Christian Toto: Hollywood Is Rapidly Losing Its Grasp of What the People Want
"But Christian the weird part is I mean I'm only 47 I'm not that old I mean I'm not a spring chicken but you know I'm halfway through my life I remember just a decade or two ago Hollywood used to make fun of this stuff This was a punch line I give you an example You're a Hollywood guy Remember demolition man Wesley Snipes and Sylvester Stallone and Sandra Bullock think the running joke in that movie was that culture becomes so PC Sylvester Stallone wakes up from cryo freeze whatever decades later And he can't believe it How everybody gets harangued for saying the wrong word at the wrong time on the street Hollywood used to make fun of this stuff and now they're exactly what they were making fun of So there's no excuse to like oh my gosh we didn't know you literally wrote movies about it Yeah the lack of self awareness is something we see aggressively on the left these days but it carries over into Hollywood They don't get it They really don't get it They're thinking about a new Oscar host and I would think they might even say let's try Stephen Colbert He's a funny guy Not even realizing that half the country loads him because he's aggressively political and mean spirited So I think that's the way that there is a bubble mentality within Hollywood where back in the 90s they would understand that They had a grasp of what the culture wanted with the people wanted They're losing that rapidly and it's

Vaccines coming kids, right and we're going to be fine. We'll get through this and when we do We could start to focus on some of the other things that we need only worry about like the fact that the millennial generation and Jen Zy are idiots. That is not very nice, and I blame a lot of that on the fact that I don't know. They're going to school that doesn't pay attention to history. We use history is a road map of the things that we did right and the things that we're not supposed to do We agree on that. They did this right? They did this wrong. This was amazing Jump forward and leap into the world that we we see. Today we went from this to this. It was amazing technology that we use it as a road map. We also look back and say this was awful in horrible. This should never be repeated. This is evil and bad. We're not doing that, apparently. Case in point. "Adversary I'm sure that there might be a little sympathy in their exactly I dealt with people in the domestic violence context where some assault victims so. On their life, well, one very vulnerable people are picked for salt in the first place so that that that's that's sort of an eggshell effect that takes place there, and then you have the effect of the assault can destabilize them in such a way that one of the reasons why you don't see some of those particularly child abuse allegations ever make it to court is they they tend to become witnesses that will be perceived as not credible. But. The reason is because of the psychological damage that was either they're already psychologically damaged and that's why they were targeted in the first place or the effect of the trauma has created that psychot- little psychological damage or reinforced it to a degree that, and now that was the case of this woman's story. As soon as I saw the basic allegations I was like, okay with probably the cases she has been victimized and she created a fantasy story to make yourself feel good to survive psychologically and she's also trying to survive materially by hiding the identity of the real father and she just combine the two and what she needs as. Mental health assistance but the politicians looked at it and they're like, oh, we can. We can sue Wesley Snipes. We can say Wesley Snipes is the Dad and I think some degree of racial prejudice played into that by the local Indiana officials who are I think mostly it was a desire for notoriety a desire for celebrity. So fascinating is when she they knew this from day one, I suspected it was ultimately to prove it. But when we got all the underlying documents which had come in and told them was that she listed the actual father's name and join us at one other person and she said it was Jesus Estrada. But you know as Wesley Snipes. So right away that should have been assigned and and then her whole story was that they'd had eight kids together. They'd been secretly married in May. In Mexico, the government had ordered it be kept a secret that conception of this particular child was almost like an immaculate conception he showed up at her door and blade outfits and told her what a great actor she was going to be. In order to to to test the accuracy of the these allegations are required to give physical descriptions of the father. There are forty five different things to identify. She couldn't identify any except one. She said Tattoos maybe, and the reason why he said maybe was because she didn't know if the blade tattoos were real.

"Is my name Wesley snipes also for delight is my name and our next guest sterling K. brown for waves and he didn't just received a nomination for his film role sterling K. brown was also nominated for outstanding actor in a TV drama series for this is us he also won an Emmy for that show playing America's beloved slightly corny dad Randall Pearson we spoke to sterling K. brown about the film ways he plays Ronald a hardworking father who pressures his son Tyler to be the best at everything he does because in his mind there's no room for mediocrity for a black person in America but that pressure has dire consequences for Tyler and the rest of Ronald's family let's take a listen search the answer to all your projects first but I always thought if I ever met you I have to ask you this question are you in your father named after the poet sterling that's a really good question okay so my anecdotes answer that question is sterling a brown part of poet of the Harlem Renaissance was on the SAT the year that I was taking it and all my friends were giving me a bunch of crap because they're like how did you get on to the SAT but we are not named after the poet my dad is sterling brown junior and his father is sterling brown so it's a family name my from my grandfather would actually be older man sterling a brown or contemporary of his so they weren't named after each other it's just grandfather that than myself were you familiar with his poetry growing up I was vaguely familiar I didn't listen to it all the time or read it all the time but I am familiar with these very powerful very strong voice not a bad name to share in common with an incredible artist is it okay if you listen to a little bit of sterling Fraunces home called strong man which I love do you live it's it's nineteen thirty one and it starts with talking about they dragged you from your homeland they change you in coffers they huddled you spoon fashion and fill the hatches they sold used to give a few met gentleman ease hand then the home goes on to talk about how strong men are and so this is actually a port is on in his own words listlessness sterling Abraham what from the slums where they have him you what from the tiny hearts they could not keep from you what reaches them making them a lady fearful today they shout prohibitions at you thou shalt not this now shall not that reserved for whites only you laugh one thing they cannot prohibit the strong man coming all the strong man gotten stronger strong man stronger hello I love that right wow those great I think the movie house are going to come back for this I've never no one's ever played sterling brown for sterling brown that's pretty cool here's a copy of the whole plank flooring and I thought about that poem because I thought about your character yeah movie weights he is a strong man he's going to raise a strong young black man and he is loving it and he is demanding and his his being demanding of the way he shows his love sure right yes so when you were thinking about this character and his success and your successful missing playing this character where did you go to for that where did you get to that from your personal experience was this from interviewing other people who have sons I know you have sons I have two boys eight and four and online I don't think it is my particular parenting style and it wasn't my father's either but I have uncles a different family members who have a military background who I have witnessed with different cousins at cetera who are very sort of austere very demanding because they have high expectations like if you don't have high expectations and there's very little need for this type of love this type of discipline but when you see potential within your children and you want them to fully realize it he also simultaneously navigating the landscape of being black in America and know that that can be treacherous in and of itself that the room for mediocrity is two fold people number one a looking for any reason to dismiss you and to discount you and secondly it is threatening right your very existence can be a threat to people whether they it's conscious or unconscious right so you have to be excellent to survive and to also thrive both of them are necessary I think that it's a right the conversations that you have and and communities of color and marginalized voices we have to be twice as good ten times as good to make it just as far are justifiable and still after today we're not in a post racial society in my humble opinion I think that the father in this film if he could have done anything different was make sure that his son at the space in the room to share his experience of what life was like for himself so that when things start to fall apart for him not to give too much away he felt as if he had to shoulder the burden of his circumstances on his own and his fear of disappointing his father was more than he could bear rather than actually saying this is what's happening I need help we had actually Trachsel's on the show as well as Calvin Harris and yeah everyday so our listeners may know that the plot a little bit young talented athlete gets injured and his world starts to fall apart yeah and wanting Calvin and trade talked about was the collaborative nature of the script and how much the actors were able to Adam layer in what were some of the things that you talk to Trey about that made its way into your character and on to the screen yeah I think well I think this was a conversation that a twenty four our producers and a lot of the actors had were there's a tragedy to trans fires in the middle of the phone and we didn't want to contribute to a negative stereo type of a young black man right we want to make sure that people didn't see him as a fog of of lesser value but but that a young black man lost his way makes a terrible mistake but that does not negate him of his humanity and when I first talk to Trey about the movie as a man I think you have written something special but I'm also really concerned about the crisis point and whether or not people will tune out on whether or not it is a representation of blackness that I am eager to see or something that I'm fearful of and it all depends on the execution of a particular moment Hey being white was really really open to hearing any and all suggestions and trying to find a way to collaborate so that everyone's voice was a part of this melting pot even in the way that the script came about him being white into being an autobiographical sort of movie but now the two casts Calvin whose African American collaborating with him hearing about his upbringing his relationship with his father a past romantic relationships and how they can sort of blend those two things together to make something that is very specific right so the Calvin is not just black by happenstance but black on purpose and that this is a reflection of a black family now that also has a universal reach right because you don't get to the universal but through the specific I I applaud the both of them Calvin for taking the role on tray for saying that like this person doesn't have to look exactly like me in order for him to reflect my experience of growing up and we came up with something really beautiful together yeah I I for me it was a matter of trade also that the camera run a long time he didn't call cut immediately so there's a lot of room for improv in terms of you see Calvin and I working out together like that's not all scripted sometimes it's us off the cuff there's a wonderful scene towards the beginning of the film where we enter into an arm wrestling match which was not written at all I was just like trade in call cut my was like well let me see if we can fill the space and cabins like you Hey we don't do it we have to do it and just it's sort of informs the dynamic between this father and son which is they are connected there is a deep abiding appreciation but there's also a bit of competition there as well my guess is sterling K. brown we're talking about as many projects currently talking about waves it's interesting in the film this the perspective shifts the narration shifts from from the sun's story to the daughters story which is a much quieter story but it's also very potent story what shift does the father make as we as we start to see him and what the aftermath of after the crisis point and then we also get to see it through with the daughter's life yeah I think that was probably the thing that sold me on the film because you see a much different iteration of the father in the second half of the film by virtue of the crisis and that if he wants to connect with his children if he wants them to share what's going on in their world he has to also share himself and show weakness and show week that's the part I'll I'll even go to save vulnerability yeah we can't afford that and and that way it takes away the idea that I feel like a lot of men are afraid of being weak because they see it as not being strong but there's tremendous strength invulnerability right and the and it also sort of highlighted for me and for Renee as well that you can live in a household and things on the outside can be seemingly well and you can have very little to no laws of knowledge of what actually transpiring in the lives of your children right especially with these devices were all walking around with many computers and we're next to each other but not necessarily in conversation with each other it's made me pay particular attention to cultivating an environment where my eight year old and a four year old know that they can come to me with anything you know nothing is heavy is what's going on and where it is right now but you got to start now if you want to make sure that when it comes to seventeen eighteen they feel as if they can come to you I've been speaking with sterling K. brown we'll have more after a quick break.

there wide eyed and open mouth drooling and watching our commercials sorry that was the you know what that was that was a that was what the meaning Mr bean is been around for a hundred and four years and people love him really really there's no you barely they love you so much writer for ad world you know it was all her so can you we need you to explain the appeal Mister Pena the subpoena weren't funny I don't know it's nothing really instead this is the answer then I would feel of the am for macdonald's all people love the Kerr or for the whole no it's just it's a member I would eat exactly the same number of payments had missed helping any damn brand he doesn't mean it never existed even have some sort of relatable like catch phrase every like the Tony the tiger their goal right that he's he's just this weird animated the thing well and and elitist people long at the end of your service on a V. all love him the cane he was a monster he's he packaged up millions of his own **** consoled snacks eats yeah wait a minute what the hell you're right that's incredibly troubling it was like do you know if if I was the McDonald's spokesperson read your soul gourd kill me and all my family Barbara he is in Paul Lovett he's a monster his reign of terror is finally over no if if uncle cashew was pitching peanuts that I would get not sacrificing his own kind so he's hanging on a branch with the two movie stars yes who's the blond guy Matt Walsh mo from the Veep show probably most famously did a lot of daily show correspondent stuff back in the John Stewart era okay hanging on a branch over a canyon yes and to save their lives he Mr pain it lets himself drop well is there is there the branch there hanging on his crack in the yeah the three of them is too much Jack somebody's got to sacrifice themselves and Mister Pena falls to his death and then burst into flames when he hits the ground there's a there's a bit of a maybe he's okay and then the explosion so so it's played for the fan that's kind of funny as the record Mr on shelled it is full peanut shell I'm trying to picture it's like a ball park being out with the shell on right yes yes yeah he is a shell right no shell the means the show's been removed which is always can if I climb in a shell or night shelled now I'm shell that they're on shelves I'm right yes the office while are the opposite of like people okay in my house to if I'm in a house yes if it not has been shelled it has no shell okay that is the opposite arm and then the Superbowl they're going to run the the funeral which I assume is going to many celebrities it will probably be a music because everyone loves miss everyone loves Mister Pena was there a Mrs Pena I'm not here out the guy but it's kind of weird he was a player he all kind of George Clooney issue more well George Clooney's merry I think he got with cash we own the Caprio bit of a mixed nuts sort of thing while in a hundred and five years ago that was controversial yeah he would get with a P. com if you don't have this family's resources you probably would've been an outcast yeah right I am beta roasted for that oh boy yeah so you're more of that during the givers did you hear about the moms for housing they got so much attention all across the nation certainly and in Oakland Hey you got these moms that just wanted my house in there they they got kids in their moms they got no where to leave housing shortage so they just broke into a house and stayed there will that the person on the house you gotta get out finally got him a victim right but it became a cause celeb and they came up with a way to let these moms by the house officially as of Monday they get to they they they they bought the house well in non profit from what I You know it's funny. The rubber met the road with my mom as far as t._v. Dinners met as far as t._v. Dinners went because it was like she had had to square off. It was like one of those superhero movies where the superhero has to fight his own d'appel ganger like when captain in america has to fight captain america and the avengers or whatever that is that was it was. I always my mom but it was like captain. Health food meets it's captain lazy and they're like she was like now look. I'm totally committed to health food. I always talk about eating healthy food. I talk about how bad why lower and they were like yeah but i also i love health food but i love lethargy as well so i could like captain leather. Gee i could feed my family something. That's healthy but that would require require. That's a calorie burner like to make a whole chicken and then make some fresh vegetables and a salad or i could get the pirate themed hotdog that dog with the pudding in the fish sticks which i know is junk but it doesn't burn that many calories so then it became. They squared it off like those two. I do nothing but preach about health food so also super super lazy you know and guess what you guys i will tell you something like wesley snipes set on that airplane always bet on black latin always bet on lazy lazy lazy wins lazy when there's one of these things where it's like i love this but it requires movement the person of principle that i have to do it then not always goes too lazy and lazy would win a d._v._d..

Oh, I disagree. I in thirty seconds, bro. They showed us thirty seconds of new footage for small, and they show it a lot. They showed stuff. I wanted to see. Let's break this down this thirty seconds. What did you think? Overall, watching this thirty seconds. I loved it. I mean, it's not your typical SuperBowl trailer where these big bombast shots and still fight scenes. It's don't actually there's no money shot. There's no there's not really much of a plot reveal now. There's nothing really. But it's very understated, but it's all character stuff. Yeah. It's really all we need. We don't need to see anything more than what we got my favorite part of the trailer is just seeing cap in group therapy because. Looks like he's just on the edge of a breakdown. And he's obsessing over the fact that he could not save half the universe. I love that. Poster. Where do we go now that they're gone, and he seems to be so that's one of the great things I loved this trailer is where actually gang see New York Post snap. You could see like the skylines. Deserted around the statue. Liberty looks like a refugee camp. There's a shot of city field. The baseball field empty and Mike. Whoa. Like, this is kinda what you wanted to see some time has passed. Also in the very beginning..

"Clock. In and asking the writer's room. You know, what would suck? Well, would suck. If you know, you can have a hamburger. Talk. If everything was talk. Oh bell. It invokes another of Wesley Snipes films, which has one of my favorite lines. A thing that I still say regularly just in my everyday life, which is Sonny shines on a dog's ask some of the times. So it could it could quite possibly be that as well. It could quite possibly be as you say broken clock. Right nothing, but chicken wing on a string. So for those of you who are unfamiliar with demolition, man, which at this point should be nobody nobody should be unfamiliar with demolition, man. But if you are let me catch you up to nineteen ninety three so demolition man is a film. It stars semester. Stallone. It star, Sandra. Bullock, Wesley Snipes is the villain, and then a whole bunch of character actors that you would recognize including Dennis Leary in one of his only big screen role as an extra. John black is an extra blend Shattuck's who is the guy from Beetlejuice. He played oboe in Beetlejuice. He has a key character role here as well as a socio Bob who I love I is. So great. Doesn't character type in all the movies that he plays is always the same character? Jesse Ventura has a cameo in this towards the end pre governor. Yes, pre governor post predator Ventura is in this. So demolition is the story of a police officer this semester, Stallone's character. And he is known for blowing things up in order to catch the bad guy. He tries to do the right thing and things just get demolished. And at the very beginning of the film, Wesley Snipes who play Simon Phoenix. Who's one of the best villains in in cinematic history? Cosign, Simon Phoenix has captured a city bus full of people. And so that's just goes into capture him and accidentally. But in the in the fight between him. Him and Wesley Snipes. They accidentally blow up the building and kills all the bus passengers or whatever. And so John Spartan is sentenced to, you know, the maximum penalty in the Kreil prison because in demolition man, the way that the Justice system works is they freeze you in ice. And they reprogram your brain to be more useful to society. Right. And we should also set up that the movie came out in nineteen Ninety-three. It takes place in nineteen Ninety-six. It opens far off of nineteen Ninety-six. And the first thing that we see is the Hollywood sign on fire. And most of Los Angeles is already this. It's it is a dystopia. It's what we would think of as the typical distort wasteland city on fire, the technological Bladerunner sort of future. It's it's basically the imagery that we saw from the LA riots. It is regular dirty Los Angeles on fire. Right. So John Spartan is sentenced to prison. And so is Simon Phoenix. And so they are in the cryan prison. We fast forward thirty six years. The city of Los Angeles has been combined with the city of San Francisco into a Metroplex. San Angeles is our is our new dystopia m- city after the big earthquake of twenty ten the cities are combined and under the leadership of a central figure. And so because Los Angeles, San Diego, and Santa Barbara are now one city under Raymond Cocteau the way that Raymond Cocteau has taken over that city is through his brand of sort of pacifism and restore. St. pacifism and control. So everything that is bad is bad and therefore illegal right salt sugar bacon, cigarettes curse hamburger sex, like actual, physical paper paper, all of it is illegal in the new San Angeles. There's a group of people who live underground on. These people are led by Edgar friendly and Edgar friendly who is Denis Leary's. Character is this rebel who keeps showing up, and they spray graffiti on walls, and they steal stuff, and whatever and they live in this society, and they're a big menace to the above ground regular utopia. And so all of a sudden sign. In Phoenix is broken out of prison. And everyone says it's because Edgar friendly has broken him out of prison in order to wreak havoc on the society. And of course, because they are such pacifists because the cops in this future society don't ever have to do anything or whatever Simon Phoenix goes on this murder spree 'cause he can because the police don't know how to handle him rob Schneider plays a small role in he says release officers. We're not trained to handle this kind of islands, right, which which should tell you everything you need to know about this -ociety, the main protagonist cop in the story is Lena Huxley who has played by Sandra Bullock, and Lena Huxley and her is get together. And they decide that the only way to catch. Simon Phoenix is to use the person who caught Simon Phoenix in the first place the last time and that is John Spartan. So they go back to the crow prison, and they thought out Silvester Stallone. John Spartan and they give him a badge. And they tell him we need you to go catch Simon Phoenix. And they don't like any of the wave that John Spartan is going to catch Simon Phoenix. Like nothing about it. With the exception of Sandra Bullock, who has finish is the twentieth century and by twentieth century. I mean, nineteen Ninety-three specifically, and she has this apartment. That's just full of prep from the nineteen nineties, and she listens to nineteen nineties commercial jingles as her music, and she is very much looked down upon by all of her friends because she has this romanticism for the sort of dirty nineteen ninety s right? So it turns out that Simon Phoenix was actually released by Cocteau. So that he could go kill Edgar friendly and smash the underground resistance to this dystopia society when John Spartan follow. Oh, Simon Phoenix down into the sewers. He realizes oh, actually, these people are aren't stealing randomly. They're stealing food. They're trying to maintain their free society under ground because they don't fit into Cocteau's master plan for this pacifistic utopia, and in the end of the film. They end up merging the two societies. Edgar friendly is going to be in charge of both the above ground and the below ground and everybody loosens up in. That's the. It's better to be free event to be part of this
