No. 5 Purdue tops Illinois 76-71
"Number 5 perdue saw a 24 point second half lead evaporate, but held on at crunch time for a 76 71 win over Illinois. Brandon Newman had 19 points to lead the 26 and 5 boiler makers and says this type of win is good preparation for tournament games. Obviously it's march, you know, it's a good time of year, beautiful time of year. And it's going to be a lot of close games. It's going to be a lot of back and forth. Pointing at 11 Illinois held Purdue to just 29% shooting in the second half. Matthew Meyer led the align I was 16 points. Tom mccabe, West Lafayette, Indiana

But to pull that into the real world, Paul, this is not a normal distressed workout, is no, and this is first of all, the $8 billion of debt and you remember, there's less than a $1 billion of EBITDA. So the leverage multiple is double digit. So this is a disaster from a balance sheet perspective, but the problem is you've got all these rights holders, the Major League Baseball teams, the NHL, the NBA. Yeah, come on, it's a fossil. Producer Zach Edie led the team with 26 points and 11 rebounds. We take a lot of pride on the controlling the glass, you know, getting those offensive rebounds. A lot of times, coach pain says, when you take a good shot, a good thing is going to happen, like we got to get offensive rebounds like that. Braden Smith leads No. 1 Purdue past Iowa 87-73
"Purdue freshman brayden Smith played more like an upper classman in the boilermakers 87 to 73 win over Iowa. Smith had 24 points as number one Purdue improved to 23 and two. Shots just fell and kind of just play how it went. So with shots being able to fall, obviously confidence goes up a little bit. So that's what was happening. So it just felt good to make a couple shots. The boilermakers saw a 21 point second half lead cut to 6 with 6 minutes left, but it was all Purdue after that. Chris Murray had 24 points to lead the 15 to 9 hawkeyes. Tom mccabe, West Lafayette, Indiana

"Mason Gillis averages 5 points a game for Purdue. But in an 80 to 60 win over Penn State, Gillis had a breakout game, 29 points, 27 of them, on three pointers, and Gillis ignited an early second half boilermaker rally that put the game away. There's no reason I can't make shots sometimes as more of like a self confidence that I kind of hesitate whenever it's a night. The first couple ones went in and I was like, I'm gonna just keep shooting it. Purdue is now 22 and one and leads the Big Ten by three and a half games, Penn State falls to 14 and 8. They play super physical, they kind of file every time and that kind of gets me going. I like playing physical. I like those types of games and it kind of shows you kind of got me going when they started following me and they started hacking me and started doing things really busting my live in the second half. Purdue big man, Zach Edie, had 24 points and 16 rebounds. He says the boilers haven't reached their potential. You have a really good game, for example, like today, we out rebounded them by a lot. "A new drama set in an English town in the early 1980s. It's called empire of light and it follows the life of a manager of a struggling movie theater, played by English actress Olivia Colman, who's known for her role in The Crown and films like the favorite. Look around you. This whole place is for people who want to escape. People who don't belong anywhere else. How do you feel? Do you feel a bit? How am I supposed? The world is changing I talked with film critic Christian toto to get his thoughts on the film. It's set in 1980s in England. And it's about a theater manager in all the different problems that she's facing. She's unhappy with her work. She's in this sort of odd relationship with her boss. But then a new employee comes along and she strikes up a relationship with him. So it's about that romance. It's about the racism of that era because she is white and he is a black employee. And the main character here is Olivia Colman, who's just one of our best actresses. She's wonderful here. She brings so much nuance and texture to the role. But I think it's the kind of movie where there are so many different competing themes. You've got the problem of racism. You've got her main character and all the complications that she's going through. You've got this sort of love letter to the theatrical experience and all these glowing images of the theater. It's one of those old school houses where you don't see many of them these days. It's sort of the director Sam Mendes has really connecting to our love of our childhood and what movies used to mean to us. But I think with all those different elements not one of them really kind of jumps out at you. So it's a fine experience, but I just didn't think it was compelling enough despite the fact that Coleman is always so good on screen. That is film critic Christian toto of Hollywood in toto dot com. In this week's D.C. sports subtle, we beg the question, when was the last time the best team in the D.C. sports landscape wore burgundy and gold, this was Dave Preston's answer. 99, they went ten and 6 were this close to advancing to the NFC championship game. They lost a tough one to Tampa Bay. A game that they very well should have won they had a 4000 yard passer and Brad Johnson. They looked like this was going to be the contending team in the NFC east. And that a lot of people forget that offense for Washington back then was second only to the greatest show on turf rams. That season. So that was a better team that I feel like people remember. "Spencer now that you were always rooting for giant institutions to fail. Basically, now that you're essentially a rebel snowspeeder flying through hoth, hoping the AT at walkers just collapse and trip over themselves. It does raise a follow up question for me here because when you look at everything that's happening in college football right now, I'm curious what makes you just like belly laugh. I love the idea of, yes, UFC playing an Ann Arbor in November. I love that struggle. I want to see it. I want to see Lincoln Riley try to throw the ball 55 times when it's 25° and blowing sideways. That fills me with joy. I love the idea. You have the idea of Lincoln Riley opening up a tauntaun and climbing inside to survive halftime. Yes, yes, that's pretty much what he's going to have to do. I love the idea of all of those modern day kids, all of these like southern California football players going to like yes, West Lafayette or going to Madison in a driving snowstorm. And just really wondering what mistakes they've made in their life that got them to this point. I love the idea of Texas, which is the most moneyed program in college football in terms of just cash. Sheer cash, not performance, obviously. But cash. I love the idea that they're going to go into the SEC and they are going to struggle. They're going to struggle mightily. That's one thing that Texas is really going to discover is hard about playing in a conference where they are not the big fish with a little carefully manicured pond constructed around them. I think they know that. I think they know what's going to be hard. There's going to be an adjustment period. But knowing an experiencing are two entirely different things. But it sounds like Spencer more than anything. You want the culture shock. You like kind of the idea that the multiverse of college football is ripping apart. And we're going to find out what it's like when people just show up places that they were never intended to be. We get complaints for the better part of 20 years about weakening schedules and about people no longer playing intersectional games where a team from the West Coast plays a team from the east coast where you don't have substantial out of conference games. Congratulations. We just brought the conference into the conference. Now you get a lot. This is not just pimp my ride, but for conferences. We heard you like conferences. So we put a conference inside of your conference. That's correct. That's correct. We put a UCLA on the dash of your Big Ten. Enjoy. If you don't like it, too bad. That's what you get now. Also, we got complaints about, well, you know, if we have divisions, you don't get people playing across. Well, that's eliminated now. That's fine. You can see some real anarchy and scheduling, and you can see one of my favorite things in college football in a sport where styles make fights a lot and the timing matters in terms of who meets who win and who's healthy. You can get my favorite thing which are more instances of Purdue, Ohio State. If you don't know, every now and then Ohio State will just show up for the Purdue game and get waxed. Dilated, right? Every now and then, you know, a job or faces a champ at the exact wrong time for the champ, maybe he had food poisoning. Maybe the job was just feeling good that day and lands a lucky punch. And sometimes a beat down ensues. And those are my favorite things because those teams don't play a lot so they don't exactly have the book on each other. Alabama and auburn have the book on each other. They know what they're going to see year to year. Oklahoma playing, let's see, Kentucky, right? Kentucky to me, we do thinking out loud on the SEC network and the most fun we've had is watching Kentucky weekend and week out just beat people up. They might lose that happens, but Kentucky Mark Stevenson built what is to be pound for pound the meanest program in terms of what you're going to face every week.

West Lafayette Purdue takes it all Team coverage That's right now Mary's chocolate chip Not quite Let's get to Bloomberg Maria teneo in Brussels Marie I want to start with a comment we heard from the Kremlin this morning Go through the mentality haven't Poland they are Well Jonathan is so difficult to decipher when we are at this stage The Kremlin now saying that there could be an option of neutrality Remember this is the buzzword We've heard this repeatedly for the past two weeks It means Ukraine does not enter a military alliance with NATO would stay neutral in the case of conflict but of course there are many details around it that would be pending Would they keep an army Would they have to pledge additional concessions to Russia Remember the Russians that you say neutrality could work but they also keep using this word dean at the country being a Nazi by the way in Russia is a very very serious insult They're really trying to dehumanize the other side of the talks here But again it's very difficult to figure out what's going on here because neutrality can mean anything and everything When you speak to the Ukrainians that tell you yeah that is an option but it would need very serious security guarantees And this is not just about Russia It would be a brown every neighbor around Ukraine but also countries like the United States and the European Union would have to agree on it The one thing I would note however is that the two sides over the past 24 hours have made it clear that the positions are becoming more realistic but also a major reality check for the Ukrainian government now singing openly explicitly NATO is probably not an option for the country Maria got 18 questions on the military on the map on this war but let me go to you for a Bloomberg question Are the sanctions are the financial pressure are the most favored nation pull away from Russia Is it working Well when it comes to the European air response to that and it was only announced yesterday so Thomas essentially we're talking about 24 hours in which the European Union through the WTO pulled out the most favored nation status This is repeated with the United States did last week but when I speak to European finance ministers and I had conversations yesterday with the German finance minister mister lindner I also had a conversation with America They do say their work and the pressure is on and Russia's standing very close to potentially a default So they do feel the pressure on the economic front is there but the problem is Thomas you know for the Russian government this is not an economic story This is existential This is about Ukraine and it's about Russia It's a political story for them in ways that many in the west probably don't even understand for the Russians This is not just about an economic crisis as a fundamental question about whether or not Ukraine belongs in the Russian Federation and for the Ukrainians is precisely about breaking free from the Russian Federation Anne Marie just quickly here how much has this become a politicized issue in Washington D.C. with some Republicans coming out and saying that the Democrats are not going hard enough not supplying enough ammunition not necessarily providing enough support to Ukraine I think you'll see a lot of that today when we hear from president zelensky 'cause he's really going to implore lawmakers to do more with setting up either a no fly zone which by the way that has bipartisan support in terms of not doing that There's a lot of Republicans who agree with the administration that can be very much so an escalatory response but when it comes to Polish fighter jets or any sort of jets from a NATO country getting over to Ukraine many Republicans think this is something that should be delivered that they should take this advice on from president zelensky He knows on the ground what is needed and you had senator McConnell yesterday in a speech on the floor of the Senate minority leader talking about the fact that he thinks the administration has been a bit hesitant on this and dragging its feet So potentially I think president zelensky is really going to put the Biden administration in a very difficult place today and almost immediately after he speaks this morning President Biden is also going to speak and talk about the military aid the U.S. is sending I am age Thank you with Maria today On that important conversation Tom did we ever find out why facilitating the transfer of megs to Ukraine was considered an escalation Did we ever get a full explanation of that John I don't know The full explanation is simple and I thought Gregg villier captured it perfectly this morning It's a moment the emotion we're going to see at 9 o'clock at 9 20 this morning will be extraordinary and the adult in the room is at 1600 Pennsylvania avenue and he has one thing on his mind and that is nuclear weapons and the deterrent forces on both sides The issue I have now later is that once you've established defined it as an escalation then ultimately can you go through with it But the problem right Right it's a self fulfilling prophecy How can they now say okay we can supply those aircraft But now it's not an escalation How do they determine that And how do they basically frame that to the Kremlin It's almost self imposed Futures at 1.2% on the S&P on the NASDAQ count by 1.75 yields on tens to 16 Your fed decision just around a corner This is Bloomberg.

It really has become the busiest day of the week for college basketball. Other than Saturday. And I don't know if it's always been that way, has it always been that way? No, it's been that way this season to an extent because you had PAC 12 and WCC makeup games on Tuesday and that those West Coast leagues never played on Tuesdays and Mondays normally. So that has been part of it. Yeah, Tuesday's pretty packed. Wednesday traditionally is the most populated non Saturday day, but Tuesday has been a lot of fun. Dave richard here on fantasy football today. Your waiver wire addition recap another game. That was kind of hard to watch but had a little drama in it and that monday night football game. Thirteen ten saints. Good morning jamie. Has the waiver wire looking the waiver wires looking looking like that monday night game but you know what west lafayette. Yeah but you know what the devante atoms situation sucks in. Billy does so many levels but it does give us allen lazard dave. How're you how. What are your thoughts now other waiver. Wire all my fab on allen lazard and maybe a finger cross on. Martha's vowed gatling robert tongeren just any any packer. That's going to catch passes from aaron rodgers on thursday with davante adams has a chance can't wait just excited bursting at the seams. Obviously we hope devante is okay. He's vaccinated pretty sure that hasn't been officially confirmed so should be fine but Yeah from a football perspective. This was the early super bowl. This was the best game of the year and it might still be. The packers have rolled without devante atoms over the last couple of years. Aaron rodgers if you're sitting there thinking do. I need to pickup taylor. Heineke or dana jones or retool and a shallower leak or something. What do you guys. Think is aaron rodgers. Still a start this week in six games over the last two seasons without adams he scored nine points then. He scored twenty two fifty three thirty to thirty and thirty seven. In six point per passing touchdown league so one horrible game one may and four monster games. This will be tougher competition. Though jamie is aaron rodgers. Still a starter. We'll be playing. Should we be playing the waiver wire. He's still start the only guy that hasn't been playing or playing well and they'll reason i phrase it that way because her cousins coming off a bite. That's the only guy. I would start over him that you might not consider. Okay all right so that'll start the show with our big news dave so basically your reaction to this devante adams's who by the way. He has not been ruled out officially yet. But it's going to be close for tough for him to get back on a thursday. They're hoping david bahktiar as the left tackle compla- but that's probably still a little unlikely. Mvs may be able to play this week. It is so important and it is part of the waiver wire as we talk about lazard and tanya and maybe even. Aj dylan's eighty two percent roster. What's your take on the packers and how they get it done against the cardinals. I think they try and get it done with the ground game and it just makes sense..

They lost to Ohio State in Columbus on that Thursday. It did so behind the historic effort from now as Hillman, who scored 50 points in that game. The Wolverines have not played since. Meanwhile, per do it has been a struggle this year for the Boilermakers. A perennial powerhouse in the big 10 that his sort of fallen off of that perch Right now. "Hey, this right here is why I don't like what? Right Where? Right here. This story right in front of me. What is it? The story right? My hands. Well, read it. Wish. TV. The pretty university basketball team was forced to board a second flight on Monday night after their first charter plane to the Tuesday game in Maryland had to make an emergency landing in Indianapolis. What sort of emergency landing Well, it doesn't go into intimate detail, but the team was heading from West Lafayette, the Baltimore when the plane experienced mechanical issue, like, See if they were on a bus that could just put Over to the side of the road and said second bus come get us and carrying us away. Well, they did exactly that. It sounds like in an airplane, right? Yeah. What if they hadn't been able to make the emergency landing? They did for now. You know what? You should do what you should get on. Take talk. No, no. There is a pair of their twin pilots and they fly together. The women pilots, airmen mail pile. Well, I'm out. But their whole account is set up for people exactly like you who have all kinds of phobias about flying. And so they go through like the common things that people are most afraid of, and they tell them here is why you don't need to be afraid has been really helpful for me because I don't love flying. I mean, I'll do it. Obviously, I'm not as fearful as you are, but I don't like it and there's a lot of things that scare me to death. And so they calm me down. I usually watch their stuff like right before I take a flight on like, what about the turbulence? Like, what does that mean? And then I'll listen to their videos about turbulence. So a couple of follow up questions on this. Let's say you were on a plane that had to make an emergency landing. Would you be OK getting on another plane and continuing on your journey? Are you like This flight is so cursed. I'm out. No, I would get on. I'd get on a new plane. And in fact, I've gotten on planes. This happened to me Just going to Tucson Over Christmas. There was a delay on my way back. I was leaving Tucson and there was a delay getting on the plane because of mechanical difficulties on and so they were like we have to fix these before we allow you to get on the plane, and I still got on the plane and went so that would would be the next question. This plane here. Let's say they landed, They said We fixed it. Let's go. Would you be comfortable staying on that plane? Oh, Johnny. Tough guy. Not so tough anymore, huh? It depends on the mechanical issue like it wasn't something is an engine related, Or is it like the windshield wiper doesn't work they have of landing. An emergency landing of the windshield wiper doesn't work mock. Well, maybe it's a lavatory issue You don't ever really know this isn't Tommy boy and also don't think it's an issue with the bathroom. I think there's something serious that they require the plane to make an emergency landing. Hence the word emergency. It was just, you know, out of oil. You just don't know if it was an easy fix or not Oil like a jiffy Lube. Pull over the jiffy Lube up. Yeah, Okay. Brandi just needed to check that dipstick. Yeah, that's all damage joke. You're gonna love this one. This one came on our voicemail. Why was the snow smiling? I don't know why I was the snow smiling. Saw the snow blower coming. Oh, yeah. There you go. Very good. Right up your alley. We actually got this one from our boss. David, would this next story? Oh, yeah. This is a good one from Yahoo, a public high school teacher in San Francisco named Ingrid's sire Oci. Wrote an op ed for the San Francisco Chronicle that appeared on Sunday and went quickly. Viral has an objection to the quote, privileged white privilege, male privilege and class privilege symbolized by Bernie Sanders, choice of a relatively casual Burton snowboarding jacket and repurpose wool mittens. Can you believe that? This is a thing? She's mad of the Bernie Mim. I'm of him bundled up with looking angry. Yeah, she's claiming that is privileged white privilege male privilege in class privilege. It's just It's the epitome of all of the privilege, she says, because And her rationale for this because I was like, what in the world. How do you get privilege out of this ridiculous get up, And she says it's because ah woman would not be allowed to dress that casually to dress down that much at an inaugural event which I call Bs on. Would you like to read the meter? Read the quote, please. What did they see? They saw a white man in a puffy jacket and huge mittens, just it not only in his social distancing but in his demeanor and attire. What did I see? What did I think My students should see. Ah, wealthy, incredibly well educated and privileged white man showing up for perhaps the most important ritual the decade in a puffy jacket and huge mittens. And Well, if Bernie Sanders deserves whatever he gets, so I'm not wondering what he's getting is like piles and piles of money from capitalizing on this whole thing Well, and to his credit, I believe that, at least on his in the he has donated most of it to of charity meals on wheels to help poor people, which is great. It's how capitalism actually works, Bernie You get to make money off of stuff that people want. And then you can use it for your own purposes. Whether those are altruistic or otherwise. I love this quote. I don't know many poor working class or female or struggling to be taken seriously. Folk who would show up at the inauguration of our 46 president dressed like Bernie? Yeah, they locked down the capital. Regular people can't get in. Hello. But I mean, that's her point is completely nonsense. If a woman wanted to wear that exact get up, people would make fun of her exactly like they're doing with Bernie. It would be like equal opportunity mockery. That's how the world works. It wouldn't be like she would be seen out. She wouldn't be allowed to attend. Her whole argument is preposterous. Just one more thing that's making me furious today. Boy, you are rolling so mad today and so many things. What is new Year? New Year's at the thing? What's going on over here? Well, it's February. This is the worst month of the entire U Look. Valentine I love Valentine's Day. That's the saving grace of out of February but February as a month Sucks, because it's you know, it's like the dead of winter. It's like the wintry ist of winter months, and it's when it's gray all the time. And I just hate February. Uh, Can we switch gears here? Yes. Did you know Jenna Jameson is 46 years old? Well, you told me that And I guess I thought like she was actually a little older. Really? Not because she looks bad. I'm not saying that. Joining us now is Jimmy Hello, Who is the beat writer The Indianapolis Colts for the Indianapolis Star to talk about Jim. Theoretically, it's supposed to be an off season for you. But there really is no off season and that work has only accelerated, is it not when Jimerson holds court for 45 minutes or so, and talks about everything that's gonna go on? You're thinking yourself. Yeah, Things are gonna kind of amped up and be a little bit busy here for you, right? Yeah. I mean, it was. It was two weeks after his fellow talking 45 minutes And I thought, Okay, I got a few stories, their numbers retired £6 of retires, and then The coaching staff is getting pillaged by Nick Syriani in Philadelphia. So yeah, it's been It's been gonna whirlwind. But you know, I can't really complain about having more content. I guess so. Having the owner talk for 45 minutes in order, who is it was honest and and, like, kind of kind of put it up front. So what he's looking for. It does certainly help you do your job. The quarterback situation is gonna be a big topic here, Jim. But let's shelf that for right now, let's begin with this. What did you take away from? And for those that are unfamiliar with what we're talking about, Jimmer say the owner of the Indianapolis Colts held kind of state of the Union address. If you will, with media covering the team about his thoughts in the offseason, aside from The elephant in the room, which is the quarterback position. What else jumped out at you about what Jimerson had to say. So two things. The first thing that straight that jumped out at me is that he believes wholeheartedly that he has the two best people to leave the cultural Natalie Prince Pound bank, right. I mean, he said it about 100 different times and 100 different ways that he believes he's got two people in football, even around football for decades, and that These guys are that if somebody the only to the Colts to a Super Bowl or back to the Super Bowl, I should say it's going to be these two was that was the one thing and then the other The other thing that jumped out to me. It was unbelievable. He believes the culture close to being bankers. You think that has some holes? Obviously quarterback one obviously left tackles, another that the people, the places the need to shore up But he believes that they were close to beating the bills. The heartbreaking loss is a part of him died that day when we lost to the bills, but that's the team I think you could reasonably say is is the next best team in the NFC in city, and they obviously gave him you know all they could handle in that game, so I think he thinks and may be reasonably so the clothes are Super Bowl contenders and again with the good off season. Led by Frank Breaking Chris Ballard thinking that but the challenge here, Jim, is it not, You know, you previously worked for those that are unfamiliar covering the IndyCar series and the Indianapolis 500 notably, okay. Saying Our team is right on the cusp. If only for the quarterback and left tackle position is kind of like we can win the Indy 500 as soon as we get a driver and a front left tire, right? I mean those air to critique, you know, pretty critical positions here at 100%. True, Actually, it's funny that my I wrote a column I think right after they lost to the bills, and this is I also admit I thought they were just coming back. And I wrote something to the to the tune of. I think the Colts Close to being Super Bowl contenders and my brother called me Thief in Chicago. But you read the column because how could you say that without knowing what the future is a quarterback and then some other spots, And I said, Well, I feel pretty good about it. And then looking back. I'm like, maybe maybe I jumped the gun a little bit there. Maybe it. Maybe I should have waited on what Philip Rivers was gonna do. And like you said, Anthony Castonzo is a huge piece of left. Actually, your If you said any other team and the Colts fans here's hoping for the team be the best. But she said any other team all the guys who stick the quarterback. Pick the left tackle. Get a really good pass.
