"What I love about. These films is that there are safely engage with my real. Anxiety's diabetes related to this process. My favorite is the movie made in America starring Whoopi Goldberg. She's a single mom after going to a sperm bank and explicitly requesting a black donor but then teenage daughter hacks into the sperm bank computers comes home with news about her donor dad my you're not gonNA believe this but he's a white car salesman. Wait a minute. What do you mean what he's like like white. Y why why why you mean. He's like a creamy show kind of Tan. No like white like totally white like a white guy then there's the movie delivery man where the character David Wozniak played by Vince bond discovers what came of all those years he donated sperm arm. You have sired five hundred thirty three children and one hundred and forty two of them wished to know your identity your the biological father of five five hundred and thirty three children. This is based on something. We've all read about right. Herds of donor conceived siblings. It's a phenomenon that was largely discovered undocumented by Wendy Kramer to use donor sperm to get pregnant in Nineteen eighty-nine elephant. Cry Obeying told us. There were no no more than three kids. They told people more than ten kids basically whoever answers the phone at Burbank gives you a different number even back then when he created a website connect donor conceived people. It's called the sibling donor registry before there is no way to check. This registry started in the year two thousand and right away family started comparing their experiences sperm banks so many of us went into this thinking. It's the medical community so of course Hippos Kipa first do no harm and what many of us started to realize it some point was oh my God. This isn't the medical community these are sperm sellers colors visit California. Kreil Bank doesn't limit the number of offspring. Each donor can help produce but instead the number of families. They can help tomake sometimes with multiple siblings when I interviewed Adrian. She told me that these limits really matter to her. I liked that this bag only allowed ten. Ken Biological Families but on their website California Kreil Bank never says ten families says their limit is twenty five to thirty so as these groups you know came close to ten in an started surpassing ten not just for California Bank but for also Fairfax accents I text the other big ones we all started to realize oh how with the sperm banks have promised all of us isn't the truth. There are a lot of obstacles to limiting. How many kids each donor conceives first of all? Wendy's group found that twenty to forty percent of all pregnancies resulting. I'm from donated. Sperm are never reported back to the sperm banks so there could be more kids out there than ever get counted plus sperm donors. Don't often didn't limit themselves to only one bag. Wendy's group found that as many as twenty eight percent of the donors after their cutoff at one bank. We'll go on to donate at another one. You know I think one guy donated to seventeen renick's and that's how we get movies like deliveryman your sperm as of a very high quality I thank you. I'm sure your sperm is also a high end Scott's office. I was imagining Wendy on one shoulder and Scott on the other the Wendy side telling me spur matters nature in genetics matter the other side Scott side saying just pick any schmuck your maybe will be the best baby lot of parents think think oh it's just a donated sell always just a piece of genetic material to you. It might be just a donated cell or just a piece of genetic material but AH to your child. It's one half of who they are when Hafez their ancestry when half of their medical background when half of their physical attributes it's one half of their mental abilities and too many people that is profound. When you have your child you will never consider the donor you didn't choose. There's no buyer's remorse at the end of this process like getting child. I promise almost nobody has ever come back to me and said No. If I chose one one five six seven daughter is would be a little bit bluer and that might have made for a happier happier childhood good for her and I'd be happier but it doesn't happen. No one's ever disappointed Myers all the time for so many other decisions. I make in my life but your child is going to be perfect All of that is going through. My mind. Scott reads off toners. How about how about this guy green ride scholar has an unquenchable thirst for knowledge who his motto is the world is complex huge and spectacular any wants to experience at all. Do you the motto Mile Okay next when he's not studying. You're typing up a new short story. He enjoys golfing with his dad. Cooking and travelling golfing can't do it all the breaker no joke but kind of isn't he's really into golf. I don't have any friends who are golfers discovers. That's only two of head. That's how you're spending your money. I don't golf and they have to water the Greens and think about the environment. It's reclaimed water then my final. Straw this guy personal essay lists of favorite band a system of down. I gotta go uh-huh listens to heavy metal Romanian. I can't I gotta ago. I want to know everything about these guys but the more I know the easier it is for me to disqualify if I them burning firm shopping the same way I ruined dating thought I don't feel well. "Holds one thing is for certain in an age of scientifically aided conception the definition of family is changing or at least expanding and I wanted to speak to a woman who knows more about that than most Wendy Kramer the founder of the donor sibling registry now it's taught I think to be a part of a donor family you have to be willing to have an expanding view the donor sibling registry was started because I had a curious child my daughter can save son he was curious and you sign up with your donor number and bingo if somebody else signs up with the same donor number you are automatically Max but the tipping point came with DNA testing where now everybody's doing DNA testing there's no more secrets and donor sibling groups they're growing all the time ten years ago a group of ten or twenty would have seemed to large to me now a group of a hundred or more is not uncommon but each sperm bank basically makes their own rules because the food and drug administration in the US they only set guidelines for communicable diseases and there is no cap anywhere about the number of files that can be sold or the number of children that can be born countries like the U. K. where they supposedly banned anonymous donation in two thousand five they are now using mostly U. S. and.

"Live local Seventy-seven WABC. Welcome. There was a piece in the times. I was fascinated with when I came into the station a lot of the women here. We're talking about it. It's by Jacqueline Moreau's contributor to the New York Times and Jacqueline's piece above the learns the identity of her child's grandmother. A sperm Bank threatened to sue. We're living in a time. When many women who do not have a relationship aren't married. Whatever feel their biologic clocks are running out. They decide they want to have a baby. So sperm banks are very common. I remember when it was a rarity people almost never talked about it. Now, it's every day. So what happens when a mother decided to give a DNA test. As a present last holiday last Christmas to a family friends her dad and her five-year-old daughter. This is popular too. I thought about giving this to everyone for the holidays, so Jacqueline. I'm just curious. How did this story come to your attention? Well, I was contacted by the person who runs the donor sibling registry, which is website where people can go on there, and they enter their a sperm donor number, and they actually can find relatives have siblings for their children. And just a couple of people had contacted Wendy Kramer, the person who runs it to say that they got in a very aggressive letters from north West Bank in Washington saying that they were threatening to sue them for twenty thousand dollars per violating their agreement. Yep. To them. Danielle t shirts the one that I spoke to she. She had no idea. She's very upset. And she didn't do it to find out her kids parents identity father or relative was a Christmas present, right. She was just interested in there. Everyone. Exactly. But she was pretty surprised when I came up saying suggested, I think it said is suggested relative grandmother, and she knew right away that that was harassed donors mother. And she just went on a very popular widely advertised twenty three and me, and certainly wasn't looking for anything like that. No, not at all it just came up. And then she started thinking she'd heard a lot of stories about sperm banks that never contact the donor, and she her daughter had an open donor, which meant that when their daughter turned eighteen she could try and contact which is unusual. Well, actually starting to head that way because so many people want that now, but can you imagine? And I'm sure Jacqueline since you're involved in this. There are stories of young interns and residents and med schools. To get money donate. They could have twenty seven kids. Right. Well, I actually did a story about a sperm donor who has a hundred fifty. You're kidding. And I just. That group and she says the numbers up to two hundred my Lord, can you can you believe such a thing? Crazy. It's crazy. Well, I'm sure out of one hundred or two hundred he can find someone to take care of him and his all day. That's really funny. So here's your following this woman, Danielle Tucher, and as a result of her Christmas present she finds out that her daughter has a grandmother a living grandmother. So what she decides which I would do to to reach out. Right. So she decides. Since about it for a little while. And then she says, you know, this could be my only chance maybe a could write her a letter or write something special because now she has to wait til she's eighteen. And maybe even then nothing will happen, especially rich. Very nice Email. She finds modern Email and says, I really don't wanna intrude on your privacy. I just want to let you know, we'd be open to have communication, and if your son would be interested in reaching out to my daughter, and she and she thought like when I first read it. This is great. The grandma will be thrilled. Exactly the wrong thing. Exactly, so bad. And I guess the mother told the sun. The mother may not have known about. Of course, how many sons are going to tell their mother needed a few bucks. I went to the sperm Bank. Exactly. And I I suppose there's the sperm donor contacted the sperm Bank, very angry. And that's when the letter was fired off to ten. On the twenty thousand dollars. How did that get resolved? By the way, that is not resolved yet. It is not resolved. So the other thing is that they kept Mexico. They had four vials. His firm that she had been storing there in case she wanted to have. You know, people tend to want to have a full sibling, right, and she had an had this. So she could if she did it again, and they decide and they told her that they were keeping those were not getting back to her. But I bet legally she could get those. They said the inventor of the money, right? But I'd lawyers whom you've talked to what do you think her legality is in this case? That is unclear. I mean, what's interesting is Hannah a tennis Burbank, how a child who was even part of the agreement that they can't take a DNA test. Identity of their sperm donor. Well, that was the part that was so interesting, although the parents may be liable or may be held to an agreement. It's very hard kid was born at the time to hold a child to that. Right. Exactly. That'll be the legal question here. And I'm sure it'll be many more cases like that more people take DNA tests and more information is out there. It doesn't even have to be sperm donor DNA in their stomach could just be a relative, and it's very easy to track that person down that way. But it certainly is a kettle of worms, right? Because most of these people who donate on many of them definitely donate more than once. And can you imagine thousands of children coming forth to claim they're all find out there? Biologic family history. That's right. That's why many people think that there should be some kind of regulation of the fertility. Industry, and there is no regulation of it in this country other countries like England, they're very heavily regulated there for donors are only allowed to donate ten family. But in this country. Jerod hundred offspring there's some guidelines that but that's it. By them. You know? But of course, you can understand just like kids who have been adopted often wanna go find their biologic parents how do you keep an offspring for trying to find a genetic link to it's it's very similar to adoption and in effect adoption records have become much more open now, especially in New Jersey where I live. I think they've all opened up, but that's not been the case with sperm donors and a lot of children of sperm donors are now coming of age and they're trying they want their own right. When it comes to finding out the the medical history. That's so important. We can all understand that. Right. Right. But they still are no real answers. Would that be accurate Jacqueline as to what? As to what's going to happen. I mean, you right now a lot of sperm banks make you sign something. But no one really knows because it hasn't been tested that much right? I it was interesting that now north of oh Bank has a big one. Glenn has only tax ID disclosure donors, which means that when the child turns eighteen they are entitled to know that donors identity. So it is moving that way. They're not accepting anonymous donors anymore, right? And you wonder if someone like this family wanted to protect its identity how the man involve would've even signed off on something like this because what's going to prevent his offspring from trying to find him. Yeah. As one of the lawyers, I talked to said donor anonymity has gone away. Because that tape there donor anonymity in country. And in fact, I'm working on a follow up story to that one. Which is looking at how people are. Drew DNA tests are learning that they are actually given the wrong sperm from from the sperm that they require. You mean they picked a sperm reading on. We don't even know. My question is always been when you read the bios of the donors could be like a fairytale. You know, right. They're all brilliant. They're all medical students. They're all L. Tall Jalazon hair blue. I exactly right. So you know, how much truth it's like these dating websites, right? When you see them in person at ain't the same as their profile online. But even scarier than that is that we're finding out that they didn't get not only do they not get the Donut that they ask for. But the one that they got had history of cancer in the family, Alzheimer's. Kinds of unpleasant things. Yeah. But there's so much work to be done. There must be a whole lot practice now. Well, interesting I look forward to your follow up shackling morose who writes for the New York Times read this piece because it's very much important to our time. And with DNA a mother learns, the identity of her child's grandmother. A sperm Bank threatens to sue. So the mother now has to deal with lawyers and everything else from an innocent query. That's right. And she's a single mom. She works as a nanny. So she's having a hard time. And what do you tell your kids? You know, daddy whose daddy. Right. Well, a lot of families couples and mothers now try and tell their kids a permanent early age where they came from. So that it's not a shock. And so that's been a lot better for the children in terms of figuring out who their identity is that sort of thing. Okay. Well, we look forward to the next article. Thanks, really interesting so much we'll talk again, Jacqueline Miro center in a fascinating story. I'm Joan Hamburg. You're listening to WABC DKNY.

Bobby remember the other day when we were talking about how these DNA tests kits Twenty-three me ancestry and all have found yet another way to complicate people's lives with sperm donors. That's right Angela's on the line, right? Now at eight B O B S H E R. I with a very interesting story. Hey angela. Thanks for calling the show. Hi, Edger of tell us. Tell us all about good. What's going on? Yeah. So I was an egg donor, and my daughter was born from a donor sperm and between my eggs and heard donors. We actually have twenty. She's got twenty four siblings, and the really cool part about it is for her donor. We went on donor sibling registry years ago and found some first blames so they all kind of get together. And and they know each other and their friends and we call them the sisters. So it's it's really been a great experience, actually because it's giving her, you know, some of the the history, and the she's just she feels very bonded to them. It's really been. I think. Awesome. This is wild. So how does the sisters? I mean are there. So many similarities like can you tell like, oh my gosh. These girls are sisters. They look like they're cloned from each other. I actually sent pod a picture there. They all very very similar. They're all super smart incredibly talented there. There's a ton of similarities it's crazy there were twenty three of them. So the on the donor sibling side on the sperm donor side. There's sports team that we know of. Wow. And all ranged from there in new London, New Hampshire. Connecticut, California all over. Now. Do does the donor himself is he part of this like does he know that that he has all of these children that they're all connected to each other? I honestly don't know. I think that one of the moms might have reached out to him. But as an egg-donor, I was actually a known donor. So I know we're all of my donor babies were, but for a lot of guys, you know, they did this in in college to pay for medical school. I want to respect their privacy. So I I don't know. The is are all the siblings that your daughter's found did you say, they're all girls all three there's fourteen and three of them are boys is interesting something right there is there some sort of a program where there's a heads up when the you have that many babies that are born from the same donor to make sure that nobody. Each other dates each other. How does that? How does that work? They're supposed to be the donor sibling registry. Actually was started by Wendy Kramer. And she was on Oprah several years ago. And so you go online, and you register with your donors ideas. And that's how you find other people with the same donor ID. So it's not regulated as far as I know. But somebody from the clinic did reach out at some point in ask some of us if we had any more vials. So I think that they were kind of nervous that there were getting to be a little bit too many. And from what I understand they did take his firm off the off the list test market. So you're an egg donor, and did you how did that work? Did you donate your eggs like all through one agency your practice? How does what's that world? No. I was actually a known donor. So you can go into these Tilleke clinics. And being anonymous donor I wanted more involvement. Just in case when the kids were grown they wanted some history. And so all of my donations were known, so. I did them privately. I knew all of the mothers, and I was very involved, and I'm basement friends with a lot of them still, and we kind of keep in touch, and that way I'm available of down the road any of the children want to know anything also for medical history. So you know, if something were to happen. I can keep them informed. Nice person. That's fantastic. Such as thick as a guy. If I found out there were what fourteen of they would find you. Would find me for tuition, at least we could never let you donate. Know, I can't concentrate I'm going to need to go private high. Are you chitchat you pay forever? Exactly. So next question. Angela your daughter growing up, I'm assuming you told her it sounds like from the very beginning that heard where her what her origins were told her based on her age. You know, what information she could process? She actually just found out about the sisters last summer. Did she ever want to find the man that would be her biological father? No, no. I think maybe that could change down the road. But I think having the sisters has helped kind of make her feel connected and kind of giving her a little bit of heritage without feeling like she needs to get more information and not the change. I mean, she's thirteen. So, you know. Did you say that your daughter has met the sisters? She is she is actually Facebook friends are Instagram friends. They are going to meet in person this year. This is the first year that she's gonna go because she's just now is old enough to where I was really comfortable with it. So where are they going to meet as been decided? Last year. It was New York. So within being everywhere, I think that the talked about doing an RV in California. Great Netflix documentary ab- sorry. This is a movie, and they all go RV ING, and they pull into a gas station. And there's the donor somehow they figure. So I know we don't have any more time. But I was just curious since you're known donor. If you've had a chance to see some of the children born from your donor eggs, and you see those similarities to in some of them. So one of the one of the kids, my mom actually picture of hot our fridge when she was two, and she was like, I don't remember this picture being taken of you. And I said mom, that's not even. Angela hang on someone to talk to more. We can okay. The new Bob and Sheri at instantly, get the podcast and odd cast if you're just joining us, we have Angela on the line at eight B O B S H E R I. Angela is an egg donor and her thirteen year old daughter was conceived with donor sperm, but has found through the donor sperm sibling. The donor sibling registry has found thirteen sisters or fourteen sisters Angela eleven. Three brothers brothers. And so the brothers. So I was asking since Willem let me just said that the brothers don't show up for the get togethers. Some of the parents have not disclosed to the children. So the boys. I don't think no yet. All right. So my question was as a as a known egg donor. You have a chance to know some of the children that were conceived with your donor eggs to you see genetic similarities to yourself or to other family members. And some of them like like, I was saying I don't know if it was for the break. So my one of them had a picture up on my fridge when she was two, and my mom came in and said, I don't remember that picture being taken mom, that's not me. And she was just absolutely shocked to it. It looks just like me some of the others like I really question whether or not they actually used the right X because there's new similarities, so it's interesting medics and how that works. What I was thinking about during the break like that movie. Three identical strangers. It's it's on television. Now, you can probably watch it on demand. It was on CNN just a few nights ago. And I've seen it now three times because one of the things that that jumps out at you. And it's a an incredible movie and funny and heartbreaking. But one of the things that jumps out at you is how powerful genetics are like we always want to think that we can shape our kids and mold their behavior, whatever, but girls in networks really dominate is so true that is so very no, I couldn't do this to have to meet all of these kids and apologize. They would look at me, and they'd all say no trunk and I'm allergic to admit, I'm allergic to dust that everything else. The pressure greet jeans. Did you say fall short? You didn't apologize. Yeah. That's right. So here's so here's a thought your your daughter going forward. Do you think that she will? Or is it impossible to even guess if she'll maintain lifelong relationships absolutely other kids, he do. Yeah. She's these girls, they're all katie's the baby. So she's the youngest out of all of them. So they're all most of them are sixteen seventeen eighteen and she's thirteen so they kind of really taken her under their wings. So it's it's it's been really great for her. I would love to open up my Email one day and find that I had a sister or thirteen sisters. I think that's incredible. And they're all they're all just wonderful kids. I mean, there's super talented one of them's actually gonna be auditioning for I guess the version of London's got talent. They're they're just so wonderful. So I'm so glad that that she found them. All one of the interesting things Angeles SEB was the sperm donor was a med school student like so many of them really break guy. Manjula? Thank you so much for calling loud. Do they have a right to track them down or their family, the family of their father down or is the anonymous donors right to remain just that anonymous does that supersede. The interesting thing is that the specialists said that doctor said that the problem is you've got science has sped up so quickly that it is now ahead of the legal system. So let's dive into this, shall we? Who's right is right. Who's right supersedes that of the other four one four seven nine nine one six twenty and the academic mortgage, talk and text line is it even a right at all.
