"A red queries in some faraway location maybe there in San Diego at a West Los Angeles maybe even Saint Louis they travel here like crazy Chicago that's the big get away kind of scenario go check out ray's baseball they also come your way no actually they're they're pretty nice I mean the talk is maybe a baseball back in July they can figure out the details NASCAR is rolling again sans a crowd it won't be virtual by way of like video games it it's going to be a real racing at Darlington I can tell you that if I if the gone and seen NASCAR California I I've seen in Las Vegas Kentucky speedway looking at this point to have that race is scheduled until they hear otherwise so that's something to look forward to I'm wondering if you know are you comfortable in the idea of being able to go vacation right now this summer or after this cove it nineteen kind of scenario dies down vaccine maybe maybe it's next year if not this year do you feel comfortable with the idea of taking a vacation whether it's by car on a road trip which I'm good for like you know if it is three four five hours on I'm okay even if it's a weekend get away that's that's fine if it's longer a to be honest with you I prefer to fly I'd rather fly than driving lessons in the region if you know what I mean or even fly then get a rental and drive someplace possibly so I'm wondering is they figure out what's necessary to get us safe in the skies flying it is much is natural it could be five or miles an hour five miles up in a metal tube with you know give or take a hundred of our friends or you know least go flying but you know compatriots if you will I'm wonder wondering where are you looking forward to going on vacation a little bit later by the way correctors gonna join us from the free store food bank about one thirty five Dr David Lowenstein with some good information conversation we had talking about the kids in answering their questions in a way that's not do me too scary as they try to figure out exactly what's going on in this world that we're living in now too as we start thinking about daycare and summer camps were not being able to do that in in in what that means trying to get back to work five one three seven four nine seven thousand eight hundred eight four three twenty four forty one that's a hundred the big one and if you got yourself in eighteen anti device pound seven hundred you can get interactive that way as well as the Twitter at sterling radio so what in the other question I got I got a lot of questions I'm looking for your experience and this is sort of the last neighborhood of congregation comment into conversation frankly neither social media you can tap tap and click click all you want that's fine but this is a chance to really converse here is if we do this maybe even if you're listening on the I heart radio app because not everybody is opening up it is we are here in Ohio and other parts of the country the tristate a little bit by little bit most of the country trying to open up and I'm curious you know how comfortable you are about going out to get a bite to eat and not just for take out but maybe sitting down having a couple drinks maybe seeing some friends you haven't seen it maybe even co workers you haven't seen for a while only in a little square on your monitor in some type of zoom conferencing Skype kinda you know health situation which is always unusual and and maybe sometimes awkward it is old it's difficult enough I don't know how many trips I've had frankly countless where his literally been based on well if we're gonna go someplace in July let's check out the ridge here or let's go check out this team there or whatever it is maybe it's a bangles weekend on the road and certainly lots and lots of people come to the tri state to see Reds baseball in their team come in here sometimes it's a situation where they might be able to get tickets here great American ballpark not just cheaper that may be the more readily than they could in Chicago or St Louis even though we know the Reds look to be a pretty competitive in the NL central this year even those football bangles if they get back to it and find a way to do it in the months ahead with new you know Mister burrow under center and national champion Heisman Trophy winner rookie starter looks to be for our football Bengals five one three seven four nine seven thousand eight hundred and they want to pound seven hundred and eighteen anti ready to go out to get food ready to go out and get drinks what about a vacation what about camping rules for camping kind of it all the rules are challenging it is not rules I don't think because somebody's trying to be heavy handed to keep us down which I had this conversation with a cousin the other day he's like well you know it's just Big Brother telling us what we can and can't do I said I I think it's really not about that I don't think most people care what we're doing is we're not hurting anyone else it's about just that not hurting anyone else in trying to socialize and navigate this big sandbox of life in which we're living in this community this society not just here in the tri state but nationally and internationally it's challenging five one three seven four nine seven thousand eight hundred a big one pound seven hundred eighteen anti see here to get the Hank firstly at Larry Travis and room for you on seven hundred WLW was sterling Hank how you don't good idea I think I'm okay you ready for vacation or do you feel comfortable doing it if we are able to go someplace where do you want to go Hey I just got off the golf course played eighteen holes in three and a half hours nobody out there sterling how did you how did you hit it because you make me feel jealous about it and all I need is one or two good hitting smacks of that ball in a potter too and I'm I'm good to go for the next one even though I may be in the woods the whole way otherwise yeah I property the property the persona that buried the last one so I'm pretty doggone happy that's nice yeah but well I I just feel like sterling you know at some point you gotta get out I mean I I would think like you know we need to protect the people need to be protected but I live my life and you know I get it I get it but I think that's how you build up some immunity courted but I'm ready to go I'm ready to go to Florida down to destin may be in place in golf and then when when things settle down just a little bit more and I I just think you just cannot get what point do you say to yourself you know what we got to go back to what we just can't sit in the house I mean how long are you gonna do it yeah I mean I get tired of myself frankly it but and I can't get away from me that's a whole nother problem so when you talk about Florida are you looking to drive you looking to fly because the flying thing there stood that's kind of odd Jim is almost like being trapped in a ship it just it's a little bit faster yeah why I think sounds like it could be relied on my pride not that I'm worried about driving down there but I will try to drive down there maybe spit out South Carolina spend the night and then go to wrestle it next day but the client would be nice but it just sounds like it's gonna be a little different doing that so I don't know whether I would do that or not it's a listening what you got to get out and hit the ball a little bit today and play some golf it's nice seven four nine seven thousand eight hundred the big one a pound seven hundred eighteen anti kind of curious what about vacation I mean if you got a house someplace or condo someplace it's one thing but if you're looking to get a hotel in some places that it travel issues weird and then it is seeing people in from other places that that makes people nervous at this point I go head I don't know how many people it's weird because it turns into a weird contentious conversation at this point that should not be part of the only should be based on politics it is just about function in life there is economics to it I mean it's business and livelihood that's important you got to have a roof gotta have food on your table not just food when you go out to eat it is we started here you know this re opening to get back to normal situation hope that it doesn't turn into a horror show in two or three weeks down the line with another spike what about that vacation where you're going where you're looking to go when the dust settles or maybe sooner than later it's you to Muncie David seven hundred WLW get one or two more and before the break what's going on Vera **** I just came back from Gulf shores Alabama the redneck Riviera and it was really lots of people doing it herons restaurants were packed nobody's wearing a mask no one doing so this this this insane anyway we had a great time well that's a good thing now how long were you on vacation we were down there for a week we just came back Saturday okay it was very awkward scenario anywhere conversations about this forever but he just sort of going about it didn't seem as normal as normal can be now at the end of normal as normal could be the restaurants for practicing the little social distance thing they read fifty percent but people were lined out the door that's a good thing I hope to get some place sooner than later on about the flying but the other I appreciate your reaching out David I'm glad you're okay got to enjoy a break Larry Travis and others coming back your chance to get interactive to driver gonna join us at one thirty five from the free store food bank the need now is so many people furloughed so many people that have been let go in the midst of of this economic turmoil as a result of this virus and aerial you'd even with unemployment and whatever benefits and is there may be out there with a little assistance people are hungry more food insecure than ever in a lot of people looking to help more than ever because there's a lot of getting people in the tri state so we'll talk to Kirk about what's going on with the free store food bank if you're in need or you want to maybe contribute and just about twenty minutes or so and then also doctor David Lowenstein about discussing the whole situation answering questions that your children may have and how to do it in a way that's not going to complicate things or make it worse or are anything other difficult waters for all of us to navigate that's at two o'clock so hang out more sterling on the other side your chance to get interactive where do you want to go on vacation and are you going there you planning it I mean there's probably a good time to get some really good deals is stuff is opening up depending on where you go five one three seven "During the Berrington plaza high rise fire this week rescuers from LA city fire west nineteen year old Jeremy brutal hospital in grave condition he died Friday evening that fire in West Los Angeles this triggered a push to require older residential towers in the city to install sprinkler system there are more than four dozen high rises in the city that are not equipped with sprinkler systems including Barrington plaza at the side of this week's blaze and another fire back in twenty thirteen while previous efforts by the city to mandate to their installation failed council member Mike von in has introduced a new motion to try to make it happen I actually feel pretty confident that will get past this time I've got the support of firefighters are that the support of the building trades tenants I think there's there's gonna be a big coalition behind he had this to say about property owners and developers suggesting that requiring the installation of sprinklers would increase rents and add to the affordable housing crisis all the buildings that are gonna be covered by this we're talking about fifty five or older residential high rises all of those would be rent control units so any any cost to get passed on our are limited by their cities rent stabilization ordinance and because of that he says he's not as worried about it as he would be

Scientists Studying Extreme Winds And Wildfires

"In southern California a rare extreme red flag warning is in effect high winds make wildfires more dangerous. NPR's Kirk siegler reports that scientists are linking wind conditions to climate change this story about wildfires extreme win starts with snow supposed to get about a foot today climate scientists Daniels key mountains so what does that have to do with dangerous California wildfires it turns out everything and it's that extremely cold air mass to the east of California it's driving the extreme wins and the extreme fire weather conditions in that state right now swain says the prolonged warming in the Arctic is his dry season is ending but climate change is causing the traditional winter rainy season here to shorten dramatically and Swain says California is a lot hotter vegetation extreme winds like these make wildfires much harder to control let alone even fight especially as embers or igniting new fires more than a mile or more ahead of the initial wall of flames that's why tens of thousands of people have faced evacuation orders across California the wind Ribbon Getty fire ignited in densely populated west Los Angeles early Monday. La Fire Chief Roth Terrazas warned the winds could reverse all the progress aide building containment lines this is a record setting event and a big worries that choppers will be grounded due to it being too dangerous to fly that is a new fire starts forecasting has gotten a lot better fire managers are better prepared to deploy engines to the most at risk neighborhoods ahead of the winds understands why the authorities are being so cautious due to the winds especially for me it's hard to get out and I don't want to impose on anybody I'd rather be safe than sorry extreme

"Oh, west Los Angeles, Orange County radio station. Showdown. I'm Debra Mark live from the KFI twenty four hour newsroom. A meeting with President Trump and democratic leaders to try and end the government shutdown has been cut short. Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer blames the president again, we saw a temper tantrum because he couldn't get his way. And he just walked out of the meeting. Vice president Pence says the president is trying to find a solution. He left the room today. Because speaker Nancy Pelosi said that even if he gave her what she wanted. She would never agree to the border security priorities that we have on the table. And that was on. House Republican leader. Kevin McCarthy says he found the Democrats behavior during the White House. Meeting embarrassing President Trump has met with Republican senators uneasy with the partial government shutdown because of Trump's insistence on money for the wall. A reporter asked Trump why he wouldn't sign bills that would at least allow furloughed federal workers to get paid my position you do that. I'm not in your position, I'm asking you. "Jayjay. Oh, eight ten. Good afternoon. I'm Pat Thurston. In for chip Franklin today. My guest is Lee Steinberg, and we're talking about college athletes are they being exploited by their schools. They don't get any money. They don't live high on the hog, but the schools themselves, the coaches themselves, and the NCAA are making a boatload of money and lead that brings me to the next question. I have the NCAA in thousand seventeen brought in about a million dollars a Bill a billion dollars, and that came mostly from broadcasting the broadcasting rights where does that money go and does any of that money make its way to the student athletes now really get goes to the NC double A, two different programs. Hey administrate, but very little money. Come back to to the athlete, and the NC double A itself has become a huge cash. Cow and again. There. Very harsh with players who commit any kind of violations in any way. And there's some horror stories about players who didn't do the paperwork right who transferred? It the wrong time, and the NC double A has very little compassion for for the athletes it at this point, simply a business, the concept of amateurism. We all agree is a worthy one. But the reality of the situation is that we're forcing young people that wanna play professional sports to go to a college campus for year and basketball for tour for three years in football. And you're catching a whole bunch of people that have no real academic interests. They're not going to graduate the schools don't pay attention to that in general. They pay more. Attention to keeping the athlete eligible for his sport. So you have a number of these house fleets who only a tiny amount go onto the pros and for the rest of them. They may arrive after four years on the college one zero ability is done with no diploma and very little life skills because they didn't take school seriously. So if you allowed them to go to the pros whenever they choose because it's not in the US constitution. The theorem are near eastern languages is a prerequisite to cut off tackle for five yards. And I haven't seen that. And people in other professions don't need to go to college. We wish every athlete would go to college graduate and and have a head start on life. But it's not happening now. And so the reality is they're caught. And who establishes those rules is that does that come from the league's the NC double A regulates college athletes, but there's a real delicate relationship between the pros, and collegiate so that the the allowing anybody to come in would be a threat to college football college basketball. They have the ludicrous one and done rule now where the best college players and set up a simply having gone from high school to the pros now go for a year and leave and it doesn't allow very much doling of of of. A college program over time. So it the whole situation is need of revision. And it'll banyan did a case on the video games that you talked about athletes have at times talked about unionizing one of the promises that number of the state with the biggest football programs, for example, or and right to work state say don't allow collective bargaining state employees. I should say and and then athletes. No, they have a short prayer. There may be bold on the field. But don't confuse him for the advance guard of the Bolshevik Workers Party storming the Kremlin, right, right? Well, you know, the NCAA has said they'd paying athletes hurts their education. And I've seen a lot of sports columnists say balderdash, would you agree with the sports columnist over the NCAA? Wait a second. So if. A college student who's not an athlete goes. And takes a job that pays him handsomely while he's on the college campus where she there's no problem with that. Making enough money to live on somehow is a problem remembering your big urban areas, the cost of housing is really high. So if you want to get an apartment, and and you go to UCLA you're living in in west, Los Angeles. Listen apart where the French are exorbitant or USC similar thing. Callen stanford. It's the same deal. So they're fine when they're living in a dormitory, but when Nasir pay for the housing costs themselves. It means has live a long way from campus, and because those both Palo Alto and Berkeley or desirable areas to live, and so they have to live a long way from campus. And then they have to deal with how do they get a car to get them to campus? Right. And especially if they're coming from poorer families. I mean, these things are all major obstacles to them impediments to them that the other students don't necessarily have to contend with. So we're going to continue talking about this. When I let you go. But I do want to ask you quickly about something. I didn't tell you. I was gonna ask you that. And that is a CTE. I know this is something that's near and dear to your heart. You've been a real advocate for the players when. It comes to brain injury. Have there been any has there been any progress in this way to somehow protect the brains of athletes, and I'm talking specifically on the football field? Look there have been adjusted in the rules. So the blocking and tackling with the head using the crown of the head or crown helmet is now gone. That's better. There are experimental programs going on where for example in the Ivy league this year. There was no hitting during practices. So they knocked out all the hitting in preseason and during the regular season accepting games. So you need to start not allowing young kids to play tackle football. Or it's certainly not advised until we get to probably high school because the problem is the youthful brain is at higher risk takes longer to recover, and it can do permanent damage tell the truth of the matter is every time an offensive lineman hits defensive linemen. That's line of scrimmage. It produces a low level shopping customer event. So an offensive lineman could walk out of football having played in high school, college and professionals with ten thousand sub concussive injuries. None of which have been diagnosed none of which he's aware. But the aggregate almost certainly add up to a cocktail that's going to give you a premature senility Alzheimer's risk. Parkinson's risk chronic chromatic and simple op at the end depression. So the only good news and all this is there is now a prophet incentive in developing helmet the current helmet essentially just protects against skull fracture. So a helmet that would attenuate or absorb the energy flow and not let it go in into the brain nutraceutical in pharmaceuticals could heal the brain. I mean one day I'll be stem cell before right now. A large portion of the people were playing, for example, professional football. We're going to have problems. I know I know that's true. And I keep holding out for the idea that they are going to do something with the helmets. That are going to provide the protection that will allow us to enjoy the sport. Without every time. We see a hit. We're worried about what just happened to that guy's brain. Well, and you know, I have players are now retired who are now suffering from dementia. And so it's it's a real problem to take athlete. For years. They said, well, there's the risk. Will you had to know what the damages and potential risk was from concussion before you could accept that rich? But at any rate, I love football hope it remains. But we need to make them much safer. I agree with you and Lee thank you happy new year to you, enjoyable games. And thanks for joining us this afternoon. The Rose Bowl is a blowout. Utah. Listen to Pat and. Appreciate the endorsement, that's the least Steinberg. I'm Pat Thurston. And we'll be right back. You're listening to GO. Thurston.
