have to be Chris Paul. You know, yelling at everybody all the time. But ask any coach, you would prefer that your point guard is vocal. And I thought it was interesting that Jimmy dikes pointed out like it's shoot around. He wasn't in the game. He doesn't appear to be. For what it's worth, one of the quietest basketball players I've ever been around consistently when he was a freshman in college is Derek rose. And he went on to be an MVP, like Derek said nothing. Perfectly kind young man just had nothing to say. And he was still unbelievable. So this isn't something that prevents you from being great, but it is something that Jimmy dykes picked up on that I suspect Rick Barnes and that staff are talking to Kennedy about. He will be there. He is their best player, and he will be their best player, and he will obviously get better. As the season progresses, but in the Arizona game, you know, he struggled a bit. I think you make a great point. They just beat Arizona with their best player not struggling. That's a great sign. And a big part of it, like you pointed out with John folks, I named him the pre season SEC player of the year. Last season. And he averaged 9.5 points and 5.5 rebounds as a normal senior. But now he's a super senior and he was terrific. 24 points, ten rebounds. I saw this last night from west Rucker. Who of course worked for golf balls two four 70s terrific. He's in the postgame press conference. Did you see this? Somebody asked John Ferguson. When was the last time the question was more or less something like this? When was the last time you felt unstoppable like you were against Arizona tonight? And he said, last night, unfortunately, last night on Fortnite, I was unstoppable. I love that quote. That's wonderful. Highly accurate. By the way, never played Fortnite. Never been in a room when Fortnite has been playing. Oh my God, my kids. Are on it boy. I can't tell you how much money I've spent on V bucks. Holy what that is, but my youngins are still too young to be getting into that life. So I know Fortnite is a huge thing and what do you buy? Ins and all that stuff, man. You gotta buy, you gotta buy V bucks, and then you use the V bucks to buy you scans and my little guys both have Nintendo switches and they are on Fortnite. They play together. And my middle guy 7, my little guy's 5. And they're like, there's a big difference in video game capabilities between the age of 5 and 7. And my little guy gets so frustrated with it because he just gets popped all the time. But I don't even want to put a number on it, how much money I've spent on V bucks over the past year. It was like, it was like every Saturday thing for a while. Like, dad it Saturday. Remember, we get V bucks on Saturday. That was my deal. If you act right, get to some bugs on Saturday. Them can't keep track of anything, but they always knew when it was Saturday boy. That ain't my life right now and I am quite happy. I got nothing else on Tennessee Arizona, and I explained for Tennessee, by the way, Arizona, which was scorching hot offensive team coming in, only held to 21 first half points. That was the season low. So congrats to the balls who looked well, let's put it this way. They looked eager, ready, adroit, and coming off that non game, the no game against Memphis. They were they wanted they wanted a chance at someone and it really showed there. So congrats to Tennessee. And should have a Merry Christmas in the Knoxville area. So dead legs court report column, it published on Wednesday, focused on various conferences forfeit policies. We're going to get into that next. But first, check this.

"You can get to me on Twitter at brayden gall. My name is Braden Gaul. Honored to be hanging out with you guys this week filling in for Paul. It's been a blast. First couple of days, I got a little bit more time today. West Rucker gonna join us coming up next hour. We got a whole nother show tomorrow as well. So I don't go anywhere folks. 8 5 5 two four two 7 two 8 5. Daniel from South Carolina Daniel, welcome to the show. How are you, sir? Hey, Braden, I've really enjoyed Georgie this week. I've got thank you. Two questions both about my South Carolina game Cox that I would like to put past you. First thing I want to cover is yesterday I believe it was. You were talking about of the SEC teams that overachieved this season, I guess would be one way to say it. Who is most likely to be able to replicate their success? And your answer was Kentucky. And the question I'm putting to you, honestly, if I was going to put a betting line in front of you and you said, okay, I'm going to bet on Kentucky to win 9 games or South Carolina to win 6 games next year in the regular season. You would honestly take Kentucky at 9 games over top Carolina getting back to 6. And then the second question is, I'll go ahead. Well, I was going to say just to quickly answer that. I'd have to think about it. And after the study this schedules a little bit better, I didn't necessarily mean exactly 6 or 9 wins, but just maintaining sort of status quo to some degree. Yes, I would absolutely put money on Mark stoops who's been there a decade and has built a program and is recruiting at a higher level than ever before to maintain his status quo than South Carolina, which I thought won a couple of games this year that maybe they shouldn't have won. If that makes sense. No, I get that. I just think that 6 for South Carolina is I think Kentucky that's going to be really hard for them to keep it up there just with the SEC. But anyways, agree to disagree. Second question is, now having said that, a lot of South Carolina fans are really acting like Spencer Rattler is going to change the world, but my question is, why do we think he's going to have success against SEC distances when he did not do well enough to keep his job against big 12 defenses? I'm really suspect about this pickup. And I think a lot of people are putting faith in something that just may not pay it out. Daniel, this is a great question and thank you for the call. I think and I appreciate you listening yesterday and bringing the topic back today. I love that. We were talking about old miss lane kiffin, Mark stoops, Shane Bieber, Josh hypo Tennessee. Sam pitman and Arkansas. Guys that I would have considered coach of the year candidates, which one of these programs do we think can replicate what they accomplished this year sort of sustainability is the question, right? And I think I just think Mark stoops in Kentucky has the most sustainable model currently of any of those programs. Arkansas has a tougher challenge in the west. Kentucky's got an easier path. Josh hypo I think could sustain 7 and 5 8 and four, but that's not good enough for Tennessee fans. That's good enough now for Tennessee fans this year maybe next, but not three years from now they're going to expect they want growth. I don't think lane kiffin can replicate ten and two because a that's the greatest regular season in school history and also he doesn't have Matt corral. So that was where that question came from. To the Spencer Rattler question. This is where two things can be true. And I think it's a really important philosophy in sports. That two things are true. That Spencer Rattler is a huge upgrade on what South Carolina had this past season. A massive upgrade and people should be excited and happy that South Carolina got him. If you're a gamecock fan, you should be happy you have spent some rat would be excited about it because he's a huge upgrade. At the same time, two things are true. He wasn't all that great against big 12 defenses. He just wasn't. And that's because he's young because Lincoln Riley's offense wants him to go down the field and he wasn't really going down the field much. He's more of a he likes playing underneath and throwing underneath if that there's a lot of reasons. Not being as good as Caleb Williams is starting quarterback at Oklahoma. That's not an indictment of who you are as a quarterback. Not being good against big 12 defenses, that's a concern. So I think it's in the middle. I think it's a huge upgrade for South Carolina. I also agree with you Daniel that I do not believe he is the patron saint come home to save gamecock football. I don't think this is also why I think Kentucky at 9 wins is more likely than South Carolina at 6. I just don't think South Carolina is going to sustain what they did this year. I think that coaching staff has a lot more work to do than we think. I think the rosters in worship than we think. And I think there's some wins that happened this year that might have masked some problems on that particular roster. Patrick and Orlando real.

"5 star for a reason. And if he can, if he and Olivia come walk and kind of step up and be that sort of counterbalance to John Fullerton and do some of the things he doesn't do like stretch the core, then you've really got everything sort of all the pieces you need. Josiah Jordan James does everything. I mean, the guy I don't care what stats say he'd make any team in the country better and he'd start for anything in the country. He's just a great basketball player. But having Kennedy Chandler a point guard really helps everything. Kind of like the rug tying the room together. I mean, I can't push this tempo, sees the floor really athletic, he's a bonus baby for a reason. I mean, this is kids probably going to be a lottery pick I think he's an unbelievable player. The kind of point guard that frankly I've not seen at Tennessee and I've been covering this beat for like a tough two decades now, basically. So yeah, I mean, he's the best I've seen here, certainly. And I think if they get one more big man to step up, I think then they've got the pieces to really, really be a dangerous team. Now, is it like a 5 14? I don't know about all that. But I think they can certainly get to the sweet 16 in Julia 8 round if they can get the post guys to step up and be that balance. And they gotta stay healthy because you know COVID right now, it's just kind of a mystery. They're all healthy right now. They're all available tonight, but in general, they're just going to need to be healthy at the right time and hopefully not get this. Wes Rucker go balls 24/7. If you can work in a she's all that reference along with a big lebowski reference into one answer, you are a Hall of Famer, my friend. Congratulations on the new, the new member of the family, happy holidays, Merry Christmas to you and the family we do appreciate it. Thank you, Wes. No, bro, can you tell us how much in movies for the past ten days? Yeah, that's me. Changing diapers and watching by the 3 a.m.. Oh yeah all that. West Rucker from go ball is 24/7. Yeah, Arizona at Tennessee tonight, Thompson bowling arena. That's a big one Kentucky earmuffs, your most folks. Kentucky up right now, 25, 15 on western Kentucky 8 minutes to go in the first half in that one. That one, of course, at rub. Yeah, SEC fans need to root for other SEC teams, not because of the silly SEC thing that we hear all the time during bull season or whatever that makes absolutely no sense. We can get into that in just a minute too. But you need it for the NCAA selection committee for basketball needs to see all of these teams win games because if they do, then it elevates everybody else to strength the schedule strength of resume, all that great stuff. 855-242-7285 were clear.

"Your chance are Tessie fans okay with that, though, because I mean, this is a proud program, does not like to admit it has been irrelevant for more than ten years. Well, I think you're kind of casual fans probably aren't but I think some of the more, you know, the more logical fan, some of the real, you know, you say hardcore, you think crazy, but I think some of more hardcore fans are actually come in the more realistic in some cases, and I think they see where things have to go. I think they have logic to them. Now you're casual everyday Joe he's. Going to see that power t on the helmet and he's going to expect, you know, ten wins, or everything sucks. That's just how they're going to thing. But I think when you talk to the average, you know, just kind of the, the more logical people, I think they know where this thing is they know college football. I'm gonna give him credit for that. They watch other teams. They watched Georgia. Bama, they watched the Florida's. You know how states they see what talent looks like and they know that they don't have that right now. So I think they do have they kinda just kinda grit their teeth and bear it and kinda think that okay let's just get this get some stability back in this program because unless you go get a Cam Newton. You're not gonna go from terrible the great and one year. You're not you're just doesn't happen. And so I think that they knew that this was going to be a case where they gotta get better. You know, they gotta get better a frontline scrimmage or or else. It's going to be more than a three year project. That's where they've got to get better because I think they have enough that skill position to get the chance. Was in in watching and observing, Jeremy Pruitt if there was one thing that you've been able to discern that makes you believe in feel this program will eventually get done in a big way. What is it? I think it's his his his private calorie, Paul, if that's a good word. I, I think that he sees things for what they are. I don't think he's going. I don't think he's a he's a smoke blower. I, I don't think he's a guy who believes in the impossible. I think he's a guy who knows exactly how far they have to go. And he knows that there's only one way to do that. And that's just to keep working and I think he gives them a chance. He doesn't make excuses. He doesn't tolerate them. He, he knows what good football looks like you knows, but grateful ball. Looks like and now after the past year, he knows what bad football looks like. And I think that gives you some perspective on knowing just how far you have to go because I'm sure he was a little overconfident when he came to Tennessee who wouldn't be look at his resume, I it's, it's just ridiculous. But when you look at what you have, and then you finally see, okay? When, when I what I have goes against Bama, Georgia. This is what happens. I think he sees that he knows that. Right now. And I just I think every time I go talk to the guy and every time I talked to people about the guy they seem to be of the opinion that he does have a pretty good idea. What he's doing any. He doesn't know something he's not. He doesn't shy away from saying. I don't know that I'm gonna get someone who does. So I, I think going out and looking at the hires like Jim Chaney higher. He made great hire that guys always had good offenses. He takes whatever he has at his disposal, and he makes something successful out of it. So I think this guy is making moves to me that the Kate he has an idea what he's doing. I don't guarantee anything. I don't think there's any guarantees right now. But I think this guy gives them a better chance than its predecessor did. Good stuff. Great stuff, west Rucker joining us, thank you west, we'll talk. We'll stay in touch. See. In any time, Paul, you know that you're listening to Paul finebaum.

Guys hitting it. Well, now I'm telling you he's going to win this week. You know Jimmy hasn't played in four weeks. Okay. Well, I don't know. So give us the delay of the land on old rocky top. Well, yeah, I think it's been a pretty pretty productive season for them. So far falls, especially when you consider the fact that they didn't get, you know, there's fifteen practices that you usually get if you're in a bowl, and Tennessee started the offseason kind of, on a bad note that way, but I think things have gone. Okay. So far, you know, they they've made some gains in strengthening conditioning program that they needed to make. They kind of looked like a bigger stronger team right now. I think more than fifty of them stayed in town for many term, which is a good step in the right direction. So there's no doubt that they have still a long way to go. But I think if you're trying to, to least kind of make steps toward respectability in the off season, I think they're doing and I realize we're only talking about one year. But if you go three or four years deep into Butch Jones's tenure I mean, they ran off a couple of nine and four records. And I it, it felt like Tennessee had turned the corner. Why does this? Feel different. Or does it feel different? That's a good question, Paul. I mean, I think you look at last season, you know, it's easy to sit there and look at five and seventeen. But then, you know there was only one team in the late that didn't have a single traffic this season. Every other team had multiple takes believe. I hope I'm not speaking turned there and Tennessee had none..

"Washington or Oregon, because they're, they're standalone. Colorado's is a boring place. It's, it's not it's not an interesting game. Boulder, Colorado's a pretty place. I've been there and but I it's an I it's, it's a tough trip you gotta fly. I mean Gainsville do Atlanta, Atlanta Denver. And then you still have another hour drive. Yeah. And got you know kick to the hotels, air and all that stuff. Yeah. You're Asking asking gator gator fans fans did. to drop a couple thousand dollars to go to a game. And you take all this money out of businesses by the way, not even not even a good TV game, Florida and Colorado, a big yawn. No. I just don't know in the last few weeks. I've been such a big supporter of Atlanta wage, man. It's, it's gone south. I just don't understand that usually when you coach, I ten is first year you see a lot of attrition, but you don't seem like Trish in, in the second year. You know, you think you've you the people that couldn't operate on his system void left. So this is just kind of unusual. What's going on? I mean do you have any clue? West Rucker covers the university of Tennessee and west, thanks they maybe closer than maybe some of us today. West. Thanks for the time. Always great to have you on. Well, yeah, it's been a pretty pretty productive off season for them, so far fall, especially when you consider the fact that they didn't get, you know, there's fifteen practices that you usually get if you're in a bowl, and Tennessee started the offseason kind of, on a bad note that way, but I think things have gone. But I think if you're trying to, to least kind of make steps toward respectability in the off season, I think they're doing and I realize we're only talking about one year. But if you go three or four years deep into Butch Jones's tenure I mean, they ran off a couple of nine and four records. And I it's felt like Tennessee had turned the corner. Why does this feel different or does it feel different? That's a good question, Paul. I mean, I think if you look at last season, you know, it's easy to sit there and look at a five and seventeen. But then, you know there was only one team in the late it didn't have a single draft pick this season. Every other team had multiple takes. I believe I hope I'm not speaking turned there and Tennessee had none. So if that doesn't tell you sort of what they inherited I don't know what would tell you. I mean that, that seems like most obvious thing to be. And then you look at the fact that despite the spine all that they'd be two ranked teams. So it's easy to sit there and look at why things aren't going well, but if you wanna look at maybe why things could be better. I would argue that during the entire Butch Jones, tenure he had the best best roster in the east a couple times and didn't win it. And every time he didn't have the best roster of the eastern and go to a bowl game. So, you know, I, I think if you're if you're looking at getting the most out of what you have I think this staff in one year already did. Probably more than Jones did in that way. So if they can accumulate talent, if they can sort of stack the things together and built death in the program. I think this staff here has a chance to get more out of its players. Well shows here about a about a path and the path in the SEC east is not easy. And I think that's what would concern some people from the outside. Okay. Jeremy Pruitt is a good coach. I mean we've all said that the recruiting is better he inherited a mess, but which program is he going to race in front of to get near the top so he can make a run because certainly Georgia and Florida seemed to be inner different world right now Kentucky's, a head arguably South Carolina is a head Vanderbilt has beaten Tennessee on a fairly consistent basis. So, so we're, we're is it and who is it? Well, I think you have to sort of throw Georgia out of the equation for now. I think you know what they've done with that roster..

"So many spring games. Not enough time to talk about them all but we have west Rucker on. And he'll help us better understand what? Jeremy Pruitt faces in the seats in west great to have you on so many stories going on Tennessee. We almost forgot about spring football that the game still scheduled, right? Paul. Yes. Mother nature might open up and swallow it whole, but you know, at this point. Yeah. It's just another week at Tennessee. It is amazing though with the rig Barnes situation. And then Kelly Harper football has taken somewhat of a backseat everywhere. But let's hear right to it. And and see we may learn something tomorrow. But what have we learned so far during the spring? Well, I think we learned that that it's you know, to to coin the term from from Pruitt's mentor there the process is ongoing. The it's, you know, the they needed to get a lot bigger a lot stronger up front on both sides of the ball. They've made some strides toward doing that. They're not quite there yet. But it's a step in the right direction. I mean, they kinda to me last year this time, I'm not gonna go so far say hopeless. But they didn't look like there was a lot of hope there this season. There's a little more hope there this time. I think they have a little bit more to work with. I think they're a little bigger stronger. Physical more mature all that. But this isn't a ten when team or anything. But I think they've they've taken some nice steps in the right direction. If you had to break break down the different sides of the ball, the different units. Where would it? How would you do that? And and I'm really interested in the in the process in terms of the the the progression there. Well, I I think that you know, what they do have at Tennessee. And they've had it since Kerr out. There is a really good coach and staff and when you add a guy like Jim Chaney to the mix as offense coordinator, a guy who can run it through it do both always been able to kind of work with the tools that he has at his disposal that that's a major upgrade. I mean, they've got to seven figure coordinators there now and expectations come with that. But I think that gives you a chance these guys have experienced I I really really liked what they've got some positions. I really really liked that wide receiver core. There's a few future pros there. A lot of experience. Lot of upperclassmen talent, which is really nice including kidney dos. Palmer who I've been saying for a couple of years now, everybody's gonna know this big Canadian at some point. I don't know when but in some point people are gonna know about this kid. He's really good. And I think the the biggest stories though, what this team up front offensive line wise, they had to come a million miles. It really couldn't go down. It could only go up. I think it's done that a little bit. I think they've had a couple of guys come on this spring and do some good things defensive line, though is still where where I have the biggest question, Mark. And that's a place. You don't wanna have questions that they've gotten numbers there that got bodies? I don't know how many separators they have right now. Our how many game winners they have their. So when you look.

"You know, what I'm talking about here. Holly Warlick's future as the lady vaults. Head basketball coach. I don't see how it could be considered good all just the host with you. You know, and and Phillip Fulmer continues to give that dreaded public load of confidence. But you know, that's just something people do to buy time. Usually, I think that if you wanna look at the nicest way possible for for from Holly Warlick's perspective, you could say this is a young team. And it is a team talent. So it is a team that should get better. But when you're talking about the prospect of Tennessee team not playing inside of light tournament. I didn't think that would ever happen in my lifetime. I'll be honest with you that that just that that you should not happen in a place like, Tennessee. So. It's tough situation because everybody here loves Holly from Knoxville it's her dirties in the rafters of that building everyone. Here loves Holly. She's a hard person to not love. But the results are what they are in right now, they're not good. And I I don't know what Tennessee will do. But I have a hard time seeing her comeback at this point. Well, done west Rucker. Thank you, very very much to listening to Paul finebaum show podcast. Chris is in Florida. Chris welcome to the program. Good afternoon. Hey, paul. How's it going? It's going great. Thank you L been nervous. If my first time ever calling you. I'm a big listener and this for years, but on I wanted to call in because I from the state of Mississippi, and I went to old miss. I'm a black guy. I went to open this up from the small town. There went to community college for two years, then old miss and after I joined the army with an armed force every year traveled the world, and I wanted to call him because I heard stuff you callers, colony in about what happened is we can with the basketball thing and the Klan rally and how it reflect on ole miss at large. Now, I could say this. I know I don't have much time, but I would miss over a decade ago. And I had a lot of friends. Of course, we black and who were of other minority groups, and we know we all heard the terminology that omits was racist growing up. Some people say some people didn't care, but I grew up in a little town in Mississippi where half my friends were black and half white. You know, if you leave the south stuff, you make house them why friends, you know, rednecks before. But I didn't see it that way. So I go to missed and during my entire stint there. I was never a victim of racism. I didn't know what it meant because whatever people consider racist. It never happened to me at home. It's like for them with my professors, never treat me differently. Because I was black dating grade my papers based on my skin colour. No that denied me service anything because I was black. Nobody white or any other race treating me differently because I'll black so I see what's going on this weekend. And don't get me wrong. I hate that the Klan rally there, but also because of my time in the military. I don't like the fact that they look for the anthem..

"Rates Thursday -gratulations to anyway, welcome back to the show a lot to do today, including some conversations about basketball. Did you see Tennessee last night? They were on the brink memorial. Gymnasium in Nashville, but they escaped with a little help from their friends in one player in particular grant Williams, it is loud in the whole right now his play has been loud on the floor. Sly any flushed is on soil high. There's nobody could have blocked all the way foul called the baskets twenty three to twenty three from the free throw line. On my own. Basis. Are you kidding me? The stork will performance for grant waves in this building tonight. Everybody taking notes including Andy Katz talking about grant Williams showed tremendous leadership in overtime for the vol's at Vanderbilt. Kyle Boone saying, it's absolute joy to watch Williams. Play basketball, Chris Dortch, he just got his jersey retired tonight. My reaction was pretty similar. I mean he and sending him to the free throw line was not a good move. But that's how he ended up spending a lot of time there. He was brilliant. Tennessee escapes one or two controversial calls down the stretch. But in the end Tennessee survived nearly revisiting scene from nearly ten years ago when the then number one vol's went to Nashville first time out lost. They avoided that this time. They'll take on West Virginia Saturday in the big twelve SEC challenge. West Rucker was there to cover it. And it's always great to catch up with him west, you cut your breath. That was quite a ball game last night at memorial gymnasium good afternoon. Hey, all you doing today. Yeah. That that was a great great game last night. I mean that was everything that she thinking in state rivalry like Tennessee Vanderbilt should be mostly Tennessee's game at Memphis early this season. It was a really good atmosphere. Lots of fans from both teams. And it was it was a really really fun basketball game. You know, I read what what you said in your column today about the controversial call we've already had some chatter about that here on the program. Could you break that down? Then I mean, it looked terrible on television. But I didn't have the rule book out like you did. And I mean, I know you supported the call. But in real time, it looked like a bad call. Yeah. I dislike Paul I didn't like the call. But it was the right call, you know, that that that hook and hold insis is a big thing that they said going into the season about you know, if you've kinda got somebody who going up for a rebound underneath them. You've got you've gotta get dislodged before that person goes up, and he didn't do it. And that play. Put in there to kind of prevent those, you know, head injuries and dislocated shoulders and things guys get because he's got leaping forty inches off the ground and my fall down and hurt themselves. So I don't love the call especially in that situation. But when you go back and look at the monitor it was the right call, and if you're going to go to a monitor you don't really have the the opportunity as referee to say it's late in the game. I'm gonna let that go. If you go to the monitor and there's evidence you have to make the call. So I didn't love it. But it was like all okay. Other than that. This is now not to harp on this. But Tennessee's now the number one team in the country, so scrutiny will come. This is the second game in a row. They've they've come within a hiccup of losing against an unranked team, obviously, Alabama a little bit more -ccomplish with a win over Kentucky. Vanderbilt. We know we know the narrative there is this anything to be concerned about or is it is Tennessee just dealing with the vagaries of the SEC in late January. Somewhere probably in between those Paul. I think it's something that needs to be on..
