6 Steps for Coping with Uncertainty with Gregg Krech

"Another minute as the months of the pandemic drone on and on and with it the continuing uncertainty finding places of pieces becoming all important focus of life for many of us I. Think. In I shared with you in the previous episode that I've committed to a more consistent daily meditation practice as a way to take positive action rather than focus on all that is wrong in our country in the world. And the other thing I did was to reach out to my teacher and friend Greg Creech. One of the leading authorities on Japanese psychology to talk with me on this podcast episode about uncertainty and transitions. When we talked on the phone about what advice sir practice he could offer to podcast listeners as we whether this time of great uncertainty he said something that really struck me. He said it's not a mass issue. It's your personal situation and attachment, and then he went on to say that everyone is dealing with losses but ultimately, it's an individual thing. and. So with that brief lead in I want to welcome greg to this podcast once again. Hi, Greg thanks so much for joining me. Are Wendy thank you for having me. It's nice to talk to you again. Okay. So Great I would like us to focus much of the conversation today and I think I mentioned this when we talked on one of your recent articles coping in the garden of uncertainty. And also, if we have any time left, maybe you could talk about your recent series focused on the challenges post posed by this a pandemic, which was life not on hold right is that correct? That's correct. I though, if you could unpack what I just shared from our recent conversation which I hope I quoted you correctly even if you remember what you said it's not a massive issue at your personal situation, an attachment and then everyone is dealing with losses but ultimately, it's an individual thing. So can you talk more about those concepts Greg? First of I do think that it's an unusual situation because in terms of the pandemic that the whole world. Is suffering from this and obviously Some people are suffering in different ways or more or less but but we out all are exposed to the situation and. and. So I'm not trying to suggest that that there. Is Anything but a global. Threat to our lives into our health and but I think in terms of how we cope with it. It it really is very much an individual issue has to do with our own practice. It has do with what presses are buttons It has to do with what We. Miss that gives us a sense of impatience and agitation because we have such a strong desire to have X. and we can't have it right now because the conditions of of our lives in the world. So in that sense, our ability to work with the situation to cope with it. To find a way to accept what we can't change for example. Though those kinds of things that are coming up our individual issues and the kinds of things that will which your buttons or agitate you or. Frustrate you. At an extreme are probably not necessarily the things that are going to have that effect on me but I have my own things and so to that extent, the the. Solutions that were looking for while we can talk about vaccine as a solution to medical problem but the solution to our practical and spiritual issues that we're facing in our own minds really is a question of of coping with that as an individual and I think of it similarly when I think of coping with the issue of death. All right. Right. That We we all will die It's a given but But how we die in how we face in cope with our own individual death is something that we can't share with anybody else right it's something that we have to work with. As individual. And I think net sense the situation we find ourselves in now. Is is somewhat parallel to that. Yeah that is that's really

It's good value for those who haven't played it yet. But for those who've already bought control encouraging councils, that's a high asking price for the upgrade to playstation fiber xbox series X. I think the win seats in never run in the studio a who is being on the publisher side of the investor side or the executive produce aside so. It's a very difficult business Tell you want I you know it's like being tennis. You have one federer you have one the dog. Thousand Meetings of. Or? So people tend to look at one. Success Rightly, I would say, but visit outs look at these guys we have invested X. and they've met in one meeting thunder. In your yet but so it's great but don't forget. You have one fitter one dollar, your nuggets of Denny spares in the world. So you have. Millions of studios but drivenow studios. We didn't make it. So you have to be very mindful of act and then I would say the of issue. With the to studio that I've found is, is guys deb's in big gain of Utah everything inside the game in before you also did some marketing daughters, your some hours. So He's what received a lot of example than you know, sad stories for studios and great stories above issues where you know. That has invested more than. Adding to the game and the students Vancouver's do better but they don't have the mind to finish Beta on investing marketing issue with somebody was the money we physically speaking up though the project. So it's very, it's a, it's a very difficult situation in. What's going to do the Tories? reconized that than trying to out drank to basically. Bring product to some products to the market, but it's very difficult to. The point is once you have the game, usually the sequel is easy because you have a young money flowing obscene. Experience situation. So you don't have enough problems on after two years or three years at you like, okay. What do we wanted to?

Wendy Osefo on the Black Lives Matter protests, and the 2020 election

"I'm Jim Taylor skinner, and this is the electorate. On this episode. A have a conversation with Wendy Osafo when he is a political commentator and a professor of education at Johns. Hopkins. University, she also served on the Obama Administration's anti-poverty initiative when he joins me to talk about everything from the current political climate to the recent black lives matter protests. We also discussed recent polling of the twenty twenty presidential election, and of course, many many failings of the trump administration. So without further ADO, here's my conversation with Wendy Assefa. Welcome to the broadcast. Thank you for having me. I really wanted to talk to you about this moment in history because I saw a tweet, the other day that really got my attention I think it was from Congresswoman Anna Presley and she said that the civil rights movement didn't in it didn't end and that we're living right now it's ongoing and I think that that's pretty you know accurate what's happening in the streets with black lives matter protests you know what do you think this moment actually means I think this moment right now is a defining moment in our country. And our nation I think that what we have to realize is that without cameras, this has been the backdrop of the lives of black people for years is just so happens that the death of George Floyd was videotaped but this has happened so many times in enough is enough I was told people you know I'm so happy that black lives matter has become a battle cry that people more aware about now in twenty twenty but I remember marching when black lives matters started before was even Hashtag with the death of Trayvon Martin it was the death and killing trayvon Martin that. Ignited the hash black lives matter and so I say all that to say, you know the civil rights movement was a time that we look to as a historic time society and we came through that as a nation but it hasn't ended because just evolved in different ways, and that's what people have to understand and I'm just so excited to see different faces, different races, different backgrounds really fighting now because it's going to take our nation to come together as one in order for us to end systemic racism. Now you're absolutely right it has evolved right? That's the perfect word. For it and when I think about you know what you just said marching when Trayvon Martin was murdered a movement was kind of in its infancy. But what I think is really interesting now is the reaction from conservatives now that people are marching around the world for black lives matter they their reactions were really extreme Ryan, I mean it's like splashed holy water on them like what do you think that they think black lives matter actually means what does it mean to them? You hear people saying like not in my town you're not gonNA bring black lives matter into Maya. Town. Yeah I think is really interesting in the way I. Answer. This question may actually be controversial I think that they are very clear what black lives matter means I think they are very clear but black lives matter stands for, but they don't want to accept what black lives matters means because if they do that means that they are accepting that this country's inherently racist and that's the truth and as uncomfortable truth we are saying black lives matter because black lives are the ones that are under attack were saying black lives matter because the statistics show that black and Brown children in schools are treated differently. That's why we're seeing black. Lives matter but you see it's not just black lives. Matter is black lives matter because black lives have been treated as less than for so many years in this country. So I think that conservatives are fully aware of what this means I think that is willful ignorance for them to say, no black lives with not only to accept that is not the Hashtag that the issue is the premise of the Hashtag doesn't issue and I think that when we're having these conversations with people, these are people who are elected Congress people they're pretty smart. You know they're pretty erudite nature, and so you know these are the same. Individuals who say because they're conservatives that a baby's life matters at the beginning of Jess station. You don't have to come out of the womb for your life to matter but soon as your created your life matters and therefore they're against abortion. So if they're able to understand that a baby's life matters at the beginning of creation than I'm pretty sure that they're competent enough to understand that black lives matter because black lives are the ones under

More cat has the word cabinet. This game was doing so well. Actually it's a it's like a generic category of a lion might be under. It's not i don't think but it could be like wildcat cancelled. "Market realities theory in that model this is all quoted from the article <hes> emily kaplan in that model player compensation would be directly linked to how much revenue each team generates the men's team supports this saying quote the united states national soccer team players association which ironically that is just the men men they say men's in it. The united states national soccer team player association fully supports the efforts of the women's national team players to achieve equal pay specifically. We are committed to the concept of a revenue sharing model to address the u._s. Soccer federation's market reality zimbabwe because u._s. soccer keep saying it's like market realities market realities. They don't make enough money and it's apples to oranges because you're comparing the amount of games that are televised the number of you know whatever so apparently that's one possible option that they have laid out. That's like yeah. I don't know i'm just desperate for specifics felt like the closest thing to a specific. I've seen in a long time <hes> but then again if that were a solution that the u._s. that you're a sucker were interested in. I feel like mediation would've woulda gone smoother so who's to say i guess the courts to say that is to say our gary our gary klausner the atlanta united's manager put his foot in his mouth. Oh see the guys that it was ridiculous. Ridiculous <music> equal pay equal pay is ridiculous if they are watching for the world cup final five hundred million or something like that and one hundred million for a women's final. That's a difference so it's not the same. Thanks dude what if the men in the final or even the tournament also did you get that number from if for example one hundred and one hundred bigger okay what are you talking about and of course they have to be paid what they deserve to earn and not less just what they really deserve. Its if it's just as popular dealers the men they will get it because the income in the adver every time somebody opens her mouth talk about equal pay and they're hot take is like oh. It's not equal though uh-huh yeah. It seems that obvious to you. Don't you think maybe you're missing. Something and you should read into it. Don't you think maybe you should investigate like what arguments people are actually making 'cause the to me that just means that frank de boer has not read or listened to or participated in any educated conversation about what the women are actually fighting for yet feels that he should be able to chime in and go. I'm sorry the the w._n._b._a. Wants to make lebron money like no. They never say that but then everybody that that like doesn't want the women to get paid like that cool prominent guy said it i agree and like it's so disingenuous and disappointing your soccer soccer. Coach read an article about women's soccer one time just be like man. Someone might ask me this question and even if i don't give i should at least i should should get educated on it in. If you don't know anything about it then don't talk just say i don't know much about it. I know they're fighting for it. I'll i'll well actually. I'm going to look that up and i'll get back to you. That's okay to say instead of like. I don't get it. People watch men stuff more. They should get more money like you're. You're a you're a manager like you should know how businesses work and how allocation of resources work and how when a team is ten years old or twenty years older like thirty years old versus a team. That's it's been around for two hundred one hundred years like they're in their infancy. You've to feed babies different than you feed. Adults like that's how this works but people are just out here being like you. You want to be the exact same like we need an investment. There's like marketing if they're on t._v. More you have to watch them more. Why how are you this doll so the next topic we have. I am so wedding. Can you tell me about that. Larry bird <hes> real quick..

"How's it going katie. Thanks for asking how many weeks two weeks in two weeks yep and there's been a controversy v._r. Both weeks the this is the first time for a lot of english fans. Correct me if i'm wrong but this is the thing yeah that's right so for us. It's like well. We've we've been using it in this sport and in this sport and like this. This is the first like exposure to it's here here and so it's it's been interesting for me. I'm gonna let you mostly talk on this but i'll just say from my perspective. It's been interesting to watch. People have the debate about the merits of like instant replay being used in <hes> like officiating like a a debate we had years ago. They're having the first stages of it now and it's really funny funny 'cause like the number one argument. I'm seeing from fans that are against it are like fans. Overseas is that it ruins the spontaneous moment of joy which i remember when we made that argument and like you just kind of forget after a while you can still be spontaneously happy and then you just freak out when you find out it's getting overturned or would after such a silly it's just i don't know it's just really funny. It's like going back in time and looking at the conversations we were having that you don't ever revisit a remember and now we're watching english fans. You like what am i supposed to do. Wait to celebrate a goal until i'm sure it's not going to be reviewed and it's like no you still react the way you react goal happens and then you get to flip over a table also out the window when they turn it so jay. Did you throw your tv out the window this week and they're just sent a sad tweet about soccer. Being canceled canceled is posted an instagram video of myself trying to keep myself from laughing and some of washington and i was wearing this bright orange sweatshirt. I'm sorry go ahead no so just as background basically over the course of the last two weeks. A bunch of calls in english soccer have been unlike looked at microscopically. That's happening for the first time so like there's been offsides calls where people's like offs shoulders offside calls yeah. That's what what i meant. The pitch nil no offside calls were patrol shoulders have been like centimeters off and during a matt sent to me no one with kency see that with their human i but in video you can and so they've called those goals that result of those plays off and removed those goals from <hes> people scoring <hes> another thing that happened this season was that they introduced new handball rule which is that even if there's an inadvertent handball in the box before goal it therefore or is it will be annulled which is new and so that separate from v._r. Sure input so that that is an important point because i think still you haven't said it yet. I can can say if you want. A man city scored. Who's playing tottenham yeah so man said he scored against tottenham at like they'll what minute was it. It was at the end second yeah yeah and it was <hes> it was they were tied one one two two two and so that would have been the go ahead goal <hes> and then in v._r. Revealed that it like bounced off of someone's arm kind of and so they they disallowed it and so i think that the people it was like two different. People people were saying v._r. Sucked but if you really thought about it it was like okay v._r. There are issues with slowing things down and seeing the way you would never be able to see them in real time but there's also it's the combination of v._r. With the changing of this handball rule that really led to this because why would you change the handle rule the same season. You're going to introduce v. a r knowing that like you could slow down to every frame of video and be like technically you can see there that brushed that guy's arm inadvertently at just seems like a you know there are people who argued on either side.

"Here's a thing have you ever watched a baseball game. Every ad in postseason baseball is for like viagra cialis. It's like unknown running a bit that like those are the only companies that advertise during baseball games in the postseason. Cialis commercial followed by viagra commercial. Now probably this season. It'll be what's that one. I keep seeing this like men finally a discreet company that can him yeah that where's hers that they have of a they have baldness erectile dysfunction anything a man's ever been embarrassed to ask for what about like i literally think they have a sister company called hers i do they have the stuff we need pretty sure. Do they have vibrators birth control. Yes pregnancy tests. Yes how about viagra for us. Oh what about traveling doctor about birth control for you expert but it just makes me like male birth control is like a thing that doctors have have said they can easily do this so much more effective and it will but it will destroy their libido just like it does to us but because men are like well. We don't wanna make a pill. That's gonna make dude's not wanna bang so they just won't do it and then they're like hymns a company that makes it easier for you to get a boner and it's like it was already easy. We they have like give a boner pill but not yet <hes>. Let's not go down this road any further but we can keep talking about this. Baseball story turns out that had a sexual enhancement pill market over the counter sex pills or whatever is <hes> estimated to be worth thirty billion dollars a year as an industry the gas assist ones will just <hes> yeah unregulated supplements my god it's a small sector of the unregulated supplement industry and the unregulated supplement industry which by the way how does that exist. How could you have ones that are like well. We don't have to be regulated doesn't feel like regulations. Are oh my goodness in our good but anyway thirty three billion dollars a year. <hes> also not chirp just to in case you're going. When's the last time i heard about one of these weird herbal viagra pills. You may be remembering lamar odom <hes> <hes> when he fell into that coma apparently it was after a significant dose of herbal viagra also going to be on dancing with the stars this season. I guess so oh with lewis and shawn's sir sorry. What a terrible cats honestly. I couldn't think of a word. Is there anyone on that's good <hes> dawson. He had his real name. What is talking about james vanderbeek call dawson she. She can says his name enough for everyone to never have to say his name again everything he's in. He's like hello. It's me james vanderbeek. We know we know we know ooh started before. We move on from this dick story. The league memo says we know from experience. I'm direct quoting we know from experience instead a number of these sexual or male enhancement products which are sold online at retail stores and on the black market also gestation left that out <hes> contain anabolic steroids and other prohibited substances. I know that they that they mean like we know that. Other players have tested positive for but i loved the m._l._b. Wrote a memo. That's like look. Take it from me and i know from from experience. There's stuff in these dick pills. You don't want don't ask it was a friend of mine. Wink wink and then it ends with for this reason quote we strongly only urge players against taking any sexual or male enhancement product from any source so i guess the necessary follow up question is like what's going on with baseball dick's the cups you know do they. All all the time feel like yes does the manager..

"That's right save it in your phone because if we call we're going to call from that at number and it would be nice. If you answer like hello katy instead of like hollow no offense tim you just sounded a little pest and now we're out of the cage so much nice timing j. crush that friendly hello hi look really nice in your orange sweatshirt. We don't have to lay it on thick okay. It's just a it's a we have a cold office. Yes remember a couple of weeks ago. Somebody published that stupid hot. Take no pun intended that air conditioning a sexist because as women get cold in the office and blah blah blah and the whole internet collectively was like no. We're not doing this. I don't care it's freezing cold in this office so i'm always wearing that yeager sweatshirt and you've worn it. I've worn it and so i'm trying to rotate my office sweatshirt. That's smart not really. It's just an unnecessary. It's like ninety degrees out literally and i'm packing a sweatshirt in spending the majority of my day and a sweatshirt and then i leave work and you walk outside and it's like someone just breathing on you so anyway. Thanks for the compliment by most metrics really nights w._n._b._a. Sweatshirt it's pretty sweet. I like it because it's like a lady. Cut yeah anyway enough about my sweatshirt audio medium. How are you i'm okay. You're a little sick this week. <hes> yeah no way and hit by a truck will not literally love like it came out. I don't feel i don't feel i don't feel like throwing up. Yeah it was guys is like you new poll into route of people. I don outside the office. You know when you're so sick that you can't do anything like literally can't move going. Oh i should get some water but you can't even than your leg ver. I could hear my phone buzzing and i was like i can't even pick it up right now. That's usually lia hangover from me. That's when i get so like i hear you stopped making noise <hes> but you feel a little better feel like combining. The different scares me when that thank you and i'm gonna say it on the podcasts boy. "Insane kopech. <hes> are you more of a city person or a country person. And what do you do for a living. I am a high school teacher. Ooh that's why you're not busy right now jay. Did you have any others. I think that we have enough okay. I think we have enough information to go on so i'm going to hang up with you now and we're gonna. We're gonna win. Next time we listened to the podcast. You will have a premier league team. Okay great all right awesome. Thanks tim thank you. We love w love that love. That was fun. Also is fun to know that <hes> that it people don't save our number in their phone because had he you would have said like sports. Okay all right shut out to tim. What what a great orange sweatshirt. No one looks good in orange. Look down like wearing a bright sweatshirt okay so actually re wrote all those down so if you need a reminder but like i was leaning. I'm feeling like a crystal palace. Tell me way <hes> well because you know he said vertical michael stripes. I also think they have one of the better fan bases in the sport like they have very passionate fans. There's also have an eagle that like flies down onto their field at the beginning of matches watches. That's a cool thing <hes> but they are. They're very do our teachers working class. I mean i don't even know how we define it anymore but they're like the working class crystal palace and it just seems like a cool team that hasn't had a ton of recent success so it's not like you look like your glory hunting as they call it right <hes> it's it's not like saying oh you should be a liverpool fan and then everyone will be like of course you are as crystal palce blue red and blue vertical stripes has got it and he said he would wear vertical vertical more often than a horizontal which i find strike shocking. I think he was lying why nobody wears vertical stripes but they're supposed to be slimming. I completely disagree with that. We don't have to get into it. We're focused right now but i think that it actually makes you look worse if you anyway so j what was your first thought yeah. I think that that's a good the city versus country was a good question because it made me start thinking well. It probably should be a london club because i feel like everywhere else in england is the country <hes> you know what i mean. I mean that's obvious turbot now saying yeah. The one that i went to quickly was <hes> was west. Ham also in london also more of a working class club. <hes> and i feel like i went to that because of the notre dame fighting irish and the like west ham hammer felt like similar don't do they. They've got like another weird nickname but it's funny with you know premier league clubs. No one goes by the nickname right. Just doesn't <hes> except i guess spurs <hes> but yet you could go through the mambi like i wouldn't actually know who what their mascot is unless you're the fox's which is pretty sweet and the other thing. That'd be good about west ham's. It feels like they could do something soon like you might be getting in on the ground floor. Yeah they have a cool squad squad the season yeah and so that's another one that's like crystal palace's like they've got passionate. Fans and i don't know if they're gonna do anything anytime soon but it's always a cool fan but kind of like a newcastle soult situation but like west hand it what oh newcastle that just start not gonna stand up but they have. They've got no matter where they go. They have a big falling calling you <hes> but like west ham feels like a you could get in and they actually might be about to do something so those are two good club. We really do have to pick one when he said that he was <hes> chicago teams. That kind of threw me so now. I'm trying to look through that list. I was telling you about before and see if there's.

I'm just saying I'm just saying we're talking about German. That's right. So you always do this. That's the hashtag you picked right up on what the hashtag was. Now. We're going to make this short and sweet because of this concise and complete that was a clip from van Jones interview on the recent Wendy Williams show. Okay. Where she was actually questioning him about wearing a wedding ring while he's going through a very public divorce in break up with his wife, and the pot was calling the kettle the blackest in very conversation. But we don't give sister Wendy some positive. Yes. I said positive we're going to give sister Wendy some positive talk right now. Okay. Because she did something that showed believe it or not from Wendy William's character. You know, what she did she redeemed herself. And it's all about corrective action. I starting with your guy damn self Wendy made the mistake of getting in Vange owns business about his current divorce proceedings. When she is in the middle of a. Coochie sweater of divorce hill. Okay. However. After she made the mistake of making that inference in the his situation, and he triggered chick check their she caught herself. And she checked herself by saying excuse me. Now, there was something that came after. But I cut it off. Because in my mind, I wanted to stop right there by saying excuse me and checking herself so just like sister, Wendy. Okay. William's, which we can continue to stay. 'cause that name ain't gonna change. That's hers. The hunter is her Williams is her her maiden name. Hunter was was her married name. I say was because it's a past tense thing. So yes on it to Wendy Williams. And you know, the gym that we're going to give from her because believe it or not we're going to pull something substantive from Wendy Williams, which she said was excuse me. Excuse yourself this week. When you make a mistake corrected if you're doing things that you know, are not the smartest choices for you to make excuse yourself from all that bad decision making the. "That's what I call. Wendy's. Okay. We are calling the cups. I'm calling Wendy's. Just called. Wow, W O W period. Period. W that sounds more punk. I'll we'll say like you could get away with that a lot of her name. Dammit, Wendy, you put one over me. Then she she your Gordon album called commander of chaos both of those start with the k- that one of them less excited, and I will say that sounds like bad metal. Yeah. I mean when you hear that title, I will say I'm a fan of the Plasmatics, I'm not a fan of the solo ship at all. I mean, it's like the first album was record was produced by Jean Sibbon Simmons, and he played bass on it under a pen name Reginald van Helsing. So yeah, it's bad. Way. But you're saying, geez. It's got his paws on. Good. It'd be bad. I know he's the guy who rocks and rolls all night. He's Ron Jeremy's devil twin right, dude. She was in a bunch of indie movies, she starred in eighty seven. She started a season of a TV show on FOX called the new adventures of beans Baxter, which I should've watched the show before we. Oh, is it? Does it get is it bad? Oh, I didn't even think about it. Oh, no. No. Does it just get worse and worse from here? Does it get sad that doesn't sound like a good show? No. It doesn't get worse and worse from here. Actually. I mean at the end of her life. It's bad. She committed suicide. But like, I I actually. I actually I don't know. I said that because I think it's cool like up to this point. This woman was on Howdy Doody hitchhiked to Colorado went to Florida where she was a lifeguard was a cook and.
